James “Hawk” Davis, our amigo from La Ventana put the wood on this surprise yellowtin tuna estimated at about 80 pounds!

TV show host and actor, Rick Kasper on the beach at Bahia de Los Muertos. Rich had a nice day of dorado including these two and a few others.

Captain Favio was out with Sam from North Carolina and they stuck this beefy yellowtail from the island.

YELLOWTAIL YES…BUT TUNA IN FEBRUARY?

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Feb. 1-8, 2015

After two weeks of on-again-off-again funky weather that included both wind AND rain, we finally had a week where the clouds parted a bit and we got sunshine and calmer seas.

Accordingly, I’m not surprised that we got into a few more fish and had some better conditions. There was still some wind, but it was still better than it had been!

We had quite a variety and I guess the biggest news was the surprise jag of tuna found at the north end of Cerralvo Island. Commercial fishermen had been trickling reports to us of fast moving tuna now and then, often moving too fast to get on them, but we finally stuck one. James “Hawk” Davis our amigo, stuck a fish we estimate at perhaps 60 pounds dragging a Rapala. Now, normally, we don’t see tuna until maybe late spring or early summer and it’s too soon to call this a “tuna bite.” But, it’s darned exciting to see a good-grade ahi hit the deck! We’ll keep you posted.

Hawk got his fish on 40 pound test and his xRap30 was the mackerel pattern. According to Hawk, there’s yellowtail around in the shallow spots, but that’s the problem. Dragging deep running lures like the XRap30 means losing alot of expensive Rapalas in the rocks!

As for other species, there’s some slugger yellowtail also around the island with most fish running 20-30 pounds. A nice grade of hefty fish that can pull like crazy. This is the right time for more of them to show up.

In addition, talk about a buffet of species…we also have been getting into pargo…both the big mullet snapper (pargo liso) as well as the barred pargo mulatto that have the pretty orange and green bars on them. Fish have been 5-20 pounds which might not sound like much until you try putting the wood to one of these guys and try to pull him outta the rocks.

We also found schools of dorado…some smaller school-sized rooster fish…bonito and cabrilla for a nice mix of fish.

Conditions look like they’re going to hold so hopefully, we’ll get some better fishing reports coming up!

TAILHUNTER WHALE WATCHING TRIPS IN FULL SWING!

Our daily trips out to Bahia Magdalena for whale watching have been having some incredible times! Lots of whales in the water and it’s an amazing experience to get close to these incredible animals. They usually hang out in the area until about mid-March or so. Plenty of time to see them before they start their long journey north back to the Bering Sea by Alaska! CARNAVAL COMING TO TOWN!

It’s gonna be a full week of craziness and fun at Carnaval!

Several huge parades will be taking place on the waterfront and all the town will turn out to watch!

The best seats in the house to watch a parade are at Tailhunters!

Just a heads-up that the 2015 La Paz Carnavale kicks it off this week with the giant street fair…incredible concerts…huge parades…fireworks and food! The revelry starts on Feb. 12 and goes to the 17th! Alot of the action takes place right in front of our Tailhunter Restaurant on the malecon which is also the best seat on the waterfront to watch the parades!

Amy and Belmond Mann , have been friends and frequent visitors to see us in La Paz for many many years! Always great to have them visit us at the show with the family!

Don and Debbie White have been fishing with us for years! They’re coming again this April! But, they brought me some awesome fuzzy slippers to wear in the booth because they know I stand for 10-12 hours straight and my feet are killing me!

An incredible shout-out THANK YOU / MUCHAS GRACIAS to our own Rod Brown from Wrangell, Alaska. Not only did he come all the way down to Portland but he put together the most amazing photos book called, “Fishing with Jonathan and Jill” filled with pages and pages of some of the fantastic fish he and his family and friends have caught with us over the years! I’m going to keep this somewhere very special. We were honored to get such a thoughtful gift! Thanks, Rod!

We just finished one of our best shows of the year at the Portland Expo Center for the Northwest Sportsmans Show! It as off-the-charts! Solid wall-to-wall people for 5 days and we saw soooo many of our amigos who came to visit us at the booth! We had a blast and thank you for all of you who were so thoughtful to bring goodies and gifts. You’re the best. And a special shout-out to everyone who booked their 2015 La Paz fishing vacations as well!

