WEEK at A GLANCE

Water – Warming and better and flatter this past week.  Coming week maybe not so much.

Weather – Mid 80’s now.  Bring the sunscreen.  Breezy at times, especially the afternoons

Fishing – Much better . Alot of vareity as warm water fish move in and mix with colder water fish

Catching – Lost alot of larger fish!

THE BIG PICTURE

Whoa! Just off the rocks, Jeff Brown and his son, Cole, were with Captain Joel Martinez from the Tailhunter Fleet in La Paz catching smaller snapper, pargo and cabrilla when this big grouper gulped Jeff’s live bait in shallow water and they were able to winch it away from the rocks! Jeff and Cole are from Minnesota and come down every year to La Paz for sunshine and fishing!

Steve and son, Ben Fox from Huntington Beach were visting La Paz for the first time and got into some of those Cerralvo Island yellowfin tuna their first day on live bait.

Good amigo from Wrangell, Alaska, Rod Brown comes down every year for about 10 days of fishing and got a variety of fish again this year. He took yellowtail, snapper, pargo, cabrilla, jacks, tuna and bonito among others while fishing north around Espirito Santo Island.

First-timer with a big smile, Cole Brown, and a real colorful dorado among several he caught fishing with our La Paz fleet.

Love how he fishes! Light tackle and top-water jigs! Miles Wagner from Colorado Springs with one of his nice dorado fishing out’ve Muertos Bay/ Las Arenas.

This kind of fishing is a hoot! Like tackle right up in the rocks for cabrilla, snapper and pargo. All great eating and these are tough fish on light or heavier tackle. Larger fish all lost in the rocks! Cole and dad, Jeff Brown, with Captain Joel.

Anyone who asks me about getting bluewater fish and not believing that the fish can be caught close to shore, take a look at the rocks just behind Jeff and Cole Brown holding a legit yellowfin tuna. Yup…just a few yards off the island!

OVERALL…

Looks like the weather is clearing up just in time for the season to kick off with alot more of our fishermen now arriving in La Paz.  There’s still some wind on tap for this coming week and indeed we had some this past week, but overall, a big improvement in not only the weather, but the fishing, catching, and variety!  Each week seems to get a little better as things warm up!  It’s all about the winds.  If the winds are gone, there’s fish starting to bite.

All signs are encouraging as just to the south of us along the East Cape, things are already starting to go off with the fishing so those conditions are moving north towards us!

LAS ARENAS/ MUERTOS BAY/ SUENOS BAY

It’s not crazy good…yet!  But the fishing is more like May fishing with lots of different variety in the water.  Inshore, pargo liso (mullet snapper), pargo per (dog-tooth snapper) and pargo mulatto (barred pargo) are biting along with several types of snapper, jack crevalle, bonito and cabrilla.

In the deeper water but not far off, dorado are around between 5 and 20 pounds although not in great numbers plus yellowtail up to 25 pounds.  Plus we found some tuna over at nearby Cerralvo Island although, again, not in great numbers.  Some wahoo were seen, but didn’t bite and commercial guys said billfish look like they’re moving into the area.

LA PAZ

For the first time all year, we had some consistent fishing for our La Paz Fleet.  Normally, with the winds blowing in from the north, it’s just often too rough to even get out’ve the bay or, when you get to the spots, it’s hard to fish the areas.

However, with some pretty good post-Easter conditions, I was blown away by the variety of species that ended up on the hook!  We didn’t find quantity of fish, but the variety was remarkable especially for inshore species.  This included several species of pargo, snapper, cabrilla, grouper, jacks and bonito.  As well, we hooked some yellowtail up to about 20 pounds and even got a tuna about 50 yards from the rocks!

BAHIA MAGDALENA

Ben Fox from Huntington Beach CA shows off a nice snook he caught light tackle fishing inside the shallow waters of Bahia Magdalena with Tailhunter Sportfishing. He and his dad caught snook, snapper, pargo, cabrilla and other species using live shrimp and spinning gear.

