First-time visitor to La Paz with Tailhunters, Jack Calafato from San Diego got one of the larger dorado of the week scoring with this nice bull on his first day of fishing while on the water near Bahia de los Muertos.

Our good friend for many years, Bob Lederer, from Massachusetts with Captain Ramiro and a trophy bull dorado taken at Las Arenas.

Somewhere behind this fat round roosterfish is Rich Normyle from Bangor, Pennsylvania. His first bait hit the water and got spanked by the big fish and took 20 minutes to get to the boat. It was photo’d and released. Captain Raul with the Tailhunter La Paz fleet looks on and “helps” with the tail!

Captain Pancho is all smiles with our Oregon amiga, Mitch Bohna, and her dorado she hooked very close to the beach off Boca de Alamo.

Not a bad start to several days of fishing. Dennis Adair from N. California and Doug Oclassen from Colorado pose with a nice bunch of mahi on the sand.

Big smiles from Kris Brownlee who gets a hand from husband, Luke, with this fine roosterfish that chased a live ladyfish between Boca de Alamo and Bahia de Los Muertos justt off the rocks. They caught and released several nice fish. They’re from Rock Springs, Wyoming.

Captain Armando poses with our amiga, Shelley McDonell on the sand with a nice bull dorado that still has its colors. Shelley and Captain Armando always make a good team every year.

The ladies had a good week! Captain Jorge and Patty Lovato from the Denver, Colorado area on her first trip to fish with us in La Paz.

OC in the house! From S. California, Brendan Rowland, Dr. Mark Mulkerin and Ed Begany spent a few days fishing with us at Tailhunter and got into some good action with 2 days fishing at Las Arenas.

Dennie Dyer and Matt Lederer were just fishing with us and insist they got a yellowtail! Take a look. It’s hard to tell from the photo, but Dennie does seem to be holding a yellowtail…a fish we only catch in the colder waters! It might be a rainbow runner (yellowtail cousin), but hard to tell. Still a nice catch and tasty too…with the dorado!

DORADO KICK IT IN AT LAS ARENAS FINALLY !

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Aug. 3-10, 2014

Once again, dorado really kept up the for both our Tailhunter fleets this past week. Weather and water were fairly cooperative and threats of rain, while bringing some clouds, never materialized and, instead helped keep the heat away, although the humidity was still pretty thick. All-in-all, a pretty good week of action!

LAS ARENAS

Over the past few weeks, this has been our tougher spot. There have been fish there all year, but lots of small fish and not a whole lot else. It if weren’t for the rooster fish there or the fortuitous marlin or sailfish plus jack crevalle and bonito, it would be a real yawner. Don’t get me wrong. Still good fishing! But, historically, this time of year, Las Arenas should be on fire instead of a steady smolder. But, we’ve been spoiled all these years. The lack of bait hasn’t helped.

Many of or clients have switched to our other fleet at La Paz to get not only more fish, but bigger fish!

Not so, this past week. We actually had the migration of clients doing just the opposite! We had clients wanting to spend more time fishing Las Arenas than La Paz.

For one, it was a little easier to get bait. In fact, we even had some small sardines by the end of the week. Whether the fishing was a function of the bait, or there were simply more fish in the water, the quantity as well as the quality o fish improved.

There still weren’t alot of “beast fish” with most of the larger fish being 20 pounders or so with a few 40 pound dorado. But, the “smaller fish” were much better. Instead of the 5 pound punks we were getting all season, the upgraded models were 10-12 pounders and limits of fish were fairly common. As one of our anglers said, “We could honestly have caught 10, 20 or more dorado each day, if it wasn’t for the fact that we wanted to get more variety and went chasing other species 1/2 way through the day. We got all the dorado we wanted!”

Sorry, no tuna have shown up…yet! And wahoo fishing hasn’t been so great either the last few weeks. However, there’s quite a few marlin and sailfish around if you want to chase them.

Even our flyfishermen got into the fish this week as well!

LA PAZ

For the past few weeks, if you wanted to fill your ice chest, we had you fishing with our La Paz fleet. More and bigger fish had been the rule rather than the exception.

This past week, Las Arenas actually stepped out a little better.

It was still good for our La Paz anglers, but it seemed like there were more small fish than normal and not as many. However, if you wanted a shot at a 30-40 pounder, La Paz still gave you the best opportunity at a trophy.

The fish are in a wide area. You can seriously find fish right in the bay. In fact, we can see dorado, roosters and jack crevalle breaking just a few hundred yards in front of our Tailhunter Restaurant every day from our 2nd and 3rd floor terraces and birds working the schools like crazy. So, if you honestly didn’t want to go out too far, the bay is definitely holding fish.

Other areas are just south of Espirito Santo Island and along the current breaks west and east of the island. Another hot spot that’s actually being shared by both our Las Arenas and our La Paz fleet is just offshore from El Rosario/ Las Cruces/ Punta Gorda north of El Sargento. Some of our largest fish every week come from that drop off area where the shallow water falls off into the trench.

If you’re looking for billfish, sails and marlin are being caught right in the middle of schools of small dorado. Presumably, the billfish are in the schools feeding on the smaller fry dorado.

