Yes, that’s our Captain Chito and Captain Luis out with family members and big load of meat including a big amberjack, yellowtail and dorado. This group knows how to fish!

Good guy, Gary Wagner, owner of the Giggling Marlin Bar in Cabo and Rancho Costa in Bahia Muertos with one of several dorado he took last week.

For real now, there aren’t many anglers or much of anyone in town. There weren’t many to begin with insofar as November to April is off-season, but usually this time of year, there’s an influx of spring breakers that descend on southern Baja and more snowbirds finally tired of cold winters north of the border.

However, that has pretty much come to a halt. Springbreakers understandably abruptly left. Actually, it was canceled. Lots of visitors have returned to their respective countries. Locals are hunkered down at the suggestion of the local, state and federal authorities. It’s kind of eerie out seeing much of anyone on eat beaches, streets, water, restaurants or bars. Much like the U.S. although to date, there has been only 1 confirmed case of the virus in Baja.

As we all know, changes have been almost daily, if not hourly and whatever you’re reading here could well have changed by that time.

Of course, as Murphy’s cruel law would have it, we probably just had one of the best fishing and weather weeks of the year.

Sardines and ballyhoo showed up for live bait. Even squid for the first time in years, got the commercial squid fishermen out to catch squid that came up from the deep trenches for the markets and for bait!

Winds settled down as well. So, with very few visiting anglers, captains were out catching fish for food and families taking friends, locals and family members out to fish.

With the good conditions, the production of a variety of fish was pretty remarkable. Yellowtail up to about 30 pounds were hitting off the structure and drop-offs. In those same areas, some 30-60 pound amberjack were also racked.

Over the reefs, some of those big tough pargo liso in the 15-20 pound range were getting hooked as well as an abundance of cabrilla and snapper plus bonito, jack crevalle, sierra and even some tuna were hooked (but not confirmed).

Later in the week, the winds came back and waters got colder and greener and the bite softened a bit, but overall a pretty good week to have been on the water!

Daytime temps are already in the low 80’s and supposedly the virus can’t survive in humidity and temperatures over 65. We’ll see. We can only hope.

JILL and I and TAILHUNTER STATUS

After almost 4 months on the road, Jilly and I returned to our house in the U.S. to a completely different world. Alot has changed since December as we all know.

Many of you who have followed our 2020 TAILHUNTER TOUR know that our last two shows in Salt Lake City and in San Diego got canceled so were involuntarily came back two weeks early to re-group and figure out what’s going on. Like you, we see things changing daily or even hourly. Like you we’re just waiting to see how this all plays out.

We did figure that in the last 3 months, we’ve probably come in contact with about 250,000 people in close-quarters while attending all these shows. We’ve been high-fiving, shaking hands, hugging and there’s hardaly any social distancing! We have stayed in hotel rooms and eating in restaurants every single day and night. That’s ALOT of contact!

We FEEL FINE. However, we don’t know if we might be carrying.

So, we’ve basically self-quarantined so we don’t infect anyone else. At least 14 days, we’re hunkered down just like so many of you! We’re hoping to return ASAP to our home in La Paz.

As far as fishing trips, many of you heard about the mutual agreement between Mexico and the U.S. to prohibit all non-essential travel. And everyone who was there visiting, has largely left to come home…or plans to stay for awhile. Alot of things are empty.

This obviously puts a big crimp in our fishing season which should have been just kicking off right now.

We have not gotten many cancelations. Most of our reservations for March, April and much of May simply postponed their trips to later dates and we are all just waiting-to-see what plays out. No one has lost their deposits or funds. Everyone is still credited if they have changed dates or postponed or, in the case of a rare cancelation.

In the meantime, I don’t know how often I’ll be posting fishing reports for a bit. I’ve only missed like…6 weeks in 24 years! But, hopefully, we can all get a handle on this and do the difficult things so we can get back to some normalcy as soon as possible.

ANGLERS FIND SMALL OPPORTUNITIES DESPITE WINDS

Just a great photo! They got blown off the first day but hung in there and went out despite waves and strong winds (check out Jan’s hair and Art’s hoodie). However, first-timer Jan Paisley and Art Flippin from Colorado went out dragging a Rapala hoping something would bite and this big 70-pound yellowfin tuna chomped the line! They were just off Punta Arenas with Cerralvo Island in the background. Surprise catch for this time of year!

