Captain Armando busts a smile over the shoulder of Scott Burnham who trolled up this nice sierra fishing with our Tailhunter Fleet at Las Arenas.

We don’t see many of these, but take a look at the China Mero (Hawkfish) caught by Jeff Burnham. These are tasty fish we occasionally catch around rocky areas.

Jeff Burnham poses with another beautiful sierra. These fish are great eating and tough fighters but during the winter cooler months, they hang out around ridges and beach drop offs near shallow water.

ANOTHER CRAZY WINDY AND RAINY WEEK!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Jan. 25 – Feb. 1, 2015

Not a whole lot to report this past week. We had some crazy days of rain and drizzle and when it wasn’t wet, it was windy either on the front or backside of the storm cells that came through. It didn’t rain hard, but definitely, not great to be outside trying to get a tan. We normally have windy days during this time of year and it’s unusual for us to get rain, but nothing is “for sure” when it comes to weather.

The good side is that we don’t have alot of anglers this time of year and those that do, usually are not hardcore and wanting to fish every day. So, with flexible schedules we can ask them to wait until perhaps another day later in the week is better. That being said, we got some OK inshore action on sierra, bonito and jack crevalle. Not much in the way of bait but have been using baby bonito when we can get them.

We have been keeping an eye on what the commercial guys are doing since they are working any chance they can get out, unlike sports fishing. These guys gotta make a living. They tell me there’s yellowtail at the island and there’s also sardines and mackerel for bait.

The forecast for the coming week is looking pretty good. Nothing but sunshine mostly. Back to normal! It’s gonna be 75 to 80 degrees in the daytime and mid-50’s at night!

Whales are in full “come see us” mode out at Bahia Magdalena and we’re running daily whale watching trips right now.

PORTLAND SPORTMAN’S EXPO COMING UP THIS WEEK!

La Paz in the house. All the way up in Washington, Jeanne and Jeff Brown who own Big Left Turn Yacht Managment in La Paz and were up for the Seattle Boat Show. They stopped in at the Seattle Fairgrounds to say hi. Great to see them. Tom is La Paz’s biggest Seahawks fan at our Tailhunter Restaurant!

She’s one of the best! Donna Thompson gets our first yellowtail of the season putting the wood to two nice yellowtail off Cerralvo Island with live bait.

Two more of our super amigos…from Bakersfield, California…Ken Gragg and Carl Lange put a handful of pargo and a cabrila in the boat fishing just outside of Bahia de los Muertos. These are tough fish to pull out’ve the rocks!

Captain Jorge and Richard Branson from Virgin Airlines? Nope…it’s our amigo, Rick Kasper who actually has been a double for Branson, but as an actor and host of his own outdoor TV show has also been a double for Gary Bussey. He’s also a fun fisherman! He’s showing off a dorado and a sierra here although they let a few get away!

YELLOWTAIL AND PARGO MAKE A SHOWING…SO DOES DRIZZLE AND RAIN!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Jan. 18-25, 2015

The week started on some real high notes. Not only did we have some really fishing-condusive weather, but the fish decided to join in as well. However, as the week progressed, by the end of the week, not only did winter winds return, but we also got the surprise of rain which dampened things a bit. Fortunately, being the off-season, we didn’t have to cancel anyone’s fishing trips as they weren’t many folks fishing this week anyway.

However, let’s talk about fishing. The best news is that we finally got into yellowtail. The big fork tail jacks really laid low last year when El Nino conditions warmed the waters and made bait and the big fish a rarity. However, this week we took some nice quality-grade yellows around Cerralvo Island near the high spots both north and south ends with bait and iron with fish going 20-30 pounds. Some hefty hamachi! Hopefully, this is just the start of things to come.

The yellowtail require the cooler waters and normally, we don’t see many until about February or March. They stick around until about May when the waters start warming and we see the warm water species like dorado, billfish and wahoo move in. We barely had any yellowtail to speak of at all last year. We’re hopeful that the yellowtail we saw this week are the vanguard of a nice yellowtail season.

