yellowtail pargo snapper triggers sierra tags

There’s a variety of fish that came up this week. Red snapper…yellowtail…sierra…and yes triggerfish. All great eating fish.

Our whaelwatching tours are in full swing and the whales are being incredibly cooperative! Kevin Kennedy and his group got the full experience in the calm waters of Mag Bay. Not sure how much longer these amazing animals will be here, but normally, they’re around until mid-March or so! Contact us and we’ll set you up!

We say good-bye to a fantastic La Paz Carnaval . Many watched the parades from our Tailhunter Restaurant and had a great time.

OK WEATHER GOES WITH OK FISHING!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Feb. 15-22, 2015

Good week for weather and fishing this past week…relatively speaking! I mean, it’s still winter so there were some breezy days, but compared to other weeks, the conditions were much more fishable and given that many of the folks in town are snow birds just wanting to get warm (especially those trying to thaw out from the east coast of the U.S, not too many folks are complaining about 83 degree days.

The fishing was predictable. With good weather, we’re able to get into more species and more variety to the fishing as well.

Among the larger species, some yellowtail popped up off Cerralvo Island including some nicer grades of fish in the 20-30 pound class. Some nice horses. Bait hasn’t been good as far as the mackerel are concerned which is what the yellows really charge, but using iron and heavier jigs (of course losing stuff in the rocks), scrambled egg and blue/white patterns produced fish. Also slow trolling mackerel-patterned crank baits like the bigger Rapala xRap 20’s and Yo-Zuri’s in blue and grey got hits as well.

Also, given it’s only February, I was nicely surprised by the rooster fish we got this week. Nothing big but fun-sized 5-10 pounders are great on light tackle, especially so close to shore. Normally, we tend to see these fish about a month later.

Same with the dorado. Again, nothing gigantic, but good-sating sized 6-12 pound “doraditos” again made for some good light tackle action. Just like the roosters, I wouldn’t expect the mahi to be in so early in the year.

More typical were the other species we caught. Especially, the inshore types. This included snapper and pargo, some decent 10-pound cabrilla and sierra along some of the beach drop offs.

The coming week’s weather is looking pretty good so hopefully better fishing reports next week. Truthfully, this time of the year, there aren’t that many fishermen in town, but everyone is hooking up and getting good variety.

WHAT A WEEK ON THE ROAD!

Once again…had a BLAST rocking the booth in the Phoenix University Football Stadium. Hard to believe the Super Bowl was played there two weeks ago!

Due to scheduling, Jill and I split up this week on our Tailhunter show tour. Jill went up to Yakima, Washington for the Central Washington Sportsmans Show. I was further south at the International Sportsman Show in Phoenix. We both had a great week and it was great seeing so many new and old amigos! Thanks to everyone for coming and visiting us and for those of you who booked trips to come see us this year in La Paz, we’re looking forward to seeing you again later this year!

We now move off to Southern California to set up for the massive Long Beach Fred Hall Fishing and Hunting Show at the Long Beach Convention Center March 4-8. Once again, we split up! Jill goes north to the Idaho Sportman’s Show at the fairgrounds in Boise, Idaho! If you’re going to be anywhere near these venues come out to see us and say hi!

From Napa and only time for one day of fishing, here’s NIck Clark and his girlfriend Jackie. I was a bit worried because of prediciions of wind and rain, but they did OK…several roosters released…a wahoo lost…two small dorado…some bonito….a red pargo and a cabrilla! Not too bad at all! It’s hard to tell, but if you look closely at Jackie’s left hand…NICK got the best catch of all…HE ASKED JACKIE TO MARRY HIM! Apparently, she said YES!!!

Using yo-yo iron, commercial guys around Cerralvo Island are hooking some nice 20 pound class yellowtail. Hopefully, this week we can get some of our sports anglers on the fish. Thanks to Hawk for the photo!

LA PAZ CARNAVAL 2015 is in full -swing this week! Everyone is out partying on the waterfront with lots of parades, floats, dancing, concerts, food and fun! Carnaval goes until FAT TUESDAY Feb. 17th. Great time to be in town.

FISHING MIXED BUT LOTS GOING ON IN LA PAZ!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Feb. 8-15, 2015

Relatively speaking…Not much to report this week. We had a bit of wind which is characteristic of this time of year. Also, there’s more folks in town for whale watching and the big week-long Carnavale than for fishing so everyone was having fun, nevertheless.

The folks that did go out, many were first-timers just looking for some sunshine and a day out on the water regardless of action so, in cases like that, best to keep close and have some fun and catch fish. The results were enjoyably predictable with cabrilla and bonito up to about 5 pounds. Good action on some schools of tough jack crevalle up to about 10 pounds. Some pargo including some larger ones busted off in the rocks plus sierra along the beaches. All great eating fish.

But, not to be discouraged, we did have two wahoo come off and several roosterfish were released so there’s alot of variety in the water and decent action!

The tuna bite we were hoping for, never really materialized although the commercial guys say there’s some fast-movers running with the dolphin schools outside Cerralvo Island or momentarily popping up at the drop-offs in deeper water then heading back down before anyone can get to them. Encouragingly, more yellowtail are showing up on the commercial boats using heavier iron as not much bait is around. But those guys go out no matter the conditions and it’s often a bit too rough to put first-timers out there and make the run on a sketchy bite. This week, we’ve got some better experienced anglers coming out so hopefully some better results on the more quality fish.

