CRAZY WEEK…NOT ALOT OF QUANTITY…BUT SOME GREAT QUALITY!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Oct. 25-Nov. 2, 2014

It was a different kind of week.  It was good for good fish but not good for ALOT of fish!  Let me explain…

You’ve heard of “Quality over Quantity.”  Well, it was THAT kind of week.  There were NOT alot of fish by our standards although there were some nice flurries of dorado, bonito, jack crevalle, sierra and other fish that kept rods bent.

But, those fish could be there one day and gone the next.  Or they could be in one spot and move the next day or be there for 30 minutes of madness then the ocean would be calm again and not a fish in sight.  That’s just the way it is right now.  The seasons are changing.  Water and air temperatures are cooling and we’re transitioning to the winter season which is approaching.   Shadows are different.  Current are different.  The wind is starting to blow stronger from the north.  It can be a little choppier.  We’re going to get some days that the winds might even be too strong to fish comfortably.

The upside to all of this is that there are a tremendous number of species!

Just check out the photos!!!!  We probably had as many as a dozen different species of fish…inshore…offshore…blue water…rock fish…We never knew what our folks were going to come back with.

And that’s what made this week really different.

We didn’t have LOTS of fish.  We had a lot of DIFFERENT FISH.  AND we had some real QUALITY FISH!

Like check out the wahoo this week!  This had to be one of the best wahoo weeks of the season. We had one day when almost every one of our pangas hooked at least one wahoo around Cerralvo Island. And these were nice healthy 30-50 pound fish.

Also, for the first time in many months, we got 30-60 pound rooster fish and some huge dorado as well up to about 45 pounds and many others that were lost!

The dilemma in this kind of fishing is that you don’t get many chances.  If the fish aren’t milling about, you might get one or two big bites…FOR THE ENTIRE DAY!  It might be a big wahoo.  It might be a big dorado or rooster fish.  For whatever reason, if the fish gets off or you miss the bite or you have your beer in your hand…that’s it!  It’s a missed opportunity and the rest of the day could be nothing more than a few bonito.

Or, conversely, there’s two anglers in a panga and one gets a trophy of a lifetime and the other guys twiddles his thumbs the rest of the day.  So you get one really happy fella and one saying, “Fishing was really slow.”

One thing however…our ladies, kids and first-timers sure had it going on!  Many of them got the big wahoo or big dorado and many of our veteran Tailhunter anglers were the “other guy” in the boat relegated to taking photos!  But, it was great to see so many of the rookies kicking butt!  Still…I won’t kid you.  We did have some disappointed folks who ran into some tough fishing…which then often changed around the next day.  Or not…

I think we’re gonna see more of these variable conditions in the next coming weeks as we transition into winter.  Overall, however, you can’t ask for prettier conditions just to be here in La Paz.  Days are not humid.  Just nice sunshine and 85-90 degree air temps.  It looks like a postcard.  Most days are flat calm.  The water is still in the 80’s.  Night temps are comfortably in the 70’s.

One head’s up…looks like we do have a bit of rain coming this week with a late-season storm that could hit us mid-week and get us wet and stick us with some strong winds.  Then, it moves off quickly.

That’s our story!

AIRPORTS OPEN – FISHERMEN COMING BACK – SO ARE THE FISH!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Oct. 5-12, 2014

Since hurricane Odile, three weeks ago, we’ve played cat-and-mouse with some erratic weather that seems to keep popping up and dropping some thundershowers on us now and then.  Mostly, it’s been great weather, but like the rest of the season, we do have to keep watching the weather reports and the horizon to check for building thunderheads.

However, for the first time since as long as I can remember, I’m looking at the weather forecasts the last few days and into the next few weeks and there’s zero precipitation forecast.  There are no little “weather icons” on the internet with little clouds and thunderbolts or rain icons on top of the daily advisories!  We’ve got gorgeous 95 degree sunny weather for days and fishing conditions could not be better.

As for the fishing, it’s making a comeback.

The fish got hit pretty hard too with the crazy weather and green dirty water really mixed it up from the storms and the run-off and it takes times to settle in.  Each week, the water seems to get a little better.

Fishing isn’t great, but it’s good most days and there’s even some jags of “very good” thrown in.

LA PAZ FISHING

Dorado have been the most consistent players, especially for our Tailhunter La Paz fleet.  There are spots of dorado just inside La Paz Bay and in various places around Espirito Santo Island, but the best concentration and larger fish are around the Rosario / Las Cruces area in the channel between La Paz peninsula and Cerralvo Island.  Fish aren’t bit, but they’re fun decent fish of 10-20 pounds with an occasional 30 pounder.  Some days are better than others.  Some boats will get limits some days while others right next to them will hit only a handful of fish or less.  But, the fish are there!

Likewise, there seems to be a nice bit of marlin and sailfish around right now.  Most have been caught incidentally while fishing for other species, but we’ve been hooking them all last week.  Not alot, but every day is different.  We had one day where almost every one of our pangas hooked at least one billfish.  The next day there were only 2 hooked.  Next day nothing.  Day after that there were 4.  All fish either broke off or were released except one which was kept and donated.

