La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Dec. 28, 2014 to Jan. 4, 2015

Happy New Year Everyone! Hope the new year is off to a good start for you!

We had another windy week here in La Paz, but about Wednesday it started to calm down and suddenly everyone wanted to go fishing! We put out more pangas in one day than we had in the two previous weeks combined! I guess everyone was waiting for those pesky north winds to settle down.

Anyway, we sure got quite a variety of fish. Nothing big, but for so many of our fishermen who are really in town for some sunshine and not necessarily hardcore anglers, there was some great action and fish to bring back for dinner. There’s alot of out-of-towners in La Paz right now for the holidays who are just trying to squeeze in an activity like snorkeling or diving or a day of fishing here-and-there.

So, for those who went out, we had cabrilla (sea bass) around 2-5 pounds. Smaller snapper and pargo of about the same size. Some really nice-sized sierra and some great bonito to bend the rods. Additionally, we had some surprise fish as well with some rooster fish caught and released that were going about 10-15 pounds; a few school-sized dorado; and even had a wahoo take down a lure, but regretfully come unbuckled. Oh well…

Still, great action and lots of fun without having to go out too far from shore or get bounced around out there in rough water. As the weekend came up the winds ramped up a bit and so did the fishing, but as you’re probably reading this, the winds have likely petered out and the seas are flat again. It’s going to be like this throughout the winter months which is pretty typical. It’s definitely chillier. I know many people will laugh, but our guys were complaining about the “cold water” which is now at 72 degrees!

The Tailhunter van has left the station and Jill and I are on the road and will be at the first of our “road shows” this week and for the next three months! First stop will be the International Sportsmans Expo at the California State Fairgrounds in Sacramento! This is a huge show and will run from Thursday to Sunday (January 8-11th). Our booth is in it’s usual place in the main hall.

Mid-week, we got slammed by some incredible winds. Guts up to 50-70 mph ripped into the area and our normally placid seas turned into a cauldron we rarely see. Check out the waves hitting the breakwater at Las Cruces north of La Paz. That’s Cerralvo Island in the background.

New York in the house. The day after the winds finally left us, we were able to find some dorado with some big boys mixed with school-sized fish. Captain Jorge poses with Doug Duval, Judie Pierce and Bill Harvey all from New York on the beach at Bahia de los Muertos.

DORADO BITE SANDWICHES BIG WINDS ROARING IN MID-WEEK

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Nov. 23-30, 2014

What a freakish week we had here in La Paz. This is the time of year when things transition from warmer conditions to cooler conditions. With it, we start to get more and more windy days with winds whipping from the north.

Well, lately, we’ve had more “breezy days.” That’s normal. It’s expected. I never expected what we had this week!

They talk about winter roaring in like a lion. Well, it didn’t just roar. It tore in like a freight train! Tuesday to Thursday, wind of 30-50 mph generated huge waves and gust up to 70 mph had the port captain closing down the port and keep folks off the water It was pretty incredible to watch…from the shore! Definitely NOT a good time to try to be on the water!

Huge waves crashed against beaches and against the concrete sidewalks of the waterfront Malecon throwing giant plumes of spray and water as far as parked cars across the street. Strolling pedestrians were sent scampering each time a wave crashed in much the same way that kids run through sprinklers in the summer except one could get seriously soaked by the giant swell. Even within the bay, it was uncharacterically white-capped and foaming. Many folks just parked themselves on the shore or in a nearby restaurant or bar to watch the display!

Then, on Friday, it pretty much disappeared!

And out we went fishing again. Just like before the storm, the dorado bit pretty readily with fish in the 20-30 pound class not uncommon but decent numbers of 10-15 pound fish as well. Some rooster fish and pargo were also hooked. The biggest issue was that those ripping winds really tore up the water and turned things over. For our guys who went out’ve La Paz, all the found was green and brown dirty water. The better fishing was from Las Arenas where the area was a bit more protected from the winds although waters were still not optimal. But at least we found fish!

Really hard to get a read on things. Not many folks in town or many fishermen as Thanksgiving week isn’t a big week here in La Paz for tourism. But, still a nice time to spend onshore as the sun was still comfortably warm. We’ll get a run of folks in between now and Christmas, but this week, was just nice to spend onshore and watching Mother Nature do her thing!

Kris Honkola from San Rafael CA was a first-time visitor with Tailhunter and set out to get a wahoo with us. On his very first day he tagged up this big-headed speedster south of Cerralvo Island.

