La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of March 1-8, 2015

It wasn’t a great week of fishing. It wasn’t bad either. It had it’s moments. It just kinda depended where you were fishing and what day you happened to pick to fish.

There weren’t alot of fishermen this past week, and there weren’t alot of fish. But on the better days, there was some incredible variety. Very surprising for this time of the year that we normally call off-season. But, it’s kind of typical as well. Perhaps it was a combination of variables. I usually don’t put alot of stock in the full moon thing, but we did have a big moon. Maybe not much in-and-of-itself, but there were also some windy days as well and checking water temperatures, there were some big patches of cooler water around. So, maybe it was a combination.

However, as I said, this week had it’s moments!

There were some nice ones. Probably the most exciting was the showing of wahoo off Cerrlavo Island. Pretty early in the year to be sticking the speedy ‘hoo! We got few but also lost a few.

Plus, we finally put some yellowtail in the boats as well as a few dorado. Mix that in with some pargo, cabrilla and even some rooster fish and a bunch of bonito and there was some OK action to be had.

Our shows in Long Beach at the Convention Center for the Fred Hall Fishing Show and at the Idaho Sportsmans Show were off-the-hook, with lots of friends coming to visit us…share some laughs…and talk about coming to fish with us in La Paz!

For the past two weeks, Jill and I have been forced to split up our tour schedule because of the crazy show calendar. I did the Phoenix Show and she went to Yakima WA. This past week, Jilly held the fort in the booth at the great Boise, Idaho Sportsmans Show. I covered us at the Long Beach Convention Center for the 69th Annual Fred Hall Fishing Show.

What a time we had! We can’t thank everyone enough for all the great time and all the amigos who came to visit us. Personally, I want to give a big shout-out to everyone who also came by to wish me a happy birthday and also for all the thoughtful gifts and food. Wow! Just incredible. And for everyone who looked in on Jilly in Boise and helped her out we are especially grateful. We booked lots of fishing trip reservations for the season and we’re looking forward to seeing so many of you again later in the season down in La Paz. For all the rest of you, let us know what we can do to assist you with coming to see us!

Here we come Salt Lake City at the Expo Center in Sandy! We always have a great time visiting with our amigos!

We’ll after almost 3 months on the road, we’re finally coming near the end, but not quite yet! Jill and I will be together again instead of doing shows separately. Next stop, Salt Lake City at the ISE show at the Sandy Expo Center. The show will be Thursday to Sunday and always promises a great time and we have so many of our amigos in the area. ROOSTERFISH – PARGO and WHALES HIGHLIGHT WEEK

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Feb. 22-March 1, 2015

There just weren’t that many fishermen in town this week. Most folks in town this time of year are snow-birds just trying to get away from the colder areas they live in. Or as one visitor told me this week, “We give up. We live on the east coast and could not stand one more snowstorm. We went as far as we could go as long as we had sunshine.”

It was surely a good week to be in town. Temperatures were in the 80’s although there were some afternoon clouds that dropped some quick showers up in the mountains. Pretty pleasant overall. And not much wind which was pretty good for fishing…if we had more fishermen! But, it’s to be expected during the off-season when we’ve always got the potential for some strong northern winds that can bounce you off the water.

But, for the few fishermen we had, there was some decent inshore fishing. The highlights were the pargo and rooster fish. We don’t have alot of photos this week because…well, most of the rooster fish are released (yay), but there were some nice 10-20 pound fish. Close in tight to Bahia de Los Muertos and south towards Boca de Alamo.

The other fish that came up nice were the pargo. But, we don’t have alot of photos of them either this week because…well, the fish bite, but if you have ever fished for pargo, you also know how tough they can be pulling these sluggers out’ve the rocks. Probably not a tougher fish out there and this time of year is when the big redfish come up into the shallows to spawn. We “estimate” that the fish that were lost would’ve been in the 10-30 pound range.

Other species included bonito, sierra and cabrilla (sea bass).

WHALES

Although we didn’t have alot of fishermen, we DID have some great whale watching and that’s what alot of folks come to La Paz for this time of the year.

