Wow! Our Captain Armando holds the pointy-end of a big fat wahoo that Gary Tsunoda of Las Vegas popped just outside of Bahia de Los Muertos. Our amigo, Gary, had a great week of fishing with a number of species and some awesome trophys ,but this one was a gem! Good week for wahoo…and some were very very close to shore!

Our best week of the year for roosterfish! Some days our anglers got 3-6 roosterfish each panga an many were very close to shore and not too far from the beach. Bait worked best, but even our flyfishers got them as well with almost all the fish, like this one from Jorge Romero headed back to live, grow and fight another day!

You’re probably not gonna see too many pretty wahoo with such perfect coloring as this one caught by our amigo, Tom Brown, who owns Big Left Turn Yacht Management here in La Paz. Boy, did he have a good day that started right off the bat with this awesome yahoo that literally looks like it came from being airbrushed! They also caught giant pompano, dorado and a huge sierra. Captain Pancho gets in on the photo. Great shot!

Lots of the fish that Tom and his buddy, Tim, caught went towards a big fish party they held for 13 amigos that same night at our Tailhunter Restaurant that included, ceviche, Hawaiian marinated poke, battered fish tacos and mahi mahi en chile poblano sauce!

Nothing better than fish that was swimming in the morning and dinner at night! Tom’s dorado was prepared with our award-winning chile poblano sauce!

Whoaaa…lift that thing for the photo, Roger! Roger Thompson rocked it big time with this nice striper…a huge one this week. They tried to revive it insuccessfully, so they donated the meat to various families. Roger never gets skunked.

Love this photo! Flyfishers ALWAYS seem to know how to pose and take good photos. Tyler Lyon from Utah spent a few days with us and his flyrod doing great with his hand-tied flies. “I couldn’t keep the fish off of the fly! he told me! He got into several nice roosterfish like this one. He told me at one point, “I saw a school of 70-pounders go cruising by!” He released all fish.

Dave Henderson from the Los Gatos CA area was with us for his first La Paz fishing trip and put the wood to a nice wahoo on his 2nd day!

Yes! And dorado too! Captain Armando takes the photo op on the beach at Bahia de los Muertos with Gary and Lois Tsunoda, our Las Vegas amigos! It ended up as sashime at our Tailhunter Restaurant.

Wow! Now THAT’S a big pompano! It was a great week for pompano…cousins to the jack crevalle, roosterfish and yellowtail. They taste great and good runs of them come through about this time of year. But this one is like a pizza pie plate! Tim rock this bad boy just outside of Bahia de Los Muertos.

Lois Tsunoda always wanted a big pargo and this was her first. It wasn’t her last. She got several during the week. Captain Alfredo with our Tailhunter La Paz fleet lends a hand. Big old fat fish. The head is great for soup!

Many of our anglers bring their fish in to have us cook it at our Tailhunter Restaurant on the La Paz malecon waterfront.

Garrett Sills was another of our anglers on his first trip with Tailhunters. He’s got his hands one of those nice pompano that was chewing all week. Captain Gerardo in the photo as well.

Alaska in the house. Gordy Robertson, who guides up in Sitka, Alaska holds up another nice rooster like about the size we were getting all week. They get bigger!

ROOSTERFISH AND WAHOO HIGHLIGHT STRANGE WEEK!

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay Fishing Report for Week of April 12-19, 2015

It wasn’t a great week of fishing, but for certain species it was VERY good fishing. Pesky early spring winds and even a thundershower hampered anglers; made the seas a bit bouncy some days; and thwarted efforts at getting bait some days. So that was no help.

But, overall, it wasn’t bad. Thankfully, rooster fish and pargo carried the day for many of our anglers who caught their first or largest of the species.

La Paz Fishing

Here’s where the winds played the most havoc. Especially in the nights and early mornings. With the mornings a bit blustery about 1/2 the week, it made getting the big mackerel difficult to jig for or purchase. And mackerel are what the big yellowtail like to chew. Consequently, our yellowtail counts were quite a bit down this week.

However, when the mackies were in the bait tank, the fish bit pretty well around Espirito Santo Island. The problem is that so many fish were lost! I would say that about 3 out of every four yellowtail took the anglers right back to the rocks! So, fishing was good. It was the “catching” that was problematic. Some of the fish ran 15-40 pounds that I did see so there was a nice range of fork tails.

One nice bonus were the nice barred pargo (pargo mulato) that were brought in. I mean, these were PIG fish! Just big old fat nasty bad attitude pargo that busted alot of lines and bent the rods. The ones that did get in were 10-20 pounders. One of our clients had us bag up the head for soup and the head alone weighed 5 pounds!

I’m a little worried that with the weather and water getting warmer that we’re already moving away from our cooler water species like the yellowtail and the season maybe be diminishing. I’ve been wrong before. We’ll have to wait and see what the coming weeks bring. I’m sure we’ll get a few more windy times coming up!

