Touch all the bases! Talk about “grand slamming” Rafi Achmetov from Virginia and Arlan Schmitz (New Mexico), flank Captain Jorge with three nice catches! They had barely left the beach at Muertos when the big wahoo hit. They got that in the boat and got hit by the dorado then topped it off with a roosterfish (not able to release). Great example of some of the variety right now.

Whoa! That’s a fat wahoo for Virgil Redwine and Bob Donahue! The duo had some kind of week with us! They used conventional tackle for the wahoo but with the flyrod, they got numerous dorado, jack crevalle, roosterfish and other species!

After a week of fishing in Cabo, Randy Matz and Barbara Morris from Coalinga CA came north to do a bit of panga fishing with us. They show off some of their catch…a trophy-sized pompano and a dorado.

Catch of the week for Marty Koschnitzke! He and his girlfriend, Belle, got a couple handfuls of dorado with Captain Armando, then he proposed to Belle on the beach back in La Paz and she said, “Yes!” Congratulations to them both!

Surprising roosterfish bite for so late in the year! Virgil Redwine caught and released over a dozen roosters many on the flyrod. The roosterfish have been very good to us the last few weeks!

They were able to squeeze in one day of fishing and Joe Cisneros and his bud, Carlos Rojas from San Diego turned in a nice day…they got this fat wahoo and lost two others at the boat!

Mike Carter who lives in Pescadero just south of La Paz put the hurt on some dorado plus this nice pair of tasty pompano. These are fish we normally don’t see until the springtime.

Another cold-water fish that showed up lately indicative of the changing season…sierra! Captain Pancho poses with Brian Mee from eastern Washington and this speedy sierra!

A rare catch! It’s a mutant cabrilla (seabass) that we call a “Baja Grouper” or “Golden Grouper” that we catch now and then. Captain Archangel seems a bit distressed, but he’s one of our best at catching reef species!

Virgil Redwine and Bob Donahue had a great week….wahoo…dorado…sierra…roosterfish…jack crevalle…roosterfish…They released most of their fish too!

SOLID FISHING – CRAZY WAHOO – VARIETY!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Nov. 9-16, 2014

Perfect conditions…willing fish…lots of variety…light traffic…a nice action week of fishing!

Our anglers this past week probably could not have asked for better conditions that we often get at this time of the year. There can be days as we transition from warmer to colder conditions where the winds blow strong and cool and it gets a bit choppy. We’ll see more of those kinds of days as we get closer to December, but this past week wasn’t one of them as the season winds down.

This time of year, we get fewer fishermen and more folks simply escaping for a few days in the sunshine from colder areas or here for the holidays. So, if this is truly the end of our fishing “rush” for the season, it’s closing with a bang!

There were incredible varieties this week. Bottom fish. Topwater fish. Bluewater game fish. Warm water fish. Cold water fish. Trophy fish. They pretty much all game to the party in one way, shape or form. Some days were better than others. Some boats did better than others. But the whole week…taken in totality… provided some excellent action, especially if the anglers fished more than one day. Our conventional anglers did great. Our light tackle folks did great. Some of our BEST fishing was had by our flyfishermen…after a season that was really tough on flyfishing!

I’m not sure where to start.

For one thing, I’m pretty convinced now that our La Paz side fishing is headed into winter condtions. Fishing for La Paz has been pretty inconsistent as waters cool down. There’s still some dorado, but it’s erratic. For that reason, most of our fishermen are fishing with our Tailhunter Las Arenas fleet. Waters seem to be holding warmer and, even on the breezy days, fishing is closer to shower and there’s no arguing with the variety. Everyone is getting fish every day. I would say the anglers who go for the “home run” fish and chase the big trophy fish are most likely to be at the whims of nature, the fish and luck, while the anglers who “go with the flow” and chase whatever is biting have had the better success.

The majority of the fish were dorado. Nothing huge, but fun 10-20 pounders were common. Great for the first-timers, light tackle and the flyfishers. We also had bonito, jack crevalle and schools of sierra and incredibly surprising numbers of rooster fish show up that all meant great bent rod action plus a few sailfish hooked and lost. We also got a few nice wahoo off that high spot at the south end of Cerralvo Island. Incredibly, some of our wahoo were being caught right against the rocks just outside of Bahia de Los Muertos just a few minutes off the beach.

On the bottom and off the reefs and rocks, we saw amberjack for the first time. None of the huge ones, but 10-20 pound amberjack are a fun size and great eating at that size. Plus dog-tooth cubera snapper (pargo), barred pargo, yellow snapper and cabrilla (Mexican sea bass) in varying sizes up to the larger 15 pound pargo.

It was the kind of week that you almost never knew what you were going to catch. It really feels like we’re right on the brink of things changing over. I don’t know how much longer this kind of fishing will continue. It could change by the time you’re reading this. We’re right on the brink. It just has that “feel” as I watch the waters, the winds and the air temperatures every day. However, with this “El Nino” season, there’s just no telling and I’ve been wrong all season! So, until things change, we’ll continue to ride the wave and enjoy the bite!