We now head on down the road to our next stops Only this time, we do something different. Because of scheduling, Jill and I will split up!

Jill will head up to Yakima Washington and do the show there!

I’ll be in the football stadium at Phoenix doing the ISE show there!

Captain Armando busts a smile over the shoulder of Scott Burnham who trolled up this nice sierra fishing with our Tailhunter Fleet at Las Arenas.

We don’t see many of these, but take a look at the China Mero (Hawkfish) caught by Jeff Burnham. These are tasty fish we occasionally catch around rocky areas.

Jeff Burnham poses with another beautiful sierra. These fish are great eating and tough fighters but during the winter cooler months, they hang out around ridges and beach drop offs near shallow water.

ANOTHER CRAZY WINDY AND RAINY WEEK!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Jan. 25 – Feb. 1, 2015

Not a whole lot to report this past week. We had some crazy days of rain and drizzle and when it wasn’t wet, it was windy either on the front or backside of the storm cells that came through. It didn’t rain hard, but definitely, not great to be outside trying to get a tan. We normally have windy days during this time of year and it’s unusual for us to get rain, but nothing is “for sure” when it comes to weather.

The good side is that we don’t have alot of anglers this time of year and those that do, usually are not hardcore and wanting to fish every day. So, with flexible schedules we can ask them to wait until perhaps another day later in the week is better. That being said, we got some OK inshore action on sierra, bonito and jack crevalle. Not much in the way of bait but have been using baby bonito when we can get them.

We have been keeping an eye on what the commercial guys are doing since they are working any chance they can get out, unlike sports fishing. These guys gotta make a living. They tell me there’s yellowtail at the island and there’s also sardines and mackerel for bait.

The forecast for the coming week is looking pretty good. Nothing but sunshine mostly. Back to normal! It’s gonna be 75 to 80 degrees in the daytime and mid-50’s at night!

Whales are in full “come see us” mode out at Bahia Magdalena and we’re running daily whale watching trips right now.

PORTLAND SPORTMAN’S EXPO COMING UP THIS WEEK!

La Paz in the house. All the way up in Washington, Jeanne and Jeff Brown who own Big Left Turn Yacht Managment in La Paz and were up for the Seattle Boat Show. They stopped in at the Seattle Fairgrounds to say hi. Great to see them. Tom is La Paz’s biggest Seahawks fan at our Tailhunter Restaurant!

Barred pargo and cabrilla (Mexican seabass) like these two nice fish taken by the Montejano Brothers (Andy and Raphael) have been biting nicely inshore lately. Typical action for this time of year and tough to get outta the rocks. But GREAT eating!

Some fat sierra and schoolie dorado are were not uncommon this week. No roosterfish to show you because all the roosters were released!

The grey whales have arrived earlier than normal and are already in good numbers at Bahia Magdalena and we’re already running day trips to get on the water with them!

POST HOLIDAY BLUES

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Jan. 11-18, 2015

There weren’t that many fishermen around this week, either because there simply weren’t that many around or those that wanted to fish were kept off the water by pesky northern winds. But, this is typical of winter fishing in our area and frankly, it’s pretty common few weeks after Christmas not to have even many tourists in town. You could almost call La Paz “sleepy.” Even the locals are keeping it low key and under the radar, perhaps still recovering from the holidays. Stores, streets and restaurants are almost empty sometimes!

We did get a few folks out on the water with air temps in the mid-70’s and a bit choppy. Sierra were biting along the drop-off points where shallow water slopes into deeper areas like near the Las Arenas lighthouse and also in the channel areas where current move between rocky spot. As well, the sloping areas also produced jack crevalle and some pompano…both related plus their more popular cousin the rooster fish with some smaller school-sized fish that might have gone about 15 pounds.

Bonito were prevailant not to far from shore either and a few stray free-swimming dorado were hooked as well.

WHALES HAVE SHOWN UP EARLY IN BAHIA MAGDALENA!

Yes, please rub my head for me! We love getting our photo taken with visitors!