As a little sidebar, we had 2 wahoo hooked and cut off as well this week.

Late update:  Got some wahoo late Saturday off Espirito Santo Island!

LAS ARENAS

This area has been a bit of a puzzle this past week.  The biggest news is that we got our first football yellowfin tuna in a long long time.  There’s some spots of tuna that keep popping up around Cerralvo Island with some fish up to 100-pound reported by commercial fishermen.

The bad news is that we only got about a dozen footballs all week that went 12-20 pounds.  That’s it.  There are so many bonito around that you catch about 20 bonito to get one tuna…if at all.  I mean, it’s alot of fun and alot of action.  But, if you’re looking for some good ahi meat to take home, it’s alot of energy.   Still, it’s nice to have the tuna around!

The other downside is that if you spend the better part of your day chasing tuna, you won’t get much else.  So, the counts have not been real good for our Tailhunter Las Arenas fleet.   When they DO chase other species, there’s dorado around and the pangas will get 2-8 fish hooked up per day and the counts differ.  It all depends if the guys went after the tuna or not.

So, what alot of our guys are doing is getting their dorado and ice chests filled by fishing La Paz, then specifically going for tuna with our other Tailhunter Fleet at Las Arenas.  Seems to work out OK.

Last minute update:  Five wahoo taken on two pangas late Sunday up to 50 pounds!

HURRICANE UPDATES

We’re up an running.  Airports are open.  Flights are in.  The Los Cabos Airport officially opened months earlier than anticipated on Oct. 3rd and welcomed their first flights on United and Alaska on Oct. 8th with mariachi bands and water cannon salutes!  Other airlines are coming online.  La Paz and Loreto Airports have been open for several weeks.   Still doing some cleanup in the streets and to some businesses and homes, but the heavy work is mostly done and most things are running like normal.  Most visitors would never even know anything happened!  Come fishing!

 That’s our story!

FRUSTRATING FISHING BUT SOME NICE HIGHLIGHTS ON A TOUGH WEEK

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of April 27-May 4, 2014

It was somewhat of a frustrating week of fishing.  It started well.  It ended fairly well.  But in between, it was a bit rugged.

We had some promise going into the week but then strong winds and some really high tidal surges and waves seemed to have not only stirred up the waters, but also chased away the bits of live bait spots we had as well as brought up cooler waters and some rougher waves.  Not exactly the best conditions or situations for fishing.  Just being honest.

There were some highlights, however.  What we lacked in quantity and action we tended to make up for it in some nice quality fishing.  There were some good-sized rooster fish taken that ran 30-60 pounds and some larger ones broken off.  All of them released.

There were also some larger dorado in the area as well that helped out as well.  Some of the pangas got limits or near limits some days.  Not everyone, but several boats a day would do well.  It just depended on the the spot as well as the luck and skill of the anglers.

But, truth be told, there were days this week when boats came back with nothing…either because of simple bad luck or losing fish or choosing to chase a fish that was “hot”one day, but cooled off the next.   I especially felt badly for a pair of flyfishing anglers we had that fished hard and hardcore like troopers for the entire week and pretty much came up goose-egged.  It wasn’t a good week for flyfishing…and tough for the conventional fishing as well.  Despite some nice catches, it might have been one of the more frustrating weeks of the young season.

The highlight would had to have been the wahoo that went on the bite again.  Every day, we took a few and lost even more to the speedy toothy fish.  But, for many of our anglers, it was their first wahoo with some decent 20-35 pound ‘hoos brought into the boat.  South end of Cerralvo Island was our hot spot trolling Rapala and YoZuri lures.

 That’s our story!

SPRINGTIME CONDITIONS BRING VARIETY!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of March 23-30, 2014

Except for a few breezy days, it was more like late spring/ early summer style fishing this past week.  Air temps were in the low to mid-80’s and actually pretty pleasant.  Water temperatures which have risen unseasonably high have been in the mid-70’s to low 80’s.

The resulting effect was a decent mix of fish.  Some cool water fish.  Some warm water fish.  But, overall a nice variety.

The cooler water fish mostly taken inshore and in shallow areas included some nice yellowtail up to 25 pounds.  Nothing widespread, but a smattering here and there.  As well, we took some nice slugger pargo, cabrilla and sierra around both islands.  Some good fish were lost to the rocks…not unusual when big fish are holding close to structure like reefs and rocks!

Warm water fish…well, once again…dorado!  We’ve been getting them on and off for about 2 months now. Way early for a normal season, but once again the warm water species were found anywhere from the islands, to the shallows around the beaches, near the buoys and free-swimming in the channel.  No great numbers, but every day a few dorado here and there.  Mixed with the other species, it made for some interesting boxes of fish coming back in our pangas each day.

We’re going to keep an eye on these water temperatures!  Those temperatures will dictate what we’ll be catching.

