MEXICAN MINUTE LA PAZ VIDEO FISHING REPORT for WEEK of Jan. 28-Feb. 4, 2018
THE BIG PICTURE FULL FISHING REPORT for WEEK of Jan. 28-Feb. 4, 2018
Aaron Garcia got out on one of the flatter days over to the south end of Cerralvo Island and found a nice spot of yellowfin tuna willing to eat live and dead sardines.
Captain Pancho was out with Dr. Santiago Morales and found quite a mix including some chunky tuna, a dorado and a cabrilla!
Nice 15-25 pound rack of yellowfin that showed up at the sound end of Cerralvo Island mid-week. Very unusual to be seeing these tuna this early in the year, perhaps holdover fish from last season’s great tuna bite.
MIke Distel and son Dave Distel with a couple of great eating cabrilla caught over the rocks.
Jilly will be in Salt Lake City UT this week at the Great Western Hunt and Conservation Expo at the Salt Palace. Jonathan will man the other booth in Portland Oregon at the Pacific NW Sportsmans Show! Scroll down for more details! Come say hi!
TUNA IN FEBRUARY?
La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay/ Suenos Bay Fishing Report for Week of Jan. 28-Feb. 4, 2018
It was a week of contrasts. But it’s often like that for wintertime fishing.
Some days cloudy (and even a bit of rain this week). Other days were somewhat sunny. There were some expected windy days when we had to fish close inshore. When the winds weren’t blowing, we got out a bit further and our area of fishing was expanded. Not many folks fishing.
On those days inshore, we got the usual. Not bad fishing. There were cabrilla, snapper, jack crevalle, bonito and sierra as well as some pargo. Bonus fish, some dorado as well schooling around the shallow waters.
On the few days we got over to the island there was a spot of decent yellowfin tuna that were eating sardines that we were also able to find over by the island. That spot was just on the high spot right off the rocks. It’s pretty unusual to get tuna this time of year, but these 15-25 pound fish were ready to chew. Simply flylining the sardines without weight and letting them sink and drift got the fish to bite.
HELLO PORTLAND…AND SALT LAKE CITY!
In the van with Jilly and Catlyn hanging out and no the road! Only 2 more months and 8 more shows to go! We love it!
Goofing with Jilly in the booth!
We are back on the road again and after spectacular shows at Denver, Sacramento and the Washington State Fairgrounds near Seattle, we’re back on the road and…SPLITTING UP!
Jill will be flying to Salt Lake City for the Great Western Hunt and Conservation Show at the Salt Palace (Thursday to Sunday)

I have a hard time looking at the pics you guys continue to post . I have fished the Muertos Bay Area for years . O know a lot of your guides most by face and some buy name . I fished the Bay for 4 days Jan 24 th to Han 28 th . Only seeing one maybe two tail hunter guided trips . The 24 th being the nicest day , and sardines for bait . After that the winds picked up and fishing a bit more difficult . Lack of bait , lures not working . I know the guides need to work and u r the guy that gets them the work . I just find it hard to see what you post . And knowing it’s not all true . Dean a Canadian Amego !! Sent from my iPhone
Dean: Wow…in 23 years working here, I think this is the first time someone calls me out as a liar. So, you think I make this stuff up? You think I pull photos out’ve thin air? I work my butt off to be accurate and have a 30 year reputation in the business as such even to my own detriment.
Had you called me to ask about booking fishing I would tell you, as I tell everyone that during November to April is OFF-SEASON. It can be rough, windy, choppy, water-off-color and some days we cannot even go out. I’m painfully honest about that. I probably turn down hundreds of dollars a week in trips that we COULD book…that my captains are screaming for trips because they need to feed their families…but I am always up front about it and most folks seem very grateful.
Still, there are folks who make their vacation plans before consulting me or they are already in town and still say they want to go out. In that case, we try to find them the days that are less windy of rough if they have some flexbility with their schedules. They know that they take their chances. The days you mention, I had one panga each day with Victor. Same two guys from Orange County. You can look at my fishing report from two weeks ago. Dave and Mike Distel. Caught one tuna the first day. Bunch of bonito and some carbrilla day 2 and 3. It was indeed windy and they knew it, but still said they had a blast and it was the only time father and son could get a vacation together. I’d be happy to give you their e-mails and you can ask them yourself if had tried to dissuade them from fishing.
From April to October, I bring 1000-1500 clients to fish for the last 23 years. I’m #1 on Trip Advisor and you’re welcome to read over 500 comments from my folks. I work very hard at this 7 days a week, Dean. But, from November to April…only a handful of fishermen because it’s not a good time to fish. If you read my reports CAREFULLY instead of maybe just looking at photo, you’ll see that I’m very meticulous in talking about the winds and weather. Same in my videos. All I’m saying is read carefully before you tee off on me like that. Don’t base your judgment on me because of your bad fishing days. If you read my report, you’d have noted that I said that same thing about Mike and Dave Distels fishing. But, they KNEW going in it was going to be difficult. I had not other trips so if you know all the captains, they weren’t working for me those dates. Many have their own clients in the off-season because they need to work and feed their families because I surely do not have much work for them.
I’ve been doing my weekly report every single week now for almost 25 years. I’ve only missed a handful of times. But, if you doubt me, go to the fishing report page and I have every single fishing report archived back to 2006. You can check my photos…my video…my reports. You will also see where I tell people it’s not good. It does me no good to lie. I could sure use some income in the off-season. MY captains can use work. But I turn down hundreds of dollars a week in trips telling people it might not be good. Alot of outfitters won’t do that.
Anyway, I’ve solved the issue and have removed you from the weekly list so you don’t have to agonize over my “dishonesty.”

If you read my last report, I even talk extensively about difficult days of fishing. https://fishreport.jonathanroldan.com/