Las Arenas/ Bahia de los Muertos (Suenos)

Again, like previous weeks, this is where the variety lies. If you want big fish, but fewer fish, we have our folks fish La Paz. If you just wanted fun grab-bag action and never knowing what you would hook then Las Arenas/ Muertos is where we’d put you. Not kidding…if you add in all the bonito you wanted plus pargo, cabrilla, jack crevalle, sierra, plus fish that busted off…it could easily be a 20-30 fish day!

But the really fun thing were the “bonus fish.” The weekly stars were the pompano and rooster fish that really took off. Especially, the exotic rooster fish. Nothing really really big, but some days each of our pangas would land 3-5 roosters very close to shore that went 10-30 pounds. Larger 30-50 pounders were seen as well! Our flyfishers really enjoyed themselves on the pez gallo! In those same areas, their cousins the pompano made their first good appearance of the season and did great for flyfishers and light tackle guys on these great eating fish.

Tuna were seen, but none hooked but we did get into some nice wahoo at the south side of Cerralvo Island that ate the dark Rapalas and several marlin were hooked and released. Plus we had some amberjack biters as well. Great variety!

WHALESHARKS

Every day, we’ve got 5-10 whalesharks in the bay and folks are having a blast swimming with them!

Lift that baby! Sergio Rodriguez from Santa Barbara hooked this hefty thick yellowtail while still pretty much inside the La Paz Bay near Balandra Beach!

It’s gotta be the great glasses and the high-vis shirt! Aaron Beckord from Oregon gets big smiles with Captain Joel and a huge roosterfish they caught and released near Espirito Santo Island. This day, they caught two roosters and released both. Check out the flat seas!

What a story. School-teacher Mindy Pollock from Orofino Idaho spent some spring break time with us in La Paz and had some big fish over 3 days fishing. On her last day fishing with Captain Boli, handful of nice yellowtail got away, but her LAST fish she hung on! It produced this huge 90-pound amberjack off Espirito Santo Island! Well done!

Love this photo of soon-to-be, Doctor Aaron Beckord who starts his residency at UCLA but took time for a quick trip to La Paz that produced some good fishing including this great photo of one of his big yellowtail.

Joel Puente brought his son fishing and told us, “We don’t need any big fish. Just some “action.” The 12-year-old, Ben shows off his “action” including dorado, cabrilla, skipjack, pargo and another 10 or so fish the released. Happy guys! They are from El Monte CA.

Proudly sporting his “Bass Knuckles” t-shirt, Dan Hypse with one of his yellowtail out’ve La Paz. Earlier they hooked a huge 200 pound manta ray they fought and lost after a 2 hour battle!

He loves to flyfish! Tyler Lyon from Utah spent a few days with us and his flyrod and had a ball with his hand-tied flies taking multiple species including bonito like this…roosterfish…cabrilla…ladyfish…pargo and sierra. (See the photo of Captain Moncho below).

A whopper of a jack crevalle. There’s a reason the Mexican name for them is “toro” (bull). Susie Waters from Orange Co, CA battled this tough guy for a photo then released him.

Tyler Lyon (2 photos above) released all the fish he caught on his flyrod except this one which he gave to Captain Moncho to whip up some great ceviche! Sierra show us that cold water fish are still hanging out.

Rod Brown had too many good photos during his trip not to post one more. Our amigo from Alaska fishing with our Tailhunter Captain Boli, rocked this nice yellowtail north of La Paz Bay.

FISH MIX IT UP UNDER WEEK OF CLOUDY SKIES

La Paz – Las Arenas / Muertos Bay Fishing Report for Week of April 5-12, 2015

Hopefully, you weren’t here for the sunshine this week. Really weird week of weather. Temperature-wise, it was very comfortably moderate, but what happened to the sunshine. It was overcast and gray almost all week which didn’t bode well for folks still trying to catch some rays for spring break and late Easter vacations so I felt badly for them. As you read this, there’s actually a small chance of rain by the weekend for a few hours. Then, it clears up for next week so hopefully back to normal.

Anyway, fishing conditions weren’t bad. A little wind, but nothing drastic. Bait was good for both our Las Arenas and La Paz fleets so right there that’s always a good start to kick off the day knowing that we’ve got live bait which is the life blood of our fishing style here. Last year with El Nino, bait was hard to come by for pretty much all of Baja. But this year, we’ve got sardines for our Las Arenas guys and La Paz has a mix, mostly of mackerel, but also some caballitos and and sardines as well.

So, here goes…

LAS ARENAS/ MUERTOS BAY

We actually got some sunshine there relatively speaking this week. The fishing produced some good action. The wahoo had been going nicely, but none were boated this week although there were some fish that were dropped. However, this is our area to go if you were looking for some action and variety.

This week we had some first timers and family so this was great to get them bent…for some of them…the first time ocean fishing. Nothing huge to speak of, but what a variety. You never knew what the catches would be each day. To give you an example on a single day between several of our pangas we got:

1. Dorado

2. Roosterfish

3. Barred pargo

4. Yellow Snapper

5. Jack crevalle

6. Cabrilla (seabass)

7. Skipjack

8. Bonito (lots of them!)

9. Ladyfish

10. Pompano

11. Dog tooth snapper

And that was just ONE day! Plus, add in the lost wahoo and also a lost marlin and there were some cool fish out there to hook onto.

