Thanks to Gary Wagner, owner of the famous Giggling Marlin Restaurant in Cabo, who provided me with the pictures this week. Gary has a great place there in Bahia de los Muertos so he was on top of whatever fishing was happening. Here’s Gary with a big sierra. Makes great ceviche!

Another great eating fish is the pompano! One of the best sashime meats when sliced thin, but cooks up great too! Gary’s catch is another of the unusual fish we’ve been catching the last few weeks. Normally, we don’t see pompano until the spring!

One of the marlin hook-ups that got away. Great shot!

Whale watching season is here and the gray whales are filling up out there at Lopez Mateos in Bahia Magdalena. Amy Kasper gives us a big smile as two of the gentle animals come to check out the panga. The whales are gonna be around until about early March and we’re booking trips right now to spend some time out there at Bahia Magdalena. It’s a great once-in-a-lifetime adventure in the calm waters of the bay!

Thanks, Sacramento! We had a great show at the ISE which took place at the California State Fairgrounds from Thursday to Sunday. Thanks to everyone who visited me, Jill and Catlyn at the booth and signed up also to come visit us in La Paz. We’re on our way now to the Seattle area at the Puyallup State Fairgrounds. We’ll be there from Wednesday to Sunday! Come visit us and check out all the great fishing, hunting and outdoor activities and displays!
WINDS BACK LAST WEEK AND FISH TAKE THE WEEK OFF TOO
La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay Fishing Report for Week of Jan. 17-24, 2016
Not really much to tell you this report. Last week for about the first time in 2 months the winds laid down over a series of days. The bait came up. The fish charged in. We had wahoo, yellowtail, sailfish and marlin ripping it off just a few hundred yards off the beach.
Then, Sunday came up and the winds came back and for the most part, fishing got stinky again. On the upside, not many fishermen this time of year, anyway. Some sierra, cabrilla, bonito and jack crevalle caught. More typical of this time of year. Two marlin hooked and lost. It’s crazy to even see marlin in the middle of winter!
This week is looking better. Tuesday and Wednesday will probably be too rough to fish, but the other days, the winds are moderate. Not great…but fishable. Air temps are really nice. High 70’s to high 50’s. Sun is out. Nice time to be in town!
THANK YOU SACRAMENTO – WASHINGTON HERE WE COME!

Bennett and Alicia Clegg came by the booth to set up their trip with their famlies to come fish in La Paz with us again and Alicia found out she’s our 2016 cover gal with the big rooster she caught last year! Congratulations!

Here’s trouble! Talk about Talhunter Tribal Members…a big toast to these amigos who have all been to La Paz many times with us and all set up new trips for 2016. You guys are the best!

You probably won’t find funner or more enthusiastic amigos than Darryl and Kathy Pietak who are coming back to see us in La Paz this summer! Darryle always sports one of our Tailhunter shirts!

BFF’s! Catlyn joins Jilly and our bestest amiga, Carrie Wilson from the Department of Fish and Wildlife. These two / three can be a fun handful in our booth.

“We just stopped for a quick tequila…” That’s how it starts…in our booth at Sacramento! They visit us every year! Cheers, boys!
Whew! What a week and boy did we have fun at the International Sportsmans Expo at the California State Fairgrounds this past week! The show as off-the-hook, super! Jill and I were hoarse at the end of each of the 4 days as our aisles were packed and our booth was just a buzz of amigos and clients! It was surely a party and thank you to all of you who came to visit and say hi. Great to see so many of you and thanks for the hospitality, especially all of you Tailhunter Tribal members who added to our caloric intake with goodies like candies, cookies, teriyaki chicken, sushi, Chinese pork buns, bottles of wine and tequila…you all rock!
Also thanks to all of you who booked trips to come see us in 2016. We’re looking forward to your visit and I’ll start growing the fish bigger for you!
We’re on our way now north. We’re actually in the van and Jill is driving so I can type! We’ve got 1 1/2 days to get to the Seattle area to set up for the Northwest Sportsmans Show at the Puyallup, Washington Fairgrounds. This is another massive show and will go FIVE days from Wednesday to Sunday. Come by and say hi….check out our new brochure and Tailhunter T-shirts. Let’s talk about fishing in La Paz with Tailhunter this year! Hope to see you!
CELEBRITY ALERT at our TAILHUNTER RESTAURANT

Yes, it’s him! Mr. Charlie Sheen (“Two And A Half Men”) stopped by last week and had Benny cook him up some of our famous teriyaki tacos. Charlie told Benny, they were the “best ever!” Muchas gracias! Never know who will walk in!
That’s our story!