The ladies and the youngsters had a GREAT week! Like young Katylyn Luker from Santa Maria CA! Right out of the chute, her first fish on her first day is a big wahoo! Captain Moncho signals touchdown!

Another one of our amigas who had a banner week, Lisa Hicks from Seattle WA, put the hurt on this chunky wahoo at the south end of Cerralvo Island using a Rapala.

Vic Patton has been one of our regular amigos for many seasons! He and Captain Victor show off a real trophy…a dog-tooth snapper! Also called a Cubera Snapper, these are tough tough fish and getting the out’ve the rocks is an accomplisment!

Two more of our first-timers…Mike and Robbi Caray came down from their farm outside of Portland OR to enjoy some sunshine and had an incredible day on some big dorado like this 40 pound class beast! Mike fought this fish for over 45 minutes!

Brothers Andy and Raphael Montejano had one of THOSE kinds of days…Andy nails this big rooster and Rafi put the hurt on a wahoo. It was their first time fishing and they also got dorado and snapper on an incredible day.

Our new amigo from Idaho, Tom Mullican, was here for almost two weeks of fishing. He was going to fish a few days then take some days off then fish a few more days. After two days of dorado fishing he decided he was having too much fun and booked fishing EVERY SINGLE DAY!

One of the nice surprises of the week was the appearance of the big roosters again. Captain Victor holds up a fish caught by John Hardardt. The fish was released. They are near the rocks just south of Bahia de Los Muertos.

Captain Boli help our long-time friend, John Ehlers from Denver CO, who just got done working at a lodge in Alaska and brought his family down to La Paz. John had a great week on dorado and other species with Captain Boli.

Another one of the nice wahoo we picked up this week, Rod and Nick get an assist from Captan Jorge with their “hoo while on the beach at Bahia de Los Muertos.

Brian Mee from Washington, shows another example of one of the crazy variety we had this week. Using light tackle, Brian brought back a catch of cabrilla and tasty sierra…usually not seen until our waters cool down.

Kris Honkola from San Rafael CA and his amigo, Marcus Dyster all the way from Finland , took this quick photo of one of their sailfish they caught north of La Paz. The sails were thicker than we’re normally used to!

Hard to find someone more fun or enthusiastic than our Seattle buddy, Dan Hicks. And he knows how to fish too and loves the light tackle. He had a great week on the dorado!

CRAZY WEEK…NOT ALOT OF QUANTITY…BUT SOME GREAT QUALITY!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Oct. 25-Nov. 2, 2014

It was a different kind of week. It was good for good fish but not good for ALOT of fish! Let me explain…

You’ve heard of “Quality over Quantity.” Well, it was THAT kind of week. There were NOT alot of fish by our standards although there were some nice flurries of dorado, bonito, jack crevalle, sierra and other fish that kept rods bent.

But, those fish could be there one day and gone the next. Or they could be in one spot and move the next day or be there for 30 minutes of madness then the ocean would be calm again and not a fish in sight. That’s just the way it is right now. The seasons are changing. Water and air temperatures are cooling and we’re transitioning to the winter season which is approaching. Shadows are different. Current are different. The wind is starting to blow stronger from the north. It can be a little choppier. We’re going to get some days that the winds might even be too strong to fish comfortably.

The upside to all of this is that there are a tremendous number of species!

Just check out the photos!!!! We probably had as many as a dozen different species of fish…inshore…offshore…blue water…rock fish…We never knew what our folks were going to come back with.

And that’s what made this week really different.

We didn’t have LOTS of fish. We had a lot of DIFFERENT FISH. AND we had some real QUALITY FISH!

Like check out the wahoo this week! This had to be one of the best wahoo weeks of the season. We had one day when almost every one of our pangas hooked at least one wahoo around Cerralvo Island. And these were nice healthy 30-50 pound fish.

Also, for the first time in many months, we got 30-60 pound rooster fish and some huge dorado as well up to about 45 pounds and many others that were lost!

The dilemma in this kind of fishing is that you don’t get many chances. If the fish aren’t milling about, you might get one or two big bites…FOR THE ENTIRE DAY! It might be a big wahoo. It might be a big dorado or rooster fish. For whatever reason, if the fish gets off or you miss the bite or you have your beer in your hand…that’s it! It’s a missed opportunity and the rest of the day could be nothing more than a few bonito.

Or, conversely, there’s two anglers in a panga and one gets a trophy of a lifetime and the other guys twiddles his thumbs the rest of the day. So you get one really happy fella and one saying, “Fishing was really slow.”

One thing however…our ladies, kids and first-timers sure had it going on! Many of them got the big wahoo or big dorado and many of our veteran Tailhunter anglers were the “other guy” in the boat relegated to taking photos! But, it was great to see so many of the rookies kicking butt! Still…I won’t kid you. We did have some disappointed folks who ran into some tough fishing…which then often changed around the next day. Or not…

I think we’re gonna see more of these variable conditions in the next coming weeks as we transition into winter. Overall, however, you can’t ask for prettier conditions just to be here in La Paz. Days are not humid. Just nice sunshine and 85-90 degree air temps. It looks like a postcard. Most days are flat calm. The water is still in the 80’s. Night temps are comfortably in the 70’s.