Another fish we really didn’t see last year were the pargo…the big snapper that come up in the springtime just like the yellowtail. These big red/ copper fish are powerful and in the spring come into the shallows to spawn. One of the most vicious fish to tangle with and a real frustrating game fish to put in the boat because of their power and the rock cover they love, we got a few of those this week as well. Most of the big ones get lost because they’re just rugged sluggers, but early in the week some 3-8 pounders came up (a good sized one is 15…a brute is 40!) so, like the yellowtail maybe this year we’ll get them back.

In addition to the yellowtail and the pargo, there were some dorado and sierra taken plus cabrilla.

Then, the wind came back up again from the north and as the weekend approached, skies got cloudy and a few days of rain hit us. As I’m writing this, we’re still looking at rain then it will let up next week and the forecast calls for some rain late in the week again as the month ends.

WHALES WATCHING ON BAHIA MAGDALENA GOING FULL

If you want to really do one of those “once-in-a-lifetime” things or check something off your “bucket list” our Bahia Magdalena Whale Watching is in full swing. The grey whales have come down from the Bering Sea in the longest migration of any animal on the planet. They showed up a bit early this year and we’re running daily trips to see them. They usually stay around until about mid-March and the bay is where they come to mate, give birth and basically hang out in the warm calm waters where we can get up close to them in their natural environment. Just a shout-out thank you to all our amigos who came to visit us at the Washington Sportsmans Show at the Seattle Fairgrounds in Puyallup, Washington. After shows in Sacramento and Denver and about 3,000 miles of driving, this was our third show of the year and it was a great time. We saw so many of our friends and signed up lots of amigos for their 2015 fishing trips with Tailhunters in 2015. We now have a few days to catch up and re-group then hit our next show in Portland at the Portland Expo Center from Feb. 4th to 8th. Barred pargo and cabrilla (Mexican seabass) like these two nice fish taken by the Montejano Brothers (Andy and Raphael) have been biting nicely inshore lately. Typical action for this time of year and tough to get outta the rocks. But GREAT eating!

Some fat sierra and schoolie dorado are were not uncommon this week. No roosterfish to show you because all the roosters were released!

The grey whales have arrived earlier than normal and are already in good numbers at Bahia Magdalena and we’re already running day trips to get on the water with them!

POST HOLIDAY BLUES

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Jan. 11-18, 2015

There weren’t that many fishermen around this week, either because there simply weren’t that many around or those that wanted to fish were kept off the water by pesky northern winds. But, this is typical of winter fishing in our area and frankly, it’s pretty common few weeks after Christmas not to have even many tourists in town. You could almost call La Paz “sleepy.” Even the locals are keeping it low key and under the radar, perhaps still recovering from the holidays. Stores, streets and restaurants are almost empty sometimes!

We did get a few folks out on the water with air temps in the mid-70’s and a bit choppy. Sierra were biting along the drop-off points where shallow water slopes into deeper areas like near the Las Arenas lighthouse and also in the channel areas where current move between rocky spot. As well, the sloping areas also produced jack crevalle and some pompano…both related plus their more popular cousin the rooster fish with some smaller school-sized fish that might have gone about 15 pounds.

Bonito were prevailant not to far from shore either and a few stray free-swimming dorado were hooked as well.

WHALES HAVE SHOWN UP EARLY IN BAHIA MAGDALENA!

Yes, please rub my head for me! We love getting our photo taken with visitors!

Normally, from about late January to late March, the grey whales take up residence at Bahia Magdalena where they spawn, breed and give birth. In these shallow warm waters, this is the end of the largest migration of mammals on earth as they come down from the Bering Sea near Alaska. We’ve started running daily trips to the Bay to spend a day getting close to these amazing gentle animals and it’s a great life-time experience for the whole family. From one of our favorite cities…DENVER…we just had an incredible time at the International Sportsman’s Expo at the Convention Center downtown. Thanks to everyone who came to visit us in our booth to say hi and talk about their past and future fishing adventures in La Paz. What a kick and we never tire of seeing everyone!