Joe Corbin from Ohio stuck this bad boy wahoo and got even more on the boat before noon.

Sysco is 7-years-old. He got his first marlin and gets a hand from Captain Pancho. Check out that flat blue ocean at Bahia de los Muertos

Like I said, it was a crazy week. A rare -caught Baja Golden Grouper by Gary Wagner, who owns the famous Giggling Marlin Restaurant in Cabo but was fishing out’ve his place at Muertos Bay.

Healthy PHAT yellowtail were also biting this week. Roger Thompson got this on on the troll. Hamachi for the barbecue!

Most of the marlin and sailfish hooked this week either got off or were released. This one was an attempted , but regretfully, unsuccessful release. The meat was not related.

One of our super-star anglers Roger Thompson with another big wahoo and another super photo!
WHOAAA! WHAT’S GOING ON HERE?
Ls Paz / Las Arenas-Muertos Bay Fishing Report for Week of Jan. 10-17, 2016
What’s going on? For the last 3 months the fishing has been so spotty because of strong winds every week that it’s been hard to get out to fish. Fishing has basically been a non-factor in anyone’s vacations!
But then this week…Whoaa! I even had trouble getting photos for the fishing reports but many thanks to amigos Gary Wagner and Roger Thompson for getting out on the water!
It’s all about the wind, like I’ve been saying.
The winds chilled out and calmed down. And the fish didn’t just bite. They blew up! And not the kind of fish we normally catch! This is WINTER! We’re supposed to be catching inshore rock fish like pargo, cabrilla, snapper and other species like bonito and jack crevalle.
What happened this week can only be chalked up to the unpredictable El Nino conditions . We had marlin…sailfish…yellowtail…rooster fish and a great bite on wahoo too!
The fish were literally not far out’ve Bahia de los Muertos and close to shore. As one angler said, “I’ve never seen so much bait in the bay this time of year!” Another of our anglers said he was trolling some Rapalas and they got 7 wahoo before 11 a.m. that morning and added yellowtail to the box as well. There’s apparently a ton of mackerel and ladyfish in the bay too so that is a great sign!
I have no idea how much of an anomaly this is or how long it will last, but it’s pretty exciting stuff! But a quick update…the winds started blowing again on Sunday. And no fish.
TAILHUNTER TAKES THE SHOW TO THE SACRAMENTO INTERNATIONAL SPORTSMAN’S EXPO

We sure have alot of fun in our booth. Jill and I are joined for some levity by our good Colorado friends, Dr. Art Flippin and his wife Debbie Devine. They have visited us in La Paz many times over the years!

Good as it gets and staring ’em early. Young Cortez Sanchez sporting one of our Tailhunter T-shirts down the aisle at the Denver ISE show. Cortez and his family have been long-time friends and “tribal members” of Tailhunter Sportfishing

They visited us last year for the first time and had such a good time, they came back to visit us at the ISE show in Denver and book another trip for this year. Bill and Janice Fowler and brother Ed Thielke who show off one of our shirts he got last year and had Jill and I autograph!
It’s a wrap! Just finished an incredible week at the Denver ISE show at the downtown Convention Center. That’s two shows in the book. First show at Billings, Montana and now Denver. It was a grand time. Thanks to so many of our amigos who came to see us and to all our new amigos that we met and even bigger thank you to all of you who came by and booked trips to come fish with us in La Paz this year!
And now, onto Sacramento for the International Sportsmens Expo at the California State Faigrounds.
The show is Thursday to Sunday and we’ll be in our booth every day! Here’s more details: http:/http://www.sportsexpos.com/attend/sacramento/
Come see us. Pick up a copy of our 24-page brochure and our DVD and check out the new-design Tailhunter T-shirts. And of course, come talk to us about fishing in 2016 in La Paz! Hope to see you!
That’s our story!

Captain Gerardo’s clients didn’t want their photo taken with their striped marlin, but they did want a photo of their fish so he shouldered the task. Not the close proximity to the Las Arenas in the background.

