MEXICAN MINUTE FISHING REPORT for WEEK of FEB. 11-18, 2018
THE BIG PICTURE FISHING REPORT
Captain Adolfo of our Tailhunter Fleet at Las Arenas took Dr. Guy Nazareno from Fremont CA out and plugged the box with some nice fat yellowfin tuna. This was Guy’s first visit to fish with us in La Paz.
Our good amiga, Verda Boyd, with her favorite Captain Jorge comes to see us once or twice a year and she started her week off with some sturdy yellowfin and a legit dorado from Muertos Bay.
Two more yellowfin tuna for Alex Dominguez using live bait at the south end of Cerralvo Island.
Our own popular head of Tailhunter’s transportation, Jorge Romero poses with another of our great amigos, Tim Zimmer, and another yellowfin tuna.
TUNA AGAIN SET THE SURPRISING BAR
La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay/ Suenos Bay Fishing Report for Week of Feb. 11-18, 2018
Again, we had some atypical fishing for winter in La Paz. As usual, there were some days when the winds were blustering and the currents were strong so we ended up fishing around the rocks and reefs of Bahia de los Muertos to keep in the protected waters. Fishing produced jack crevalle, sierra, bonito, snapper, cabrilla and cargo. Or, towards the end of the week when winds pretty much completely hindered any effective fishing.
However, once again, we were surprised by the showing of yellowfin tuna which we don’t usually see so early in the year, especially during the winter months. Using live sardines or frozen squid, fish were running healthy 15-40 pounds. Fishing was best when the winds and current were diminished which allowed us to get to the live bait spots and then make the short run to the south end of Cerralvo Island.
Earlier in the week when waters were calmer, we were getting 1-6 tuna per panga. Later in the week as waters got a little more choppy, fewer but larger fish moved in with schools of bonito limiting the tuna bite although the few fish we got were generally larger than the earlier fish. The same area also produced a few dorado as well.
THIS WEEK’S WHALE WATCHING GALLERY
Our whale watching season is in full-swing right now and we’re running daily and overnight trips to the whales. Check out some of the photos and video from this week!
Popping up to visit! A grey whale spy hops between two pangas!
Well, hello, Mama!! Come to play!
Ready to go!
Turn up the sound. Some funny stuff to listen to!

MAGDALENA BAY EXPLORATORY TRIP ROCKS!
Saul Ochoa poses with Verda Boyd who was on fire in the shallow backwaters of Bahia Magdalena hooking another tasty snook!
The variety of fish was outstanding on the light tackle including pargo mulatto, dog tooth snapper, red snapaper, snook, corbina, black snapper and snook.
Happy guy, Jorge Romero, with a nice white corvina he said tasted great with salsa vera cruz back in La Paz!
Snook and corbina on the deck were some of the surprising catches!
For the first time, we sent out some exploratory trips to check out the inshore fishing at Bahia Magdalena about 3 hours from La Paz in the hundreds of square miles of calm shallow lagoon waters. We are ecstatic about what we encountered using live bait and light tackle. Fishing in the brush and mangroves of the brackish water, they encountered numerous species including snook, dog-tooth snapper, yellow snapper, big white corvina, black snapper, cabrilla and many others! We plan to send out a few more exploratory trips and may start running panga fishing there before the season is over.
ADIOS LA PAZ CARNAVALE 2018!
For almost a week, La Paz rocked with the sounds of the biggest street fair of the year as the entire waterfront Malecon of the city held it’s traditional Carnavale with rides, parades, food, incredible music and all kinds of crazy fun. Thanks to everyone who filled our Tailhunter Restaurant which is right on the waterfront to spend their Carnavale hours watching all the parades! Viva La Paz!
Great aireal view of the waterfront! Tailhunter is at the very top of the photo somewhere in the lights and revelry of the 6-day event!

THE BIG PICTURE FISHING REPORT from TAILHUNTER SPORTFISHING
Rick Kasper from Wyoming has a big grin with his tuna and dorado and says they also caught cabrilla, dozens of bonito and lost a bigger dorado!