So now…we head to our 3rd show on the “road tour.” First was Sacramento. Now, we just finished Denver. This week we set up for the Washington Sportsmans Expo at the Puyallup Fairgrounds near Seattle, Washington! 2015 TAILHUNTER/ WESTERN OUTDOOR NEWS PANGA SLAM & JACKPOT IS FILLING!

Captain Jorge and Verda Boyd started off the first day of last year’s Panga Slam with a nice bull dorado taken just off the area of La Ventana.

Tim Farrell took a photo of a trophy rooster fishing with Captain Archangel during last year’s Panga Slam. Tim caught several nice fish and released the all!

We just announced the dates for our 2015 Panga Slam two weeks ago nd the response was incredible! Still some spots available. Dates are June 16-21 and is gonna be a blast with 3 days fishing / hotel/ several great parties and dinners and a big island snorkel party as well. Jim and Brenda Bovee from San Diego hit the sweet spot for wind mid-week and turned in two days of nice varietal fishing with pargo, snapper, sierra and cabrilla!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Dec. 28, 2014 to Jan. 4, 2015

Happy New Year Everyone! Hope the new year is off to a good start for you!

We had another windy week here in La Paz, but about Wednesday it started to calm down and suddenly everyone wanted to go fishing! We put out more pangas in one day than we had in the two previous weeks combined! I guess everyone was waiting for those pesky north winds to settle down.

Anyway, we sure got quite a variety of fish. Nothing big, but for so many of our fishermen who are really in town for some sunshine and not necessarily hardcore anglers, there was some great action and fish to bring back for dinner. There’s alot of out-of-towners in La Paz right now for the holidays who are just trying to squeeze in an activity like snorkeling or diving or a day of fishing here-and-there.

So, for those who went out, we had cabrilla (sea bass) around 2-5 pounds. Smaller snapper and pargo of about the same size. Some really nice-sized sierra and some great bonito to bend the rods. Additionally, we had some surprise fish as well with some rooster fish caught and released that were going about 10-15 pounds; a few school-sized dorado; and even had a wahoo take down a lure, but regretfully come unbuckled. Oh well…

Still, great action and lots of fun without having to go out too far from shore or get bounced around out there in rough water. As the weekend came up the winds ramped up a bit and so did the fishing, but as you’re probably reading this, the winds have likely petered out and the seas are flat again. It’s going to be like this throughout the winter months which is pretty typical. It’s definitely chillier. I know many people will laugh, but our guys were complaining about the “cold water” which is now at 72 degrees!

The Tailhunter van has left the station and Jill and I are on the road and will be at the first of our “road shows” this week and for the next three months! First stop will be the International Sportsmans Expo at the California State Fairgrounds in Sacramento! This is a huge show and will run from Thursday to Sunday (January 8-11th). Our booth is in it’s usual place in the main hall.

NOT MANY ANGLERS AROUND FOR MIXED BAG OF FISH

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of December 14-21, 2014

I think this is the slow-down before the holidays. I think the whole city is just in “mellow Christmas mode” right now. Everyone is excited about Christmas, but it’s just very “tranquil” (peaceful) right now. I think every place is like that right now no matter where you live…unless you’re hitting a shopping mall in the U.S.

Here in Mexico, Christmas season started well before the U.S. Thanksgiving. There’s no Thanksgiving holiday in Mexico so right about Halloween / All Souls Day/ Dia de Los Muertos stores start selling decorations, toys, etc. And people start buying and decorating and getting ready two months ahead of time. Homes have been decorated for weeks. Christmas trees have been up since the end of November (which means the live ones can be pretty dry by now!). Packages have been under the trees for weeks also.

If you’re just headed out to buy toys or decorations now, you’re pretty much out-of-luck! There’s not much to buy. I had trouble finding a string of white lights last week for some that burned out already at the Tailhunter Restaurant! I had to go to 5 stores to find any Christmas lights!

Anyway, not many visitors around either. Next week folks will come in for vacation, but many of them are snow-birds or folks just coming in for the holidays. Not many anglers around! It would be a good time to be on the water since there’s no pressure on the fish at all!

We only had a few anglers ourselves. The only ones out there, for the most part, are the commercial guys.