We’re having a spectacular year with an abundance of grey whales in Bahia Magdalena and daily trips headed out and lots of whales this year. Normally, they’re gone by mid-March but show no signs so far, of leaving in any hurry! It’s been a great opportunity to literally get close to the whales and touch them.

WHALE SHARKS

How about swimming with an animal the size of a school bus?

Thanks to Kody and Rick Kasper for these great photos and this week’s great video of Kody underwater.

There have also been some great opportunities right in the bay to swim with the whalesharks. The “babies” which are about 10-15 feet long are in shallow water but an incredible experience to get in the water with anywhere from one to more than a dozen whalesharks in shallow water.

FRED HALL FISHING SHOW – Wednesday to Sunday

This is it! This is the BIG ONE of the YEAR! We’ve been on the road now for 2 months and had some spectacular shows in Sacramento…Denver…Puyallup (Seattle)…Portland…Phoenix and Yakima. And now…we’re splitting up again!

I’ll be at the Long Beach Convention Center for the Fred Hall Fishing and Outdoor Show from Wednesday to Sunday. This is the 69th year for this show and it’s always packed with great gear, trips and lots of amigos! It’s the big party!

BOISE IDAHO SPORTSMANS SHOW- Thursday to Sunday

Regretfully, Jill and I have to split up this week. She’ll be at the Boise Fairgrounds from Thursday to Sunday. Another great show and we hate splitting up. Jill really wants to be with me in Long Beach and I’m sure going to miss being with her and not seeing our friends in Idaho. But, it’s a way great super show! Come see Jilly!

From Napa and only time for one day of fishing, here’s NIck Clark and his girlfriend Jackie. I was a bit worried because of prediciions of wind and rain, but they did OK…several roosters released…a wahoo lost…two small dorado…some bonito….a red pargo and a cabrilla! Not too bad at all! It’s hard to tell, but if you look closely at Jackie’s left hand…NICK got the best catch of all…HE ASKED JACKIE TO MARRY HIM! Apparently, she said YES!!!

Using yo-yo iron, commercial guys around Cerralvo Island are hooking some nice 20 pound class yellowtail. Hopefully, this week we can get some of our sports anglers on the fish. Thanks to Hawk for the photo!

LA PAZ CARNAVAL 2015 is in full -swing this week! Everyone is out partying on the waterfront with lots of parades, floats, dancing, concerts, food and fun! Carnaval goes until FAT TUESDAY Feb. 17th. Great time to be in town.

FISHING MIXED BUT LOTS GOING ON IN LA PAZ!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Feb. 8-15, 2015

Relatively speaking…Not much to report this week. We had a bit of wind which is characteristic of this time of year. Also, there’s more folks in town for whale watching and the big week-long Carnavale than for fishing so everyone was having fun, nevertheless.

The folks that did go out, many were first-timers just looking for some sunshine and a day out on the water regardless of action so, in cases like that, best to keep close and have some fun and catch fish. The results were enjoyably predictable with cabrilla and bonito up to about 5 pounds. Good action on some schools of tough jack crevalle up to about 10 pounds. Some pargo including some larger ones busted off in the rocks plus sierra along the beaches. All great eating fish.

But, not to be discouraged, we did have two wahoo come off and several roosterfish were released so there’s alot of variety in the water and decent action!

The tuna bite we were hoping for, never really materialized although the commercial guys say there’s some fast-movers running with the dolphin schools outside Cerralvo Island or momentarily popping up at the drop-offs in deeper water then heading back down before anyone can get to them. Encouragingly, more yellowtail are showing up on the commercial boats using heavier iron as not much bait is around. But those guys go out no matter the conditions and it’s often a bit too rough to put first-timers out there and make the run on a sketchy bite. This week, we’ve got some better experienced anglers coming out so hopefully some better results on the more quality fish.

The whale watching is really where everyone is these past few weeks. The whales over at Bahia Magdalena have been incredible. The folks we’ve been sending over have been having a kick getting up close to these amazing animals in the calm waters of the bay and the whales and the new calves have shown no hesitancy to come right up and check out the funny-looking creatures in the pangas that can’t stop laughing.

