A sample of the mix we’re getting right now which is interesting. Dorado, which are warm water fish, mixed with sierra (including some big ones!) which are cold water fish!

NOT MANY ANGLERS AROUND FOR MIXED BAG OF FISH

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of December 14-21, 2014

I think this is the slow-down before the holidays. I think the whole city is just in “mellow Christmas mode” right now. Everyone is excited about Christmas, but it’s just very “tranquil” (peaceful) right now. I think every place is like that right now no matter where you live…unless you’re hitting a shopping mall in the U.S.

Here in Mexico, Christmas season started well before the U.S. Thanksgiving. There’s no Thanksgiving holiday in Mexico so right about Halloween / All Souls Day/ Dia de Los Muertos stores start selling decorations, toys, etc. And people start buying and decorating and getting ready two months ahead of time. Homes have been decorated for weeks. Christmas trees have been up since the end of November (which means the live ones can be pretty dry by now!). Packages have been under the trees for weeks also.

If you’re just headed out to buy toys or decorations now, you’re pretty much out-of-luck! There’s not much to buy. I had trouble finding a string of white lights last week for some that burned out already at the Tailhunter Restaurant! I had to go to 5 stores to find any Christmas lights!

Anyway, not many visitors around either. Next week folks will come in for vacation, but many of them are snow-birds or folks just coming in for the holidays. Not many anglers around! It would be a good time to be on the water since there’s no pressure on the fish at all!

We only had a few anglers ourselves. The only ones out there, for the most part, are the commercial guys.

It was a little windy here and there and kinda bouncy and rough a few days, but that’s typical this time of year. As I’ve mentioned often, we are only fishing with our fleet at Las Arenas/ Bahia de Los Muertos because it’s calmer there and the fish are closer and there’s more variety. With our La Paz fleet, it’s just too rough many days and a long bumpy ride to the fishing grounds for erratic fishing.

But, at Muertos and around Cerralvo, we’re still getting a few dorado up to about 15 pounds. Nothing big, but decent action. There’s still a few roosters around to about 20 pounds. Mostly school-sized fish although someone did latch onto a fish estimated at double that size. They never saw the fish, but it was hooked right there in the “rooster zone” near the Arenas light house and slammed into the bait like a big rooster. The clients had never caught a rooster before and kinda fumbled around and lost the fish! Oh well. Everyone had a laugh.

There are still some great inshore stuff too. Sierra are becoming more abundant as the waters get cold and in the rocks, we got some decent cabrilla and small pargo.

Tracey and Brian Campbell tags small dorado 12-14

Tracey and Brian Campbell were originally supposed to visit us last September, but Hurricane Odile got in the way . They were able to visit us this past week and get in some scuba diving, snorkeling and even a few days of fishing. Day one produced some nice dorado for taking back to Maryland and for dinner at Tailhunter Restaurant!

Carlos Cota just went out for an hour. That’s all the time he had. We went just past the point in about 30 feet of water to catch a few snapper for dinner and ended up with this striped marlin instead. Just shows some of the crazy variety right now. They weren’t able to release the billfish.

Captain Jorge and Yolanda Wheeler, our amiga from Las Vegas got some HUGE sierra not too far offshore from Bahia de Los Muertos.

CRAZY MIX OF FISH STILL HAPPENING BUT COOLER CONDITIONS ARRIVE

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Dec. 7-14, 2014

This past week was much more characteristic of December fishing. We had a little wind. A little breeze, especially late in the day. Waters are turning cooler and so is the air temp, but the sun has been out all week and it’s a pleasant time to be in town. Not many folks are in town now so you have the waters and the town pretty much to yourselves.

For the fishing, it seemed like it was different from day-to-day and panga to panga. All of our fishing right now, is pretty much with our Las Arenas fleet, because the waters out of La Paz are more subject to the rougher waters and also greener waters not conducive to very good fishing.

But, for the bite, we’re still getting some nice wahoo…some billfish…and dorado. Plus rooster fish seem to pop up ever few days as well. The problem now is that it’s not consistent. I tell folks there’s a big difference every day. If the blue water fish aren’t biting then the inshore fish like sierra, pargo and cabrilla be come the target or, if the waters are bouncy or rough, there’s just no way to go too far out and you’re relegated to staying closer inshore fishing structure fish like the species mentioned.

The rub is that it’s hard to tell which fish will bite when. We do keep an eye on the winds and generally speaking if the winds are blowing from the north, then we’re gonna be fishing inshore and there’s not too much chance of blue water species. However, that being said, we DID hook a striped marlin this week less than 50 yards from shore in only about 30 feet of water and some of the dorado we hooked this week were close to shore as well!

Lucie and her husband, Tom, only had one day to fish and said they’d be “happy with a small fish to eat for dinner at our Tailhunter Restaurant.” No pressure. No stress! Well, so much for that ! She caught and released this nice sailfish. See the photos below, she also got a wahoo. Plus the 3rd photo down, her husband also got several nice dorado!