Captain Armando got the guys onto the tuna spot returning with a nice batch of YFTs!
Steve Reich from San Diego with a nice day of tuna
Dr. Doug Finn from New York likes spending a few weeks every winter in La Paz and getting in some fishing. He shows off one of his yellowfin tuna on the beach at Muertos Bay.
WINTER TUNA BITE? SERIOUSLY?
La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay/ Suenos Bay Fishing Report for Week of Feb. 4-11, 2018
Our fishing report this week is almost identical to last week. Not many folks fishing this time of year. Typical windy days and then great sunny days and the key is really figuring out which days will be windy or not. On the days it’s windy there’s two choices. Either stay ashore and figure a different day to fish or go out and fish inshore where we’re catching the usual structure fish like pargo, cabrilla or snapper. Just a little outside, bonito, sierra and jack crevalle add to the catch. Maybe the occasional dorado.
However, on the calmer days when we can move off just a bit further, especially over to Cerralvo Island, there’s yellowtail, big dog tooth snapper and the SURPRISE!!!! ….some decent 15-30 pound yellowfin tuna. Slow trolling deep running Rapalas, live sardines and chunked frozen squid have been working best.
Normally, we don’t see these tuna out here this time of year. The tuna are usually a spring / fall fish for us, but this is a real nice bonus. There’s a spot of tuna off the south end of Cerralvo Island holding the fish but it’s all dependent on being able to make that quick run over if the wind and waves allow. Fortunately, this past week there were some good days to make the run because if it’s blowing, it’s also hard to get the bait!
This would be nice if it holds out. I’m not sure if these are left-over fish from last season or we’re onto the beginning of a super new season! Will keep you posted for sure! Pretty cool stuff!
THANKS PORTLAND! GRACIAS SALT LAKE CITY!
Our 2018 Tailhunter Road Tour has Jilly and I splitting up and headed in different directions this past week. Jilly covered the super Great Western Hunting and Conservation Show in Salt Lake City, UT. I held the fort in our booth at the Pacific Northwest Sportsmans Show in Portland, Oregon!
Wow…what killer fun shows! Thank you everyone who came to visit! When we’re alone it sometimes makes it hard to chat as much as we’d like to, but we sure appreciated seeing you and big thanks also to all of you who booked trips with us this year! We’re looking forward to the visit. We’ll have some fun!
Next, we split up again . I’ll be in Bakersfield and Jilly head to Boise Idaho. Come visit and we hope to see you there!

THE BIG PICTURE FISHING REPORT
Nice plug yellowfin tuna for Dave Distel of Arizona. Pretty unusual to get a bonus fish like this in the winter!
Dave Distel again with one of the firecracker yellowtail that’s come up close to shore. That’s Captain Victor grinning in the background.
Happy Birthday to Mike Distel of Huntington Beach CA celebrating at our Tailhunter Restaurant with fresh cooked fish that he and his son caught!
WINDS HAMPER FISHING
La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay/ Suenos Bay Fishing Report for Week of Jan. 21-28, 2018
Still not too many folks fishing. It’s been pretty windy from the north as is pretty typical for this time of year and it’s the January slump when there’s just not that many folks in town either! It’s actually a nice time to be in La Paz. It’s sunny and relatively warm for the snow birds with day time temps in the high 70’s compared to where they’re escaping from. It’s just not necessarily the best time to be in the water.
However, we did get some folks out for a few days for some scratchy mixed bag fishing. Again ,the winds weren’t exactly our friends. However… Inshore, there’s snapper, bonito, pargo, seabass and good schools of jack crevalle. There should be more sierra around, but it hasn’t been consistent. One day, they swarm and the next day, they can’t be found.
The more quality fishing has been some firecracker 10 pound yellowtail around and also some surprising 20-pound class tuna in Muertos Bay. Maybe still hanging out from last fall! One of our captains saw some free swimming wahoo as well, but they moved off.

Thanks for all the hospitality, Washington…and the rain too! It just would’t be Washington without the rain! We love it! We live in a desert in Baja so it’s nice to see so much green!