That’s quite a box of pargo and snapper!

Almost all the fish was donated to the local church to clean and distribute.

We had anglers fishing our inshore waters with light tackle again and they scored great.  Using live shrimp for bait, they rocked snook, cabrilla, corvina and several kinds of snapper working in the shallow waters and in the eddys and backbays and sandbars among the trees.

PAST WEEK AT A GLANCE

Water – Not bad. Getting warmer. Still stronger currents than we’d like

Temps – Mid 80’s day time.  Pleasant nights.  Still really windy about 1/2 the days

Fishing – I’d give it a 4 on a scale of 10, but 4 is better than it’s been.  Alot of variety and good fish signs

Catching– I’d give it a 4 also.  Could be alot better.  And I think it will get better as things get warmer and water and wind settles down more and more.

What Got Caught – Dorado, yellowtail, jack crevalle, bonito, yellow snapper, red snapper, pargo liso, pargo perro, barred bargo, triggerfish, bonito,, cabrilla, palometa, pompano, corbina

 

THE REST OF THE STORY

Our amigo for many years, Mitch Chavira has been fishing La Paz almost as long as we’ve been there. He knows his stuff and knows his way around throwing iron too. He jigged up this toad cabrilla off Espirito Santo Island.

Gary and Miles Wagner from Colorado Springs, Colorado fished inside the mangroves of Bahia Magdalena on a day Gary said, “The winds outside were blowing 40K!” and did great on the corvina and palometa on light tackle!

Two of the best fishermen, Mitch and Charlie “Stix” McGee from San Diego working just inside of La Paz Bay put the wood to some of those nice dorado that have shown up.

All the way from Germany, Claude Demith got himself some great eating variety…dorado…dog tooth snapper (cubera)…big triggerfish…and cabrilla!

Just in time for Spring Break / Semana Santa and Easter,  the winds kinda gave us a bit of a break this week.  There were still some really windy days, but at least there were some windows of opportunity.  Definitely, more folks in town for vacation.  More fishermen on the water and for sure…the beaches are just jammed.

Normally, our beaches are pretty empty, but during Semana Santa, it looks like Woodstock!  Makes you wonder where everyone is the rest of the time?  I mean, on some beaches, there’s not a square inch of empty space and in Mexico, the beaches are public so you can pretty much camp and picnic anywhere and anytime.  Afterwards, it makes for quite a clean-up as you might imagine.  At least, it’s once a year and everyone is having a good time.

Anyway, for fishing, the fish are there!  If the windows of opportunity are open and the waters are fishable, the bite is there to be had!  It’s far from wide-open, but fishing is alot better than might be expected with alot of variety possible.

LAS ARENAS/ MUERTOS BAY

 

It’s evident that the waters are changing.  We have quite a bit of transition going on with both warm and cold water fish occupying the same water space!  I’m surprised that this early in the year, we have some dorado, tuna and billfish around.  Normally, we don’t see those until maybe a month or more from now.  Not alot of these species, but any day holds its possibilities.

Likewise, there are still cold water species around as well.  Cabrilla, snapper and Sierra were caught this week as well as several species of pargo (dog-tooth/ cubera snapper and barred pargo).  Plus, add in the usual jack crevalle and lots of bonito on top of things and, you’re not quite sure what’s gonna bite.

Every day is not good.  Every boat is not catching fish.  I want to be honest about it.  But there’s fish there and the signs are encouraging.  It was one of the better weeks in awhile.  We’re using a combination of live bait, dead bait, jigs and Rapalas for the days.