Our good amigos, Donna and Roger Thompson from La Ventana found some mackerel on the east side of Cerralvo Island and hung some nice yellowtail before the macks disappeared and the winds came back up.

Escaping -30 degree weather up in Alberta, Canada, Sheri Maitland found sunshine and a school of dorado like this one just inside La Paz Bay on one of the calmer days.

That’s a tasty barred pargo for first-timer, Jan Paisley from Colorado with a big smile!

It looks a bit choppy out there and chilly, but Stu Maitland has a firm gaff in this nice dorado.

It was a weird unusual, but not unusual week, if that makes sense. Yes, it was typically windy as if often the case this time of year and “cold” on top of it (by Mexico standards!). Locals were bundled up while tourists visiting La Paz for sunshine were walking around in shorts and t-shirts.

However, as far as the wind was concerned, it blew hard some areas some days and less so in other areas. And, of course, it affected the fishing. Some folks fishing one area pretty much got blown off the water or had to cancel trips. Others found some decent windows to get lines wet, even if only temporarily before winds shifted and the waves just got too rough and choppy.

Fortunately, this time of the year, there aren’t that many folks fishing.

However, for the few folks out that were able to get on the water…even for a short time, there were some decent catches.

For our anglers fishing the Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay/ Cerralvo Island areas, there were the occasispeonal dorado and we even got a surprising chunky tuna that ran about 70 pounds taken on a trolled Rapala. On the East side of Cerralvo Island, there was a quick jag of yellowtail that ran 15-25 pounds, especially if you got into the live mackerel that temporarily schooled up.

Inshore, pargo, cabrilla and jack crevalle provided some fun entertainment.

For our anglers that were able to get out of the Bay and head north towards Espirito Santo Island, some yellowtail were also found, but it was pretty rough getting out there. Fortunately, there were some school-sized dorado just inside the bay that could be caught with most fish going about 10 pounds. But, it was stil pretty rough out there.

And more…BAHIA MAGDALENA!

We sent some anglers out with our Bahia Magdalena outfit. It was also too windy to fish outside the bay and work the ridge for yellowtail and grouper. However, inshore among the mangroves in the shallows, the fishing was spectacular. They got almost a dozen species! These included grouper, several species of pargo, snapper and seabass as well as corvina all on light tackle.

All by herself! Bella Nazareno hooked and fought all of her fish by herself including this fat pargo!

Also, the whales have been late arrivals for the whalewatching season, but more whales are finally showing up in Bahia Magdalena not far from where we’re fishing these days. Let us. know and we can set you up with a great whalewatching trip.

WINDOWS of OPPORTUNITY PRODUCE NICE MIX

From Richfield, Utah, Monte and Marlene Aldridge got in one day of fishing and picked the one day of the week when waters were calm enough and got some nice biters on some big sierra mixed in with dorado out’ve Bahia de Los Muertos south of La Paz.

Yup…it’s wintertime, but there’s still dorado around! Nice little bull mahi for Marlene.

Some great eating and great fun on light tackle, Monte has a speedy toothy sierra.

It pays to watch the weather. This past week there were some incredible uber windy and cold days. Normally, these are days we would recommend not going fishing. We even had some rain this past week. It happens. It’s winter. It’s off-season.

Some folks decided they still wanted to go fishing. So, off they went despite my warnings. Didn’t catch much of anything and it was so rough they had to come back early. We had others booked but had to cancel them because of the rough weather.

Honestly, only about 2 days this week would have been fishable at all.

However, we also had folks who were flexible on their fishing days and let me tell them when they should go fishing. And, sure enough, they found fish. Surprisingly, pretty decent fishing. Most amazing was the mixture of fish.

Cold-water fish like big sierra typical of this time of year were running 5-8 pounds. However, mixed right in were some school-sized dorado. The strange thing is that dorado are warm water fish that we usually catch during the warmer summer and fall months. So, they’re normally not running this time of year!

Along with those species, there were jags of bonito and scattered jack crevalle as well as snapper and cabrilla along the shoreslines where there was structure such as reefs, rocks and drop offs.

The weather makes all the difference. The coming week forecast mostly cloudy weather again to start the year with winds running 15-20 mph at times.

Typical winter rack of fish. Bonito, snapper, pargo and some nice cabrilla for the ice chest!

The rocks are holding some nice cabrilla right now…if you can pull them from their hiding spots! They’re feisty fish when hooked.