The whale watching is really where everyone is these past few weeks. The whales over at Bahia Magdalena have been incredible. The folks we’ve been sending over have been having a kick getting up close to these amazing animals in the calm waters of the bay and the whales and the new calves have shown no hesitancy to come right up and check out the funny-looking creatures in the pangas that can’t stop laughing.

Also, this week since Feb. 12th and continuing to the 17th, La Paz has been in full-turbo CARNAVAL mode with the city in quite the party mood with parades, booths, lots of food, giant concerts and pretty much shutting down the whole waterfront area in a giant street fair every day and night. Great time to be in town!

JONATHAN and JILL SPLIT UP!

Not really per se! But our Tailhunter 2015 Road Tour hits a fork in the road!

Jilly and I have been on the road now since just after Christmas and have had some incredible shows in Sacramento, Denver, Puyallup (Seattle), and most recently in Portland at all the big fishing and hunting shows telling folks about fishing with us in La Paz. What an amazing time we’re having and the bookings have been off-the-charts and it’s so great to see so many old friends along the trail!

Well, as the schedule would have it Jill and I have to split up this week. Jill heads for the show in YAKIMA, WASHINGTON at the SUN DOME there at the Yakima Fairgrounds.

Jonathan goes to the other big show in PHOENIX, ARIZONA at the UNIVERSITY of PHOENIX STADIUM where the NFL Cardinals play and we just had the SUPER BOWL!

We hate to split up, but it’s the way the schedule worked out and we surely don’t want to miss either show and seeing our amigos in both locations. So, if you’re anywhere in the area, come by and say hi and talk to us about coming to visit us this year and go fishing in La Paz! Hope to see you this week!

She’s one of the best! Donna Thompson gets our first yellowtail of the season putting the wood to two nice yellowtail off Cerralvo Island with live bait.

Two more of our super amigos…from Bakersfield, California…Ken Gragg and Carl Lange put a handful of pargo and a cabrila in the boat fishing just outside of Bahia de los Muertos. These are tough fish to pull out’ve the rocks!

Captain Jorge and Richard Branson from Virgin Airlines? Nope…it’s our amigo, Rick Kasper who actually has been a double for Branson, but as an actor and host of his own outdoor TV show has also been a double for Gary Bussey. He’s also a fun fisherman! He’s showing off a dorado and a sierra here although they let a few get away!

YELLOWTAIL AND PARGO MAKE A SHOWING…SO DOES DRIZZLE AND RAIN!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Jan. 18-25, 2015

The week started on some real high notes. Not only did we have some really fishing-condusive weather, but the fish decided to join in as well. However, as the week progressed, by the end of the week, not only did winter winds return, but we also got the surprise of rain which dampened things a bit. Fortunately, being the off-season, we didn’t have to cancel anyone’s fishing trips as they weren’t many folks fishing this week anyway.

However, let’s talk about fishing. The best news is that we finally got into yellowtail. The big fork tail jacks really laid low last year when El Nino conditions warmed the waters and made bait and the big fish a rarity. However, this week we took some nice quality-grade yellows around Cerralvo Island near the high spots both north and south ends with bait and iron with fish going 20-30 pounds. Some hefty hamachi! Hopefully, this is just the start of things to come.

The yellowtail require the cooler waters and normally, we don’t see many until about February or March. They stick around until about May when the waters start warming and we see the warm water species like dorado, billfish and wahoo move in. We barely had any yellowtail to speak of at all last year. We’re hopeful that the yellowtail we saw this week are the vanguard of a nice yellowtail season.

Another fish we really didn’t see last year were the pargo…the big snapper that come up in the springtime just like the yellowtail. These big red/ copper fish are powerful and in the spring come into the shallows to spawn. One of the most vicious fish to tangle with and a real frustrating game fish to put in the boat because of their power and the rock cover they love, we got a few of those this week as well. Most of the big ones get lost because they’re just rugged sluggers, but early in the week some 3-8 pounders came up (a good sized one is 15…a brute is 40!) so, like the yellowtail maybe this year we’ll get them back.

In addition to the yellowtail and the pargo, there were some dorado and sierra taken plus cabrilla.

Then, the wind came back up again from the north and as the weekend approached, skies got cloudy and a few days of rain hit us. As I’m writing this, we’re still looking at rain then it will let up next week and the forecast calls for some rain late in the week again as the month ends.

WHALES WATCHING ON BAHIA MAGDALENA GOING FULL

If you want to really do one of those “once-in-a-lifetime” things or check something off your “bucket list” our Bahia Magdalena Whale Watching is in full swing. The grey whales have come down from the Bering Sea in the longest migration of any animal on the planet. They showed up a bit early this year and we’re running daily trips to see them. They usually stay around until about mid-March and the bay is where they come to mate, give birth and basically hang out in the warm calm waters where we can get up close to them in their natural environment. Just a shout-out thank you to all our amigos who came to visit us at the Washington Sportsmans Show at the Seattle Fairgrounds in Puyallup, Washington. After shows in Sacramento and Denver and about 3,000 miles of driving, this was our third show of the year and it was a great time. We saw so many of our friends and signed up lots of amigos for their 2015 fishing trips with Tailhunters in 2015. We now have a few days to catch up and re-group then hit our next show in Portland at the Portland Expo Center from Feb. 4th to 8th. Barred pargo and cabrilla (Mexican seabass) like these two nice fish taken by the Montejano Brothers (Andy and Raphael) have been biting nicely inshore lately. Typical action for this time of year and tough to get outta the rocks. But GREAT eating!