Jilly and I will be splitting up now…
In two weeks, I will man the booth at the Northwest Sportsmans Show in Portland, Oregon at the Expo Center right next to the Columbia River. Jill will fly out to the huge Western Hunt Expo at the Salt Palace in Salt Lake City! I’ll post up more details next week. We’re looking forward to seeing all our amigos!

Captain Adolfo with amigos showing off some yellowtail, a pargo and cabrilla.
JANUARY VARIETY
La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay / Suenos Bay Fishing Report for Week of January 14-21, 2018
Still not too many folks fishing right now, but even with the breezy weather, there’s been some great variety of fish. All of our fishing is being done right now out’ve Bahia de los Muertos where it’s more protected and the fishing is closer to shore. Waters seemed to get a little cooler and that reflected in the type of species that showed up this past week.
A lot more sierra than we’ve seen in a while with some nice-sized fish up to about 5 pounds eating over the drop-offs and reefs. Additionally, some good sized pargo, cabrilla and snapper were taken but in those same areas, there’s some smaller-school-sized firecracker yellowtail running about 10 pounds. Over more open water, but still close to shore, there’s schools of bonito and jacks plus some free-swimming dorado still around all making for some great mixed boxes of fish.
GREY WHALES HAVE ARRIVED!
The annual visit from the Gray Whales has started and the whales are arriving daily at Bahia Magdalena where they’ll hang out in the warm calm waters until about March. Great family trip of a lifetime. We’re running daily tours! Contact us and we’ll set up the whole package!
THANKS SACRAMENTO – HERE WE COME WASHINGTON!
Wow…what a show we just had at the California State Fairgrounds for the International Sportsman Expo! Just incredible and great to see so many good friends, amigos and Tailhunter tribe members! Bookings were off-the-hook! Glad so many of you are coming to see us this year in La Paz! We’re gonna have fun. Thanks so much!
And now we’re on the road and rumbling up the road and headed north! We need to be in Washington by Tuesday to set up for the Washington Sportsmans Show that kicks off Wednesday to Sunday at the Puyallup State Fairgrounds just south of Seattle! We love the Pacific Northwest and this is always a great show! Here’s further details! Click the link:
Our Captain Adolfo was out just outside of Muertos. Dropped a mackerel and caught the nice little yellowtail. So, he then put down a Rapala and immediately got whacked by the wahoo right up close to the rocks!
Bonus for Paul Melewski from Colorado staying in Muertos Bay at Rancho Costa. Goes out for snapper over the rocks and pops a pair of dorado…in January!
THE LULL AFTER the HOLIDAYS
La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay / Suenos Bay Fishing Report for Week of Jan. 7-14, 2018
Not many folks fishing this week which is pretty typical now that the holidays are over. Most of the holiday visitors have left and town is pretty mellow again, not that it was ever very bustling. But, by the same token, not many folks fishing either. Too bad because it was actually a pretty decent week for weather and the few trips we had out all resulted in some surprising fish.
There were the usual jacks and snapper, but also in those same spots close to shore and over the rocks we got yellowtail and wahoo. In the bay, there’s still some dorado cruising around too.
THANKS DENVER – ONWARD TO SACRAMENTO
Thanks to everyone who came to visit us in Denver. The ISE show at the Denver Convention Center was massive. Great turnout and great to have so many of you booking to come visit us in La Paz this year. Apologies if I personally missed you as I was out 2 1/2 days from the booth with a fever, no voice and an upper respiratory infection! But, Jill did a stellar job, as she always does and I’m mo’ bettah now! Thanks for understanding!
So, we’re on the road now with our van loaded and driving through the snow to get form Colorado to California to set up at the ISE show at the California Fairgrounds in Sacramento. This is the largest hunting/ fishing show in N. California and a huge event for the whole family. Come see us. We’ll have the booth in the usual spot. Show runs Thursday to Sunday. Here’s more details. Click this link:
MEXICAN MINUTE VIDEO REPORT for WEEK of Jan. 1-7, 2018
Regretfully, no video report this week. Have picked up a cold up here in the states with this colder weather that I wasn’t ready for and LOST MY VOICE! I have to save it for the 4 days of showtime this week at the International Sportsmans Expo in Denver at the Convention Center. Hopefully, it comes back!