We also had our first flyfishers of the year as well. I’m always a bit leery this early in the season for flyfishing because you never know about the wind, but our flyfishers got roosters, jacks, bonito and ladyfish and had a blast.

LA PAZ

While not showing as much variety as Las Arenas/ Muertos, our anglers who fished out’ve La Paz got the larger fish. More quality for sure.

Around Espirito Santo Island, there’s several spots that glowed nicely for yellowtail. Fish were running 15-30 pounds and were eating the mackerel as well as the iron. Quite a few fish lost to inexperience, and also, I’m sure the bite would’ve been better, but there was alot of traffic out there because lots of folks are still on vacation. Here in La Paz, spring break is actually two weeks long so there were lots of families out on the water as well as fishermen. By next week, it should calm down a bit better. The fish are definitely there.

In addition to the yellowtail, the same area is also holding some nice amberjack, pargo and hefty cabrilla. Some of the beaches and coves have been good spots to look for roosters with most about 40 pounds or so.

We’re seeing more marlin north of town as the waters get warm and I’ve got reports of bits of sargasso weed starting to break looks and start floating so that’s also a good sign for the dorado to move in.

WHALESHARK WATCH

Yes! They are still in the bay! Our clients are swimming with 3-10 of the “baby” whalesharks almost every day in the shallow water. Most of the babies are 10-20 feet long! Great trip!

Jason Krieg was on a short last-minute trip to La Paz this weekend with his dad and got his first tuna ever that we estimate at about 60 solid pounds! Jason caught it on a sardine and it was his first tuna! He put it in the boat after a 30 minute battle! He had just gotten the fish to the panga when dad’s line went screaming and dad hooked a marlin (see the photos below).

Captain Armando and the Beckord guys…Dr. Bruce Beckord with son Brian and nephew Aaron show off one of their wahoo on the beach at Bahia de Los Muertos. They fished two days out of Muertos with Tailhunters and got a wahoo each day and lost a few others. They fished on the La Paz side and got roosterfish and yellowtail!

Our good friend, from Alaska, Rod Brown and Captain Joel show off the kind of yellowtail we’re popping just north of La Paz around Espirito Santo Island.

Yes! And dorado too! Minnesota, amigo, Jeff Brown and Captain Jorge with a really gorgeous dorado caught out’ve Bahia de Los Muertos!

All the way from Minnesota, Jeff Brown, usually visits La Paz once a year to fish with Tailhunter. He ran into some of that good yellowtail fishing north of La Paz while fishing with Tailhunter’s Captain Joel. Check out the flat water!

See the tuna at the top of the fishing report! Jason Krieg and is dad with a nice striped marlin. Jason was just pulling in his tuna to the panga when dad’s line went off and this nice striper bit a little sardine and it was off-to-the-races! Marlin could not be released and it was dad’s first! Marlin showing up early this year!

FULL MOON DOESN’T SLOW VARIETY OR QUALITY OF FISH!

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay Fishing Report for Week of March 29 to April 5, 2015

It has been a good Easter week for fishing although a bit unpredictable…in a good way! Even with a full moon! There really was some great trophy fishing this week. Maybe not alot of quantity, but the quality of some of the fish was really something to talk about. But, the wackiness was, our fishermen would go chase one kind of fish and get a total surprise with a different kind of fish. They’d go chasing after some other species and then something completely different would show up! Every day was different. Some boats did better than others and, in truth, some pangas didn’t do so hot while others not too far away were bent on fish. But, overall, fishing wasn’t too bad at all!

Las Arenas/ Bahia de los Muertos

With decent stocks of sardines, this is the area where our fleet found the most variety of fish. Roosterfish from 10-40 pounds were along the beach areas and just off the rocky drop-offs. Over at the island, in the area where we got those big tuna last week, the fish appear to be there roving back and forth and moving fast. A few were hooked but many folks just aren’t ready or equipped or experienced to put the wood to that grade of fish and all of them except one, broke off or were lost. But, it’s encouraging to know that there’s tuna there. The one we got this week was a 70 pounder. That’s alot of sashime!

As well, dragging the deep running Rapalas and Yo Zuri’s over the high spots, produced either nice yellowtail or (surprise!)…wahoo! A little early for the speedsters, but no one is complaining. Again, these are quality fish and we’re losing about 1/2 the hookups, but the wahoo coming up are nice 20-40 pound ‘hoos and for this time of year a super bonus. The yellowtail are running 20 pounds or so also with some larger ones getting rocked. If you know how to fish the iron rather than bait, the fishermen who know how to use the jigs are getting far more hooks ups on the ‘tails.

In between the islands and to fill out the mix, there’s some schoolie-dorado ranging around. Nothing really big, but fun-sized 10-15 pounders that are great on light tackle keep popping up as well as jack crevalle, big bonito, and pargo liso, pargo mulatto and smaller dog-tooth snapper. There are also early season billfish in the area as well.

