yellowtail Tim Butterworth tags small 4-13

Tim Butterworth from Petaluma has been coming to the La Paz area for many many season and been a Tailhunter amigo for almost as long! But, he never had caught a yellowtail. Until this past week where he stuck this thick one north of La Paz.

This is a very special picture. Bob Nielson has been a Baja rat for years and a good friend and clients for many seasons with Tailhunters. He was so excited because in all those years, he had never caught a sierra and was jazzed about bringing it that night to Tailhunter Restaurant to have us make ceviche. Regretfully, Bob flew home Monday evening from La Paz…went to bed…and passed away in his sleep. Bob was a great guy and there was never a dull moment. He was always a character. Our waiters at Tailhunter Restaurant called him “Bob ZZ Top!” God bless you Bob! We miss you fish brother!

Here’s a tough fish…a big fat pargo mulato…great eating and great to catch out’ve the rocks. But, Mindy Pollock jacked up this trophy with some help from Captain Bolo around Espirito Santo Island.

I love this photo! Talk about the “look” of a fishing pirate, this is our amigo from Idaho, Mick Pollock who fished with us a few days and got yellowtail, pargo and sierra but shows off one of his nice dorado.

Bill Ausman from Atascadero CA was able to squeeze in a quick day of fishing with us while on vacation in La Paz and jumped on one of our pangas at Las Arenas to put the hurt on this nice bull dorado just outside of Bahia de Los Muertos.

A check on the satellite water temperatures from our friends at Terrafin.com show all the warm water in our area. All that orange and red stuff is water temps i the high 70’s and 80’s! Not much cool water around!

FISHING AND TEMPERATURES WARMING UP!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of April 6-13, 2014

Gosh, it’s getting warm down here! I would say it’s a bit warmer than usual, but a really pleasant week with cool morning and then highs in the high 80’s to low 90’s during the fishing day dropping to great afternoon and early evening breezes! Water temps, as we’ve been saying the last few months are warmer than normal now with most surface temperatures in tickling the 80’s as well making for some great swimming and diving, not to mention warm-water species for fishing.

That being said, since we fish both Las Arenas and La Paz with our fleets, the bite this past week reflected exactly those water temperatures. Around Cerralvo Island and the Las Arenas area where water temperatures are pretty much all warm now and in the 80’s dorado have been the mainstay catch already…much earlier than normal.

Fish are found in a number of places including right in Bahia de Los Muertos up close to the shore and beach then out towards the nearby buoys. You don’t have to get out that far to find the mahi! Fish size has also increased. Still alot of 10 pound schoolie-fish, but some bigger 20-25 pounders have been taken and larger ones lost. In this same area, we’re seeing an increased number of billfish as well like striped marlin.

As you go north to deeper and cooler waters (relatively speaking, but still “warmer than normal”) , especially around the north end of Cerralvo Island and Espirito Santo Island, we’ve been naturally encountering the cooler-water fish including some big barred-pargo and 40+ pound yellowtail (the ones we can stop! Some of these beasts are pretty mean!) There’s also some dorado moving into the area as well as waters get warmer.

Bait wise…gosh…not sure how that’s gonna play out. There seems to be zero or minimal sardines around. At Las Arenas, we’re using ballyhoo as well as stripped bonito. And, we’re using the larger ladyfish to get the bigger roosterfishg. For La Paz, we’re going out early and getting mackerel and caballitos (small jacks).

IGFA record holder, representative, author and journalist, Gary Graham, will also be on hand.

What the heck is going on? Wahoo in winter? Jack Steele originally from Seattle WA put this gorgeous ‘hoo on the boat fishing near Cerralvo Island late in the week. Check out the calm waters…it makes a difference!

Fat forktail! Charlie “Sticks” McGee is one of the best fishermen I know and a dynamite drummer and music teacher as well from San Diego. Our amigo stuck this thick yellowtail out in the channel north of La Paz.

When it comes to putting big fish in the boat, our amiga, Donna Thompson, from La Ventana via Long Beach CA holds a thick, fat wahoo…a personal best!

