Dave Lindell Pat McDonell tags 6-15 wahoo

One of our frequent amigos, Dave Lindell, from Pendleton OR with Pat McDonell from Western Outdoor News and Dave’s big wahoo…his first. This might have been the largest fish of the 3 day event. Dave had several others hooked up as well.

Some other great fun amigos and always a blast to be around Dave and Michele (“with one “L” ) Conklin who also had some big fish and out of everyone might have also caught the most fish of any team in the Panga Slam event with the number of hookups they had each day. They’re from Spokane WA.

First timer, but hopefully not the last time, Paul Csenar from Newport Beach is another of our amigos that got his first wahoo this week…in fact, he got TWO! He also got his first marlin this week as well.

Michele and Dave Conklin tags day 2 dorado 6-15

On fire! Michele Conklin with the largest dorado of the week with husband Dave and a nice cabrilla. They had more hookups than anyone else and a great variety of fish!

What the heck? It’s June! Phil Okamoto got this yellowtail off Espirito Santo Island. No one could believe it until we saw the photos and the fillets. Most yellowtail run from February to Apil when the waters are cold. Waters are almost 80 degrees right now!

Right there in Bahia de Los Muertos, there’s some nice schools of roosterfish like this one caught by Catlyn Wagner right near where we launch the boats. Her dad is good amigo, Gary Wagner, who owns the famous Giggling Marlin Restaurant in Cabo San Lucas. The fish was released.

Boy did I goof!!! I’m really meticulous about photos on these fishing reports that I’ve done now for almost 20 years. But, I forgot this photo from two weeks ago of our own Uncle Johnny Enright and his wife Nancy! OMG!!! Sorry, Johnny and Nancy! I owe you some big time drinks at Tailhunters next time!!!

Kansas in the house! Marion Lawver with another fine roosterfish off Bahia de Los Muertos in flat calm waters! Fish was released.

Surprise catch for Phil Okamoto and Kristine McGrath. While fishing Espirito Santo Island with our Tailhunter La Paz fleet, they got a double hook up on two big sharks that they thought were makos, but turned out to be blacktips. One eventually busted off but the other took a two hour fight. It yielded some beautiful white tasty meat. Phil stuck his camera underwater to take some shots and turns out…there were as many as SIX other sharks under the boat!

FISHING STILL TRYING TO MAKE A COMEBACK AFTER STORMS

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay Fishing Report for Week of June 14-21, 2015

Happy Father’s Day Everyone to you and your families and all dad’s everywhere!

The week started off with all of us watching with a bit of trepidation as Hurricane Carlos was building far to the south of us. Just what we need! But, like many others, Carlos petered out long before it ever touched Baja and went inland leaving us with a great week of nothing but warm blue Baja skies…temperatures in the low 90’s…and water that seems to keep growing prettier the further we get away from the last storm, Blanca, two weeks ago.

Blanca put the hammer on what had been an increasingly good fishing season. So, now that it’s passed, it seems with each passing day and the further we get on the calendar away from Blanca, the better the water gets and hence the better the fishing seems to be as well. Although, Storm Carlos did send some wind and big waves our way!

Overall, a pretty decent week of fishing. It’s been better, but this week was not all that terrible by any stretch! It just could have been even better as things try to right themselves and get on an even keel.

LAS ARENAS/ BAHIA DE LOS MUERTOS

As mentioned above, with each day away from the storm, things get better. Prior to the storm, we had an epic wahoo bite…probably the best I’ve seen here in the 20 years I’ve been working down here. So, anytime something like a weather-related event comes along, I get worried.

Well, the wahoo sure seem to be back. As one of my guys told me, “There were free-swimming wahoo all over the place!” Never seen anything like it. The fish are sticking around for some crazy reason and surely no one is complaining.