It was a little windy here and there and kinda bouncy and rough a few days, but that’s typical this time of year. As I’ve mentioned often, we are only fishing with our fleet at Las Arenas/ Bahia de Los Muertos because it’s calmer there and the fish are closer and there’s more variety. With our La Paz fleet, it’s just too rough many days and a long bumpy ride to the fishing grounds for erratic fishing.

But, at Muertos and around Cerralvo, we’re still getting a few dorado up to about 15 pounds. Nothing big, but decent action. There’s still a few roosters around to about 20 pounds. Mostly school-sized fish although someone did latch onto a fish estimated at double that size. They never saw the fish, but it was hooked right there in the “rooster zone” near the Arenas light house and slammed into the bait like a big rooster. The clients had never caught a rooster before and kinda fumbled around and lost the fish! Oh well. Everyone had a laugh.

There are still some great inshore stuff too. Sierra are becoming more abundant as the waters get cold and in the rocks, we got some decent cabrilla and small pargo.

Tracey and Brian Campbell tags small dorado 12-14

Tracey and Brian Campbell were originally supposed to visit us last September, but Hurricane Odile got in the way . They were able to visit us this past week and get in some scuba diving, snorkeling and even a few days of fishing. Day one produced some nice dorado for taking back to Maryland and for dinner at Tailhunter Restaurant!

Carlos Cota just went out for an hour. That’s all the time he had. We went just past the point in about 30 feet of water to catch a few snapper for dinner and ended up with this striped marlin instead. Just shows some of the crazy variety right now. They weren’t able to release the billfish.

Captain Jorge and Yolanda Wheeler, our amiga from Las Vegas got some HUGE sierra not too far offshore from Bahia de Los Muertos.

CRAZY MIX OF FISH STILL HAPPENING BUT COOLER CONDITIONS ARRIVE

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Dec. 7-14, 2014

This past week was much more characteristic of December fishing. We had a little wind. A little breeze, especially late in the day. Waters are turning cooler and so is the air temp, but the sun has been out all week and it’s a pleasant time to be in town. Not many folks are in town now so you have the waters and the town pretty much to yourselves.

For the fishing, it seemed like it was different from day-to-day and panga to panga. All of our fishing right now, is pretty much with our Las Arenas fleet, because the waters out of La Paz are more subject to the rougher waters and also greener waters not conducive to very good fishing.

But, for the bite, we’re still getting some nice wahoo…some billfish…and dorado. Plus rooster fish seem to pop up ever few days as well. The problem now is that it’s not consistent. I tell folks there’s a big difference every day. If the blue water fish aren’t biting then the inshore fish like sierra, pargo and cabrilla be come the target or, if the waters are bouncy or rough, there’s just no way to go too far out and you’re relegated to staying closer inshore fishing structure fish like the species mentioned.

The rub is that it’s hard to tell which fish will bite when. We do keep an eye on the winds and generally speaking if the winds are blowing from the north, then we’re gonna be fishing inshore and there’s not too much chance of blue water species. However, that being said, we DID hook a striped marlin this week less than 50 yards from shore in only about 30 feet of water and some of the dorado we hooked this week were close to shore as well!

Mid-week, we got slammed by some incredible winds. Guts up to 50-70 mph ripped into the area and our normally placid seas turned into a cauldron we rarely see. Check out the waves hitting the breakwater at Las Cruces north of La Paz. That’s Cerralvo Island in the background.

DORADO BITE SANDWICHES BIG WINDS ROARING IN MID-WEEK

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Nov. 23-30, 2014

What a freakish week we had here in La Paz. This is the time of year when things transition from warmer conditions to cooler conditions. With it, we start to get more and more windy days with winds whipping from the north.

Well, lately, we’ve had more “breezy days.” That’s normal. It’s expected. I never expected what we had this week!

They talk about winter roaring in like a lion. Well, it didn’t just roar. It tore in like a freight train! Tuesday to Thursday, wind of 30-50 mph generated huge waves and gust up to 70 mph had the port captain closing down the port and keep folks off the water It was pretty incredible to watch…from the shore! Definitely NOT a good time to try to be on the water!