Normally, from about late January to late March, the grey whales take up residence at Bahia Magdalena where they spawn, breed and give birth. In these shallow warm waters, this is the end of the largest migration of mammals on earth as they come down from the Bering Sea near Alaska. We’ve started running daily trips to the Bay to spend a day getting close to these amazing gentle animals and it’s a great life-time experience for the whole family. From one of our favorite cities…DENVER…we just had an incredible time at the International Sportsman’s Expo at the Convention Center downtown. Thanks to everyone who came to visit us in our booth to say hi and talk about their past and future fishing adventures in La Paz. What a kick and we never tire of seeing everyone!

So now…we head to our 3rd show on the “road tour.” First was Sacramento. Now, we just finished Denver. This week we set up for the Washington Sportsmans Expo at the Puyallup Fairgrounds near Seattle, Washington! 2015 TAILHUNTER/ WESTERN OUTDOOR NEWS PANGA SLAM & JACKPOT IS FILLING!

Captain Jorge and Verda Boyd started off the first day of last year’s Panga Slam with a nice bull dorado taken just off the area of La Ventana.

Tim Farrell took a photo of a trophy rooster fishing with Captain Archangel during last year’s Panga Slam. Tim caught several nice fish and released the all!

We just announced the dates for our 2015 Panga Slam two weeks ago nd the response was incredible! Still some spots available. Dates are June 16-21 and is gonna be a blast with 3 days fishing / hotel/ several great parties and dinners and a big island snorkel party as well. All this personally hosted by Jill and myself and Executive Editor Pat McDonell from Western Outdoor News. It promises to be another great time. La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of January 4-11, 2015

The New Year is off to a good start! We had some nicer days on the water this week. Some breezy days, but overall, some good days to be on the water, all things considered. It’s just a nice time to be in town. Sunshine and 75 degree days and 60 degree nights and not many tourists in town almost make it a “sleepy seaside city.” It’s really one of my favorite times in Baja.

For the fishing, there were some surprises. We got the usual winter-fare of inshore specials including some pargo liso…running about 5-10 pounds. Cabrilla in the 3-4 pound class. Some surprisingly large sierra this year up to about 5 pounds and some good fun with 4-6 pound bonito.

However, surprisingly, we had some appearances of some species we normally don’t see this early in the year. For one, we had a few of our anglers tie into some pre-season rooster fish! Normally, we don’t see roosters until maybe late February or March so these were a nice bonus. The fish ran about 10-20 pounds and were taken around the Las Arenas lighthouse and Bahia de Los Muertos.

The other surprise was the showing of small school-sized dorado. Perhaps 10 pounders, but great eating and again, we don’t usually see them in May so perhaps this is a sign of some early mahi moving into the area.

By the way, word has it that our scouts are already seeing gray whales over at Bahia Magdalena! It seems they’re coming a tad early as well. This is a great opportunity to get about as close to one of these wonderful huge animals as humanly possible without getting into the water! We’ll be running trips until about late February or Mid-March when the whales start swimming north again But for now, this is the time when the whales arrive after the longest and largest migration of any animal on Earth all the way from the Bering Sea to spend time mating and birthing in the warm lagoons of the western Coast of Baja. We just wrapped up the first of our road shows with an explosively great fun 4 days at the California State Fairgrounds for the Sacramento ISE show! With over 650 vendors it was the largest fishing and hunting exhibit in the history of the Sacramento ISE and IT WAS PACKED! Thanks to all our amigos who came out to see us and say hi and to also set up their La Paz fishing adventure with us. We had a great time and also a big thank you to everyone who brought us so many goodies…everything from sushi to Chinese pork buns…wine…See’s candy…homemade cookies…homemade cheesecake…homemade carmel corn…gourmet chocolate…cheese…bread…pastries…champagne…you’re the best. Also a special shout-out to the Tim Campbell family (Better known as the TIM and PAULA BUTTERWORTH FAMILY…I screwed up dangit!) who put together a little ice chest travel pack for us on the road filled with gourmet cheese…baguettes…marinated mushrooms…candies…seafood spread…wine and more! La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Dec. 28, 2014 to Jan. 4, 2015

Happy New Year Everyone! Hope the new year is off to a good start for you!