Cathy Corda, here with husband Craig, had a pretty fantastic day. Not only did they get into the dorado school big-time, but Cathy got her first wahoo. What makes it more remarkable is that the fish bent out the hook and when they got it aboard…THE FISH WAS NOT HOOKED! The line made a half-hitch loop around the tail and had lassoed the fish! Great story!

Our long-time amigos from the San Francisco Bay area, Bill Lee and John McLucas had a week’s-worth of good fishing with our Las Arenas fleet. Here’s a sample of dorado, cabrilla and a rainbow runner.

It was a pretty good week for billfish…marlin and sailfish with a remarkable number of hookups! Most caught fish were released. Alexa Kadota took these spectacular photos right close to shore as her dad’s sailfish fought close to the panga.

Our new amiga from Utah, Janie Edge and her husband, Randy were fishing with Captain Victor and did pretty good on some schoolie dorado.

Nothing like a vacation with dad and getting pulled outta school! John Rogers from San Ramon, CA, took his boys, Jared and Jay out for a few days fishing with us and show off some of their dorado they caught north of La Paz around Espirito Santo Island.

These two brothers had to be some of the funniest guys all week…Andy and Rafi Montejano pose with a big pargo and cabrilla which we saw more of this week as the weather and conditions change.

You can tell waters are getting a little cooler because we don’t normally get pompano except in the springtime. However, our amigo John Ehlers from the Denver CO area, got this tasty pompano just off Bahia de los Muertos with Captain Pancho.

SEASONS CHANGING AND GETTNG COOLER BRINGING DIFFERENT FISH VARIETY:

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Oct. 20-27, 2014

We could not be asking for better conditions right now these last two weeks or so. Air temperatures have dropped significantly down to the low to mid-90’s. The humidity is gone so it’s just great sunshine. Water temps are still in the mid-80’s. And, although winds seem to be gradually increasing, there’s just a hint of perfect breeze each day. Barely a cloud in the sky. Nights are ideal and in the 70’s. If you’re walking around La Paz, it’s like being in a post card.

Basically, I think it means conditions are changing. They’re moving from the warmer summer days now tapering into our late fall bite.

Fishing has been OK to good for the most part. Not spectacular, but there were some nice highlights. I think we’re in transition now for the seasons. However, for most anglers fishing a few days, everyone is getting fish. There’s some nice highlights and bonus, and some days when the dorado go crazy but then there’s others when the bite drops off and gets a little more picky. Like I said, things are transitioning.

Dorado are still our mainstay with fish in the 10-20 pound class mostly. Some larger. Quite few smaller. Great fun on light tackle. Most of the larger fish have been lost, but we have seen some in the 40 pound category come and go…and keep going! But, dorado make up about 70% of our bite. But the fish seem more scattered and wide-ranging. There are still some concentrated schools, but they seem to be breaking up and moving quite a bit. One day we find the spots and other days it’s hunt-and-peck. It changes almost daily.

However, that’s been rounded out with a pretty nice bite on billfish. Striped marlin are around as well as blue and black marlin. But, the big surprise have been the number of sailfish around. We had some days when there were multiple hook-ups on our pangas. One day one of our pangas hooked 4 and were able to release 3. Another released 2. Several others released 1’s and 2’s and numerous other billfish have been seen feeding on bait or in the middle of the bonito and dorado schools. We had two large blue marlin hooked and dropped during the week.

The variety this time of year has been increasing as well. In addition to the billfish and dorado, wahoo keep popping up near Espirito Santo Island and inshore, we’re getting more pargo, cabrilla, red snapper, and even some sierra which is a sure indication that waters are cooling a bit. Additionally, we’re getting rainbow runners, lots of bonito, jack crevalle and still finding some school-sized rooster fish along the beaches. Not alot of big fish, but … Lots of great action!

FINALLY! Look what popped up! After seeing “signs” of tuna ever since the hurricane, we finally got a few and hopefully, these are the vanguard for a building bite! Standing on the beach at Muertos, Louie Sanchez from Denver and Don Goss from Los Angeles, jumped numerous hurdles to get to La Paz even after the hurricane! First tuna of the season!

Dorado like the one here with Mike Jennings have been rolling through in solid numbers, especially west of Cerralvo Island where easy limits have not been unusual!

The billfish have been restless since the storm and we had several days this past week where almost every one of our pangas hooked at least one sailfish. Most were released.

Geri Cammack with the kind of dorado that have been producing north of La Paz this past week. Except for this past weekend, weather has been some of the best of the season!