The fish are 20-50 pounds and eating bait as well as lures like dark-colored Rapalas. Rapalas, especially purple and dark-colored black/ white or grey combinations have been hot. Bring some down if you can. Especially the Rapala CD-18 or even better, the Rapala X-Rap 15 of Rapala XRap 30. The stores here in town keep selling out even with the price tags of almost 40 dollars for them. Worse is that many anglers are losing their fish so if the lure belonged to a captain…adios…there goes $40 bucks!

If you have time, take the treble hooks off of the lures and replace them with single hooks!

But, the truth is that these are home-run fish. Big or go home! For every fish we put in the panga, 2-4 fish are lost! Or, worse, many times, one of our pangas come in and the anglers have long faces. They got nothing, but tell me they lost 3, 4 or 5 fish! These fish are fast and hard chargers and they have sharp teeth and a hard jawbone so you really have to stick that hook hard when they bite.

For other fish, the other news is that it seems the marlin really woke up…finally! Quite a few marlin getting hooked up. Mostly stripers and blues with stripers going 90-120 pounds and blues up to 300. Every day this week several were hooked up and fortunately, most fish are getting released.

Additionally, rooster fish were back nicely in the counts. Most fish were 15-30 pounds, but there’s a school of 2-10 pounders right in Bahia de Los Muertos and if you just wanted to stay in the bay and catch-and-realease small roosters all day, it’s not out of the question.

Not many dorado showing up which is a surprise! Again, the conditions are the dispositive factor. Late in the week we had big waves and winds that were residual effects of Hurricane Carlos way to the south of us. Although the sun kept blazing and we didn’t get any storm conditions, the storm did send up waves and wind which then affected the fishing negatively.

LA PAZ

Good bit of variety for our Tailhunter anglers fishing with our La Paz fleet. More dorado showing up in the counts although, not alot of big fish just yet. Most fish are schoolie-sized 5-15 pounders with the occasional 20 pound mahi in the box. I expect this is just the opening round and the mahi fishing will get better. Lots of and lots of little fish around and sure, you could put a big dent in your ice chest fishing some of the trout-sized dorado, but what’s the fun in that? Hopefully, bigger and tougher guys will arrive as we move into summer.

For other species, our pangas are still finding some great marks of pargo mulatto and yellow snapper as well as some hefty trophy-cabrilla.

As well, we are also seeing more anxious billfish like sails and marlin and rooster fish in some of the coves up to 50 pounds.

2015 TAILHUNTER INTERNATIONAL / WESTERN OUTDOOR NEWS PANGA SLAM

It was one of our smaller groups in the 16 years we have held the event, but perhaps one of the funnest groups we’ve had here in my memory. The fishing could have been better. We’ve had better outings. But it’s hard to have had a better bunch. Or a more gratifying result. Please read to the end and find out the surprise ending!

Day 1 we fished Las Arenas and got into some nice wahoo and marlin. For some it was their firsts of those species. We didn’t have a scale to the beach, but biggest fish was probably Dave Lindell’s wahoo (Pendleton OR) or Dave Conklin’s wahoo (Spokane WA) . Tom Robinson from Orange Co. took his first marlin after a bruising 2 hour fight on a little Avet reel and released it to fight another day. That night we went with the group to Costa Restaurant at the marina for some great seafood and live dance music.

Our favorite alfalfa farmer, Craig Corda, holds up a wahoo from the first day.

Day 2 – We moved over to fish La Paz side and there were some school-sized dorado and rockies taken. Michele (“Michele with one “L”) Conklin had the biggest dorado of the day and their boat also had the most hook-ups. That night was taco party night at Tailhunters for the big feed.

Two wahoo and a jack crevalle among other fish that day plus two other wahoo lost for Michele and Dave Conklin.

Day 3 – No fishing! Party day! We joined up with Fun Baja and took the whole gang out to Espirito Santo Island for a day of snorkeling and scuba diving with the sealions and then to the island itself for a catered lunch, mass consumption of icy cold beer and some paddleboarding and kayaking. It was a spectacular day! The problem was we spend the WHOLE DAY out there having way too much fun and by the time we got back, everyone just wanted to kick it and take it easy so everyone was on their own for dinner and pretty much hung out at La Concha pool

In the most heroic act of the week, when one of the boat engines got a glitch and couldn’t make to closer to the beach, Pat McDonell and Dave Conklin swam the ice chest with 4 cases of icy beer to the beach about 200 yards away . Give give give!

