MEXICAN MINUTE LA PAZ FISHING REPORT for WEEK OF SEPT. 24-Oct. 1, 2017

Week at a Glance

Weather – Perfect. Seasons are changing. Feeling more like fall. Less humidity. Daytime mid-90’s and mostly sunny. Nights low 80’s and clear with a seabreeze.

Water – surface 85 degrees and blue

Fishing – good as it’s ever been in a long time for tuna, dorado and roosterfish. Bait a little tough this past week in La Paz, but the dorado ate everything thrown at them anyway.

Catching – Lots of limits. We’re selling extra ice chests like women’s shoes at a Nordstrom sale. Can’t keep ice chests in stock as anglers realize how much fish they’re taking home!

THE BIG PICTURE FISHING REPORT

Here second visit here this year! Claire Swift from San Clemente, CA knows how to fish and got into the tuna this trip just outside Bahia Suenos.

Not a bad day and a good start to the fishing week for Ben Lindell from Le Grande, Oregon. Ben has been down to visit us twice this year and shows a rack of tuna and dorado.

Great colors and flat waters! Montana in the house! Marty Martin has one of several tuna to kick off the start of his fishing trip.

Wow! Let the dog out! A big dog-tooth snapper/ pargo perro for Dave Lindell fishing with Captain Victor.

Wade Gomes our Arizona amigo had himself quite a week of fishing and poses with a pair of his dorado he caught fishing north of La Paz with our Tailhunter Fleet.

Lisa Hicks always does well when she visits La Paz and was with her favorite Captain Victor from the Tailhunter Fleet when she caught and released this nice rooster fish not far from the Arenas lighthouse She said she was laughing because it was bigger than the rooster her husband had just caught and he had been giving her a bad time until she hooked up. Both fish were released.

Roger Young was with Captain Chito fishing north near Espirito Santo Island and was trolling a little plastic feather to catch bonito to use for dorado bait when this big blue marlin came up instead. They were not able to release the fish and most of the meat was donated. Roger is from Missouri

A pretty good week for roosterfish with another catch-and-release opportunity for Stan Andre from Northern California with Captain Pancho. Great colors.

Hard to have more fun than these two! From Wyoming, Sid Kendall and Bruce Diechmueller who didn’t let the fact that his arm is in a sling stop him from three fun days of fishing. Their first time visiting us.

Big smile and a big roosterfish for is birthday! Captain Gerardo gives Norm Clayton a hand with a big rooster. He’s visited us a number of times, but never got a rooster until his birthday this week! The fish was released.

There’s alot of great colors going on here for our friend, Jeff Swift, from San Clemente CA who hung this yellowfin tuna south of Muertos Bay with a sardine.

Our Missouri friends, Marilyn and Roger Young, with some dorado to add to their fish haul that included marlin and tuna.

Louis Abels from Colorado fished with his friends and Captain Armando to take several nice limits of tuna over two days.

A very unusual catch for Brad McBride from Arizona because we normally don’t get pompano until spring time when the waters are cooler which tells me may be our waters are chilling out a bit. The pompano are great eating.

John Mussel made a last minute trip to squeeze in two quick days of fishing and was rewarded with a nice load that included dorado like this bull taken near Espirito Santo Island.

Good friend, Roy Stenzel, who lives in San Diego, but has a house in La Paz fished with his friends and Captain Armando for some tuna, dorado and surgeonfish.

Love this photo of Captain Boli with our good friend, Katie Olson, from Bishop CA who visits us every year. They caught these fish just outside of La Paz Bay.

Here’s a quick video showing you just how close the sardine schools are at Bahia de los Muertos. they’re right at the launch ramp no the beach!

He’s been with us many times over the years, but came to celebrate his retirement from the Sacramento Fire Department, Tim Nishimura brought son Kenny for a week and went home with a full load of tuna and dorado.

It almost looks like Wade Gomes is fishing somewhere on the Colorado River perhaps Lake Mead not from from where he lives in Arizona, because the waters are so calm and the rock look like the river gorge, but he caught two of these nice rooster fish in a row near the rocks and released both. The other one was bigger!

More tuna? Yes! Shawn Kirk from Colorado and Marilyn Young from Missouri add 4 more tuna to several ice chests of fillets the took home after almost a solid week of great fishing.

First timers with us from Utah, Bob Jolley and Al and Jay Curtis with some of their tuna from the first day of fishing out’ve Muertos Bay.

It’s amazing he kept his shirt so white! Stan Andre had a good week on the tuna including those two that make this week’s photos gallery.

Terry Hawk put the wood to this gorgeous roosterfish just off the beach outside of Muertos Bay with Captain Pancho. The fish was released strong.

FISH BEND RODS – MOST SOLID WEEK OF SEASON!

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay/ Suenos Bay Report for Week of Sept. 24-Oct. 1, 2017

We probably had one of the best and most consistent bites of the season this past week. With the exception of a bump here and there where they had an off-day, overall the best weather and the best fishing in a long time. Flat calm blue waters mostly with surface temps around 85 degrees and air temperatures a balmy 95 with humidity dropping as we pull away from summer and head into fall.

TAILHUNTER LA PAZ FLEET

Bait was harder to find this week for some reason. It’s been like that since the last weather pattern hit us two weeks ago. That’s been strange since bait has not been an issue all season, but suddenly, it’s scarce.

That being said, there was no problem usually finding limits of dorado scattered all over north of the city from San Juan de la Costa to Espirito Santo Island to the north of Cerralvo, the Charro Bank and Punta Gorda.

Using chopped squid, limited live bait, dead bonito and other baits, dorado sometimes ran hot and heavy with our anglers telling us they released dozens of dorado keeping only a handful of the larger fish and having a ball with non-stop action. The biggest issue was sometimes running into too many little guys or trying to get through the voracious little ones to get to the larger bulls on the perimeter. Still, lots of fun.

Seeing more and more billfish too especially feeding on the smaller dorado!

TAILHUNTER LAS ARENAS/ MUERTOS BAY FLEET

Sometimes fast and furious as the tuna bite continues to rage. Some boats do better than others, but generally speaking overall between 10-25 pound tuna; a handful of dorado; lots of bonito; throw in some jack crevalle, cargo and cabrilla and there’s an incredible amount of action to be had. Some anglers are happily getting really beat up!

We had one group only fish a few hours…get a load of fish… then run back in time to play a round of golf and still be done early!

For the last 3 weeks, it’s been the best tuna bite in years. The key is the sardines and right now, they’re balled up right there at the launch ramp in Muertos Bay. The proximity of the bait has brought lots of the sport fish right into the bay including the tuna, dorado, big roosterfish, jacks and others.

Mike and Annette Crandall celebrating their honeymoon brought down all kinds of hygiene items for the Women’s Shelter.

Last week, Don Vegter and Chelsea Roos from Torrance CA brought down enough gear for an entire team of little soccer players that included balls and uniforms!

MEXICAN MINUTE VIDEO FISHING REPORT FOR WEEK OF SEPT. 17-24, 2017

WEEK AT A GLANCE

Weather – Fortunately, Tropical Storm Norma veered out to sea at the last minute. Great sunny weather all week, but some strong winds late in the week. Mid-90’s to mid-70’s.

Water – Blue and warm. Windy areas less clear, but 84 degree surface temps.

Fishing – OK for dorado on the La Paz side, but really good tuna biters on the Las Arenas side. Blue marlin surprised us this week.