Roosters are getting round along the beaches too! Still some hog 40-60 pounders around.

This is the best mustache of the week! Don Slaiman and Captain Pancho from our Tailhunter Las Arenas fleet bust out the big smiles with two nice bull dorado on the beach.

Chris Chang owns an organic nursery in Canada and had never fished in Mexico before, but fishing with Tailhunters got plenty of dorado and, on his last day, a huge 300 pound blue marlin north of La Paz that he fought on a Penn 6/0 reel with 60 pound test and put in the boat in only about an hour. The gut hooked fish inhaled the green and orange lure all the way down it’s gullet. He was fishing with popular Captain Rogelio “Jolly Roger” Camacho.

There’s a zillion good things going on in this photo of Tyler Emard from Fullerton CA. Fishing with Captain Rogelio from our Taihunter La Paz fleet, Tyler fought this dorado…his first and biggest…for 20 minutes on light tackle…no belt…all arms and shoulders! He’s headed to the University of Arizona in a few weeks! Great colors on this photo!

The skies went from clear to this…as a wave or darkness hits the beach at Bahia de Los Muertos. There had been absolutely nothing on the advisories or radar about this. That’s why they are called “toritos.” (little bulls). These storms come out of nowhere with thunder, lightning, wind and rain and it’s almost like a baby hurricane. Ominous. The pangas had to scramble back to the beach for cover.

Seven minutes after the first photo, here’s what the beach looked like at Bahia de Los Muertos…a malestrom! Thirty minutes later, the sun was out…

Las Arenas provided some good action this week for Tailhunter clients including Steve Holguin from Los Angeles and his son, Marcos who is attending college in New York as the pair show off a set of dorado standing on the beach at Bahia de los Muertos with Captain Jorge of the Tailhunter fleet.

Susie Waters had never fished La Paz or ocean-fished before, but broke into it big time with a couple of days on the water with our Tailhunter La Paz fleet. This is just a super photo of her hanging the fish all by herself with big smiles.

Long Beach fishing veteran, Zach Linden, raced down for a last-minute trip this week and a couple of days of fishing. The fish gods smiled and Zach did some great action on ultralight tackle including this pair of La Paz dorado.

Rebecca Kendrick got into the thick of the dorado action with this nice bull mahi fishing with Captain Alfredo and deckie Blas. She had always wanted to fish Mexico and salt water and had a great first experience with a number of nice fish over several days of fishing.

It’s got a little sand on the forehead, but a great photo of Peter Knapp and Captain Pancho on the beach at Las Arenas with this nice-sized bull.

Grant Stark and Levi Fadoul put the wood to this thick bull dorado fishing north of La Paz last week. These two guys had too much fun all week. Always seemed to be cracking up!

UNPREDICTABLE EL NINO CONDITIONS AFFECT FISHING BUT DORADO DO THEIR BEST

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of July 20-27, 2014

With the exception of another of those surprise “torito” (little bull) storms that popped up on Thursday, it was a pretty good week of fishing for the most part.

This time of year, waters are extremely warm…actually, warmer than usual…as a result of the “el nino” situation. This has given rise to rapidly forming storms that are not shown on weather advisories in the morning. However, out of seemingly clear skies, huge thunderheads suddenly build and the skies grow dark within minutes. Winds start whipping and wave emerge from calm seas turning the ocean into churning froth. Wind-driven rain doesn’t fall so much as it shoots sideways from the gusts. It’s time to get the heck off the water!

Several weeks ago, one of these storms turned into a huge waterspout between Cerralvo Island and El Sargento and Las Arenas. We didn’t quite get that this week, but in the span of about 10 minutes clear skies went dark and the oceans got treacherous. The pangas had barely been on the water, but found themselves racing back to the beach made more perilous by waves now pounding the sands where the pangas had to land. Lighting strikes illuminated everyone scrambling around for shelter. Cell phone and electrical power gets cut off.

As the rains hit and everyone hunkers down….that’s pretty much all you can do. There’s a reason they call these “little bulls.” Within an hour or two…sometimes in the span of minutes…it’s over. The sun blazes back out. The winds turn off. The skies go clear and flat. Except for puddles of water, there’s no trace.

And that’s what happened Thursday morning.

But, the rest of the week was pretty grand!

LAS ARENAS

Fishing definitely improved over the week before. Again, dorado were center stage, but there were fewer punk 5 pound dorado and more respectable 10-20 pounders and all willing to charge pretty much water was in the water. Some boats did better than others, but then the next day the boat that did poorly would be the big boy boat. Consistently , ever panga we put on the water caught fish…or had opportunities to catch fish. One of the big problems is that the baits we have tend to be large. Hence, it takes longer than normal for the fish to really chomp the bait and get a hook down in their mouths. Anxious anglers would often tell me they pulled the trigger too soon before the dorado could eat and they would lose the hook-set and half-a-bait would come flying back to the boat…sans dorado!

LA PAZ

Still our most consistent area. Our La Paz boats rocked some really nice 20-40 pound fish this week as they have now since June. The fish extend right from La Paz Bay towards Espirito Santo Island then around the corner to about El Rosario/ Las Cruces where the larger bulls seem to have taken residence not too far from the beach. Co-incidentally, that’s where large schools of baitfish have been seen. We also got some roosterfish off the beaches.