The Big PICTURE FISHING REPORT
It’s not summer warm, but it’s definitely warmer than Chuwelah, Washington where Mark Burlington is from posing here with a nice dorado unusual for this time of year but no complaints. – Mark was staying at Rancho Costa there in Muertos Bay where we’re doing all our fishing this tie of the season.
Normally, we don’t see dorado until about April or May and even that’s a bit early, but either these are holdovers from last year or new fish have moved into area. One of the reasons is in the video clip below. Check our the sardine schools in Bahia Muertos!
Thanks to Gary Wagner for this video clip showing a big reason so many species might be in the bay right now is the presence of schools of sardines. A great sign for the season! Food!!!!
Schools of big jack crevalle have moved in and are incredible fighters especially on light tackle although not such great eating. Dean Schilling all the way from Wisconsin enjoying some warm Baja weather and some time fishing. He’s staying there in the Bay at Rancho Costa.
Miles Wagner from Colorado Springs CO with his dad, Gary, was throwing top water plugs when this bull mahi jumped the lure. Well, it then proceeded to jump right into the boat too! Miles also caught jacks, tuna and cabrilla this week.
Keegan and Paul Miewski also there in Bahia Muertos rocked some good eating bottom species with a couple of hefty barred pargo mulatto!
The head man himself, jefe of Rancho Costa, Gary Wagner did some later afternoon fishing and caught another early season visitor. Amberjack are the larger cousins to yellowtail and we don’t usually see them until May or so! Great eating and they get over 100 pounds although this size is the best eating!
Here’s something you don’t see every day. Gary Wagner who owns the Giggling Marlin Bar in Cabo and the Rancho Costa Resort in Muertos Bay was walking the beach and a commercial guy was cleaning a strange fish! He said he was about 600 feet out in the bay and caught this…HALIBUT??? First time I’ve seen one in these waters in over 30 years! Just so you know it’s not fake, you can see Rancho Costa in the background. If it looks like a duck…walks like a duck…sounds like a duck…??? HALIBUT?
Maybe salmon will show up next? The Mexican name for halibut is “Lenguado” (tongue fish). This is on the beach at Bahia Muertos and that’s Rancho Costa Resort in the background. No photoshop!!!
GOOD START FOR THE YEAR WITH SURPRISE SPECIES!
La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay/ Suenos Bay Fishing Report for Week of January 1-7, 2018
Happy New Year Everyone! Hope the year is off to a good start!
Not a bad week of fishing. Nothing spectacular, but a nice variety of species including some genuine surprises. Not many folks fishing but everyone out did catch some fish. Still some pesky winds but mostly nice enough to fish with all of our fishing taking place out of Muertos Bay/ Las Arenas Areas where we can fish closer to shore and it’s more protected.
In addition to species we normally catch like barred pargo, yellow snapper and cabrilla, there were also some nice schools of jack crevalle to bend the rods and put on great fights although not such good eating. Still lots of fun. In addition, there were also bonito and a smattering of surprising yellowfin tuna and dorado around the bay as well.
Tuna, dorado and amberjack are a real bonus this time of year. Normally, we don’t see these species until spring when the waters are warmer. If you check out this week’s photos, you’ll also see a…halibut??? Yup . It sure looks like it! It’s crazy.
Alot could be due to the fact that there’s still sardine schools in the bay drawing the fish to the food source. That’s all a great sign and hope the bait stays around. Last season the return of the bait marked an incredible fishing year!
The coming week looks OK for the weather although strong winds mid-week.
Big shout out to Gary Wagner owner of Rancho Costa Resort in Bahia Muertos where we’re doing all of our fishing right now for all the photos he sent. If you’re interested in staying at his great place, give us a shout at: Jonathan@tailhunter.com.