Some fat sierra and schoolie dorado are were not uncommon this week. No roosterfish to show you because all the roosters were released!

The grey whales have arrived earlier than normal and are already in good numbers at Bahia Magdalena and we’re already running day trips to get on the water with them!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Jan. 11-18, 2015

There weren’t that many fishermen around this week, either because there simply weren’t that many around or those that wanted to fish were kept off the water by pesky northern winds. But, this is typical of winter fishing in our area and frankly, it’s pretty common few weeks after Christmas not to have even many tourists in town. You could almost call La Paz “sleepy.” Even the locals are keeping it low key and under the radar, perhaps still recovering from the holidays. Stores, streets and restaurants are almost empty sometimes!

We did get a few folks out on the water with air temps in the mid-70’s and a bit choppy. Sierra were biting along the drop-off points where shallow water slopes into deeper areas like near the Las Arenas lighthouse and also in the channel areas where current move between rocky spot. As well, the sloping areas also produced jack crevalle and some pompano…both related plus their more popular cousin the rooster fish with some smaller school-sized fish that might have gone about 15 pounds.

Bonito were prevailant not to far from shore either and a few stray free-swimming dorado were hooked as well.

WHALES HAVE SHOWN UP EARLY IN BAHIA MAGDALENA!

Normally, from about late January to late March, the grey whales take up residence at Bahia Magdalena where they spawn, breed and give birth. In these shallow warm waters, this is the end of the largest migration of mammals on earth as they come down from the Bering Sea near Alaska. We’ve started running daily trips to the Bay to spend a day getting close to these amazing gentle animals and it’s a great life-time experience for the whole family. 2015 TAILHUNTER/ WESTERN OUTDOOR NEWS PANGA SLAM & JACKPOT IS FILLING!

Captain Jorge and Verda Boyd started off the first day of last year’s Panga Slam with a nice bull dorado taken just off the area of La Ventana.

Tim Farrell took a photo of a trophy rooster fishing with Captain Archangel during last year’s Panga Slam. Tim caught several nice fish and released the all!

Pretty typical inshore winter catch of some great eating, pargo, snapper, cabrilla and triggerfish.

Incredible day trips right now to swim in La Paz Bay with the whalesharks in the shallow waters! On any given day there are up to several dozen 10-15 foot “juveniles” in the bay.

Above or under the water, these gentle animals are a fantastic experience. This is about a 20 footer, feeding on the surface in only about 10 feet of water!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Dec. 21-28, 2014

The weather was tough on us this week. Quite a few windy days as is often the case during the winter months when the north winds come down and hit us and just make it difficult to get out or, even if we do, it’s just rugged out there or, the big waves make it tough to get bait. And that’s the way it was for the majority of the week.

I feel badly because most of the folks that fish this time of year are snow-birds just enjoying sunshine who want a day of fishing while in La Paz. This is unlike during the regular season when folks fish every single day of their vacation and are specifically in town to fish. For the folks now with only one day to fish, that means we either have to cancel; or they have to just gut-it-out and have a rough day; or we have to juggle their fishing days to find a day where the winds are diminished.

More often than not, we either have to tell folks who only have one specific day to fish that it’s best they not go out, or they go out and really just have a bad time and get beat up and wet and not catch much fish…and that’s not fun either.

On the other side, at least it’s sunny! Day time temps are in the low to mid-70’s and really pleasant. Although it was windy, winds should calm down by the time you’re reading this.

We did get out a few times this week. All of our fishing during the winter months are out’ve Las Arenas/ Bahia de Los Muertos areas. Because of the winds, waters are pretty turned over and green and dirty in some of our hot spots. However, we did get into some decent sierra along the beach drop-offs. Some were hefty 4-5 pound chunkers and ALWAYS great eating. There were a few small pargo, snapper and cabrilla caught. We had some school-sized rooster fish caught and released and the bonito helped provide some action as well.

As a side note, many folks don’t know that La Paz has become quite a mecca for whalesharks which have been increasing in numbers the last few season in La Paz Bay where they’re protected. At times there are 1/2 dozen to several dozen “juveniles” up to 15 feet long or more all in shallow water and great for snorkeling! We’re running 2-3 hour trips to swim with the whalesharks every day that the winds are favorable. The juveniles are just a few minutes away and it’s an incredible family once-in-a-lifetime experience. You are NOT allowed to touch or ride the animals but still…getting just a few feet away from these gentle animals (they are true sharks with no teeth that eat plankton, krill and other small critters) is something not to be missed.

OUR YEAR IN REVIEW! BRING ON 2015!

Well, 2014 is almost one for the books and I thought it would good to wrap up the year with a full review…

It was as crazy a year as I have ever had in my almost 20 years working here in La Paz.