We’re smack in the middle of whale watching season and taking folks out daily to Bahia Magdalena to see the whales. Contact us for a once-in-a-lifetime experience and get close to these great animals. They normally start to leave around March so don’t delay!

Tailhunters is finally leaving the Pacific Northwest where we have been for the last month doing some outstanding shows in Puyallup WA (Seattle), Portland OR and Yakima WA! Thanks to everyone who has come by…old friends and new amigos! Lots of bookings for fishing with us in La Paz this year! But now, we leave the snow and rain and one of our favorite areas and head south all the way to the Phoenix ISE show where it’s supposed to be 80 degrees! THE WEEK IN SURPRISE BITE

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of February 9-16, 2014

An otherwise slow week was saved by a late week chew that turned up some quality fish.

As typical, we got the usual winds, especially early in the week. That never helps with the fishing but we come to expect that during the winter. Especially northern winds. It also really jacks up our ability to get live bait. But, as the week went on, the winds diminished.

And suddenly the bite turned on.

And it was a surprise. Usually, we look for inshore fish during winter. But instead, we got some real trophy stuff. Once again, just like last week, wahoo showed up around Cerralvo Island. Normally, it’s far too cold for us to be seeing these prized fish, but the boats took the at the north and south end of the island on slow trolled baits as well as lures. The fish were good quality too with fish going 20–50 pounds which are real slammers, especially when you consider that these are known to be the “fastest fish in the world” capable of blazing line off a reel at close to 70 mph!

But, on top of that, we also picked off a few dorado. Again, not only are these warm water fish, but we shouldn’t even be seeing these until about later March or April.

In addition to the wahoo and dorado, a few more of the yellowtail also bent the rods. These fish are more typical of this time of year and we should be going full bore on these any week now. So, it was encouraging to see more of these in the counts.

As for other species, we took some small pargo and snapper, cabrilla, and lots of bonito.

It’s been a great show season and Jill and Jonathan now leave the Pacific Northwest and the Yakima WA sportsmens show and head south to the Phoenix International Sportsmens Expo.

Our next show starting this week will be in the Cardinal Football Stadium where the NFL Cardinals play! This is a super show! Lots of stuff for the whole family! Come say hi!

TAILHUNTER ROAD TOUR TAKES IT TO PHOENIX

Our 2014 Tailhunter Road Tour takes to the road again this week. After an outstanding month in the Pacific Northwest attending shows in Washington and Oregon, we now drive south and take off our rain and snow gear and put on the shorts as we go to the International Sportsmans Expo in Phoenix, Arizona. This is really a super show right on the floor of the University of Phoenix Football stadium where the NFL Cardinals play! It’s a great place for a show and there’s always great weather, plenty of parking and lots to see!

The dates are Thursday to Sunday (Feb. 20-23rd).

Big striped marlin for Larry Wilson from Montana. It was Larry’s first time fishing Mexico and first time fishing with Tailhunter International in La Paz. Larry caught numerous dorado on light tackle releasing many then he hooked onto this striped marlin also on light tackle. With the assist of Captain Pancho, he battled the fish to the boat…took a quick photo…and released the fish which swam off strongly! Larry was fishing south of Cerralvo Island.

John Virgin struggles to hold this big boy bull dorado for the photo! He got several of these fishing this past week with Tailhunters. This particular beauty with the great colors was taken just north of La Paz.

From Sacramento CA, Adam Wilfley and Craig Young pose with a few of their catch from Las Arenas while standing on the beach at Bahia de Los Muertos. Both guys got in on one of the days this week when the schoolie-dorade went crazy with fast easy limits!

This was a good birthday! Sharon Virgin gets a hand from husband John posing with her first sailfish. She also caught and released a hammerhead shark and several large dorado and bonito. They weren’t able to release the sailfish. She had several banner days of fishing with Tailhunters.

Jon Holtby won the “pot” from his fishing amigos with this big bull dorado while fishing north of La Paz with Captain Joel of the Tailhunter Fleet. The big fish was taken on bait near Espirto Santo Island just before the storm arrived. (It never really did!)