LA PAZ

With the wind having backed down a bit this past week…with no guarantees of next week…we had some boats finally able to get out.  Again, just like at Muertos/ Las Arenas, there was a combination of cold and surprisingly warm water fish.  A few yellowtail and pargo around but maybe we’re not going to see much of a yellowtail season this year because the waters are getting warm quick as evidenced by a few tuna popping up plus there seems to be dorado right in La Paz Bay!  We don’t usually see mahi mahi in the bay until much later in the year.  The ones we’re seeing now are legit 10-20 pound fish! Plus, there’s sardines around too.  All good signs!

GASTRONIMICA LA PAZ 2018 – MAY 4

 The 2018 La Paz Gastronomica Food Festival will be held May 4 once again on the beach in La Paz.  If you’ve never been to it the massively fun food festival draws thousand of visitors and over 100 restaurants, hotels and culinary schools from La Paz as well as Todos Santos and Cabo San Lucas.

For one ticket price, you get to eat and sample all kinds of great regional Mexican foods…all you can eat…shrimps, clams, oysters, roasted pig, all types of tacos, moles, Italian food, Chinese, Thai,  desserts ,baked goods…everyone has a booth.  And so do the wine, tequila and beer distributors as well so it’s all the tequila, wine an cerveza you can handle as well.

Great music, bands and entertainment and it goes well past midnight and just an incredible event.  Each year, Tailhunter Restaurant also has a booth among the “seafood row” vendors!  Last year, we had our famous Hawaiian poke!

NOT MUCH TO TELL YOU THIS WEEK

THE REST OF THE STORY…

Jorge Romero with one of the rare quality fish picked up the whole week and has a nice yellowtail in hand he caught with sardines. He also said there were quite a few bonito, but overall no one was getting too much of anything, Nice shirt!

There were few bright spots for fishing this past week as it was mostly a windy, cloudy rough time.  It’s fairly common during the winter months which is why we don’t have many folks fishing during these months.  We had one or two days at most that were somewhat fishable and even then, it was picky fishing at best.  Some snapper…some pargo…a few cabrilla…and a few yellowtail were about it.  Oh, and alot of bonito for some grateful action.  And that was the whole enchilada for the week.  Fortunately, not many anglers.  However, with spring break and Easter on it’s way, things are going to start getting crowded and we can only hope the weather and winds drop back a notch or two.  Early predictions so far look a bit iffy.  Just being honest.

TAILHUNTER 2018 ROAD TOUR COMES TO AN END!

 

After almost 4 months on the road and a journey that started back in December and took us through Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, Colorado, Wyoming, Idaho, Nevada, Utah, California, Washington and Oregon…we come to the end of the road.

Jilly wrapped things up a the Fred Hall Show in San Diego.  I was out in the Phoenix, Arizona area with the International Sportsmans Expo.  Both shows were super and good to see so many Tailhunter tribe members and new amigos!

Its been another epic road tour after 23 years and we are so grateful to everyone who took the time to come see us all of the hunting and fishing shows.  It was great and we appreciate all the smiles and hospitality.  God bless you all!

To those of you who signed up to come visit us this year fishing in La Paz, let’s get going!  We’re gonna have a great season and we’re looking forward to seeing you down with us.  We have to unpack the van and the cat and then saddle up and get home to La Paz right after Easter.  So, we’ll see you down there!  Thanks again.

Well, the good news is that after 3 weeks, the winds settled down a bit and allowed us to get to do a bit of fishing.  The bad news is that well…there weren’t many fishermen.  Fairly typical for this time of year.  Further bad news is that the winds are supposed to jump back up this coming week!

Oh well, you just roll with it because that’s how it is during the winter months.  For all the lack of fishermen right now, with Easter coming up April 1, those are the busiest times for travel to Mexico and especially places like Baja and particularly La Paz where we are.  Not necessarily gringos looking to party and kick it up during spring break, but for Holy Week and the dates around Easter, these are the busiest travel times for Mexicans.  Moreso than Christmas or any other time of the year, Mexicans visit and travel outside the country, but also many Mexicans living in the U.S. and other places take the time to visit their friends and relatives back home.  Likewise, domestically many locals travel to visit during this time.  What that means is that many otherwise “empty” beaches are going to be packed with folks camping and picnicking all week.  Many will be fishing too so expect that in about 2-3 weeks, it’s going to be jammed.