Also, this week since Feb. 12th and continuing to the 17th, La Paz has been in full-turbo CARNAVAL mode with the city in quite the party mood with parades, booths, lots of food, giant concerts and pretty much shutting down the whole waterfront area in a giant street fair every day and night. Great time to be in town!

JONATHAN and JILL SPLIT UP!

Not really per se! But our Tailhunter 2015 Road Tour hits a fork in the road!

Jilly and I have been on the road now since just after Christmas and have had some incredible shows in Sacramento, Denver, Puyallup (Seattle), and most recently in Portland at all the big fishing and hunting shows telling folks about fishing with us in La Paz. What an amazing time we’re having and the bookings have been off-the-charts and it’s so great to see so many old friends along the trail!

Well, as the schedule would have it Jill and I have to split up this week. Jill heads for the show in YAKIMA, WASHINGTON at the SUN DOME there at the Yakima Fairgrounds.

Jonathan goes to the other big show in PHOENIX, ARIZONA at the UNIVERSITY of PHOENIX STADIUM where the NFL Cardinals play and we just had the SUPER BOWL!

We hate to split up, but it’s the way the schedule worked out and we surely don’t want to miss either show and seeing our amigos in both locations. YELLOWTAIL YES…BUT TUNA IN FEBRUARY?

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Feb. 1-8, 2015

After two weeks of on-again-off-again funky weather that included both wind AND rain, we finally had a week where the clouds parted a bit and we got sunshine and calmer seas.

Accordingly, I’m not surprised that we got into a few more fish and had some better conditions. There was still some wind, but it was still better than it had been!

We had quite a variety and I guess the biggest news was the surprise jag of tuna found at the north end of Cerralvo Island. Commercial fishermen had been trickling reports to us of fast moving tuna now and then, often moving too fast to get on them, but we finally stuck one. James “Hawk” Davis our amigo, stuck a fish we estimate at perhaps 60 pounds dragging a Rapala. Now, normally, we don’t see tuna until maybe late spring or early summer and it’s too soon to call this a “tuna bite.” But, it’s darned exciting to see a good-grade ahi hit the deck! We’ll keep you posted.

Hawk got his fish on 40 pound test and his xRap30 was the mackerel pattern. According to Hawk, there’s yellowtail around in the shallow spots, but that’s the problem. Dragging deep running lures like the XRap30 means losing alot of expensive Rapalas in the rocks!

As for other species, there’s some slugger yellowtail also around the island with most fish running 20-30 pounds. A nice grade of hefty fish that can pull like crazy. This is the right time for more of them to show up.

In addition, talk about a buffet of species…we also have been getting into pargo…both the big mullet snapper (pargo liso) as well as the barred pargo mulatto that have the pretty orange and green bars on them. Fish have been 5-20 pounds which might not sound like much until you try putting the wood to one of these guys and try to pull him outta the rocks.

We also found schools of dorado…some smaller school-sized rooster fish…bonito and cabrilla for a nice mix of fish.

Conditions look like they’re going to hold so hopefully, we’ll get some better fishing reports coming up!

TAILHUNTER WHALE WATCHING TRIPS IN FULL SWING!

Our daily trips out to Bahia Magdalena for whale watching have been having some incredible times! Lots of whales in the water and it’s an amazing experience to get close to these incredible animals. They usually hang out in the area until about mid-March or so. Plenty of time to see them before they start their long journey north back to the Bering Sea by Alaska! CARNAVAL COMING TO TOWN!

Just a heads-up that the 2015 La Paz Carnavale kicks it off this week with the giant street fair…incredible concerts…huge parades…fireworks and food! The revelry starts on Feb. 12 and goes to the 17th! Alot of the action takes place right in front of our Tailhunter Restaurant on the malecon which is also the best seat on the waterfront to watch the parades!

Don and Debbie White have been fishing with us for years! They’re coming again this April! But, they brought me some awesome fuzzy slippers to wear in the booth because they know I stand for 10-12 hours straight and my feet are killing me!