Huge waves crashed against beaches and against the concrete sidewalks of the waterfront Malecon throwing giant plumes of spray and water as far as parked cars across the street. Strolling pedestrians were sent scampering each time a wave crashed in much the same way that kids run through sprinklers in the summer except one could get seriously soaked by the giant swell. Even within the bay, it was uncharacterically white-capped and foaming. Many folks just parked themselves on the shore or in a nearby restaurant or bar to watch the display!

Then, on Friday, it pretty much disappeared!

And out we went fishing again. Just like before the storm, the dorado bit pretty readily with fish in the 20-30 pound class not uncommon but decent numbers of 10-15 pound fish as well. Some rooster fish and pargo were also hooked. The biggest issue was that those ripping winds really tore up the water and turned things over. For our guys who went out’ve La Paz, all the found was green and brown dirty water. The better fishing was from Las Arenas where the area was a bit more protected from the winds although waters were still not optimal. But at least we found fish!

Really hard to get a read on things. Not many folks in town or many fishermen as Thanksgiving week isn’t a big week here in La Paz for tourism. But, still a nice time to spend onshore as the sun was still comfortably warm. We’ll get a run of folks in between now and Christmas, but this week, was just nice to spend onshore and watching Mother Nature do her thing!

Jesse had one day to squeeze in for fishing and made the most of it with a nice rack of dorado to put in the freezer. If he’s not smiling, it’s cuz he told me had had a wahoo estimated at 60 pounds all the way to the boat before it broke loose!

Yes! There’s crazy roosterfish still around. They started showing up about a month ago and have been running up to about 50 pounds! Brian Mee from Eastern Washington was fishing light tackle and shows off a great sampel of the kind of roosters we’re getting. This big boy was released!

Carlos Cifuentes had never been fishing before he tried a day on the water with our Tailhunter Capt. Armando fishing from Bahia de los Muertos! They got 4 nice dorado and lost several others prompting Carlos to laughing tell us, “My shoulders are so sore! I never caught fish before like this!”

Some of the wahoo we’re getting are just minutes from leaving the beach just around the corner from Bahia de Los Muertos. Captain Jorge put the guys into this fat ‘hoo!

Our gran amigo, Art Savedra, the famous “Captain Hook” was here working the Baja 1000 race but stayed a few extra days to get in some fishing and scuba. He’s here on the beach with Captain Armando and dinner!

DORADO STILL AROUND BUT OTHER SPECIES HELP OUT AS COOLER CONDITIONS COME IN!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Nov. 16-23, 2014

A bit windier this week with a few days that were really bouncy, but still overall really pleasant conditions. But, as we get closer to winter we’re going to see more winds and especially winds from the north. But, for that very reason is why we’re doing most of our fishing from Las Arenas right now since we can launch from the beach at Bahia de Los Muertos where we’re a bit more protected from the winds and it’s also easier since the fishing is much closer…like RIGHT THERE!

I’m not kidding. We’re getting a variety of fish within minutes of where we launch. The bay itself is holding some decent rooster fish up to about 40 pounds. By the northern point of rocks, there’s jack crevalle and cabrilla. As soon as you pass the point, drop the lures and there’s always the possibility of wahoo literally within a hundred yards of the rocks! Go south or just outside to the buoys and you can hit dorado.

Anywhere in between, there’s also the chance of more wahoo, billfish (sails mostly), pargo, and bonito. Great variety and in between these gusty days, conditions are about as pleasant as you could want with air temps in the low 80’s and water temps just about the same. Just be flexible on your fishing days, if you can, in case the day you want to go out looks like the wind is going to kick in.

Keep an eye out as well. There’s so much sea life out there. Schools of dolphin…sea turtles…whalesharks…blue whales…manta rays. Pretty incredible time to be in La Paz!

We just wanted to take the time to wish you and your family a very peaceful and happy Thanksgiving. We’ve had a crazy tumultuous year here in La Paz. Mother Nature did what Mother Nature does and not much to be done about it except roll with it and try to keep smiling. Crazy El Nino year affected the fishing. Storms and hurricanes. Winds and heat…we pretty much had it all. But, through it all, so many of you kept us smiling and laughing and remembering how very blessed we are to even be here. Thanks for your support. Captain Armando helps Marty Koschnitzke with a nice bull dorado caught out’ve Bahia de los Muertos. Marty squeezed in a day of fishing and had a few dorado and other species put into the panga.

