La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay Fishing Report from Tailhunter Sportfishing for Week of Nov. 8-15, 2015

will dolinar stacy jorge tags blue marlin

Although fishing was tough, Will Dolinar from Rock Springs, WY, says, “It’s snowing back in Wyoming!” He roughed it with us this week and while out with Captain Jorge, his wife Stacey hooked this blue marlin. After a few minutes, she handed it off to him and he fought it for almost 2 hours. The fish could not be released and they donated most of the meat to the pueblo.

Despite bouncy rough water, Captain Jorge got Stacey Dolinar on this feisty roosterfish just at the mouth of Bahia de los Muertos. The fish was released.

Marlin bob 11-15 tags

It seemed this week that if you were fishing in all this wind, you either got little tiny pargo and cabrilla or you got a BIG fish like a rooster, marlin, sails or wahoo…and precious few of those. However, on their last day, Bob Donohue from Washington fishing with Captain Pancho, Bob put the wood to this striper. After the quick photo, Bob was able to release the fish! Note that chop in the back!

HUGE WINDS RIP FISHING

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay Fishing Report for Week of Nov. 8-15, 2015

Not much to say this week except the winds were bad and the fishing was worse.  If you were in the city it was gorgeous sunny 85 all week.  But being on the water was probably someplace not so good.

We had maybe the strongest winds of the year, short of there being an actual storm.  Winds up to 20 mph with gusts to 25 blew most of the week along with huge tidal surges that not only swamped low-lying areas, but the winds generated almost surf-able waves in La Paz Bay that were strong enough the smash against the La Paz malecon (waterfront) and throw spray on the sidewalk and cars!  Much of the bay looked like white froth.  Normally, our calm little bay looks like a lake and generally, we don’t see these kinds of winds until maybe late December.  But, I think El Nino just has everything all outta whack.

In terms of fishing, for the 2nd straight week, we did not send any fishermen out of La Paz.  Even had it not been howling winds, the waters have been turned over.  There’s very little bait and what few fish that are around have been way over on the other side of the bay almost 90 minutes ride away.

So, we’ve fished all of our folks with our Tailhunter Las Arenas fleet out’ve Muertos.  At least the bay is south facing and somewhat guarded against the north winds.  But, even then, there’s only so much protection.  Once outside, it was choppy and rough.

Bait is already an issue, but when the winds blow, it’s even worse trying to find it or, in the areas close to shore where we net it, the huge waves scatter the small baits or make it impossible to get close to the rocks.  However, some days the guys were able to scrabble up some mackerel, caballitos or other baitfish.  But not much.

So, that surely impacted the fishing.

Being that it’s already off-season, the upside is that there are very few fishermen in town compared to a few weeks ago.  It’s just too bad the winds came up early this year…a month too soon.  Normally, we’re still whacking fish right now.  But, the downside is that we still have some fishermen visiting us and there wasn’t much to write home about.  The amigos we had out this past week really put in a valiant effort and kept the smiles on despite the lack of fish and rough water.  High-fives to all of them…they hung in there!

There were some marlin and sails hooked.  But there was not much “in-between” in terms of roosters or dorado, bonito or other species.  One wahoo hooked and lost.  The rest were just some small pargo, cabrilla and trigger fish.  Oh…a couple of 50 pound roosterfish that were a nice change-up, but can’t east roosterfish and all releasd.   That was pretty much it.  As I write this, winds are calming just a bit, but are slated to start up again the middle of next week and blowing Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday…again!  I’m really tired of El Nino.  Go away already.  Not a great way to wind down the season the last few weeks.

That’s our story!

FISHING and WEATHER TAKING ON A CHILL

La Paz – Las Arenas/Muertos Bay Fishing Report for Week of Nov. 1-8, 2015

Seasons have definitely changed, not just for us in La Paz, but from what we’re hearing in other areas of S. Baja as well.  Northern winds seem to have moved in and are blowing pretty consistently which is indicative of cooler air and water temperatures.  It makes for rougher fishing and fewer warm-water species.  Winter conditions aren’t far behind.  If the winds continue, we’ll be fishing mostly inshore species before too long.  It’s still a pretty time to be in Baja.  It’s great vacation temperatures with daytime temps comfortably in the mid-80’s and nighttime temperature pleasantly in the mid-60’s.

La Paz

We haven’t really sent out too many of our fishermen and boats out’ve La Paz now for almost 2 weeks.  It’s been tough fishing. Northern winds have made it choppy and rough. Even tho’ it might look calm in the bay, outside it can look like a washing machine.   Bait has also become a problem.  Some days, no bait is available until late in the morning.  Even moreso, the fish we’ve been finding have been far on the other side of La Paz Bay near San Juan de la Costa. That’s a long long run after already a long run looking for bait.  San Juan de la Costa is over an hour run to get there.  Then…when we have fished the area, we’re finding only 1-3 little dorado or some sierra.