THANKS EVERYONE!  ANOTHER ONE FOR THE BOOKS!

RoldansWEB

We’re finally headed home to La Paz.  After almost 3 months on the road encompassing almost 15,000 miles of driving…9 states…10  hunting and fishing shows including:  Sacramento, Denver, Puyallup (Seattle), Portland, Yakima, Phoenix, Boise, Long Beach, Salt Lake City and this past week in San Diego.  Whew!!!

And what a grand time we had…almost 20 years doing this now and every year it just gets better and better!  Jill and I want to thank all our amigos who came to see us at the shows and everyone during the 3 months for their friendship, support, encouragement and smiles.  And to all our friends for making us feel welcome and all the hospitality on the road…all the gifts…food…drinks…invitations…Tailhunter tribe members are the best!

Now, let’s head home to La Paz and get some fish! God bless you all!

That’s our story!

RAul marlin tags 11-13

Another good week for billfish surprisingly for so late in the season. Raul Chollet with Captain Armando got his first marlin. We got quite a few billfish and almost all of them were released. This one was taken just off Punta Perico.

Rick Amy dorado tags 11-13

From Wyoming, Rick and Amy Kasper always do well fishing with us. They got into a nice school of dorado just off Las Arenas. Dorado are getting more scarce as the waters cool, but so far, we’re still finding roaming schools.

Benny Salgado is often seen playing lead guitar with the Tailhunter Restaurant house band on Friday nights. He went fishing with us for the first time ever on the water and first time fishing. His first fish ever…a striped marlin!

Raul Chollet has another dorado for the panga. Most of the dorado this week were the 8-20 pound class fish, but they’re hungry and voracious!

Many thanks to our long-time amigo, Bill Boyce (orange shirt) who brought his great camera crew down this week to fish with us and film for his popular TV show “IGFA Saltwater Adventures.” They got some great footage and had some fun with our folks!

BLUE WATER SPECIES STILL HOLDING!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Nov 17-24, 2013

It wasn’t a spectacular week of fishing, but given the time of the year, it wasn’t a bad week either and there were some very good catches. It’s just that seasons are changing and water temperatures are dropping taking with it more and more of the warm water species.

But, still, we had OK numbers of dorado. Limits were harder to come by, but everyone still got a few dorado between 8 and 20 pounds. There were also some decent surprising roosters around near the Las Arenas lighthouse with most fish between 10 an 30 pounds. We also still have decent numbers of billfish around as well. Every day we got at least 1 or more hook-ups on sailfish or marlin with most fish either breaking off or getting released. All of these species are somewhat unusual to still be biting this late in the season so these catches are treats. More likely, we should be fishing for more inshore species like cabrilla, sierra, jack crevalle and pargo.

I imagine, as the waters continue to cool and winds get stronger, we’ll be fishing more and more for these inshore species.

One really nice spark this week were the appearance of wahoo. Mid-week, we got into a nice jag with several of our boats hooking up to the speedsters and a few getting boats. All of these were on the south side of Cerralvo Island and we had not taken any wahoo in about 2 week so this was a nice surprise to get into these trophies!

Our biggest day of the week happened to be when TV show host and IGFA Rep, Bill Boyce brought his film crew down to shoot for his TV show “IGFA Saltwater Adventures.” I was pretty nervous. Fishing had not been real great. It was also a full moon and windy plus being “off-season” wasn’t the best time to be fishing!

Still, Bill and his crew went out with our Tailhunter Las Arenas fleet and brought the cameras. Between our 3 pangas out, we got some great footage! 6 marlin caught and released. Some great action on dorado plus some rooster fish caught in Muertos Bay!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report from Tailhunter International for Week of October 6-13, 2013

marlin mike small tags 10-13

Mike Liberski from Washington is fishing with us this whole week. One thing on his bucket list was a marlin. It didn’t take long. His first day out with Captain Pancho, he scored this blue marlin estimated at 160-180 pounds. Good one Mike…he got it up for a quick photo and released the fish to swim away strongly! Bravo! Quite a few billfish in the area the last few weeks! Check out the flat waters. Only about a mile outside of Bahia de Los Muertos!

dorado underwater tags 10-13

I think I will frame this photo taken underwater of a nice bull dorado by amigo, Gary Wagner who owns the famous Giggling Marlin Bar in Cabo San Lucas and has his place in Bahia de Los Muertos as well.

Kathy and Craig Sanford dorado tags 10-13

Celebrating their 29th anniversary, Craig and Kathy Sanford came up for the week to visit us and spent several days on the water tangling with some great dorado like these two bulls taken north of La Paz. Craig and Kathy are from the Phoenix AZ area and are standing on the beach at Balandra.

roosterfish tags john hughes 10-13

We have been trying for years to get John Hughes and his dad Carl down to visit us from their great operation at Aurora Fishing Charters in Seward, Alaska! They finally made it down and got into our great dorado bite but Carl also got his first marlin and John got his first roosterfish with Captain Armando and our Tailhunter Las Arenas fleet. Check out Aurora Charters at: http://www.auroracharters.com/ for some great halibut and salmon fishing in Seward, Alaska!