A much “larger model” for Mike Caray from Portland OR on his first trip with us fishing La Paz. Good day on dorado with our Tailhunter La Paz fleet.

SEASONS CHANGING – SO IS THE FISHING – AND THE FISHERMEN!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Nov. 2-9, 2014

After nervously watching to see if late-season hurricane “Vance” was going to make up it’s mind and give us a scare, it turned into not much of anything except a few raindrops and some wind! And we’re not complaining. It’s pretty late in the year to be seeing storms like this and, you can tell how many storms we have had by the fact that we’ve almost gone through the whole alphabet and are on letter “V” for “Vance.” I think we’ve had enough for awhile.

Anyway, in anticipation of some kind of stormy event, most folks stayed off the water Tuesday and Wednesday just as a precaution. Admittedly, Tuesday was really windy…far too windy to want to put anglers out there getting wet and bounced around. So, it was easier to just tell folks to hang out in town.

However, on the other days, we did have some OK dorado action with fish in the 10-20 pound class. Most of the bite was near the south end of Espirito Santo Island and near El Rosario plus just outside of Bahia de Los Muertos.

The latter area seems to hold the most variety right now as we transition towards cooler water fishing. In addition to the dorado, we also hooked a few billfish including sailfish and small striped marlin…pargo…cabrilla…jack crevalle and a few more of the decent sized 30-50 pound rooster fish. But, the majority of the bite this week consisted of a variety of inshore fish like the jacks, pargo and bonito..even some small amberjack and sierra which are normally cooler water fish. Fun light tackle action.

It will be interesting to see what we do with this full moon right now. But, as of mid-week it hasn’t affected the fishing very much. There’s a definite drop-off in the number of anglers this week as we head into November. So, that by itself makes it hard to gauge the fishing. It’s hard to be completely accurate. When there’s a large number of our anglers out there scattered over the fishing grounds, it’s easier to find the hot spots. Plus, the “anglers” are changing as well. From March to October, we have more hardcore anglers, but now with winter setting in, we have more snow-birds who just want some sunshine and maybe a day on the water fishing.

The ladies and the youngsters had a GREAT week! Like young Katylyn Luker from Santa Maria CA! Right out of the chute, her first fish on her first day is a big wahoo! Captain Moncho signals touchdown!

Another one of our amigas who had a banner week, Lisa Hicks from Seattle WA, put the hurt on this chunky wahoo at the south end of Cerralvo Island using a Rapala.

Vic Patton has been one of our regular amigos for many seasons! He and Captain Victor show off a real trophy…a dog-tooth snapper! Also called a Cubera Snapper, these are tough tough fish and getting the out’ve the rocks is an accomplisment!

Two more of our first-timers…Mike and Robbi Caray came down from their farm outside of Portland OR to enjoy some sunshine and had an incredible day on some big dorado like this 40 pound class beast! Mike fought this fish for over 45 minutes!

Andy Rafi Montejano rooster wahoo tags 10-14 small

Brothers Andy and Raphael Montejano had one of THOSE kinds of days…Andy nails this big rooster and Rafi put the hurt on a wahoo. It was their first time fishing and they also got dorado and snapper on an incredible day.

Our new amigo from Idaho, Tom Mullican, was here for almost two weeks of fishing. He was going to fish a few days then take some days off then fish a few more days. After two days of dorado fishing he decided he was having too much fun and booked fishing EVERY SINGLE DAY!

One of the nice surprises of the week was the appearance of the big roosters again. Captain Victor holds up a fish caught by John Hardardt. The fish was released. They are near the rocks just south of Bahia de Los Muertos.

Captain Boli help our long-time friend, John Ehlers from Denver CO, who just got done working at a lodge in Alaska and brought his family down to La Paz. John had a great week on dorado and other species with Captain Boli.