Check out the colors on Sharon’s fish! It seemed all the larger fish were taken this past week with our Tailhunter La Paz fleet while our Tailhunter Las Arenas fleet put up more numbers. Sharon took several big fish after a week with us here in La Paz.

If you fish with our Tailhunter Las Arenas fleet, this is often how the day starts! With a vigorous work-out catching giant squid for bait! Dean Wilson puts the wood to another big squid that fight surprisingly hard (see photo below). Husband Larry looks on.

Great bait and great eating, the giant squid have been with us now for several weeks although this is really one of the “little guys.” Some of them have been upward to 50 pounders and they get much larger! Captain Pancho is about to heave one over the gunwale of the panga. Note the other pangas all doing the same thing in the early morning hours.

We had several days this week at Las Arenas where the 10-pound dorado were as thick as…DORADO! They swarmed the pangas and limits came fast and easy with pangas releasing fish as fast as they could shake them off. Great undewater shot by John Virgin. Light tackle and flyfishers had a ball.

This is “Hurricane Manuel.” We surely dodged a bullet when the big storm veered away and left us with some wind…a little rain…and just some hazy skies!

HURRICANE MANUEL GIVES A SCARE BUT ONLY SPITS AND LEAVES THE FISHING ALONE!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of September 15-22, 2013

We had a great bite going all week on dorado but then had to contend with the sudden approach of “Manual” that started as a little blip on the weather radar that became a “Tropical Depression” then reached hurricane status in a very short time.

It didn’t look good. It was on a collision course with Southern Baja and was surely going to slam into La Paz. Captains were pulling boats out of the water. Others from outside came running into the bay to seek shelter. Folks were in the markets buying water and flashlight batteries and bottles of tequila and cases of beer!

It looked like we were going to have to cancel fishing the rest of the week and I was preparing to contact anglers coming down on their vacations to try to postpone their trips.

Then suddenly, the strangest thing happened. The storm veered 90 degrees east…like it turned a corner. All we got was about an hour of hard rain in the evening and some strong winds for a day. That was it!!! Saved!

We ended up keeping right on fishing! It was a little bumpy leading in and leading out of the storm, but the fish didn’t stop biting. Dorado madness, especially after the storm moved off. In fact, I had not seen that kind of frenzy all season. We had some of our pangas run into entire hungry schools of 10-15 pounders where each boat caught and released 15-25 dorado each!

It wasn’t like that for everyone, but there were surely large chunks of mahi schools out there and most boats got limits or near limits or, lost alot of fish and “should have” had limits! (I saw some thumbs with blisters on them!) . As well, there were some larger fish ranging around as well with 25-35 pounders in the mix.

It was also a pretty good week on a few other species. We hooked a few wahoo around Cerralvo Island and also just outside La Paz Bay although all the fish either bit through or got off. We also got into some nice grade striped marlin and sailfish as well.

We have a mix of bait although it’s hard to tell what we’ll have from one day to the next. However, everything seems to have a place and works well. We’re still catching giant squid at Las Arenas which makes for great bait (plus good eating!) plus using some sardines, mackerel and caballitos plus using small bonito strips for larger dorado.

Not much left of the massive yellowtail bite we had going on for 3 months, but we still found a few. First time angler with us from Florida Joe Hussin hefts up one of several they found fishing the west side of Espirito Santo Island.

In the past few weeks, roosterfish have really taken off. None of the big boys that La Paz has historically been known for but fun school-sized 20-40 pounders have not been uncommon. Captain Victor here helps our buddy Bob Solee of B & B Fishing Rods in Portland OR to hold up a nice pez gallo before releasing it. That’s the rocks of Punta Perico in the background about 50 yards back.

Although he’s not smiling, Belmond Mann and his wife Amy love fishing with Captain Archange at Las Arenas and on this particular day, Bel surprisingly outfished Amy putting this nice pargo liso in the boat. Over two days they got a variety of pargo, cabrilla and snapper. Typical of the weekly bite.