We had another windy week here in La Paz, but about Wednesday it started to calm down and suddenly everyone wanted to go fishing! We put out more pangas in one day than we had in the two previous weeks combined! I guess everyone was waiting for those pesky north winds to settle down.

Anyway, we sure got quite a variety of fish. Nothing big, but for so many of our fishermen who are really in town for some sunshine and not necessarily hardcore anglers, there was some great action and fish to bring back for dinner. There’s alot of out-of-towners in La Paz right now for the holidays who are just trying to squeeze in an activity like snorkeling or diving or a day of fishing here-and-there.

So, for those who went out, we had cabrilla (sea bass) around 2-5 pounds. Smaller snapper and pargo of about the same size. Some really nice-sized sierra and some great bonito to bend the rods. Additionally, we had some surprise fish as well with some rooster fish caught and released that were going about 10-15 pounds; a few school-sized dorado; and even had a wahoo take down a lure, but regretfully come unbuckled. Oh well…

Still, great action and lots of fun without having to go out too far from shore or get bounced around out there in rough water. As the weekend came up the winds ramped up a bit and so did the fishing, but as you’re probably reading this, the winds have likely petered out and the seas are flat again. It’s going to be like this throughout the winter months which is pretty typical. It’s definitely chillier. I know many people will laugh, but our guys were complaining about the “cold water” which is now at 72 degrees!

The Tailhunter van has left the station and Jill and I are on the road and will be at the first of our “road shows” this week and for the next three months! First stop will be the International Sportsmans Expo at the California State Fairgrounds in Sacramento! This is a huge show and will run from Thursday to Sunday (January 8-11th). Pretty typical inshore winter catch of some great eating, pargo, snapper, cabrilla and triggerfish.

Incredible day trips right now to swim in La Paz Bay with the whalesharks in the shallow waters! On any given day there are up to several dozen 10-15 foot “juveniles” in the bay.

Above or under the water, these gentle animals are a fantastic experience. This is about a 20 footer, feeding on the surface in only about 10 feet of water!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Dec. 21-28, 2014

The weather was tough on us this week. Quite a few windy days as is often the case during the winter months when the north winds come down and hit us and just make it difficult to get out or, even if we do, it’s just rugged out there or, the big waves make it tough to get bait. And that’s the way it was for the majority of the week.

I feel badly because most of the folks that fish this time of year are snow-birds just enjoying sunshine who want a day of fishing while in La Paz. This is unlike during the regular season when folks fish every single day of their vacation and are specifically in town to fish. For the folks now with only one day to fish, that means we either have to cancel; or they have to just gut-it-out and have a rough day; or we have to juggle their fishing days to find a day where the winds are diminished.

More often than not, we either have to tell folks who only have one specific day to fish that it’s best they not go out, or they go out and really just have a bad time and get beat up and wet and not catch much fish…and that’s not fun either.

On the other side, at least it’s sunny! Day time temps are in the low to mid-70’s and really pleasant. Although it was windy, winds should calm down by the time you’re reading this.

We did get out a few times this week. All of our fishing during the winter months are out’ve Las Arenas/ Bahia de Los Muertos areas. Because of the winds, waters are pretty turned over and green and dirty in some of our hot spots. However, we did get into some decent sierra along the beach drop-offs. Some were hefty 4-5 pound chunkers and ALWAYS great eating. There were a few small pargo, snapper and cabrilla caught. We had some school-sized rooster fish caught and released and the bonito helped provide some action as well.

As a side note, many folks don’t know that La Paz has become quite a mecca for whalesharks which have been increasing in numbers the last few season in La Paz Bay where they’re protected. At times there are 1/2 dozen to several dozen “juveniles” up to 15 feet long or more all in shallow water and great for snorkeling! We’re running 2-3 hour trips to swim with the whalesharks every day that the winds are favorable. The juveniles are just a few minutes away and it’s an incredible family once-in-a-lifetime experience. You are NOT allowed to touch or ride the animals but still…getting just a few feet away from these gentle animals (they are true sharks with no teeth that eat plankton, krill and other small critters) is something not to be missed.

