Jason Krieg was on a short last-minute trip to La Paz this weekend with his dad and got his first tuna ever that we estimate at about 60 solid pounds! Jason caught it on a sardine and it was his first tuna! He put it in the boat after a 30 minute battle! He had just gotten the fish to the panga when dad’s line went screaming and dad hooked a marlin (see the photos below).

Captain Armando and the Beckord guys…Dr. Bruce Beckord with son Brian and nephew Aaron show off one of their wahoo on the beach at Bahia de Los Muertos. They fished two days out of Muertos with Tailhunters and got a wahoo each day and lost a few others. They fished on the La Paz side and got roosterfish and yellowtail!

Our good friend, from Alaska, Rod Brown and Captain Joel show off the kind of yellowtail we’re popping just north of La Paz around Espirito Santo Island.

Yes! And dorado too! Minnesota, amigo, Jeff Brown and Captain Jorge with a really gorgeous dorado caught out’ve Bahia de Los Muertos!

All the way from Minnesota, Jeff Brown, usually visits La Paz once a year to fish with Tailhunter. He ran into some of that good yellowtail fishing north of La Paz while fishing with Tailhunter’s Captain Joel. Check out the flat water!

See the tuna at the top of the fishing report! Jason Krieg and is dad with a nice striped marlin. Jason was just pulling in his tuna to the panga when dad’s line went off and this nice striper bit a little sardine and it was off-to-the-races! Marlin could not be released and it was dad’s first! Marlin showing up early this year!

FULL MOON DOESN’T SLOW VARIETY OR QUALITY OF FISH!

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay Fishing Report for Week of March 29 to April 5, 2015

It has been a good Easter week for fishing although a bit unpredictable…in a good way! Even with a full moon! There really was some great trophy fishing this week. Maybe not alot of quantity, but the quality of some of the fish was really something to talk about. But, the wackiness was, our fishermen would go chase one kind of fish and get a total surprise with a different kind of fish. They’d go chasing after some other species and then something completely different would show up! Every day was different. Some boats did better than others and, in truth, some pangas didn’t do so hot while others not too far away were bent on fish. But, overall, fishing wasn’t too bad at all!

Las Arenas/ Bahia de los Muertos

With decent stocks of sardines, this is the area where our fleet found the most variety of fish. Roosterfish from 10-40 pounds were along the beach areas and just off the rocky drop-offs. Over at the island, in the area where we got those big tuna last week, the fish appear to be there roving back and forth and moving fast. A few were hooked but many folks just aren’t ready or equipped or experienced to put the wood to that grade of fish and all of them except one, broke off or were lost. But, it’s encouraging to know that there’s tuna there. The one we got this week was a 70 pounder. That’s alot of sashime!

As well, dragging the deep running Rapalas and Yo Zuri’s over the high spots, produced either nice yellowtail or (surprise!)…wahoo! A little early for the speedsters, but no one is complaining. Again, these are quality fish and we’re losing about 1/2 the hookups, but the wahoo coming up are nice 20-40 pound ‘hoos and for this time of year a super bonus. The yellowtail are running 20 pounds or so also with some larger ones getting rocked. If you know how to fish the iron rather than bait, the fishermen who know how to use the jigs are getting far more hooks ups on the ‘tails.

In between the islands and to fill out the mix, there’s some schoolie-dorado ranging around. Nothing really big, but fun-sized 10-15 pounders that are great on light tackle keep popping up as well as jack crevalle, big bonito, and pargo liso, pargo mulatto and smaller dog-tooth snapper. There are also early season billfish in the area as well.

La Paz

This is where the bigger fish are. Out around Espirito Santo Island. Yellowtail have really come on strong. Emphasize the word strong! These fish are 30 pound sluggers. Some larger. You have to turn their heads and as one of our first-time clients said, “These fish don’t nibble!” Made me crack up! No…you better have your socks pulled up and your arms buckled in because these fish slam…HARD! So many fish are getting lost just due to lack of experience. But still exciting. In the same areas, again, a bonus…there’s big amberjack biting. Two of our clients lost a handful of big yellowtail, but still boated an amberjack estimated at 90-pounds this past week. The same areas are also holding rooster fish and smaller pargo.

A big boy! From Orofino, Idaho, Mindy Pollock came to enjoy some spring break from her school-teaching and helps captaiin Pancho and husband Mick hold up a tuna estimated at 120 pounds they took near Cerralvo Island. Mick tells me they fought the fish for about 2 long hours!