More or less, unless something dramatic happens, I think we’re done fishing La Paz side and Espirito Santo Island for the rest of the season.

Las Arenas/ Bahia de Los Muertos

This is where we’ve been doing most of our fishing recently.  Having our boats launching out’ve Bahia de Los Muertos they are at least more protected from the winds blowing from the north since it’s a south-facing bay.  However, it has still been bumpy out there some days once the winds start up.

The winds create another aspect.  The winds make it hard to get bait.  If waves are battering the bait areas, the bait scatters or makes it hard for the pangeros to get in close to throw their nets.   Without bait, it makes it harder to fish or we revert to fishing for lures…or trolling…which isn’t much fun anyway if it’s rough and you’re in a panga.

The other side of the coin is that winds force us to fish closer to shore for pargo, cabrilla, jacks, and sierra.  All good fish, but surely not the glamour pelagic species folks come for.

That being said, we were still getting some decent rooster fish the last week or so that ran 30-60 pounds (all released).  There were also a few sailfish and marlin hooked and released.  Rapalas near Cerralvo Island and not far off Punta Perrico produced a few wahoo as well as some really early season yellowtail in the 20-pound class.

New Road Now Open

Well, it finally happened. We’ve been waiting for them to open the new road from Los Cabos Airport.  It’s been completed for several weeks, but required Mexican President Nieto to do the official ribbon-cutting ceremony.  He was in town last week and the deed was done!

The new toll road from the Los Cabos Airport bypasses the slower tourist corridor between San Jose and Cabo San Lucas.  For those anglers and tourist traveling to La Paz, the 100 mile trip has been taking 3 to 3 1/2 hours.  The new road should cut down the trip to approximately 1 hour 40 minutes!  Cost is about 70 pesos, I understand…about 6 dollars.

That’s our story!

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay Fishing Report from Tailhunter Sportfishing for Week of Oct. 26-Nov. 1, 2015

GRAND SLAM 10-15

Not just the best catch of the week…maybe one of the best of the season! When someone catches three or more kinds of sportfish in a day, we call it a GRAND SLAM! Richard and Sue Marksberry from Herndon, Virginia had never fished in the ocean before. They had never fished in Mexico. They got 5 tuna, then caught a sailfish; then caught a wahoo! On top of that, they got pargo, cabrilla, bonito, jack crevalle and roosterfish. They let most of their fish go or donated fish to the pueblo. Nicely done! They set the bar pretty high for future trips!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Nice way to end the trip for Kyle Herrera from Kaysville UT and his dad Channing. The got into the tuna early in the week then topped things off their last day with a nice wahoo as they were coming back to the beach with the panga!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Tom Mullican, from Idaho, is one of our great Tailhunter amigos. He spent the last two weeks here struggling through the difficult bite, winds, hurricane waves and lack of bait and never gave up and kept smiling. During that tough bite, he and Captain Archangel suddenly found themselves with THREE sailfish hooked up at the SAME TIME!!! He said it was wild. All on lighter tackle. One got unbuttoned right next to the boat. Another was released and swam strongly. The last one could not be revived which is shown here on the beach. Tom donated the meat! Once-in-a-life-fishing! Good job, Tom!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Early in the week when the tuna cooperated, Dave Codding with Captain Armando and a nice rack of yellowfin tuna that Dave caught with wife, Gail. They donated all the meat to families in San Pedro. They also left donations of money for our FANLAP scholarship program.

BArbara choate dorado 10-15 tags

Despite tough fishing all week, Barbara Choate, was gonna keep fishing and outfish her husband and the rest of the guys. She’s got the best laugh! Well, she came through on the last day with Captain Jorge and caught what might be the largest dorado of the season. We’ve caught alot of dorado this year, but a fish over 10 pounds has been rare. It’s been a strange year. But this one might be in the 20-25 pound category!

Dave Codding black marlin 10-15 tags

Dave Codding from Idaho and Captain Armando with a nice marlin. Dave had caught other billfish, but had never done it like this on light tackle and it battered him for almost 2 hours. The fish could not be released and he donated the meat to folks in the pueblo.

Pargo record Matt Deichsel 10-15

A beast! Matt Deichsel shot this huge barred pargo while freediving and it might be a new spearfishing world record. They brought the monster to Tailhunters where we have a certified IGFA scale and it topped out at 38.5 pounds almost 2 pounds heavier than the current world record. The papers have been submitted and hopefully qualifies!

Two of our newest amigos! Tammy and Donnie Van Ness from Texas came looking for a trophy rooster that evaded them, but they did get some of the yellowfin tuna.

ANGLERS PUSH THROUGH TOUGHEST FISHING WEEK OF THE SEASON

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Oct. 26-Nov. 1, 2015

Without mincing words, this was by far the toughest week for fishing of the entire year.  Honestly, a struggle for the anglers and the captains.  The way we’re set up, we have two fleets.  For those of you who have fished with us, you know how we’re set up.