Catching – Pretty good. The size of the fish 10-30 pounds is ideal for most folks so once they get the hang of it not many fish lost. Biggest problem might be anglers too tired from battling some of these tuna!

THE BIG PICTURE REPORT

The “right kind” for Dr. Art. Flippin from Colorado who put another nice yellowfin tuna in the panga with our Tailhunter Las Arenas fleet. The fish was caught just at the mouth of Bahia de Los Muertos which you can see n the background.

Ben Kirk caught alot of fish this week, but none larger than the big blue marlin he hung while fishing with our Tailhunter La Paz fleet around Espirito Santo Island at the Charro Bank. They were not able to release the fish. Ben also caught a load of tuna and dorado during the week and is from Colorado.

Our amigos from Lynden , Washington, Fred and Lisa Cruz had a banner week of tuna fishing with us.

Like fishing in a lake! This is our Captain Adolfo with our amiga, Kate McElroy fishing with us for the first time. With yellowfin tuna in hand, check out the flat waters and proximity to the beach for this bluewater fish! Kate is from Oregon.

We love having our long-time, amiga, Katie Olson, come to visit us. She loves fishing with our Captain Boli and our La Paz fleet and shows off some of her dorado ready to get cleaned and packed up! She now lives up in Bishop CA with husband, John.

Last day of fishing at the end of the day, Fred Cruz from Washington finally got the big roosterfish he was chasing while fishing with Captain Gerardo. After the photos, the big fish was released.

One of the best eating fish we have, the barred pargo (pargo mulatto) is not only colorful, but a tough fighter in the rocks but Esteban was able to yank this guy up!

More good Colorado, amigos! Connie and Art Petz with Captain Armando and a batch of yellowfin tuna and a trigger fish. They got 8 tuna in the box.

Just to show you some variety, Ben and Shawn Kirk got a limit of tuna, then topped it with some dorado and a big barred pargo with Captain Jorge.

Flat waters and schooling dorado are perfect to throw the flyrod and Austin Herron took this feisty bull on a 9wt and a Deceiver pattern at the mouth of Bahia de los Muertos.

By the time this photos was taken, Oregon amigo, Frank McElroy had been catching tuna all week and having a blast in the flat waters close to shore at Punta Perrico.

Our Northern Cal visitor for the first time, Kelly Hufford was spearfishing and shows off a barred pargo and parrotfish.

Usually, we catch these great eating pompano in the sprintime, but Fred Cruz added this to a big batch of tuna to top things off.

If you look carefully at this colorful shot of Kate and Frank McElroy holding some of their tuna and dorado, you can see how close we are to the launch ramp at Bahia de los Muertos. As the week progressed, the fish schools moved right into the bay.

TUNA ROLL BACK AFTER “STORM” – BLUE MARLIN ROLL IN!

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay/ Suenos Bay fishing report for Week of Sept. 17-24, 2017

We were a little nervous about how the fishing was going to be this week after the “scare” that Tropical Storm Norma gave us to start the week. To re-cap, Norma had us right in the crosshairs for several days as it approached the Baja Peninsula, and given the devastation that Tropical Storm Natalia did earlier in the month, there was a lot of anxiety.

Fishing had really been great, but with Norma approaching and early winds increasing, the La Paz Port Captain shut down the port and hence all fishing and water activities were prohibited for several days. No one could go out and the winds kept increasing and started to churn things up.

Then, the storm just veered off after hitting us with just some strong winds. Not even any rain. Norma just turned left and headed out to sea of which we were obviously very grateful. But we had been off for three days stuck on land and we didn’t know if the fish would still be there or if the winds had changed the water and ergo the fishing!

Tailhunter La Paz Fleet

When we finally got back on the water, the dorado hadn’t moved! Thankfully, still out there north of the city. It wasn’t great fishing because I think the fish did indeed get their habitats a little stirred up, for example some of the sargasso weeds had been broken up, where the fish hang out, but more-or-less, if you found the spot, the dorado were there and willing to bite. They varied in size between 5 and 15 pounds with a few larger and some days and pangas differed from day-to-day, but overall, not bad fishing at all. One boat would do pretty good and a panga right next to it would have trouble hooking it. Stuff like that.

The biggest issue was that the winds seem to have driven off much of the live bait which was difficult to come by for the good part of the week. There’s obviously a direct correlation between the bait and the fishing so it might take a bit longer for the live bait school to get it together.

The nicest surprise was the fact that we got an incredible number of blue marlin hook-ups! After a season in which we’ve had the poorest billfish result in many years, we had more marlin hookups in one wee than we’ve had all year! There wasn’t a day this week when I think we didn’t have at least one big billfish hooked with most of them going 150-300 pounds. And most of them were un-intentional bites! Guys would be fishing for dorado and hook one up or dragging small lures to catch bonito for bait and hook a big blue! We haven’t seen a whole lot of small stripers or sails all year, but this is definitely turning into a blue marlin kind of year!

TAILHUNTER LAS ARENAS/ MUERTOS BAY FLEET

After the storm sort of pass through, we let our Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay Area sit and rest for awhile because this is where the winds hit hardest and waters were turned over quite a bit.

It started a little sticky but no doubt the tuna that were there before the storm were still there. It got a little better every day until it was pretty much up to full speed throttle. Football 10 pounders up to 25 pound yellowfin seemed to be in a nice line from the lighthouse at Punta Arenas then south through Muertos Bay and south again to Boca de Alamo. About a 3 mile stretch of fish. Best of all, the fish were literally 100-200 yards from the beach.

Later in the week, the sardine schools moved right into Muertos Bay and so did the tuna schools and we were catching both tuna and dorado as well as rooster fish right within sight of the boat ramp!

Our pangas were limiting early then chasing other species. On the days when there were fewer limits it might have been a direct correlation to the fact that larger fish were hitting that day and more fish lost. Overall, just some really nice fishing!

Too much fun whenever Dan and Lisa Hicks visit us and this time had all kinds of shoes and supplies and feminine hygiene products! You rock!

MEXICAN MINUTE VIDEO FISHING REPORT FOR WEEK OF OCT. 10-17, 2017

WEEK AT A GLANCE

Weather – It was great until a little “rain in the forecast” suddenly turned into “Hurricane Norma” that had us all scrambling.

Water – It was good. I’m more interested in seeing what wind and rain will do to it this week.

Fishing – For the past 3 weeks, the best tuna fishing in several seasons. Dorado strong. Roosters still around. Until the storm.

Catching – Limits were the rule rather than the exception. Everyone going home with coolers

Forecast – Norma petered out and moved off, but still expecting some crazy wind this week that could make it tough on fishing and some rain showers and scattered thundershowers too. The La Paz port captain is very cautious. We’ve already been shut down for several days under the “threat” of a storm even though not a single drop has fallen. He might just open the port but then shut it down again and we can’t go out. Vamos a ver!

THE BIG PICTURE FISHING REPORT for WEEK of Sept. 10-17, 2017

A good morning of work! A fat load of tuna and dorado to start the fishing trip for our first-time amigos, Stephanie and Louie Torres celebrating retirement! These folks were a hoot all week!

Whoa! Big big roostefish for Chad Gasser from Utah while fishing with Captain Victor just of the sandy point at Las Arenas. Chad’s first after a bg week of tuna and dorado. The fish was released.

Fishing with our La Paz fleet and popular Captain Boli, Lorna Gasser added to the catch with another young bull dorado!

