La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay/ Suenos Bay Fishing Report for Week of Jan. 23-30, 2023
MEXICAN MINUTE LA PAZ VIDEO REPORT
THE BIG PICTURE and the REST of the STORY…
As you can tell, it’s not the best weather for fishing looking at the sky and also how the guys are bundled up, but a nice variety of fish on one of the day when the wind didn’t blow so hard. In addition the yellowtail, there’s a couple of nice cabrilla, a sierra, a snapper and a bonito.
It’s a bit awkward when you’re the captain and guide and YOU catch fish, but the local client can’t hook any! Captain Pancho was just off the rocks at Bahia Muertos when he hooked this while jigging in the rough water. Again, you can tell it’s not the greatest weather.
Gary and Miles Wagner at Gary’s place at Rancho Costa in Bahia Muertos got out on one of the better days and got some tasty pompano and a tuna which are unusual to hook this time of year.
This is that time of the year from November to April when the fishing reports and not only boring to read, but also kinda boring to write! But, sometimes, maybe it’s just as important to tell you what is NOT happening. Especially, if you’re planning to visit on a vacation.
It was another especially cold and windy week with some gusts up to about 25 mph at times with cloudy skies and cold temps that kept even alot of locals inside and had us lighting our sidewalk heaters at our Tailhunter Restaurant on the La Paz waterfront.
There were a few little gaps here and there and it’s mostly locals fishing who have the ability to get out for a few hours of fishing then run quickly back in when it gets blustery or can check the weather forecasts and pick specific days to get on the water.
Reports from them as well as friends who are commercial fishermen (who HAVE to go out to make al living) indicate that there’s a little jag of tuna at the south end of Cerralvo Island if you can make that bumpy ride across the channel.
There are also a few stray dorado here and there. However, most of the catch has been yellowtail, some smaller amberjack, sierra, bonito, snapper and cabrilla…all inshore fish.
Live and dead bait as well as jigs have worked best.
WESTERN HUNT & CONSERVATION EXPO
This coming week, the Tailhunter Show Tour takes us to Salt Lake City for the massive Western Hunt & Conservation Expo. Always a giant show with almost 1000 exhibitors, vendors, outfitters, guide services and more covering the floor of the Salt Palace Convention Center in downtown Salt Lake City.
We’re looking forward to seeing so many of our Tailhunter Tribe members who always come to visit and book their trips for 2023. Jill and I will be in the booth every day from Thursday to Sunday, Feb. 2-5. We hope to see you there.
Here’s more information about the show and how to get tickets:

THE BIG PICTURE and the REST of the STORY…
Local La Paz amigos out’ve Bahia Muertos with a great day catch of cabrilla, sierra, bonito and even a couple of dorado!
Fernando was out with our Captain Pancho and was able to get across the channel to the south side of Cerralvo Island and got this hefty slugger yellowfin tuna on dead sardines.
As storms battered much of the U.S. this week, especially the west coast, it also had an effect on Baja and for us in La Paz. For most of the week it was cold and windy so fishing opportunities were limited which is pretty typical for this time of year.
Most of the folks who were out are locals who have flexible schedules and can pick-and-choose which days or even what hours are best for diminished winds.
Not surprisingly, there are fish to be caught.
If you can make your way across the rough channel to the south end of Cerralvo Island, there has been a little jag of 50-100 pound tuna. Nothing wide open, but a few have been hooked, especially by commercial panga fishermen. But, it can be a really rough ride out there especially with the winds roaring down the channel.
Not surprisingly, however, there is a nice mix of fish closer inside including sierra, jacks, cabrilla, snapper and even some dorado which is surprising and leads me to believe there’s still some warm water patches around. Bait is not a problem and jigs and lures are working effectively also.
THANK YOU RENO!
Thanks to everyone who came to visit us at our booth in Reno, Nevada last week for the Wild Sheep Foundation Show at the Reno/Sparks Convention Center. It was great fun and great chatting with lots of old and new amigos and glad many of you signed up to come down.
It was also fun (for us, but maybe not for alot of others) to get snow. Living in Mexico, it’s quite a novelty to get snow, but know that last week wasn’t fun for many of our friends especially in California with all the rain and snow.
This is the view from our hotel room as the snow started to fall about 2 hours into a 2 day storm in Reno.
Our next show is a BIG ONE. One of the largest we will have this year. It’s the
WESTERN HUNT & CONSERVATION SHOW
Feb. 2-5
SALT PALACE CONVENTION CENTER
SALT LAKE CITY UT
This is a view of only about 1/3 of the show floor
It’s our only show in Utah this year, but it’s massive and if you’re anywhere near the area, you can spend all 3 days in the show and still never see all the hunting, fish, camping, RV’s and more. We’ll be in our booth all 3 days to talk about coming to La Paz. Just look for the booth that has a bunch of our Tailhunter Nation friends hanging out there!
We’re filling up really fast so let us know if you want to come visit us this year to come fishing!
That’s our story!