Our Tailhunter La Paz fleet fishes north out’ve the bay and then around Espirito Santo Island

Our other fleet is our Tailhunter Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay Fleet that fishes around Cerralvo Island.

This time of year, both sides are usually producing some fantastic fishing with everything from billfish to wahoo and tuna to dorado and others in between.  This is prime time right now.  On the rare occasion that one side is not doing well (either because of wind, weather, bait, etc.) , the other side is always productive and we easily move our clients to the other fleet so they can continue to get bit.   It’s worked like that for the 20 years we’ve been here.

I don’t know what happened this week, but the ocean turned into a desert for fishing on both sides.  Poor fishing doesn’t even begin to describe things.  The week started out promising with tuna and billfish for our Las Arenas fleet and then dorado for our La Paz fleet.  About Tuesday, the whole place just sort of shut down.  We had trouble buying a bite.  It was ridiculous.  What happened?

LAS ARENAS / MUERTOS BAY

For the last 3 weeks or so, football-sized yellowfin tuna between 8 and 20 pounds have been a real nice treat in that area just south of Muertos Bay.  As well, sailfish and marlin have been moving through the areas and providing a great bonus bite. Wahoo were also in the area.  So were rooster fish!  We were getting 3-10 tuna on the average per panga per day.   That was the bread-and-butter-fish.

Then, it just shut off.  Nothing. Nada.  Boats were catching nothing or coming back with a cabrilla and a trigger fish!

Several factors seem to have been involved.

1.  No bait.  Our lifeblood is having live bait.  The sardines and other baitfish just disappeared or became nearly impossible to find.   No bait.  No bites!  After a few days of futility, word among the captains was that commercial boats and pangas from “down south” had swooped in during the night with small-mesh nets and taken all the bait.  Lovely.

2.  Residual wind and waves from Hurricane Patricia didn’t help.  Patricia late last week that hit the Puerto Vallarta area was the strongest hurricane ever recorded in the western hemisphere.  It had winds over 200 miles and hour and rains are still being felt up in Texas.  We’re 500 miles away, but lots of water got pushed up our way and created big rolling swells that also pummeled the shallow areas where the sardines are often found.  Plus, the rollers got people seasick that normally don’t get seasick.   I think I had more people seasick this week than the entire year put together.  The winds from the south added chop to the area and then seasonal winds from the north that start up this time of year anyway, turned the waters into a swirl.

3.  Full moon.  Huge full moon.  I usually don’t put much stock in the full-moon superstition.  You either fish or you don’t.  Some of our best bites have taken place during the full moon.  However, combined with everything else mentioned above, it was a sorry combination.  I saw big tidal surges and low ebbs along with strong currents that made the water look like a flowing river at times.

LA PAZ

Our go-to area. All year long if nothing else was biting, we could always fish with our Tailhunter La Paz Fleet and 9 out’ve 10 times, the dorado would charge and fill the coolers and put smiles back on everyone’s faces.  The dorado weren’t big, but they were feisty and fun.

This week, in combination with the things mentioned above, the bait was hard to find and our boats would spend most of the morning look for bait.  Then, the fish were all the way over the other side of the bay near San Juan de La Costa…about 20 miles away!  So, chase bait all morning then a long boat ride to the other side.

Then…the pangas were coming back with only 1 or 2 little dorado.  Not even worth the gas.  Even my captains were telling me not to fish the area!  Waste of time and gas.

Add to that rough seas and you have a perfect combination of bad things making for bad fishing.

Hopefully, things settle down by the time you’re reading this.

MORE BIG THANK YOU’S!

We we head toward the end of the season, just another big shout-out to all of our Tailhunter Tribal Family that brought down hundreds and hundreds of pounds of school supplies, clothes, shoes, dry goods, hygiene items, toys and sports items for our needy kids in schools and also our battered women’s shelter.  As well, to those of you who donated money to our FANLAP scholarship program to help keep a child in school, you all rock.  Thanks for making a difference everyone!

WP_20151026_001-1

Cannot find nicer folks and have more fun with this group for amigos from Idaho! Barbara and Randy Choate; Claire Ames; Gail and Dave Codding and Tom Ames. Thanks for the big hearts and smiles and thanks for spending your vacation with us!

We are blessed and grateful more than you know!

That’s our story!

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay Fishing Report from Tailhunter International for Week of Oct. 18-25, 2015

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

From Kaysville UT, Channing Herrera and son, Kyle, started their week of fishing with a one-hour frenzy of yellowfin tuna.

pargo patrick puhlmann Leonardo Tapia Nick Jones tags 10-15

Potential WORLD RECORD FISH on our certfiied IGFA scale…a 38.5 pound barred pargo (pargo mulatto). Matthew Deichsel shot the fish while freediving. He went back to the hotel to take a shower. His friends, Patrick Puhlmann with Pistoleros Del Mar here in La Paz, Nick Jones and Leo Tapia thought the fish might be a record so while Matt was in the shower, they ran to our place and we set up the certified scale! The old record on the speargun was just over 37 pounds. This one went 38.5 and is going to be submitted!