Yes, go THAT way , David! The girls are waiting for you to bring the beer out to them!

Day 4 – Actual tournament day for the money! The other days were just warm-ups! $600 jackpot on the line. Everyone went charging! Unfortunately, so did the winds and waves which were ripping for the earlier part of the day. Fishing was scratchy at best for a handful of small dorado although Paul Csenar got his first marlin. Big fish turned out to be an 11.7 pounds skipjack caught by Bill Jubb! That was it. But again, with a giant cooler of beer on the beach and another with ice-cold watermelon slices, it turned into another beach party!

Dinner that night at Tailhunters for our all-you-can-eat Hawaiian Rib Dinner! Oh man…talk about sticky fingers and smackin’ lips!

Western Outdoor News Executive Editor Pat McDonell who is the best MC in the world…did our closing and passed out more swag to everyone. But then he awarded the $600 jackpot money to Bill Jubb…

And here’s the awesomeness:

Bil Jubb took all the money and he told everyone he was covering the drink tab. Then, he donated the rest of the winnings to FANLAP, which is one of our favorite charities here in La Paz! The balance of that amount of more than $400 is enough for two high school scholarships to pay for the expenses of two high school students for a year. (Here in Mexico, mandatory public school is only given until 9th grade…after that, the individual must fund further education themselves!). What an incredible ending which drew much applause and high-fives! Thanks to Bill for doing that.

But, that wasn’t all…upon departure, Dave and Malina Lindell (from Pendleton, OR) two of our frequent amigos here to Tailhunters left us another donation with enough to fund possibly another two scholarships! We are speechless and grateful beyond words. Blessed!

What a monster pig of a fish! In all my years have never seen a wahoo THIS FAT!!!! Tim McCrink with a huge wahoo caught on a rapala with Captain Mundo out’ve Muertos Bay yesterday. The fish is curved…it’s over 6 feet long! Estimates from captains and clients alike who were on the beach put the fish at anywhere fro 70-100 pounds.

Captain Armando put Ed Bird from Sacramento onto this good wahoo. Rich Keogh helps hold up the head! Great amigos and always good to see them down here!

Marrion Lawver and Uncle Ron Sr. with Ron’s marlin. Marrion is from Kansas and Ron hails from Washington on his first trip. The marlin was not able to be released.

Some good roosterfish action this week. From Oregon, Denny King, loves the light tackle. On his first trip, he did close to 12 different species of fish in 3 days. Rooster was released.

Captain Pancho with one of the funniest guys to be around. Jude “Big Boy” Martinez has himself a whopper-size pompano. They brought it over to Tailhunter Restaurant for tacos!

This is an amazing guy! Jake Van Hemelryck from Eagle Idaho was down for two weeks at the Se Habla La Paz Spanish Language immersion school knocking out some extra college credits towards his teaching degree. He had weekends off so he went fishing with Captain Rogelio with our Tailhunter La Paz fleet. No problem! He caught roosterfish, dorado, pargo, cabrilla and other species. Jake is pretty inspiring. He holds powerlifting and swimming records and swam for the U.S. Paralympic team. The fish didn’t have a chance.

Marlin were alot more active this week and alot of amigos had shots at them. Terry Biggs had this one going for a bit and sent me the photos. This one got away but great shots!

Mitch Embry dialed one in finally after 4 days of fishing and stepped up with this nice wahoo. Pictured here with Captain Armando and Ed Bird.

FISHING STRUGGLES TO COME BACK AFTER STORM BLANCA

La Paz – Las Arenas / Muertos Bay Fishing Report for Week of June 7-14, 2015

Well, we “survived” Hurricane/ Tropical Storm Blanca. I say “survived” because it was almost a non-event. I don’t want to scoff at the weather as it needs to be respected, but I think everyone in S. Baja was a bit nervous when Blanca appeared on the radar. Winds over 100 mph and 10-16 inches of rain were predicted and many folks in the state have yet to fully recover the devastating effects of “Odile” last September that tore the state apart.