The bigger news is the increased incidence of hookups with billfish including larger-than-normal sailfish and even some blue marlin. I don’t remember seeing so many hookups on blue marlin as I have the past two or three weeks. Most of the sails and marlin are getting released, but one fish that couldn’t be released was a hefty 300-pound blue.

WEATHER

El Nino effects keep coming. Days can start out with bright brilliant sunshine but by afternoon, the clouds roll in and we get tropical storms that can be pretty crazy. It can rain in one place and 100 yards away, it’s bone dry! And the rain can last 5 minutes of an hour. Then the sun comes blazing out. But, there’s some predictions of more afternoon rain this week.

WHOAAA!!!! That’s a big fat rooster! Captain Jorge helps out Robert Rost who was fishing with us for his first time from Boise, Idaho! Robert had super week topped by this huge rooster they caught and released near Punta Arenas!

That’s a big wahoo for Ty Mitchell from Washington on his 2nd trip with us. He got this trophy off Cerralvo Island fishing with our Tailhunter Las Arenas fleet!

Tiffany FLOYD could NOT have been a more fun person to come down to fish! I don’t think she ever stopped laughing or smiling and this big sailfish with Captain Joel put a big smile on her face. She was down celebrating her anniversary and she caught this just outside La Paz Bay!

OH the joy! This is just pure ecstasy! Mike Shepherd had a great week with us, but a big dorado eluded him all week. But at the last hour with almost his last bait on the last day, he finally put the wood to this nice bull dorado! Great facial expression, Mike! CLASSIC!

I think this should be their new 2014 Christmas card photo! The Nichols family run a big time fishing operation out’ve Florida and came down for a few days to visit. They all got and released their first roosterfish plus some nice dorado including this trophy bull that ended up for dinner at Tailhunter Restaurant!

Dennis Cudal knew this one was headed to the grill when he stuck this nice big barred pargo around Espirito Santo Island.

Check this off the bucket list! Nothing like an exotic roosterfish on the line! Jeff FLOYD from Idaho, was fishing with Captain Pancho literally just a few yards from the beach at Las Arenas and caught and released this big time rooster!

An extended Father’s Day Week plus graduation present for Craig and Ashley Sanford from the Phoenix AZ area where they show off quite a variety of fish they caught with our Tailhunter Las Arenas fleet including cabrilla, bonito, triggerfish and dorado!

Great story. Mike Shepherd was trolling a big bait in the shallow waters near Punta Perrico when his rod went off and all heck broke loose. He started yelling, “MARLIN! MARLIN!” Captain Jorge was tying up some lines and not looking and said, “There’s no marlin here!” Until he looked up! MIke had on a fish estimated at well over 200 pounds! Unfortunately, only 30 pound test so they hung on as best as they could while wife, Candi snapped photos! Folks ask all the time for “bigger boats” so they can go out further and catch “bigger fish!” Well, as you can see, we don’t have to go far and our pangas do just fine!

Our good amigo, Don Busse, always does well and he put this big pargo on board at Las Arenas and ended up bringing it to our Tailhunter Restaurant for dinner!

It was a good week for big barred pargo! Al Nojadera has been fishing with us for alot of years and shows off one of his big pargo.

Gary Pilkington is from Northern Cal and fished with Captain Pancho. Gary was on his 2nd visit with us and wanted to get a rooster! Mission accomplished with this caught-and-released trophy!

Luke Appel from Malibu took a nice picture and a great photo of this barred pargo in full raging colors! These are tough tough fish when hooked and fight like beasts!

This is our rockstar, Rick Kasper, who always gets fish with us. Rick has a place our there near La Paz now and spends several weeks hanging out and fishing!

ROOSTERS DORADO LIGHT IT UP WITH THE FULL MOON…AND ANOTHER MISSED HURRICANE!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of June 8-15 2014

Another fairly solid week of fishing even with the full moon…even with another hurricane missing us and blowing out to sea (Christina!)… but the difference between our anglers who fished with our Las Arenas fleet and those who fished with our La Paz fleet was like night and day…in a good way! Fortunately, for us, our clients get to fish both sides if they so choose!

For Las Arenas, at times, the winds plus the big swell generated by hurricane Cristina far to the south had to be contended with and made for some bouncy days, especially towards the end of the week. The hurricane was up to a category 4 with winds up to 170 mph, but thankfully banked out to the west before it got up to the Baja.

However, it still pushed residual winds and waves our way and up the Sea of Cortez. The surfers at Land’s End by Cabo and also around Todos Santos were loving the big waves with the thick lips!

But, at Las Arenas, we continued with swarms of little dorado. So many that some of the anglers are calling it “the nursery” where it was not uncommon to hook and release a dozen or more dorado in short order of fish no bigger than 3-5 pounds! Great light tackle action, but very few fish larger than that. The good thing is that the way dorado grow, in just a few months, these fish will be 15-20 pounders! So, it’s good that many are getting released.

The better action was on the wahoo, especially earlier in the week when that area south of Cerralvo Island kicked out another nice jag of 20-40 pound speedsters on trolled lures like the Rapala X-Raps and Yo-Zuri Magnums. For every fish taken, at least 2 more were lost so there’s some fish out there.