Fishing brings old friends and co-workers together! Tom Mullican from Idaho got together with his friend, John, all the way from New Jersey. Been friends for 40 years and they knocked out some great tuna out of Bahia de Los Muertos. Check out the big sierra as well. Normally, a cold water fish. The sierra is the 2nd fish from the right on the rack.

Tuna Rios tags 10-15

Raphael Rios from Texas and his amigos brothers  from Louisiana, Lindon “Lenny” Leishman and Allen “needlefish” Leishman,  flank Captain Jorge from our Tailhunter Las Arenas fleet and a good day of tuna fishing.

carl zilinski tags rooster 10-15

Our new good amigo, Carl Zilinski, came all the way down from Canada to get himself a roosterfish. I told him that there weren’t many around this late in the year, but he buckled down and went for it. He got a little 8-pounder the first day. Mission accomplished! However, his last day, he hit the home run with 2 big 50-pound roosters! All released.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Jack Eichhorn from Ahwanee CA lends a hand to amigo, Zach Milano, who hooked this sailfish and had it on for a 20 minute battle south of Cerralvo Island. The fish was not able to be released.

GRATEFULLY NO HURRICANE – LAS ARENAS TUNA BITE HIGHLIGHTS THE WEEK

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay Fishing Report for Week of Oct. 18-25, 2015

The 2015 fishing season is winding down for us here in La Paz.  Still plenty of fish to catch, but the end is pretty much like so much of the season…UNPREDICTABLE fishing and climate.  Weather is really nice now.  High 80’s and humidity dropping with great sunshine and waters still warm and light breezes.  About that breeze…

Thanks to all of you who wrote or called us to ask if we were OK with Hurricane Patricia that slammed into the Puerto Vallarta/ Manzanillo areas.  However we’re 500 miles away and were not affected by the storm which has been called the strongest hurricane on record in the western hemisphere.  Poor folks had 200 mile-an-hour-winds and lots of rain.  Thankfully, damage and injuries were much less than anticipated. As many will remember, only last year, Hurricane ODILE slammed into Southern Baja tearing La Paz, Cabo San Lucas and many areas up pretty badly.  In many ways, we’re still mending.

Fortunately, for us, Hurricane Patricia went south.

Still, it DID affect us.  Big wind and waves hit us late in the week.  I mean, big chop and big rollers unlike anything we get here!  Sea-sickness is not something we usually have to deal with here because water are so calm, but folks were taking dramamine and we had more than a few tell me they got queasy.  It was not easy fishing.  The upturned water also affected the fishing insofar as it make the waters dirty and moved the bait around which was harder to catch.  Our captains and fishermen really had to work hard for fish this week.

LAS ARENAS/ MUERTOS BAY

I think this is one of the few times this year where I can say the fishing was actually better in this area and with our fleet than with our La Paz fleet fishing north out’ve town.

Our Tailhunter Las Arenas fleet at least had the nicer football tunas to play with.  Fish in the 8-20 pound class at least put some quality fillets in the box.  It wasn’t wide open by any stretch, but the boats got 2-9 fish per day and it changed daily and from boat-to-boat often fishing right next to each other. Just came down to dumb luck sometimes with no rhyme or reason as to why one boat would get bit and others would goose-egg.  But, the fish were there and made for fun when mixed with the other species like bonito…some wahoo…as well as some decent billfish too!

LA PAZ

It was honestly a struggle this week.  La Paz fishing and our La Paz Tailhunter Fleet have been our wild card ace all year.  At least the small dorado would provide ready action and help fill the chests.  The fish were often close to shore and the bay and voracious.

This week, it was a struggle.  Bait was small and difficult to get.  The bigger body of fish was all the way on the other side of the bay near San Juan de la Costa…a pretty far run.

One of our pangas would get 6 or 7 dorado up to about 10 pounds and others would get 1, 2, 3 or even none…just lots of bonito biters.  Combined with the big winds and chop from Hurricane Patricia, it was not easy fishing.  Fortunately, that’s why we have two fleets and we had most of our folks fishing with our Las Arenas fleet so they at least had shots at tuna and wahoo.

GRACIAS!

Smiles for things they would not ordinarily be able to have for school. Simple notebook paper and pencils!

For over a year now, you, our awesome friends and fishing clients have been bringing us so many incredible donations for our Pack for a Purpose Program.  To date, there’s been over 2000 pounds of goods delivered and all gone to great use.