With El Nino hovering, we entered the year with some trepidation. El Nino seems to have a zillion variables that change the whole complexion of fishing and sure enough, it started right from the get-go.

El Nino conditions are characterized by warmer than normal waters. Good in some ways, but bad in so many others. So, crazily, our waters never really did cool down. We started the year catching dorado which was a great surprise in some aspects, but the downside was not so good.

For one our cooler water species never really did show up. While the dorado were biting, we never got into the good yellowtail or the amberjack, sierra or pargo that are so popular in our cooler months. We got a few, but it had to be called a big disappointment. One aspect of the overly-warm water was the lack of bait.

From Idaho taking a break from teaching school, Mandy Pollock let’s Tailhunter Capt. Boli struggle with this big yellowtail from the north side of La Paz. Still a few yellowtail around and this was Mandy’s first trip to La Paz.

Baitfish require cooler waters so that nutrients come from the deep. The baitfish feed on the nutrients and without those necessities, bait either died off or moved away to find food. Insofar as we’re a live bait fishery and bait is an important aspect of our sportfishing, it makes it hard to fish, let alone catch fish without bait! This was to plague us throughout the year.

It didn’t help either that in the Bay of La Paz, bait catchers from the fish farms were scooping up what little bait was available, sometimes at night leaving virtually nothing for the sportfishing fleets and commercial local fishermen who rely on the bait to make their livings. It wasn’t until almost mid-year that the bait catching stopped. Surprisingly, our bait stocks suddenly increased!

But, bait was to be an issue all year long. We made do with what we could get. That often consisted of a mix of sardines, mackerel, caballitos, baby bonito, ballyhoo and dead bait like cut squid, cut bonito and the like.

It will produced some great catches throughout the year like the dorado, marlin, sailfish and some others. The most remarkable catches of the year were the rooster fish and wahoo. We had an above average year for rooster fish underscoring La Paz’s reputation as the “Roosterfish Capital of the World” with fish in the 30-80 pound class not uncommon.

Captain Jorge and our buddy, Rick Kasper, always has the knack for big fish like this world-class huge roosterfish caught just off the shallow beach near the Las Arenas lighthouse then released.

From Louisiana, Brian Davis stuck his giant roosterfish with Captain Pancho that might have tipped the scales into the triple digits, but was gratefully released.

As for wahoo, the cycle came around this year. After a few years of negligible wahoo to show, we had a fairly outstanding year for wahoo with fish in the 30-50 pound class and larger often taken and the best spots around Espirito Santo Island. For folks who had never caught a wahoo or rooster, this was the kind of year where many anglers finally got their first of each species, sometimes on the same day.

Lots of amigos got their first wahoos this year like Rich Pomeroy from Northern California who was on his first trip to La Paz.

The biggest issue of our year was the weather. It played havoc all year.

As is characteristic of El Nino years, storms are more common and we gritted our teeth and watched hurricanes and rainstorms threaten us and sometimes drop some rain on us and stormy conditions. We have over a dozen come our way, but dodged almost all of them until the big one finally turned on us in a surprise of historic proportions.

Hurricane Odile slammed into Baja with winds up to 150 miles per hour. It turned out to be the biggest hurricane in Baja history causing widespread devastation. La Paz was in it’s path and, although the fury of the storm was spent in about 6 hours, the destruction and aftermath were felt for weeks and La Paz and Baja are still in the rebuilding process.

As far as fishing, we were back to fishing within a week of the storm. However, since airports were shut down or destroyed, there was no way for clients to come into Baja and hence suffered many weeks of cancelations and lost bookings during the part of the season which is traditionally the busiest time of the year. The ripple effect on much of the economy will take a long time to recover.

But interestingly, right after the hurricane, fishing took off! Some of the best fishing took place in the weeks and months post-Odile with dorado, wahoo, sailfish, marlin, and other species biting better than they had at any time of the year and with continued warm waters through Christmas, continued to bite!

FOOTBALL SEASON FINALLY? The football-sized yellowfin tuna finally made an appearance for the year. There weren’t many of them, but the sprinkling of fish were a nice surprise the last two weeks like this one by Steve Snead from Boise Idaho, who had a great week. He’s here with Captain Pancho.

Louie Sanchez, was not going to be denied his Baja trip to celebrate his 50th birthday and anniversary with his wife and family. After the hurricane, they jumped through all kinds of hoops to get down from home and Denver and got in some OK dorado fishing.

Steve Snead had a great story. He finally got his marlin off the bucket list. He was already hurting from a bad back, then tied into this gorgeous 150-pound class striped marlin. On light tackle, Steve and his back battled the first for 45 tough minutes. He got the fish out just long enough to take a picture then released it swimming strong. He came back to shore and went bed with a big smile but completely whupped.

She’s a champ! Young Sierra Sanchez is only 8-years-old, but was quite a trooper coming down to La Paz and fishing for the first time. The youngster is from the Denver, Colorado area and shows off her first dorado proudly with Captain Joel.

Determined to make it down, Steve Walker from idaho and his amigo, flew into Loreto then took our 5-hour shuttle to La Paz to make sure not to miss their fishing trip! Steve’s got a nice big bull on the gaff here that he caught north of La Paz.