Mostly a quiet Christmas and holiday week in La Paz. Sun’s out. Occasionally some showers and breezy. Most folks in town aren’t here to fish or hit the water. Those that are in town for watersports are windsurfers and kiteboarder taking advantage of the strong winter winds. Or they’re here to swim with the whalesharks in the bay.

The few that are out fishing are mostly finding action inshore along the rocks and beaches.

It’s not bad fishing at all. There’s been a decent bite on some nice cabrilla up to about 10 pounds with most in the 2-5 pound range and lots of little ones getting released. Snapper were also on the chew. All good fish for the table. The biggest issue is getting live bait. If waters are rough and winds are blowing, getting live bait in the shallow areas where the bait school-up can be problematic. If bait is an issue, slow trolling small crankbaits like Rapalas, Rebels, Yo-Zuri, Mirolures or similar can still be very productive and fun.

Moving slightly offshore, bonito are still there for some harder battles as well as jack crevalle. There’s a chance of an occasional dorado as well. I’m surprised we aren’t getting into more sierra as this is the time of year we should be getting them, but perhaps we’ll see more as the waters get cooler.

The Big Picture and the Rest of the Story…

Amigo, Roger Thompson made it out to the south end of Cerralvo Island between bouts of wind and trolled up this nice wahoo.

Roger was pulling a dark Rapala looking for wahoo when this hefty yellowfin tuna ripped his line.

Typical catch right now…some inshore reef fish like the cabrilla and trigger fish; mix in some bonito and a bonus dorado. All close to shore.

Not too many folks fishing these days in the gap between Thanksgiving and Christmas and town almost seemed deserted this week, but the crowds will eventually come.

The city is nicely moving into Christmas mode!

Winds were a little milder than normal so some folks were able to get out fishing. Most of the fishing was inshore for jack crevalle, snapper, and cabrilla, although some larger pargo were reportedly lost. Bonito schools can be problematic or a lot of fun depending on your point of view.

There are still some small schools of dorado running around with most fish in the 10-15 pound class.

When winds are down, there’s some good action with bait on light tackle for some nicer grade of tuna in the 40-80 pound range that can be tough battles on the smaller line that get them to bite. Rapalas like the darker deep-runners also kicked up some wahoo.

Gary Wagner has caught lots of big fish, but knew he had a battle on his hand when he switched down to 25-pound test fluorocarbon and this big yellowfin tuna bit the lines. He was on the fish for more than 3 ½ hours! Gary owns the Giggling Marlin Bar in Cabo San Lucas but was staying at his Rancho Costa in Muertos Bay near Las Arenas.

Don Fee was in town from Florida and we got him out on the water for one day for his first time and he said he had bites all day producing some dorado, cabrilla, bonito and even some small roosterfish.

He said he was embarrassed to admit this fish took about 4 hours to put in the boat, but Roger Thompson has caught bigger tuna, but few that were this scrappy and he had to do it on 40 pound test. “It pulled the panga,” he told us. Roger was fishing the south side of Cerralvo Island across from Las Arenas.

Don caught and released a couple of these fiesty little roosterfish in Bahia Muertos. He let them grow so they’ll be the big 60-pounders in the spring-time!

Great eating pargo! Gary said he could have caught these all day long on light tackle just south of Bahia Muertos towards Boca de Alamo.

There were some blustery days that it was good no one was fishing, but there were some nice days too. The problem was…no one was fishing! Snow birds have started to descend on La Paz to enjoy the sunshine and our new Malecon, but the off-season has started and not much of anyone fishing these days because the winds are unpredictable.

However, we did have some folks out and on the days it wasn’t bumpy and windy, there were some fish to be caught.

Most suprising were the big tuna hung on the south side of Cerralvo Island. Go figure. Everyone leaves and all the fishermen are pretty much gone and the big tuna show up.

These were pretty beastly animals. The ranged from 60-100 pounds and there weren’t many of them, but the ones that did bite would only eat light line which is incredibly problematic when you are using 25-40 pound line and a powerful tuna crunches your bait. These fish required 3-4 hours of backbreaking battles to get them to the boats!

For other species, there’s still some decent dorado around running 10-15 pounds or so. Not a lot, but enough to keep it interesting. Mix in some bonito, jack crevalle, a few pargo and snapper and the occasional little roosterfish and it could be a fun day.

“Birthday Bob” Layko always visits us each year on his birthday with cousin Craig Brown. Got himself a wahoo and some dorado too with Captain Armando.