GETTING BACK ON TRACK!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Sept. 28-Oct. 5, 2014

For the last three weeks since Hurricane Odile, we’ve honestly had some of the best weather and condtions of the year! Blue skies…calm warm waters…very little wind. Just enough breeze to keep it comfortable.

But, as I’m writing this, we’re looking at Tropical Storm Simon that promises to drop a little rain on us for the next 4 days (Saturday to Monday) Doesn’t look like too much. Just enough to get us wet and hit us with some afternoon thunder and lightning. However, given how much we’ve already gotten hit in this El Nino year, I was kinda hoping that “enough-was-enough.”

Here in La Paz, and surely in many other places in southern Baja, especially the closer you get to Cabo, there’s alot of folks who lost their homes or they were heavily damaged. So, even a “little rain” only adds more misery to a situation that was under recovery.

By any stretch of the imagination, the recovery has been remarkable. The government and local authorities both public and private pulled out all the stops to get folks back on the grid as soon as possible. Much of the work has been done in record time although there are some folks only now getting back with power and water. But this is far ahead of predictions.

Most notably, the Cabo Airport which had been forecast as taking months to re-open, is now open as of Oct. 3rd with flights slowly starting to trickle in. Hotels and other tourist attractions are also making great strides.

As for the fishing, the great weather and conditions predicated some very good fishing these last few weeks. You could not have asked for better air and water! The only problem was that there weren’t many fishermen in town as there had been scores of cancelations, especially since there were no flights.

However, for those who were able to get on the water, dorado were most cooperative. These fish had not seen any traffic or pressure now for 3 weeks! They are hungry! Several days limits were easy and the anglers were catching and releasing fish as fast as they could go! On two days, our guys came back happily by noon with full fish boxes and “more than enough action for the day!”

Most of the fish were 10-15 pounds, but others in the 20-25 pound class were also found. Additionally, marlin and sailfish hooks-ups were also recorded. There’s an abundance of bonito out there so no shortage of action on light tackle. And, we also hooked a few wahoo around Cerralvo Island.

Maybe the most exciting ripple of news…Commercial guys got a few tuna that hit and moved off! Then, right at the end of the week, we hit a few football tuna ourselves. The biggest problem was getting through the voracious schools of bonito, but there are tuna signs everywhere. Several private boats as well as commercial guys report tuna in the 100 pound class coming through the areas and some of our diver friends reported diving and having schools of tuna flash through! This could be good! Standing by!

Two weeks ago, we were ankle deep and surveying the damage the morning after Odile struck La Paz. Fallen trees…broekn windows…shattered glass everywhere. It had been a long and sleepless night. The start of many to follow. The hotel has made a remarkable recovery!

LA PAZ…AIRLINES…FISHING BACK ON TRACK!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Sept. 21-28, 2014

Two weeks ago, we were standing in the water surveying the rubble and destruction for the biggest hurricane ever to hit Baja. Two weeks later…WE’RE ON THE COMEBACK! We’re digging out with remarkable speed!

Frankly, there hasn’t been alot of fishing going on since the hurricane. All the tourists have pretty much been evacuated or, there’s no way to fly in, or hotels have been damaged or without services so trips have been canceled. Local residents or expats aren’t fishing either as everyone struggles to get back on keel with larger things to worry about like food, water, gas and their homes and jobs.

However, we’ve had a few boats out here and there. Weather has still been erratic. Nothing bad, but there have been some lingering intermittent rain cells that have moved through the area that has also kept us off the water or winds strong enough where it was better just not to put out any boats.

As might be expected, the further we get away from the hurricane, the better the water conditions. Given that we just had the biggest hurricane in Baja history, it’s not surprising that the waters were very overturned dirty and green. Lots of debris in the water too.

The first few days, there were a few small dorado around. Some sierra and bonito as well.

Within a few days, we were seeing more dorado, but they seemed interested, but wary. Very hesitant to take a bait or lure.

By the end of this week, the fish were back on the chew. We had limits or near limits of dorado including some nice bulls in the 20-30 pound class as well as bonito, cabrilla, jack crevalle and a few small rooster fish.

For everyone who sent well wishes and support phone calls and e-mails, we much appreciated it. We’re digging out and like everyone else, trying to manage and pull back together. The storm has been pretty devastating. On many levels.

The La Paz Airport is back in operation. Tourists are gone, but the hotels are jammed full with more than 20,000 escapees from Cabo San Lucas.