Another one of the nice wahoo we picked up this week, Rod and Nick get an assist from Captan Jorge with their “hoo while on the beach at Bahia de Los Muertos.

Brian Mee from Washington, shows another example of one of the crazy variety we had this week. Using light tackle, Brian brought back a catch of cabrilla and tasty sierra…usually not seen until our waters cool down.

Kris Honkola from San Rafael CA and his amigo, Marcus Dyster all the way from Finland , took this quick photo of one of their sailfish they caught north of La Paz. The sails were thicker than we’re normally used to!

Captain Archangel is all smiles with Mike Davis’ nice wahoo. Mike is from Santa Maria CA and got his first wahoo this week.

Hard to find someone more fun or enthusiastic than our Seattle buddy, Dan Hicks. And he knows how to fish too and loves the light tackle. He had a great week on the dorado!

Roy Zimmerman from Fullerton CA is one of our regular fishing amigos who always does well, but had a tough week on the fishing grounds. However, he DID catch and release this nice rooster south of Bahia de los Muertos.

CRAZY WEEK…NOT ALOT OF QUANTITY…BUT SOME GREAT QUALITY!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Oct. 25-Nov. 2, 2014

It was a different kind of week. It was good for good fish but not good for ALOT of fish! Let me explain…

You’ve heard of “Quality over Quantity.” Well, it was THAT kind of week. There were NOT alot of fish by our standards although there were some nice flurries of dorado, bonito, jack crevalle, sierra and other fish that kept rods bent.

But, those fish could be there one day and gone the next. Or they could be in one spot and move the next day or be there for 30 minutes of madness then the ocean would be calm again and not a fish in sight. That’s just the way it is right now. The seasons are changing. Water and air temperatures are cooling and we’re transitioning to the winter season which is approaching. Shadows are different. Current are different. The wind is starting to blow stronger from the north. It can be a little choppier. We’re going to get some days that the winds might even be too strong to fish comfortably.

The upside to all of this is that there are a tremendous number of species!

Just check out the photos!!!! We probably had as many as a dozen different species of fish…inshore…offshore…blue water…rock fish…We never knew what our folks were going to come back with.

And that’s what made this week really different.

We didn’t have LOTS of fish. We had a lot of DIFFERENT FISH. AND we had some real QUALITY FISH!

Like check out the wahoo this week! This had to be one of the best wahoo weeks of the season. We had one day when almost every one of our pangas hooked at least one wahoo around Cerralvo Island. And these were nice healthy 30-50 pound fish.

Also, for the first time in many months, we got 30-60 pound rooster fish and some huge dorado as well up to about 45 pounds and many others that were lost!

The dilemma in this kind of fishing is that you don’t get many chances. If the fish aren’t milling about, you might get one or two big bites…FOR THE ENTIRE DAY! It might be a big wahoo. It might be a big dorado or rooster fish. For whatever reason, if the fish gets off or you miss the bite or you have your beer in your hand…that’s it! It’s a missed opportunity and the rest of the day could be nothing more than a few bonito.

Or, conversely, there’s two anglers in a panga and one gets a trophy of a lifetime and the other guys twiddles his thumbs the rest of the day. So you get one really happy fella and one saying, “Fishing was really slow.”

One thing however…our ladies, kids and first-timers sure had it going on! Many of them got the big wahoo or big dorado and many of our veteran Tailhunter anglers were the “other guy” in the boat relegated to taking photos! But, it was great to see so many of the rookies kicking butt! Still…I won’t kid you. We did have some disappointed folks who ran into some tough fishing…which then often changed around the next day. Or not…

I think we’re gonna see more of these variable conditions in the next coming weeks as we transition into winter. Overall, however, you can’t ask for prettier conditions just to be here in La Paz. Days are not humid. Just nice sunshine and 85-90 degree air temps. It looks like a postcard. Most days are flat calm. The water is still in the 80’s. Night temps are comfortably in the 70’s.

One head’s up…looks like we do have a bit of rain coming this week with a late-season storm that could hit us mid-week and get us wet and stick us with some strong winds. Then, it moves off quickly.