Israel and Manuel just figured to go out and catch some nice inshore fish for dinner. They ended up with a surprise sailfish and this marlin. The sail was released but could not release the marlin.

Those of you who know our famous Captain Pancho, he took his son, Francisco, Jr. (Panchito) out fishing this week. The 11-year-old got himself a marlin this week as well!

Just a big “MUCHAS GRACIAS!” to all our new and old Montana amigos who stopped by our booth to visit, say hi and set up their La Paz fishing trips. Thanks for treating us so well! We’ll be back!
BILLFISH IN JANUARY?
La Paz – Las Arenas/Muertos Bay Fishing Report for Week of Jan. 3-10, 2016
We finally had a pretty OK week as far as wind is concerned although it was still a bit blustery. As storms slammed into California and other parts of the West and other areas of the U.S. there’s usually an affect down in Baja and this week was no different. But, there were actually some “windows of opportunity” to get some fishing in. The only issue…there’s not many fishermen in town. Snow birds…yes. Windsurfers…yes. Yacht and sailors…yes. Fishermen…not so much.
But, it’s off-season. So, fishermen aren’t much expected anyway.
But, we did have some folks and I guess we just add-it-up-to-El-Nino…craziness. But, it’s the dead of winter and we caught BILLFISH! We’re not supposed to be catching billfish right now. Billfish time is when the water is warm and the weather is hot (relatively speaking). We’re supposed to catching “cold water fish” like sierra and pargo and cabrilla (sea bass).
Anyway, so we go out…and just outside of Muertos Bay…striped marlin and sailfish are hanging out! We’re pretty much talking a few hundred yards out. How long will they stay? What are they doing there? I have no idea. Just a fluke or not, no way to know. But fun fishing. No one complaining!
Winds blowing double digits early this coming week but later in the week, there’ll be some opportunities to get back on the water.
THANKS BILLINGS, MONTANA! NOW HEADED TO DENVER!

Tailhunter is on it’s 2016 road tour right now. We just finished their first show of the year at the Great Western Rockies Sport Show in Billing, Montana and had a super time and got to meet lots of new amigos. It was crazy cold down to subzero -12 degrees below zero one night. But, we sure had an incredible time and enjoyed the heck out’ve the show, but moreso all the great Montana folks. Thanks for the wonderful hospitality and we’ll see a bunch of you this year in La Paz to fish with us!
This week we head to the largest show in the area. We’ll be in Denver, Colorado at the Convention Center for the International Sportman’s Show. It runs Thursday to Sunday this week and will be a great time for the whole family with almost 700 vendors of camping, fishing, hunting, boating and other outdoor sports. Come see us and let’s talk about fishing in La Paz this year!
Here’s a link with all the details and how to purchase tickets online: Denver International Sportsmans Show Details
Hope to see you this week in Denver!

Some days look like this out there. We had a few this week. Others, are so windy and blown out that only the windsurfers and kiteboarders are enjoying it.

Jonathan and Jilly will be in their booth this week in Billings, Montana at the Great Rockies Sport Show Jan. 8-10. Come see us! It’s at the Billings, Fairgrounds!
NOT MANY FISHERMEN AROUND & STILL WINDY
La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay Fishing Report for Week of Dec. 27, 2015 to Jan. 3, 2016
Happy New Year Everyone! Hope the year is off to a good start and that you all had fantastic holiday seasons.
Well…
Not much to tell. Out of 7 days, we had 3 days that were fishable because of the strong winds on the other days. That’s a better week than most of the weeks we’ve had the last 2 months where some weeks the wind was too strong on any days to get the pangas out.
I guess the other side is that there aren’t man fishermen either since it’s off-season. For a good reason. It’s the windy winter season which is why the area is filled up with more windsurfers and kite boarders than anything else.
For fishing, there’s some fish out there sporadically. But, hard to get a decent read on it when there’s few fishermen and we’re not out everyday. However, there’s some rooster fish around. We did get a bite on what musta been a big wahoo as it tore right through 100-pound test. There’s still some marlin around and inshore, pargo, cabrilla and some bonito. But bait is hard to get and I’m surprised there’s not more sierra around this time of year. Everything is screwy with El Nino.
This coming week seem like one of the calmest weeks in a long time so hopefully a better report next week!