For those of you who don’t know, my wife Jill spearheaded the program and it basically works like this.  Folks are coming down to fish.  They bring down empty ice chests that they have to pay for anyway to bring down so they can haul fish home.  We ask that if you can, set aside a little space (doesn’t have to be much) and bring something down for some of our charities down here.  Every little thing counts.

Well, our Tailhunter Tribe has responded. Every week entire ice chests…full suitcases…boxes come in with so many fantastic things.  Every week, I post photos of some of our generous donors!

But, rarely do you folks get to see where all the good is being done.  This week, I posted up photos from the Care for Kids La Paz operation  where the most recent batch of donations went.  Donations go here as well as some impoverished schools out in the desert and also the battered women’s shelter.   We wanted you to see some of the smiles YOU all provided in a place where even a simple pencil  or toothbrushes and toothpaste can make a difference.

Also, many of our clients leave us money as well.  That money goes towards the FANLAP Scholarship program to help put kids through school. Here in Mexico, after 6th grade, education is not guaranteed and families must pay for further schooling.

Through this program, $300-40o puts a child through school providing uniforms, books, supplies, food and transportation FOR AN ENTIRE YEAR!  Thanks to you, we’ve got several elementary and highschool students who otherwise would not be going to school furthering their education.  They, in turn, must keep up their grades and are required to give back to the community and the FANLAP program doing things like tutoring other students.  http://www.lapazninos.org/our-programs/scholarship-program/how-the-scholarship-program-began/

Jill and I just wanted to say thank you!

That’s our story!

LA PAZ – LAS ARENAS/ MUERTOS BAY FISHING REPORT FROM TAILHUNTER SPORTFISHING FOR WEEK OF OCTOBER 11-18, 2015

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

First timers from Washington! Great to have Bill Bigelman and John Stendra with us and have them get into the tuna bite at Bahia de los Muertos.

Ken campbell sailfish tags 9-15

One of our favorite amigos! Firefighter Ken Campbell says La Paz is his “happy place” and he had a great week. He got his first sailfish off Cerralvo Island. They tried to revive the fish, but were unable and he donated all the meat to the pueblo. He fought the fish for 90 minutes on 20 pound test and tells us the fish was actually tangled and had lassoed itself into knots of line around it’s head. Also interesting because he was fishing deep down with weight to get away from the bonito on the surface!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I just found out that our amigo, Chuck Fiola, from Yakima WA didn’t catch these fish! His buddy, Cal Lambert from Denver caught the fish, but Cal walked away up the beach when the camera came out! This photo with Captain Gerardo is especially interesting because Chuck is holding a yellowfin tuna while Gerardo is holding a rainbow runner…related to yellowtail (cooler water fish!)

wiley randolph tags sailfish 9-15 jorge

Captain Jorge protects his hands with the boat sponge and Wiley Randolph’s first sailfish! They got it on live bait and Wiley nicely released the fish after the photo.  He got the fish in 30 minutes on a small bullito (bonito mated with a tuna).

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

John McVay comes every year to fish for a week and always does well. He’s posing with two handfuls of some of his yellowfin tuna.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

It was a good week for sailfish. Steve Manney with amigo, Dana Murray and Capitan Adolfo hold up the large sailfish. It was Steve’s first and much of the meat was donated.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Brad Baker and Jim Adair with their first tuna. Jim, upheld the tradition, and ate the heart of his first tuna. “Tasted like copper!”

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

From San Rafael CA, Kris Honkola got a personal best striper and an assist from amigo, Jeff Klassens for the photo shoot on the beach at Muertos.

wahoo claudio 9-15 tags

Yes! There are still wahoo in the water. Claudio put a shaft into this fat wahoo early in the week while freediving in the 90 degree water.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

It’s not that there aren’t dorado around. It’s just that we don’t have many photos because the dorado are so small. However, Captain Victor took a moment to pose with one of the larger bull dorado of the week.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

More of our good Washington guys with tuna…Jim Brower and Robert Larson fished 3 days with us in their yearly trip to La Paz.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Our friends Jeff Sakuda and Marianne Sugawara have been fishing with us for many years. They had some tougher fishing earlier in the week when we had rain storms, but did manage a few tuna to put in the box!

TUNA DORADO SAILFISH KEY UNPREDICTABLE FISHING

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay Fishing Report for Week of Oct 11-18, 2015

We’re about 3 or 4 weeks from the end of our primary season and I guess it’s about time I figure that I will never get a handle on what’s happening this season.  I should just give in and give up trying to predict anything other than every day is different and this is an El Nino Year.  It’s just fishing and just because something happened yesterday is no bellwether on what will happen today or tomorrow.

We had dark nights (really pretty sliver moon!) and great water conditions all week.  But the fish, well, they were as erratic and unpredictable as always.  There would be in one spot and go crazy one day.  Next day, same spot, fish all over…and they would refuse every bait or lure in the water.  Or, one boat would sit on a spot and all rods would be bent.  The boat next to it couldn’t buy a bite.  The next one over also bit.  The one next to that one, struggling.