One head’s up…looks like we do have a bit of rain coming this week with a late-season storm that could hit us mid-week and get us wet and stick us with some strong winds. Then, it moves off quickly.

FINALLY! Look what popped up! After seeing “signs” of tuna ever since the hurricane, we finally got a few and hopefully, these are the vanguard for a building bite! Standing on the beach at Muertos, Louie Sanchez from Denver and Don Goss from Los Angeles, jumped numerous hurdles to get to La Paz even after the hurricane! First tuna of the season!

Dorado like the one here with Mike Jennings have been rolling through in solid numbers, especially west of Cerralvo Island where easy limits have not been unusual!

The billfish have been restless since the storm and we had several days this past week where almost every one of our pangas hooked at least one sailfish. Most were released.

Geri Cammack with the kind of dorado that have been producing north of La Paz this past week. Except for this past weekend, weather has been some of the best of the season!

GETTING BACK ON TRACK!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Sept. 28-Oct. 5, 2014

For the last three weeks since Hurricane Odile, we’ve honestly had some of the best weather and condtions of the year! Blue skies…calm warm waters…very little wind. Just enough breeze to keep it comfortable.

But, as I’m writing this, we’re looking at Tropical Storm Simon that promises to drop a little rain on us for the next 4 days (Saturday to Monday) Doesn’t look like too much. Just enough to get us wet and hit us with some afternoon thunder and lightning. However, given how much we’ve already gotten hit in this El Nino year, I was kinda hoping that “enough-was-enough.”

Here in La Paz, and surely in many other places in southern Baja, especially the closer you get to Cabo, there’s alot of folks who lost their homes or they were heavily damaged. So, even a “little rain” only adds more misery to a situation that was under recovery.

By any stretch of the imagination, the recovery has been remarkable. The government and local authorities both public and private pulled out all the stops to get folks back on the grid as soon as possible. Much of the work has been done in record time although there are some folks only now getting back with power and water. But this is far ahead of predictions.

Most notably, the Cabo Airport which had been forecast as taking months to re-open, is now open as of Oct. 3rd with flights slowly starting to trickle in. Hotels and other tourist attractions are also making great strides.

As for the fishing, the great weather and conditions predicated some very good fishing these last few weeks. You could not have asked for better air and water! The only problem was that there weren’t many fishermen in town as there had been scores of cancelations, especially since there were no flights.

However, for those who were able to get on the water, dorado were most cooperative. These fish had not seen any traffic or pressure now for 3 weeks! They are hungry! Several days limits were easy and the anglers were catching and releasing fish as fast as they could go! On two days, our guys came back happily by noon with full fish boxes and “more than enough action for the day!”

Most of the fish were 10-15 pounds, but others in the 20-25 pound class were also found. Additionally, marlin and sailfish hooks-ups were also recorded. There’s an abundance of bonito out there so no shortage of action on light tackle. And, we also hooked a few wahoo around Cerralvo Island.

Maybe the most exciting ripple of news…Commercial guys got a few tuna that hit and moved off! Then, right at the end of the week, we hit a few football tuna ourselves. The biggest problem was getting through the voracious schools of bonito, but there are tuna signs everywhere. Several private boats as well as commercial guys report tuna in the 100 pound class coming through the areas and some of our diver friends reported diving and having schools of tuna flash through! This could be good! Standing by!

Two weeks ago, we were ankle deep and surveying the damage the morning after Odile struck La Paz. Fallen trees…broekn windows…shattered glass everywhere. It had been a long and sleepless night. The start of many to follow. The hotel has made a remarkable recovery!

LA PAZ…AIRLINES…FISHING BACK ON TRACK!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Sept. 21-28, 2014

Two weeks ago, we were standing in the water surveying the rubble and destruction for the biggest hurricane ever to hit Baja. Two weeks later…WE’RE ON THE COMEBACK! We’re digging out with remarkable speed!

Frankly, there hasn’t been alot of fishing going on since the hurricane. All the tourists have pretty much been evacuated or, there’s no way to fly in, or hotels have been damaged or without services so trips have been canceled. Local residents or expats aren’t fishing either as everyone struggles to get back on keel with larger things to worry about like food, water, gas and their homes and jobs.

However, we’ve had a few boats out here and there. Weather has still been erratic. Nothing bad, but there have been some lingering intermittent rain cells that have moved through the area that has also kept us off the water or winds strong enough where it was better just not to put out any boats.

As might be expected, the further we get away from the hurricane, the better the water conditions. Given that we just had the biggest hurricane in Baja history, it’s not surprising that the waters were very overturned dirty and green. Lots of debris in the water too.

The first few days, there were a few small dorado around. Some sierra and bonito as well.

Within a few days, we were seeing more dorado, but they seemed interested, but wary. Very hesitant to take a bait or lure.

By the end of this week, the fish were back on the chew. We had limits or near limits of dorado including some nice bulls in the 20-30 pound class as well as bonito, cabrilla, jack crevalle and a few small rooster fish.

For everyone who sent well wishes and support phone calls and e-mails, we much appreciated it. We’re digging out and like everyone else, trying to manage and pull back together. The storm has been pretty devastating. On many levels.