The other part of Las Arenas were the big roosters that seemed to pop up again with a vengeance. We had several days mid-week when, as one angler said, “Every bait thrown in the water generated an immediate hammer from a big rooster!” The fish this week were as “small” as 35-40 pounds, but we had some larger estimated in the 60-85 pound class (by the captains!).

For La Paz anglers, it was a completely different story altogether! The dorado were bigger. They were more abundant and they really bent rods and went 15-40 pounds with some larger ones lost. The bonus was the many of the best bites were literally right in La Paz Bay or just outside without having to go very far. As well, where the smaller dorado were found, marlin and sailfish were in the same areas either eating the same baits or else feeding on the small dorado themselves.

All hail the “Wahoo King!” Mike Guest from Phoenix Arizona has been coming to fish with Tailhunters in La Paz for years and never got a wahoo despite great efforts. This past week after only two days he got three wahoo and lost two other, but did get this one huge beast estimated at 60-70 pounds near Cerralvo Island. Amigo, Esteban Romero, gives a hand!

Cole Chavira from Solana Beach CA always smokes the fish here in La Paz since he was little kid. He’s now in high school and nothing changes. He put the wood to this big cabrilla on a deep jigged yo-yo iron!

He came all the way from Lisbon, North Dakota, but Joe Nelson told us, “It’s been as cold as 30 degrees below zero back home” and he wanted some sunshine and his first rooster fish! He got both including this fat rooster off the rocks at Punta Perico with Captain Archangel of the Tailhunter fleet.

Al Rodriguez has fished in La Paz and Baja but NEVER got a dorado so he really focused on one this past week. He did that…and MORE! Well done, Al. He nailed this nice bull just outside of La Paz Bay.

Malibu in the house! Luke Appel dropped the hammer on this sweet amberjack off Isla Espirito Santo on a heavy jig north of La Paz.

Gabe Rodriguez was in town with his dad and to celebrate his 40th birthday doing some fishing. He and dad both got into the dorado with Captain Rogelio of our Tailhunter La Paz fleet. Feliz cumpleanos!

Happy Honeymoon! Pat Snyder from Orangevale CA said this fish “beat him up” for 30 minutes while fishing with Captain Armando. He was here on his first trip to La Paz and to celebrate his first week of marriage! Congrats to him and Kathy!

Colin Reed from San Diego with a speedy wahoo he caught off Cerralvo Island where the wahoo bite has been pretty steady for several weeks!

Pretty good for a first day fishing and first time to La Paz for brothers Andew and Ian Vale Cruz from San Diego. They got a variety of fish including these two trophys. Andrew holds up a big dog-tooth snapper and Ian has his first wahoo. Captain Pancho fails the photo bomb!

Everyone was in on the dorado bite including amiga, Nina Duc Le and son, Will, from Albuquerque, New Mexico. Over 3 days fishing they got marlin, dorado, bonito, and others!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of June 1-8, 2014

Good solid fishing this week for both of our Tailhunter Fleets for once. Usually, either the La Paz fleet is doing better than our Las Arenas fleet or vice versa!

However, this week, I would have to say that for once, we had alot more consistency which made for some good catches and action for our anglers although here and there, some anemia still persisted. Basically, some boats did better than others on a given day. But, overall, everyone got fish.

For our Las Arenas anglers, the big news continues to be the wahoo bite around Cerralvo Island with some bruiser wahoo literally hammering the Yo-Zuri and especially the Rapala X-Rap lures which seem to be the season’s new-found “hot lure”. Run ‘em deep and they get bit!

I gotta say, there’s gotta be some big time wahoo underwater because even with wire, some of the lures are still getting bit off. And…get this…we’ve had some lures literally getting CRUSHED! I mean, how often do you ever hear of a hard-bodied lure like a Rapala getting broken or even smashed by the teeth! Or the treble hooks getting straightened out! That’s a big mean fish that can do that! We had several fish this week tickle the 50-pound mark and even one estimated at 70 pounds!

The other benefit of these deep running X-raps that can run 30’ down is that we’re actually getting some huge pargo on them! (By the way, I am NOT a rep for Rapala! Prior to this, I actually liked the Yo-Zuris better because the older metal-lipped Rapalas got “out of tune” too easily after a bonito slammed them. But the new ones have acrylic lips that dive deep and don’t get all screwy!).

The other big star at Las Arenas has been the rooster fish. Not as many “big fish” this week compared to other weeks when we had 50-90 pound roosters, but 30-45 pounders this week are nothing to sneeze at if you’ve ever gotten bent on one! For many, this is an opportunity to finally get a rooster checked-off the bucket list and, also for many, they’ve never had a fish this big to contend with. As one of our anglers told me later, “I don’t know what I was thinking asking for a 100-pound fish! Prior to this, I had only caught a 40-pound salmon. After 15 minutes on a 30 pound rooster, I was ready to pass off the rod to my friend and sit down with a beer! These fish don’t give up!”

For dorado at Las Arenas there were polar opposites. There’s a spot we’re starting to call the “nursery.” There are so many 3 to 8 pound dorado there that you can hook a dozen quite easily and the flyfishers and light tackle anglers are having a blast.