Charlie Gibson fished with us for a while week. Charlie just had his right hand (reeling hand) surgically repaired so when the yellowtail bit off Espiritu Santo Island, he struggled mightily to get the fish to the boat! But, he gritted it out and got 3 ‘tails.

Yes, marlin have started to show and, although they’re not quite in the feeding mode, it could happen any day. The three Rodriguez brothers hooked this one which was not able to be released. It was caught off Cerralvo Island. Reports say that the high spot at the 88 has stripers sitting all over it just waiting for the water temps to go up a tad!

Don and Deb White from Oregon come to see us several times a year and always do well. All week, Don was the “King of Cabrilla” taking big seabass after big seabass. Here, he and Debbie show off two huge cabrilla, a snapper and a barred pargo.

Every now and then they even let me out on the water! I wanted to stay out’ve the way our other pangas so I grabbed a flyrod and we went out to the bonito ground to experience the “pain” of pulling on 10-15 pound horse bonito on a whippy 10wt flyrod…just for fun! OUCH! I still have bruises on my knuckles and forearm. None of these fish took less than 15 minutes to put in the boat! You veteran flyfishers can attest to this! Tough tough fish! We released all of them!

Just had to share this amazing photo with you. Joe Hussin from FLA was fishing with us this week and were in Capt. Archangel’s panga and just about 200 yards of Punta Perico a huge humpback kept breaching around them to the point where they were getting sprayed and splashed. The last one was no more than 30 feet in front of the panga. At that point Capt. Archangel said, “We’re outta here!” Joe caught this amazing shot during on of the jumps…just right…with his iPad!!! It’s poster quality! The waters are full of life right now…porpoise, turtles, whales, birds…an amazing place to be this time of year!

MIXED WEATHER AND MIXED FISHING ADDS VARIETY!

La Paz/ Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of April 29-May 5, 2012

It was a mixed week on all levels this week. We had hot muggy sunshine to wind to rain to flat seas and bouncy rolling chop. Sometimes the fish bit better when it was rough. Sometimes they bit better when it was flat as glass. No rhyme or reason. One day , they would all chase baits. The next day the fish would turn their noses up at the bait and only want slow trolled slices of dead fish. Or they wanted only dead sardinas. As one of our clients said ,who fished with us all week, “It was like the fish were picky kids never knowing what they wanted!” The game of the week was trying to figure out where they would be….what they would want…and what they would eat.

It would help that there are so many different conditions on top of the fact that there were so many different species of fish as we hit that “transitional period” when the waters are getting warmer, but there’s some areas of cold and some areas of warmer waters. These differences in water temperatures could be horizontal where you would be in green cooler water in one spot, but move 100 yards to the side and the waters would be warm clear blue. Or, the thermoclines could be vertical. On the surface it could be 75. A few feet down it could drop 10 degrees or, the temp change might not occur for 40 feet.

I was scuba diving last week and I ran into thermoclines on many levels and saw different fish depending on the water temperatures and feeding in different thermoclines. For instance, I found 69 degree water at 25 feet down, but at 40 feet down, I found 72 degree water…it was actually warmer the further I went down. I found pargo in the cooler water swimming but bonito and jacks swimming in the warmer water further down.

Anyway, the bite reflected all the change. I gotta tell ya…the ocean is really full of life, even if you’re not fishing. But the conditions are such that all of us are saying that it just looks like it’s gonna bust open.

There’s so much variety out there. Cooler water fish like yellowtail and big amberjack are sporadically still around. Pargo and big cabrilla are feeding in the rocks and shallows. Along the beaches, the roosterfish are getting livelier as well as the jack crevalle and occasional pompano. Where the water is cooler in the shallows, there are still sierra to be caught as well.

Offshore, sargasso weed is building up and literally strewn across the ocean. Schools of dorado are starting to show although not necessarily ready to eat just yet. Same with the marlin. The big guys are sitting on the surface just sunning. Give another few degrees in water temperature and they’ll start to chew. Just a matter of time. A few were hooked! Flurries of fast moving tuna have also been spotted as well.