La Paz

This is where the bigger fish are. Out around Espirito Santo Island. Yellowtail have really come on strong. Emphasize the word strong! These fish are 30 pound sluggers. Some larger. You have to turn their heads and as one of our first-time clients said, “These fish don’t nibble!” Made me crack up! No…you better have your socks pulled up and your arms buckled in because these fish slam…HARD! So many fish are getting lost just due to lack of experience. But still exciting. In the same areas, again, a bonus…there’s big amberjack biting. Two of our clients lost a handful of big yellowtail, but still boated an amberjack estimated at 90-pounds this past week. The same areas are also holding rooster fish and smaller pargo.

A big boy! From Orofino, Idaho, Mindy Pollock came to enjoy some spring break from her school-teaching and helps captaiin Pancho and husband Mick hold up a tuna estimated at 120 pounds they took near Cerralvo Island. Mick tells me they fought the fish for about 2 long hours!

World Record? Our super amigo, Ron Brown, from Wrangell, Alaska fishes with us usually twice a year. He caught this massive barred pargo off Espirito Santo Island. He sent me the photo and I showed it to several friends including several IGFA reps. They all said the fish looked larger than the current IGFA barred pargo of 29 pounds. When I asked Rod what he did with the fish he said he gave it to Captain Boli. When I asked our Captain Boli about the fish, he said, “It was delicious!”

This is what I’m talking about! Jeff Brown from Minnesota got several of these slug yellowtail fishing with Captain Boli north of La Paz. Several others were also lost.

La Paz is called the “Roosterfish Capital of the World” for good reason. Check out this fish estimated at over 60 pounds with Captain Boli and Jeff Brown. We had several large fish caught and released this week.

Two of the best fishermen I know and good friends from San Diego, Mitch Chavira and Charlie “Stix” McGee caught and released this paid of nice roosters near Espirito Santo Island.

WHAT A DIFFERENCE A WEEK MAKES! WOW!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of March 22-29, 2015

We had a mixed bag this past week. The bad days were so-so, but the GOOD days produced some really solid rocking fishing. Both our La Paz AND Las Arenas fleet got into some quality fish…maybe not quantity…but the quality of some of the fish really made it. With air temps into the high 80’s and low 90’s, conditions were mostly good. Co-incidentally, the days when the wind blew are the days when fishing took a powder!

So, the better the weather…the better the fishing. And, like I said, the good fishing was pretty darned good!

For our Las Arenas fleet, inshore the mix produced some pargo, cabrilla, bonito and sierra. But, the big news were the roosters that started to show up with some fish going 30-40 pounds (almost all fish released). But, we also had a good showing at Cerralvo Island of some of the fatter yellowtail as well. Even more exciting was the fast yellowfin tuna that came breezing through!

For our La Paz fleet, that’s where the bigger bad boys started to bend some rods finally. There were some slow days, but the good days produced some slug yellowtail; larger grades of cabrilla and big-time pargo mulatto; plus around Espirito Santo Island, the kind of 30-70 pound rooster fish the La Paz area is known for. There were even some marlin hook-ups. Live bait was the ticket, but on the yellowtail for those guys who know how to fish the iron, it was a bonus! Reportedly, there are some yellowtail just inside of La Paz Bay which would mean there are fish less than 5 minutes off the beach. We’ll have to keep an eye on that.

FINISH WITH A BANG AND NOW TIME TO HEAD HOME!

We finished our 3 months on the road with a blast of a show at the Fred Hall Fishing Show at the Del Mar Fairgrounds in San Diego. Oh my…so many amigos stopping by and it was like a massive fiesta at the Tailhunter Booth. And now it’s time to pack it up head home and let’s get the season rolling! Let’s fishing!

However, before we do that, Jilly and I just wanted to extend a massive MUCHAS GRACIAS to all of you who made us so welcome along the way and all the great shows. From fellow-vendors to visiting amigos and family, you’re the best. As we moved from week to week and from show to show in Sacramento…Denver…Seattle…Portland…Phoenix…Yakima…Long Beach…Salt Lake City and San Diego, it could not have been better and we thank you for all the smiles and laughs. Tailhunter has the most awesome tribal members and the time went way too fast. We’re blessed and God bless all of you. We’ll see you in La Paz!

Yes! There’s some trophy pelagic species already here. Take a look…a 25 pound wahoo and some nice cabrilla! I wish I had more photos this week, but a number of nice fish were lost this week plus there just weren’t alot of photos!

Some good inshore fishing this week with varying sizes and species like these delicious snapper an cabrilla from Ian Arreola.

COLD WATER – WARM WATER SPECIES PRODUCE VARIETY

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of March 16-22, 2015

Conditions seem to be changing very quickly here in our area. It’s the only explanation why we’re getting such a crazy variety of fish at the moment. Not only are we getting our cold water/ winter species, but some warmer water/ pelagic species are also showing up.

The areas seem to differ, but there’s a pretty interesting mix of fish.