Virgin Redwine 10-13 dorado small flyrod tags

Big smiles from Virgil Redwine from Moses Lake, WA. Virgil was here celebrating his anniversary with his wife and took a number of fine dorado on the flyrod like this one just outside of Bahia de Los Muertos!

Wagner dorado tags 10-13

Beautiful posed shot of a nice bull dorado caught by our amigo, Gary Wagner, who takes time off from his famous Giggling Marlin bar in Cabo to come fishing up at his place in Bahia de Los Suenos (Bahia de Los Muertos)

baine dupee tags small 10-13

Big smiles from first-time visitor from Portland OR, Baine Dupee and another colorful dorado he caught fishing with our Tailhunter La Paz fleet around Espirito Santo Island. Mom, Tanya Dupee looks on. Baine also got his first striped marlin on this trip!

ERic JOhnson marlin tags small 10-13-proc

It was a great week for billfish with lots of hookups and fish either lost and most released. Eric Johnson from Washington got his first billfish with Captain Adolfo driving the boat and he battled this one with Cerralvo Island in sight. Fishing 3 days, they released most of their fish but were not able to release this one and donated much of the meat.

dominguez tags pargo 10-13

“Uncle Bobby” Dominguez from Hacienda Heights CA really wanted his photo in this week’s fishing report. Well…you made it Bob! He shows off a really nice trophy barred pargo he pulled off the reef while fishing from Bahia de Los Muertos. Nice work, Bob!

Mike Anderson dorado tags 10-13 small

All the way from Kodiak Island, Alaska, Mike Anderson came down for a quick two-day run with us and got into some nice dorado like this one while fishing with our La Paz fleet.

dorado Jeremy Lord tags 10-13 small

Can’t beat the colors of a dorado! Jeremy Lord just put this one in the boat off Espirito Santo Island. Jeremy is from the Sacramento CA area and was on his first visit with us at Tailhunter in La Paz.

whaleshark tags 10-13

John Hughes took this photo of a “small” 25-foot whaleshark that came up and swam with their panga for awhile. It’s that time of the year when whalesharks visit our waters and John got this great shot, but kicked himself for not jumping in the water to swim with the big fish. The gentle animals are true sharks, but eat plankton and small krill and grow up to 50 feet and are a big attraction in La Paz for scuba divers and snorkelers.

devon dorado tags 100-13

Captain Rogelio helps out Devon Boatman from Lake Elsinore CA with another nice bull taken while fishing around Punta Mejia.

DORADO STILL BENDING RODS BUT POSSIBLE STORM COMING THIS WEEK!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Oct 6-13, 2013

As I write this, we’re watching our computers screens wondering if the storm cell to the south of us is going to head our way and turn into a tropical storm and bring with it, some winds and rain our way.  We’ve dodged quite a few bullets this year and our last few storms have veered away at the 11th hour.  We just have to wait and see.  I’m not worried so much about a little rain or some thunder showers.  Those come and go or you can alway drive away or around cloudbursts.  Fishing is rarely affected.

However, wind is all encompassing and can make for chop as well as turn-over-the-water.  Plus, it can cool waters and, if they are northern winds make it pretty much too uncomfortable to be fishing.  So, we’ll just have to wait and see.  We’ve got alot of fishermen here this week and we surely hate to disappoint!

Anyway…

It’s been a good week of fishing.  The full-turbo dorado bite we’ve had for two weeks died a bit, but everyone was still getting dorado.  For numbers, our Las Arenas fleet plugged easy limits of fish between 8 and 20 pounds.  For larger quality fish, our La Paz fleet got fewer fish but the fish were larger between 15 and 30 pounds.  Bottom line…if you wanted dorado, they were there every day for the taking.  Our light tackle and flyfishermen especially had a good time with this grade of fish.

However, there were some surprising other species as well.

There’s giant squid in the water that we’re catching for bait but those are also drawing marlin and sailfish into the area and we’re hooking a nice number of billfish…and releasing most…but they’re alot of fun.  Our biggest of the week might be 180-pound-blue that was released.  These fish are also feeding on the smaller dorado and bonito as well.

But, in addition to the billfish, we hit some jags of rooster fish as well.  These were fish in the 15-40 pound class and were in the Las Arenas area near the lighthouse and in Bahia de los Muertos.  Normally, it’s pretty late in the year to be encountering roosters, but a great catch for many of our anglers who weren’t expecting the exotic fish!  All roosters were released.

Additionally, pargo and cabrilla showed up on the counts leading me to believe that waters are starting to cool.   For sure, we’re getting more and more north winds indicative of coming winter conditions.  Normally, we don’t see this happening until November but looks like we’re in the transition period.