That’s about what a mix of fish looks like right now. A little of this and that…some snapper…pargo…cabrilla…maybe some dorado! All good eats. It all depends on windows of opportunities between the winds.

Another “juvenile” whaleshark like the kind in La Paz Bay that everyone wants to swim with. This young fella is about 15 feet long. Thanks to Carl Zalinskii for the great photo. It’s great when the waters are calm, but tough to find if it’s choppy!

Another of Carl Zalinski’s photos snorkeling with one of the whalewharks in La Paz Bay. Don’t worry. They’re very gentle and don’t have teeth!

You get the idea of the scale of these big fish next to a snorkeler. These are the youngsters! The adults in the open ocean can reach lengths of 40-50 feet.
NICE TIME TO BE IN TOWN BUT NOT MANY FISHERMEN AROUND – STILL WINDY TOO!
La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay Fishing Report for Week of Dec. 20-27, 2015
Regretfully, not much activity to report. Only two days were fishable this week that didn’t have strong winds. There was even a bit of rain our there on the water. Of the two days, we had some folks get out one day and that was it.
It’s Christmas week. The town isn’t really busy and those that are in are snowbirds just catching some sunshine or having a winter get-away. It’s off-season and most of the captains have their boats out’ve the water as well. It’s pretty. It’s just really breezy.
Lots of folks are trying to swim with the whalesharks as well, but like fishing, it’s incumbent on the ability to get out there in between the winds. Although the whalesharks are right in the bay in shallow water, if it’s windy and choppy, it’s difficult to find them, let alone trying to snorkel with them. However, the popularity of swimming with the whalesharks has grown exponentially since the city of La Paz started protecting them. At times, there’s been dozens of whalesharks in the bay and honest, it’s a once, in-a-lifetime experience with these gentle “juveniles” that run 10-20 feet long and are true “sharks” but they have no teeth per se and feed on plankton and other itty-bitty things…not people and mammals! Sometimes, there’s literally a whole fleet of boats out there with folks swimming with the whalesharks.
But, the disappointment is that so many folks are coming but don’t understand that during this time of year, you can’t go swimming with them EVERY DAY because of the wind. Other parts of the year, you just pick your day.
However, I get so many folks this time of year who say, “We’re from Canada and we are driving up from Cabo for one day and want to go swim with the whalesharks” or “We just drove 1000 miles to swim with the whalesharks and have just one day.” Then, they show up and it’s a day no one can get out!
Anyway, as far as fishing, there’s still a surprising variety of fish out there on the days we can fish. Cold water species like sierra are becoming more frequent. Inshore species like pargo and cabrilla are around the rocky and reef areas and always make great eating and don’t discount trigger fish for great eating as well. Plus, a few pelagic species like dorado and billfish too.
Some of the commercial guys are still finding yellowtail and amberjack off the drop off by the lighthouse. Those guys gotta make a living so they’re a little more inclined to go out even when it’s less than favorable conditions. But that’s a different ballgame than folks who want to sport fish. But, even then, it’s hard on the commercial guys because the winds limit their access to the waters as well. But, when they can get out, they’re finding the fork tails in the deeper water.
Hope everyone had a great Christmas and a continuing great Holiday Season! Happy New Year for 2016!

From Virginia, they made the most of having only one day to fish, Richard Dyer on the right got this striped marlin and gets and assist from his buddy, Josh Saitelbach, on the beach at Bahia de los Muertos. They were not able to release the fish and donated the meat.

It’s official. This barred pargo /pargo mulatto shot in October this year north of La Paz has been certified but the International Underwater Spearfishing Association (IUSA) as a new spearfishing world record. It was weighed on the certified scales at Tailhunter Sportfishing at 38.5 pounds and was shot by Matt Deischel who lives near Denver, Colorado. After weighing the fish, he and his buddies donated all the meat to the local orphanage. In Mexico, spearfishing with tanks is illegal and elite athletes, like Mark, are all free divers who hunt while holding their breaths and diving to great depths. Matt was diving with Pistoleros de Mar in La Paz.