An incredible shout-out THANK YOU / MUCHAS GRACIAS to our own Rod Brown from Wrangell, Alaska. Not only did he come all the way down to Portland but he put together the most amazing photos book called, “Fishing with Jonathan and Jill” filled with pages and pages of some of the fantastic fish he and his family and friends have caught with us over the years! I’m going to keep this somewhere very special. We were honored to get such a thoughtful gift! Thanks, Rod!

We just finished one of our best shows of the year at the Portland Expo Center for the Northwest Sportsmans Show! It as off-the-charts! Solid wall-to-wall people for 5 days and we saw soooo many of our amigos who came to visit us at the booth! We had a blast and thank you for all of you who were so thoughtful to bring goodies and gifts. You’re the best. And a special shout-out to everyone who booked their 2015 La Paz fishing vacations as well!

We now head on down the road to our next stops Only this time, we do something different. Because of scheduling, Jill and I will split up!

We don’t see many of these, but take a look at the China Mero (Hawkfish) caught by Jeff Burnham. These are tasty fish we occasionally catch around rocky areas.

Jeff Burnham poses with another beautiful sierra. These fish are great eating and tough fighters but during the winter cooler months, they hang out around ridges and beach drop offs near shallow water.

ANOTHER CRAZY WINDY AND RAINY WEEK!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Jan. 25 – Feb. 1, 2015

Not a whole lot to report this past week. We had some crazy days of rain and drizzle and when it wasn’t wet, it was windy either on the front or backside of the storm cells that came through. It didn’t rain hard, but definitely, not great to be outside trying to get a tan. We normally have windy days during this time of year and it’s unusual for us to get rain, but nothing is “for sure” when it comes to weather.

The good side is that we don’t have alot of anglers this time of year and those that do, usually are not hardcore and wanting to fish every day. So, with flexible schedules we can ask them to wait until perhaps another day later in the week is better. That being said, we got some OK inshore action on sierra, bonito and jack crevalle. Not much in the way of bait but have been using baby bonito when we can get them.

We have been keeping an eye on what the commercial guys are doing since they are working any chance they can get out, unlike sports fishing. These guys gotta make a living. They tell me there’s yellowtail at the island and there’s also sardines and mackerel for bait.

The forecast for the coming week is looking pretty good. Nothing but sunshine mostly. Back to normal! It’s gonna be 75 to 80 degrees in the daytime and mid-50’s at night!

Whales are in full “come see us” mode out at Bahia Magdalena and we’re running daily whale watching trips right now.

PORTLAND SPORTMAN’S EXPO COMING UP THIS WEEK!

La Paz in the house. All the way up in Washington, Jeanne and Jeff Brown who own Big Left Turn Yacht Managment in La Paz and were up for the Seattle Boat Show. They stopped in at the Seattle Fairgrounds to say hi. Great to see them. Tom is La Paz’s biggest Seahawks fan at our Tailhunter Restaurant!

She’s one of the best! Donna Thompson gets our first yellowtail of the season putting the wood to two nice yellowtail off Cerralvo Island with live bait.

Two more of our super amigos…from Bakersfield, California…Ken Gragg and Carl Lange put a handful of pargo and a cabrila in the boat fishing just outside of Bahia de los Muertos. These are tough fish to pull out’ve the rocks!

Captain Jorge and Richard Branson from Virgin Airlines? Nope…it’s our amigo, Rick Kasper who actually has been a double for Branson, but as an actor and host of his own outdoor TV show has also been a double for Gary Bussey. He’s also a fun fisherman! He’s showing off a dorado and a sierra here although they let a few get away!

YELLOWTAIL AND PARGO MAKE A SHOWING…SO DOES DRIZZLE AND RAIN!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Jan. 18-25, 2015

The week started on some real high notes. Not only did we have some really fishing-condusive weather, but the fish decided to join in as well. However, as the week progressed, by the end of the week, not only did winter winds return, but we also got the surprise of rain which dampened things a bit. Fortunately, being the off-season, we didn’t have to cancel anyone’s fishing trips as they weren’t many folks fishing this week anyway.