OUR YEAR IN REVIEW! BRING ON 2015!

Well, 2014 is almost one for the books and I thought it would good to wrap up the year with a full review…

It was as crazy a year as I have ever had in my almost 20 years working here in La Paz.

With El Nino hovering, we entered the year with some trepidation. El Nino seems to have a zillion variables that change the whole complexion of fishing and sure enough, it started right from the get-go.

El Nino conditions are characterized by warmer than normal waters. Good in some ways, but bad in so many others. So, crazily, our waters never really did cool down. We started the year catching dorado which was a great surprise in some aspects, but the downside was not so good.

For one our cooler water species never really did show up. While the dorado were biting, we never got into the good yellowtail or the amberjack, sierra or pargo that are so popular in our cooler months. We got a few, but it had to be called a big disappointment. One aspect of the overly-warm water was the lack of bait.

From Idaho taking a break from teaching school, Mandy Pollock let’s Tailhunter Capt. Boli struggle with this big yellowtail from the north side of La Paz. Still a few yellowtail around and this was Mandy’s first trip to La Paz.

Baitfish require cooler waters so that nutrients come from the deep. The baitfish feed on the nutrients and without those necessities, bait either died off or moved away to find food. Insofar as we’re a live bait fishery and bait is an important aspect of our sportfishing, it makes it hard to fish, let alone catch fish without bait! This was to plague us throughout the year.

It didn’t help either that in the Bay of La Paz, bait catchers from the fish farms were scooping up what little bait was available, sometimes at night leaving virtually nothing for the sportfishing fleets and commercial local fishermen who rely on the bait to make their livings. It wasn’t until almost mid-year that the bait catching stopped. Surprisingly, our bait stocks suddenly increased!

But, bait was to be an issue all year long. We made do with what we could get. That often consisted of a mix of sardines, mackerel, caballitos, baby bonito, ballyhoo and dead bait like cut squid, cut bonito and the like.

It will produced some great catches throughout the year like the dorado, marlin, sailfish and some others. The most remarkable catches of the year were the rooster fish and wahoo. We had an above average year for rooster fish underscoring La Paz’s reputation as the “Roosterfish Capital of the World” with fish in the 30-80 pound class not uncommon.

Captain Jorge and our buddy, Rick Kasper, always has the knack for big fish like this world-class huge roosterfish caught just off the shallow beach near the Las Arenas lighthouse then released.

From Louisiana, Brian Davis stuck his giant roosterfish with Captain Pancho that might have tipped the scales into the triple digits, but was gratefully released.

As for wahoo, the cycle came around this year. After a few years of negligible wahoo to show, we had a fairly outstanding year for wahoo with fish in the 30-50 pound class and larger often taken and the best spots around Espirito Santo Island. For folks who had never caught a wahoo or rooster, this was the kind of year where many anglers finally got their first of each species, sometimes on the same day.

Lots of amigos got their first wahoos this year like Rich Pomeroy from Northern California who was on his first trip to La Paz.

The biggest issue of our year was the weather. It played havoc all year.

As is characteristic of El Nino years, storms are more common and we gritted our teeth and watched hurricanes and rainstorms threaten us and sometimes drop some rain on us and stormy conditions. We have over a dozen come our way, but dodged almost all of them until the big one finally turned on us in a surprise of historic proportions.

Hurricane Odile slammed into Baja with winds up to 150 miles per hour. It turned out to be the biggest hurricane in Baja history causing widespread devastation. La Paz was in it’s path and, although the fury of the storm was spent in about 6 hours, the destruction and aftermath were felt for weeks and La Paz and Baja are still in the rebuilding process.

As far as fishing, we were back to fishing within a week of the storm. However, since airports were shut down or destroyed, there was no way for clients to come into Baja and hence suffered many weeks of cancelations and lost bookings during the part of the season which is traditionally the busiest time of the year. The ripple effect on much of the economy will take a long time to recover.