Photo of Nick Jones, Matt’s buddy, outside the Tailhunter offices with the scale, showing the 38.5 pound reading. The fish would have been heavier except it was not weighed immediately after it was boated since the scale is located back in La Paz so the fish had already been dead for several hours and dehydrated.
WINDOWS OF OPPORTUNITY TO FISH PRODUCES…FISH!
La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay Fishing Report for Week of Dec. 13-20, 2015
Another week of double-digit winds. Only 2 real days that were even remotely fishable. Other days would’ve been miserable if we tried to go out and, I guess we could’t fished if we really had to, but why?
Fortunately, this time of year, we have snow birds who are more inclined to seek sunshine instead of fish. If they want to fish, it’s maybe a day or two. Therefore, we can tell them to postpone trips or wait until the forecast shows the best days with the least wind. But, it’s pretty easy to calculate. If there’s storms north of the border, chances are there’s wind down where we are in La Paz. Overall, it’s been cool by our standards with daytime temps in the mid-60’s and lows to the low 50’s! Where the blankets?
For the fishing, the inshore stuff is the best deal. Working the rocks and shallow areas, there’s some decent cabrilla with barred pargo around. They can provide some good action although for inexperienced anglers, it can be frustrating trying to pull the stubborn fish from the rocks. As well, there’s some sierra around and bonito. There had been yellowtail biting at the drop off at Las Arenas but with the winds we weren’t able to check out those areas this week.
Offshore, surprisingly, there’s some dorado breezing through and commercial guys tell me there’s still some wahoo around plus we did hook a marlin that was either late in the season or way ahead of his friends for the year.
FELIZ NAVIDAD!

Feliz Navidad…Mele Kalikimaka…Merry Christmas…Happy Hanakkuh…in whatever language, God bless and have a great Christmas and holiday season.
As we pull up on another Christmas, Jill and I (and our rescued kitten…Catlyn!) wanted to wish all of you and your families a safe, happy and peaceful Christmas. God bless you all and thank you for being a blessing in our lives.
That’s our story!

A nice time to be in La Paz. It’s pretty quiet these days. The city returns to being a sleep beach-side pueblo in many respects. I think it’s that lull before Christmas. The video was taken from the 2nd floor terrace at out Tailhunter Restaurant. Not exactly rush hour traffic. Sun’s out and it’s breezy but some days can be very windy.

This is about how choppy and windy it is…even in our normally flat water bay! This photo is from Baja Joe’s over in Sargento. This is their high season.

A view of the new CBX pedestrian bridge that just opened up this week that allows passengers in San Diego to check in and now walk directly from San Diego to the new Tijuana Airport making it even easier now to fly to La Paz, and other Mexican destinations, especially for S. Californians.
NOT MUCH HAPPENING – Fish and City Hunkered Down for Navidad
La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay Fishing Report for Week of Dec. 6-13, 2015
Not much to tell you this week. About the only ones who seem to be having a great time on the water are the windsurfers and kite boarders who come down this time of the year specifically because it’s windy. They’re having a great time and a big reason they flock to the area. But, their high-season, is also the reason it’s the off-season for fishing. It’s chilly and windy! That area between Las Arenas and Cerralvo Island is like a wind FUNNEL making it world-class for the windsurfing crowd. When the winds die down, and they leave is when the fishermen start rolling back in. So, yea…good wind are blowing…again!
And, generally that’s how it was this week again as it has been now for over a month. We didn’t have many anglers this week and when we did, well…it was windy. And wind and fishing usually aren’t a good recipe for fishing success.
There were some small cabrilla and pargo caught. We did have two marlin hooked that got off. Some bonito and trigger fish and that was about it.
As I said, not many fishermen these days and town is quiet. Peaceful. Very nicely so, in many respects. It might surprise many of our regulars. Not much traffic. Everyone is getting ready for Christmas. It’s a good time to be here. Even if you’re not fishing. Or catching. Still beats working. Just come and hang out. And escape the snow, rain and cold from wherever you area!
NEW SAN DIEGO / TIJUANA AIRPORT BRIDGE FINALLY OPENED!

The Cross Border Xpress (CBX) will operate just like a regular terminal on the U.S. side where you check in then walk across the bridge to the Tijuana Airport already checked in!
The new CBX pedestrian bridge just opened this past week to much anticipated fanfare. It’s great. So many folks take advantage of flights out of the new Tijuana Airport for great flights direct to La Paz and other Mexican destinations. Previously, you had to take a shuttle or taxi across the border; drive yourself; have someone else drive you; or take a connecting flight from somewhere else. Not always the most convenient.
With the new bridge, it’s just like an extension of the Tijuana Airport. You can part on the San Diego side. There’s long-term parking. You can check in at the terminal just like normal. Then, there’s a small toll to walk across the bridge to the Tijuana Airport to board your plane. Easy! This will be great for us in La Paz.
Here’s more info about it. Click the link:

Have a great week!