Anyway, on the days we could fish, we got out and got an interesting mix.  Coldwater species like snapper, cabrilla, pargo, jack crevasse and yellowtail mixed it up with warm water species like dorado and even a few tuna and lots of bonito. The better action and most consistent bite was in shallow waters over structure for the colder water species using Rapalas, live bait and dead bait.  We found fish close and around Punta Perrico and also at the north and south ends of Cerralvo Island.

After almost 3 1/2 months on the road with our 23rd year kicking off, we have just two more shows to do before going home.  We just finished up the ISE Show in Sandy, UT, just south of Salt Lake City and a big “GRACIAS!” to everyone who came by to say hello and to those of you who booked with us, we’re sure looking forward to your visit!

So now…Jilly and I go in different directions again.

The Mexican Minute La Paz Video Report for Week of March 4-11, 2018

IF ONLY THE WIND WOULD TAKE A BREAK FOR AWHILE!

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay/ Suenos Bay Fishing Report for Week of March 4-11, 2018

If there’s a fish, Kevin Shiotano usually finds one and it’s usually pretty respectable like this nice yellowfin tuna off Cerralvo Island.

It wasn’t a great week for fishing, but there also weren’t many fishermen either, which is typical this time of year.  And for good reason.  It can be rough and windy which is what we had this week.  After a few nice weeks of fishable weather, we’ve now had about 3 consecutive weeks where the majority of days weren’t exactly conducive to fishing.  On those days fishing was scratchy at best.  A few snapper.  Some small cabrilla and a few bonito at best.

I suppose the good side is that the sun was out and the majority of folks who do come down this time of year are really just looking for a day to get out and most of our clientele this time of year are from cold and wet places.  I always tell folks it’s off-season for fishing.

On the other hand, on the few windows of time when wind and currents are not a factor, I’m surprised at the quality of fish out there, especially for this time of year.  There’s some nicer grade of tuna; there’s chunky yellowtail; some free-swimming dorado and it seems like the big pargo liso (mullet snapper) are starting to spawn and school-up in the shallows.

RAMBLING DOWN THE ROAD!

Denver…Sacramento…Seattle…Portland…Salt Lake City…Bakersfield…Boise…Long Beach and now…time to climb in the van once again!

Long Beach is always a party with about 100 thousand of your closest fishing friends!

We’ve been on the road now since the middle of December and just finished up the incredible Fred Hall Fishing & Boating Show at the Long Beach Convention Center that just broke all kinds of attendance records.  Jilly and I talked for 5 days straight without a let-up and it was off-the-hook!  Thank you, Southern California and all our friends and Tailhunter Tribe for all the grins and high-fives!

OK! But, how does he really feel? Nothing wrong with tacos!

We really could use a week to recover!  However, it’s onward down the road to our 10th show of the season.  So, starting Thursday and going through Sunday, we’ll be at the SOUTH TOWNE EXPO CENTER for the INTERNATIONAL SPORTSMAN’S EXPO just outside of Salt Lake City!  Always a great show and tons of things to see and do! Come down to see Jill and I and let’s chat about fishing in La Paz this year!

Lastly, just a quick shout out to everyone for all the fantastic birthday wishes this past week.  It just could not have been any better!  I got hundreds of cards, e-mails, texts and visits from so many of you!  You’re the best!  Also, to everyone who showed up to share some beer, pickled eggs, polish sausage sandwiches and way to many salty pretzels at Joe Jost’s Bar in Long Beach, you rock and I’m grateful and blessed and an even bigger thank you and love to my lovely partner-in-crime who makes it all happen and everyday like my birthday, Jilly!