But interestingly, right after the hurricane, fishing took off! Some of the best fishing took place in the weeks and months post-Odile with dorado, wahoo, sailfish, marlin, and other species biting better than they had at any time of the year and with continued warm waters through Christmas, continued to bite!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of December 14-21, 2014

I think this is the slow-down before the holidays. I think the whole city is just in “mellow Christmas mode” right now. Everyone is excited about Christmas, but it’s just very “tranquil” (peaceful) right now. I think every place is like that right now no matter where you live…unless you’re hitting a shopping mall in the U.S.

Here in Mexico, Christmas season started well before the U.S. Thanksgiving. There’s no Thanksgiving holiday in Mexico so right about Halloween / All Souls Day/ Dia de Los Muertos stores start selling decorations, toys, etc. And people start buying and decorating and getting ready two months ahead of time. Homes have been decorated for weeks. Christmas trees have been up since the end of November (which means the live ones can be pretty dry by now!). Packages have been under the trees for weeks also.

If you’re just headed out to buy toys or decorations now, you’re pretty much out-of-luck! There’s not much to buy. I had trouble finding a string of white lights last week for some that burned out already at the Tailhunter Restaurant! I had to go to 5 stores to find any Christmas lights!

Anyway, not many visitors around either. Next week folks will come in for vacation, but many of them are snow-birds or folks just coming in for the holidays. Not many anglers around! It would be a good time to be on the water since there’s no pressure on the fish at all!

We only had a few anglers ourselves. The only ones out there, for the most part, are the commercial guys.

It was a little windy here and there and kinda bouncy and rough a few days, but that’s typical this time of year. As I’ve mentioned often, we are only fishing with our fleet at Las Arenas/ Bahia de Los Muertos because it’s calmer there and the fish are closer and there’s more variety. With our La Paz fleet, it’s just too rough many days and a long bumpy ride to the fishing grounds for erratic fishing.

But, at Muertos and around Cerralvo, we’re still getting a few dorado up to about 15 pounds. Nothing big, but decent action. There’s still a few roosters around to about 20 pounds. Mostly school-sized fish although someone did latch onto a fish estimated at double that size. They never saw the fish, but it was hooked right there in the “rooster zone” near the Arenas light house and slammed into the bait like a big rooster. The clients had never caught a rooster before and kinda fumbled around and lost the fish! Oh well. Everyone had a laugh.

There are still some great inshore stuff too. Sierra are becoming more abundant as the waters get cold and in the rocks, we got some decent cabrilla and small pargo.

Tracey and Brian Campbell tags small dorado 12-14

Tracey and Brian Campbell were originally supposed to visit us last September, but Hurricane Odile got in the way . They were able to visit us this past week and get in some scuba diving, snorkeling and even a few days of fishing. Day one produced some nice dorado for taking back to Maryland and for dinner at Tailhunter Restaurant!

Carlos Cota just went out for an hour. That’s all the time he had. We went just past the point in about 30 feet of water to catch a few snapper for dinner and ended up with this striped marlin instead. Just shows some of the crazy variety right now. They weren’t able to release the billfish.

Captain Jorge and Yolanda Wheeler, our amiga from Las Vegas got some HUGE sierra not too far offshore from Bahia de Los Muertos.

CRAZY MIX OF FISH STILL HAPPENING BUT COOLER CONDITIONS ARRIVE

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Dec. 7-14, 2014

This past week was much more characteristic of December fishing. We had a little wind. A little breeze, especially late in the day. Waters are turning cooler and so is the air temp, but the sun has been out all week and it’s a pleasant time to be in town. Not many folks are in town now so you have the waters and the town pretty much to yourselves.

For the fishing, it seemed like it was different from day-to-day and panga to panga. All of our fishing right now, is pretty much with our Las Arenas fleet, because the waters out of La Paz are more subject to the rougher waters and also greener waters not conducive to very good fishing.

But, for the bite, we’re still getting some nice wahoo…some billfish…and dorado. Plus rooster fish seem to pop up ever few days as well. The problem now is that it’s not consistent. I tell folks there’s a big difference every day. If the blue water fish aren’t biting then the inshore fish like sierra, pargo and cabrilla be come the target or, if the waters are bouncy or rough, there’s just no way to go too far out and you’re relegated to staying closer inshore fishing structure fish like the species mentioned.