Around Cerralvo Island and with our Tailhunter Las Arenas fleet, we’re getting the usual species like pargo up to about 10 pounds; cabrilla (Mexican sea bass) to about 6 pounds; bonito, sierra, jack crevalle and smaller amberjack. However, we’re also getting rooster fish, school-sized dorado to about 10 pounds and we even got a 40-pound tuna this week off the island. We also hooked marlin and wahoo this week but they broke off.

North of La Paz in the areas around Espirito Santo Island and the high spots, we finally seem to have found some decent spots of yellowtail that are willing to bite on the larger baits as well as on the iron. There’s a few dorado around as well.

GREY WHALES AT LOPEZ MATEOS – WHALESHARKS IN LA PAZ BAY

It’s late in the season, but we’re still seeing the big grey whales at Lopez Mateos at the north end of Bahia Magdalena. Normally, they’re gone by now but, in what seems like a record-breaking whale season, the daily tours we’re running there are still seeing a pretty decent number of moms and babies. Not sure how much longer they will be around, but we’ve surely enjoyed them.

Inside La Paz Bay, the juevnile whale sharks have been hanging out as well and seem to be increasing in number. As many as a dozen “babies” have been seen by our snorkelers. These “babies” have been 10-20 feet long!

LAST SHOW OF THE SEASON THEN HOME TO LA PAZ!

What a road tour it has been! Sacramento…Denver…Puyallup (Seattle)…Portland…Yakima…Phoenix…Long Beach…Boise…Salt Lake City…thanks to everyone who has given us such a great time along the way. You all rock! And now, here we are in San Diego. Gonna go out with a bang! Then, back to La Paz and let’s get to some FISHING!

After 3 months on the road, we’re going out with a bang at one of our favorite shows! Starting on Thursday and going through Sunday (March 26-29th), we’ll be at the Fred Hall Fishing and Boating Show in San Diego at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. This is some GOOD fish! Some of the best eating rockfish from our area and typical of winter fishing. Nice snapper and good-sized cabrilla (Mexican seabass) with Captain Jorge from our Tailhunter Fleet, and our good amigos, Marianne Sugawara and Jeff Sakuda at Bahia de los Muertos.

Changing conditions and warming waters bring in the blue water species and it looks like they’re here early. Butch Tropez and Captain Adolfo with our first official striped marlin of the season taken just offshore. The marlin was not able to be released.

Jeff Sakuda makes several trips a year to La Paz and knows how to fish our waters. He fished several days this week and got this nice snapper and cabrilla among other species!

The best indication that warmer waters are moving in are the showing of dorado (mahi mahi) in our waters. Butch Tropez with a double handful of schoolie-sized dorado at Bahia de Los Muertos.

GOOD CONDITIONS BUT CHANGING FISHERY SHOWS VARIETY!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of March 9-15, 2015

Quite a mix of fish this week. Lately, these days, it’s like a box of cracker jack. You just don’t know what the prize will be when you empty it out. Same with fishing. There’s just no telling what you’ll be catching either. One day, it’s a mix of inshore rock fish. Next day, the rock fish don’t bite, but rooster fish show up. The next day, it’s some pelagic species.

That’s what it was like this week. There was no predicting what might turn up for our fishermen.

On day it was cabrilla (sea bass and bonito). Another day, neither the bonito or cabrilla would bite and instead pargo bit in the rocks and they got some rooster fish along the beach. The following day, when the rock fish wouldn’t bite, venturing a bit outside a tad and our guys got marlin and dorado!

I wish there was a little more predictability, but we seem to be in a transition time when there’s warm and cold water species mixing it up a bit as the waters move away from winter to more spring-like conditions. I think we’ll continue to see a wide variety of species for awhile. We do have reports of yellowtail (finally) north of La Paz by commercial guys and good amounts of bait. Wind can still be an issue but with each week, week should be diminishing.

STILL LOTS OF WHALES IN MAG BAY FOR RECORD SETTING YEAR!

On other lines, we do have alot of folks in town going whale watching at Magdalena Bay where the grey whales seem to be having a record year and the whale watching is off-the-charts. Check out the video. The past season has been a great opportunity for folks to really get right up close to these amazing animals. Closer to town and right in La Paz Bay, more than a 3 dozen juvenile whale sharks have been in the shallow waters and alot of the tourists and locals alike have been swimming with them.

Captain Armando busts a smile over the shoulder of Scott Burnham who trolled up this nice sierra fishing with our Tailhunter Fleet at Las Arenas.

We don’t see many of these, but take a look at the China Mero (Hawkfish) caught by Jeff Burnham. These are tasty fish we occasionally catch around rocky areas.

Jeff Burnham poses with another beautiful sierra. These fish are great eating and tough fighters but during the winter cooler months, they hang out around ridges and beach drop offs near shallow water.

ANOTHER CRAZY WINDY AND RAINY WEEK!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Jan. 25 – Feb. 1, 2015

Not a whole lot to report this past week. We had some crazy days of rain and drizzle and when it wasn’t wet, it was windy either on the front or backside of the storm cells that came through. It didn’t rain hard, but definitely, not great to be outside trying to get a tan. We normally have windy days during this time of year and it’s unusual for us to get rain, but nothing is “for sure” when it comes to weather.