I don’t know how he stays so clean fishing in all white clothes all day! But, Chris Malley had a pretty good week including these two yellowfun tuna he caught off Bahia de Los Muertos!

Don Busse and his gang…Ken Campbell…Jeremy Frieze…John Gibbs…Jim Adair…Brad Baker…Angelo Oliverio…and Chris Malley…brought in several hundred pounds of supplies and clothes for Jill’s hurricane relief efforts! it filled several duffle bags and ice chests! Since the hurricane, Jill has collected over 400 pounds of things for needy folks post-Odile.

Wiley Randolph from Fullerton CA…another big heart ….and a great shopper…brought down brand new kids’ shoes, schools supplies and medical first aid things for Jill’s hurricane relief efforts.

Jill, Cortez, Sierra and Louie Flores…all the way from Denver for the week and stuffed their bags with clothes, schools supplies and other great stuff for the hurricane relief. Big smiles and big hearts. Thanks to a wonderful family.

AIRPORTS OPEN – FISHERMEN COMING BACK – SO ARE THE FISH!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Oct. 5-12, 2014

Since hurricane Odile, three weeks ago, we’ve played cat-and-mouse with some erratic weather that seems to keep popping up and dropping some thundershowers on us now and then. Mostly, it’s been great weather, but like the rest of the season, we do have to keep watching the weather reports and the horizon to check for building thunderheads.

However, for the first time since as long as I can remember, I’m looking at the weather forecasts the last few days and into the next few weeks and there’s zero precipitation forecast. There are no little “weather icons” on the internet with little clouds and thunderbolts or rain icons on top of the daily advisories! We’ve got gorgeous 95 degree sunny weather for days and fishing conditions could not be better.

As for the fishing, it’s making a comeback.

The fish got hit pretty hard too with the crazy weather and green dirty water really mixed it up from the storms and the run-off and it takes times to settle in. Each week, the water seems to get a little better.

Fishing isn’t great, but it’s good most days and there’s even some jags of “very good” thrown in.

LA PAZ FISHING

Dorado have been the most consistent players, especially for our Tailhunter La Paz fleet. There are spots of dorado just inside La Paz Bay and in various places around Espirito Santo Island, but the best concentration and larger fish are around the Rosario / Las Cruces area in the channel between La Paz peninsula and Cerralvo Island. Fish aren’t bit, but they’re fun decent fish of 10-20 pounds with an occasional 30 pounder. Some days are better than others. Some boats will get limits some days while others right next to them will hit only a handful of fish or less. But, the fish are there!

Likewise, there seems to be a nice bit of marlin and sailfish around right now. Most have been caught incidentally while fishing for other species, but we’ve been hooking them all last week. Not alot, but every day is different. We had one day where almost every one of our pangas hooked at least one billfish. The next day there were only 2 hooked. Next day nothing. Day after that there were 4. All fish either broke off or were released except one which was kept and donated.

As a little sidebar, we had 2 wahoo hooked and cut off as well this week.

Late update: Got some wahoo late Saturday off Espirito Santo Island!

LAS ARENAS

This area has been a bit of a puzzle this past week. The biggest news is that we got our first football yellowfin tuna in a long long time. There’s some spots of tuna that keep popping up around Cerralvo Island with some fish up to 100-pound reported by commercial fishermen.

The bad news is that we only got about a dozen footballs all week that went 12-20 pounds. That’s it. There are so many bonito around that you catch about 20 bonito to get one tuna…if at all. I mean, it’s alot of fun and alot of action. But, if you’re looking for some good ahi meat to take home, it’s alot of energy. Still, it’s nice to have the tuna around!

The other downside is that if you spend the better part of your day chasing tuna, you won’t get much else. So, the counts have not been real good for our Tailhunter Las Arenas fleet. When they DO chase other species, there’s dorado around and the pangas will get 2-8 fish hooked up per day and the counts differ. It all depends if the guys went after the tuna or not.

So, what alot of our guys are doing is getting their dorado and ice chests filled by fishing La Paz, then specifically going for tuna with our other Tailhunter Fleet at Las Arenas. Seems to work out OK.

Last minute update: Five wahoo taken on two pangas late Sunday up to 50 pounds!

HURRICANE UPDATES

We’re up an running. Airports are open. Flights are in. The Los Cabos Airport officially opened months earlier than anticipated on Oct. 3rd and welcomed their first flights on United and Alaska on Oct. 8th with mariachi bands and water cannon salutes! Other airlines are coming online. La Paz and Loreto Airports have been open for several weeks. Still doing some cleanup in the streets and to some businesses and homes, but the heavy work is mostly done and most things are running like normal. Most visitors would never even know anything happened! Come fishing!

With a big heave…Randy Payne hefts up a solid beast of a bull dorado in front of the Las Cruces area fishing with our Tailhunter La Paz fleet in an area that produce some of the better quality dorado this past week!

Brennan Lowery from Los Angeles shows off one of his big bulls he got while posing on the beach at Balandra Bay. He and his dad had an epic day with multiple hookups!

She’s a trooper! Kris Brownlee from Rock Springs, Wyoming gets seasick, but that never stops here from always bringing the smiles and getting into the fish no matter how she feels. Captain Jorge from our Las Arenas fleet gives her a big thumbs-up for this trophy roosterfish caught just south of Bahia de Los Muertos on a day when all our pangas got into the roosters and ALL OF THEM WERE RELEASED! Congrats to Kris!