One day fishing…not bad! Guys come for years trying to get a wahoo. Lucie Merkle gets a sailfish (released) plus a wahoo and some dorado!

Professor Tom Merkle from San Jose CA shows off another nice dorado fishing out’ve Bahia de Los Muertos on one of the days that the winds were down. He and his wife also got a wahoo and released a sailfish!

She is soooo good at this ! Donna Thompson got into the fishing report again with this hefty hefty roosterish in the channel between La Ventana and Cerralvo Island. This fish was released! Surprising to have such quality roosters still around this late in the season, but no complaints!

Roger Thompson is a regular poster child for fishing our area and he always sticks big fish like this trophy wahoo he tries to “curl” for the camera! Nicely done (AGAIN!), Roger!

MID-WEEK WINDS SLOW FISHING BUT FISH STILL AROUND

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Dec. 1-7, 2014

It was a tad on the breezy side this week as north winds seem to be gradually taking hold here as winter approaches. Still, some great sunny days to be in La Paz as the city takes on it’s Christmas face for the holidays.

We’ve been doing almost all our fishing out’ve Las Arenas as the waters outside of La Paz Bay continue to be on the rougher side and often turned over and murky with fishing sketchy at best the last two weeks since the winds kicked it up a notch.

However, with out Las Arenas fleet pushing off at Bahia de Los Muertos, even when it’s windy, we’re better protected and the fishing grounds are much much closer plus there’s more variety of fish.

This week, there weren’t many anglers out, but there’s still some school-sized dorado meandering around. Most are about 10 pounds, but there’s an occasional 20-30 pounder still out there. Wahoo and billfish are not out’ve the question with most holding near the south end of Cerralvo Island, but there’s also been some bites just minutes outside of Bahia de Los Muertos just north of the big houses but before you reach Punta Perico.

Inshore, there’s still some nice rooster fish to 30 pounds hanging around plus cabrilla and small pargo (snapper) in the rocks and we’re seeing more jack crevalle and sierra near the beaches as well.

Jesse had one day to squeeze in for fishing and made the most of it with a nice rack of dorado to put in the freezer. If he’s not smiling, it’s cuz he told me had had a wahoo estimated at 60 pounds all the way to the boat before it broke loose!

Yes! There’s crazy roosterfish still around. They started showing up about a month ago and have been running up to about 50 pounds! Brian Mee from Eastern Washington was fishing light tackle and shows off a great sampel of the kind of roosters we’re getting. This big boy was released!

Carlos Cifuentes had never been fishing before he tried a day on the water with our Tailhunter Capt. Armando fishing from Bahia de los Muertos! They got 4 nice dorado and lost several others prompting Carlos to laughing tell us, “My shoulders are so sore! I never caught fish before like this!”

Some of the wahoo we’re getting are just minutes from leaving the beach just around the corner from Bahia de Los Muertos. Captain Jorge put the guys into this fat ‘hoo!

Our gran amigo, Art Savedra, the famous “Captain Hook” was here working the Baja 1000 race but stayed a few extra days to get in some fishing and scuba. He’s here on the beach with Captain Armando and dinner!

DORADO STILL AROUND BUT OTHER SPECIES HELP OUT AS COOLER CONDITIONS COME IN!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Nov. 16-23, 2014

A bit windier this week with a few days that were really bouncy, but still overall really pleasant conditions. But, as we get closer to winter we’re going to see more winds and especially winds from the north. But, for that very reason is why we’re doing most of our fishing from Las Arenas right now since we can launch from the beach at Bahia de Los Muertos where we’re a bit more protected from the winds and it’s also easier since the fishing is much closer…like RIGHT THERE!

I’m not kidding. We’re getting a variety of fish within minutes of where we launch. The bay itself is holding some decent rooster fish up to about 40 pounds. By the northern point of rocks, there’s jack crevalle and cabrilla. As soon as you pass the point, drop the lures and there’s always the possibility of wahoo literally within a hundred yards of the rocks! Go south or just outside to the buoys and you can hit dorado.

Anywhere in between, there’s also the chance of more wahoo, billfish (sails mostly), pargo, and bonito. Great variety and in between these gusty days, conditions are about as pleasant as you could want with air temps in the low 80’s and water temps just about the same. Just be flexible on your fishing days, if you can, in case the day you want to go out looks like the wind is going to kick in.

Keep an eye out as well. There’s so much sea life out there. Schools of dolphin…sea turtles…whalesharks…blue whales…manta rays. Pretty incredible time to be in La Paz!