In that regard, folks could be seen boarding up windows; hauling out their boats; stocked up on water and batteries, etc. Even us at Tailhunters, dismantled our restaurant and set up sand bags. Then, for 4 days, we watched and waited. And waited. And communally huddled before our computers and smart phones watching every bit of social media as the ominous storm approached.

Then…nothing really happened. Some big waves. A bit or strong rain (in some cases only minutes). And strong winds. And that was it in most of Southern Baja. Further north of La Paz, they got some heavier rains, but nothing biblical. In La Paz, there was some debris. Lots of dust. No flooding. For us we lost a day or two of fishing. And that was only because the port captain prevented boats from leaving the bay. For the most part, seas stayed flat and we could have fished. But, I understand the precaution.

When we did get back on the water, early in the week, it was with some trepidation. Fishing at Las Arenas had been pretty darned good . The wahoo bite had been off-the-charts. For La Paz, we just started to finally get into some nicer dorado.

Well, when we got back in the water after the storm, it wasn’t totally expected. Waters were green and cloudy. Water temperatures had plummeted 8-10 degrees from 80 to the low 70’s.

Fish were around. Our anglers saw them. But, they didn’t want to eat!

It took a few days, but with each passing day post storm Blanca, the waters cleaned up and fishing got just a little better. Not 100% back to previous conditions, but we started seeing some wahoo again. (some really BIG wahoo!) Billfish got a little more active. Dorado seemed to get hungrier as well. Our La Paz boats were finding some spots of small to medium dorado which was nice to see. It’s about time we see some better dorado! We even saw our largest dorado of the year which were 30-40 pounds. Inshore, some roosters were biting as well as yellow snapper, cabrilla and pargo. Still too early to be definitive, but signs are encouraging. There’s alot of variety around. Every day seems different.

Dustin Bremmer had only one day to fish and he made the most of it with this fat yellowfin tuna and also a wahoo with Captain Armando.

This should be on a Christmas card! Six-year-old Caleb Davis is genetically progammed to be a good fisherman. Dad runs a sportboat out’ve Orange Co. , California. Gramps is our amigo, James “Hawk” Davis who lives in La Ventana and is a stellar angler as well. Caleb rocked this big wahoo all on his own.

From Hawthorne CA, Candi and Mike Jimenez with Captain Armando did this nice wahoo with only 1 day to fish this past week. Nicely done.

From Sacramento, a really fun couple. Dani and her husband, Harry Gist, also got themselves a wahoo this week. Standing on the beach at Bahia de Los Muertos. They got a bunch of pargo and cabrilla as well on their 2nd day of fishing and spent a day snorkeling at the island with the sealion.

It was an incredible week for first timers and anglers who only had one day to fish! Dave Bosteter from Arizona only fished one day. He only caught ONE fish! But, check out his big striped marlin with Captain Pancho! He also did the fish on light tackle too! The fish could not be released.

Our son-in-law, Brian Reid, did a bit of damage this past week. He lives in Las Vegas AZ and this is one of his two wahoo he put in the tank off Cerralvo Island.

Our Sacramento amigos with Captain Victor, Henry and Becky Harvey managed to get a nice wahoo on but had several others almost to the boat. Henry also got himself his first marlin this week!

Our gal…also our daughter…Jessie Reid of Las Vegas. She’s funny. Slept on the panga all day. Woke up for 5 minutes when her rod went off. She hooked this nice wahoo and went back to siesta! She makes alot of things look easy. Love how she rolls.

STORM BLANCA IS A BUZZKILL!

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Bahia de Los Muertos Fishing Report for Week of May 31 to June 7, 2015

At the time you’re reading this, we’ll know what, if any effect, Hurricane/Storm Blanca will have done to us. I’m writing this about noon of Sunday trying to get this up and posted before we lose power. We already lost power a few last night for short perdiods. I’m hustling to write so excuse any typos!