All our pangas and captains are well. We pulled the pangas out’ve the water before the storm hit. The La Paz captains did better than our Las Arenas captains. At Las Arenas, many in the area are will without water, power, electricity or phones. Compound that with the tremendous loss of work with all the cancelations. The loss of work is a big hit for everyone.

Generally, here in La Paz, most areas have water and power and phones again. But many of the outlying areas are still lacking services two weeks after the storm. Of course, many of those who had the least, lost the most and have the hardest time making the comeback. In Cabo, they have approximately only 15% back on the grid, but the improvement is remarkable given initial estimates. As mentioned above, the airport will start getting flights this week. Many hotels are opening albeit on a limited basis. But again, the most underprivileged areas were hit the hardest and will take the longest to recover.

Many have asked for ways to help. Thanks for the generous hearts. If you’re coming down, ANYTHING is welcome. Many people lost everything. All ages. All areas. Clothes…school supplies…medical supplies…anything is appreciated and needed. If you’re not coming down, there are still ways to help:

This is the best mustache of the week! Don Slaiman and Captain Pancho from our Tailhunter Las Arenas fleet bust out the big smiles with two nice bull dorado on the beach.

Chris Chang owns an organic nursery in Canada and had never fished in Mexico before, but fishing with Tailhunters got plenty of dorado and, on his last day, a huge 300 pound blue marlin north of La Paz that he fought on a Penn 6/0 reel with 60 pound test and put in the boat in only about an hour. The gut hooked fish inhaled the green and orange lure all the way down it’s gullet. He was fishing with popular Captain Rogelio “Jolly Roger” Camacho.

There’s a zillion good things going on in this photo of Tyler Emard from Fullerton CA. Fishing with Captain Rogelio from our Taihunter La Paz fleet, Tyler fought this dorado…his first and biggest…for 20 minutes on light tackle…no belt…all arms and shoulders! He’s headed to the University of Arizona in a few weeks! Great colors on this photo!

The skies went from clear to this…as a wave or darkness hits the beach at Bahia de Los Muertos. There had been absolutely nothing on the advisories or radar about this. That’s why they are called “toritos.” (little bulls). These storms come out of nowhere with thunder, lightning, wind and rain and it’s almost like a baby hurricane. Ominous. The pangas had to scramble back to the beach for cover.

Seven minutes after the first photo, here’s what the beach looked like at Bahia de Los Muertos…a malestrom! Thirty minutes later, the sun was out…

Las Arenas provided some good action this week for Tailhunter clients including Steve Holguin from Los Angeles and his son, Marcos who is attending college in New York as the pair show off a set of dorado standing on the beach at Bahia de los Muertos with Captain Jorge of the Tailhunter fleet.

Susie Waters had never fished La Paz or ocean-fished before, but broke into it big time with a couple of days on the water with our Tailhunter La Paz fleet. This is just a super photo of her hanging the fish all by herself with big smiles.

Long Beach fishing veteran, Zach Linden, raced down for a last-minute trip this week and a couple of days of fishing. The fish gods smiled and Zach did some great action on ultralight tackle including this pair of La Paz dorado.

Rebecca Kendrick got into the thick of the dorado action with this nice bull mahi fishing with Captain Alfredo and deckie Blas. She had always wanted to fish Mexico and salt water and had a great first experience with a number of nice fish over several days of fishing.

It’s got a little sand on the forehead, but a great photo of Peter Knapp and Captain Pancho on the beach at Las Arenas with this nice-sized bull.

Grant Stark and Levi Fadoul put the wood to this thick bull dorado fishing north of La Paz last week. These two guys had too much fun all week. Always seemed to be cracking up!

UNPREDICTABLE EL NINO CONDITIONS AFFECT FISHING BUT DORADO DO THEIR BEST

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of July 20-27, 2014

With the exception of another of those surprise “torito” (little bull) storms that popped up on Thursday, it was a pretty good week of fishing for the most part.

This time of year, waters are extremely warm…actually, warmer than usual…as a result of the “el nino” situation. This has given rise to rapidly forming storms that are not shown on weather advisories in the morning. However, out of seemingly clear skies, huge thunderheads suddenly build and the skies grow dark within minutes. Winds start whipping and wave emerge from calm seas turning the ocean into churning froth. Wind-driven rain doesn’t fall so much as it shoots sideways from the gusts. It’s time to get the heck off the water!

Several weeks ago, one of these storms turned into a huge waterspout between Cerralvo Island and El Sargento and Las Arenas. We didn’t quite get that this week, but in the span of about 10 minutes clear skies went dark and the oceans got treacherous. The pangas had barely been on the water, but found themselves racing back to the beach made more perilous by waves now pounding the sands where the pangas had to land. Lighting strikes illuminated everyone scrambling around for shelter. Cell phone and electrical power gets cut off.