However, let’s talk about fishing. The best news is that we finally got into yellowtail. The big fork tail jacks really laid low last year when El Nino conditions warmed the waters and made bait and the big fish a rarity. However, this week we took some nice quality-grade yellows around Cerralvo Island near the high spots both north and south ends with bait and iron with fish going 20-30 pounds. Some hefty hamachi! Hopefully, this is just the start of things to come.

The yellowtail require the cooler waters and normally, we don’t see many until about February or March. They stick around until about May when the waters start warming and we see the warm water species like dorado, billfish and wahoo move in. We barely had any yellowtail to speak of at all last year. We’re hopeful that the yellowtail we saw this week are the vanguard of a nice yellowtail season.

Another fish we really didn’t see last year were the pargo…the big snapper that come up in the springtime just like the yellowtail. These big red/ copper fish are powerful and in the spring come into the shallows to spawn. One of the most vicious fish to tangle with and a real frustrating game fish to put in the boat because of their power and the rock cover they love, we got a few of those this week as well. Most of the big ones get lost because they’re just rugged sluggers, but early in the week some 3-8 pounders came up (a good sized one is 15…a brute is 40!) so, like the yellowtail maybe this year we’ll get them back.

In addition to the yellowtail and the pargo, there were some dorado and sierra taken plus cabrilla.

Then, the wind came back up again from the north and as the weekend approached, skies got cloudy and a few days of rain hit us. As I’m writing this, we’re still looking at rain then it will let up next week and the forecast calls for some rain late in the week again as the month ends.

WHALES WATCHING ON BAHIA MAGDALENA GOING FULL

If you want to really do one of those “once-in-a-lifetime” things or check something off your “bucket list” our Bahia Magdalena Whale Watching is in full swing. The grey whales have come down from the Bering Sea in the longest migration of any animal on the planet. They showed up a bit early this year and we’re running daily trips to see them. They usually stay around until about mid-March and the bay is where they come to mate, give birth and basically hang out in the warm calm waters where we can get up close to them in their natural environment. After shows in Sacramento and Denver and about 3,000 miles of driving, this was our third show of the year and it was a great time. We now have a few days to catch up and re-group then hit our next show in Portland at the Portland Expo Center from Feb. 4th to 8th. Barred pargo and cabrilla (Mexican seabass) like these two nice fish taken by the Montejano Brothers (Andy and Raphael) have been biting nicely inshore lately. Typical action for this time of year and tough to get outta the rocks. But GREAT eating!

Some fat sierra and schoolie dorado are were not uncommon this week. No roosterfish to show you because all the roosters were released!

The grey whales have arrived earlier than normal and are already in good numbers at Bahia Magdalena and we’re already running day trips to get on the water with them!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Jan. 11-18, 2015

There weren’t that many fishermen around this week, either because there simply weren’t that many around or those that wanted to fish were kept off the water by pesky northern winds. But, this is typical of winter fishing in our area and frankly, it’s pretty common few weeks after Christmas not to have even many tourists in town. You could almost call La Paz “sleepy.” Even the locals are keeping it low key and under the radar, perhaps still recovering from the holidays. Stores, streets and restaurants are almost empty sometimes!

We did get a few folks out on the water with air temps in the mid-70’s and a bit choppy. Sierra were biting along the drop-off points where shallow water slopes into deeper areas like near the Las Arenas lighthouse and also in the channel areas where current move between rocky spot. As well, the sloping areas also produced jack crevalle and some pompano…both related plus their more popular cousin the rooster fish with some smaller school-sized fish that might have gone about 15 pounds.

Bonito were prevailant not to far from shore either and a few stray free-swimming dorado were hooked as well.

WHALES HAVE SHOWN UP EARLY IN BAHIA MAGDALENA!

Normally, from about late January to late March, the grey whales take up residence at Bahia Magdalena where they spawn, breed and give birth. In these shallow warm waters, this is the end of the largest migration of mammals on earth as they come down from the Bering Sea near Alaska. We’ve started running daily trips to the Bay to spend a day getting close to these amazing gentle animals and it’s a great life-time experience for the whole family. In our booth at the Denver ISE show and a special shout-out to Kelly and Diego Jimenez, our amigos from Loveland, Colorado. Kelly made this incredible wreath for us out’ve shells and other items collected from the beaches around Las Arenas. Kelly and Diego are making their 3rd trip in a row to us this year!

