La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay Fishing Report from Tailhunter International Sportfishing for Week of Jan. 17-24, 2016

sierra wagner 1-16 tags

Thanks to Gary Wagner, owner of the famous Giggling Marlin Restaurant in Cabo, who provided me with the pictures this week. Gary has a great place there in Bahia de los Muertos so he was on top of whatever fishing was happening. Here’s Gary with a big sierra. Makes great ceviche!

Pompano wagner 1-16

Another great eating fish is the pompano! One of the best sashime meats when sliced thin, but cooks up great too! Gary’s catch is another of the unusual fish we’ve been catching the last few weeks. Normally, we don’t see pompano until the spring!

Marlin release 1-16 tags

One of the marlin hook-ups that got away. Great shot!

Amy kasper 1 whales

Whale watching season is here and the gray whales are filling up out there at Lopez Mateos in Bahia Magdalena. Amy Kasper gives us a big smile as two of the gentle animals come to check out the panga. The whales are gonna be around until about early March and we’re booking trips right now to spend some time out there at Bahia Magdalena. It’s a great once-in-a-lifetime adventure in the calm waters of the bay!

Thanks, Sacramento! We had a great show at the ISE which took place at the California State Fairgrounds from Thursday to Sunday. Thanks to everyone who visited me, Jill and Catlyn at the booth and signed up also to come visit us in La Paz. We’re on our way now to the Seattle area at the Puyallup State Fairgrounds. We’ll be there from Wednesday to Sunday! Come visit us and check out all the great fishing, hunting and outdoor activities and displays!

WINDS BACK LAST WEEK AND FISH TAKE THE WEEK OFF TOO

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay Fishing Report for Week of Jan. 17-24, 2016

Not really much to tell you this report.  Last week for about the first time in 2 months the winds laid down over a series of days.  The bait came up.  The fish charged in. We had wahoo, yellowtail, sailfish and marlin ripping it off just a few hundred yards off the beach.

Then, Sunday came up and the winds came back and for the most part, fishing got stinky again.  On the upside, not many fishermen this time of year, anyway.   Some sierra, cabrilla, bonito and jack crevalle caught.  More typical of this time of year.  Two marlin hooked and lost.  It’s crazy to even see marlin in the middle of winter!

This week is looking better.  Tuesday and Wednesday will probably be too rough to fish, but the other days, the winds are moderate.  Not great…but fishable.  Air temps are really nice.  High 70’s to high 50’s.  Sun is out.  Nice time to be in town!

THANK YOU SACRAMENTO – WASHINGTON HERE WE COME!

WP_20160123_002-1

Bennett and Alicia Clegg came by the booth to set up their trip with their famlies to come fish in La Paz with us again and Alicia found out she’s our 2016 cover gal with the big rooster she caught last year! Congratulations!

BFF’s! Catlyn joins Jilly and our bestest amiga, Carrie Wilson from the Department of Fish and Wildlife. These two / three can be a fun handful in our booth.

“We just stopped for a quick tequila…” That’s how it starts…in our booth at Sacramento! They visit us every year! Cheers, boys!

Whew!  What a week and boy did we have fun at the International Sportsmans Expo at the California State Fairgrounds this past week!  The show as off-the-hook, super!  Jill and I were hoarse at the end of each of the 4 days as our aisles were packed and our booth was just a buzz of amigos and clients!  It was surely a party and thank you to all of you who came to visit and say hi.  Great to see so many of you  and thanks for the hospitality, especially all of you Tailhunter Tribal members who added to our caloric intake with goodies like candies, cookies, teriyaki chicken, sushi, Chinese pork buns, bottles of wine and tequila…you all rock!

Also thanks to all of you who booked trips to come see us in 2016.  We’re looking forward to your visit and I’ll start growing the fish bigger for you!

We’re on our way now north.  We’re actually in the van and Jill is driving so I can type! We’ve got 1 1/2 days to get to the Seattle area to set up for the Northwest Sportsmans Show at the Puyallup, Washington Fairgrounds.  This is another massive show and will go FIVE days from Wednesday to Sunday.  Come by and say hi….check out our new brochure and Tailhunter T-shirts.  Let’s talk about fishing in La Paz with Tailhunter this year!  Hope to see you!

CELEBRITY ALERT at our TAILHUNTER RESTAURANT

WHOAAA!  WHAT’S GOING ON HERE?

Ls Paz / Las Arenas-Muertos Bay Fishing Report for Week of Jan. 10-17, 2016

What’s going on?  For the last 3 months the fishing has been so spotty because of strong winds every week that it’s been hard to get out to fish.  Fishing has basically been a non-factor in anyone’s vacations!

But then this week…Whoaa!  I even had trouble getting photos for the fishing reports but many thanks to amigos Gary Wagner and Roger Thompson for getting out on the water!

It’s all about the wind, like I’ve been saying.

The winds chilled out and calmed down.  And the fish didn’t just bite.  They blew up!  And not the kind of fish we normally catch!  This is WINTER!  We’re supposed to be catching inshore rock fish like pargo, cabrilla, snapper and other species like bonito and jack crevalle.

What happened this week can only be chalked up to the unpredictable El Nino conditions . We had marlin…sailfish…yellowtail…rooster fish and a great bite on wahoo too!

The fish were literally not far out’ve Bahia de los Muertos and close to shore.   As one angler said, “I’ve never seen so much bait in the bay this time of year!”  Another of our anglers said he was trolling some Rapalas and they got 7 wahoo before 11 a.m. that morning and added yellowtail to the box as well.   There’s apparently a ton of mackerel and ladyfish in the bay too so that is a great sign!