Bryant and Mindy Buttars already had a big load of tuna and dorado from the week so their last day, they went out with Captain Armando to see how many different species they could catch. It was a successful day with jack crevalle, snapper, dorado, triggerfish, cabrilla and pargo…all on light spinning tackle too!

A good bit of mahi-mahi fillets to cut up for our good friend, John Terbu and Captain Armando fishing with our Tailhunter Las Arenas Fleet.

Dick Gasser is a funny guy! He had us cracking up all week but did himself good with nice tuna like this one to take back to Utah!

His first roosterfish, Tim Schlander, picked up this hefty gallo just off the beach at Muertos Bay. He was able to release the fish too!

The man behind the mask is Rafael Rios sharing the day with his wife Ivette and Captain Jorge posing with just a few of their yellowfin. In 4 days, he took alot of fish back to Texas.

First day start for Fred and Lisa Cruz as they pose with some of their tuna just before the storm warnings descended on us! Hopefully, we can get them out a few more times this week!

Captain Victor got Jonene Gasser onto a pretty pez gallo in the blue water just outside the sandy shore-break by the Las Arenas lighthouse. The fish was released.

You can see how close to shore the tuna are and the boats bunched up together on the spot catching yellowfin like this double from Jesse Miller and Bob Benjamin.

We had alot of Texas amigos visit us the last week! Mica Lara from Corpus Christi puts another tuna in the boat . That’s a heck of a gaff in her hand too!

Another load of tuna headed to the fillet board for Captain Moncho with Cam Davidson and Ed Breuning visiting us for the first time.

Canadian amiga, Natalia Beauchamin, only had one day to fish with us, but got a nice batch of dorado like this one.

It happens. And it happened again, but fortunately, not as bad as Lidia 3 weeks ago.

STORM NORMA JACKS THE FISHING

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay/ Suenos Bay Fishing Report for Week of Sept. 10-17, 2017

What’s up with the weather this year? Like I saw one person say, “It’s like Mother Nature said, ‘Hold my beer I’m gonna go cause some problems!'”

Sheesh…hurricanes…fires…earthquakes…

Well, we got our 2nd one in 3 weeks…Or did we? Storm Norma…the storm that tried to be a storm.

Major buzz kill. Sitting here at my desk looking out at sunny skies and flat seas and knowing we could be out fishing today, but anticipating the appearance of Tropical Storm Norma, the port captain has shut down all fishing and diving operations. No one allowed out. It is supposed to arrive with strong winds Sunday night and possibly the beginning of rain. Or will it?

The advisories are all over the place on this one. It started as some “rain in the forecast.” It became a tropical storm. Then a hurricane. Then back to a tropical storm. Then it disappeared. Then back up to storm proportions again. Then, it petered out and as of right now, we’ll get some strong winds and some scattered rain over the next few days.

Lidia two weeks ago was only a tropical storm as well, but it caused more devastation and casualties than Hurricane Odile in 2014 which was the largest in Mexico history and hit us with rain and 180 mph winds. So, the port is closed. It’s been closed for 3 days even though it looks really calm. There are some really strong winds outside the bay and at Las Arenas.

But, the airlines didn’t fool around this time. They started offering re-funds and suggesting they would not be flying. So, alot of folks canceled their vacations. We had alot of folks here on the ground that couldn’t go fishing and others we hustled off to the airport cutting their vacations short. Madness. Jilly and I had phones and e-mails going pretty much 24/7 adjusting all the changes, cancelations and postponments of rooms, boats, flights, shuttles, diving and snorkeling!

There’s just no way to know about something like this. You hope for the best but you have to prepare for the worst for everyone’s safety and err on the side of caution . We hated to lose so many of you to cancelations, but we think you made the right call.

It’s too bad because the fishing has been super.

TAILHUNTER LAS ARENAS/ MUERTOS BAY / SUENOS BAY FLEET

The “Tuna Stomp” of 2017 continued in full swing off Muertos Bay/ Suenos Bay and Las Arenas lighthouse. Fish from 10-30 pounds were solidly biting most days and some of our boats were nailing limits by early morning and coming back or going to chase other species.

When the tuna took time off, the dorado filled in the gaps plus there’s plenty of bonito keeping the rods bent in between dorado and tuna hook ups. There were some off-moments here and there, but overall just a really consistent bite. No wahoo to speak of or billfish, but roosters between 20 and 60 pounds provided some nice diversion from the bluewater species.

TAILHUNTER LA PAZ FLEET

For our La Paz fleet…dorado…dorado…dorado. Oh and some big blue marlin too! The dorado schools were still out in force most days and it was just a matter of finding them. Once you locked in, it could be madness for 30 minutes or an hour until you fished ’til you dropped and caught limits and released a dozen or more fish! And then, here some “Mr. Blue” and the big marlin runs through the school and picks up a bait on 30 pound test and it wouldn’t last long, but the adrenaline buzz was fun!

Hopefully, the fishing returns quickly and by the time you’re reading this, we’re back on the water and full bendo!

Every week we send out several hundred pounds of your donations of kids and adult clothes, toys, school supplies, women’s hygiene items, shoes and so much more to the orphanage at Los Planes, the La Paz Women’s Shelter and the Vista Hermosa Care for Kids Center rotating through a different location each week. Again, big thanks for so many of our fishermen who find a little space to stuff some much needed treasures.

Because of the storm, I’m not able to put up photos this week. The internet and phone signals have been wonky for the last few days and I can’t get the photos off my smartphone! However, I will post them in the next report!

MEXICAN MINUTE VIDEO FISHING REPORT for WEEK of SEPT. 3-10, 2017

WEEK AT A GLANCE

Weather – Some isolated thundershowers during the week here and there. Some cloudy days but over all sunny, warm and humid. Mid-90’s in the day. Mid-80’s at night

Water – Some areas still dirty green and brown after the storm with alot of debris, but overall waters recovered faster than I have ever seen it and mostly good warm blue water.

Fishing – Tuna and dorado! Some roosterfish and marlin. Plus lots of bonito, jacks, pargo and cabrilla of you want them. Some days the dorado go nuts. Next day it’s the tuna. Dorado growing up!

Catching – A few days this week it was stupid. Everyone done with limits by 10 a.m. Some larger tuna lost.

Weather Forecast – Hopefully no more major storms, but this is the time of year when we can have isolated or occasional thundershowers ever week. They come and go fast.

THE BIG PICTURE FISHING REPORT

From San Rafael CA, Corey Hughes shows off one of the nicer dorado this week. The dorado definitely got bigger with nicer legit bulls finally showing up . Corey fished before the storm…hung with us through the storm…and fished several days after the storm as well.

A good day! From Utah, Captain Armando poses with Lorna and Rich Gasser and some of their first-day catch of tuna and dorado.

He loves to fish light tackle and using 20 pound test and a fresh-water spinning rod, Randy Edge from Salt Lake City was fishing with Captain Pancho of the Tailhunter Fleet and had his hands full with this nice bull dorado just off Punta Arenas. He also battled a few other dorado as well as tuna, bonito, pargo and cabrilla.

Jeff Pfost from Arroyo Grande, CA hung this nice yellowfin tuna on the one-day they had to squeeze in for fishing and it turned out to be a nice one also catching some great dorado. Check out how flat the water is!

Two of our funnest couples that visit us from Colorado, Frank and Diane Kunze with their favorite Captain Adolfo and two of their dorado from the first day fishing.