MEXICAN MINUTE LA PAZ VIDEO FISHING REPORT

 

WINDS AND CURRENTS DON’T DO US ANY FAVORS…AGAIN

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay/ Suenos Bay/ Mag Bay Fishing Report for Week of Feb. 24-March 4, 2018

 

Sam Naramore came to visit us from snowy Boise, Idaho and was out with Captain Armando when he got this nice yellowtail and lost another. He also got some good action on bonito over 3 days fishing but wind hampered efforts.

Catherine (“Kitty”) Beaton and her friend Kat Griffith…Kitty and Kat…are visiting artists visiting La Paz and gave fishing a try one day and got a nice little yellowtail and some bonito plus struck a pose with beers on their heads! Fun ladies!

For the third week in a row, fishing took a hit from winter winds and strong currents.  There were a few windows of fishing, but overall, it was picky at best.  Most of the time, it was simply frustrating.  This is the reason it’s called “off-season.”  The weather is a major factor.  It affects getting bait.  It affect being able to fish.  It affects where and how we fish.  Honestly, some days, it was barely worth going out which is why we warn out anglers how it can be this time of year.

We did get a few yellowtail.  There were a few jags of bonito.  Some cabrilla and snapper rounded things out, but that was kind of it. On the upside, the good thing is that we don’t have that many folks fishing this time of year.

Our action on the Pacific side was a bit better.  Winds didn’t affect thing at all in the protected waters.  Fishing from Lopez Mateos, there was some excellent inshore action for snook, dog-tooth snapper, corvina and pargo using live shrimp.  Also, we had some good days of whale watching with numerous whales spotted and approached.

Our yearly whale-watching tours over to Lopez Mateos in Bahia Magdalena are still rolling super!  It appears the whales are sticking around a bit longer than normal.  Usually by this time of year, the whales are starting to move out, but we’re still seeing numerous whales in the calm bay waters.  Check out the photos and video below!  It’s a great experience.  We’re told the whales should be around for a few more  weeks!

Jill and I had great weeks!  Jilly spent the week at the Idaho Sportsmans Show in Boise, Idaho.  I was at the Kern Co. Fairgrounds at the Fred Hall Central Valley Outdoor Show in Bakersfield CA.   Great to see so many of you and we’re looking forward to everyone who’s coming to visit us in La Paz in 2018.

Now, we move onto the biggest and oldest show on the West Coast! It’s the massive Fred Hall Fishing and Boating Show in Long Beach CA at the Long Beach Convention Center.  The show runs Wednesday to Sunday and it’s a monster!  Tons of stuff for fishermen, hunters, families, and the outdoors.  Not to be missed!  Hope to see you there. We’ve moved our booth too. After 20 something years, we’re now one row over in a corner booth.  More space to say hi to you!

JONATHAN’s BIRTHDAY BEER

 Tuesday is Jonathan’s birthday.  If you’re in the area about 5 p.m., we’ll be hanging out at famous legendary Joe Jost’s in Long Beach for beer, picked eggs, liverwurst (yes, they serve that!), egg salad sandwiches and hot dogs (that’s all they serve!).  Come join us!

It’s located at 2803 East Anaheim Street, Long Beach CA.

Not sure how long we’ll stay since alot of us have to be at the Long Beach Convention Center the next day for the Fred Hall Show, but at least long enough to have a few cold ones.  TAKE UBER!

MEXICAN MINUTE LA PAZ VIDEO FISHING REPORT for WEEK of FEB. 17-24, 2018

THE BIG PICTURE FISHING REPORT

To be honest, not much to show you this week. Winds and strong current made it tough…as often happens during the off-season in winter and we even had to cancel trips later in the week. We only got some smaller reef fish like these that included pargo, snapper and cabrilla. Good eating, but not our best..but not much to do about the weather. It is what it is.

Prime time for our whale-watching tours right now, but weather this week forced cancelations and postponements. When there’s storms in the U.S., it usually affects us as well down in Baja. This coming week looks much better!