I have no idea how much of an anomaly this is or how long it will last, but it’s pretty exciting stuff!  But a quick update…the winds started blowing again on Sunday.  And no fish.

We sure have alot of fun in our booth. Jill and I are joined for some levity by our good Colorado friends, Dr. Art Flippin and his wife Debbie Devine. They have visited us in La Paz many times over the years!

They visited us last year for the first time and had such a good time, they came back to visit us at the ISE show in Denver and book another trip for this year. Bill and Janice Fowler and brother Ed Thielke who show off one of our shirts he got last year and had Jill and I autograph!

It’s a wrap!  Just finished an incredible week at the Denver ISE show at the downtown Convention Center.   That’s two shows in the book.  First show at Billings, Montana and now Denver.  It was a grand time.  Thanks to so many of our amigos who came to see us and to all our new amigos that we met and even bigger thank you to all of you who came by and booked trips to come fish with us in La Paz this year!

And now, onto Sacramento for the International Sportsmens Expo at the California State Faigrounds.

The show is Thursday to Sunday and we’ll be in our booth every day!  Here’s more details:  http:/http://www.sportsexpos.com/attend/sacramento/

Gerardo marlin

Captain Gerardo’s clients didn’t want their photo taken with their striped marlin, but they did want a photo of their fish so he shouldered the task. Not the close proximity to the Las Arenas in the background.

billfish pancho

Israel and Manuel just figured to go out and catch some nice inshore fish for dinner. They ended up with a surprise sailfish and this marlin. The sail was released but could not release the marlin.

Marlin Pancho jr.

Those of you who know our famous Captain Pancho, he took his son, Francisco, Jr. (Panchito) out fishing this week. The 11-year-old got himself a marlin this week as well!

WP_20160109_001 edit

Just a big “MUCHAS GRACIAS!” to all our new and old Montana amigos who stopped by our booth to visit, say hi and set up their La Paz fishing trips. Thanks for treating us so well! We’ll be back!

BILLFISH IN JANUARY?

La Paz – Las Arenas/Muertos Bay Fishing Report for Week of Jan. 3-10, 2016

We finally had a pretty OK week as far as wind is concerned although it was still a bit blustery.    As storms slammed into California and other parts of the West and other areas of the U.S. there’s usually an affect down in Baja and this week was no different.  But, there were actually some “windows of opportunity” to get some fishing in.   The only issue…there’s not many fishermen in town.   Snow birds…yes.  Windsurfers…yes.  Yacht and sailors…yes.   Fishermen…not so much.

But, it’s off-season.  So, fishermen aren’t much expected anyway.

But, we did have some folks and I guess we just add-it-up-to-El-Nino…craziness. But, it’s the dead of winter and we caught BILLFISH!   We’re not supposed to be catching billfish right now.  Billfish time is when the water is warm and the weather is hot (relatively speaking).   We’re supposed to catching “cold water fish” like sierra and pargo and cabrilla (sea bass).

Anyway, so we go out…and just outside of Muertos Bay…striped marlin and sailfish are hanging out!  We’re pretty much talking a few hundred yards out.  How long will they stay?  What are they doing there?  I have no idea.  Just a fluke or not, no way to know.  But fun fishing.  No one complaining!

Winds blowing double digits early this coming week but later in the week, there’ll be some opportunities to get back on the water.

THANKS BILLINGS, MONTANA!  NOW HEADED TO DENVER!

WP_20160108_005-1

Tailhunter is on it’s 2016 road tour right now.  We just finished their first show of the year at the Great Western Rockies Sport Show in Billing, Montana and had a super time and got to meet lots of new amigos.  It was crazy cold down to subzero -12 degrees below zero one night.  But, we sure had an incredible time and enjoyed the heck out’ve the show, but moreso all the great Montana folks.  Thanks for the wonderful hospitality and we’ll see a bunch of you this year in La Paz to fish with us!

This week we head to the largest show in the area.  We’ll be in Denver, Colorado at the Convention Center for the International Sportman’s Show.  It runs Thursday to Sunday this week and will be a great time for the whole family with almost 700 vendors of camping, fishing, hunting, boating and other outdoor sports.  Come see us and let’s talk about fishing in La Paz this year!

Here’s a link with all the details and how to purchase tickets online:  Denver International Sportsmans Show Details

Hope to see you this week in Denver!

NOT MANY FISHERMEN AROUND & STILL WINDY

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay Fishing Report for Week of Dec. 27, 2015 to Jan. 3, 2016

Happy New Year Everyone!  Hope the year is off to a good start and that you all had fantastic holiday seasons.

Well…

Not much to tell.  Out of 7 days, we had 3 days that were fishable because of the strong winds on the other days.  That’s a better week than most of the weeks we’ve had the last 2 months where some weeks the wind was too strong on any days to get the pangas out.

I guess the other side is that there aren’t man fishermen either since it’s off-season.  For a good reason.  It’s the windy winter season which is why the area is filled up with more windsurfers and kite boarders than anything else.

For fishing, there’s some fish out there sporadically.  But, hard to get a decent read on it when there’s few fishermen and we’re not out everyday.  However, there’s some rooster fish around.  We did get a bite on what musta been a big wahoo as it tore right through 100-pound test.  There’s still some marlin around and inshore, pargo, cabrilla and some bonito.  But bait is hard to get and I’m surprised there’s not more sierra around this time of year.  Everything is screwy with El Nino.

This coming week seem like one of the calmest weeks in a long time so hopefully a better report next week!