Captain Rogelio “Jolly Roger” gives a hand to first-timer Jessica Reeve visiting us from Wyoming who got this sailfish pretty much right in La Paz Bay! Attempts to release the fish were not successful. The sailfish have been feeding on the small dorado in the bay.

He’s got the cool hat and the nice fish! Luke Brownlee from Wyoming fished with us the whole week and our amigo got some nice fish like this as well as roosters and had some shots at billfish as well.

Check out the colors on Mike Menasco’s fish! Every now and then we get these gorgeous blue-colored bull dorado. He was fishing just off El Rosario when he nailed this bull.

DORADO SHARE STAGE WITH BILLFISH AND ROOSTERS!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of July 27-Aug. 3, 2014

For once, we had a fairly consistent week of fishing. No big storms. No surprise rainfall. No big winds. It all made a difference even tho’ we did keep an eye on Hurricane Hernan which stayed far away and fortunately didn’t affect us in La Paz. So, we had a good week of fishing overall.

Our best performers continued to be the dorado. But, we had good showings of roosters, sailfish, marlin and even a few pargo.

Las Arenas

Our anglers who fished Las Arenas ran into more of those school-sized dorado. They sometimes pesky fish are 5-15 pounds with the average being about 8 pounds. Lots of fun on light tackle and surface jigs. Have had several groups of anglers out there with bass rigs and spinning rods having way too much fun. Some larger fish in the 20-25 pound class but not that many. I will say that toward the end of the week, the bite surely improved with not only more fish per panga, but more quality fish as well which was a great surprise as well as some billfish showing. Sorry…no wahoo for awhile and live bait is still an issue, but we’re using a mixture of live bait and dead baits that are all working well.

One of the nice surprises this week were the rooster fish. We hadn’t had that many roosters lately either because they’ve moved on or simply we haven’t had that many folks chasing them. They’re exotic and a much sought-after gamefish, but they don’t taste good so if you’re looking for something to put on the plate, it doesn’t make too much sense for many anglers.

However, we had a number of folks take a shot at them this week coming back with 20-50 pound fish caught-and-released after nice photos.

La Paz

Our most solid fishing again. Fish can be surprisingly close to shore and literally in the bay. If you’re looking for school-sized fish, one of our anglers said, “We could still see the hotel and Tailhunter Restaurant from where we were fishing all day. Every cast was a biter!” Again, great fun on light tackle and line.

Larger fish were found closer to Espirito Santo Island and around the corner in front of Las Cruces and El Rosario where the fish would be in the 30-40 pound class. As well, schools of jack crevalle would be found that really busted up some happy fishermen and put the hurt on some rods.

There are also some good numbers of billfish. A majority of our hook ups on marlin and sails this week occurred right where the small dorado schools were located probably because the billfish are feeding on the smaller dorado.

That’s the way to do it! Our Captain Eddy Carballo helps 13-year-old Luke Fregoso from Agoura Hills with his biggest dorado. The 40-pound class bull was hooked north of La Paz and Luke fought it solo all the way to the boat. He also had a fish estimated at 50 pounds on for awhile.

Yes! There was some crazy weather this past week. Here’s a shot taken from the beach of the giant waterspout that popped up in the channel between Cerralvo Island, La Ventana and Las Arenas. No one has ever seen one this big out there.

Fortunately, this didn’t affect the fishing! But, it was pretty fascinating to watch!

Debbie White , our amiga from Tualatin OR, spends several weeks a year with husband, Don, with us in La Paz getting in some great fishing and always taking big fish like Debbie’s massively huge bull dorado here just outside of Bahia de los Muertos!

Wayne Moss has been my friend for many years and an exellent fisherman. He is a commercial pilot in the Maldives but took a few days to visit us and got a nice catch-and-release roosterfish just outside of Las Arenas.

Dick Carroll and his wife, Jeanette come to us from New Mexico and pose with a really nice Las Arenas bull dorado on the beach at Bahia de los Muertos.

Norm and Dorothy Fulco have known me since I ran JNJ Fishing Tackle in Rosemead CA some 20 years ago! The usually come to visit in July for Dorothy’s birthday and like fishing with Captain Pancho.

“Big Fish” Don White and an incredibly-colored blue bull dorado! Don is from Tualatin, Oregon near Portland.

Rob is looking pretty serious here but had to be one of the funniest guys this week. He took a day to give pargo fishing a shot and, while they lost several large models to the rocks, did manage this smaller one to bring back and add to the box of dorado!

Syd De Vries from Ripon CA and Captain Rogelio put another dorado in the boat. Yes, Rogelio is shorter than Syd! They were fishing north of La Paz near Espirito Santo Island.

Not as many whalesharks around these days, but there’s a few around. This “baby” 12 footer came up in the middle of the fishing boats to check out the action.