A two-hour battle for Eric Gunnels from Phoenix, produced this 70 pound tuna. It doesn’t look like it from the angle, but we put it on a certified scale. Captain Chito give the thumbs-up. Big tuna made an appearane between La Paz and Espirito Santo Island.

First-timer Steve Kunzler from Utah found dorado fishing to his liking.

Kyle Muir is from Beaverton OR, but skippers for Vonnie’s Fishing Charters up in Sitka, Alaska. He’s got a pair of bulls in hand.

From Denver, Bobby Hart had never fished in salt water before let alone been to Mexico, but his very first day hooked this trophy roosterfish off Punta Arenas. The fish was released.

Our good amiga from Richfield, UT, Marlene Aldridge, has a big smile and 3 nice doardo on the cutting board.

On their way in from fishing out’ve La Paz, Dale and Daryl Martz from Colorado and Alan Martz from Boston hold up some of their catch.

Ten-year-old Carter Hart hooked this bull dorado north of La Paz. On just 30-pound-test the youngster battled the fish for 20 minutes refusing offers of help and got it to the boat all by himself.

Bob Sayre was battling a bonito when a big wahoo came swimming around the panga. Just like that…in one bite..the wahoo scissored the back-half-of his bonito with it’s sharp teeth and swam away. Eat-and-run!

We have definitely had better weeks of fishing this season. Overall, it was probably the most disappointing and difficult fishing of the year and the captains and clients really had to work hard for their fish.

It started with a combination of several factors and it took quite awhile to recover and it’s taking a long time to get back up to speed.

However, kicking off the week with the tail end of that huge 30-hour rainstorm and subsequent sporadic rains in the following days not only required that we cancel a day of fishing; but the rain sent lots of run-off into the ocean, muddying the waters. Winds that persisted all week, including strong northern winds that are the vanguard indicator that the season is coming to an end, not only made it bumpy and rough to fish, but also cooled down surface water temperatures. Add in a full moon and choppy waters and it was a round-house kick to the head.

Any singular variable or even two of those things would not have impeded the bite much…if at all…but that combination of wind, waves, rain and a full moon put the hex on things.

It has been taking it’s time recovering, if at all. With the continued north winds, that means we’re heading into the off-season and it might probably be getting rougher and more difficult to fish. That being said, the fishing did improve little-by-little every day although still relatively slow compared to what it had been before the storms.

Dorado were the mainstay action with fish mostly 10-20 pounds. Bonito were mostly plentiful to the point of being a nuisance, but together with jack crevalle, small roosterfish, pargo, cabrilla and snapper at least kept rods bent most of the time.

Most exciting were the boiling tuna that showed up between La Paz and Espirito Santo Island. Fish between 50 and 150 pounds came up several times and really rocked a few of our anglers who battled fish up to 4 hours. All except ome fish…about a 70-pounder…were lost. The angler on the 70 pounder battled for 2 hours to get the fish aboard.

Other species included pompano, sierra, amberjack and triggerfish.

THE BIG PICTURE and the REST of the STORY…

Firefighters Tim Nishimura and Scott Johnson from the Sacramento CA area have been coming for years to fish around La Paz and have caught almost every fish in the area. However, the wahoo have been elusive until this week when they were out with their favorite Captain Gerardo of the Tailhunter Fleet and they each finally got their wahoo as well as a 3rd ‘hoo as well while trolling Rapalas.

John Kennedy from Auburn, California tries to make a yearly trip to La Paz to fish with the Tailhunter Fleet and his favorite Captain Victor. He was with Victor when they caught a bonito and Victor quickly grabbed it; put it on a heavier rig; and went over to shallow water where they hooked and landed this whopper dog-tooth snapper. John said they lost several others that they couldn’t stop.

Beautiful photo and beautiful dorado for Don Vegter from Redondo Beach CA with Captain Gerardo goofing off behind the shot. The fish was Don’s personal best dorado and caught on live bait near Punta Arenas.

There’s a zillion reasons to love this photo of Roger Thompson and this big ‘hoo! He said it was almost an instant biter upon dropping the lures back. He was fishing with Captain Hugo.

There are good days fishing and then there are REALLY good days fishing! Their first vacation in 25 years, Kimberlee and Kurt Cochran run a commercial fishing operation in Homer, Alaska. Their first day out was with Captain Moncho. They got their first marlin but look at the table in front…a huge wahoo…dorado…cabrilla…triggerfish too.