The La Paz Airport is back in operation. Tourists are gone, but the hotels are jammed full with more than 20,000 escapees from Cabo San Lucas.

and arrive in Los Angeles at 3:45 p.m.

All our pangas and captains are well. We pulled the pangas out’ve the water before the storm hit. The La Paz captains did better than our Las Arenas captains. At Las Arenas, many in the area are will without water, power, electricity or phones. Compound that with the tremendous loss of work with all the cancelations. The loss of work is a big hit for everyone.

Generally, here in La Paz, most areas have water and power and phones again. But many of the outlying areas are still lacking services two weeks after the storm. Of course, many of those who had the least, lost the most and have the hardest time making the comeback. In Cabo, they have approximately only 15% back on the grid, but the improvement is remarkable given initial estimates. As mentioned above, the airport will start getting flights this week. Many hotels are opening albeit on a limited basis. But again, the most underprivileged areas were hit the hardest and will take the longest to recover.

Many have asked for ways to help. Thanks for the generous hearts. If you’re coming down, ANYTHING is welcome. Many people lost everything. All ages. All areas. Clothes…school supplies…medical supplies…anything is appreciated and needed. If you’re not coming down, there are still ways to help:

Fish were hard to come by this past week, let alone BIG fish! But Shawn Parker knocked in this big bull dorado fishing with our Tailhunter Las Arenas fleet. Great colors!

Geri Cammack loves to fish and she always does well and I have so many photos of her laughing. But not on this one for some reason even tho’ she has a big dorado on the gaff! Geri is from Idaho and was visiting us with amigo, Al Sandstrom. (And they love eating their fish at Tailhunters Restaurant)

I love goof-ball candid shots. One of the best of the season is Captain Rogelio “Jolly Roger” Camacho who had the best week of any of our captains with stellar fishing 5 straight days with Leif Dover, our Atlanta GA amigo who visits us twice a year and shows off another big bull dorado.

One of the funnest guys, but always takes serious fishing photos, Walt Topping from the Santa Ynez Valley got into the report with a nice bull while fishing with Captain Boli and our Tailhunter La Paz fleet.

Johnny Gilbertson hung tough all week even during difficult fishing and kept at it hard! He did get this bull dorado just off Punta Arenas one of his days fishing with our Las Arenas fleet.

CONDITIONS GOOD BUT FISH PLAY HARD-TO-GET! TOUGH WEEK OF FISHING…

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Aug. 24-31, 2014

It was a strange and not very good week on alot of levels here. It was hard to put a finger on it. Dare I say, it might have been the toughest week of fishing of the year…and maybe in many years of being down here! It was just STINKY for lack of a better word.

Early in the week, it seemed we had threats of rainstorms just about every day. Some days it would actually rain pretty hard for awhile. Other days, we got nothing but clouds. But, it surely kept us on alert and trying to figure if it would be better for our fishing clients to fish out’ve La Paz or Las Arenas.

Mostly, just to be on the safe side, we kept folks fishing with our Tailhunter La Paz fleet. Dorado were more-or-less ready, willing and able and everyone was hooking fish. Not alot of big ones, but fun sized 10-20 pounders with occasional 25-30 pounders plus some billfish.

When we did fish Las Arenas, there were rooster fish and enough 10 pound dorado to at least keep it interesting.

Later in the week, it seemed that the weather pretty much cleared up. We were pretty excited after watching clouds for so many days!

The conditions looked awesome. Sunny skies…dark moon…blue water…decent bait (at least more than we had before)…good currents…warm water…but WAIT!

NO FISH!

I don’t know what happened, but the latter part of the week it was almost like a dead ocean. Not only did the dorado go lock-jaw on us, but so did the bonito and even needlefish got scarce!

Many of our ace captains who NEVER get shut out were coming back with nothing or only 1 or 2 fish. Maybe one day that can happen, but 2, 3, 4 days in a row?

I don’t think I’ve ever seen that many days go dead on us. At least not that many consecutive days.

Hopefully, but the time you’re reading this, things will have turned on again! Any day now! But we have to keep an eye out…MORE RAIN IS PREDICTED THIS WEEK! NO HURRICANES BUT THUNDERSHOWERS PREDICTED!

Thanks to all the amigos who fished this week and kept the smiles. You’re all champs! Even when the fish weren’t biting, you kept at it and were all great sports!

We all remember what it was like to get our first fish! Captain Alfredo with our Tailhunter La Paz fleet laughs and helps young Taryn Mitoma from Livermore CA with a nice dorado. She got away with her dad for a few quick days with us and had some very good catches! This was her first time and she’s definitely “hooked.”

Yup! Still got roosters around! Leif Dover from Atlanta GA makes several trips a year with us and always gets into big fish. Captain Rogelio looks on as Leif hoists a big rooster estimated at 60-70 pounds taken on live bait. The fish was released.

First billfish and it’s HUGE for Dr. Ed Mitoma who was fishing north of La Paz when he hooked into this unusually large striper estimated at 170-200 pounds by Captain Alfredo. Quite a few billfish were hooked this past week.