That’s our story!

dorado in sand tags Ken campbell 10-13

This is my new favorite photo! I think I am going to frame it. After the hundreds of fishing photos I have published this is one of the most creative. Ken Campbell wanted to show everyone the big dorado he LOST! Anyone can have a photo of the fish they caught but how many have a photo of the the fish they lost? Bravo, Ken! (He did catch plenty of other dorado, but this would have been the biggest and was a heartbreaker!)

marlin hosmer small nagy tags 10-13-proc

Our amigos, Rick Hosmer (tail) and John Nagy (head) always do well. It’s Rick’s 4th trip this year and John’s 3rd trip this year and they always fish with Captain Mundo. They stuck this hefty blue marlin with a live bait estimated at about 200 pounds. Attempts to release the fish were not successful. They are posing with the fish at Bahia de Los Muertos near Las Arenas. Lots of billfish this week!

roosterfish nathan sibayan 10-13 small tags

Yes! There are still roosters around! Steve Sibayan helps his son, Nathan, with this nice rooster caught near the Las Arenas lighthouse on live bait. The fish was released and the Sibayan family was on their first trip to fish with Tailhunter in La Paz (see photos below)

Our Tailhunter family! Son Jarrett Pfost and his girlfriend Diana Pleasants from San Diego spent the week with us and did well with the dorado bite at Las Arenas.

Dorado don busse tags 10-13

“Dancing Don” Busse is one of our favorite amigos who visits us each year. Don fished several day this week and poses with one of his larger fish from his first day fishing from Las Arenas. The nice dorado swallowed a chunk of chopped squid.

marlin tags 10-13 small

Devon Boatman was another new amigo who gave us a try this week for the first time. He spent an hour-and-a-half on this striped marlin…his first. He got it to the boat and figured it was about 100 pounds and could easily heft it into the panga for a photo. NOT! It was heavier than he thought! So…a quick photo and a nice strong release for the marlin! Well-done!!! Devon is from Lake Elsinore CA .

I love family photos! The Sibayan family with some of their dorado catch after a great day on the water. Nathan, William and mom Victoria on the beach!

From the mountains near Sacramento, John Kennedy, fished with us pretty much the whole week and had great outtings on the big dorado bite that’s been going on about 2 weeks now.

Al Basye Ehab tags dorado pargo 10-13

Al Basye and his future son-in-law-to-be Ehab Abufaire from Orange Co. CA fished 3 days this past week and got a bit of variety in the catch with dorado plus the nice barred pargo.

sailfish gary bryson tags small 10-13

Gary Bryson from northern California gets a hand with his first-ever billfish taken near Espirito Santo Island north of La Paz by Kevin Hale, son Eric Bryson and Jeremy Lord. The fish was hooked on a live bait and could not be released. It was a great day. In addition to the sail, they also got a box of dorado; caught and released a hammerhead shark. They also saw a huge whaleshark and jumped into the water to swim with it. Quite a day!

Dorothy and Terry Humphrey dorado tags small 10-13

From Aloha, Oregon (love that name!), Dorothy and Terry Humphreys were visiting us for the first time and came to spend Dorothy’s birthday in La Paz. Although they live in Oregon, she had not fished in 30 years even though she loved fishing. So, they came to visit! And they did great on dorado!

Angela Olivero is another of our first-timers this week. He’s from Murrietta CA and with Captain Pancho running the panga poses with his largest dorado of the day. That’s Bahia de los Muertos in the background.

Great shot. Fishing with our Tailhunter La Paz fleet, three dorado grab air from Eric Bryson, Kevin Hale and Jeremy Todd while on the beach in Balandra Bay after a day of fishing.

Calimari Fleet tags 10-13

Amigo, John Kennedy, took this great photo of the fishermen mixed up with the commercial fishermen at dawn’s first light all fishing for giant squid near Las Arenas. This is how we start the day catching these big squid for bait. The dorado have been eating these like crazy!

Jeremy Frieze holds up one of the big squid that we catch in the morning and use for bait. It’s actually alot of fun and harder than most people think to pull one of these huge cephalopods up from the deep.

DORADO STILL THE MAIN PLAYERS AS SCHOOLIES SWARM THE PANGAS!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Sept. 28 to Oct. 6, 2013

I’m not sure how to explain this, but fishing “slowed down” this week…compared to last week!  But it wasn’t bad!

Last week, our Tailhunter anglers were catching triple and quadruple limits of dorado as fast as they could bait hooks so the bar had been set pretty high!  This week started like that but, as the week went on it “tapered” to only single and double limits.  So, there was some disappointment.  But hey…still catching and releasing 10 or 15 dorado a day is NOT a bad day on the water!

Not sure what happened.  The waters didn’t change . The temperatures didn’t change.  I didn’t see any noticeable differences in the winds or other variables, but no doubt the fishing dialed-down just a notch or two.  Most noticeably, this was for fishing out’ve La Paz where the pangas had to work a little harder to find and catch fish.

For Las Arenas, for the most part, limits were still the rule rather than the exception with some fast action most times and for most pangas although there were some blips here and there.