The good side is that we don’t have alot of anglers this time of year and those that do, usually are not hardcore and wanting to fish every day. So, with flexible schedules we can ask them to wait until perhaps another day later in the week is better. That being said, we got some OK inshore action on sierra, bonito and jack crevalle. Not much in the way of bait but have been using baby bonito when we can get them.

We have been keeping an eye on what the commercial guys are doing since they are working any chance they can get out, unlike sports fishing. These guys gotta make a living. They tell me there’s yellowtail at the island and there’s also sardines and mackerel for bait.

The forecast for the coming week is looking pretty good. Nothing but sunshine mostly. Back to normal! It’s gonna be 75 to 80 degrees in the daytime and mid-50’s at night!

Whales are in full “come see us” mode out at Bahia Magdalena and we’re running daily whale watching trips right now.

PORTLAND SPORTMAN’S EXPO COMING UP THIS WEEK!

La Paz in the house. All the way up in Washington, Jeanne and Jeff Brown who own Big Left Turn Yacht Managment in La Paz and were up for the Seattle Boat Show. They stopped in at the Seattle Fairgrounds to say hi. Great to see them. Tom is La Paz’s biggest Seahawks fan at our Tailhunter Restaurant!

The ladies and the youngsters had a GREAT week! Like young Katylyn Luker from Santa Maria CA! Right out of the chute, her first fish on her first day is a big wahoo! Captain Moncho signals touchdown!

Another one of our amigas who had a banner week, Lisa Hicks from Seattle WA, put the hurt on this chunky wahoo at the south end of Cerralvo Island using a Rapala.

Vic Patton has been one of our regular amigos for many seasons! He and Captain Victor show off a real trophy…a dog-tooth snapper! Also called a Cubera Snapper, these are tough tough fish and getting the out’ve the rocks is an accomplisment!

Two more of our first-timers…Mike and Robbi Caray came down from their farm outside of Portland OR to enjoy some sunshine and had an incredible day on some big dorado like this 40 pound class beast! Mike fought this fish for over 45 minutes!

Brothers Andy and Raphael Montejano had one of THOSE kinds of days…Andy nails this big rooster and Rafi put the hurt on a wahoo. It was their first time fishing and they also got dorado and snapper on an incredible day.

Our new amigo from Idaho, Tom Mullican, was here for almost two weeks of fishing. He was going to fish a few days then take some days off then fish a few more days. After two days of dorado fishing he decided he was having too much fun and booked fishing EVERY SINGLE DAY!

One of the nice surprises of the week was the appearance of the big roosters again. Captain Victor holds up a fish caught by John Hardardt. The fish was released. They are near the rocks just south of Bahia de Los Muertos.

Captain Boli help our long-time friend, John Ehlers from Denver CO, who just got done working at a lodge in Alaska and brought his family down to La Paz. John had a great week on dorado and other species with Captain Boli.

Another one of the nice wahoo we picked up this week, Rod and Nick get an assist from Captan Jorge with their “hoo while on the beach at Bahia de Los Muertos.

Brian Mee from Washington, shows another example of one of the crazy variety we had this week. Using light tackle, Brian brought back a catch of cabrilla and tasty sierra…usually not seen until our waters cool down.

Kris Honkola from San Rafael CA and his amigo, Marcus Dyster all the way from Finland , took this quick photo of one of their sailfish they caught north of La Paz. The sails were thicker than we’re normally used to!

Captain Archangel is all smiles with Mike Davis’ nice wahoo. Mike is from Santa Maria CA and got his first wahoo this week.

Hard to find someone more fun or enthusiastic than our Seattle buddy, Dan Hicks. And he knows how to fish too and loves the light tackle. He had a great week on the dorado!

Roy Zimmerman from Fullerton CA is one of our regular fishing amigos who always does well, but had a tough week on the fishing grounds. However, he DID catch and release this nice rooster south of Bahia de los Muertos.

CRAZY WEEK…NOT ALOT OF QUANTITY…BUT SOME GREAT QUALITY!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Oct. 25-Nov. 2, 2014

It was a different kind of week. It was good for good fish but not good for ALOT of fish! Let me explain…

You’ve heard of “Quality over Quantity.” Well, it was THAT kind of week. There were NOT alot of fish by our standards although there were some nice flurries of dorado, bonito, jack crevalle, sierra and other fish that kept rods bent.

But, those fish could be there one day and gone the next. Or they could be in one spot and move the next day or be there for 30 minutes of madness then the ocean would be calm again and not a fish in sight. That’s just the way it is right now. The seasons are changing. Water and air temperatures are cooling and we’re transitioning to the winter season which is approaching. Shadows are different. Current are different. The wind is starting to blow stronger from the north. It can be a little choppier. We’re going to get some days that the winds might even be too strong to fish comfortably.

The upside to all of this is that there are a tremendous number of species!

Just check out the photos!!!! We probably had as many as a dozen different species of fish…inshore…offshore…blue water…rock fish…We never knew what our folks were going to come back with.

And that’s what made this week really different.

We didn’t have LOTS of fish. We had a lot of DIFFERENT FISH. AND we had some real QUALITY FISH!