Right after the storm, I thought for sure, the fishing would be off, but Wayne and Todd Wilson jumped all over the dorado right off the bat shown here on the beach at Bahia de los Muertos.

First time fishing with us, Alex Noriega put the wood to this nice bull dorado plus a bunch of yellowfin tuna!

More of our Utah amigos! Chad and Jonene Gasser rocked the tuna and dorado big time on one of the days when the fish came to chew early and often!

Aaron Foxworthy hasn’t fished with us in a few years so it was great to have him back visiting from the San Francisco Bay area and had a boat all to himself when the yellowfin tuna exploded just off the beach.

What a sweet lady! This is Janie Edge showing off a bigger dorado than her husband caught! LOL! She boated this beauty on light tackle and a freshwater spinning rod too! Bravo!

The tuna got a little heftier and beefier this week and they were only a few yards from shore! Todd Wilson shows off one of his YFT’s!

Pierre Soyez from France spent 10 days light tackle fishing with Tailhunter Sportfishing in La Paz and caught over a dozen different species including tuna, dorado, jack crevalle, bonito, cabrilla and this nice rooster fish just off the rocks between the Las Arenas lighthouse and Punta Perrico. The fish was released. We got several nice roosterfish this week.

They had just one day to fish, but had a good time! Randelle and Jeff Pfost from Arroyo Grande CA with Captain Gerardo got into some nice dorado and tuna!

Our La Paz Fleet continued to jump on dorado! Dane Fulkerson from San Rafael CA hung with us through the storm and fished before and after the storm spending a few days fishing with Captain Luis of our Tailhunter La Paz Fleet.

Our ever-popular Captain Joel with our Tailhunter La Paz fleet was with Gary Whitaker and had a difficult time finding the fish until late in the day when they hit a spot and everything exploded calling in the rest of our boats to join the fray!

She’s a tiny little gal with a big smile, especially when she’s catching or eating fish! Nariza Manning from Boise, Idaho with a colorful dorado and Captain Adolfo. Check out the glassy water! That’s Muertos Bay in the background and they’re only about 100 yards from the shore.

Master Sargeant Bryant Buttars with the U.S. Airforce in Utah has been talking to us about coming down for years! As part of his birthday present, he finally came down with his wife, Mindy and got to fish with Captain Armando! Using light tackle spinning rods, they got into the tuna and dorado.

A really funny guy! This is our buddy, Larry McNeal with some of his batch of dorado. He fished several days with both of our fleets.

A good day with Captain Gerardo! This is Alex and Maria Noriega from the San Diego area who rocked it big time getting into a big bite of tuna and dorado their first day of fishing.

Kathy Terbu from Utah has been visiting us for years and always seems to find a big fish like this nice bull dorado and posing with her favorite Captain Armando.

POST-STORM FISHING RECOVERS FAST WITH TUNA AND DORADO!

La Paz- Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay Fishing Report for Week of Sept. 3-10, 2017

You would think that after a major tropical storm/ hurricane Lidia that hit us last week, combined with a massive full moon, that fishing would be more than a little off. That’s usually the case.

Although Lidia tried hard to be a Category One Hurricane, it still dropped 20 to almost 40 inches of rain on Southern Baja and caused some wides-spread devastation, especially in the Cabo San Lucas area just to the south of us. Usually, after something like that waters are turned over and dirty. Lots of junk in the water which is often cooler than normal. There’s a lot of run-off from all the dirt that comes cascading down out’ve the arroyos. Fishing can get really good, but it takes awhile to settle down.

Then, throw a huge full moon into the mix and I could almost hear the groans as folks filtered into town…happy the storm had passed and hoping for the best, but anticipating the worst. As one angler said, “I figured fishing would be crappy and we’d be spending alot of time drinking beer and sitting by the pool drowning our fishing sorrows!”

Well, that wasn’t the case!

Fishing re-bounded pretty fast! In fact, it was almost immediate. Not as crazy wide-open as before the storm, but there was no shortage of action and some high spots that were as explosive as any we’ve seen all season as both dorado and tuna helped bend rods and keep folks smiling.

TAILHUNTER LA PAZ FLEET

North of town from La Paz, the dorado kept on like the tropical storm had only been a little bump. Not only is there sargasso weed floating out there, but now there’s all kinds of floating debris lining up in the current lines holding dorado and billfish plus some tuna!

It took a little longer for the waters to clear, but some of the best dorado fishing this past week was actually in the colder-dirtier water! Go figure.

The big trick was finding the right spot. Once you found it, you could load up the rods and fish boxes with one-stop shopping and wild dorado action of fish between 5 and 20 pounds. Most of the dinks were getting tossed back because you could hit a spot and it would be a baby nursery of dinks. Or, all the firecracker fish would jump your baits and not give the big boys time to get in on the feed! But, a good problem to have with great action.

TAILHUNTER LAS ARENAS/ MUERTOS BAY FLEET

I was really worried about this area so soon after such a big storm. However, literally the first day after the storm, we got into the dorado and tuna. There were not as many or such a wild bite as before the storm, but numbers seemed to be replaced by a better quality of fish!

The dorado seemed to have gotten pumped up during the few days of the storm and came back bigger with more nice 15-25 pound bulls that were legit tackle busters. Plus, the tuna added a few pounds as well so that we had better and scrappier 10-20 pound slugs!

There were even a few days in there when the fish just went rampant, especially the tuna and the anglers were slamming limits by 9 or 10 a.m. and out searching for other species after that!

One of our anglers told me, “It was incredible. Within seconds of tossing out our first lines, we were hit. For the next hour it was double and triple hook ups of yellowfin tuna. We put 10 in the boat and probably lost and released another 10. Add in another 10 big bonito and were were dog-tired! Then, the captain said, ‘Let’s find some dorado now.’ So we caught 4 dorado and told him, we were done and let’s go back to the beach and drink a beer! That was 10:30 a.m.!”

Some days, it was more tuna. Some days more dorado. Some days it was about a 50/50 mix. Some days were better than others, but overall surprisingly steady biters!

STORM LIDIA UPDATE

That was quite a little storm we had a week ago which caused closure of flights and airports and some fairly significant damage to some areas, especially around Cabo. When you get more than 3 feet of rain in about 30 hours, that’s an issue! We all had alot of road closures, mudslides, rockslides and flood damage and at one point it was taking 6-8 hours to go the 100 miles from La Paz to the Cabo Airport.

There’s still alot of highway repair going on, but all major roads are open and any washed out areas have detours now.

MEXICAN MINUTE VIDEO FISHING REPORT for WEEK of AUG. 20-27 2017

WEEK AT A GLANCE

FISHING – Very good! Both fleets scoring fish. Best of season. Tuna at Las Arenas. Dorado for La Paz

CATCHING – Pretty good! Guys still losing alot of fish, but there were alot of fish to catch so you lose one…catch the next one!

RELEASING – All roosterfish and lots of smaller dorado released! Yay!

WEATHER – Been a great week. Daytime mid to high 90’s. Night in the low 80’s. Humidity manageable.

WATER – Blue and warm. Just like the photos!

THINGS THAT MAKE YOU GO Hmmmm : Might get some thundershowers and rain later this week. Buzz kill.