A LITTLE THANKSGIVING MESSAGE FROM US

We just wanted to take the time to wish you and your family a very peaceful and happy Thanksgiving. We’ve had a crazy tumultuous year here in La Paz. Mother Nature did what Mother Nature does and not much to be done about it except roll with it and try to keep smiling. Crazy El Nino year affected the fishing. Storms and hurricanes. Winds and heat…we pretty much had it all. But, through it all, so many of you kept us smiling and laughing and remembering how very blessed we are to even be here. Thanks for your support. Touch all the bases! Talk about “grand slamming” Rafi Achmetov from Virginia and Arlan Schmitz (New Mexico), flank Captain Jorge with three nice catches! They had barely left the beach at Muertos when the big wahoo hit. They got that in the boat and got hit by the dorado then topped it off with a roosterfish (not able to release). Great example of some of the variety right now.

Whoa! That’s a fat wahoo for Virgil Redwine and Bob Donahue! The duo had some kind of week with us! They used conventional tackle for the wahoo but with the flyrod, they got numerous dorado, jack crevalle, roosterfish and other species!

After a week of fishing in Cabo, Randy Matz and Barbara Morris from Coalinga CA came north to do a bit of panga fishing with us. They show off some of their catch…a trophy-sized pompano and a dorado.

Catch of the week for Marty Koschnitzke! He and his girlfriend, Belle, got a couple handfuls of dorado with Captain Armando, then he proposed to Belle on the beach back in La Paz and she said, “Yes!” Congratulations to them both!

Surprising roosterfish bite for so late in the year! Virgil Redwine caught and released over a dozen roosters many on the flyrod. The roosterfish have been very good to us the last few weeks!

They were able to squeeze in one day of fishing and Joe Cisneros and his bud, Carlos Rojas from San Diego turned in a nice day…they got this fat wahoo and lost two others at the boat!

Mike Carter who lives in Pescadero just south of La Paz put the hurt on some dorado plus this nice pair of tasty pompano. These are fish we normally don’t see until the springtime.

Another cold-water fish that showed up lately indicative of the changing season…sierra! Captain Pancho poses with Brian Mee from eastern Washington and this speedy sierra!

A rare catch! It’s a mutant cabrilla (seabass) that we call a “Baja Grouper” or “Golden Grouper” that we catch now and then. Captain Archangel seems a bit distressed, but he’s one of our best at catching reef species!

Virgil Redwine and Bob Donahue had a great week….wahoo…dorado…sierra…roosterfish…jack crevalle…roosterfish…They released most of their fish too!

SOLID FISHING – CRAZY WAHOO – VARIETY!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Nov. 9-16, 2014

Perfect conditions…willing fish…lots of variety…light traffic…a nice action week of fishing!

Our anglers this past week probably could not have asked for better conditions that we often get at this time of the year. There can be days as we transition from warmer to colder conditions where the winds blow strong and cool and it gets a bit choppy. We’ll see more of those kinds of days as we get closer to December, but this past week wasn’t one of them as the season winds down.

This time of year, we get fewer fishermen and more folks simply escaping for a few days in the sunshine from colder areas or here for the holidays. So, if this is truly the end of our fishing “rush” for the season, it’s closing with a bang!

There were incredible varieties this week. Bottom fish. Topwater fish. Bluewater game fish. Warm water fish. Cold water fish. Trophy fish. They pretty much all game to the party in one way, shape or form. Some days were better than others. Some boats did better than others. But the whole week…taken in totality… provided some excellent action, especially if the anglers fished more than one day. Our conventional anglers did great. Our light tackle folks did great. Some of our BEST fishing was had by our flyfishermen…after a season that was really tough on flyfishing!

I’m not sure where to start.

For one thing, I’m pretty convinced now that our La Paz side fishing is headed into winter condtions. Fishing for La Paz has been pretty inconsistent as waters cool down. There’s still some dorado, but it’s erratic. For that reason, most of our fishermen are fishing with our Tailhunter Las Arenas fleet. Waters seem to be holding warmer and, even on the breezy days, fishing is closer to shower and there’s no arguing with the variety. Everyone is getting fish every day. I would say the anglers who go for the “home run” fish and chase the big trophy fish are most likely to be at the whims of nature, the fish and luck, while the anglers who “go with the flow” and chase whatever is biting have had the better success.

The majority of the fish were dorado. Nothing huge, but fun 10-20 pounders were common. Great for the first-timers, light tackle and the flyfishers. We also had bonito, jack crevalle and schools of sierra and incredibly surprising numbers of rooster fish show up that all meant great bent rod action plus a few sailfish hooked and lost. We also got a few nice wahoo off that high spot at the south end of Cerralvo Island. Incredibly, some of our wahoo were being caught right against the rocks just outside of Bahia de Los Muertos just a few minutes off the beach.

On the bottom and off the reefs and rocks, we saw amberjack for the first time. None of the huge ones, but 10-20 pound amberjack are a fun size and great eating at that size. Plus dog-tooth cubera snapper (pargo), barred pargo, yellow snapper and cabrilla (Mexican sea bass) in varying sizes up to the larger 15 pound pargo.