We’ll just have to see!

FLASH UPDATE - We got a few flurries of big tuna being lost, but finally, the fish came up and bit big time late...all out at the 88 spot. Big fish in the 80-200 pound class like this estimated 150 pounder that Roger Thompson got. We had two clients bust off on fish and another that lost a rod and reel (Penn International) that went overboard when he got tired and changed hands right when the fish surged during a 2-hour battle. No telling how long the fish will stay, but some big boys on the growl! Will keep you posted!

It's really hard to pose correctly for a good photo when a big fresh ticked-off bull dorado comes aboard on the gaff and is whacking you in the gut, crotch and kneecaps, but this big bull by Jon Luker of Arroyo Grande shows off one of the big dorado we got this week with dorado action heating up just-in-time for the summer bite with some 20-40 pound fish already in the mix! Jon is one of our best long-time amigos and he got this fish just north of La Paz where sargasso weeds and schools of mahi are starting to build up!

Sometimes they even let my rusty Baja bones in the pangas! It was another great week of roosterfishing! Check out this nice pez gallo that Walker Schearer nailed on light tackle just off the little cliffs outside of Bahia de Los Muertos. The 10-year-old caught many of his first and largest fish over the week including dorado, roosters, jacks and many others! Pretty good for a Montana kid on his first trip to Mexico!

Vince Acosta got his "personal best" largest dorado ever fishing with us and our Tailhunter La Paz fleet. The Pacific Beach angler was fishing near Espiritu Santo Island north of La Paz with his buddy, Jude Martinez (see photo below) when they ran into the big schools.

When you use a PINK reel and wear wild checkered shorts like Mike Davis, how can I not post your photo in the weekly report? LOL...Despite warming waters and air temps, we're still getting some yellowtail here and there. Mike got this one fishing with our Tailhunter Las Arenas fleet just out of Bahia de Los Muertos!

Nice way to start the morning with barred pargo in the boat for Jeff Marston caught out of Muertos Bay fishing with our Tailhunter Las Arenas fleet. Barred pargo have been a nice bottom species for us the last few weeks.

A mess 'o' pargo and cabrilla (seabass) meat is what Mike O'Neil and Joe Jacobs got going for them with this nice catch of barred pargo they nailed fishing with our Tailhunter Las Arenas Fleet. Wish Mike had looked up! Both are from the San Diego area.

There was a rumor that they had to wake Jude Martinez up when this big dorado bit as he was snoozing! But he did get it to the boat and that's what counted. It was a pretty solid week of dorado fishing especially for our Tailhunter La Paz fleet.

We were all this age! When you are 8-years-old every fish is worthy of a big smile and "show-and-tell." Wyatt Schearer came to visit us from Montana where he actually has a trout pond on the family property and knows how to fish, but couldn't be prouder of this nice yellowtail he got in Pilots Cove! He pulled on it like a veteran!

One nice surprise the last week or two has been the appearance of pompano...members of the jack family related to roosterfish, jack, crevalle, yellowtail and amberjack...these great eating fish are fun to catch and we've been finding them on the dropoffs next to sandy areas of the beach or rocks. Chip Chandler of San Diego holds up one he got out of Las Arenas.

This past week or so, many clients have been catching either personal best "largest" fish or personal best "first time ever" fish. Chad Shearer, the popular host of the outdoor show "Shoot Straight" http://www.shootstraightTV.com put down his rifles and bow to come visit us getting 19 different species in 3 days fishing many on the flyrod and light tackle including this rooster which was revived and released.

DORADO AND ROOSTERFISH COME ON STRONG TO START SUMMER BITE!

La Paz/Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of May 29 to June 5, 2011

FLASH UPDATE:

After I had posted up the fishing report we got all kinds of late reportr that I couldn’t get in on time. The big boy tuna finally came up on us out at the 88 spot outside of Cerralvo Island. These are BIG fish up to 200 pounds and several guys had long battles only to lose fish . Others broke rods and reels. Others just quit realizing they were overmatched. Some of these fish are being fought for 1-3 hours! We’ll keep you posted! Exciting stuff and never sure how long this will last!