THE BIG PICTURE FISHING REPORT FOR THE WEEK

Captain Victor from the Tailhunter Fleet with Pierre Soyez from France and Arnaud Pasquet from Montreal Canada. Arnaud is the producer of the reality TV fishing show, “Chasing Monsters.” Shown here with some of their tuna and dorado caught off Las Arenas. Over 8 days of fishing the pair caught almost 20 different varieties of fish including dorado, tuna, rooster fish, cabrilla, cargo and others all on light tackle. Fun fun guys!

Daryl Boyd is a little camera shy? Buddy Larry Morse not so much! A good start to their trip with handfuls of dorado and tuna!

In 3 days, Jeff and Marianne Sakuda fishing with Captain Jorge of the Tailhunter Fleet caught numerous dorado out’ve Muertos Bay as well as tuna up to 35 pounds. They fish 2-3 times a year with Tailhunter for over 15 years. This is their 2nd trip this year. They live in Cypress CA

Two of our favorite guys that everyone knows here in La Paz, Jorge Romero took a day off from driving our shuttle vans to get out on the water and get in on the bite with Captain Moncho and coming back with a rack full of yellowfin tuna and dorado!

Derek Scannell and dad, Mike, both Orange Co. firefighters had 9 yellowfin and 3 dorado to kick off their fishing trip!

Nicholas Madrigal from S. California on his first fishing trip ever was with Captain Armando of the Tailhunter Fleet and got tuna between 10 and 40 pounds plus a load of dorado all on light tackle and with a broken finger too.

Jorge Romero and brother Esteban Romero told me they drank 3 cases of beer while fishing and lost “mucho atun” but still managed to have a great time and caught 9 football yellowfin.

Lots of you know Benny Munoz! He works at Tailhunter International and helps me process fish every afternoon. This is almost 400 pounds of tuna and dorado fillets we spent 4 hours vacuum sealing and labeling FROM JUST ONE DAY FISHING and now headed into the freezers! That doesn’t include all the fish that were lost…released…and got set aside for dinner that night at our Tailhunter Restaurant for us to cook up!

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay/ Suenos Bay Fishing Report for Week of Aug. 20-27, 2017

If I wanted, this could be the shortest report from La Paz in a long time. One sentence: “We got fish!”

I almost don’t want to get too excited because this is the kind of fishing like it should be. Like the way it used to be before El Nino. Like the way it looks in all the videos and magazines. This is what folks come for and we’ve been waiting for for almost 3 season. But, clearly, this is the best fishing we’ve seen in a long time and we can only hope it stays.

We have one pair of light tackle anglers this week fishing 9 days and in that time have caught almost 20 different species of fish! It’s been that kind of week.

Nature being fickle, who knows? For now, we’re sure enjoying the hot bite! We’re keeping an eye on the weather because this coming week there’s predictions for some thunderstorms and strong winds! Fingers crossed.

TAILHUNTER FLEET at LAS ARENAS/ MUERTOS BAY

Tuna! Tuna! Tuna! It started almost two weeks ago and has only gotten steadier. The key is finally finding some sardines for live bait. Not a lot, but surely more than we’ve seen in ages an sure enough, the tuna came up from the trench.

It’s a nice mix of fish. As small as 5-8 pounds but as large as 40-50 pounds as well. Most of our pangas were getting limits to near limits of footballs in the 10-20 pound class. Perfect for live bait fishing and having fun, especially for a lot of families and first timers that don’t have a lot of experience but great for more experience anglers that want to fish light tackle or jigs. Plus, the fish are pretty close to shore in flat blue water which just adds to a great day!

On top of it, we’ve got a nice mix of 10-25 pound dorado; some rainbow runners; rooster fish up to 60 pounds plus lots of bonito for action and throw in a few cabrilla, pargo, triggerfish and the occasional wahoo and it makes for a fun time on the water and a lot of variety.

Tailhunter La Paz Fleet

Our La Paz fleet has been rocking now for about 3 weeks. Dorado are scattered in groups across the bay and from Espirito Santo Island to Cerralvo Island. Limits or near limits of 10-30 pound fish have been common with some boats hitting the “honey hole” and catching and releasing enough fish to be back to the hotels by noon. Just good fun fishing!

As well, there’s been big blue marlin cruising in and out’ve the dorado schools also feeding on the smaller dorado which are raising a lot of interest but lots of other sealife as well to see including whales, dolphin, sea turtles and manta rays.

TAILHUNTER OUTREACH

Good guys…big hearts!…Mike Scannell, Larry Morse, Jordan Boyd, Daryl Boyd, Glen Boyd and Derek Boyd brought down several ice chest full of school supplies, clothes, backpacks, toys and clothes for our Tailhunter community outreach program.

Thanks for all our Tailhunter Tribe who brought down stuff the last two week for our Outreach Program. Several hundred pounds arrived and will be distributed. Last week’s donations went to the Care for Kids Program in one of the outlying disadvantaged areas as well as the Women’s Shelter.

MEXICAN MINUTE VIDEO FISHING REPORT for JULY 23-30, 2017

WEEK AT A GLANCE

Weather – mid to high 90s / mid week showers/ high humidity

Water – low 80’s and mostly blue

Winds – Breezy at times

Fishing – Mostly slow for Las Arenas/ Hot and cold for La Paz changing all the time

Catching – Still loosing too many good fish after working hard to find them

Behind the bandana is a happy James Murphy from Salt Lake City who really wanted a big rooster and finally got one on his last day with Captain Jorge right off the sand near Punta Arenas

Our long-time amigo, Dick Winslow from Elk Grove CA , got this huge dog-tooth snapper with Captain Pancho while trolling for roosterfish in the shallow waters. It’s been a great week or two for these trophy fish!

Utah in the house with Dan Galli and Captain Jorge and a great colorful rooster mid-week when rain clouds threatened, but fortunately, the roosters bit! The fish was released strong!

One of the nicer bull dorado of the week with Phil Emard and Captain Joel taken from the far west side of La Paz Bay near San Juan de la Costa.

Dwayne Griffith only had one day to fish coming all the way from Texas but got his first dorado just outside of Bahia de los Muertos.

The Midwest was well-represented this week! From Iowa and visiting for the first time, Roger Damon with Captain Archangel started his week with a fistful of dorado and tuna at Las Arenas.

Oklahoma Cary Joy Hans is dwarfed by the size of Captain Gerardo and the size of her big roosterfish. This was her first time and she said “fishing is the most fun I’ve ever had outdoors!” The big fish was released.

James Murphy and Dan Galli jumped into a nice school of dorado and plugged the boat with some nice fish like these two!

Everytime Greg Miller comes down he has a knack for the roosterfish! This trip was no exception. Fish was released.

If you just have one day to fish and you come all the way from Texas, catching a big roosterfish is a good way to go especially if it’s your first time! Doug is from Rose, TX and was able to release the big fish taken just off the Punta Perrico rocks.

Nancy Enright had two really good day on the dorado with Captain Rogelio. She’s from the San Diego area and poses with one of their bigger bull dorado.

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay/ Suenos Bay Fishing Report for Week of July 23-30, 2017

Another week of surprises in the fishing and weather as every day seemed to bring new conditions; different fishing; and a changing bite that could be described as anything from terrible to good. It all depended on where you fish; what day you fish; what you were fishing for and which panga you were fishing in..and who you talked to. It ran the gamut and there was no way to pinpoint or determine how fishing was going to be.