From one of our favorite cities…DENVER…we just had an incredible time at the International Sportsman’s Expo at the Convention Center downtown. 2015 TAILHUNTER/ WESTERN OUTDOOR NEWS PANGA SLAM & JACKPOT IS FILLING!

Captain Jorge and Verda Boyd started off the first day of last year’s Panga Slam with a nice bull dorado taken just off the area of La Ventana.

Tim Farrell took a photo of a trophy rooster fishing with Captain Archangel during last year’s Panga Slam. Tim caught several nice fish and released the all!

We just announced the dates for our 2015 Panga Slam two weeks ago nd the response was incredible! Still some spots available. La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of January 4-11, 2015

The New Year is off to a good start! We had some nicer days on the water this week. Some breezy days, but overall, some good days to be on the water, all things considered. It’s just a nice time to be in town. Sunshine and 75 degree days and 60 degree nights and not many tourists in town almost make it a “sleepy seaside city.” It’s really one of my favorite times in Baja.

For the fishing, there were some surprises. We got the usual winter-fare of inshore specials including some pargo liso…running about 5-10 pounds. Cabrilla in the 3-4 pound class. Some surprisingly large sierra this year up to about 5 pounds and some good fun with 4-6 pound bonito.

However, surprisingly, we had some appearances of some species we normally don’t see this early in the year. For one, we had a few of our anglers tie into some pre-season rooster fish! Normally, we don’t see roosters until maybe late February or March so these were a nice bonus. The fish ran about 10-20 pounds and were taken around the Las Arenas lighthouse and Bahia de Los Muertos.

The other surprise was the showing of small school-sized dorado. Perhaps 10 pounders, but great eating and again, we don’t usually see them in May so perhaps this is a sign of some early mahi moving into the area.

By the way, word has it that our scouts are already seeing gray whales over at Bahia Magdalena! It seems they’re coming a tad early as well. This is a great opportunity to get about as close to one of these wonderful huge animals as humanly possible without getting into the water! We’ll be running trips until about late February or Mid-March when the whales start swimming north again But for now, this is the time when the whales arrive after the longest and largest migration of any animal on Earth all the way from the Bering Sea to spend time mating and birthing in the warm lagoons of the western Coast of Baja. TAILHUNTER ON IT’S WAY TO DENVER

We just wrapped up the first of our road shows with an explosively great fun 4 days at the California State Fairgrounds for the Sacramento ISE show! With over 650 vendors it was the largest fishing and hunting exhibit in the history of the Sacramento ISE and IT WAS PACKED! Thanks to all our amigos who came out to see us and say hi and to also set up their La Paz fishing adventure with us. We had a great time and also a big thank you to everyone who brought us so many goodies…everything from sushi to Chinese pork buns…wine…See’s candy…homemade cookies…homemade cheesecake…homemade carmel corn…gourmet chocolate…cheese…bread…pastries…champagne…you’re the best. Also a special shout-out to the Tim Campbell family (Better known as the TIM and PAULA BUTTERWORTH FAMILY…I screwed up dangit!) who put together a little ice chest travel pack for us on the road filled with gourmet cheese…baguettes…marinated mushrooms…candies…seafood spread…wine and more! We were well stocked for our journeys!

But now…here we go again. We hit the road and are now on our way to Denver. We’ll be at the Denver Convention Center from Thursday to Sunday this week. A sample of the mix we’re getting right now which is interesting. Dorado, which are warm water fish, mixed with sierra (including some big ones!) which are cold water fish!

NOT MANY ANGLERS AROUND FOR MIXED BAG OF FISH

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of December 14-21, 2014

I think this is the slow-down before the holidays. I think the whole city is just in “mellow Christmas mode” right now. Everyone is excited about Christmas, but it’s just very “tranquil” (peaceful) right now. I think every place is like that right now no matter where you live…unless you’re hitting a shopping mall in the U.S.