World Record? Our super amigo, Ron Brown, from Wrangell, Alaska fishes with us usually twice a year. He caught this massive barred pargo off Espirito Santo Island. He sent me the photo and I showed it to several friends including several IGFA reps. They all said the fish looked larger than the current IGFA barred pargo of 29 pounds. When I asked Rod what he did with the fish he said he gave it to Captain Boli. When I asked our Captain Boli about the fish, he said, “It was delicious!”

This is what I’m talking about! Jeff Brown from Minnesota got several of these slug yellowtail fishing with Captain Boli north of La Paz. Several others were also lost.

La Paz is called the “Roosterfish Capital of the World” for good reason. Check out this fish estimated at over 60 pounds with Captain Boli and Jeff Brown. We had several large fish caught and released this week.

Two of the best fishermen I know and good friends from San Diego, Mitch Chavira and Charlie “Stix” McGee caught and released this paid of nice roosters near Espirito Santo Island.

WHAT A DIFFERENCE A WEEK MAKES! WOW!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of March 22-29, 2015

We had a mixed bag this past week. The bad days were so-so, but the GOOD days produced some really solid rocking fishing. Both our La Paz AND Las Arenas fleet got into some quality fish…maybe not quantity…but the quality of some of the fish really made it. With air temps into the high 80’s and low 90’s, conditions were mostly good. Co-incidentally, the days when the wind blew are the days when fishing took a powder!

So, the better the weather…the better the fishing. And, like I said, the good fishing was pretty darned good!

For our Las Arenas fleet, inshore the mix produced some pargo, cabrilla, bonito and sierra. But, the big news were the roosters that started to show up with some fish going 30-40 pounds (almost all fish released). But, we also had a good showing at Cerralvo Island of some of the fatter yellowtail as well. Even more exciting was the fast yellowfin tuna that came breezing through!

For our La Paz fleet, that’s where the bigger bad boys started to bend some rods finally. There were some slow days, but the good days produced some slug yellowtail; larger grades of cabrilla and big-time pargo mulatto; plus around Espirito Santo Island, the kind of 30-70 pound rooster fish the La Paz area is known for. There were even some marlin hook-ups. Live bait was the ticket, but on the yellowtail for those guys who know how to fish the iron, it was a bonus! Reportedly, there are some yellowtail just inside of La Paz Bay which would mean there are fish less than 5 minutes off the beach. We’ll have to keep an eye on that.

FINISH WITH A BANG AND NOW TIME TO HEAD HOME!

We finished our 3 months on the road with a blast of a show at the Fred Hall Fishing Show at the Del Mar Fairgrounds in San Diego. Oh my…so many amigos stopping by and it was like a massive fiesta at the Tailhunter Booth. And now it’s time to pack it up head home and let’s get the season rolling! Let’s fishing!

However, before we do that, Jilly and I just wanted to extend a massive MUCHAS GRACIAS to all of you who made us so welcome along the way and all the great shows. From fellow-vendors to visiting amigos and family, you’re the best. As we moved from week to week and from show to show in Sacramento…Denver…Seattle…Portland…Phoenix…Yakima…Long Beach…Salt Lake City and San Diego, it could not have been better and we thank you for all the smiles and laughs. Tailhunter has the most awesome tribal members and the time went way too fast. We’re blessed and God bless all of you. We’ll see you in La Paz!

Yes! There’s some trophy pelagic species already here. Take a look…a 25 pound wahoo and some nice cabrilla! I wish I had more photos this week, but a number of nice fish were lost this week plus there just weren’t alot of photos!

Some good inshore fishing this week with varying sizes and species like these delicious snapper an cabrilla from Ian Arreola.

COLD WATER – WARM WATER SPECIES PRODUCE VARIETY

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of March 16-22, 2015

Conditions seem to be changing very quickly here in our area. It’s the only explanation why we’re getting such a crazy variety of fish at the moment. Not only are we getting our cold water/ winter species, but some warmer water/ pelagic species are also showing up.

The areas seem to differ, but there’s a pretty interesting mix of fish.

Around Cerralvo Island and with our Tailhunter Las Arenas fleet, we’re getting the usual species like pargo up to about 10 pounds; cabrilla (Mexican sea bass) to about 6 pounds; bonito, sierra, jack crevalle and smaller amberjack. However, we’re also getting rooster fish, school-sized dorado to about 10 pounds and we even got a 40-pound tuna this week off the island. We also hooked marlin and wahoo this week but they broke off.