LAS ARENAS/ MUERTOS BAY/ SUENOS BAY

Our Tailhunter Fleet had limited success at best, but mostly it was hard fishing and erratic catches when and if fish could be found. Water was still cooler than normal and there were two days of winds and even some rain from the south that didn’t help matters resulting in a mixed bag of fish leaving anglers trying just about anything to get the fish to bite.

Mostly, it was hit-or-miss. Wahoo were seen, but didn’t bite. A few yellowfin tuna and dorado popped up as well as some jack crevalle and some hard hits on those big dog-toothed snapper. And that was about as exciting as it got. Some boats got blanked. We did have a few marlin hooked up, but nothing stuck.

The most consistent biter as it has been all season, were the big rooster fish which created the most excitement. The smaller ones were respectable 25-30 pounders. The larger ones went up to 6o-70 pounds and were all found in those shallow waters between Punta Perrico and the Punta Arenas lighthouse. Some days, every boat we sent that wanted roosters got at least one of the big boys. All on live bait.

LA PAZ

Our Tailhunter La Paz Fleet had better results but even then, nothing that could be counted on. Here’s where luck really came to play.

Our boats ranged all over the bay and beyond looking for fish. Some days nothing seemed to be in the water. Other days, if you hit the right spot, it was game over. The fish were hitting everything in the water.

But here’s the rub. Sometimes, you’d find the spot and fish were everywhere. But they wouldn’t eat anything. Guys were throwing everything but their lunch burritos at the fish and they weren’t interested and were lockjaw. Other times, one boat would be bendo with every rod going off and the boat right next to it couldn’t get a bite. Or, they’d hit a spot and nothing but little firecracker dorado. All you could do was go fish and the day would bring it’s own surprises.

There were a lot of fish lost. There were a lot of smaller dorado thrown back. Those that were taken were nicer 5-25 pounders.

Above are just a few photos of some of our friends. Many thanks to them and our other Tailhunter tribe that I was not able to photo and properly thank . You are all appreciated more than you know. So far this year, we’ve collected and distributed several hundred pounds of goods!

MEXICAN MINUTE VIDEO FISHING REPORT FOR THE WEEK

WEEK AT A GLANCE (1-10 being best)

Fish Quality – 6 (some BIG fish this week!)

THE FULL REPORT

That’s a BIG “goldfish!” Doug McInnis was slow trolling a big ladyfish for roosters when this huge dog-tooth snapper (pargo perro / cubera snapper) came up and chomped it. He only had 40-pound test on and says the line came up incredibly frayed from the rocks! These are difficult catches! Captain Armando is rightfully beaming! They also hooked a rooster and about a big black marlin that got away.

Then…look what Doug McInnis and John Eddy did the 2nd day! They followed up one day of big pargo with MORE big pargo plus a dorado as well again with Captain Armando!

Bob LeBrun is all smiles under that hat with his first and largest roosterfish that he fought on light line for about 45 minutes in a tough battle. The fish bit a ladyfish early in the morning just off the Las Arenas lighthouse with Captain Gerardo. Good release on the fish too!

You just never know! Our buddy, Gama Flores from Desert Hot Springs CA was trolling in deep water for wahoo with Captain Pancho and both times got slammed by these huge dog-tooth snapper in deep water!

Dennis O’Brien from the San Diego area, caught and released his first roosterfish of about 40 pounds and topped it with some dorado to take home also!

She always does great! Check out Alicias Clegg’s huge jack crevalle! These are tough fish and the Mexican name for them is “toro” (bull) for just that reason!

Accomplished fisherman Al “El Al” Schneider from Orange CA has fished our area for many years but got his personal best roosterfish this week right off the sand near Punta Arenas. The fish was released.

Shelly Donnell has been a friend of ours for almost 20 years and brought his sister down this time. Fishing with Captain Joel, they got a nice mess of dorado fishing north of La Paz. Shelly and Gaby are from Portland OR area.

Big smiles and another dorado for Steve Harvey from the San Diego area. If you found the right spot, the dorado could be thick at times!

Nothing wrong with this big roosterfish and Bennett Clegg who had a banner day with a number of big roosters caught and released.

Some folks turn their noses up at triggerfish forgetting how tough they fight and how tasty they can be plus can provide lots of action. Andrew Harvey is holding a really big one here!

GREAT WEATHER BUT ERRATIC FISHING WEEK

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay/ Suenos Bay Fishing Report for Week of July 16-23, 2017

Great weather but a mixed bag of fishing this past week. The key was finding the warm water. Some patches of cold water moved in from the south so some of our more southern fishing spots like around Las Arenas were extremely picky but if you found the blue water areas more to the north, there were fish to be found.

The bite was really stick. Some might call it stink. Waters came from south and down deep bringing colder off-color water into the area and while there were some interesting fish caught, it was truly picky fishing at best. There were some scattered dorado. A few marlin hooked…most lost; an occasional wahoo; and some nice roosters and big pargo (best dog-tooth fishing I have ever seen!), but even those required some real work and luck to find. Overall, just not real great fishing. Fortunately, having the two fleets we moved folks over to fish with our La Paz Fleet where most found some better action.

LA PAZ

Dorado fishing held most of the interest for the week. But, it varied from place-to-place and literally from boat-to-boat. Five boats could be in a single area and two of those boats could be going crazy on the dorado. A third boat would get maybe 2 fish. The other two boats wouldn’t even get a bite but be only yards away from the others.

The next day, the boats that caught nothing would be the new superstar boats. Just no way to figure.

Likewise, areas that looked so promising with lots of sargasso and good currents wouldn’t produce anything while areas that looked like the desert without a sign of fish would suddenly explode with fish!

One note of importance. Lots of opportunities being lost by folks using our live bait. The live bait is big. Folks get a little impatient and not letting these dorado get the baits down into their moths and pulling the baits too soon. A little patience goes a long way. Let these dorado eat!

Another note, we could be into some typical seasonal afternoon showers this week with some predictions of afternoon rains. Just that time of year! Feeling very tropical down here.

MEXICAN MINUTE LA PAZ VIDEO FISHING REPORT

WEEK AT A GLANCE (1-10 being best)

Weather – 8 (Sunny hot and getting hotter. Great weather!)

Water – 7 (Still recovering from that mess 2 weeks ago, but getting bluer and warmer)

Fishing – 7 (Started slow but got better)

Fish Catching – 8 (Everyone catching)

SPECIES – 8 (I counted 15 different species caught this past week)

THE BIG PICTURE COMPLETE FISHING REPORT

Chris Layne came for “one big fish.” We all tried hard to get him a marlin, but he was pretty happy with this giant roosterfish he caught and released near the Las Arenas lighthouse in shallow water!

Whopper slug of a rooster fish for Bennett Clegg from Sacramento CA who has a knack for hitting big roosters when he fishes with Captain Victor of the Tailhunter Fleet. He released the fish. He and his wife hooked 7 large roosters that day.

Chuck Chandler from Alaska landed this big boy dog-tooth snapper off the rocks not far from Punta Arenas while staying at the Rancho Costa lodge in Bahia de los Muertos.

We hooked several wahoo this week, but couldn’t seem to get them to the boat, unlike our amigo, Gary Wagner who rocked this ‘hoo while visiting his place at Rancho Costa in Muertos Bay.

San Diego was well-represented this week with Andrew Harvey who had some nice days of dorado fishing toward the end of this week with his dad.

One of our friends from Canada, MacKay Spence, shows off one of his dorado.