It was the kind of week that you almost never knew what you were going to catch. It really feels like we’re right on the brink of things changing over. I don’t know how much longer this kind of fishing will continue. It could change by the time you’re reading this. We’re right on the brink. It just has that “feel” as I watch the waters, the winds and the air temperatures every day. However, with this “El Nino” season, there’s just no telling and I’ve been wrong all season! So, until things change, we’ll continue to ride the wave and enjoy the bite!

The ladies and the youngsters had a GREAT week! Like young Katylyn Luker from Santa Maria CA! Right out of the chute, her first fish on her first day is a big wahoo! Captain Moncho signals touchdown!

Another one of our amigas who had a banner week, Lisa Hicks from Seattle WA, put the hurt on this chunky wahoo at the south end of Cerralvo Island using a Rapala.

Vic Patton has been one of our regular amigos for many seasons! He and Captain Victor show off a real trophy…a dog-tooth snapper! Also called a Cubera Snapper, these are tough tough fish and getting the out’ve the rocks is an accomplisment!

Two more of our first-timers…Mike and Robbi Caray came down from their farm outside of Portland OR to enjoy some sunshine and had an incredible day on some big dorado like this 40 pound class beast! Mike fought this fish for over 45 minutes!

Brothers Andy and Raphael Montejano had one of THOSE kinds of days…Andy nails this big rooster and Rafi put the hurt on a wahoo. It was their first time fishing and they also got dorado and snapper on an incredible day.

Our new amigo from Idaho, Tom Mullican, was here for almost two weeks of fishing. He was going to fish a few days then take some days off then fish a few more days. After two days of dorado fishing he decided he was having too much fun and booked fishing EVERY SINGLE DAY!

One of the nice surprises of the week was the appearance of the big roosters again. Captain Victor holds up a fish caught by John Hardardt. The fish was released. They are near the rocks just south of Bahia de Los Muertos.

Captain Boli help our long-time friend, John Ehlers from Denver CO, who just got done working at a lodge in Alaska and brought his family down to La Paz. John had a great week on dorado and other species with Captain Boli.

Another one of the nice wahoo we picked up this week, Rod and Nick get an assist from Captan Jorge with their “hoo while on the beach at Bahia de Los Muertos.

Brian Mee from Washington, shows another example of one of the crazy variety we had this week. Using light tackle, Brian brought back a catch of cabrilla and tasty sierra…usually not seen until our waters cool down.

Kris Honkola from San Rafael CA and his amigo, Marcus Dyster all the way from Finland , took this quick photo of one of their sailfish they caught north of La Paz. The sails were thicker than we’re normally used to!

Captain Archangel is all smiles with Mike Davis’ nice wahoo. Mike is from Santa Maria CA and got his first wahoo this week.

Hard to find someone more fun or enthusiastic than our Seattle buddy, Dan Hicks. And he knows how to fish too and loves the light tackle. He had a great week on the dorado!

Roy Zimmerman from Fullerton CA is one of our regular fishing amigos who always does well, but had a tough week on the fishing grounds. However, he DID catch and release this nice rooster south of Bahia de los Muertos.

CRAZY WEEK…NOT ALOT OF QUANTITY…BUT SOME GREAT QUALITY!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Oct. 25-Nov. 2, 2014

It was a different kind of week. It was good for good fish but not good for ALOT of fish! Let me explain…

You’ve heard of “Quality over Quantity.” Well, it was THAT kind of week. There were NOT alot of fish by our standards although there were some nice flurries of dorado, bonito, jack crevalle, sierra and other fish that kept rods bent.

But, those fish could be there one day and gone the next. Or they could be in one spot and move the next day or be there for 30 minutes of madness then the ocean would be calm again and not a fish in sight. That’s just the way it is right now. The seasons are changing. Water and air temperatures are cooling and we’re transitioning to the winter season which is approaching. Shadows are different. Current are different. The wind is starting to blow stronger from the north. It can be a little choppier. We’re going to get some days that the winds might even be too strong to fish comfortably.

The upside to all of this is that there are a tremendous number of species!

Just check out the photos!!!! We probably had as many as a dozen different species of fish…inshore…offshore…blue water…rock fish…We never knew what our folks were going to come back with.

And that’s what made this week really different.

We didn’t have LOTS of fish. We had a lot of DIFFERENT FISH. AND we had some real QUALITY FISH!

Like check out the wahoo this week! This had to be one of the best wahoo weeks of the season. We had one day when almost every one of our pangas hooked at least one wahoo around Cerralvo Island. And these were nice healthy 30-50 pound fish.

Also, for the first time in many months, we got 30-60 pound rooster fish and some huge dorado as well up to about 45 pounds and many others that were lost!