North of La Paz in the areas around Espirito Santo Island and the high spots, we finally seem to have found some decent spots of yellowtail that are willing to bite on the larger baits as well as on the iron. There’s a few dorado around as well.

GREY WHALES AT LOPEZ MATEOS – WHALESHARKS IN LA PAZ BAY

It’s late in the season, but we’re still seeing the big grey whales at Lopez Mateos at the north end of Bahia Magdalena. Normally, they’re gone by now but, in what seems like a record-breaking whale season, the daily tours we’re running there are still seeing a pretty decent number of moms and babies. Not sure how much longer they will be around, but we’ve surely enjoyed them.

Inside La Paz Bay, the juevnile whale sharks have been hanging out as well and seem to be increasing in number. As many as a dozen “babies” have been seen by our snorkelers. These “babies” have been 10-20 feet long!

LAST SHOW OF THE SEASON THEN HOME TO LA PAZ!

What a road tour it has been! Sacramento…Denver…Puyallup (Seattle)…Portland…Yakima…Phoenix…Long Beach…Boise…Salt Lake City…thanks to everyone who has given us such a great time along the way. You all rock! And now, here we are in San Diego. Gonna go out with a bang! Then, back to La Paz and let’s get to some FISHING!

After 3 months on the road, we’re going out with a bang at one of our favorite shows! Starting on Thursday and going through Sunday (March 26-29th), we’ll be at the Fred Hall Fishing and Boating Show in San Diego at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. This is some GOOD fish! Some of the best eating rockfish from our area and typical of winter fishing. Nice snapper and good-sized cabrilla (Mexican seabass) with Captain Jorge from our Tailhunter Fleet, and our good amigos, Marianne Sugawara and Jeff Sakuda at Bahia de los Muertos.

Changing conditions and warming waters bring in the blue water species and it looks like they’re here early. Butch Tropez and Captain Adolfo with our first official striped marlin of the season taken just offshore. The marlin was not able to be released.

Jeff Sakuda makes several trips a year to La Paz and knows how to fish our waters. He fished several days this week and got this nice snapper and cabrilla among other species!

The best indication that warmer waters are moving in are the showing of dorado (mahi mahi) in our waters. Butch Tropez with a double handful of schoolie-sized dorado at Bahia de Los Muertos.

GOOD CONDITIONS BUT CHANGING FISHERY SHOWS VARIETY!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of March 9-15, 2015

Quite a mix of fish this week. Lately, these days, it’s like a box of cracker jack. You just don’t know what the prize will be when you empty it out. Same with fishing. There’s just no telling what you’ll be catching either. One day, it’s a mix of inshore rock fish. Next day, the rock fish don’t bite, but rooster fish show up. The next day, it’s some pelagic species.

That’s what it was like this week. There was no predicting what might turn up for our fishermen.

On day it was cabrilla (sea bass and bonito). Another day, neither the bonito or cabrilla would bite and instead pargo bit in the rocks and they got some rooster fish along the beach. The following day, when the rock fish wouldn’t bite, venturing a bit outside a tad and our guys got marlin and dorado!

I wish there was a little more predictability, but we seem to be in a transition time when there’s warm and cold water species mixing it up a bit as the waters move away from winter to more spring-like conditions. I think we’ll continue to see a wide variety of species for awhile. We do have reports of yellowtail (finally) north of La Paz by commercial guys and good amounts of bait. Wind can still be an issue but with each week, week should be diminishing.

STILL LOTS OF WHALES IN MAG BAY FOR RECORD SETTING YEAR!

On other lines, we do have alot of folks in town going whale watching at Magdalena Bay where the grey whales seem to be having a record year and the whale watching is off-the-charts. Check out the video. The past season has been a great opportunity for folks to really get right up close to these amazing animals. Closer to town and right in La Paz Bay, more than a 3 dozen juvenile whale sharks have been in the shallow waters and alot of the tourists and locals alike have been swimming with them.

ROOSTERFISH – PARGO and WHALES HIGHLIGHT WEEK

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Feb. 22-March 1, 2015

There just weren’t that many fishermen in town this week. Most folks in town this time of year are snow-birds just trying to get away from the colder areas they live in. Or as one visitor told me this week, “We give up. We live on the east coast and could not stand one more snowstorm. We went as far as we could go as long as we had sunshine.”

It was surely a good week to be in town. Temperatures were in the 80’s although there were some afternoon clouds that dropped some quick showers up in the mountains. Pretty pleasant overall. And not much wind which was pretty good for fishing…if we had more fishermen! But, it’s to be expected during the off-season when we’ve always got the potential for some strong northern winds that can bounce you off the water.