Our long time friends from Sacramento, Dennis Fujii and Wayne Kurahara start off with some good-sized dorado.

Making his 2nd trip in 2019 to see us, Chad McConnell from Arizona hung this colorful bull mahi fishing on Captain Alfredo’s boat.

I don’t know if this is his first or his 2nd wahoo, but Andy had never fished before and he takes down TWO wahoo! Awesome!

There were a few tuna here and there like the one Captain Jorge is holding and some nice bit of dorado to take home for Lon Tsukamoto and Walt Menda.

This is a pig of a tuna! Dave Lindell from Pendleton OR has fished with us for many years and caught lots of fish, but this one was a bruiser and estimated between 70-80 pounds. Captain Armando gives a hand . Dave fought the fish almost 90 minutes!

First time with us from Denver, Jaren Jackson and Mike Miller got themselves a pair of fast-moving wahoo trophies.

Now, this beats starting your day on the freeway any day! Don Vegter got his first wahoo at daybreak outside Bahia Muertos.

Captain Gerardo was on fire this week. Another wahoo, this time with Joe Cameron.

Bob McPhee came down with 6 of his buddies to celebrate their 50th birthday…all of them! And catch some dorado too!

Again…Andy’s first time ever..and he catches two wahoo. This might be the 2nd wahoo.

A last minute trip and they made good with a stack of dorado for Fionne and his dad, Bill Dingwell from Chandler AZ. They also squeezed in a day of diving as well.

Captain Jorge took this photo for me of the beach at Punta Arenas as the storm approached us Sunday and why we figured it was a good day to cancel the boats and not take any chances.

It was a pretty solid week of fishing mostly with fairly good conditions and cooperative fish until the end of the week when heavy rains arrived and put a damper on the bite and fishermen’s spirits.

Dorado continued to be the mainstay and if you wanted a dorado, they were 80% of the catch and found in a wide area by both our Tailhunter Las Arenas and our Tailhunter La Paz fleets. La Paz seemed to have more fish most days, but Las Arenas had the larger fish. Some days were better than others. Some boats did better than others. Some days, La Paz had the better bite but the next day, Las Arenas would have the hot honey holes.

Most fish were 10-20 pounders. Lots of little dorado were released.

The true highlight of the week was the heightened action on the wahoo. This time of year is historically good for wahoo, but until this past week or so, the wahoo weren’t showing much interest in biting.

However, each day wahoo were hooked and lost by our anglers fishing around Cerralvo Island as well as Punta Perrico and in the channel between the island and Punta Arenas. Fish were between 20-and 50 pounders and most were caught trolling with dark-colored Rapalas or Yo-Zuri Magnums. Quite a few fish were lost and there were a few days when several of our pangas boated multiple wahoo.

Other catches this week included hook-ups and both blue marlin and striped marlin and a sprinkling of yellowfin tuna. Most were large footballs but one 50 pounder and another in the 70-80 pound class. We also got a few of the big dog-tooth snapper, as well as cabrilla, pargo, triggerfish, some sierra, amberjack and lots of bonito!

It was all going well until it started to rain later Saturday afternoon. And rained…and rained. Through Sunday forcing us to cancel trips. It wasn’t a strong rain. Just a steady rain. Not a hurricane, but interestingly, more rain fell from this “rainstorm” than Hurricane “Lorena” several weeks ago. We experienced power outtages and some areas had big areas of flooding. Hopefully, by the time you are reading this, we’ll be back on the water.

MAGDALENA BAY REPORT

John Kennedy has been a long-time Tailhunter amigo and he waited 2 years to do one of our light tackle trips to fish the mangroves in Bahia Magdalena. In just 1 day of fishing, Tom estimated he caught at least 10 different species including, corvina, pargo, dog-tooth snapper, grouper, cabrilla, sheephead, grunt, triggerfish and more.

TUNA and WAHOO FINALLY?

THE BIG PICTURE and the REST of the STORY…

You never forget the first. Especially, when you have been trying for years like John Gibbs and Wiley Randolph who visit us every year and finally nailed their first wahoo…on the same day…on the same panga with Captain Pancho.

First day and first time fishing with us, Steve Salbeck, rocked this big dog-tooth snapper with Captain Moncho. That’s alot of meat for the ice chest.

Funny shot with Dana Murray our amigo from Washington who has a tuckered tongue out hefting this 50-pound class tuna to pose with Captain Armando.