There’s some nice early season yellowtail off the deep hole near the Arenas lighthouse. Robert Pettit with one of several taken this week. Nice grade!

First timers, Ron Meacham and Allyson Tarr with Captain Pancho and their big sailfish posing on the beach at Bahia de los Muertos. The fish could not be released but meat was donated.

Ken Errair had a pretty nice day, didn’t he! In between winds, he boated two big amberjack, a trophy cabrilla and the striped marlin (attempted release not successful). Ken just moved to our area at El Sargento.

Don Nuttbrock with another nice yellowtail. Don is from Milwaukie, Oregon.
WINDS DIE LATE IN WEEK and FISH BITE!
La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay Fishing Report for Week of Nov. 30-Dec. 6, 2015
Good thing we didn’t have any fishermen earlier in the week. The winds were up again and really ripping it up. In fact, we were watching the weather reports pretty carefully as Hurricane Sandra was building up to the south of us. This is very very late in the season to be seeing anything like hurricanes so there was some trepidation. It’s been a wacky two seasons of El Nino conditions so the weather is out-of-kilter.
The hurricane was never going to hit La Paz, but enough of the periphery of the storm had a good chance of rain and some very intense winds…stronger than what we had already been having. By the time the storm hit mainland Mexico, the hurricane had diminished to a manageable tropical storm and nothing but clouds and some big fun surf for surfers in Cabo San Lucas.
But, we still got winds in La Paz. That generated some big waves too. Waves have been wacking the waterfront malecon with such force that spray hits passing traffic and much of the sand below the seawall has been dragged out exposing all the underlying rocks!
However, like I said, we had no fishermen early as this is off-season now until about March.
Fortunately, just as the winds dropped off, we had anglers show up. And it was better than I thought it would be.
The rooster fish bit! They got into some 30-40 pound fish. All released.
There were some billfish lost and some medium dorado. Also, they got into that yellowtail bite that’s been taking place off Las Arenas the last few weeks at the big hole where the shallow sands drop off to deeper water and where we have also been getting some big cabrilla and amberjack.
It seems the equation is the same. If there’s no winds, the fish bite. If it’s windy…best to stay in town and have a beer.
That’s our story! Have a great week.

Huge trophy cabrilla for Michael Nuttbrock from West Linn, Oregon, who was down with his dad, son and brother and got in some good fishing this past week.

Off the lighthouse, Myles Panze got into the yellowtail bite with some nice slug forktails that were in the 25-30 pound class. They said the bite was early. They also got a big striped marlin and lost another one.

Thirteen-year-old Ayden Nuttbrock had himself quite a week of fishing with dad, uncle and grandpa. From Oregon, he got yellowtail, pargo, marlin, bonito and even this dorado!

Captain Jorge with our Tailhunter Las Arenas Fleet helps Riley and Brady Dunn from Boulder, CO, who were able to squeeze in one day of fishing with us and made the best of it. Brady hooked this nice striped marlin while Riley said he “drank beer!” It was their first time fishing in La Paz and they donated all the meat to the pueblo.

Three generations…Michael…son Ayden…grandpa Don from Oregon started their fishing week off with some nice yellowtail. They’re standing on the beach posing at Bahia de Los Muertos.

Ken Errair got in some fishing before the winds started coming up later in the week and stuck it to this really nice amberjack. You can tell by the jacket and rough water behind him it’s started to get chippy!

She always does well anytime she comes fishing. Taylor Murphey from Long Beach holds up two of yer nice yellowtail she caught earlier in the week.