Still, it’s alot of fun, especially on light tackle to get into a voracious school of 10-15 pound dorado.  Guys would tell me that they could see bigger bulls on the periphery of the marauding schools, but the younger bucks would zoom in so fast that the bigger fish had no chance at the hooks!  But, we still did manange to get a few 20-40 pound fish every day.

For Las Arenas, there is still no live bait to be had.  But, that has not slowed the bite. What we’re doing is jumping into the squid holes in the morning and hauling up some of those giant squid.  Using cut up squid for bait works just fine.  The dorado don’t slow down at all.

For La Paz, we’re still getting some mackerel and caballitos for bait since we go out earlier than some of the other fleets.  So, we hook a few dozen of them.  Then we go buy some sardines from the bait guys.  After that, go jig up some bonito to use for cut-bait.  That gives us 2–4 different varieties of bait to offer once we’re at the fishing grounds.

For other species, the biggest comment is more for what we are NOT catching.  Tuna just have not come to the party this year.  That’s what most guys are asking since this is traditionally tuna time.  We’re getting some wahoo and every day a few billfish are hooked and released most of the time.  Many of the billfish are hooked while anglers are in the middle of a dorado frenzy and the marlin and sailfish show up to join the party by eating the chummed squid as well as feeding on the dorado themselves!

Roosterfish are still along the beaches although no one much has been fishing for them since they’re not good eating and the dorado are so rampant.  We’re also seeing a few more pargo and sierra as the waters are now starting to cool down.

That’s our story!

tags tim zimmer 12-12 dorado

This looks like a poster! The colors are incredible on this bull dorado that Tim Zimmer caught with Captain Jorge out of Bahia de Los Muertos with us. It was another week of surprising big dorado up to 40 pounds…the kind we normally get during warmer weather! We also had quite a variety of other fish as well.

cristina ainsworth sierra 12-12 tags

Big fat sierra! We’ve had some of the biggest sierra I’ve seen in a long time these past few weeks. Just check out this big sierra that Christine Ainsworth caught fishing with our Tailhunter Las Arenas fleet. The fish are schooling in the shallows right now and can be great on light tackle!

verda tags pompano 12-12

Just to show off some of the variety these past few week, we’ve gotten pargo, cabrilla, rainbow runners, jack crevalle, roosterfish, sierra and great eating fish like Verda Boyd’s Africa pompano she’s got on the gaff here with Captain Jorge.

mike ainsworth tags rooster 12-12

Posed like a professional! That’s exactly what Mike Ainsworth does! He’s a fishing guide up in Washington and knew exactly how to hold this roosterfish he got on the flyrod just outside of Bahia de Los Muertos that can be seen just behind him in the background only yards from the beach. We’re still getting roosters in varying sizes like school-sized fish all the way up to 70 and 80 pounders!

There's a reason the local name for jack crevalle is "Toro" which means "Bull" in Spanish. These jack crevalle are among the gamest fighters in our waters. Tim shows off one jack he got while fishing 3 days with us.

SAILFISH – BIG DORADO – ROOSTERFISH SURPRISE WINTER ANGLERS!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Dec. 11-16, 201

We had some late week rains which are very unusual for this time of year when winds are usually what we have to worry about, but we had a bit of both.  As the week went on, the winds got stronger then the winds died and then the wind died and we got some crazy rains!  Nothing really strong, but enough to fall fairly steadily and get everything wet on and off for about 2 days!

However, earlier in the week, we really had some excellent fishing.  Once again the dorado were truly a surprise.  Hard to believe it’s winter when 20-40 pound dorado are ripping up the anglers and putting some big smiles on faces.  But, that’s the kind of fishing we were getting.  Limits or near limits of dorado with the larger fish and bigger schools east of Cerralvo Island.  On top of it, even-to-some-degree when the weather was a bit sour, we had sailfish and smaller striped marlin in the count!

Closer to shore, smaller schoolie-sized dorado, but add in some solid sierra fishing plus pargo, cabrilla, a smattering of jack crevalle and pompano and bonito and it makes for some great unexpected action! Even bigger surprise, we got hammered by some really unexpected catches of roosterfish…and not just the smaller school-size fish either.  We got some 60-80 pound bruisers just off Punta Perico and the lighthouse as well as some of the roosters on the flyrod.

Hope your holidays are going well!

That’s our story!

Rod Brown is our good amigo from Wrangell, AK. He’s already made two trips to see us this year and was one of the guys who was able to post up a nice wahoo in what has been the best wahoo week in two years! Captain Jorge helps with the photo.

Captain Gerardo lends a hand to Jeanette and “Big Jimmy” Lee Gilman from Utah. First timers to fish with us, they won the trip by guessing how many bobbers were in the ice chest photo below when they came to the ISE Sportsmans show in Salt Lake City, UT last March! Talk about beginner’s luck…they got 5 nice dorado, a wahoo AND….two roosterfish that went 40-50 pounds! And outstanding day for anyone!