As the rains hit and everyone hunkers down….that’s pretty much all you can do. There’s a reason they call these “little bulls.” Within an hour or two…sometimes in the span of minutes…it’s over. The sun blazes back out. The winds turn off. The skies go clear and flat. Except for puddles of water, there’s no trace.

And that’s what happened Thursday morning.

But, the rest of the week was pretty grand!

LAS ARENAS

Fishing definitely improved over the week before. Again, dorado were center stage, but there were fewer punk 5 pound dorado and more respectable 10-20 pounders and all willing to charge pretty much water was in the water. Some boats did better than others, but then the next day the boat that did poorly would be the big boy boat. Consistently , ever panga we put on the water caught fish…or had opportunities to catch fish. One of the big problems is that the baits we have tend to be large. Hence, it takes longer than normal for the fish to really chomp the bait and get a hook down in their mouths. Anxious anglers would often tell me they pulled the trigger too soon before the dorado could eat and they would lose the hook-set and half-a-bait would come flying back to the boat…sans dorado!

LA PAZ

Still our most consistent area. Our La Paz boats rocked some really nice 20-40 pound fish this week as they have now since June. The fish extend right from La Paz Bay towards Espirito Santo Island then around the corner to about El Rosario/ Las Cruces where the larger bulls seem to have taken residence not too far from the beach. Co-incidentally, that’s where large schools of baitfish have been seen. We also got some roosterfish off the beaches.

The bigger news is the increased incidence of hookups with billfish including larger-than-normal sailfish and even some blue marlin. I don’t remember seeing so many hookups on blue marlin as I have the past two or three weeks. Most of the sails and marlin are getting released, but one fish that couldn’t be released was a hefty 300-pound blue.

El Nino effects keep coming. Days can start out with bright brilliant sunshine but by afternoon, the clouds roll in and we get tropical storms that can be pretty crazy. It can rain in one place and 100 yards away, it’s bone dry! And the rain can last 5 minutes of an hour. Then the sun comes blazing out. But, there’s some predictions of more afternoon rain this week.

Tom Worley cabrilla grande tags smalll 4-14-proc

Not bad for a first time out with us! From Evergreen, Colorado, Tom Worley pulled this trophy pig cabrilla (Mexican seabass) out’ve the rocks near Cerralvo Island. He was working a live bait early in the week.

Many of you know Esteban Romero, one of our favorite amigos and who drives for us. Even he got into the wahoo action with this speedster while trolling a Rapala outside of Bahia de Los Muertos near Cerralvo Island.

Another first-timer with us had an incredible two days of fishing getting and releasing his first roosterfish of about 40 pounds then sticking a wahoo and a dorado for the grand slam. McKell Condie was visiting us from Utah. Oh…and he also jumped in the water to swim with a whaleshark too!

Big smile and a two-handed batch of dorado for everyone’s amigo, Jorge Romero, who also took some time this week to check out the fishing. He got a total of 4 dorado for the day.

Always with a good day of fishing, Taylor Murphey, from Lakewood CA poses with a fresh colorful dorado she took fishing with grandpa Roger Thompson who kindly sent us the photo. That’s the beach near Muertos Bay in the background.

Amigo, Paul Nagata, from San Francisco, usually visits us several times a year and got away this week for a quick few days with his favorite captain Jorge. This particular day, Paul jumped all over the dorado, but the previous day he hooked a massive wahoo that straightened the hook near the south-end of Cerralvo Island.

These two guys cracked me up! Left is Bob Martz and on the right is Jordan McMasters from Victoria, Canada. They show off a few of their dorado on the beach, but Jordan also caught and released a 50 pound roosterfish.

From Mexico City, Carlos Westerman was able to get out one day with us at La Arenas and our Captain Archangel. The action wasn’t great, but he made the most of it and took this nice-sized wahoo and dorado.

FRUSTRATING FISHING BUT SOME NICE HIGHLIGHTS ON A TOUGH WEEK

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of April 27-May 4, 2014

It was somewhat of a frustrating week of fishing. It started well. It ended fairly well. But in between, it was a bit rugged.

We had some promise going into the week but then strong winds and some really high tidal surges and waves seemed to have not only stirred up the waters, but also chased away the bits of live bait spots we had as well as brought up cooler waters and some rougher waves. Not exactly the best conditions or situations for fishing. Just being honest.