FULL MOON – TROPICAL RAINS – WATERSPOUTS AND DORADO!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of July 6-13, 2014

It was another one of crazy weeks. The fish were here but the weather was crazy funky. We had afternoon tropical storms that brought some heavy thunderstorms at times and flooding. The nutty thing was that it would rain for 10 minutes here…but not there…30 minutes in one area and 2 blocks away, it would be totally dry. This is normally the kind of weather we get in the fall, but El Nino conditions seem to have changed the game a bit. Thankfully, no hurricanes and no serious damage from the flooding, but out-of-the-blue mid-week, we actually had some pretty intense water-spouts show up between El Sargento, Las Arenas and Cerralvo Island. They looked like water tornados like the kind that would pick up your house and send you off to the Land of Oz! Incredible to watch.

Here’s what we saw this week:

LAS ARENAS

Our Tailhunter fleet at Las Arenas again found lots of action on the smaller school-sized dorado in the 5-8 pound range. They are like little squirrels all over the place. The larger models were harder to find, but the few we got were trophy 30-40 pound slugs. Dorado made up 80% of our Las Arenas catch.

Other species included some marlin and sailfish and roosters along the beach. Live bait continues to be problematic, but we’re still getting fish. No wahoo this week, but that’s because no one was really fishing for them. However, divers say the skinnies are still out by the island.

LA PAZ

La Paz fishing has been our “cooler-filler” action. The dorado have been 10-40 pounds regularly with a number of fish in the great 15-20 pound category. Lots of fun. Plenty strong without destroying anyone! I think the fact that we have move live bait in our La Paz area has made a difference. In addition to the dorado we are getting hookups with striped marlin and sails as well. We did some schools of roosters along the beaches and some of our guys that went after pargo and cabrilla got schooled on some big fish that took them to the rocks!

All hail the “Wahoo King!” Mike Guest from Phoenix Arizona has been coming to fish with Tailhunters in La Paz for years and never got a wahoo despite great efforts. This past week after only two days he got three wahoo and lost two other, but did get this one huge beast estimated at 60-70 pounds near Cerralvo Island. Amigo, Esteban Romero, gives a hand!

Cole Chavira from Solana Beach CA always smokes the fish here in La Paz since he was little kid. He’s now in high school and nothing changes. He put the wood to this big cabrilla on a deep jigged yo-yo iron!

He came all the way from Lisbon, North Dakota, but Joe Nelson told us, “It’s been as cold as 30 degrees below zero back home” and he wanted some sunshine and his first rooster fish! He got both including this fat rooster off the rocks at Punta Perico with Captain Archangel of the Tailhunter fleet.

Al Rodriguez has fished in La Paz and Baja but NEVER got a dorado so he really focused on one this past week. He did that…and MORE! Well done, Al. He nailed this nice bull just outside of La Paz Bay.

Malibu in the house! Luke Appel dropped the hammer on this sweet amberjack off Isla Espirito Santo on a heavy jig north of La Paz.

Captain Adolfo from the Tailhunter Las Arenas fleet helps Megan Kennedy from Washington with the smiles and a big roosterfish just off the rocks outside of Bahia de Los Muertos! The fish was released!

Gabe Rodriguez was in town with his dad and to celebrate his 40th birthday doing some fishing. He and dad both got into the dorado with Captain Rogelio of our Tailhunter La Paz fleet. Feliz cumpleanos!

Happy Honeymoon! Pat Snyder from Orangevale CA said this fish “beat him up” for 30 minutes while fishing with Captain Armando. He was here on his first trip to La Paz and to celebrate his first week of marriage! Congrats to him and Kathy!

Colin Reed from San Diego with a speedy wahoo he caught off Cerralvo Island where the wahoo bite has been pretty steady for several weeks!

Pretty good for a first day fishing and first time to La Paz for brothers Andew and Ian Vale Cruz from San Diego. They got a variety of fish including these two trophys. Andrew holds up a big dog-tooth snapper and Ian has his first wahoo. Captain Pancho fails the photo bomb!

Everyone was in on the dorado bite including amiga, Nina Duc Le and son, Will, from Albuquerque, New Mexico. Over 3 days fishing they got marlin, dorado, bonito, and others!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of June 1-8, 2014

Good solid fishing this week for both of our Tailhunter Fleets for once. Usually, either the La Paz fleet is doing better than our Las Arenas fleet or vice versa!

However, this week, I would have to say that for once, we had alot more consistency which made for some good catches and action for our anglers although here and there, some anemia still persisted. Basically, some boats did better than others on a given day. But, overall, everyone got fish.

For our Las Arenas anglers, the big news continues to be the wahoo bite around Cerralvo Island with some bruiser wahoo literally hammering the Yo-Zuri and especially the Rapala X-Rap lures which seem to be the season’s new-found “hot lure”. Run ‘em deep and they get bit!

I gotta say, there’s gotta be some big time wahoo underwater because even with wire, some of the lures are still getting bit off. And…get this…we’ve had some lures literally getting CRUSHED! I mean, how often do you ever hear of a hard-bodied lure like a Rapala getting broken or even smashed by the teeth! Or the treble hooks getting straightened out! That’s a big mean fish that can do that! We had several fish this week tickle the 50-pound mark and even one estimated at 70 pounds!

The other benefit of these deep running X-raps that can run 30’ down is that we’re actually getting some huge pargo on them! (By the way, I am NOT a rep for Rapala! Prior to this, I actually liked the Yo-Zuris better because the older metal-lipped Rapalas got “out of tune” too easily after a bonito slammed them. But the new ones have acrylic lips that dive deep and don’t get all screwy!).