Lee Gillman in the photo above attended the Salt Lake City International Sportsmens Show in March and correctly guessed that there were 1934 bobbers in the marine ice chest above and won a 5 day/ 4 nights/ 2 days fishing trip with Tailhunter here in La Paz.

Hank Gonzalez and Captain Lorenzo flank happy angler, Robert “Blue” Nuss with his personal best bull dorado he caught out of Bahia de Los Muertos.

It was a pretty good week for sailfish! Chris Pallemaerts from Washington gets his buddy Josh to give him a hand with this big sailfish he caught fishing our Tailhunter La Paz fleet north of the city. They attempted to release the fish but were unable to revive it after it swallowed the hook. They donated the fish.

Our amigo, Charlie Gibson from Northern California, is here on his 2nd trip to La Paz this year and shows off one of his dorado he caught fishing with our Tailhunter La Paz fleet north of the city.

Talk about a great day! Joe Hussin barely had a line in the water off Punta Perrico when he got his first wahoo! Then, in the next hour, he caught 2 more of the nice ‘hoo’s! Three wahoo in an hour! Best of the year so far.

We had quite a few of our amigos who were on their 2nd trip of the year to La Paz to visit us including Leif Dover who lives in Atlanta GA and “commutes” to Hong Kong, China for work! Leif crossed “sailfish” off his bucket list with his first ever sailfish fishing with Captain Pancho off Las Arenas. The fish was released.

It’s always great when the kids get their first fish! Check out the two dorado that Julian Valdez caught out of Bahia de Los Muertos! Felicidades, amigo!

Bob Solee from the Portland, Oregon area was actually on his 3rd trip of the year with us and always does well. Bob holds up one of his La Paz dorado. Bob make some incredible custom fishing rods! Check them out at http://www.bandbcustomrods.com/

Curt Desjardins from Temecula CA was fishing with us for the first time and pulled this beautiful bull dorado while fishing with our Tailhunter Las Arenas fleet.

FISHING ATTEMPTS TO REBOUND AFTER LAST WEEK’S STORMS WITH WAHOO DORADO BILLFISH!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Sept 30 to Oct. 7, 2012

A week after we were hit with a hurricane, an earthquake and and floods from a tropical storm, things got back a little more to normal this past week.  Temperatures and skies could not have been prettier.  Definitely spectacular postcard-pretty weather.  However, the waters are taking a little longer to get back on track as runoff from the big rains cooled some areas of water or made it greener or murkier.

But, as the week went on it steadily got better although fishing still did not get up to where it usually is this time of year.   The biggest danger was just fishing 1 days.  You COULD be the one or two boats that didn’t do well while the rest of the fleet was hooking fish.  Every day, about 80 percent of the boats did OK to good and a few just couldn’t get on the bite.  So, if you only fished one day, you did stand the chance of getting only a fish or two.

On the other hand, fortunately, most of our clients are here fishing 2, 3, 4 or more days and by the end of the trip, even with a slow day or two, they left with an ice chest of fillets and good Kodak moments!

There was no shortage of variety that’s for sure.  I think things are changing.  Of course, we had the usual dorado bite where probably 70 percent of this week’s bite were dorado.  Fish ranged in the 10-15 pound class, but there were larger fish up to 40 pounds well.  The problem was that there was no rhyme or reason as to where the fish would bite or why they would bite one day and not the next.  One “hot” captain would just smoke the fish and the next day that same captain could not get a single biter!   Or vise versa.  A captain on a slump would suddenly be the king of the beach the next day.

But, in addition to the dorado, we also saw our best week of wahoo.  Get this.  Some of the wahoo were smaller than big sierra!  I have NEVER seen some wahoo so small.  They were like miniature wahoo.  I’ had never seen 5 pound wahoo!  So, don’t get too excited.  But there were also some 20-30 pounders as well.  Again, like before, some of our pangas would hit the wahoo off Punta Perico and then the next day everyone would go to that spot and they would get skunked.  It was hit or miss, but given we’ve not had any wahoo for 2 seasons, we got more wahoo this week than in the past 2 years combined.

There were also some other good biters as well. Roosterfish are still prowling the shallows near the beaches and we got and released roosters in the 5-50 pound class all on live bait.  Larger baits produced larger fish!  There were also pargo, sierra, jack crevalle, lots of bonito and a stray tuna or two.

Additionally, it was a good week for sailfish and marlin with several being hooked each day and most released.

 That’s our story!

First-time visitors from Washington and new amigos, Barbette Davidson and Robert Brooks got into a sweet dorado bite out’ve Bahia de Los Muertos early in the week with some good quality fish. The bite at Las Arenas has definitely improved since earlier in the season.

Oh the agony! Ed does his best to hold up one of his dorado  caught on his panga while  our popular driver, Carlos looks on. Nice rack of fish to take home standing there at the beach at Bahia de Los Muertos!