But, for the few fishermen we had, there was some decent inshore fishing. The highlights were the pargo and rooster fish. We don’t have alot of photos this week because…well, most of the rooster fish are released (yay), but there were some nice 10-20 pound fish. Close in tight to Bahia de Los Muertos and south towards Boca de Alamo.

The other fish that came up nice were the pargo. But, we don’t have alot of photos of them either this week because…well, the fish bite, but if you have ever fished for pargo, you also know how tough they can be pulling these sluggers out’ve the rocks. Probably not a tougher fish out there and this time of year is when the big redfish come up into the shallows to spawn. We “estimate” that the fish that were lost would’ve been in the 10-30 pound range.

Other species included bonito, sierra and cabrilla (sea bass).

WHALES

Although we didn’t have alot of fishermen, we DID have some great whale watching and that’s what alot of folks come to La Paz for this time of the year.

We’re having a spectacular year with an abundance of grey whales in Bahia Magdalena and daily trips headed out and lots of whales this year. Normally, they’re gone by mid-March but show no signs so far, of leaving in any hurry! It’s been a great opportunity to literally get close to the whales and touch them.

WHALE SHARKS

How about swimming with an animal the size of a school bus?

Thanks to Kody and Rick Kasper for these great photos and this week’s great video of Kody underwater.

There have also been some great opportunities right in the bay to swim with the whalesharks. The “babies” which are about 10-15 feet long are in shallow water but an incredible experience to get in the water with anywhere from one to more than a dozen whalesharks in shallow water.

I’ll be at the Long Beach Convention Center for the Fred Hall Fishing and Outdoor Show from Wednesday to Sunday. This is the 69th year for this show and it’s always packed with great gear, trips and lots of amigos! It’s the big party!

yellowtail pargo snapper triggers sierra tags

There’s a variety of fish that came up this week. Red snapper…yellowtail…sierra…and yes triggerfish. All great eating fish.

Our whaelwatching tours are in full swing and the whales are being incredibly cooperative! Kevin Kennedy and his group got the full experience in the calm waters of Mag Bay. Not sure how much longer these amazing animals will be here, but normally, they’re around until mid-March or so! Contact us and we’ll set you up!

We say good-bye to a fantastic La Paz Carnaval . Many watched the parades from our Tailhunter Restaurant and had a great time.

OK WEATHER GOES WITH OK FISHING!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Feb. 15-22, 2015

Good week for weather and fishing this past week…relatively speaking! I mean, it’s still winter so there were some breezy days, but compared to other weeks, the conditions were much more fishable and given that many of the folks in town are snow birds just wanting to get warm (especially those trying to thaw out from the east coast of the U.S, not too many folks are complaining about 83 degree days.

The fishing was predictable. With good weather, we’re able to get into more species and more variety to the fishing as well.

Among the larger species, some yellowtail popped up off Cerralvo Island including some nicer grades of fish in the 20-30 pound class. Some nice horses. Bait hasn’t been good as far as the mackerel are concerned which is what the yellows really charge, but using iron and heavier jigs (of course losing stuff in the rocks), scrambled egg and blue/white patterns produced fish. Also slow trolling mackerel-patterned crank baits like the bigger Rapala xRap 20’s and Yo-Zuri’s in blue and grey got hits as well.

Also, given it’s only February, I was nicely surprised by the rooster fish we got this week. Nothing big but fun-sized 5-10 pounders are great on light tackle, especially so close to shore. Normally, we tend to see these fish about a month later.

Same with the dorado. Again, nothing gigantic, but good-sating sized 6-12 pound “doraditos” again made for some good light tackle action. Just like the roosters, I wouldn’t expect the mahi to be in so early in the year.

More typical were the other species we caught. Especially, the inshore types. This included snapper and pargo, some decent 10-pound cabrilla and sierra along some of the beach drop offs.

The coming week’s weather is looking pretty good so hopefully better fishing reports next week. Truthfully, this time of the year, there aren’t that many fishermen in town, but everyone is hooking up and getting good variety.

WHAT A WEEK ON THE ROAD!

Once again…had a BLAST rocking the booth in the Phoenix University Football Stadium. Hard to believe the Super Bowl was played there two weeks ago!