As I write this, everyone is watching to see what will happen. We have been tracking this for days. It has been like watching a roller coaster ride because it has changed up and down by the hour.

Right now…The storm sits a couple of hundred miles south of us where is seems to vary between a dangerous Category 1 and 2. (It was up to to a 3 and 4). The whopper that hit Baja last year was a Cat 4-5 with winds close to 200 miles and hour. Named “Odile”, it’s fresh in our memories and many of us are still recovering so we’re all anxious to see what nature has in store. But, it’s coming.

As of this moment, they CLOSED CABO AIRPORT and the La Paz marinas have been closed for two days. If you’re coming down in the next few days, I would suggest you call your airlines. This will probably last through Tuesday. Check! As of right now, the La Paz Airport is open.

At the moment, predictions have the storm diminishing it’s effect on us here in La Paz. The eye of the storm has it going west and north instead of directly overhead. It will make landfall much further north on the Baja Peninsula and probably bring California some much needed rain. For us here in La Paz, we’re probably gonna get a few inches of rain today and tomorrow with some winds up to 60 MPH by tomorrow. It’s not like Odile last year, but not to be taken lightly.

It’s NOT a hurricane, but it’s a very strong TROPICAL storm

For sure . strong winds in the 20-40 mph category are predicted to blow Sunday, Monday and Tuesday which is much more problematic. Even though the sun will likely be out, anything in double digits will make it impossible to be out on the water for our panga fleets here in La Paz. Even if it’s safe, it’s not gonna be fun out there. Plus, our bite has been so great for wahoo and roosters and our dorado bite just hit stride so I’m anxious to see how the bite will be affected post-Blanca.

To the government’s credit, the CFE crews are already out and marshalled in front of Hotel Marina. These CFE guys and their big trucks saved us all last year when the big one hit us and many of us were out’ve power for several weeks. The CFE guys are the power company guys and boat loads of the landed after last year’s hurricane and it was like the marines had landed or the cavalry showed up! With no power, they’re no electricity. No cooking. No pumps to pump water. Nothing! The trucks are already here now and ready to go. We talked to one of the CFE guys last night and he said they are actually parking themselves at various hot spots ready to immediately tackle problems.

Anyway, nothing to do but wait and see. Last year, Odile took the same track and at the last minute turned inwards and kicked the hell outta lower Baja, after we all thought it was going to pass us up.

ELECTION DAY

Another sidebar story…Sunday…today is election day. NO ALCOHOL SALES IN LA PAZ are allowed. So, with the storm and all, we figured we might as well close the Tailhunter Restaurant Bar and also let our employees spend the day with their families and taking care of their homes.

So, I ran out to the market Saturday night to stock up on batteries, tape, canned good, etc. We are always prepared, but never hurts to have extras. Last year before Odile, no one seemed to pay much mind and got caught flatfooted. So, this year, everyone would be making a run of emergency supplies at the market.

I went to the market and there were PLENTY of supplies. However, everyone was buying ALL THE BEER they could get a hold of! People were more concerned with enough beer to get through election Sunday and in case stores are closed for several days afterwards! I have heard that some stores have sold out of all their beer already! Viva Mexico! LOL

I have run into several friends who bought lots of beer on Saturday and stocked up their ice chests. However, they ended up drinking it all up and now are in a panic now trying to find beer!

Anyway, here’s what’s been happening. It’s been a solid week!

LAS ARENAS/ MUERTOS BAY

Wow, that wahoo bite…not much to say except that in the last 3 weeks, we’ve gotten more wahoo than in the last 5 years combined. I hate to sound cocky but this has been incredible. Pangas are getting 1-5 wahoo per day. The only clients of ours not getting a wahoo are those that are fishing for something else; flyfishers; or folks who are hooking them but losing the speedsters. These fish are all quality 20-50 pounders!