WHALES ON THE WAY!
The migrating gray whales should be showing up any week now to spend the next several months with us after 3500 miles of swimming from the Bering Sea. They’ll be at Bahia Magdalena until about March and February is a great time to lock in your trip with us to have an incredible experience close up to these great animals. It’s really popular and many dates are filled or nearing capacity so don’t wait. Contact us at: Jonathan@tailhunter.com and we’ll set you up!
SEE YOU IN DENVER!

MEXICAN MINUTE VIDEO VERSION FISHING REPORT
THE BIG PICTURE FISHING REPORT
Surprising to still be getting dorado this late in the year, but there’s still some fun-sized fish hanging out close to shore in the bay.
Some good eating! Cabrilla are becoming more prominent now that we’re doing more inshore fishing along the rocks and reefs. These Mexican “seabass” can get pretty large and are all tough fighters to get out’ve the rocks!
Nice rack of fish this week from Muertos Bay! Dorado and cabrilla!
One of the nicer flat days this past week at Bahia de los Muertos produced this nice bull dorado!
Looks like the last fishing report of the year, everyone!!! Hope the holidays have been good to you!
The weather gods were surel good to us this week.
Wind wasn’t too bad of an issue and some great sunny skies for the snowbirds that are in town for the holidays. Biggest “problem” if you can call it that, is that most folks in town aren’t here to fish! But that’s OK too! It’s a nice time to just be in town to enjoy some warm sunshine, beaches and getaway from the cold places people come from!
For those folks who did get out fishing, there was decent action. Not great but still some fish to be caught. It’s winter and off-season. So, it’s nice to even be able to be out there!
I often have to keep in mind that the folks who fish this time of year, aren’t necessarily “fisherfolk” who have a lot of experience and are just looking for a nice day on the water. So, we don’t want get too technical with them and want to make sure they have a nice time and still catch some fish.
So, most of the fishing is closer to shore in the protected areas where we can get into some snapper, sierra, pargo, and cabrilla (seabass) as well as trigger fish. That way everyone has a good time and gets to pull on some fish and have some fish to take home. However, the bonus even in these areas, close to shore is that we have some dorado still in the area (decent 10-15 pounders). There have also been reports of some yellowtail around too, but all broken off or could have easily been something else big that took the anglers into the rocks and busted off! Still encouraging! But, at least there’s still some action to be had.
The coming week doesn’t look too badly. There’s some winds in the forecast, but should be fishable!
TAKING WHALE WATCHING RESERVATIONS! WHALES ON THE WAY!
Our whale watching season at Magdalena Bay is coming up! The big guys show up from January to March with February being prime time. Our reservations are filling up for day and overnight trips (you stay at a hotel on land!). We can set up whole packages including the tours, transportation, meals, and other activities! Let us know. Don’t miss out on an incredible experience. Just write to me directly at Jonathan@tailhunter.com and we’ll get you all set up!
TAILHUNTER ROAD TOUR 2018 COMING YOUR WAY!
We’re on our way! The van is packed with our booth…a zillion brochures…a zillion t-shirts…We’re hitting the road and our first stop will be the fun city of Denver, Colorado. We’ll be at the International Sportsmans Expo from Thursday to Sunday (January 11-14th). Come by. Say hi and let’s chat about fishing in La Paz this year. We had a phenomenal year…one of the best in recent history and it looks like 2018 is shaping up for another action-packed year!
If you’re in the Denver area, this is an event for the whole family! There’s over 600 vendors from around the world from Africa to the Arctic and from South America to New Zealand, not to mention Mexico and all over the U.S. from Alaska to Maine with hunting, fishing, camping, boating and more! Lots of activities and great food too.
MEXICAN MINUTE VIDEO REPORT for WEEK of Dec. 3-10, 2017
WEEK AT A GLANCE
Weather – Sunny, but incredibly windy almost all week with rough water. Diminishing somewhat this week, but winds will still blow.
Water – Have to pick and chose your spots carefully. Waters can get rough.