The dilemma in this kind of fishing is that you don’t get many chances. If the fish aren’t milling about, you might get one or two big bites…FOR THE ENTIRE DAY! It might be a big wahoo. It might be a big dorado or rooster fish. For whatever reason, if the fish gets off or you miss the bite or you have your beer in your hand…that’s it! It’s a missed opportunity and the rest of the day could be nothing more than a few bonito.

Or, conversely, there’s two anglers in a panga and one gets a trophy of a lifetime and the other guys twiddles his thumbs the rest of the day. So you get one really happy fella and one saying, “Fishing was really slow.”

One thing however…our ladies, kids and first-timers sure had it going on! Many of them got the big wahoo or big dorado and many of our veteran Tailhunter anglers were the “other guy” in the boat relegated to taking photos! But, it was great to see so many of the rookies kicking butt! Still…I won’t kid you. We did have some disappointed folks who ran into some tough fishing…which then often changed around the next day. Or not…

I think we’re gonna see more of these variable conditions in the next coming weeks as we transition into winter. Overall, however, you can’t ask for prettier conditions just to be here in La Paz. Days are not humid. Just nice sunshine and 85-90 degree air temps. It looks like a postcard. Most days are flat calm. The water is still in the 80’s. Night temps are comfortably in the 70’s.

One head’s up…looks like we do have a bit of rain coming this week with a late-season storm that could hit us mid-week and get us wet and stick us with some strong winds. Then, it moves off quickly.

Kris Honkola from San Rafael CA was a first-time visitor with Tailhunter and set out to get a wahoo with us. On his very first day he tagged up this big-headed speedster south of Cerralvo Island.

Cathy Corda, here with husband Craig, had a pretty fantastic day. Not only did they get into the dorado school big-time, but Cathy got her first wahoo. What makes it more remarkable is that the fish bent out the hook and when they got it aboard…THE FISH WAS NOT HOOKED! The line made a half-hitch loop around the tail and had lassoed the fish! Great story!

Our long-time amigos from the San Francisco Bay area, Bill Lee and John McLucas had a week’s-worth of good fishing with our Las Arenas fleet. Here’s a sample of dorado, cabrilla and a rainbow runner.

It was a pretty good week for billfish…marlin and sailfish with a remarkable number of hookups! Most caught fish were released. Alexa Kadota took these spectacular photos right close to shore as her dad’s sailfish fought close to the panga.

Our new amiga from Utah, Janie Edge and her husband, Randy were fishing with Captain Victor and did pretty good on some schoolie dorado.

Nothing like a vacation with dad and getting pulled outta school! John Rogers from San Ramon, CA, took his boys, Jared and Jay out for a few days fishing with us and show off some of their dorado they caught north of La Paz around Espirito Santo Island.

These two brothers had to be some of the funniest guys all week…Andy and Rafi Montejano pose with a big pargo and cabrilla which we saw more of this week as the weather and conditions change.

You can tell waters are getting a little cooler because we don’t normally get pompano except in the springtime. However, our amigo John Ehlers from the Denver CO area, got this tasty pompano just off Bahia de los Muertos with Captain Pancho.

SEASONS CHANGING AND GETTNG COOLER BRINGING DIFFERENT FISH VARIETY:

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Oct. 20-27, 2014

We could not be asking for better conditions right now these last two weeks or so. Air temperatures have dropped significantly down to the low to mid-90’s. The humidity is gone so it’s just great sunshine. Water temps are still in the mid-80’s. And, although winds seem to be gradually increasing, there’s just a hint of perfect breeze each day. Barely a cloud in the sky. Nights are ideal and in the 70’s. If you’re walking around La Paz, it’s like being in a post card.

Basically, I think it means conditions are changing. They’re moving from the warmer summer days now tapering into our late fall bite.

Fishing has been OK to good for the most part. Not spectacular, but there were some nice highlights. I think we’re in transition now for the seasons. However, for most anglers fishing a few days, everyone is getting fish. There’s some nice highlights and bonus, and some days when the dorado go crazy but then there’s others when the bite drops off and gets a little more picky. Like I said, things are transitioning.

Dorado are still our mainstay with fish in the 10-20 pound class mostly. Some larger. Quite few smaller. Great fun on light tackle. Most of the larger fish have been lost, but we have seen some in the 40 pound category come and go…and keep going! But, dorado make up about 70% of our bite. But the fish seem more scattered and wide-ranging. There are still some concentrated schools, but they seem to be breaking up and moving quite a bit. One day we find the spots and other days it’s hunt-and-peck. It changes almost daily.

However, that’s been rounded out with a pretty nice bite on billfish. Striped marlin are around as well as blue and black marlin. But, the big surprise have been the number of sailfish around. We had some days when there were multiple hook-ups on our pangas. One day one of our pangas hooked 4 and were able to release 3. Another released 2. Several others released 1’s and 2’s and numerous other billfish have been seen feeding on bait or in the middle of the bonito and dorado schools. We had two large blue marlin hooked and dropped during the week.