Here in Mexico, Christmas season started well before the U.S. Thanksgiving. There’s no Thanksgiving holiday in Mexico so right about Halloween / All Souls Day/ Dia de Los Muertos stores start selling decorations, toys, etc. And people start buying and decorating and getting ready two months ahead of time. Homes have been decorated for weeks. Christmas trees have been up since the end of November (which means the live ones can be pretty dry by now!). Packages have been under the trees for weeks also.

If you’re just headed out to buy toys or decorations now, you’re pretty much out-of-luck! There’s not much to buy. I had trouble finding a string of white lights last week for some that burned out already at the Tailhunter Restaurant! I had to go to 5 stores to find any Christmas lights!

Anyway, not many visitors around either. Next week folks will come in for vacation, but many of them are snow-birds or folks just coming in for the holidays. Not many anglers around! It would be a good time to be on the water since there’s no pressure on the fish at all!

We only had a few anglers ourselves. The only ones out there, for the most part, are the commercial guys.

It was a little windy here and there and kinda bouncy and rough a few days, but that’s typical this time of year. As I’ve mentioned often, we are only fishing with our fleet at Las Arenas/ Bahia de Los Muertos because it’s calmer there and the fish are closer and there’s more variety. With our La Paz fleet, it’s just too rough many days and a long bumpy ride to the fishing grounds for erratic fishing.

But, at Muertos and around Cerralvo, we’re still getting a few dorado up to about 15 pounds. Nothing big, but decent action. There’s still a few roosters around to about 20 pounds. Mostly school-sized fish although someone did latch onto a fish estimated at double that size. They never saw the fish, but it was hooked right there in the “rooster zone” near the Arenas light house and slammed into the bait like a big rooster. The clients had never caught a rooster before and kinda fumbled around and lost the fish! Oh well. Everyone had a laugh.

There are still some great inshore stuff too. Sierra are becoming more abundant as the waters get cold and in the rocks, we got some decent cabrilla and small pargo.

Tracey and Brian Campbell tags small dorado 12-14

Tracey and Brian Campbell were originally supposed to visit us last September, but Hurricane Odile got in the way . They were able to visit us this past week and get in some scuba diving, snorkeling and even a few days of fishing. Day one produced some nice dorado for taking back to Maryland and for dinner at Tailhunter Restaurant!

Carlos Cota just went out for an hour. That’s all the time he had. We went just past the point in about 30 feet of water to catch a few snapper for dinner and ended up with this striped marlin instead. Just shows some of the crazy variety right now. They weren’t able to release the billfish.

Captain Jorge and Yolanda Wheeler, our amiga from Las Vegas got some HUGE sierra not too far offshore from Bahia de Los Muertos.

CRAZY MIX OF FISH STILL HAPPENING BUT COOLER CONDITIONS ARRIVE

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Dec. 7-14, 2014

This past week was much more characteristic of December fishing. We had a little wind. A little breeze, especially late in the day. Waters are turning cooler and so is the air temp, but the sun has been out all week and it’s a pleasant time to be in town. Not many folks are in town now so you have the waters and the town pretty much to yourselves.

For the fishing, it seemed like it was different from day-to-day and panga to panga. All of our fishing right now, is pretty much with our Las Arenas fleet, because the waters out of La Paz are more subject to the rougher waters and also greener waters not conducive to very good fishing.

But, for the bite, we’re still getting some nice wahoo…some billfish…and dorado. Plus rooster fish seem to pop up ever few days as well. The problem now is that it’s not consistent. I tell folks there’s a big difference every day. If the blue water fish aren’t biting then the inshore fish like sierra, pargo and cabrilla be come the target or, if the waters are bouncy or rough, there’s just no way to go too far out and you’re relegated to staying closer inshore fishing structure fish like the species mentioned.

The rub is that it’s hard to tell which fish will bite when. We do keep an eye on the winds and generally speaking if the winds are blowing from the north, then we’re gonna be fishing inshore and there’s not too much chance of blue water species. However, that being said, we DID hook a striped marlin this week less than 50 yards from shore in only about 30 feet of water and some of the dorado we hooked this week were close to shore as well!