Two of the larger dorado taken this week among so many larger fish that were lost! That’s why they are bigger fish! But George Kasee and Leif Dover pose with two big bulls.

From Texas, Kevin Todd was fishing out’ve Las Arenas and got this unusual rainbow runner which is a cousin to yellowtail and makes great eating. Kevin couldn’t resist the photo with the cigar in the fish! Great shot!

THREATS OF RAIN KEEP ANGLERS FISHING IN LA PAZ WATERS WITH DORADO ON THE CHEW

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Aug. 17-24, 2014

We spent the week dodging the “possibility” of thundershowers all week and it looks like as you read this, we’ll be doing the same thing this week as well. According to predictions, we ran anywhere from 10-80% chance of thundershowers all week.

Now, that didn’t always mean it actually dropped water on our heads. Some of these never ever materialized other than some big fluffy clouds. Sometimes they were little squalls. On two days we had real gully washers and floods that lasted about an hour…then the sun came out. Sometimes it rained in one part of the city but a few blocks away, they got nothing.

It really didn’t affect our fishing much other than we kept most of our anglers fishing with our La Paz fleet instead of taking the chance of fishing with our Las Arenas fleet which has areas that are much more exposed to wind and waves. Especially the wind! A little rain is no biggie but big winds…you might as well forget it.

As a matter of fact, the only day when fishing was really off was a day that south winds kicked up into double digits.

For the most part, however, even if the rains came, it was generally in the later afternoon after all the fishing was done. That’s what it looks like again this week as several big storms hundreds of miles to the south of the Baja keep passing by out to sea, but spinning bits of rain cells our way.

LAS ARENAS

Because of the threat of thundershowers, we didn’t do much fishing in the area. It was just easier to keep fishing out’ve La Paz instead where the anglers had a better shot at good weather and more chances to get into fish, even if the weather late in the day soured.

However, when we did fish, the fishing was OK. We got into some TUNA! Yes…there were some big boy tuna that showed up. Several guys hooked into tuna estimated over 100 pounds, but all the fish broke off without ever seeing the fish. The area was around the south point of Cerralvo Island.

As for other species, the fun-sized 10-15 pound dorado were usually pretty easy to catch as well as big bonito. But the nice surprise were the number of hookups on sailfish and striped marlin. Most fish either got loose or were broken off.

We also got several nice rooster fish along the beach in the 20-40 pound class.

LA PAZ

As mentioned above, this was our most consistent area to fish. It was better to fish here than take a chance and end up in stormy weather further south. And, for the most part, it was a good decision.

Decent to very good dorado action took center stage. Lots of fish were lost so the counts weren’t as good as they could have been, but pangas still averaged some good counts of 5-20 pound fish with some larger in the 30 pound class. Every day was different. Every panga was different. Some areas produced wide-open bites one day, but the same spot the next produced very little. But if one spot wasn’t working, other spots took over.

Some nice rooster fish were caught and I was surprised at the size of some of the striped and blue marlin hooked and lost!

Another pretty solid week of dorado fishing with some really nice bulls taken including this sweet one that jumped a bait and bent Steve Dorsey’s rod fishing north of La Paz.

Captain Adolfo poses with our Colorado amigo, Frank Kunze who fished with us all week and had a good shot of dorado including this nice bull he got on the flyrod after just missing a rooster on the fly. He’s on the beach here at Bahia de los Muertos.

Ed Sakuda was on his first visit to fish Las Arenas and we think he’s “sold” on coming back with 3 days of dorado fishing. His sister Caryn and her husband Mark Aizawa from Pasadena CA get in the photo too!

Daniel Llerena from Buena Park had never fished salt water before and his dad hadn’t fished in salt water in more than a decade! The two of them came down and got in two quick days of fishing with some great results! Dan was fishing with Captain Joel when he put the hurt on this mahi.

Lee Carlson from the Denver Colorado area, spent 6 days on the water with us fishing with both our Tailhunter fleets and shows off one of his better bull dorado he got near Cerralvo Island.

Dan Hayler and his family all got together on one of our mega pangas for a day of fishing on the bay and had a nice day of action. The family is from Upland CA.

Gino and his son Daniel Llerena got in two quick days of fishing and made the most of it with some nice dorado as well as this striped marlin on light tackle. Cerralvo Island in the background.

Kelly Soo Hoo has fished with us before and did really well. This time she brought her son, Nick, for his first experience. Nice had a great time and got a variety of fish including these very tough jack crevalle!

From Bankor, Pennsylvania, Rich Normyl had a full hand of mahi. Check out the storm clouds coming up behind him at Bahia de los Muertos!

The whale sharks have returned to La Paz bay. Dan Hayler took this great photo of a “baby” whaleshark of only about 20 feet in the shallow bay water. They can grow to over 50 feet long and are true sharks, but are gentle and have no teeth and eat plankton.

This is what 15 minutes of rain produces on the La Paz waterfront right in front of our Tailhunter Restaurant Bar.