There were some highlights, however. What we lacked in quantity and action we tended to make up for it in some nice quality fishing. There were some good-sized rooster fish taken that ran 30-60 pounds and some larger ones broken off. All of them released.

There were also some larger dorado in the area as well that helped out as well. Some of the pangas got limits or near limits some days. Not everyone, but several boats a day would do well. It just depended on the the spot as well as the luck and skill of the anglers.

But, truth be told, there were days this week when boats came back with nothing…either because of simple bad luck or losing fish or choosing to chase a fish that was “hot”one day, but cooled off the next. I especially felt badly for a pair of flyfishing anglers we had that fished hard and hardcore like troopers for the entire week and pretty much came up goose-egged. It wasn’t a good week for flyfishing…and tough for the conventional fishing as well. Despite some nice catches, it might have been one of the more frustrating weeks of the young season.

The highlight would had to have been the wahoo that went on the bite again. Every day, we took a few and lost even more to the speedy toothy fish. But, for many of our anglers, it was their first wahoo with some decent 20-35 pound ‘hoos brought into the boat. South end of Cerralvo Island was our hot spot trolling Rapala and YoZuri lures.

This is more like it for March fishing! Joe Arata of Pacifica CA strikes the hot pose with a slugger yellowtail he took on the iron off Cerralvo Island. Yellowtail were a bit more predominant this week.

What the heck! Roger Thompson is one of the best anglers we know. He was throwing the iron for yellowtail and said his jig barely hit the water when this big-time marlin smacked into it! On 40-pound test, he battled the big billfish for over an hour! Attempts to release the fish were not successful and the meat was donated. Marlin generally don’t show up for another 3 months or so! Just another indication that we’re going to see more warm water species showing up!

If there’s any question about the waters being warmer than usual, check out this crazy story from John Duteil who was visiting us from Canada:
We went to the beach at Tecolote and wow the fish were literally jumping out of the water. Two dorado came speeding right up to the shore, then started flipping around one made it back out to sea but the other was stuck. Our friend Dennis still eating his lunch walked over and picked him up. (Pics attached) moral of the story if you can catch them this easy on the shore imagine what you can do in a boat!! it is so easy to catch fish in La Paz they are literally jumping out of the water for you to catch!”

Best show of the season? Maybe so! Just finished up the mighty Fred Hall Fishing and Boating Show at the Long Beach Convention Center that went from Wednesday to Sunday! We hear it broke attendance records and the place was packed and the Tailhunter Booth never had a dull moment! Don Busse (far right) brought over his merry group to toast us with Jill leading the saludos at our booth! We saw a zillion friends and booked lots of fishing trips for 2014 to La Paz! Thanks, Long Beach! Thanks to everyone! No onto Salt Lake City!

CAN IT GET STRANGER? WATERS WARM AND BRING TOP WATER SPECIES!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of March 2-9, 2014

Amiga:

So sorry. Impossible to write anything from the show and then I’m up to 3 or 4 a.m. just catching up. It’s after midnight now Sunday. If you can still use it, here’s some info:

The strange week early season continued this past week with more un-characteristic biters all week, but especially early in the week. In what seems like we may have by-passed our cold-water season and got right into spring-like conditions, we continue to hook up with a crazy variety of fish indicative of waters that are unseasonably warm!

We did get a few more big yellowtail this week, but the numbers are way off from what they should be. Normally, this time of the year, we are hammering big 25-40 pound ‘tails and getting 2-5 per panga not counting the ones we lose!

Instead, we are only getting about 3 – 10 per week! That’s it. They are a nice grade of fish, but the counts are not what they should be.

However, don’t panic! The slack is being taken up by other fish including dorado, wahoo…even marlin and we got a tuna (reportedly a 24-pound class yellowfin was taken!) this week as well. All of these are normally warm water species that we don’t see for another 2 months or so!

Mixing that in with some cabrilla and pargo and it’s making for an interesting “chop suey” of fish in the fish box these days. Will it continue?

I have no idea. We seem to get new surprises every week! Two things can happen. The waters will continue to warm in which case, forget the cold water species like the yellowtail an sierra and such. They’ll go deep or leave the area far too early!

Secondarily, they water will suddenly get cool and cold and we’ll lose the warm water species and by then it might also be too drastic of a change for the inshore species.

I tend to think the waters will continue to warm so look out…it’s going to be a season of early big fish!

LONG BEACH ROCKED! NOW HEADED TO SALT LAKE ISE SHOW!