Or, one boat catching dorado.  The next boat on a sailfish.  The next one over on a pargo or cabrilla or yellowtail.

It has been that kind of a season.  Erratic.  Unpredictable.  Great.  Crappy.  Unbelievable.  Crummy.  Pretty much anything you wanted to say.  You just go fish.  It’s surely not for lack of effort on the parts of the captains or the anglers.  They’ve been going at it hard.  It’s just been that kind of a crazy season.

LAS ARENAS/ BAHIA DE LOS MUERTOS

Again for the 2nd straight week, happy to say that the yellowfin tuna were the highlight.  Football season for the first time in 2 years kept 8-20 pound fish around the pangas and anglers having fun.

Just two problems…

First, everyone knows about it now, so the waters are getting alot more traffic.  Our boats.  East Cape boats.  La Ventana/ El Sargento boats.  Commercial boats.  Just like anywhere else in the world.  Everyone finds the honey hole sooner or later.  So, the numbers-per-rod are down.  Most boats getting 1-5 tuna per day.  Some better.  Some worse.

The 2nd issue is that there’s a ton of bonito all over the place.  It makes for great action, but after the first one or two, a big nuisance if you’re trying to get through the bonito to the tuna.  As soon as a bait hits the water, it gets slammed.  Lots of fun.  Great on light tackle, but if you’re trying to put some fillets in the box, it makes it difficult.

By the way, the sardines are really really small.  If you have #4 or #6 hooks…straight “J” style hooks to bring down (if you’re bringing your own tackle) that would be a bonus.  Flurocarbon leader is also a plus.

The other highlight was that a number of our anglers got their first billfish this week as well.  Some striped marlin hooked but also some unusually large sailfish were hooked in the same spots as the bonito/ tuna.

LA PAZ

This has been our go-to area just for action and filling the cooler because the small dorado have been everywhere all season.  The only issue is that they weren’t as cooperative this week and the schools seem to be moving further and further out as the waters start cooling.  Also, a few days there were dorado everywhere, but they just wouldn’t bite.  It was hit or miss and every day there were different results.  I’ve kinda given up thinking we’re gonna see larger fish this year.

Normally, our “small” dorado are 15-20 pounders.  This year, we rarely see anything over 10 pounds.

 MUCHAS GRACIAS!

We’ve been receiving fantastic donations for our schoolkids and the battered women’s shelter all year.  Our anglers have brought in over 1000 pounds of donations just this year.  Well, this past week we were completely overwhelmed and blown away by several hundred pounds more of much needed supplies of shoes…clothes…school supplies…hygiene items…toys…books…sporting goods.  Just unbelievable.  I regretfully, don’t have all the photos of everyone as some of the items were dropped off when we weren’t in the office.  However, please know that we appreciate all of you and all your thoughtfulness!

WP_20151014_001

Wiley Randolph and Ken Campbell with dozens of pairs of new kids and women’s shoes…school supplies…hygiene things for women…just bags and bags of things! Good shoppers!

WP_20151014_003

Year-after-year regular good guys…Don Busse, Jim Adair and Brad Baker flank Jilly behind a table full of school supplies…(and a beer?) LOL

WP_20151014_004

Mike and Dena Vonderahe with Heather and Mark Chism from Oregon had so much stuff packed into boxes we couldn’t unpack it all! It just tumbled out. Thanks folks!

WP_20151015_001

Al Jones and Victronda Sheasby are here to visit us again this year and we appreciate all their great donations of clothes and school supplies!

WP_20151015_006

Just having too much fun! Kevin Pereira and Kris Honkola from San Rafael CA got some warm clothes for the winter months (yes, it gets chilly here in Mexico) for the kids plus school supplies. I think pink is Kris’ color. Gracias, amigos!

WP_20151015_007

I think Jill wants one of the dolls that Cal Lambert and Chuck Fiola brought down with school supplies and books for the kids! Cal is from Denver and Chuck comes to us from Yakima Washington.

NEW ROAD-FINALLY?

highway

By the time you read this the new highway COULD be a reality.  Right now, in La Paz, we have no direct flights from the United States, even though, La Paz is the capital of the State of Baja Sur.  (Southern Baja).  So, pretty much everyone must fly to Cabo San Lucas followed by a 3-4 hour drive up north to La Paz.  It’s a pretty drive.  But it’s tiresome.  After an already long-day of travel, adding 3-4 hours of driving isn’t the most fun thing in the world.

However, they have completed a new highway that could cut that time IN HALF!  Yes…down to about an hour-and-forty-minutes!  The problem is, the Governor hasn’t done the official ribbon cutting ceremony! That’s the only thing holding it up!  So, they powers-that-be are saying THIS is the WEEK when it could finally be open!  We’ll keep you posted.  It will surely be great to cut down all the travel time.