CRAZY WEATHER PACES FISH BITE

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Aug 10-17, 2014

Even with the week of “super moon” we still had a pretty decent week of fishing going on. Even with the tropical thundershowers late in the week that were almost like baby hurricanes, the fish still bit. But it was a bit of a challenge. But, like I said, the fish still bit.

The super moon was beautiful over Baja waters, especially here in La Paz over the bay making it much like a postcard with the huge bright moon shimmering over the bay and the palm trees.

The big problem was more of these afternoon thunderstorms that crashed into us late in the day. Fortunately, mostly after the fishing was done. But something to watch. Blue skies would darken quickly. Incredible lightning storms would follow then almost simultaneously thunderclaps that would sound like they were right overhead. During one 2 hour period during one storm, over 70 light night strikes were counted. During another storm, a bolt hit a palm tree on the malecon waterfront area igniting it which then caused it to fall on the palapa roof of a popular bar. The bar caught on fire then burned to the ground with huge flames 30 feet in the air.

Within minutes of the thunder and lightning the rains would cascade. Huge rolling waves of sheer water flooded streets and turned many into rivers and lower areas and arroyos into raging category 2 or 3 cauldrons that would’ve been the envy of whitewater kayakers…except they were all brown mud!

Cars suddenly found themselves up to the doors in water and many stalled. Neighborhoods found themselves turned into islands with people trapped in long rainy lines unable to leave the area and others in the opposite directions unable to return home. Off the La Paz cliffs, mini-Yosemite-like waterfalls tumbled 20, 30 40 feet to the roads along with rocks and boulders. In a one hour period during one storm, more than 3 inches of water descended on La Paz.

But, like I said as far as fishing, at least most of this was all taking place later in the day or evenings when the fishing was done.

LAS ARENAS

There was only one day during the week when we decided it wasn’t worth it to fish Las Arenas because of the stormy conditions. The rest of the time, for the most part, Las Arenas was pretty much as good as it has been all year. Relatively speaking.

We actually even had small sardines to use for bait and we had flyfishers hooking rooster fish, dorado, jack crevalle and bonito.

The dorado were 5-15 pounders with a few 20-30 pounders as well. If a boat found the right spot, limits were pretty easy. Roosterfish, while not as plentiful as earlier in the season were still around with most in the 10-30 pound class. Bonito, jack crevalle and even some barred pargo gave us some variety.

LA PAZ

Our La Paz fishery has been the most consistent all year. Some days are better than others, like anywhere else, but 9 out’ve 10 days, the fish are around and biting. Even on that 10th day, I’m not sure what the issue is, but anglers and my captains will tell me…”The fish were all around. We could see them or they would sniff the baits, but just wouldn’t take the baits!”

That was usually made up for on the other days of fishing when the dorado would be found in many areas from just inside the bait to the island and then around the point to El Rosario and Las Cruces.

Generally, the fish were 10-15 pounders although there were still persistent squirts in the 5 pound class around. But, larger 20-30 pounders were not uncommon. We also hooked some marlin and sailfish with most being released as well as some stray rooster fish that ran about 30 pounds near Espirito Santo Island.

That’s the way to do it! Our Captain Eddy Carballo helps 13-year-old Luke Fregoso from Agoura Hills with his biggest dorado. The 40-pound class bull was hooked north of La Paz and Luke fought it solo all the way to the boat. He also had a fish estimated at 50 pounds on for awhile.

Yes! There was some crazy weather this past week. Here’s a shot taken from the beach of the giant waterspout that popped up in the channel between Cerralvo Island, La Ventana and Las Arenas. No one has ever seen one this big out there.

Fortunately, this didn’t affect the fishing! But, it was pretty fascinating to watch!

Debbie White , our amiga from Tualatin OR, spends several weeks a year with husband, Don, with us in La Paz getting in some great fishing and always taking big fish like Debbie’s massively huge bull dorado here just outside of Bahia de los Muertos!

Wayne Moss has been my friend for many years and an exellent fisherman. He is a commercial pilot in the Maldives but took a few days to visit us and got a nice catch-and-release roosterfish just outside of Las Arenas.

Dick Carroll and his wife, Jeanette come to us from New Mexico and pose with a really nice Las Arenas bull dorado on the beach at Bahia de los Muertos.

Norm and Dorothy Fulco have known me since I ran JNJ Fishing Tackle in Rosemead CA some 20 years ago! The usually come to visit in July for Dorothy’s birthday and like fishing with Captain Pancho.

“Big Fish” Don White and an incredibly-colored blue bull dorado! Don is from Tualatin, Oregon near Portland.

Rob is looking pretty serious here but had to be one of the funniest guys this week. He took a day to give pargo fishing a shot and, while they lost several large models to the rocks, did manage this smaller one to bring back and add to the box of dorado!

Syd De Vries from Ripon CA and Captain Rogelio put another dorado in the boat. Yes, Rogelio is shorter than Syd! They were fishing north of La Paz near Espirito Santo Island.

Not as many whalesharks around these days, but there’s a few around. This “baby” 12 footer came up in the middle of the fishing boats to check out the action.