Good start for Jason Amaro from New Mexico who spent the week fishing with us.

Yes, a couple of yellowfin popped into the mix like this one by our San Diego amigo, Scott Harvey.

She’s a regular roosterfish queen whenever she visits, Captain Victor with Alicia Clegg and ANOTHER roosterfish for the report! She and husband, Bennett, hooked and released 7 roosters that day.

Sydney Wagner with big smiles and another nice cabrilla for dinner at her dad’s place at Rancho Costa at Bahia de los Muertos.

Captain Joel with Murielle Chacron from Los Angeles and two of their several nice dorado they hooked fishing north out’ve La Paz.

Carlos didn’t catch this big tuna, but this was caught by Captain Rigo off the south end of Cerralvo Island fishing for the Tortugas. Big tuna keep popping up, but we can’t seem to get them stuck! This one was estimated over 100 pounds. If you look closely, you’ll see where a shark took a chunk off it’s back!

Miles Wagner from Colorado and Garrett Clark from Kansas have themselves a mess of mahi mahi steaks for dinner while staying at Rancho Costa Hotel. Dorado are getting bigger!

STARTS SLOW GATHERS SPEED

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay Fishing Report for Week of July 9-16, 2017

I hate to ever blame things on the full moon, but I need something to use as a scapegoat because early in the week fishing was horrendous. We had some pretty good fishing going then the week started like a flat tire on a old bicycle. It wasn’t going anywhere!

Then, as the week progressed, fishing got better! I don’t know why. I didn’t see many changes in the weather (hot) or water (warming and bluer) so the only thing I can point to is the full moon because as it waned the fish seemed to wake up.

Tailhunter La Paz Fleet

With our Tailhunter La Paz fleet, the numerous dorado we had been seeing that were all over the place, but not interested in feeding suddenly woke up and got hungry. Action improved as the week went on with mostly 5-20 pound mahi-mahi north of town. Add to that some great action on some huge jack crevalle and inshore species like snapper and cabrilla plus bonito and the week ended up on an up-note!

Tailhunter Las Arenas Fleet

For our Tailhunter Las Arenas fleet, pretty much the same thing. Early in the week, it was really slack. The conditions looked good but the fish just weren’t helping us out. Then, it got better and better each day.

Small football tuna (and some larger ones for commercial boats); big roosterfsh; a few wahoo; some larger pargo, cabrilla, jack crevalle, bonito and snapper and more dorado turned a nervous week into alot of variety!

Can only hope it gets better!

THE MEXICAN MINUTE LA PAZ VIDEO REPORT FOR THE WEEK

WEEK AT A GLANCE (1-10 being best)

Fishing: 5 (respectably OK at best. Last week it was a 1 or 2!)

Catching: 3 (some of the biggest fish still getting away…wahoo/ marlin/ dorado/roosterfish/ pargo)

Variety: 8 ( incredible variety possible: dorado, tuna, wahoo, blue marlin, sailfish, striped marlin, roosterfish, barred pargo, dog-tooth snapper, jack crevalle, sierra, bonito, cabrilla, palometa, pompano, red snapper, yellow snapper, triggerfish all hooked this week)

Weather: 7 (hot and sunny in the mid-90’s with evening and afternoon breezes)

Water: 4 (still messed up from last week’s red tide and cold upwellings, but improved over last week’s 2)

As a reward for finishing his first year at Texas A&M University with good grades, Quinn Mattson from Austin TX got to come down with his dad to fish with Tailhunter Sportfishing, and over two days latched onto 10 huge rooster fish at Las Arenas getting 5 to the panga for photos including this monster. Notice the great squint as he holds the rooster for a photo in very tired arms! All fish were released. He was fishing with Captain Arcangel.

Jed Hinkle, state senator from Montana, on his first trip to Mexico and first time fishing with Tailhunter Sportfishing in La Paz hooked and released 5 of these big rooster fish in a day right off the rocks and beach at Las Arenas east of La Paz all on live ladyfish in shallow water.

I”m sorry we didn’t get Chris Layne his marlin, but his first day started out with a nice rack of dorado north of La Paz fishing with his wife Anna!

Lisa Hernandez from Orange Co. saved the day with this big rooster she cradles in her arms just off the rocks at Punta Perrico east of La Paz. The fish was released.

Cathy Corda, a regular visitor yearly to fish with Tailhunter Sportfishing in La Paz with her favorite captain Pancho, poses with her wahoo she caught just outside of Bahia de Los Muertos on a deep running Rapala.

Yes, some football tuna popped up . Nick Ferguson on the beach in front of the Rancho Costa Hotel in Bahia de los Muertos.

Big smiles from Captain Pancho and Kimiko Inoue and a trophy cabrilla that ended up partially prepared at Tailhunter Restaurant as delicious sashime! She and husband Keith also got some tuna as well.

These two had the best week of fishing! Duane and son, Quinn with a pair of the larger dorado they caught with Captain Rogelio and our Tailhunter La Paz fleet over near Las Cruces.

She’s the best! Michele Conklin, our amiga, from Washington fished hard when fishing was tough and pulled out this nice big snapper!

Last week, for some reason, this great roostefish photo of Randy Kuntz didn’t post and it’s a beauty of a fish. Big smiles and a strong release! Well done, Randy!

First day on the water for Quinn Mattson turned out to be epic with one of several huge roosterfish he took just off the Punta Arenas lighthouse and released!

Gary Wagner, owner of Rancho Costa there in Bahia Suenos got out with his daughter, Sydney, on a successful day for gallos!

A visit from Canada and a tough jack crevalle for MacKay Spence and Captain Armando.

Just an amazing week of roosterfish! Jed Hinkle with a monster and captain Gerardo running the boat right off the rocks. Fish was released.

Nice smattering of yellowfin tuna this week. Quinn and his dad, Duane, got this one in addition to roosterfish.

Strangest story of the week…one of our La Paz fishing boats was out north of La Paz and found this pig swimming out in the middle of the ocean. The little guy was shivering when pulled aboard and no idea what or why he was doing way out there. He was brought back to shore and reportedly doing well. No…he was not made into carnitas and eaten!

NOT GREAT BUT FISHING REBOUNDS!

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay Fishing Report for Week of July 2-9, 2017

It wasn’t great fishing. It was good at best, but “spectacular” compared to the previous week when cold waters from Hurricane Dora to the south pushed in and turned waters green and cold. Then warmer waters from the north set off a huge red tide algae bloom that not only turned waters the color of rust and wine but chokes oxygen out’ve the waters and shut down what had been a very promising bite.

(I barely had any photos two weeks ago!!!)

Bottom line for this past week was that fishing was definitely on the re-bound as waters recovered daily from nature’s quirks! But still some “bumps” in the fishing. Not back to status quo yet.

TAILHUNTER LAS ARENAS FLEET

The week started slow. Very slow. To some degree waters remained chillier than normal and relatively off-color as it re-bounded from the previous week.

But, the fish definitely woke up about mid-week led by some outstanding rooster fish. It wasn’t consistent, but some days we had 2, 3, 4 or more hookups per panga with big fish close to shore in shallow water and taking it out on many first-time anglers. The “smaller fish” were 30 pounders. The larger fish were in the 70-80 pound class and willing to hit live ladyfish. It all depended on getting the lady fish which were like gold. All fish were released.