Fishing – When you can get out, still blue water species hovering.
One one of the rare days that the wind wasn’t blowing, our amigo, Roger Thompson, got out and worked that north side of Cerralvo Island near La Reina and dragging a Rapala X-rap 30 deep hooked this hog wahoo that even he had trouble holding up for the photo! Still wahoo and tuna around just tough to get out this past week!
One man’s junk is another man’s treasure! With all the wind, the “calm” channel between Las Arenas/ La Ventana and Cerralvo Island is kicking up perfectly for the windsurfers that descend this time of year to catch wind!
WIND AND WAVES MAKE FISHING TOUGH
La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay/ Suenos Bay Fishing Report for Week of Dec. 3-10, 2017
Not much to say this week. A good week for snowbirds to enjoy some beach time or shopping or hanging out in a restaurant watching the ocean because it definitely wasn’t the greatest week to be on the water. The strong devastating winds that plagued firefighters in Southern California with Santa Ana ferocity also blows down the Baja Peninsula and Sea of Cortez as well. Borders don’t stop winds! Maybe not as strong, but enough to kick up waves and chop and big swells, even in the normal calm waters inside La Paz Bay.
So, the window of opportunity for any fishing this week was limited to either hearty (crazy) souls who probably got beat up out there or earlier in the week. There’s still fish out there. Not much fishing north of town because the winds are from the north so almost all the fishing is out’ve Muertos Bay / Las Arenas/ Punta Perrico and Cerralvo Island where there’s some limited protection.
Some yellowfin tuna are still hanging out, but live bait is hard to come by. Dorado are still in the area up to about 15 pounds and we also had some wahoo chase the Rapalas closer to the island. Some of the wahoo ran 20-40 pounds or larger. Wind should be diminishing a bit this week. And town should start getting a bit more crowded as folks come in for the holidays.
ALMOST TIME FOR THE WHALES TO SHOW UP – BOOKING NOW and FILLING FAST
The whales should start showing up in about a month. Best times are January to early March with mid – February an ideal time to get close to these magnificent animals in the calm waters of Magdalena Bay. It’s a fantastic family experience. We can book the whole package for you as a day trip or overnight adventure including lodging, food, transportation and guided trips to the whales from La Paz. Just e-mail us at: Jonathan@tailhunter.com .
CHRISTMAS IDEAS!
Just saying…if you’re still stumped about a unique Christmas gift, how about a vacation trip to La Paz this year? You don’t have to know the dates right now. We’ll figure it out later! But what a great surprise to give a customized trip to the angler on your list or…every year we have fishermen giving a trip “to their wives and girlfriends.” (No, it’s NOT like giving them a vacuum cleaner!). And there’s plenty of things to do besides fishing in Baja! Just tell us what you want to do and how long you want to stay. Lots of options on activities and hotels!

MEXICAN MINUTE LA PAZ VIDEO FISHING REPORT for WEEK of Nov. 26-Dec. 3, 2017
WEEK AT A GLANCE
Weather – Nice beach weather. Sunny and warm, but breezy. No humidity. Perfect get-away if it’s raining or snowing back home where you’re from!
Water – Getting cooler and rougher. Some days very windy.
Fishing – Surprising that we still have bluewater species like dorado and tuna around!
THE BIG PICTURE FISHING REPORT
Miles Wagner from Colorado Springs CO staying at his dad’s place in Muertos Bay at the Rancho Costa Hotel, put this big-headed bull dorado into the boat just outside Muertos!
Kevin Shiotani from Thousand Oaks CA makes several trips a year to fish in La Paz and always does well. He poses with three nice dorado on the beach at Bahia de los Muertos.
Todd Stumpy and friends found some tuna and dorado fishing with us on a calm day in Muertos. Surprising to find tuna and dorado still around!
Headed for the grill, Captain Jorge stuck this dorado!
Lots of bookings coming in for our upcoming whalewatching season that starts in January and goes through March. Get in touch with us and we’ll set up a whole package for you and the family! Contact us soon. Makes a great Christmas present!