FULL MOON – TROPICAL RAINS – WATERSPOUTS AND DORADO!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of July 6-13, 2014

It was another one of crazy weeks. The fish were here but the weather was crazy funky. We had afternoon tropical storms that brought some heavy thunderstorms at times and flooding. The nutty thing was that it would rain for 10 minutes here…but not there…30 minutes in one area and 2 blocks away, it would be totally dry. This is normally the kind of weather we get in the fall, but El Nino conditions seem to have changed the game a bit. Thankfully, no hurricanes and no serious damage from the flooding, but out-of-the-blue mid-week, we actually had some pretty intense water-spouts show up between El Sargento, Las Arenas and Cerralvo Island. They looked like water tornados like the kind that would pick up your house and send you off to the Land of Oz! Incredible to watch.

Here’s what we saw this week:

LAS ARENAS

Our Tailhunter fleet at Las Arenas again found lots of action on the smaller school-sized dorado in the 5-8 pound range. They are like little squirrels all over the place. The larger models were harder to find, but the few we got were trophy 30-40 pound slugs. Dorado made up 80% of our Las Arenas catch.

Other species included some marlin and sailfish and roosters along the beach. Live bait continues to be problematic, but we’re still getting fish. No wahoo this week, but that’s because no one was really fishing for them. However, divers say the skinnies are still out by the island.

LA PAZ

La Paz fishing has been our “cooler-filler” action. The dorado have been 10-40 pounds regularly with a number of fish in the great 15-20 pound category. Lots of fun. Plenty strong without destroying anyone! I think the fact that we have move live bait in our La Paz area has made a difference. In addition to the dorado we are getting hookups with striped marlin and sails as well. We did some schools of roosters along the beaches and some of our guys that went after pargo and cabrilla got schooled on some big fish that took them to the rocks!

This is the “OH NO” moment when your reel is screeching…your arms are aching…your rod is bent when you see the big monster 45-pound dorado and you realize you only have 30-pound equipment! Becky Csutoras took this great shot of her dad’s fish as it made that big jump. Yes, he did get the fish. See the tired angler below…he fought it for 45 minutes!

Don White always does well. He was just off Punta Perico with Captain Pancho when he tied into this baby blue marlin. Happily released! Check out the video below of the unceremonious, but successful release. The marlin was not complaining. Congrats to our amigo, Don, who visits from Oregeon each year!

Becky Csutoras, is normally travellng all over the country as an accountant, but she takes some time each year to get in some fishing with us at Tailhunters. She has to be one of the happiest fisher people we ever see. Every day is a “GREAT DAY!” Check our this fine dorado she caught off Las Arenas! She did well all week!

Start ’em young! Six-year-old Roman, gets a hand from his grandma, Kelly Jimenez, with a nice bull dorado standing on the beach at Bahia de Los Muertos. “Romo” had himself a great time all week helping grandma and grandpa to fish!

John Russell told me, “They fight harder than salmon!” He used to be a salmon fishing guide. Visiting us from Milpitas CA, he put the hurt on this colorful big bull dorado fishing near Espirito Santo Island north of La Paz. Great colors…big fish!

My old classmate from law school, Skip Coomber in the center with friends and family got out for a day even during the ugly cloudy weather and got a few dorado. Skips daughter, Amelia, in the gray t-shirt is with her girlfriends Haleigh and Isabella…all 3 girls on a last hurrah before staring their respective college careers in several weeks!

She never fails to get big fish! Oregon in the house, Debbie White in flat water with another big dorado on her scoreboard! Punta Arenas in the background. Each year, Debbie makes us the best homemade moonshine “Apple Pie” for our Oregon show.

John Gothie had just a few days to spend with us, but made the most of it with a nice wahoo plus some fun dorado while fishing with Captain Adolfo and our Tailhunter Las Arenas fleet.

TROPICAL STORM DROPS SOME RAIN AND DAMPENS FISHING

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of June 30-July 6, 2014

Rain cells moving through the area and bringing a mix of some thundershowers, drizzle, wave surge and winds marred some of the fishing. Fortunately, it wasn’t a hurricane, but just some tropical storms. In most cases, the rain didn’t get anyone wet until the afternoons when the fishermen were already back and it really cooled things off, but it did rob sunshine from vacationers looking for more sunshine than we got this week.

It was very tropical. It could rain for 5 minutes or two hours. It could rain on one spot but then 200 yards away, it would be bone dry. An hour later, it would change again. Or not rain at all until the next day.

Again, the most cooperative species were the dorado. Both our Tailhunter Las Arenas fleet and our Tailhunter La Paz fleet had some good results that differed from day-to-day and boat-to-boat.

LAS ARENAS

At Las Arenas, there was again, no shortage of little firecracker 3-10 pound dorado. Some days, all you wanted. There were some billfish hooked and we did get a few wahoo and pargo. The big roosterfish are still around, but most of the focus has been on the bluewater species.

The week started OK, but then the skies would darken and each day, the winds and waters got a little rougher as we got the tail end of the storm and the periphery of the rain. At least, there wasn’t alot of wind, but it still wasn’t real comfortable towards the end of the week. We actually, had most of our fishermen move over to fish with our La Paz fleet where the fish were at least a big larger.