NOT MUCH TO TELL YOU WHEN WINDS and CURRENT CURTAIL ACTION

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay/ Suenos Bay Fishing Report for Week of Feb. 17-24 2018

Not much to tell you this week.  Early in the week we had a few people, but the fishing was hampered by strong winds and currents so we had to stay close which resulted in a few small reefish like pargo and cabrilla.  

As the week went on, winds got stronger.  We didn’t have many reservations, but the few we had postponed trips until the winds died down. Fortunately, they were in town for a few days and had flexible schedules.  We even had to cancel some of our whale watching trips to Bahia Magdalena because of winds and some spats of rain.

It’s like this in winter.  If there’s storms in the U.S. there’s usually an effect in Baja and the western U.S. got a lot of cold, wind, rain and snow this past week.   The coming week should be better!

MEXICAN MINUTE FISHING REPORT for WEEK of FEB. 11-18, 2018

THE BIG PICTURE FISHING REPORT

Captain Adolfo of our Tailhunter Fleet at Las Arenas took Dr. Guy Nazareno from Fremont CA out and plugged the box with some nice fat yellowfin tuna. This was Guy’s first visit to fish with us in La Paz.

Our good amiga, Verda Boyd, with her favorite Captain Jorge comes to see us once or twice a year and she started her week off with some sturdy yellowfin and a legit dorado from Muertos Bay.

Two more yellowfin tuna for Alex Dominguez using live bait at the south end of Cerralvo Island.

TUNA AGAIN SET THE SURPRISING BAR

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay/ Suenos Bay Fishing Report for Week of Feb. 11-18, 2018

Again, we had some atypical fishing for winter in La Paz.  As usual, there were some days when the winds were blustering and the currents were strong so we ended up fishing around the rocks and reefs of Bahia de los Muertos to keep in the protected waters.  Fishing produced jack crevalle, sierra, bonito, snapper, cabrilla and cargo.  Or, towards the end of the week when winds pretty much completely hindered any effective fishing.

However, once again, we were surprised by the showing of yellowfin tuna which we don’t usually see so early in the year, especially during the winter months.  Using live sardines or frozen squid, fish were running healthy 15-40 pounds. Fishing was best when the winds and current were diminished which allowed us to get to the live bait spots and then make the short run to the south end of Cerralvo Island.

Earlier in the week when waters were calmer, we were getting 1-6 tuna per panga.  Later in the week as waters got a little more choppy, fewer but larger fish moved in with schools of bonito limiting the tuna bite although the few fish we got were generally larger than the earlier fish.   The same area also produced a few dorado as well.

MAGDALENA BAY EXPLORATORY TRIP ROCKS!

The variety of fish was outstanding on the light tackle including pargo mulatto, dog tooth snapper, red snapaper, snook, corbina, black snapper and snook.

Happy guy, Jorge Romero, with a nice white corvina he said tasted great with salsa vera cruz back in La Paz!

Snook and corbina on the deck were some of the surprising catches!

 

For the first time, we sent out some exploratory trips to check out the inshore fishing at Bahia Magdalena about 3 hours from La Paz in the hundreds of square miles of calm shallow lagoon waters.  We are ecstatic about what we encountered using live bait and light tackle. Fishing in the brush and mangroves of the brackish water, they encountered numerous species including snook, dog-tooth snapper, yellow snapper, big white corvina, black snapper, cabrilla and many others!  We plan to send out a few more exploratory trips and may start running panga fishing there before the season is over.

ADIOS LA PAZ CARNAVALE 2018!

For almost a week, La Paz rocked with the sounds of the biggest street fair of the year as the entire waterfront Malecon of the city held it’s traditional Carnavale with rides, parades, food, incredible music and all kinds of crazy fun.  Thanks to everyone who filled our Tailhunter Restaurant which is right on the waterfront to spend their Carnavale hours watching all the parades!  Viva La Paz!