First timer, Andy Nuttbrock, holds up his striped marlin he caught off Muertos Bay. The fish could not be released and the meat was donated. He and his family actually hooked three marlin.
WHAT A DIFFERENCE A WEEK WITHOUT WIND MAKES!
(Enjoying It While We Can!)
La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay Fishing Report for Week of Nov. 22-29, 2015
What a crazy week! With the winds all month literally blowing everyone off the water, we could only hope for the best and prepare for the worst. Fortunately, being off-season, we don’t have alot of fishermen these last few weeks when it was hard just getting bait or standing up in the pangas…or even getting out…let alone catching a fish.
Well, this past week, we finally got a break and the winds took it easy on us and took a week off. What a difference a week makes!
We got quite a variety of fish. Nothing crazy, but some really nice fishing especially for alot of our first timers. We got just about everything except tuna! Talk about variety, we had cold and warm water species mixing it up.
There were striped marlin and sailfish between 100 and 120 pounds . We had some medium-sized 30 pound rooster fish near the shore. There were 20-30 pound yellowtail and even some amberjack off the deep hole near the Las Arenas lighthouse and at the south end of Cerralvo.
There were some big-boy pargo and cabrilla plus bonito and some sierra. We even had a few dorado and some wahoo biters that broke off.
From day-to-day, we never knew what was going to bite or what the anglers would come back with. It was a surprise every day and in between each panga.
And that was our week. Right at the end, things started falling apart again as Hurricane Sandra started forming up to the south of us. It never showed up, but it did send up winds and some rains to the area and well…there went the fishing. As I write this, the winds are slated to blow again through about mid-week before it lets up again.
Hope everyone had a safe, happy and peaceful Thanksgiving!
That’s our story!

From Napa CA, Danny McPhee gets an assist from Captain Victor on another big roosterfish they caught close to shore near Punta Perrico. Dan and his brother, Bob, got 5 big roosters between 40-60 pounds and released all of them. These were their first roosterfish.

In rough water near the Las Arenas lighthouse at the drop-off, Taylor was jigging and hooked this color-ful amberjack. She was with her uncle, Roger Thompson, who says commercial guys using bait were catching yellowtail nearby.

Here’s a fish you don’t see often. A tasty sheephead caught by Joel Zarmati. I don’t think I’ve ever posted a sheephead photo in the 20 years that I’ve posted my fishing reports! I’ve seen them occasionally when scuba diving but never seen one caught. Joel lives in El Sargento.

Bob McPhee gives a grimace as he and Captain Victor try to hold onto a struggling roosterfish long enough to take a photo and releasing the big fish. Bob and his brother Dan had a double hook-up on the roosters with both anglers bent simultaneously.
BIG ROOSTERS HIGHLIGHT ANOTHER DIFFICULT WINDY WEEK
La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay Fishing Report for Week of Nov. 15-22, 2015
Winds were again the big story this week. Two weeks in a row, the northern winds ripped in with speeds over 20 mph and some gusts over 30 mph. Fortunately, it’s already off-season. Not many fishermen and those that did go out knew it would be rough and perhaps not very productive. Many of our folks right now are coming from colder areas so they’re just happy it’s not snowing! The sun is still out and it’s honestly a pleasant 84 degrees most days. Except for the winds if you’re on the water.
All week the La Paz port captain had his yellow warning flags out, but honestly, if you’d seen what our calm La Paz bay looked like all week, it was like a froth. Waves crashed on the malecon waterfront tossing spray on passing cars. There were wind-driven waves on some beaches that were easily surfable on a boogie board and one of the huge navigation buoys was torn from it’s chains and tossed up on the shore. We have many friends who are sailboaters in La Paz and even they thought it was best to just tie up to the docks and drink beer!
However, as mentioned, we did have some hearty folks out there who did brave the elements and still had a good time. Not much going on offshore and frankly too rough. Plus bait is an issue when big winds make waves. Big waves make it hard to get bait. But, inshore the were decent catches of pargo, cabrilla and some huge triggerfish. Plus a few yellowtail hooked (and lost). Best bite was on the rooster fish. Towards the end of the week as the winds calmed down, commercial anglers using live bait were hooking some yellowtail so we want to keep an eye on that. But roosterfish produced the larger fish of the week.
I’m really surprised that they are here this late. Still, some 10-60 pound fish hanging out close to shore. If you’re not looking to bring home any meat, these fish are great sport and there’s nothing like tying into a 40-50 pound beast on light tackle. But all of them are getting released for the most part as the meat isn’t very good eating.
This week, winds look like they might calm down a bit so hopefully fish will be more cooperative.
That’s our story!