That’s our story!

Archangel rooster

Captain Archangel shows off one of the nice roosterfish like the ones we got this week. We just didn’t have alot of photos to put in the report since everyone releases their roosterfish! (Which we encourage!) A good week for roosters a little earlier than normal for the year.

ROOSTERFISH –  PARGO and WHALES HIGHLIGHT WEEK

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Feb. 22-March 1, 2015

There just weren’t that many fishermen in town this week.  Most folks in town this time of year are snow-birds just trying to get away from the colder areas they live in.  Or as one visitor told me this week, “We give up.  We live on the east coast and could not stand one more snowstorm.  We went as far as we could go as long as we had sunshine.”

It was surely a good week to be in town.  Temperatures were in the 80’s although there were some afternoon clouds that dropped some quick showers up in the mountains.  Pretty pleasant overall.   And not much wind which was pretty good for fishing…if we had more fishermen!  But, it’s to be expected during the off-season when we’ve always got the potential for some strong northern winds that can bounce you off the water.

But, for the few fishermen we had, there was some decent inshore fishing.  The highlights were the pargo and rooster fish.   We don’t have alot of photos this week because…well, most of the rooster fish are released (yay), but there were some nice 10-20 pound fish.  Close in tight to Bahia de Los Muertos and south towards Boca de Alamo.

The other fish that came up nice were the pargo.  But, we don’t have alot of photos of them either this week because…well, the fish bite, but if you have ever fished for pargo, you also know how tough they can be pulling these sluggers out’ve the rocks.  Probably not a tougher fish out there and this time of year is when the big redfish come up into the shallows to spawn.   We “estimate” that the fish that were lost would’ve been in the 10-30 pound range.

Other species included bonito, sierra and cabrilla (sea bass).

WHALES

Although we didn’t have alot of fishermen, we DID have some great whale watching and that’s what alot of folks come to La Paz for this time of the year.

We’re having a spectacular year with an abundance of grey whales in Bahia Magdalena and daily trips headed out and lots of whales this year.  Normally, they’re gone by mid-March but show no signs so far, of leaving in any hurry!   It’s been a great opportunity to literally get close to the whales and touch them.

WHALE SHARKS

How about swimming with an animal the size of a school bus?

whaleshark small

Thanks to Kody and Rick Kasper for these great photos and this week’s great video of Kody underwater.

There have also been some great opportunities right in the bay to swim with the whalesharks.  The “babies” which are about 10-15 feet long are in shallow water but an incredible experience to get in the water with anywhere from one to more than a dozen whalesharks in shallow water.

YELLOWTAIL YES…BUT TUNA IN FEBRUARY?

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Feb. 1-8, 2015

After two weeks of on-again-off-again funky weather that included both wind AND rain, we finally had a week where the clouds parted a bit and we got sunshine and calmer seas.

Accordingly, I’m not surprised that we got into a few more fish and had some better conditions.  There was still some wind, but it was still better than it had been!

We had quite a variety and I guess the biggest news was the surprise jag of tuna found at the north end of Cerralvo Island.  Commercial fishermen had been trickling reports to us of fast moving tuna now and then, often moving too fast to get on them, but we finally stuck one.  James “Hawk” Davis our amigo, stuck a fish we estimate at perhaps 60 pounds dragging a Rapala.  Now, normally, we don’t see tuna until maybe late spring or early summer and it’s too soon to call this a “tuna bite.”  But, it’s darned exciting to see a good-grade ahi hit the deck!  We’ll keep you posted.

Hawk got his fish on 40 pound test and his xRap30 was the mackerel pattern.  According to Hawk, there’s yellowtail around in the shallow spots, but that’s the problem.  Dragging deep running lures like the XRap30 means losing alot of expensive Rapalas in the rocks!

As for other species, there’s some slugger yellowtail also around the island with most fish running 20-30 pounds.  A nice grade of hefty fish that can pull like crazy.   This is the right time for more of them to show up.

In addition, talk about a buffet of species…we also have been getting into pargo…both the big mullet snapper (pargo liso) as well as the barred pargo mulatto that have the pretty orange and green bars on them.  Fish have been 5-20 pounds which might not sound like much until you try putting the wood to one of these guys and try to pull him outta the rocks.

We also found schools of dorado…some smaller school-sized rooster fish…bonito and cabrilla for a nice mix of fish.

Conditions look like they’re going to hold so hopefully, we’ll get some better fishing reports coming up!

TAILHUNTER WHALE WATCHING TRIPS IN FULL SWING!