LULL BETWEEN HOLIDAYS STILL HOLDS LATE FISH
La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay / Suenos Bay Fishing Report for Week of Nov. 25-Dec. 3, 2017
Not many fisher-folk in town right now. This is that “lull” between the holidays and it’s a really nice time to be in town. Sunny and relatively warm and good beach weather although not always great to be on the water fishing because it can still be windy and rough. But, onshore it’s really pleasant and compared to other places in the world where winter is already hitting, La Paz is a great place to be. Best of all, in-between holidays is one of my favorite times. No one is here! It’s almost like the clock got turned back about 20 or 30 years! It’s really quiet. There’s a few snowbirds around, but not quite yet and the boulevards and streets are empty sometimes and it’s just the ocean and palm trees and a good time to hang out in a restaurant or read a book!
As far as fishing, in between bouts of winds, this past week wasn’t too very bad, but like I said, not many folks are fishing. This coming week, the forecasts call for some very strong double-digit winds.
However, for the folks that did go out, the best fishing was from Muertos Bay where it’s a bit more protected and fish are closer. Given the time of year and winter conditions increasing, surprisingly the fishing isn’t bad. In fact, there’s still some nice dorado hanging out and remarkably some of the dorado are larger than the ones we were getting during the regular season. There’s also some billfish hanging out and scattered tuna here and there.
Besides the winds, the biggest issue is getting live bait as the waters get colder and waves batter the areas where we catch the schools of sardines. So, we’re relying on lures and dead bait like calamari which will become more prevalent as we head into winter. Still, it’s nice to get warm-water species this late in the season.
Inshore, there’s jack crevalle, small cabrilla, sierra, bonito and snapper for the light tackle folks which are a lot of fun.
That’s our story!

MEXICAN MINUTE VIDEO FISHING REPORT FOR Nov. 19-26, 2017
WEEK AT A GLANCE
Weather – Getting cooler, but mostly great sunshine with highs in the mid-80’s and nights are in the mid-70’s. Getting breezier, especially the mornings and late afternoons.
Water – Surprisingly warmer than normal, but gradually cooling off
Fishing – If the conditions are right, there’s still blue-water species around like dorado, tuna, billfish and wahoo.
BIG PICTURE FISHING REPORT
Wow! Right in Muertos Bay, a November sailfish after a season of very few sailfish, young Miles Wagner, got caught and released this sail not far from his dad’s place at Rancho Costa there in the bay.
She just caught and released as striped marlin, but brought this nice fat yellowfin tuna back for dinner, Lisee Ferguson from Colorado Springs CO had a nice week of fishing. She’s there on the beach at Muertos Bay.
Not bad for one day of winter fishing for Peter Wiejaczka who got 4 similar dorado plus lost a wahoo.
Da head fella! It’s Gary Wagner with a yellowfin tuna no doubt to get ready for the dinner menu at his great place in Muertos Bay, Rancho Costa Resort.
LATE SEASON BLUE WATER SPECIES STILL HANGING IN THERE!
La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay/ Suenos Bay Report for Week of Nov. 19-26, 2017
Hope everyone had a spectacular, safe and happy Thanksgiving week!
Down here…
Still surprisingly OK fishing for blue-water pelagic species right now given how late in the season it is. It’s a simple formula. If the winds are blowing and it’s rough…as can be the case this time of year…it’s gonna be tough to fish. Or impossible. Or dangerous.
If the weather is cooperating, then there’s still some tuna, dorado, wahoo and billfish to be had. The biggest issue on those days, might be getting live bait. With the turbulent waters, it crashes on areas where the live bait is often holding which scatters the baits. With this happening every few days, it makes it hard to find the bait when the waters are calm and we have folks out fishing. So, often we’re using dead bait like squid or frozen baits…which seem to work OK.
Weather is nice, if you’re not out on the water and just coming to hang on the beach. It’s what a lot of folks are doing these days. Mostly a lot of snowbirds coming to enjoy the 80 degrees sunshine.