The rub is that it’s hard to tell which fish will bite when. We do keep an eye on the winds and generally speaking if the winds are blowing from the north, then we’re gonna be fishing inshore and there’s not too much chance of blue water species. However, that being said, we DID hook a striped marlin this week less than 50 yards from shore in only about 30 feet of water and some of the dorado we hooked this week were close to shore as well!

Jesse had one day to squeeze in for fishing and made the most of it with a nice rack of dorado to put in the freezer. If he’s not smiling, it’s cuz he told me had had a wahoo estimated at 60 pounds all the way to the boat before it broke loose!

Yes! There’s crazy roosterfish still around. They started showing up about a month ago and have been running up to about 50 pounds! Brian Mee from Eastern Washington was fishing light tackle and shows off a great sampel of the kind of roosters we’re getting. This big boy was released!

Carlos Cifuentes had never been fishing before he tried a day on the water with our Tailhunter Capt. Armando fishing from Bahia de los Muertos! They got 4 nice dorado and lost several others prompting Carlos to laughing tell us, “My shoulders are so sore! I never caught fish before like this!”

Some of the wahoo we’re getting are just minutes from leaving the beach just around the corner from Bahia de Los Muertos. Captain Jorge put the guys into this fat ‘hoo!

Our gran amigo, Art Savedra, the famous “Captain Hook” was here working the Baja 1000 race but stayed a few extra days to get in some fishing and scuba. He’s here on the beach with Captain Armando and dinner!

DORADO STILL AROUND BUT OTHER SPECIES HELP OUT AS COOLER CONDITIONS COME IN!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Nov. 16-23, 2014

A bit windier this week with a few days that were really bouncy, but still overall really pleasant conditions. But, as we get closer to winter we’re going to see more winds and especially winds from the north. But, for that very reason is why we’re doing most of our fishing from Las Arenas right now since we can launch from the beach at Bahia de Los Muertos where we’re a bit more protected from the winds and it’s also easier since the fishing is much closer…like RIGHT THERE!

I’m not kidding. We’re getting a variety of fish within minutes of where we launch. The bay itself is holding some decent rooster fish up to about 40 pounds. By the northern point of rocks, there’s jack crevalle and cabrilla. As soon as you pass the point, drop the lures and there’s always the possibility of wahoo literally within a hundred yards of the rocks! Go south or just outside to the buoys and you can hit dorado.

Anywhere in between, there’s also the chance of more wahoo, billfish (sails mostly), pargo, and bonito. Great variety and in between these gusty days, conditions are about as pleasant as you could want with air temps in the low 80’s and water temps just about the same. Just be flexible on your fishing days, if you can, in case the day you want to go out looks like the wind is going to kick in.

Keep an eye out as well. There’s so much sea life out there. Schools of dolphin…sea turtles…whalesharks…blue whales…manta rays. Pretty incredible time to be in La Paz!

We just wanted to take the time to wish you and your family a very peaceful and happy Thanksgiving. We’ve had a crazy tumultuous year here in La Paz. Mother Nature did what Mother Nature does and not much to be done about it except roll with it and try to keep smiling. Crazy El Nino year affected the fishing. Storms and hurricanes. Winds and heat…we pretty much had it all. But, through it all, so many of you kept us smiling and laughing and remembering how very blessed we are to even be here. Thanks for your support. Touch all the bases! Talk about “grand slamming” Rafi Achmetov from Virginia and Arlan Schmitz (New Mexico), flank Captain Jorge with three nice catches! They had barely left the beach at Muertos when the big wahoo hit. They got that in the boat and got hit by the dorado then topped it off with a roosterfish (not able to release). Great example of some of the variety right now.

Whoa! That’s a fat wahoo for Virgil Redwine and Bob Donahue! The duo had some kind of week with us! They used conventional tackle for the wahoo but with the flyrod, they got numerous dorado, jack crevalle, roosterfish and other species!

After a week of fishing in Cabo, Randy Matz and Barbara Morris from Coalinga CA came north to do a bit of panga fishing with us. They show off some of their catch…a trophy-sized pompano and a dorado.

Catch of the week for Marty Koschnitzke! He and his girlfriend, Belle, got a couple handfuls of dorado with Captain Armando, then he proposed to Belle on the beach back in La Paz and she said, “Yes!” Congratulations to them both!