Beyond that, there’s very little in between. The dorado then jump up into the 25-30 pound class! There’s a few out there and bigger ones as well.

For our La Paz fleet, dorado are the name of the game. Limits or near limits of 15-40 pound fish are just inside La Paz Bay and some of our boats actually quit early and came back with anglers saying “no mas!” Full fish boxes and ice chests after a few hours fishing were not uncommon. Other anglers not doing as well, still had opportunities with quite a few fish lost to either inexperience or simply tough luck…but still plenty of action!

On a final note…alot more marlin and sailfish hooks ups this week with more billfish entering th area. By my count, our two fleets hooked perhaps a dozen billfish of varying sizes including one blue marlin and the rest being 100 pound stripers and sailfish. One fish brought in and the others either got un-bottoned or released.

We got into some wahoo this week and we’re not surprised that young Taylor Murphy fishing with grandpa Roger Thompson got one of them. She always does well. A purple Rapala off the south end of Cerralvo Island did the trick.

Birthday girl! Karyn Jennings was fishing with her husband Greg and had a good birthday week with us in La Paz. Here she shows off a day’s catch with a great mix of dorado, cabrilla and wahoo fishing with our Tailhunter Las Arenas fleet. A good bunch of fillets was cooked up at our Tailhunter Restaurant! Karyn is from Colorado.

First timer, Steve Bradley who lives in Northern California on the Smith River was out with Tailhunter Captain Pancho and got his first dorado just outside of Bahia de Los Muertos. He also got his first rooster, a 30 pounder that was released and lost a larger fish as well.

John Nagy from Marina del Ray CA slips quietly in and out’ve La Paz and just nails the fish! I think he got our largest wahoo of the week with this 4- pounder off the south side of Cerralvo Island on a blue and white Rapala. He was fisihing with our Tailhunter driver, Esteban and they also got one other wahoo, 2 pargo, and released a marlin. Nicely done!

Captain Victor “El Jefe” from our Tailhunter Las Arenas fleet poses with first-timer, Ron Kling from Byers, Colorado who came down to catch his first roosterfish. On this particular day, he got 5 roosters between 40 and 50 pounds which he released! And he kept this nice dorado for dinner!

Guys come for years trying to get a sniff from a wahoo fishing our area. Greg Jennings nailed one his first try fishing with our Taihunter Las Arenas fleet just outside of Bahia de Los Muertos.

FISHING SLOWLY GETS BETTER WITH WARMER TEMPS

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of April 20-27, 2014

There were good and there were bad things about this past week of fishing. Let’s start with the bad.

There were some really windy days. Some cooler water temps. But those things are to be expected this time of year when things are in transition between the warm and colder seasons. Still, it didn’t always make for the best fishing conditions nor, did it help with getting bait. Basically, it’s almost like a chart…the higher the wind, the poorer the fishing. The lower the wind, the better the fishing. Overall, I’d give this week a so-so rating in terms of fishing. It’s been worse. But, normally, it’s a whole lot better.

But, let’s focus on some of the positives.

Take a look at some of this week’s photos. Yup…wahoo made a nice surprising reappearance this week. Around the north and sound end of Cerralvo Island, the speedy skinnies were around and willing to eat slow trolled Rapalas and bait. Sizes ranged from pinky 15 pounders up to about 40 pounds.

Additionally, we had a really great week on the roosters for our Las Arenas anglers. I think just about everyone who really wanted to check “rooster fish” off the bucket list got at least one. I don’t have any photos this week because, with much appreciation, all the roosters were released! But, there were some nice quality fish taken off the sandy beach areas with fish in the 20-45 pound size and some larger that were lost.

To the good stuff, add in a few marlin coming alive and taking some hits, but all of them coming off plus the dorado were still around although not in big numbers as previous weeks. I still consider the dorado to be our bread-and-butter fish at the moment. Both our Las Arenas and La Paz fleet had dorado as their predominant go-to fish. Some decent 20 pounders in the mix, but some larger fish lost to pilot error!

Hope the winds slow down and the bait gets better! Should all improve as we move closer to summer!

SPRINGTIME CONDITIONS BRING VARIETY!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of March 23-30, 2014

Except for a few breezy days, it was more like late spring/ early summer style fishing this past week. Air temps were in the low to mid-80’s and actually pretty pleasant. Water temperatures which have risen unseasonably high have been in the mid-70’s to low 80’s.

The resulting effect was a decent mix of fish. Some cool water fish. Some warm water fish. But, overall a nice variety.

The cooler water fish mostly taken inshore and in shallow areas included some nice yellowtail up to 25 pounds. Nothing widespread, but a smattering here and there. As well, we took some nice slugger pargo, cabrilla and sierra around both islands. Some good fish were lost to the rocks…not unusual when big fish are holding close to structure like reefs and rocks!

Warm water fish…well, once again…dorado! We’ve been getting them on and off for about 2 months now. Way early for a normal season, but once again the warm water species were found anywhere from the islands, to the shallows around the beaches, near the buoys and free-swimming in the channel. No great numbers, but every day a few dorado here and there. Mixed with the other species, it made for some interesting boxes of fish coming back in our pangas each day.