This was just crazy! Normally, flat and blue and pretty-as-a-postcard, two of our captains struggle to get the panga back on the trailer and out of the water. Note the chop and muddy waters from rains! Southern winds whipped the normallly calm seas into a froth on one of the few days of the season when it was just crazy to try to get fish. The sun was out but the seas were not being kind. This was the remnant of Tropical Storm Kristy that was blowing several hundred miles away.

La Paz has gotten more rain in the past 3 weeks than the last 3 years! Almost every afternoon, for about 10-30 minutes we get localized rain or thundershowers. Sometimes just breezers and sometimes gully-washers! This is the view outstide Tailhunter Restaurant. Ten minutes later the sun was out blazing again!

For those of you who have fished with us over all the years, you know how dry our desert looks and what the drive to Las Arenas looks like! Well, after 3 weeks of rain…TAKE A LOOK! Grass is growing. Flowers are blooming. Butterflies are all overthe place. The WILD  SKINNY COWS ARE GETTING FAT! Everything is green! The mountains are sprouting jungles!  It’s like the earth has turned into a giant Chia Pet!

Our amigo, Al Yu, wasn’t trying to catch a billfish. He had a sardine out on light tackle trying to catch a dorado when this sailfish bit on 30 pound test! Fight on! They were going to release the fish, but it had swallowed the hook. Still a nice catch, Al! We did get quite a few hook ups on sails this week, all were either released or got off!

Jeanine Stenzel and her husband Roy are technically our La Paz neighbors since they completed their house in La Paz and they come to visit us every few weeks always trying to get in a day of fishing! Our amiga poses with one of several she hooked fishing with our Las Arenas fleet from Bahia de Los Muertos.

Had to post up this one of our daughter, Jessie, with another dorado and the big smile. Check out the skies. Pretty much how it looks every afternoon just before the rains come. Fortunately, most of the times everyone is already in and able to enjoy the cool downpour over a cold cerveza. Jess was fishing near Espirito Santo Island when she hooked this one!

Fred Li had a few banner days of fishing with us and really got into the dorado like this one taken north of La Paz!

WORKING A LITTLE HARDER FOR OUR FISH THIS PAST WEEK BUT DORADO AND SOME TUNA KEEP IT BENT!

La Paz-Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Sept. 9-16, 2012

It was hard to get too excited this week.  We have so many great weeks of fishing I’d have to say this week was OK.  There was some good fishing.  There was some great fishing.  And then, there were some bad days of fishing.   That about sums it up.

No way to put a finger on it.  We continued to have tropical conditions with variable weather that dropped mega sunshine on us one minute with tons of humidity followed by growing clouds in the afternoon and often heavy localized thundershowers.  (By “localized” I mean it would rain like the 2nd coming of Noah in one spots but ¼ mile away, it would be dry as toast!).  The weather might be a part of it.  We have not had a hurricane but instead have had about 3 weeks of mini-showers.  Very welcome to the area since we’ve not had pretty much any rain for about 3 years.  However, in the last 3 weeks, we’ve had more cumulative rain than in the past 3 years combined.  By most opinions, we’ll take little afternoon thundershowers over a hurricane any day!

But, it also meant variable fishing.  I mean, everyone got fish.  If you fished more than 1 days, you were gonna get fish.  Most of it was going to be dorado.  But one day, you could be absolute aces and the hero on the beach and the next day, with no changes at all, you might end up with barely one fish!   5 pangas would fish an area and 3 would get limited early and be back on the beach.  One would get 3 fish.  The last panga fishing exactly in the same spot would get one little dorado!  The next day it might be all reversed.

The highlight of the week was the tuna that blew up at Las Arenas.  In fact, it was an epic bite off Cerralvo Island that some guys described “the bite of a lifetime!”  “All we could want.”  “Just stupid good fishing!”  About mid-week the football tuna…8-12 pounders…just came boiling and biting about anything that got thrown in the water!  Just wild.  We all thought that it was finally the beginning of “tuna season.”

Well…

Not so fast.  Just like in the past when the tuna sort of peeked out…the tuna disappeared the next day in rough choppy waters spurred by high winds that made it literally crazy to even try to get to the tuna grounds.  (See the photo above of what Muertos Bay looked like!)  And that was that.  As the week went on, a few tuna popped up, but nothing to get too excited about.

So, that’s the bite.  Dorado.  Some tuna.  A few sailfish.  Oh…and a wahoo.  Dorado are still the big biters so I figure we’ll let these waters calm down from the tropical storms and they’ll come foaming back.

I did want to share one story from Barbette Davidson who fished with us this week with Rob Brooks (See the top photo with all the dorado).  She tells us that on the plane ride back to Washington Rob fell asleep.

“Robert fell asleep on the plane and was slouching forward a little bit and all of a sudden he pulled back hard against the seat with his head and lifted his arms.  This woke him up and I asked him what he was doing and he said he thought he had a “fish on”.  LOL he was dreaming of catching fish!”

That’s our story!