Like check out the wahoo this week! This had to be one of the best wahoo weeks of the season. We had one day when almost every one of our pangas hooked at least one wahoo around Cerralvo Island. And these were nice healthy 30-50 pound fish.

Also, for the first time in many months, we got 30-60 pound rooster fish and some huge dorado as well up to about 45 pounds and many others that were lost!

The dilemma in this kind of fishing is that you don’t get many chances. If the fish aren’t milling about, you might get one or two big bites…FOR THE ENTIRE DAY! It might be a big wahoo. It might be a big dorado or rooster fish. For whatever reason, if the fish gets off or you miss the bite or you have your beer in your hand…that’s it! It’s a missed opportunity and the rest of the day could be nothing more than a few bonito.

Or, conversely, there’s two anglers in a panga and one gets a trophy of a lifetime and the other guys twiddles his thumbs the rest of the day. So you get one really happy fella and one saying, “Fishing was really slow.”

One thing however…our ladies, kids and first-timers sure had it going on! Many of them got the big wahoo or big dorado and many of our veteran Tailhunter anglers were the “other guy” in the boat relegated to taking photos! But, it was great to see so many of the rookies kicking butt! Still…I won’t kid you. We did have some disappointed folks who ran into some tough fishing…which then often changed around the next day. Or not…

I think we’re gonna see more of these variable conditions in the next coming weeks as we transition into winter. Overall, however, you can’t ask for prettier conditions just to be here in La Paz. Days are not humid. Just nice sunshine and 85-90 degree air temps. It looks like a postcard. Most days are flat calm. The water is still in the 80’s. Night temps are comfortably in the 70’s.

One head’s up…looks like we do have a bit of rain coming this week with a late-season storm that could hit us mid-week and get us wet and stick us with some strong winds. Then, it moves off quickly.

Wahoo like these were the highlight of a somewhat erratic week of fishing that saw some great action, but also some slow fishing during the middle of the week. However, the appearance of these speedy trophy fish were a big plus around the south end of Cerralvo Island.

Jeff Sakuda and Marianne Sugawara make several trips a year to La Paz and had a good day to start with this big-headed wahoo while they pose on the beach at Bahia de los Muertos.

John Rogers from San Ramon CA has fished with us before, but says his boys, Jay and Jared are now “hooked” and “can’t wait to come back!” after three days of fishing like this including dorado, cabrilla, pargo, bonito and their first marlin.

Captain Blas helps out our Washington amigo, Nash Johnson, with a nice sailfish that he battled on light tackle for 45 minutes north of La Paz. The fish was released. They also got dorado as well.

Mike Vonderahe and Mark Chism had to almost canceled their trip after Hurricane Odile, but were able to make it down from Oregon and started their fishing days off with some decent dorado fishing like these! They also got in some scuba diving later in the week with whale sharks!

Bob Layko from Vancouver WA loves to come down each year to celebrate his birthday with his cousin, Craig Brown. Captain Pancho poses with Bob and Craig on the sand to show off quite a variety of fish including dorado, palometas, pargo and a cabrilla.

Big smiles for a big cabrilla caught by Niels Michaelsen who came all the way from Finland! Captain Boli jumps into the picture as well. The big fish was taken near Espirito Santo Island.

Just to show off some of the variety this week, Erick and Nash Johnson showed up with some pargo mulatto (barred pargo) and red snapper. Dad and son are from Washington.

Dennis is from Greece! He’s got a nice bull dorado fishing with Captain Victor and our Tailhunter Las Arenas fleet. That’s El Sargento/ La Ventana in the background.

We call him, “The Mayor!” He’s one of our most favorite amigos and was not going to let the hurricane prevent him from a few days in La Paz. George Gill started his trip with some nice pargo and snapper. He also had a full day pulling on dorado as well!

Whalesharks have returned to the warm shallow waters of La Paz and this past week was a great opportunity to snorkel with them!

SOME SLOW SPOTS BUT OVERALL A DECENT WEEK OF FISHING WITH VARIETY!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Oct. 12-19, 2014

Perfect weather. Perfect water. Sunny days. Just a hint of breeze. Very little humidity. Could not ask for better conditions. It has been some of the best weather of the season. Like a postcard for the Chamber of Commerce!

So…what happened to the fish?

The week started well with a nice jag of wahoo and a smattering of tuna mixed in with decent dorado, especially around Cerralvo Island. Dark-colored deep-running Rapalas put the hurt to the wahoo…up to 50 pounds…live bait enticed the tuna…while the dorado ate pretty much anything. Some sailfish and marlin were hooked. The week looked promising!

Then, it sort of just fizzled. It was like the fish took a holiday or something. We struggled to get even a single dorado to bite and we resorted to having to go inshore for sierra, pargo and cabrilla. Mix it up with some rooster fish and jack crevalle and that’s the bite.

I wish I knew. Last week when we had a full moon…in fact we had a full lunar eclipse…the fish bit pretty nicely. This week with a minimal moon, the fish are all lock-jawed.