The variety this time of year has been increasing as well. In addition to the billfish and dorado, wahoo keep popping up near Espirito Santo Island and inshore, we’re getting more pargo, cabrilla, red snapper, and even some sierra which is a sure indication that waters are cooling a bit. Additionally, we’re getting rainbow runners, lots of bonito, jack crevalle and still finding some school-sized rooster fish along the beaches. Not alot of big fish, but … Lots of great action!

But, you can see what’s coming in…clothes, shoes..toiletries…school supplies..first aid items…

Wahoo like these were the highlight of a somewhat erratic week of fishing that saw some great action, but also some slow fishing during the middle of the week. However, the appearance of these speedy trophy fish were a big plus around the south end of Cerralvo Island.

Jeff Sakuda and Marianne Sugawara make several trips a year to La Paz and had a good day to start with this big-headed wahoo while they pose on the beach at Bahia de los Muertos.

John Rogers from San Ramon CA has fished with us before, but says his boys, Jay and Jared are now “hooked” and “can’t wait to come back!” after three days of fishing like this including dorado, cabrilla, pargo, bonito and their first marlin.

Captain Blas helps out our Washington amigo, Nash Johnson, with a nice sailfish that he battled on light tackle for 45 minutes north of La Paz. The fish was released. They also got dorado as well.

Mike Vonderahe and Mark Chism had to almost canceled their trip after Hurricane Odile, but were able to make it down from Oregon and started their fishing days off with some decent dorado fishing like these! They also got in some scuba diving later in the week with whale sharks!

Just to show off some of the variety this week, Erick and Nash Johnson showed up with some pargo mulatto (barred pargo) and red snapper. Dad and son are from Washington.

We call him, “The Mayor!” He’s one of our most favorite amigos and was not going to let the hurricane prevent him from a few days in La Paz. George Gill started his trip with some nice pargo and snapper. He also had a full day pulling on dorado as well!

Whalesharks have returned to the warm shallow waters of La Paz and this past week was a great opportunity to snorkel with them!

SOME SLOW SPOTS BUT OVERALL A DECENT WEEK OF FISHING WITH VARIETY!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Oct. 12-19, 2014

Perfect weather. Perfect water. Sunny days. Just a hint of breeze. Very little humidity. Could not ask for better conditions. It has been some of the best weather of the season. Like a postcard for the Chamber of Commerce!

So…what happened to the fish?

The week started well with a nice jag of wahoo and a smattering of tuna mixed in with decent dorado, especially around Cerralvo Island. Dark-colored deep-running Rapalas put the hurt to the wahoo…up to 50 pounds…live bait enticed the tuna…while the dorado ate pretty much anything. Some sailfish and marlin were hooked. The week looked promising!

Then, it sort of just fizzled. It was like the fish took a holiday or something. We struggled to get even a single dorado to bite and we resorted to having to go inshore for sierra, pargo and cabrilla. Mix it up with some rooster fish and jack crevalle and that’s the bite.

I wish I knew. Last week when we had a full moon…in fact we had a full lunar eclipse…the fish bit pretty nicely. This week with a minimal moon, the fish are all lock-jawed.

Maybe things are cooling down a little too fast. You can feel a bit of fall/winter in the air and northern winds are starting to creep in. So, maybe the fish are adjusting. But the middle of the week the bite literally just seemed to die.

As we turned the corner into the weekend, thankfully things picked up! For no explainable reason. I didn’t notice anything that had changed. But… Dorado started crashing again plus a few wahoo, billfish and rockfish (pargo and cabrilla) so that rescued the latter part of our week. Hopefully things stay on the upside for awhile as we head down the backside of the season.

DONATIONS FOR HURRICANE RELIEF SNOWBALL FROM GENEROUS AMIGOS!

Collected over 500 pounds in two weeks!

Alen Jones, Victonda Sheasby with Dr. Dennis and Tina Harper showed up with several tables full of school supplies, clothes for kids, playthings that filled about 100 pounds of ice chests and suitcases!

Nash and Steve Johnson from Washington got contributions from friends and neighbors and had a full load of clothes and medical items like aspirin and first aid supplies.

Two long-time friends of ours, “Modelo” Dave Pollard and Hector Chacon from S. California brought in two full ice chests stuffed to the limits with goods. Their respective families put out the word with with friends and the donations started rolling in. In addition to travel-sized toothbrushes and toothpaste, shampoos and school items, their daughters hand rolled dozens of t-shirts so that could pack tightly into two 70-quart ice chests!

The generosity continues. It started as a trickle just after Hurricane Odile almost a month ago and has turned into a wonderful flood and outpouring from so many of our friends and clients. Over the last two weeks we have been posting pictures of some of our Tailhunter friends, and there are more this week. However, this is by no means all of them! There have been so many donations. Some bring enough for a group of sherpas to carry. Others bring a bag or two or fill some empty space in the corner of a suitcase or tackle box. It’s all fantastic! For those who lost so much…or everything…it’s all appreciated. And it’s almost overwhelming that we’re speechlessly grateful.