LA PAZ

For our Tailhunter La Paz fleet, the dorado were a bit bigger and went normally 10-30 pounds and were in areas scattered around Espirito Santo Island and the western side of Cerralvo Island. After the storm clouds moved off, waters went back to calm and flat pretty quickly. We did get some dorado up to the 40-pound class and other large ones lost. Billfish were also in the area with most fish getting released. Decent live caballitos for bait.

Keep an eye out. There’s alot of sealife out. Turtles…manta rays…whale sharks…blue whales were all seen this week! Water’s 85 degrees. Jump in!

According to the forecast, we’re gonna get a little more rain at times at least through next week. But, every day the forecast changes. As of writing this, there’s not a cloud in the sky and it’s brilliant sunshine and now they are saying no rain! Just come fish!

Long time amigo, Rick Kasper, went fishing with his son, Kasey and friend Mario from Texas and had a pretty good day with some nice dorado and a striped marlin they were unable to release after it swallowed the lure. Both marlin, sailfish and dorado were good bets this past week.

From Arizona, Jolly Jaeger and husband Dwight came down this week and took some of the nice bull dorado that have been showing up recently.

Johnny Enright brought grandson Dawson down for 3 days of fishing and show off a trophy dorado and some others on the rack. However, check out the big pompano also on the rack. It’s our first of the season!

Every year, Don and Debbie White from Oregon come spend a few weeks with us and always catch fish! This particular day, they not only got dorado you see here, but also caught and released a blue marlin estimated at about 120 pounds.

Garrett santana sailfish tags 6-14 small

Three years ago when he was 9 years-old, Garrett Santana came down to fish with us and got into some nice dorado. He came to visit us again this past week and not only caught a mess of dorado, but also put the wood to this huge sailfish all by himself and refused any help! Captain Raul helps out. Nicely done, youngster!

Rex Smith from Phoenix, Arizona has been visiting us for years. As usual, he caught lots of dorado, but over the years had never caught a pargo…until this past week! He took this tasty pargo mulato (barred pargo) fishing withour Tailhunter La Paz Fleet.

Our wine-making friends from Yakima, Washington, Chuck and Claudia Fiola had fun with the dorado and fishing with our Tailhunter La Paz fleet last week.

DORADO KEEP RODS BENT FOR THE WEEK RAIN ON THE WAY?

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of June 22-29, 2014

It wasn’t a bad week of fishing. It was a “mixed” week of fishing. Dorado surely did their part and kept everyone smiling, but things seemed to change from Las Arenas to La Paz and from day-to-day and indeed from one pangs-to-the-next!

TAILHUNTER LAS ARENAS FLEET

We sort of re-bounded from last week when fishing was sluggish and all we had were some more of those pesky mosquito-size dorado everywhere. It might have been a combination of lack of bait coupled with the fact that last week there were SOOOO many boats out there on the fishing grounds the fish just got lock jawed!

This week was much better. The biggest news was a splash of tuna…yes 15-40 pound yellowfin tuna that made their first appearance off Cerralvo Island and several boats got into them. Usually, these fish are moving too fast and no one can get into them, but we also had a school of 50 pounders that went crashing by some shocked fishermen at the north end of the island as well. So, the fish are around and hopefully, we’ll see more of them because in subsequent days, our recon trips to look for the school went for nothing.

However, the dorado were surely more cooperative. Some larger fish in the 20-40 pound class were taken, plus more billfish including some blue marlin we hooked and either lost or released.

Other species: cabrilla, jack crevalle, bonito, pargo, pompano…we had several wahoo bite off, but no fish boated

TAILHUNTER LA PAZ FLEET

Much better for quality and quantity this week for dorado. Fish ran 10-40 pounds and limits were common with many fish lost and many released. We do have live bait in the form of caballitos and mackerel, but a big error with the fishermen is not letting the dorado really chomp down on the baits and giving the dorado enough time to get the hooks in their mouths. These dorado are so voracious that even small dorado will charge baits that areas big as them making you wonder how they even get an 8 inch bait into their little mouths. But, they will hit it so you just have to be patient before pulling the trigger and setting the hooks.

The fish are around Espirito Santo Island and as close as right in La Paz Bay, but the larger fish are all the way around the corner around Las Cruces, El Rosario and Punta Gorda. It takes while to get there, but it’s worth it and the fish can be as close as just a few yards off the beach in the calm protected waters near those areas.

We are also getting some good bites on sailfish and marlin as well in the same areas.

OTHER SPECIES: Since everyone is concentrating on the blue water species like dorado, we’ve found some spots holding some BIG cabrilla and pargo that are willing to bite, but getting these beasts out’ve the rocks once you hook them is the trick and the fish usually wins!

WEATHER

Usually not much to say. It’s sunny today. It was sunny yesterday. It will be sunny tomorrow. Water about 84 degrees. Nights about 72. Yawn…

Seriously, it’s been a tad humid and in the mid 90’s, but this week the forecast is showing some afternoon thundershowers coming our way. Very tropical. I don’t think it will affect our fishermen very much and, as of the time of this writing, these are not hurricanes, but merely some rain cells moving our way. We’ll keep an eye out! Might actually be very refreshing!