We’re going to keep an eye on these water temperatures! Those temperatures will dictate what we’ll be catching.

We’re finally headed home to La Paz. After almost 3 months on the road encompassing almost 15,000 miles of driving…9 states…10 hunting and fishing shows including: Sacramento, Denver, Puyallup (Seattle), Portland, Yakima, Phoenix, Boise, Long Beach, Salt Lake City and this past week in San Diego. Whew!!!

And what a grand time we had…almost 20 years doing this now and every year it just gets better and better! Jill and I want to thank all our amigos who came to see us at the shows and everyone during the 3 months for their friendship, support, encouragement and smiles. And to all our friends for making us feel welcome and all the hospitality on the road…all the gifts…food…drinks…invitations…Tailhunter tribe members are the best!

Now, let’s head home to La Paz and get some fish! God bless you all!

This is more like it for March fishing! Joe Arata of Pacifica CA strikes the hot pose with a slugger yellowtail he took on the iron off Cerralvo Island. Yellowtail were a bit more predominant this week.

What the heck! Roger Thompson is one of the best anglers we know. He was throwing the iron for yellowtail and said his jig barely hit the water when this big-time marlin smacked into it! On 40-pound test, he battled the big billfish for over an hour! Attempts to release the fish were not successful and the meat was donated. Marlin generally don’t show up for another 3 months or so! Just another indication that we’re going to see more warm water species showing up!

If there’s any question about the waters being warmer than usual, check out this crazy story from John Duteil who was visiting us from Canada:
We went to the beach at Tecolote and wow the fish were literally jumping out of the water. Two dorado came speeding right up to the shore, then started flipping around one made it back out to sea but the other was stuck. Our friend Dennis still eating his lunch walked over and picked him up. (Pics attached) moral of the story if you can catch them this easy on the shore imagine what you can do in a boat!! it is so easy to catch fish in La Paz they are literally jumping out of the water for you to catch!”

Best show of the season? Maybe so! Just finished up the mighty Fred Hall Fishing and Boating Show at the Long Beach Convention Center that went from Wednesday to Sunday! We hear it broke attendance records and the place was packed and the Tailhunter Booth never had a dull moment! Don Busse (far right) brought over his merry group to toast us with Jill leading the saludos at our booth! We saw a zillion friends and booked lots of fishing trips for 2014 to La Paz! Thanks, Long Beach! Thanks to everyone! No onto Salt Lake City!

CAN IT GET STRANGER? WATERS WARM AND BRING TOP WATER SPECIES!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of March 2-9, 2014

So sorry. Impossible to write anything from the show and then I’m up to 3 or 4 a.m. just catching up. It’s after midnight now Sunday. If you can still use it, here’s some info:

The strange week early season continued this past week with more un-characteristic biters all week, but especially early in the week. In what seems like we may have by-passed our cold-water season and got right into spring-like conditions, we continue to hook up with a crazy variety of fish indicative of waters that are unseasonably warm!

We did get a few more big yellowtail this week, but the numbers are way off from what they should be. Normally, this time of the year, we are hammering big 25-40 pound ‘tails and getting 2-5 per panga not counting the ones we lose!

Instead, we are only getting about 3 – 10 per week! That’s it. They are a nice grade of fish, but the counts are not what they should be.

However, don’t panic! The slack is being taken up by other fish including dorado, wahoo…even marlin and we got a tuna (reportedly a 24-pound class yellowfin was taken!) this week as well. All of these are normally warm water species that we don’t see for another 2 months or so!

Mixing that in with some cabrilla and pargo and it’s making for an interesting “chop suey” of fish in the fish box these days. Will it continue?

I have no idea. We seem to get new surprises every week! Two things can happen. The waters will continue to warm in which case, forget the cold water species like the yellowtail an sierra and such. They’ll go deep or leave the area far too early!

Secondarily, they water will suddenly get cool and cold and we’ll lose the warm water species and by then it might also be too drastic of a change for the inshore species.

I tend to think the waters will continue to warm so look out…it’s going to be a season of early big fish!

LONG BEACH ROCKED! NOW HEADED TO SALT LAKE ISE SHOW!

Our booth in Long Beach was visited by so many super amigos but we never expected so many dignitaries from La Paz to come up as well including our amigo Agustin Olachea, head of the La Paz hotel association! It was great to see him at the show helping to promote tourism in our city!

We had an incredible run this past week at the Fred Hall Fishing and Boating Show at the Long Beach Convention Center. What a slamming good time seeing so many of our S. Cal friends and so many of our amigos in the fishing industry. It was often shoulder-to-shoulder in the aisles and the din of the crowd was so raucous that we had to yell to be heard! Couldn’t have been more fun and I also got to celebrate my birthday in the middle of about 10,000 of my best friends like I do every year! Thanks to everyone who came by to chat about fishing in La Paz and also wish me another good “trip around the sun!” It was a grand time!