Maybe things are cooling down a little too fast. You can feel a bit of fall/winter in the air and northern winds are starting to creep in. So, maybe the fish are adjusting. But the middle of the week the bite literally just seemed to die.

As we turned the corner into the weekend, thankfully things picked up! For no explainable reason. I didn’t notice anything that had changed. But… Dorado started crashing again plus a few wahoo, billfish and rockfish (pargo and cabrilla) so that rescued the latter part of our week. Hopefully things stay on the upside for awhile as we head down the backside of the season.

DONATIONS FOR HURRICANE RELIEF SNOWBALL FROM GENEROUS AMIGOS!

Collected over 500 pounds in two weeks!

Alen Jones, Victonda Sheasby with Dr. Dennis and Tina Harper showed up with several tables full of school supplies, clothes for kids, playthings that filled about 100 pounds of ice chests and suitcases!

Nash and Steve Johnson from Washington got contributions from friends and neighbors and had a full load of clothes and medical items like aspirin and first aid supplies.

Two long-time friends of ours, “Modelo” Dave Pollard and Hector Chacon from S. California brought in two full ice chests stuffed to the limits with goods. Their respective families put out the word with with friends and the donations started rolling in. In addition to travel-sized toothbrushes and toothpaste, shampoos and school items, their daughters hand rolled dozens of t-shirts so that could pack tightly into two 70-quart ice chests!

The generosity continues. It started as a trickle just after Hurricane Odile almost a month ago and has turned into a wonderful flood and outpouring from so many of our friends and clients. Over the last two weeks we have been posting pictures of some of our Tailhunter friends, and there are more this week. However, this is by no means all of them! There have been so many donations. Some bring enough for a group of sherpas to carry. Others bring a bag or two or fill some empty space in the corner of a suitcase or tackle box. It’s all fantastic! For those who lost so much…or everything…it’s all appreciated. And it’s almost overwhelming that we’re speechlessly grateful.

Since Jill started the drive, she’s probably collected over 500 pounds of supplies and items in just the last TWO WEEKS ALONE! And more arrives daily! She’s making sure it’s all accounted for and going to needy groups where it will do the most good.

So on behalf of all of us at Tailhunters, God bless you all for your help and big hearts! We are blessed and humbled beyond words.

Bruce Dodge (in the shirt with the scales) and his amigos from S.California had a great 3 days of fishing with good numbers or dorado between 10 and 35 pounds plus other species. Here they were with some of their fish from Las Arenas on the beach at Bahia de los Muertos!

Tasty catch and an unusual one for Chris Kerley and his pompano. Normally, we don’t see these fish until springtime. Great eating and related to yellowtail, jack crevalle, roosterfish and amberjack.

It’s great to see folks catch a “FIRST!” For Mike and Karina jennings from Black Diamond, Washington, these are their first roosterfish. In fact, for Karina, it was her first-ever saltwater fish. All fish were released.

POWERFUL HURRICANE ODILE BEARS DOWN ON LA PAZ PUTS SOGGY END TO GOOD WEEK

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Aug 7-14, 2014

Another in a long string of crazy weeks!

Last week Tropical Storm Norbert hit us and interrupted a really nice jag of fishing for a few days. No real damage, just some wind and rain and enough to have to cancel fishing for two days.

But, then, with each passing day away from Norbert, fishing got better and better and better!

For the better part of this week, we were well into some really nice dorado. Good school-sized fish from 8-15 pounds mixed with some larger 20-40 pound models. Both our Tailhunter Las Arenas and Tailhunter La Paz fleets were bent on fish every day!

In addition to the dorado, we were also getting into some sailfish, striped marlin, rooster fish to 50 pounds, a couple of wahoo hookups (none landed) and even some pargo and cabrilla along with the bonito!

A real nice mix. Lots of action. Great conditions. Good numbers of fish.

And all during this time, we saw another storm…”ODILE” forming up south of us. Initially, it looked like it was coming straight for us. It as cause for concern.

But, as with about a dozen storms before it, it started up our way, then with each day it veered further and further west out into the Pacific. At most, we expected a bit of rain and wind. We could handle that.

But, then Saturday night about midnight, ODILE, pulled a fast one and unexpectedly veered right back at Baja. And, as I’m writing this Sunday evening, it’s gonna be a big one. It’s possibly going to be a CATEGORY 4 or 5! That’s “Katrina”-sized storm. That means winds and rains up to about 120-150 mph.

As I’m writing this, rains are just starting to fall and winds are escalating. We were able to fish today, but we’re canceling fishing tomorrow (MONDAY) and probably Tuesday as well as I’m sure the port captain won’t allow anyone out. We expect that by this evening, we’ll start getting the heavy rains and we’ll get slammed SUNDAY NIGHT.

We had the football games going full turbo at our Tailhunter Restaurant, but had to send everyone home after the Chargers/ Seahawks game in order to start dismantling the restaurant to securing everything agains the storm and also to let our employees get home to their families. We’re sandbagging and locking everything down. Basically under siege for a few days. Hopefully, we’ll all be fine.

AND FISHING AGAIN ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THIS!