THE BIG PICTURE and the REST of the STORY…
Our amigo and owner of famous Giggling Marlin Bar in Cabo, Gary Wagner (r) was hosting some friends at his place at Bahia Muertos Rancho Costa including former Golden State Warrior Clifford Ray had quite a day. They found a window between bouts of wind and got over to Cerralvo Island where they hit snapper, sierra and surprising yellowfin tuna.
_________________
We had the usual windy rough conditions most of the week, but earlier in the week some windows of opportunity popped up and we got some friends out from Bahia Muertos. They tell me there’s a ton of sardines out there and the waters are loaded with sierra. They got out to the south end of Cerralvo Island and found some 50-pound grade yellowfin tuna on dead sardines. Plus added in some pargo and sierra as well. Winds came up later in the week again and shut things down.
It’s been mostly sunny with temperatures in the high 70’s in the days and in the high 50’s at night. The extended forecast is showing the winds will be down early in the week, but mid-week the winds will really ramp up and there’s a good chance the port captain will shut down boat traffic and close the port.

Gama Santiago (on the right) and his amigo, Ivan, bundled up and had a surprisingly good day and a great mix of fish including amberjack, dorado, yellowtail and bonito. The fish were caught with a mix of live sardines and also using vertical jigging.
Miles Wagner with dad, Gary, owner of Rancho Costa in Bahia Muertos were out jumping all over the sierra. Gary says there’s lots of bait and the sierra are thick!
Nice yellowtail hamachi of Gama. He was using a yo-yo jig on the fish.
A mostly sunny week with nice temps between the mid-50’s and mid-60’s, but still not many folks on the water because of northern winds roughing up the waters. We had to cancel several trips because of it.
However, here and there some folks got out and found some windows of opportunity to get out in between gusts. Many of the folks we do get out are locals who have the opportunity to have flexible schedules to find the better days or else tourists who have wiggle-room in their vacation agendas to avoid the windier times.
Surprisingly, there’s still some dorado around which are usually gone by October or November. That leads me to believe there’s still some warm water patches here and there. However, most catches were colder water fish like small yellowtail and numerous sierra as well as bonito, jacks and cabrilla.
There’s lots of live sardines around although yo-yo jigs have also been productive if you can keep them out’ve the rocky bottoms.
THANK YOU DALLAS SAFARI CLUB!

THE BIG PICTURE and the REST of the STORY…
Again, not much to report. Most of the past few days were again blown out by strong winds.
As I often mention, winter time, fierce north winds blow down the Sea of Cortez making it not only rough and choppy but at times unsafe, especially if you’re headed north of town since the winds come out’ve the north and you need to go north to get out’ve La Paz Bay.
Alot of folks coming down are here to grab some sunshine and there’s no shortage of that, but then are surprised about the winds. Folks seem to think that weather stops being bad at the U.S. border.
Not so! If there’s storms in the north as there have been the last few weeks in the states, then it has a direct affect on weather in Baja and Mexico. In fact, the storms have been quite severe over the holidays and it’s been reflective on the winds in La Paz. They have been stronger and more severe than normal.
About the only folks out are locals and commercial fishermen who either need to work to feed their families or can pick-and-choose which dates are better to be on the water given windows of calmer conditions. I’m hearing there have been catches of sierra, some yellowtail, a few dorado (must be some warm water around), plus reef fish like snapper, triggerfish, cabrilla and some pargo.
The current forecast for the week shows more winds and maybe two days that are borderline in terms of getting on the water. The last few weeks, we’ve had to cancel any reservations that were made. These days it’s about a 50-50 chance of getting canceled or blown out. Hate to be a buzzkill, but would rather be honest about expectations.