We’re getting a little spoiled. Some of our anglers have no idea just how we’re rolling in gravy. They’re starting to complain! LOL

“I only got ONE wahoo today.”

“I just had TWO wahoo today. The other boats got more than me!”

Yikes! Hahahaha…what can ya do?

Besides the wahoo, we’re still getting decent numbers of those tasty white bonito (meat like tuna!) and rooster fish have been in the 20-40 pound class. Plus, we’re seeing pompano, jack crevalle, the occasional sierra (must be some cold water around), plus hooking a marlin or two as well as the marlin and sails are starting to wake up!

The bite diminished towards the end of the week on Thursday, Friday and Saturday as big rollers from the storm to the south started coming in and bait got harder to find. We stopped fishing the area and see how things pick up after the storm.

LA PAZ

Our Tailhunter La Paz Fleet has been consistent for action. Inshore stuff for pargo, cabrilla, snapper, amberjack, rooster fish, jack crevalle and bonito has produced 20-30 fish days with lots of released fish, but lots of fun battling these fish in the rocks.

The best news is late in the week we finally started seeing some larger schools of dorado that we’ve been waiting for. Fish are small to medium…5 to 15 pounders with many of the anglers releasing the smaller fish, but it’s encouraging to finally see the dorado moving in.

Also more billfish in the area as well which should only get better with so many more smaller dorado around.

We fished La Paz until late in the week when the Port Captain closed the port and prevented all watercraft from leaving!

WAHOO ROOSTERS AND ROCKIES CENTER STAGE

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay Fishing Report for Week of May 24-31, 2015

For the most part, great weather and great fishing conditions most of the week resulting in some pretty solid catches. Lots of sunshine and increasingly better looking water all-the-way-around helped our anglers put some bend in the rods for a 2nd straight week.

Our biggest problem was a scare that popped up on the radar about mid-week showing a big tropical storm headed our way that was going to bring rain and strong winds beginning this weekend. With so many folks still nervous about Hurricane Odile from last year and many people still smarting over the recovery, the last thing we need is a storm! As far as fishing is concerned, our bite has been so good the last two weeks, I surely wasn’t looking forward to ANYTHING that would mess up the waters or keep folks ashore! Had this storm hit us, it would have brought 2-4 days of intermittent rain.

However, the fishing gods smiled on us and other than some winds late in the week, the sun has continued to shine brilliantly in a cloudless sky and the storm moved off into the pacific without even casting shadow! Whew…

LAS ARENAS/ BAHIA DE LOS MUERTOS

That wahoo bite that kicked in two weeks ago continued again. As I said last week, I’ve never seen a wahoo bite like this here in our waters in the 20 years I’ve been down here in La Paz. Almost every day, each of our pangas got 1-4 wahoo and lost others. Most days, if a panga came back without a wahoo, it was because:

1. They weren’t trying for wahoo or

2. They lost the wahoo they hooked

I’ll let our amigo, Roger Thompson tell you best:

“We were on the water at 5:30 this morning and had our first wahoo on the boat by 6am. At 6:15, we had another. Next was a double hookup around 7am and we landed both fish. We also saw 1 giant free swimmer just under the boat while fighting these 2. We hooked 2 more wahoo and lost 1 just before 7:30. Hooked another around 8:15 and this one came unbuttoned 10 feet from the boat. I hate it when that happens! No more wahoo bites for an hour and decided we caused enough damage for one day so we stopped to reel in the Rapalas and head back to the ramp. I slowed down, put her into neutral, and shut it down…….then wham. The short one got slammed and the bonus fish was in the box after 10 minutes of high speed runs and wahoos!

I guess what I’m trying to say is it’s an early morning bite for sure. It reminded me of the “good ole days”!

These fish were all quality fish between 26 and 42 pounds. “

Some of our amigos who fished multiple days with us in the area actually got to the point where the didn’t want to fish for wahoo anymore! There were others who just didn’t want to take any more wahoo home and there were alot of very happy captains who were getting 1-3 wahoo as “gifts” to take home!