But now…

Here we come Salt Lake City! Two more shows to go and Salt Lake it ALWAYS fun! We’ll be at the Expo Center in Sandy, Utah to be specific in that fine facility from Thursday to Sunday. In 20 years running our operations in La Paz, I’ve not had anyone pull up a big broomtail grouper like this. Leif (“Don’t call me “Garrett”) Dover from Atlanta GA has been fishing at least 2 times a year for many years and always sticks fish with us. He said this fish slammed into his jig and almost pulled him out’ve the boat. This is not just a trophy fish, it’s also an unusual catch!

Fishermen come for years trying to stick a trophy wahoo. Don Asp came down on his first trip from Minnesota and rips this sweet ‘hoo! He’s just trying to catch some sunshine and get in a little fishing. Instead he gets on of the most prized fish in Baja. He’s on the beach at Bahia de Los Muertos. Lots of wahoo this week. Unbelievable.

Ken Gragg (left) is one of our best amigos who fishes with us at Tailhunter several times a year and came down this past week with his son, Steve. They found the schools of big pargo liso off the rocks near Las Arenas. Tough fish to put in the boat!

OK…this one turned out to be the biggest amberjack of the week…maybe the year! Look at this beast that Capt. Hugo hung! The amberjack is the delicious big cousin of the yellowtail. These are generally not caught in our waters until later in the spring! Amigo, Roger Thompson, was on the boat and took the photo. Thanks, Rog!

Shellee Mittan from northern California and her husband, Bill, only had time to squeeze in one day of fishing and got some cabrilla (released) and these two nice sierra.

We have missed our amigo, Daryl Valdez from Bakersfield CA who usually visits us every year, but hasn’t been down in a bit. Great to see him and he got the largest pargo of the week…this fish estimated at 20-25 pounds.

Nice forktail! Joe Arata from Pacifca CA dropped a blue and white iron overboard and stuck it to this fat yellowtail off Cerralvo Island. The yellowtail haven’t been as prevailant as normal as water temps and bait conditions have been variable.

THE MOST AMAZING CRAZY WINTER WEEK OF FISHING!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Feb. 23 to March , 2014

This might have been the craziest week of winter fishing we’ve seen in our many years here. Mainly, it’s because it wasn’t winter fishing! I’m not sure what to call it or what to say about it!

In all honesty, the fishing action was really only so-so. We had a good number of anglers out there and it wasn’t crazy wide-open by any stretch. And it was better earlier in the week than later when it seemed to taper off.

However, what it lacked in numbers was made up for in quality. Great quality. Unbelievable quality. Just look at the photos!

Now, normally this time of year, we’re chasing cold water inshore fish. Species like sea bass (cabrilla), pargo (snapper), jack crevalle, pompano, sierra and the like. If conditions are right, we’re also getting the big pig yellowtail as well.

Well, the last few weeks we started getting some really strange biters and I think it culminated this week. In fact, it was a great indescribable week relatively speaking.

We did find the pargo. Some big ones right off Punta Perrico. But, we also got…get this..(drumroll)….wahoo! Dorado! A 180-pound striped marlin! Amberjack! And even a huge broom tail grouper!

What’s going on?

Maybe it’s the water temps being a little warmer than normal. Maybe it’s the lack of mackerel that usually draw the yellowtail up from the trenches. But, I have never seen a winter like this where we’re getting these species. Sure, every now and then someone gets one, but to have all of these species biting at the same time? Literally unheard of!

But, the anglers sure stuck some fish. Bait was still an issue, but using ballyhoo and slow trolling Rapalas and also those guys who dropped yo yo iron did well. Hot spots were all around Cerralvo Island, around the north and south ends were especially good. But also around Punta Perico fish were found. We’ll just have to keep an eye on things!

BRING ON THE BIG SHOW – TAILHUNTER HEADS TO LONG BEACH FRED HALL SHOW

Thanks to all of our new and old amigos in Boise who came to see us at the Idaho Sportsmans Show! We were slammed and had the best show of our 2014 sports tour! Lots of reservations for fishing with us this year and we’re looking forward to all the visit!
But now…we head to the big boy show of shows…the FRED HALL FISHING and HUNTING SHOW at the Long Beach Convention Center starting this Wednesday to Sunday!

We can’t say enough about this past week show at the Idaho Sportsmans’ Show in Boise Idaho. Thanks to everyone! The show was packed and our Tailhunter booth was slammed. We had some of our best day of the 2014 tour this past week and booked lots of new reservations for fishing this year! Just spectacular!

And now….

We head to the grand-daddy of shows! The Fred Hall Fishing and Hunting Show starts Wednesday and goes through Sunday at the Long Beach Convention Center. This show is huge so bring your walking shoes! There’s tons to see for the whole family. It takes some folks several days to walk through all the displays; check out all the gear for sale; check out the seminars and make their way through the whole show. This is a huge party. If you’ve never attended it’s the Woodstock of fishing shows on the West Coast. Come see us. We’ll be in our booth in our usual place in the middle of tackle row, next to Izorline fishing line and Whopper Stopper fishing rods. This is gonna be fun!

Yes! It’s February and we’re catching dorado! Normally, warm water fish, apparently, no one told the dorado as we keep running into them like this nice bull taken by our Washington amiga Carol Darby with Captain Gerardo.

Another surprise this week! Wahoo once again showed up near Cerralvo Island like this speedy ‘hoo with Captain Archangel.