Since Jill started the drive, she’s probably collected over 500 pounds of supplies and items in just the last TWO WEEKS ALONE! And more arrives daily! She’s making sure it’s all accounted for and going to needy groups where it will do the most good.

So on behalf of all of us at Tailhunters, God bless you all for your help and big hearts! We are blessed and humbled beyond words.

Late breaking news! SUNDAY…Wow! Lookit this! WAHOO DAY! Anyone in the S. California fishing industry knows pro Danny Kadota. He and his daughter Alexa were with Captain Victor today and got THREE wahoo and had another one bite through 250 pound mono! Check out Alexa’s massive ‘hoo!

FOOTBALL SEASON FINALLY? The football-sized yellowfin tuna finally made an appearance for the year. There weren’t many of them, but the sprinkling of fish were a nice surprise the last two weeks like this one by Steve Snead from Boise Idaho, who had a great week. He’s here with Captain Pancho.

Louie Sanchez, was not going to be denied his Baja trip to celebrate his 50th birthday and anniversary with his wife and family. After the hurricane, they jumped through all kinds of hoops to get down from home and Denver and got in some OK dorado fishing.

First-time tuna for Ken Campbell from Lakewood CA with amigo, Jeremy Friez (helping out holding up the tail). Next time we’ll get Ken to eat the heart…as is the custom with first-time tuna takers!

Steve Snead had a great story. He finally got his marlin off the bucket list. He was already hurting from a bad back, then tied into this gorgeous 150-pound class striped marlin. On light tackle, Steve and his back battled the first for 45 tough minutes. He got the fish out just long enough to take a picture then released it swimming strong. He came back to shore and went bed with a big smile but completely whupped.

She’s a champ! Young Sierra Sanchez is only 8-years-old, but was quite a trooper coming down to La Paz and fishing for the first time. The youngster is from the Denver, Colorado area and shows off her first dorado proudly with Captain Joel.

Determined to make it down, Steve Walker from idaho and his amigo, flew into Loreto then took our 5-hour shuttle to La Paz to make sure not to miss their fishing trip! Steve’s got a nice big bull on the gaff here that he caught north of La Paz.

I don’t know how he stays so clean fishing in all white clothes all day! But, Chris Malley had a pretty good week including these two yellowfun tuna he caught off Bahia de Los Muertos!

Wiley Randolph from Fullerton CA…another big heart ….and a great shopper…brought down brand new kids’ shoes, schools supplies and medical first aid things for Jill’s hurricane relief efforts.

Jill, Cortez, Sierra and Louie Flores…all the way from Denver for the week and stuffed their bags with clothes, schools supplies and other great stuff for the hurricane relief. Big smiles and big hearts. Thanks to a wonderful family.

AIRPORTS OPEN – FISHERMEN COMING BACK – SO ARE THE FISH!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Oct. 5-12, 2014

Since hurricane Odile, three weeks ago, we’ve played cat-and-mouse with some erratic weather that seems to keep popping up and dropping some thundershowers on us now and then. Mostly, it’s been great weather, but like the rest of the season, we do have to keep watching the weather reports and the horizon to check for building thunderheads.

However, for the first time since as long as I can remember, I’m looking at the weather forecasts the last few days and into the next few weeks and there’s zero precipitation forecast. There are no little “weather icons” on the internet with little clouds and thunderbolts or rain icons on top of the daily advisories! We’ve got gorgeous 95 degree sunny weather for days and fishing conditions could not be better.

As for the fishing, it’s making a comeback.

The fish got hit pretty hard too with the crazy weather and green dirty water really mixed it up from the storms and the run-off and it takes times to settle in. Each week, the water seems to get a little better.

Fishing isn’t great, but it’s good most days and there’s even some jags of “very good” thrown in.

LA PAZ FISHING

Dorado have been the most consistent players, especially for our Tailhunter La Paz fleet. There are spots of dorado just inside La Paz Bay and in various places around Espirito Santo Island, but the best concentration and larger fish are around the Rosario / Las Cruces area in the channel between La Paz peninsula and Cerralvo Island. Fish aren’t bit, but they’re fun decent fish of 10-20 pounds with an occasional 30 pounder. Some days are better than others. Some boats will get limits some days while others right next to them will hit only a handful of fish or less. But, the fish are there!

Likewise, there seems to be a nice bit of marlin and sailfish around right now. Most have been caught incidentally while fishing for other species, but we’ve been hooking them all last week. Not alot, but every day is different. We had one day where almost every one of our pangas hooked at least one billfish. The next day there were only 2 hooked. Next day nothing. Day after that there were 4. All fish either broke off or were released except one which was kept and donated.

As a little sidebar, we had 2 wahoo hooked and cut off as well this week.