Our booth in Long Beach was visited by so many super amigos but we never expected so many dignitaries from La Paz to come up as well including our amigo Agustin Olachea, head of the La Paz hotel association! It was great to see him at the show helping to promote tourism in our city!

We had an incredible run this past week at the Fred Hall Fishing and Boating Show at the Long Beach Convention Center. What a slamming good time seeing so many of our S. Cal friends and so many of our amigos in the fishing industry. It was often shoulder-to-shoulder in the aisles and the din of the crowd was so raucous that we had to yell to be heard! Couldn’t have been more fun and I also got to celebrate my birthday in the middle of about 10,000 of my best friends like I do every year! Thanks to everyone who came by to chat about fishing in La Paz and also wish me another good “trip around the sun!” It was a grand time!

But now…

Here we come Salt Lake City! Two more shows to go and Salt Lake it ALWAYS fun! We’ll be at the Expo Center in Sandy, Utah to be specific in that fine facility from Thursday to Sunday. In 20 years running our operations in La Paz, I’ve not had anyone pull up a big broomtail grouper like this. Leif (“Don’t call me “Garrett”) Dover from Atlanta GA has been fishing at least 2 times a year for many years and always sticks fish with us. He said this fish slammed into his jig and almost pulled him out’ve the boat. This is not just a trophy fish, it’s also an unusual catch!

Fishermen come for years trying to stick a trophy wahoo. Don Asp came down on his first trip from Minnesota and rips this sweet ‘hoo! He’s just trying to catch some sunshine and get in a little fishing. Instead he gets on of the most prized fish in Baja. He’s on the beach at Bahia de Los Muertos. Lots of wahoo this week. Unbelievable.

Ken Gragg (left) is one of our best amigos who fishes with us at Tailhunter several times a year and came down this past week with his son, Steve. They found the schools of big pargo liso off the rocks near Las Arenas. Tough fish to put in the boat!

OK…this one turned out to be the biggest amberjack of the week…maybe the year! Look at this beast that Capt. Hugo hung! The amberjack is the delicious big cousin of the yellowtail. These are generally not caught in our waters until later in the spring! Amigo, Roger Thompson, was on the boat and took the photo. Thanks, Rog!

Shellee Mittan from northern California and her husband, Bill, only had time to squeeze in one day of fishing and got some cabrilla (released) and these two nice sierra.

We have missed our amigo, Daryl Valdez from Bakersfield CA who usually visits us every year, but hasn’t been down in a bit. Great to see him and he got the largest pargo of the week…this fish estimated at 20-25 pounds.

Nice forktail! Joe Arata from Pacifca CA dropped a blue and white iron overboard and stuck it to this fat yellowtail off Cerralvo Island. The yellowtail haven’t been as prevailant as normal as water temps and bait conditions have been variable.

THE MOST AMAZING CRAZY WINTER WEEK OF FISHING!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Feb. 23 to March , 2014

This might have been the craziest week of winter fishing we’ve seen in our many years here. Mainly, it’s because it wasn’t winter fishing! I’m not sure what to call it or what to say about it!

In all honesty, the fishing action was really only so-so. We had a good number of anglers out there and it wasn’t crazy wide-open by any stretch. And it was better earlier in the week than later when it seemed to taper off.

However, what it lacked in numbers was made up for in quality. Great quality. Unbelievable quality. Just look at the photos!

Now, normally this time of year, we’re chasing cold water inshore fish. Species like sea bass (cabrilla), pargo (snapper), jack crevalle, pompano, sierra and the like. If conditions are right, we’re also getting the big pig yellowtail as well.

Well, the last few weeks we started getting some really strange biters and I think it culminated this week. In fact, it was a great indescribable week relatively speaking.

We did find the pargo. Some big ones right off Punta Perrico. But, we also got…get this..(drumroll)….wahoo! Dorado! A 180-pound striped marlin! Amberjack! And even a huge broom tail grouper!

What’s going on?

Maybe it’s the water temps being a little warmer than normal. Maybe it’s the lack of mackerel that usually draw the yellowtail up from the trenches. But, I have never seen a winter like this where we’re getting these species. Sure, every now and then someone gets one, but to have all of these species biting at the same time? Literally unheard of!

But, the anglers sure stuck some fish. Bait was still an issue, but using ballyhoo and slow trolling Rapalas and also those guys who dropped yo yo iron did well. Hot spots were all around Cerralvo Island, around the north and south ends were especially good. But also around Punta Perico fish were found. We’ll just have to keep an eye on things!