Surprising roosterfish bite for so late in the year! Virgil Redwine caught and released over a dozen roosters many on the flyrod. The roosterfish have been very good to us the last few weeks!

They were able to squeeze in one day of fishing and Joe Cisneros and his bud, Carlos Rojas from San Diego turned in a nice day…they got this fat wahoo and lost two others at the boat!

Mike Carter who lives in Pescadero just south of La Paz put the hurt on some dorado plus this nice pair of tasty pompano. These are fish we normally don’t see until the springtime.

Another cold-water fish that showed up lately indicative of the changing season…sierra! Captain Pancho poses with Brian Mee from eastern Washington and this speedy sierra!

A rare catch! It’s a mutant cabrilla (seabass) that we call a “Baja Grouper” or “Golden Grouper” that we catch now and then. Captain Archangel seems a bit distressed, but he’s one of our best at catching reef species!

Virgil Redwine and Bob Donahue had a great week….wahoo…dorado…sierra…roosterfish…jack crevalle…roosterfish…They released most of their fish too!

SOLID FISHING – CRAZY WAHOO – VARIETY!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Nov. 9-16, 2014

Perfect conditions…willing fish…lots of variety…light traffic…a nice action week of fishing!

Our anglers this past week probably could not have asked for better conditions that we often get at this time of the year. There can be days as we transition from warmer to colder conditions where the winds blow strong and cool and it gets a bit choppy. We’ll see more of those kinds of days as we get closer to December, but this past week wasn’t one of them as the season winds down.

This time of year, we get fewer fishermen and more folks simply escaping for a few days in the sunshine from colder areas or here for the holidays. So, if this is truly the end of our fishing “rush” for the season, it’s closing with a bang!

There were incredible varieties this week. Bottom fish. Topwater fish. Bluewater game fish. Warm water fish. Cold water fish. Trophy fish. They pretty much all game to the party in one way, shape or form. Some days were better than others. Some boats did better than others. But the whole week…taken in totality… provided some excellent action, especially if the anglers fished more than one day. Our conventional anglers did great. Our light tackle folks did great. Some of our BEST fishing was had by our flyfishermen…after a season that was really tough on flyfishing!

I’m not sure where to start.

For one thing, I’m pretty convinced now that our La Paz side fishing is headed into winter condtions. Fishing for La Paz has been pretty inconsistent as waters cool down. There’s still some dorado, but it’s erratic. For that reason, most of our fishermen are fishing with our Tailhunter Las Arenas fleet. Waters seem to be holding warmer and, even on the breezy days, fishing is closer to shower and there’s no arguing with the variety. Everyone is getting fish every day. I would say the anglers who go for the “home run” fish and chase the big trophy fish are most likely to be at the whims of nature, the fish and luck, while the anglers who “go with the flow” and chase whatever is biting have had the better success.

The majority of the fish were dorado. Nothing huge, but fun 10-20 pounders were common. Great for the first-timers, light tackle and the flyfishers. We also had bonito, jack crevalle and schools of sierra and incredibly surprising numbers of rooster fish show up that all meant great bent rod action plus a few sailfish hooked and lost. We also got a few nice wahoo off that high spot at the south end of Cerralvo Island. Incredibly, some of our wahoo were being caught right against the rocks just outside of Bahia de Los Muertos just a few minutes off the beach.

On the bottom and off the reefs and rocks, we saw amberjack for the first time. None of the huge ones, but 10-20 pound amberjack are a fun size and great eating at that size. Plus dog-tooth cubera snapper (pargo), barred pargo, yellow snapper and cabrilla (Mexican sea bass) in varying sizes up to the larger 15 pound pargo.

It was the kind of week that you almost never knew what you were going to catch. It really feels like we’re right on the brink of things changing over. I don’t know how much longer this kind of fishing will continue. It could change by the time you’re reading this. We’re right on the brink. It just has that “feel” as I watch the waters, the winds and the air temperatures every day. However, with this “El Nino” season, there’s just no telling and I’ve been wrong all season! So, until things change, we’ll continue to ride the wave and enjoy the bite!