Late update: Got some wahoo late Saturday off Espirito Santo Island!

LAS ARENAS

This area has been a bit of a puzzle this past week. The biggest news is that we got our first football yellowfin tuna in a long long time. There’s some spots of tuna that keep popping up around Cerralvo Island with some fish up to 100-pound reported by commercial fishermen.

The bad news is that we only got about a dozen footballs all week that went 12-20 pounds. That’s it. There are so many bonito around that you catch about 20 bonito to get one tuna…if at all. I mean, it’s alot of fun and alot of action. But, if you’re looking for some good ahi meat to take home, it’s alot of energy. Still, it’s nice to have the tuna around!

The other downside is that if you spend the better part of your day chasing tuna, you won’t get much else. So, the counts have not been real good for our Tailhunter Las Arenas fleet. When they DO chase other species, there’s dorado around and the pangas will get 2-8 fish hooked up per day and the counts differ. It all depends if the guys went after the tuna or not.

So, what alot of our guys are doing is getting their dorado and ice chests filled by fishing La Paz, then specifically going for tuna with our other Tailhunter Fleet at Las Arenas. Seems to work out OK.

Last minute update: Five wahoo taken on two pangas late Sunday up to 50 pounds!

HURRICANE UPDATES

We’re up an running. Airports are open. Flights are in. The Los Cabos Airport officially opened months earlier than anticipated on Oct. 3rd and welcomed their first flights on United and Alaska on Oct. 8th with mariachi bands and water cannon salutes! Other airlines are coming online. La Paz and Loreto Airports have been open for several weeks. Still doing some cleanup in the streets and to some businesses and homes, but the heavy work is mostly done and most things are running like normal. Most visitors would never even know anything happened! Come fishing!

FINALLY! Look what popped up! After seeing “signs” of tuna ever since the hurricane, we finally got a few and hopefully, these are the vanguard for a building bite! Standing on the beach at Muertos, Louie Sanchez from Denver and Don Goss from Los Angeles, jumped numerous hurdles to get to La Paz even after the hurricane! First tuna of the season!

Dorado like the one here with Mike Jennings have been rolling through in solid numbers, especially west of Cerralvo Island where easy limits have not been unusual!

The billfish have been restless since the storm and we had several days this past week where almost every one of our pangas hooked at least one sailfish. Most were released.

Geri Cammack with the kind of dorado that have been producing north of La Paz this past week. Except for this past weekend, weather has been some of the best of the season!

GETTING BACK ON TRACK!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Sept. 28-Oct. 5, 2014

For the last three weeks since Hurricane Odile, we’ve honestly had some of the best weather and condtions of the year! Blue skies…calm warm waters…very little wind. Just enough breeze to keep it comfortable.

But, as I’m writing this, we’re looking at Tropical Storm Simon that promises to drop a little rain on us for the next 4 days (Saturday to Monday) Doesn’t look like too much. Just enough to get us wet and hit us with some afternoon thunder and lightning. However, given how much we’ve already gotten hit in this El Nino year, I was kinda hoping that “enough-was-enough.”

Here in La Paz, and surely in many other places in southern Baja, especially the closer you get to Cabo, there’s alot of folks who lost their homes or they were heavily damaged. So, even a “little rain” only adds more misery to a situation that was under recovery.

By any stretch of the imagination, the recovery has been remarkable. The government and local authorities both public and private pulled out all the stops to get folks back on the grid as soon as possible. Much of the work has been done in record time although there are some folks only now getting back with power and water. But this is far ahead of predictions.

Most notably, the Cabo Airport which had been forecast as taking months to re-open, is now open as of Oct. 3rd with flights slowly starting to trickle in. Hotels and other tourist attractions are also making great strides.

As for the fishing, the great weather and conditions predicated some very good fishing these last few weeks. You could not have asked for better air and water! The only problem was that there weren’t many fishermen in town as there had been scores of cancelations, especially since there were no flights.

However, for those who were able to get on the water, dorado were most cooperative. These fish had not seen any traffic or pressure now for 3 weeks! They are hungry! Several days limits were easy and the anglers were catching and releasing fish as fast as they could go! On two days, our guys came back happily by noon with full fish boxes and “more than enough action for the day!”

Most of the fish were 10-15 pounds, but others in the 20-25 pound class were also found. Additionally, marlin and sailfish hooks-ups were also recorded. There’s an abundance of bonito out there so no shortage of action on light tackle. And, we also hooked a few wahoo around Cerralvo Island.

Maybe the most exciting ripple of news…Commercial guys got a few tuna that hit and moved off! Then, right at the end of the week, we hit a few football tuna ourselves. The biggest problem was getting through the voracious schools of bonito, but there are tuna signs everywhere. Several private boats as well as commercial guys report tuna in the 100 pound class coming through the areas and some of our diver friends reported diving and having schools of tuna flash through! This could be good! Standing by!