MEXICAN MINUTE LA PAZ VIDEO FISHING REPORT for WEEK of Feb. 4-11, 2018

WINTER TUNA BITE?  SERIOUSLY?

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay/ Suenos Bay Fishing Report for Week of Feb. 4-11, 2018

Our fishing report this week is almost identical to last week.  Not many folks fishing this time of year. Typical windy days and then great sunny days and the key is really figuring out which days will be windy or not.  On the days it’s windy there’s two choices.  Either stay ashore and figure a different day to fish or go out and fish inshore where we’re catching the usual structure fish like pargo, cabrilla or snapper.  Just a little outside, bonito, sierra and jack crevalle add to the catch. Maybe the occasional dorado.

However, on the calmer days when we can move off just a bit further, especially over to Cerralvo Island, there’s yellowtail, big dog tooth snapper and the SURPRISE!!!! ….some decent 15-30 pound yellowfin tuna.   Slow trolling deep running Rapalas, live sardines and chunked frozen squid have been working best.

Normally, we don’t see these tuna out here this time of year.  The tuna are usually a spring / fall fish for us, but this is a real nice bonus.  There’s a spot of tuna off the south end of Cerralvo Island holding the fish but it’s all dependent on being able to make that quick run over if the wind and waves allow.  Fortunately, this past week there were some good days to make the run because if it’s blowing, it’s also hard to get the bait!

This would be nice if it holds out.  I’m not sure if these are left-over fish from last season or we’re onto the beginning of a super new season!  Will keep you posted for sure!  Pretty cool stuff!

Wow…what killer fun shows!  Thank you everyone who came to visit!  When we’re alone it sometimes makes it hard to chat as much as we’d like to, but we sure appreciated seeing you and big thanks also to all of you who booked trips with us this year!  We’re looking forward to the visit.  We’ll have some fun!

MEXICAN MINUTE LA PAZ VIDEO FISHING REPORT for WEEK of Jan. 28-Feb. 4, 2018

THE BIG PICTURE FULL FISHING REPORT for WEEK of Jan. 28-Feb. 4, 2018

Aaron Garcia got out on one of the flatter days over to the south end of Cerralvo Island and found a nice spot of yellowfin tuna willing to eat live and dead sardines.

Captain Pancho was out with Dr. Santiago Morales and found quite a mix including some chunky tuna, a dorado and a cabrilla!

Nice 15-25 pound rack of yellowfin that showed up at the sound end of Cerralvo Island mid-week. Very unusual to be seeing these tuna this early in the year, perhaps holdover fish from last season’s great tuna bite.

TUNA IN FEBRUARY?

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay/ Suenos Bay Fishing Report for Week of Jan. 28-Feb. 4, 2018

 

It was a week of contrasts.  But it’s often like that for wintertime fishing.

Some days cloudy (and even a bit of rain this week).  Other days were somewhat sunny.  There were some expected windy days when we had to fish close inshore.  When the winds weren’t blowing, we got out a bit further and our area of fishing was expanded.  Not many folks fishing.

On those days inshore, we got the usual.  Not bad fishing.  There were cabrilla, snapper, jack crevalle, bonito and sierra as well as some pargo.  Bonus fish, some dorado as well schooling around the shallow waters.

On the few days we got over to the island there was a spot of decent yellowfin tuna that were eating sardines that we were also able to find over by the island.  That spot was just on the high spot right off the rocks.  It’s pretty unusual to get tuna this time of year, but these 15-25 pound fish were ready to chew.  Simply flylining the sardines without weight and letting them sink and drift got the fish to bite.

 We are back on the road again and after spectacular shows at Denver, Sacramento and the Washington State Fairgrounds near Seattle, we’re back on the road and…SPLITTING UP!

Jill will be flying to Salt Lake City for the Great Western Hunt and Conservation Show at the Salt Palace  (Thursday to Sunday)