And now back to your regular fishing programing…read on!!!!

No doubt! Unless something drastic happens, I’d say
we’ve turned the corner and dorado season is finally here. It’s about
time. Air temperatures have been warm enough for several weeks, but it
took awhile for the waters to catch up. A little over a week ago, they
edged over the 80 degree mark and like throwing a switch, fish that were only
mildly interested like marlin, sailfish, wahoo and especially the dorado
finally woke up!

Although the bite hasn’t been wide-open, it can be!

Several times our boats got into big schools of dorado with
non-stop action and other times, boats hit a fish here and a fish there and at
the end of the day…wow…uh…hey, Joe…we have a stack of fish in the
box! Occasionally, there’s some slower moments and only a few are caught
but overall, this is looking really optimistic as we roll into June and the
summer bite. The nice thing too, is that we’re getting some nice quality
fish mixed in as well!

Last season we had a good dorado bite, no doubt. But
so many of the fish were punk 5-10 pounders…all year! Sure, there were
some bigger fish, but a “big” fish last year was 20 pounds instead of
the big 30-40 pound bulls that we are used to hooking. But this year so
far, in just the last 2 weeks, we’ve already gotten more 20-40 pound fish than
I remember all last year! The bigger fish are getting taken more by our
La Paz fleet than our Las Arenas fleet as there appears to be a better
concentration of bait and floating sargasso weeds north and east of La
Paz. But, our Las Arenas boats are getting dorado too.

Actually, quite a mix of fish.

Our La Paz fleet is getting more dorado and collateral
hookups on big cabrilla , pargo, roosterfish, marlin and sails.

Our Las Arenas fleet is getting more of a “buffet”
with catches of dorado mixed with barred pargo, smaller cabrilla, the
occasional tuna and roosterfish and wahoo.

There’s some BIG roosterfish out there right now. It
seems every week we’re getting (and releasing) roosters in the 50-80 pound category…many
after incredble battles on light tackle. There’s several spots that have
been very productive with most fish in the 10-30 pound class and almost all of
them getting released.

Oh…and we’re still getting a few stray yellowtail too!

La Paz/ Las Arenas Fishing Report from Tailhunter International for Week of May 22-29, 2011

It was finally a week where the dorado decided to join the party and just-in-time for Chad Schearer's TV show "Shoot Straight" and his family to show up with the cameras. http://www.shootstraightTV.com Chad is the TV host of the program and usually travels the world with either a bow or muzzle-load rifle, but is quite a celebrity with the flyrod as well. He filmed all week with us and one of his sponsors is Cabela's Outdoor Stores. They wanted him to test out their new 6-piece travel flyrod that looked so thin and light a trout would've broken the 10 wt stick! Chad's intent was to get a big roosterfish on it, but when a big dorado charged through, it was GAME ON! Chad battled this monster 40-pound rooster on the light flygear for 1 hour and 45 minutes! He had never gotten a dorado before and this was a personal best...and all in front of the cameras!

Wahoooo! We finally got one to the boat. For weeks, I've been saying the conditions are right and Roger Thompson finally nailed one on a rapala at the north end of Cerralvo Island. He said te day was going slow (note the tuna boat in the back!) but he usually comes through and this 60 pound class speedster topped the day!

It was a stellar week for roosters for both our La Paz and Las Arenas fleets with fish up to 80 pounds. Sheldon "Doc" Schearer is a minister and sherrif's officer from Montana and this 60 pound rooster was a personal best. It ate a live sardine in about 10 feet of water near the Las Arenas lighthouse and took 1/2 an hour to battle. The fish was released. In fact, they caught 6 that day and all but one fish were put back in the water.

Tailhunter's own Jilly Roldan got into the nice dorado bite late this week posing with San Diego's Joe Jacobs in the blue waters of Balandra Bay north of La Paz. They also got roosterfish and small yellowtail, but ran into a spot of dorado that blew up on them and they lost count of the fish with double and triple hookups!