The amount of variety was more akin to May or April fishing. When the fish finally got with the program, we had not only rooster fish, but dorado, barred pargo, yellow and red pargo (snapper), dog-tooth snapper, big cabrilla (seabass), jack crevalle, sierra, triggerfish, pompano, palometa, some wahoo, a few football tuna and even some marlin hooked! You just never knew what would hit. Some boats did better than others but compared to last week at least the fish gave it some effort to the relief of all of us! Still scratchy fishing to where it SHOULD be, but things improving.

Last minute note: As of writing this, an offshore storm on the Pacific side on Saturday shut down fishing at Las Arenas with big waves and winds and dropped fishing back down. Can’t win. Nature always comes out on top. Hopefully, by the time you’re reading this, it bounces back.

TAILHUNTER LA PAZ FLEET

The red tide that shut down fishing a week ago it taking it’s time leaving us. The water was so choked with algea that some places almost looked like someone had poured red wine into the sea. You could put your hand into the ocean and not see your hand! That’s how bad it was and all that algae depletes the oxygen from the fish. The fish were lock-jawed all last week and it took awhile for them to get with the program this week.

Things got better as the week went on. Not great, but better. Waters turned blue again although still not up to speed. Fish activity increased as both dorado and marlin can easily be seen. The problem is that they didn’t alway bite or show much interest. However, as the week progressed, the dorado started to wake up. There were some nice flurries of 5-25 pound mahi-mahi and some full-on dorado rodeos with multiple rods bending. But one boat could be going full tilt and just a handful or yards away, another boat could be staring at limp rods. Same with the marlin. They’re showing up more and more but just not quite ready to go yet!

TAILHUNTER BONUS VIDEO FOR THE WEEK – “HUNTERS IN THE SHALLOWS” .

WEEK AT A GLANCE . (Scale of 1-10 being best)

Weather – 7 (getting warmer, but overall nice and sunny mid-90’s in the day / maybe some rain showers this week)

Wind – 6 (still breezy and brisk in the mornings)

Water – 5 (got a little bumpy and rough some days / still cooler green water around/ more clear blue water showing)

Fishing – 6 (More dorado and good action! Yay…finally dorado!)

Catching – 4 (larger fish frustrating anglers…larger dorado…wahoo…marlin…pargo…cabrilla…many lost! That’s fishing!)

THE BIG PICTURE REPORT

Lots of reasons to love this great photo! First…nice roosterfish just off the beach! Second…Claire Swift’s big smile on her first roosterfish that she REALLY came down to catch! Third…in 20 years of working for us, Captain Arcangel rarely smiles for the camera although he’s a fun guy! He’s got it going on here in this photo! They had 3 other fish that got away also! This beauty was released as well! Claire is from Dana Point CA.

Great start of the week of fishing for our great Washington friends, Grant and Carol Darby with Captain Gerardo and a nice box of dorado!

Every year, Diego Jimenez from Loveland, Colorado comes to visit us and does well. Check out the big roosterfish with Captain Pancho. The fish was released.

We call him the “Mayor.” Butch Tropez from Los Angeles brought the family to see us this year and usually makes at least one or two trips a year to come fish. He got into the dorado right off the Punta Perrico rocks just outside of Muertos Bay. Don’t have to go far for these fish!

Grant Darby from Washington has fished with us a zillion years, but got into three sizeable roosters with Captain Gerardo and said, “No mas!” These fish are a handful. All released. Grant had fun on the light tackle.

This lady can fish! Verda Boyd visits us every year and our amiga loves to fish…so much so that she left husband Tim back in the San Francisco area and came alone! He wishes he had come now after she had a full 3 days of pretty good fishing with Captain Victor!

From Colorado, Craig Weitzer was fishing with Captain Armando when he got two huge roosters . The largest got released but this one was not able to be let go, but the meat was donated. His first two roosters were beasty-fish!

Another of our regular great amigos who visits us sometimes twice a year and loves fishing with Captain Jorge, John McVey got into this week’s dorado bite.

This lady always gets her fish! Big roosterfish for Kelly Jimenez (Happy Anniversary, amiga!) with Captain Pancho. The fish was released .

Limits for our friend and first time, visitor Jeff Swift from Dana Point, who got a limit of dorado fishing with our Tailhunter La Paz fleet. (Those wily pargo and cabrilla are waiting for your next trip, Jeff!)

Carol Darby had quite a week with the dorado and also this roosterfish that’s almost as big as she is and a smiling big Captain Gerardo! They caught the fish not far off the Arenas lighthouse on light tackle. They also released the fish.

Verda Boyd has a nice variety of fish for the day with Captain Victor and Carlos including dorado, a big pompano, triggerfish, a barred pargo and a palometa! All great eating!

Captain Jorge and Diego Jimenez started his week off with some pretty dorado to fill the ice chest.

Wow! We’ve had some big needlefish this season but this one is prehistoric! Captain Rogelio helps Carol Darby (longer than she is tall!) pose with this creature!

DORADO SEASON OFFICIALLY ON…FOR AT LEAST THIS WEEK!

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay Fishing Report for Week of June 17-25, 2017

It’s been a long time…several seasons actually…since I’ve been able to blow the “dorado trumpet!” After about 2 1/2 seasons where el Nino conditions kept the dorado eenie-meenie small or almost non-existent, it’s nice to have the mahi-mahi back in our waters and, while not beasts, they’re nice good-sized fun fish that kept rods bent and folks (especially first-timers) happy. It’s been a long time since I’ve been able to say these two words…”DORADO LIMITS!”

While there’s still a bit of chill and wind in the mornings, it’s warm and sunny during the day and some of the best conditions we’ve seen in awhile. I’m sure that has had a lot to do with the improved fishing. Still some bump out there, but surely better than it has been and, although I hear there’s been a crazy heat wave in much of the lower U.S. and Pacific States, it’s been a balmy 95 here most of the week.

TAILHUNTER LAS ARENAS FLEET

There’s still some big rooster fish around. There’s still wahoo around. But, our counts surely didn’t show it this week although we did get a few of each. For once, there was something else to chase and for alot of folks, the opted for fun and action chasing the dorado schools that moved in rather than spend long hours chasing the bigger home run fish like the roosters and wahoo.

The roosters we did get were in the 25-60 pound class. The wahoo…well…we lost most of them but were about 30 pounders.

The excitement focused on some of the best dorado fishing we’ve seen in ages. Not huge fish, but good respectable 8-20 pounders and we were getting limits or near limits on some days with fish being released, especially smaller or female fish! There were also some larger bulls in the 25-30 pound class as well.

Another good sign is that these dorado will wake up the billfish and sure enough there was a huge black marlin and a blue marlin hooked as well!

Still some white bonito, pompano, huge jack crevalle and pargo mixed in as well.

TAILHUNTER LA PAZ FLEET

Another nice mix of fish with dorado leading the way. Again, it’s been awhile since dorado have been center-stage and even a longer time since I’ve been able to say that both our La Paz and our Las Arenas fleets are into the fish!

Like Las Arenas, the dorado have been that nice-grade medium-sized with occasionally larger bulls and not unusual to get early limits. The issue, mostly is finding the fish. There’s still some thick cold green water muddling around the island so the idea is to find the warmer water and blue currents. It’s so markedly different you can stand in the panga and see the two waters next to each other like night-and-day.

In the inshore waters, you can have fun all day if you’re tired of chasing dorado. In the rocks we had some great…but frustrating acition…on tough pargo, cabrilla and amberjack that rocked alot our efforts!