Due to scheduling, Jill and I split up this week on our Tailhunter show tour. Jill went up to Yakima, Washington for the Central Washington Sportsmans Show. I was further south at the International Sportsman Show in Phoenix. We both had a great week and it was great seeing so many new and old amigos! Thanks to everyone for coming and visiting us and for those of you who booked trips to come see us this year in La Paz, we’re looking forward to seeing you again later this year!

We now move off to Southern California to set up for the massive Long Beach Fred Hall Fishing and Hunting Show at the Long Beach Convention Center March 4-8. Once again, we split up! Jill goes north to the Idaho Sportman’s Show at the fairgrounds in Boise, Idaho! If you’re going to be anywhere near these venues come out to see us and say hi!

Jim and Brenda Bovee from San Diego hit the sweet spot for wind mid-week and turned in two days of nice varietal fishing with pargo, snapper, sierra and cabrilla!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Dec. 28, 2014 to Jan. 4, 2015

Happy New Year Everyone! Hope the new year is off to a good start for you!

We had another windy week here in La Paz, but about Wednesday it started to calm down and suddenly everyone wanted to go fishing! We put out more pangas in one day than we had in the two previous weeks combined! I guess everyone was waiting for those pesky north winds to settle down.

Anyway, we sure got quite a variety of fish. Nothing big, but for so many of our fishermen who are really in town for some sunshine and not necessarily hardcore anglers, there was some great action and fish to bring back for dinner. There’s alot of out-of-towners in La Paz right now for the holidays who are just trying to squeeze in an activity like snorkeling or diving or a day of fishing here-and-there.

So, for those who went out, we had cabrilla (sea bass) around 2-5 pounds. Smaller snapper and pargo of about the same size. Some really nice-sized sierra and some great bonito to bend the rods. Additionally, we had some surprise fish as well with some rooster fish caught and released that were going about 10-15 pounds; a few school-sized dorado; and even had a wahoo take down a lure, but regretfully come unbuckled. Oh well…

Still, great action and lots of fun without having to go out too far from shore or get bounced around out there in rough water. As the weekend came up the winds ramped up a bit and so did the fishing, but as you’re probably reading this, the winds have likely petered out and the seas are flat again. It’s going to be like this throughout the winter months which is pretty typical. It’s definitely chillier. I know many people will laugh, but our guys were complaining about the “cold water” which is now at 72 degrees!

The Tailhunter van has left the station and Jill and I are on the road and will be at the first of our “road shows” this week and for the next three months! First stop will be the International Sportsmans Expo at the California State Fairgrounds in Sacramento! This is a huge show and will run from Thursday to Sunday (January 8-11th). Our booth is in it’s usual place in the main hall.

Mid-week, we got slammed by some incredible winds. Guts up to 50-70 mph ripped into the area and our normally placid seas turned into a cauldron we rarely see. Check out the waves hitting the breakwater at Las Cruces north of La Paz. That’s Cerralvo Island in the background.

New York in the house. The day after the winds finally left us, we were able to find some dorado with some big boys mixed with school-sized fish. Captain Jorge poses with Doug Duval, Judie Pierce and Bill Harvey all from New York on the beach at Bahia de los Muertos.

DORADO BITE SANDWICHES BIG WINDS ROARING IN MID-WEEK

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Nov. 23-30, 2014

What a freakish week we had here in La Paz. This is the time of year when things transition from warmer conditions to cooler conditions. With it, we start to get more and more windy days with winds whipping from the north.

Well, lately, we’ve had more “breezy days.” That’s normal. It’s expected. I never expected what we had this week!

They talk about winter roaring in like a lion. Well, it didn’t just roar. It tore in like a freight train! Tuesday to Thursday, wind of 30-50 mph generated huge waves and gust up to 70 mph had the port captain closing down the port and keep folks off the water It was pretty incredible to watch…from the shore! Definitely NOT a good time to try to be on the water!

Huge waves crashed against beaches and against the concrete sidewalks of the waterfront Malecon throwing giant plumes of spray and water as far as parked cars across the street. Strolling pedestrians were sent scampering each time a wave crashed in much the same way that kids run through sprinklers in the summer except one could get seriously soaked by the giant swell. Even within the bay, it was uncharacterically white-capped and foaming. Many folks just parked themselves on the shore or in a nearby restaurant or bar to watch the display!

Then, on Friday, it pretty much disappeared!

And out we went fishing again. Just like before the storm, the dorado bit pretty readily with fish in the 20-30 pound class not uncommon but decent numbers of 10-15 pound fish as well. Some rooster fish and pargo were also hooked. The biggest issue was that those ripping winds really tore up the water and turned things over. For our guys who went out’ve La Paz, all the found was green and brown dirty water. The better fishing was from Las Arenas where the area was a bit more protected from the winds although waters were still not optimal. But at least we found fish!