Tihs is the first week that dorado bit consistently. Not surprisingly, the waters edged over 80 degrees too and the winds calmed down. hmmmm...funny how that works! But the week started slowly, but by mid-week the counts were going up with mostly smaller fish in the 5-10 pound category, but as the week went on, there were more 20-40 pound fish in the counts and hardly anything prettier than a lit up mahi on the hook like this one taken off Espiritu Santo Island this week.

Even last season we didn't see many bull dorado over 20 pounds, but this week we had some fish in the 30, 40 and one that may well have been over 50 pounds! Jill got this one on the NE corner of Espiritu Santo Island just off the drop-off on live bait. Captain Joel holds it up for the photo! The waters are holding various spots of fish but they're scattered in all the usual places with many holding under building schools of sargasso weeds floating on the surface!

Even tho' waters kicked into "summer mode," there were still some "cooler water" fish around like this decent yellowtail held by Lisa Chandler of La Mesa CA. We actually took a few of these YT's this week.

Even when the fish weren't biting it seemed there were often schools of dolphin blasting through...wherever dolphin go! It was not unusual to see half the fleet suddenly stop what they were doing to follow the schools! This one was between Cerralvo and Espiritu Santo Island.

For alot of our clients and friends this week, it was their first time tangling with roosterfish and underlines why La Paz waters are called the "roosterfish capital of the world." Joe Jacobs from San Diego took this nice one in Pilot's Cove north of La Paz and released it.

The roosters were biting for BOTH our Tailhunter La Paz and Tailhunter Las Arenas fleets. Captain Jorge with our Las Arenas fleet helps Marsha Schearer pose with this slug rooster caught in shallow water just outside Bahia de Los Muertos.

SLOW START TO WEEK CRANKS UP WITH DORADO AND ROOSTERFISH!

Las Arenas/ La Paz Fishing Report for Week of May 22-29, 2011

Amazing what a difference a week can make. Take away a
full moon; strong winds; green water; and inconsistent water
temperatures…little things like that…and WHAM…THE FISH BITE! In
fact, water temps hit 80+ for the first time this year and it was a 180 degree
turn from the strange fishing last week. In fact, it was a pretty decent
week of fishing!

It didn’t start out like that! At the beginning, it was scratch fishing at
best. I was pretty worried. But…the conditions changed!

Hey, for the first time, dorado bit consistently with nice
patches of sargasso weed building up in the surrounding channels and while many
of the fish were firecracker punks in the 5-10 pound class, there were still
some nicer fish running in the 20-40 pound class (and even one or two that sure looked like 50-pound-class dorado) that really got folks
excited. In fact, we had Chad Schearer, nationally known host of the
outdoor TV show “Shoot Straight” filming the entire week (www.shootstraightTV.com) with us and
Chad, who had never flyfished Baja before and came to tie on a big roosterfish,
instead threw a pattern at boiling bonito and a huge 40-pound class
dorado bit his 10wt rod and it was “fish on!” And epic battle
lasted almost 2 hours as the fish bulldogged down on the light line but finally
Chad got the fish to the boat and was almost speechless in front of the
cameras!

As well, we got into some incredible roosterfish
action. Some stops with both our La Paz and Las Arenas fleets resulted in
double and triple roosterfish hookups. Fish ranged from 10 to as large as
80-pounds this week with some incredible battles on light tackle, flyrods and
spinning gear when anglers fishing for smaller “fun” fish instead got
blown up on larger world-class roosters that almost brought some anglers to
their knees on the smaller gear.

Overall, just a great week with additional species that
included some big cabrilla, jack crevalle, barred pargo, striped marlin (hooked
and lost and released); sailfish (hooked and lost and released), pompano,
bonito, barracuda and even some very very late yellowtail in the 10-15 pound
class. We even got a huge 9-foot mako
shark that ate a small dorado hooked by one of our amigos. They got it to the boat and wisely decided to
cut it loose!