ANOTHER CRAZY WINDY AND RAINY WEEK!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Jan. 25 – Feb. 1, 2015

Not a whole lot to report this past week.  We had some crazy days of rain and drizzle and when it wasn’t wet, it was windy either on the front or backside of the storm cells that came through.  It didn’t rain hard, but definitely, not great to be outside trying to get a tan.   We normally have windy days during this time of year and it’s unusual for us to get rain, but nothing is “for sure” when it comes to weather.

The good side is that we don’t have alot of anglers this time of year and those that do, usually are not hardcore and wanting to fish every day.  So, with flexible schedules we can ask them to wait until perhaps another day later in the week is better.  That being said, we got some OK inshore action on sierra, bonito and jack crevalle.  Not much in the way of bait but have been using baby bonito when we can get them.

We have been keeping an eye on what the commercial guys are doing since they are working any chance they can get out, unlike sports fishing.  These guys gotta make a living.  They tell me there’s yellowtail at the island and there’s also sardines and mackerel for bait.

The forecast for the coming week is looking pretty good.  Nothing but sunshine mostly.  Back to normal!  It’s gonna be 75 to 80 degrees in the daytime and mid-50’s at night!

Whales are in full “come see us” mode out at Bahia Magdalena and we’re running daily whale watching trips right now.

POST HOLIDAY BLUES

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Jan. 11-18, 2015

There weren’t that many fishermen around this week, either because there simply weren’t that many around or those that wanted to fish were kept off the water by pesky northern winds.  But, this is typical of winter fishing in our area and frankly, it’s pretty common few weeks after Christmas not to have even many tourists in town.  You could almost call La Paz “sleepy.”  Even the locals are keeping it low key and under the radar, perhaps still recovering from the holidays.  Stores, streets and restaurants are almost empty sometimes!

We did get a few folks out on the water with air temps in the mid-70’s and a bit choppy.  Sierra were biting along the drop-off points where shallow water slopes into deeper areas like near the Las Arenas lighthouse and also in the channel areas where current move between rocky spot.  As well, the sloping areas also produced jack crevalle and some pompano…both related plus their more popular cousin the rooster fish with some smaller school-sized fish that might have gone about 15 pounds.

Bonito were prevailant not to far from shore either and a few stray free-swimming dorado were hooked as well.

WHALES HAVE SHOWN UP EARLY IN BAHIA MAGDALENA!

Normally, from about late January to late March, the grey whales take up residence at Bahia Magdalena where they spawn, breed and give birth.  In these shallow warm waters, this is the end of the largest migration of mammals on earth as they come down from the Bering Sea near Alaska.   We’ve started running daily trips to the Bay to spend a day getting close to these amazing gentle animals and it’s a great life-time experience for the whole family.  If ou’re interested,  you can get more information by calling us at Tailhunter at 626-638-3383 or e-mailing us directly at riplipboy@tailhunter-international.com for an even faster response!

So now…we head to our 3rd show on the “road tour.”  First was Sacramento.  Now, we just finished Denver.  This week we set up for the Washington  Sportsmans Expo at the Puyallup Fairgrounds near Seattle, Washington!  This is always a super-fun show and it’s going to be nice to be in the green trees again in a beautiful state and seeing all our amigos.  The show runs from Wednesday to Sunday.  Please come visit us!  We’re in our booth every day.  For more information and to buy tickets, click this link: http://www.thesportshows.com/shows/washington/

GREAT VARIETY OF INSHORE SPECIES TO BRING IN NEW YEAR

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Dec. 28, 2014 to Jan. 4, 2015

Happy New Year Everyone!  Hope the new year is off to a good start for you!

We had another windy week here in La Paz, but about Wednesday it started to calm down and suddenly everyone wanted to go fishing!   We put out more pangas in one day than we had in the two previous weeks combined!  I guess everyone was waiting for those pesky north winds to settle down.

Anyway, we sure got quite a variety of fish.  Nothing big, but for so many of our fishermen who are really in town for some sunshine and not necessarily hardcore anglers, there was some great action and fish to bring back for dinner.  There’s alot of out-of-towners in La Paz right now for the holidays who are just trying to squeeze in an activity like snorkeling or diving or a day of fishing here-and-there.

So, for those who went out, we had cabrilla (sea bass) around 2-5 pounds.  Smaller snapper and pargo of about the same size.  Some really nice-sized sierra and some great bonito to bend the rods.  Additionally, we had some surprise fish as well with some rooster fish caught and released that were going about 10-15 pounds; a few school-sized dorado; and even had a wahoo take down a lure, but regretfully come unbuckled.  Oh well…

Still, great action and lots of fun without having to go out too far from shore or get bounced around out there in rough water.  As the weekend came up the winds ramped up a bit and so did the fishing, but as you’re probably reading this, the winds have likely petered out and the seas are flat again.  It’s going to be like this throughout the winter months which is pretty typical.  It’s definitely chillier.  I know many people will laugh, but our guys were complaining about the “cold water” which is now at 72 degrees!

WE’RE ON THE ROAD AGAIN!