A sweet-looking bull dorado and blue water! Brian Schwalbe gets some grins with Captain Luis who caught this with our Tailhunter La Paz fleet.

Enjoying some Baja sunshine from Montana where it was snowing 30″ this week, Pepper Paul Hamlin has a couple of nice bull dorado and a great shirt!

This trio is trouble and always having fun catching a big rack of dorado to match their shirts, Nino Bonfiglio, Captain Victor and Jim Gatti.

Mark Self just had one day to fish and got one of the largest dorado of the week.

Wiley’s biggest dorado ever despite many trips to fish with us here in La Paz! He was fishing north of La Paz near Espirito Santo Island.

Brian had himself a nice week of fishing with this marlin his largest of the week and he shared the meat with his group.

Check out Al Jones and the variety of fish on the cutting board. He’s got dorado, white bonito, cabrilla, triggerfish and yellow snapper.

Our newly retired forestry amigos from Carson City NV, on their 2nd trip with us got a pile of dorado, triggerfish, pompano and jack crevalle.

Kim Bell fought this nice plug yellowfin tuna for 45 minutes all by herself as it pulled the panga around. Good job!

This is just funny…it’s not every day that the police inspector on the beach let’s loose and poses with the fishermen, but Angelo Oliverio, Captain Armando and Ken Campbell get a thumbs-up from the big man!

We probably could not have asked for a better week. The seasons are changing and to go along with mild sunny temperatures and cool tropical breezes, the fish were on their game finally!

Whether you fished with our Tailhunter La Paz Fleet or our Tailhunter Las Arenas Fleet, there was no shortage of action. Occasionally, one boat might be off-target, but for the most part, it was all the dorado you could possibly stand!

Limits or near limits of mahi were common with lots more released for being too small or over-limits. We had some boat on some days back on the beach by 10 or 11 a.m. with happy anglers ready to hit the pool, nice lunch and a siesta!

If there was any difference between our two fleets, the dorado seemed larger for our Tailhunter Las Arenas Fleet and for our La Paz Fleet, there were a lot more fish. .. but they tended to be smaller. Most fish ran 10-15 pounds with occasional 20-35 pounders and larger fish lost.

In between the dorado, add a smattering of hard-fighting bonito, jack crevalle, a pargo or cabrilla and too many pesky needlefish and it was usually a fully day of bent rods and grinning clients!

The highlights of the week were surely the jags of yellowfin tuna that finally popped up and landed in the boats. Best spots were with our Tailhunter Las Arenas fleet using live bait with the fish as small as footballs but as large as 50-pounders. I wouldn’t go so far as saying we have a “tuna bite” starting up, but it’s encouraging to finally see some tuna in the boxes.

Even better was that we finally hit some wahoo as well. We’ve been getting teased by biters for that last week or two, but none of the fish stuck and it’s been months since one was landed. We lost a few more this week, but at least we also got some onto the gaffs and onto the fish cleaning tables. They were nice 20-45 pound ‘hoos!

Waters are cooling down. Air temps are very moderate with minimal humidity. Breezes are coming more from the north so the season is changing. It’s really really pleasant here right now.

HURRICANE LORENA…FULL MOON…MARLIN INSANITY?

I shot this earlier than normal…two days before the end of the week as Hurricane Lorena was about to hit us and I did not know at the time if we would lose electricity and internet. Plus, I had a feeling that the rest of week we’d have to cancel fishing for a day or two. So, it’s a little longer than normal as well because there was alot to chat about!

THE BIG PICTURE and the REST of the STORY…

Hurricane Lorena was supposed to have veered off, but at the last minute came straight for us. It could have been alot worse as it dropped rain and wind on us for about 12 hours before moving on. The biggest issue was that we had to cancel fishing and diving and lots of folks got stuck when the airlines shut down or the airport got closed.

What an incredible marlin bite we had! For several days mid-week we had the best marlin fishing we have ever seen where almost every panga each day hooked 1-4 marlin like the Lauby Brothers…Justin and Noah…who hooked for marlin in 2 days. Most fish over the week were released and much meat was donated.

One of our newest funnest Tailhunter tribe members, Mari Bedsaul had some fun with us and got into some of that fun dorado fishing with Captain Alfredo.

Captain Arcangel looks like he’s checking the teeth of this big roosterfish…or looking for the hook so they can release it! But nice first rooster for Jon Sparks! And yes…they were able to release it!