BRING ON THE BIG SHOW – TAILHUNTER HEADS TO LONG BEACH FRED HALL SHOW

Thanks to all of our new and old amigos in Boise who came to see us at the Idaho Sportsmans Show! We were slammed and had the best show of our 2014 sports tour! Lots of reservations for fishing with us this year and we’re looking forward to all the visit!
But now…we head to the big boy show of shows…the FRED HALL FISHING and HUNTING SHOW at the Long Beach Convention Center starting this Wednesday to Sunday!

We can’t say enough about this past week show at the Idaho Sportsmans’ Show in Boise Idaho. Thanks to everyone! The show was packed and our Tailhunter booth was slammed. We had some of our best day of the 2014 tour this past week and booked lots of new reservations for fishing this year! Just spectacular!

And now….

We head to the grand-daddy of shows! The Fred Hall Fishing and Hunting Show starts Wednesday and goes through Sunday at the Long Beach Convention Center. This show is huge so bring your walking shoes! There’s tons to see for the whole family. It takes some folks several days to walk through all the displays; check out all the gear for sale; check out the seminars and make their way through the whole show. This is a huge party. If you’ve never attended it’s the Woodstock of fishing shows on the West Coast. Come see us. We’ll be in our booth in our usual place in the middle of tackle row, next to Izorline fishing line and Whopper Stopper fishing rods. This is gonna be fun!

Mark Martis visits La Paz several times a year and our amigo has been fishing with Tailhunter for well over a decade. He often surprises us with his great catches, but this surprise catch this past week with Captain Victor was this spectacular wahoo taken off Cerralvo Island. Officially our first wahoo of the season!

Seth Caillat got our first official Las Arenas yellowtail of the season. In fact he got two of the plus dorado using live ballyhoo out’ve Bahia de Los Muertos.

Whale watching season with the gray whales in Magdalena Bay is in full-swing right now with lots of whales in the shallow calm waters! Let us know if we can set up your whale watching trip for the experience of a lifetime! Whales usually hang out until the middle of March.

The Tailhunter Tour showed up for the Pacific Northwest Sportsmans Show this week in Portland Oregon and got slammed with a freak 4 day snow and ice storm that virtually froze everything in the city and shut down much of Portland. We still had a great show!

Like I said, we still had a spectacular show in Portland with lots of amigos visiting Jill and I including Matt, Tim and Phil who stopped to say hi and take a quick photo at our Tailhunter booth. Next stop…YAKIMA, Washington.

A WEEK OF SURPRISES FOR FISHING WEEK!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Feb. 2-9, 2014

I’m not sure how to describe the week. OK, we got some fish. Yes, it was a little breezy and yes, it was a little bumpy some day out there. But that’s typical of this time of year. In all honesty, we didn’t get ALOT of fish. So, best to be truthful.

However, that’s not what made the week remarkable.

What made it remarkable was the quality of the fish we got!

OK, we got a few cabrilla and some bonito and some sierra. Ho-hum. That’s about par for winter fishing right now. But, whereas we got those big pargo snapper last week and I thought we were going to go zipping into pargo season, the pargo didn’t show.

Instead, it was a week of FIRSTS!

…we got our first yellowtail of the season…some nice 25-pound fish. These fish ate some slow trolled big Rapalas as well as slow-trolled ballyhoo that caused the fish to blow up. Secondly, we also got…(hold on…drumroll…) WAHOO!!! Yup. Wahoo, in winter at the south end of Cerralvo Island. Our first wahoo of the season!

On top of that we got dorado still biting. Dorado are SUMMER fish! What’s up with that? I have a feeling this could be a wacky start to the season. Every week, we’re running into something different. That just makes it fun.

TAILHUNTER TOUR LEAVES PORTLAND SHOW AND MOVES TO YAKIMA WASHINGTON!

It was an incredible crazy snow-filled week in Portland as a freaky 4-day snowstorm pretty much shut down the city! We still had a great time and booked lots of La Paz fishing trips and saw lots of our amigos!

Our 3-month Tailhunter Road Tour says adios to one of our favorite cities in Portland, Oregon where we had a crazy week of an unusual snow and ice storm that pretty much froze the city…and us! But, we had a great show and now move onto the CENTRAL WASHINGTON SPORTSMEN SHOW in YAKIMA, WASHINGTON! The show is a fun 3-day event from Friday to Sunday, Feb. 14-16th. Come say his and let’s talk about visiting us in La Paz this year…where it’s WARM!