Really hard to get a read on things. Not many folks in town or many fishermen as Thanksgiving week isn’t a big week here in La Paz for tourism. But, still a nice time to spend onshore as the sun was still comfortably warm. We’ll get a run of folks in between now and Christmas, but this week, was just nice to spend onshore and watching Mother Nature do her thing!

Kris Honkola from San Rafael CA was a first-time visitor with Tailhunter and set out to get a wahoo with us. On his very first day he tagged up this big-headed speedster south of Cerralvo Island.

Cathy Corda, here with husband Craig, had a pretty fantastic day. Not only did they get into the dorado school big-time, but Cathy got her first wahoo. What makes it more remarkable is that the fish bent out the hook and when they got it aboard…THE FISH WAS NOT HOOKED! The line made a half-hitch loop around the tail and had lassoed the fish! Great story!

Our long-time amigos from the San Francisco Bay area, Bill Lee and John McLucas had a week’s-worth of good fishing with our Las Arenas fleet. Here’s a sample of dorado, cabrilla and a rainbow runner.

It was a pretty good week for billfish…marlin and sailfish with a remarkable number of hookups! Most caught fish were released. Alexa Kadota took these spectacular photos right close to shore as her dad’s sailfish fought close to the panga.

Our new amiga from Utah, Janie Edge and her husband, Randy were fishing with Captain Victor and did pretty good on some schoolie dorado.

Nothing like a vacation with dad and getting pulled outta school! John Rogers from San Ramon, CA, took his boys, Jared and Jay out for a few days fishing with us and show off some of their dorado they caught north of La Paz around Espirito Santo Island.

These two brothers had to be some of the funniest guys all week…Andy and Rafi Montejano pose with a big pargo and cabrilla which we saw more of this week as the weather and conditions change.

You can tell waters are getting a little cooler because we don’t normally get pompano except in the springtime. However, our amigo John Ehlers from the Denver CO area, got this tasty pompano just off Bahia de los Muertos with Captain Pancho.

SEASONS CHANGING AND GETTNG COOLER BRINGING DIFFERENT FISH VARIETY:

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Oct. 20-27, 2014

We could not be asking for better conditions right now these last two weeks or so. Air temperatures have dropped significantly down to the low to mid-90’s. The humidity is gone so it’s just great sunshine. Water temps are still in the mid-80’s. And, although winds seem to be gradually increasing, there’s just a hint of perfect breeze each day. Barely a cloud in the sky. Nights are ideal and in the 70’s. If you’re walking around La Paz, it’s like being in a post card.

Basically, I think it means conditions are changing. They’re moving from the warmer summer days now tapering into our late fall bite.

Fishing has been OK to good for the most part. Not spectacular, but there were some nice highlights. I think we’re in transition now for the seasons. However, for most anglers fishing a few days, everyone is getting fish. There’s some nice highlights and bonus, and some days when the dorado go crazy but then there’s others when the bite drops off and gets a little more picky. Like I said, things are transitioning.

Dorado are still our mainstay with fish in the 10-20 pound class mostly. Some larger. Quite few smaller. Great fun on light tackle. Most of the larger fish have been lost, but we have seen some in the 40 pound category come and go…and keep going! But, dorado make up about 70% of our bite. But the fish seem more scattered and wide-ranging. There are still some concentrated schools, but they seem to be breaking up and moving quite a bit. One day we find the spots and other days it’s hunt-and-peck. It changes almost daily.

However, that’s been rounded out with a pretty nice bite on billfish. Striped marlin are around as well as blue and black marlin. But, the big surprise have been the number of sailfish around. We had some days when there were multiple hook-ups on our pangas. One day one of our pangas hooked 4 and were able to release 3. Another released 2. Several others released 1’s and 2’s and numerous other billfish have been seen feeding on bait or in the middle of the bonito and dorado schools. We had two large blue marlin hooked and dropped during the week.

The variety this time of year has been increasing as well. In addition to the billfish and dorado, wahoo keep popping up near Espirito Santo Island and inshore, we’re getting more pargo, cabrilla, red snapper, and even some sierra which is a sure indication that waters are cooling a bit. Additionally, we’re getting rainbow runners, lots of bonito, jack crevalle and still finding some school-sized rooster fish along the beaches. Not alot of big fish, but … Lots of great action!