Apparently, this is turning into one of the best whale-watching seasons in recent years! The whales are solid at Lopez Mateos at Bahia Magdalena and we’re running daily trips out to see them! Contact us for a trip of a lifetime getting close to these magnificent animals!

STRANGE MIX OF FISH AGAIN SURPRISE ANGLERS

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Feb. 16-23, 2014

Generally, not a bad week of fishing for our anglers, but again, just like the last few weeks, some unusual catches. It’s almost getting to be an old record but the catches just don’t seem to make sense!

This is winter and catches are generally inshore and consist of inshore COLD water species. Well, the bite has certainly been inshore, but the CATCH has been rather unusual. For the past few weeks, and again this week, we caught dorado! Dorado are warm water fish. We catch them in the summer and fall when the waters are warm.

What else is unusual is that the fish were mostly caught pretty close to shore…while fishing for WINTER fish like the cabrilla (sea bass) and sierra and species like that. We did indeed catch the sea bass, sierra, pargo and jack crevalle. But in the middle of that, it’s pretty surprising to also get dorado.

Likewise, also got a few wahoo as well. So, go figure. Again, the wahoo are usually trophy fish that we pursue in the warmer months! The wahoo ware taken off the north and south end of Cerralvo Island. We’ll just have to keep following this.

All week, we’ve got a full week of fishermen so we’ll have a better idea of what’s going on with the bite. Hopefully, find more pargo and yellowtail too!

TAILHUNTER TOUR MOVES ONTO BOISE, IDAHO!

Thanks to all our amigos who stopped by and everyone who came by to talk to us about fishing with us this year in La Paz. What the heck is going on? Wahoo in winter? Jack Steele originally from Seattle WA put this gorgeous ‘hoo on the boat fishing near Cerralvo Island late in the week. Check out the calm waters…it makes a difference!

Fat forktail! Charlie “Sticks” McGee is one of the best fishermen I know and a dynamite drummer and music teacher as well from San Diego. Our amigo stuck this thick yellowtail out in the channel north of La Paz.

When it comes to putting big fish in the boat, our amiga, Donna Thompson, from La Ventana via Long Beach CA holds a thick, fat wahoo…a personal best!

We’re smack in the middle of whale watching season and taking folks out daily to Bahia Magdalena to see the whales. Contact us for a once-in-a-lifetime experience and get close to these great animals. They normally start to leave around March so don’t delay!

Tailhunters is finally leaving the Pacific Northwest where we have been for the last month doing some outstanding shows in Puyallup WA (Seattle), Portland OR and Yakima WA! Thanks to everyone who has come by…old friends and new amigos! Lots of bookings for fishing with us in La Paz this year! But now, we leave the snow and rain and one of our favorite areas and head south all the way to the Phoenix ISE show where it’s supposed to be 80 degrees! THE WEEK IN SURPRISE BITE

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of February 9-16, 2014

An otherwise slow week was saved by a late week chew that turned up some quality fish.

As typical, we got the usual winds, especially early in the week. That never helps with the fishing but we come to expect that during the winter. Especially northern winds. It also really jacks up our ability to get live bait. But, as the week went on, the winds diminished.

And suddenly the bite turned on.

And it was a surprise. Usually, we look for inshore fish during winter. But instead, we got some real trophy stuff. Once again, just like last week, wahoo showed up around Cerralvo Island. Normally, it’s far too cold for us to be seeing these prized fish, but the boats took the at the north and south end of the island on slow trolled baits as well as lures. The fish were good quality too with fish going 20–50 pounds which are real slammers, especially when you consider that these are known to be the “fastest fish in the world” capable of blazing line off a reel at close to 70 mph!

But, on top of that, we also picked off a few dorado. Again, not only are these warm water fish, but we shouldn’t even be seeing these until about later March or April.

In addition to the wahoo and dorado, a few more of the yellowtail also bent the rods. These fish are more typical of this time of year and we should be going full bore on these any week now. So, it was encouraging to see more of these in the counts.

As for other species, we took some small pargo and snapper, cabrilla, and lots of bonito.

It’s been a great show season and Jill and Jonathan now leave the Pacific Northwest and the Yakima WA sportsmens show and head south to the Phoenix International Sportsmens Expo.

Our next show starting this week will be in the Cardinal Football Stadium where the NFL Cardinals play! This is a super show! Lots of stuff for the whole family! Come say hi!

TAILHUNTER ROAD TOUR TAKES IT TO PHOENIX

Our 2014 Tailhunter Road Tour takes to the road again this week. After an outstanding month in the Pacific Northwest attending shows in Washington and Oregon, we now drive south and take off our rain and snow gear and put on the shorts as we go to the International Sportsmans Expo in Phoenix, Arizona. This is really a super show right on the floor of the University of Phoenix Football stadium where the NFL Cardinals play! It’s a great place for a show and there’s always great weather, plenty of parking and lots to see!

The dates are Thursday to Sunday (Feb. 20-23rd).

Come say hi and chat with us about fishing with us in 2014 in La Paz. We have amigos from all over Arizona, California, Nevada and New Mexico as well as Utah and Idaho come to visit us.