The biggest tuna of the week and her first ever for Kasey Dewey from Washington. Tough fish, especially for a first-timer and she did great!

April Perry, husband Ryan and brother Taylor Sering got this blue marlin in that great marlin bite this week tag-teaming the rod on light tackle! One of the few blues that was caught. Most of the fish were able to be released and much meat was donated.

Dave Sowards has been visiting us for several years and always seems to do well. He got this striper with Captain Chito and had several others on as well.

That’s quite a table of fish for Larry Axtell and Clint Lowe from Idaho with Captain Fili including dorado, triggers and jack crevalle.

Yes, there’s still lots of big hard-charging jack crevalle around to bend rods like this bad boy caught by Stefan Zeltvay. Cousin to the roosterfish, the Mexican name for them is “toro” (bull) for good reason. They are roosterfish without the headgear!

Wow…what a week!

Initially with the full moon, I was wondering if the lunar phase would affect the nice dorado bite we had been having. I’m not a big believer in how the moon affects our fishing down here, but you just never know!

So, the week kicked off with no big change in the dorado bite. In fact, it got better and the fish got bigger! Especially for our Tailhunter La Paz fleet, it was pretty typical to get limits of 10-20 or 25 pound dorado and then catch and release many many more. Lots of fun!

But, then the craziest thing happened…

The marlin went crazy nut insane! In 25 years here, I have never seen anything like it. For 4 days, almost all our pangas were hooking 1-4 marlin per boat per day! Stripers up to 120 pounds! Blue Marlin in the 150-250 pound range! We even had a 600 pound marlin at one point.

Here’s what some of our folks said:

“We had two marlin on the line and another one came up and bit a 3^rd rod the captain had in the water. He was trying to figure out which marlin to chase after with the boat!”

“We hooked and released two marlin and tried to get away from them and moved the boat. Two marlin swam after the boat like they wanted to be fed!”

“Our panga was in the middle of the dorado school and we had two fish one and I happened to look down and saw a marlin just kinda hanging under the boat. Then, I felt a bump and realized there was another marlin bumping the boat!”

“Pretty exciting stuff. In 3 days, we hooked and released 5 marlin on light tackle including 4 stripers and 1 blue. My wife says she loves fishing now! Our last fish we were on our way in and had one rod out with a little feather and a striper bit it!”

The big issue was that so many of these fish showed up while guys were going full-turbo in the dorado schools. Consequently, they were fishing with light 30 and 40 pound test…small hooks and small baits when the marlin bit. Many of the marlin were not only eating the baits, but also eating the dorado.

On light tackle, the fights were long and epic.

The bad thing was that many folks tried to release fish but the fish were exhausted. We released the majority of the fish, but some were not able to be released but many of our anglers donated meat to needy folks here in town. Also, because of the small hooks and lines, the marlin were swallowing the hooks all the way down and that also made it difficult to release fish!

The other aspect is that as long as some fights were…others were short and some of the larger fish, especially, the blue marlin were lost! By day 3, many of our captains were putting some heavier gear aboard!

Then…Hurricane Lorena showed up!

Relatively small compared to many others, but it started heading towards Baja and really didn’t look like much other than maybe a little wind and rain. Then, the “Hurricane Watch” became Hurricane “Warning.” It was definitely headed up to Baja! However, the initial advisories indicated it would veer off to the Pacific and La Paz would only get the edge of the storm.

However, as sometimes happens, late Friday, the storm turned and put us right in the crosshairs on a direct collision. So…

C’mon man…you said you weren’t going to hit us!

Airports closed…flights got canceled…the port closed and no boats were allowed out…folks started getting ready with water, candles, flashlights and extra beer. A lot of our anglers got stuck for an extra night or two unable to leave. Others trying to get in couldn’t fly down because of canceled flights or the closed Cabo Airport.

When the storm finally hit, it was a lot weaker than so many storms we’ve had, but enough to drop wind and rain on us for about 12 hours and keep everyone pinned indoors all night watching the storm. Fortunately, other than some flooding and downed trees, no one was hurt and very little property damage. It was just a big wet “inconvenient” pain-in-the-butt!

Frankly, many of our clients partied and rolled with it and were very patient with us and the circumstances. However, I felt badly for those that lost fishing days or got stuck one way-or-the-other.

As of Saturday morning the airports opened and normalcy started returning as we dried out and dug out.

Not sure how this will affect the fishing but we’ll keep you posted!
