THE BIG PICTURE and the REST of the STORY…
As you can tell, it’s not the best weather for fishing looking at the sky and also how the guys are bundled up, but a nice variety of fish on one of the day when the wind didn’t blow so hard. In addition the yellowtail, there’s a couple of nice cabrilla, a sierra, a snapper and a bonito.
It’s a bit awkward when you’re the captain and guide and YOU catch fish, but the local client can’t hook any! Captain Pancho was just off the rocks at Bahia Muertos when he hooked this while jigging in the rough water. Again, you can tell it’s not the greatest weather.
Gary and Miles Wagner at Gary’s place at Rancho Costa in Bahia Muertos got out on one of the better days and got some tasty pompano and a tuna which are unusual to hook this time of year.
This is that time of the year from November to April when the fishing reports and not only boring to read, but also kinda boring to write! But, sometimes, maybe it’s just as important to tell you what is NOT happening. Especially, if you’re planning to visit on a vacation.
It was another especially cold and windy week with some gusts up to about 25 mph at times with cloudy skies and cold temps that kept even alot of locals inside and had us lighting our sidewalk heaters at our Tailhunter Restaurant on the La Paz waterfront.
There were a few little gaps here and there and it’s mostly locals fishing who have the ability to get out for a few hours of fishing then run quickly back in when it gets blustery or can check the weather forecasts and pick specific days to get on the water.
Reports from them as well as friends who are commercial fishermen (who HAVE to go out to make al living) indicate that there’s a little jag of tuna at the south end of Cerralvo Island if you can make that bumpy ride across the channel.
There are also a few stray dorado here and there. However, most of the catch has been yellowtail, some smaller amberjack, sierra, bonito, snapper and cabrilla…all inshore fish.
Live and dead bait as well as jigs have worked best.
WESTERN HUNT & CONSERVATION EXPO
This coming week, the Tailhunter Show Tour takes us to Salt Lake City for the massive Western Hunt & Conservation Expo. Always a giant show with almost 1000 exhibitors, vendors, outfitters, guide services and more covering the floor of the Salt Palace Convention Center in downtown Salt Lake City.
We’re looking forward to seeing so many of our Tailhunter Tribe members who always come to visit and book their trips for 2023. Jill and I will be in the booth every day from Thursday to Sunday, Feb. 2-5. We hope to see you there.