The other big star at Las Arenas has been the rooster fish. Not as many “big fish” this week compared to other weeks when we had 50-90 pound roosters, but 30-45 pounders this week are nothing to sneeze at if you’ve ever gotten bent on one! For many, this is an opportunity to finally get a rooster checked-off the bucket list and, also for many, they’ve never had a fish this big to contend with. As one of our anglers told me later, “I don’t know what I was thinking asking for a 100-pound fish! Prior to this, I had only caught a 40-pound salmon. After 15 minutes on a 30 pound rooster, I was ready to pass off the rod to my friend and sit down with a beer! These fish don’t give up!”

For dorado at Las Arenas there were polar opposites. There’s a spot we’re starting to call the “nursery.” There are so many 3 to 8 pound dorado there that you can hook a dozen quite easily and the flyfishers and light tackle anglers are having a blast.

Beyond that, there’s very little in between. The dorado then jump up into the 25-30 pound class! There’s a few out there and bigger ones as well.

For our La Paz fleet, dorado are the name of the game. Limits or near limits of 15-40 pound fish are just inside La Paz Bay and some of our boats actually quit early and came back with anglers saying “no mas!” Full fish boxes and ice chests after a few hours fishing were not uncommon. Other anglers not doing as well, still had opportunities with quite a few fish lost to either inexperience or simply tough luck…but still plenty of action!

On a final note…alot more marlin and sailfish hooks ups this week with more billfish entering th area. By my count, our two fleets hooked perhaps a dozen billfish of varying sizes including one blue marlin and the rest being 100 pound stripers and sailfish. One fish brought in and the others either got un-bottoned or released.

Tom Worley cabrilla grande tags smalll 4-14-proc

Not bad for a first time out with us! From Evergreen, Colorado, Tom Worley pulled this trophy pig cabrilla (Mexican seabass) out’ve the rocks near Cerralvo Island. He was working a live bait early in the week.

Many of you know Esteban Romero, one of our favorite amigos and who drives for us. Even he got into the wahoo action with this speedster while trolling a Rapala outside of Bahia de Los Muertos near Cerralvo Island.

Another first-timer with us had an incredible two days of fishing getting and releasing his first roosterfish of about 40 pounds then sticking a wahoo and a dorado for the grand slam. McKell Condie was visiting us from Utah. Oh…and he also jumped in the water to swim with a whaleshark too!

Big smile and a two-handed batch of dorado for everyone’s amigo, Jorge Romero, who also took some time this week to check out the fishing. He got a total of 4 dorado for the day.

Always with a good day of fishing, Taylor Murphey, from Lakewood CA poses with a fresh colorful dorado she took fishing with grandpa Roger Thompson who kindly sent us the photo. That’s the beach near Muertos Bay in the background.

Amigo, Paul Nagata, from San Francisco, usually visits us several times a year and got away this week for a quick few days with his favorite captain Jorge. This particular day, Paul jumped all over the dorado, but the previous day he hooked a massive wahoo that straightened the hook near the south-end of Cerralvo Island.

These two guys cracked me up! Left is Bob Martz and on the right is Jordan McMasters from Victoria, Canada. They show off a few of their dorado on the beach, but Jordan also caught and released a 50 pound roosterfish.

From Mexico City, Carlos Westerman was able to get out one day with us at La Arenas and our Captain Archangel. The action wasn’t great, but he made the most of it and took this nice-sized wahoo and dorado.

FRUSTRATING FISHING BUT SOME NICE HIGHLIGHTS ON A TOUGH WEEK

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of April 27-May 4, 2014

It was somewhat of a frustrating week of fishing. It started well. It ended fairly well. But in between, it was a bit rugged.

We had some promise going into the week but then strong winds and some really high tidal surges and waves seemed to have not only stirred up the waters, but also chased away the bits of live bait spots we had as well as brought up cooler waters and some rougher waves. Not exactly the best conditions or situations for fishing. Just being honest.

There were some highlights, however. What we lacked in quantity and action we tended to make up for it in some nice quality fishing. There were some good-sized rooster fish taken that ran 30-60 pounds and some larger ones broken off. All of them released.

There were also some larger dorado in the area as well that helped out as well. Some of the pangas got limits or near limits some days. Not everyone, but several boats a day would do well. It just depended on the the spot as well as the luck and skill of the anglers.

But, truth be told, there were days this week when boats came back with nothing…either because of simple bad luck or losing fish or choosing to chase a fish that was “hot”one day, but cooled off the next. I especially felt badly for a pair of flyfishing anglers we had that fished hard and hardcore like troopers for the entire week and pretty much came up goose-egged. It wasn’t a good week for flyfishing…and tough for the conventional fishing as well. Despite some nice catches, it might have been one of the more frustrating weeks of the young season.

The highlight would had to have been the wahoo that went on the bite again. Every day, we took a few and lost even more to the speedy toothy fish. But, for many of our anglers, it was their first wahoo with some decent 20-35 pound ‘hoos brought into the boat. South end of Cerralvo Island was our hot spot trolling Rapala and YoZuri lures.