The other “fish” we’ve been doing pretty solidly on are the rooster fish. It’s not wide-open, but there’s some medium-sized 20-60 pound fish cruising around and if you wanted to catch a rooster, there was even-money that you had a good chance on any given day of hooking 1-2 fish. Way better than say, two weeks ago . All fish are getting released.

Also seeing a few more dorado in the area. I’m surprised there aren’t more around by this time of the season already. Normally, we’re thick with dorado by now!

LA PAZ

We had consistent fishing with our La Paz fleet headed straight out and working north of the city around Espirito Santo Island or around the corner between Tecolote and Las Cruces.

We are definitely seeing more dorado action with fish between 10-20 pounds at the largest, but again, I would have expected more dorado by this time.

The best bite has been inshore among the rocks. Good action on some really sweet pargo, yellow snapper, amberjack and big cabrilla. Lots of larger fish getting lost in the rocks.

We’re seeing a few more marlin around that are actually willing to bite. Several were hooked and lost.

In front of that awesome mustache is a beast of a wahoo! Behind the ‘stache, is Allan Sheppard from North Carolina who got in on the incredible wahoo bite we had this week. They were in the thick of it and actually left the fishing grounds so they could go chase marlin because the wahoo were so thick. They came back 3 hours later and the wahoo were still there!

Long time friends and visitors to us here in La Paz at Tailhunter, JD Drucker and Donna Drucker had quite a week. This was just ONE of the day the had! Four wahoo with Captain Victor.

La Paz -Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay Fishing Report for Week of May 17-24, 2015

What a difference a week makes! After several weeks of scratchy fishing, we had one of those weeks for the books. In twenty years here in La Paz, I have never seen a bite like this.

Wahoo like crazy. Wahoo became WOW-hooo! I’ll let my clients say it better:

“Every bait we threw in the water got wahoo!”

“They were free swimming all round the pangas!”

“I was hooked up and my buddy was hooked up…and there were two or three swimming around us looking for something to bite!”

“We hooked two and lost four. We wanted to try for a marlin so we went marlin fishing for 3 hours. We came back and hooked two more wahoo!”

“It was like watching giant mackerel swimming around in the blue water!”

“We could have caught 10 or 15 easy if we were better fishermen. What a blast!”

“I learned quickly NOT to put my thumb on the reel when a wahoo runs. It’s not like a salmon! I fried my thumb off!”

LAS ARENAS / MUERTOS BAY

Whatever happened was epic. Two areas. One at the south end of Cerralvo Island on the high spot and then the other right outside Bahia de Los Muertos just off the rocks a hundred yards! Small mackerel…baby sardines…trolled Rapalas…they got bit. A few days were better than others, but there were wahoo everyday this week. I hope I don’t jinx it.

These fish were running 20-50 pounds and the crazier part was that some of the rookie guys didn’t realize the prize they had caught…and GAVE AWAY ALMOST ALL THEIR FISH TO CAPTAINS OR ANYONE ELSE WHO WANTED A PIECE!!! It was nuts.

In addition to the wahoo…well…we got the rooster fish back in the fold. Not as good as its as two or three weeks ago, but at least we got some to the boat. The fish ran 15-45 pounds on the average and all got released. But, for alot of guys (and gals), it was one to check off the bucket list.

Anyway…whew…a much better week. Not everyone caught fish every day like this, but this was the place to go for the larger fish this week.

LA PAZ

For all the bigger fish, Las Arenas was where the action was happening. For the most action, our La Paz fleets did better. Usually, it’s reversed. Las Arenas has the variety and action while La Paz holds the larger fish.

But, what we had this week was some really really great inshore action along the reefs and islands. Some sizable pargo (yellow snapper and barred pargo) and some good-sized cabrilla plus some late-season sierra provided some solid action most days. There were also some rooster fish caught and released and we had a few marlin hookups as well with fish getting released or breaking off. There’s some dorado out there, but not in the numbers we’d expect this time of year. More expected as the waters warm up.

Diana Statman tuna pancho tags small 5-15

Diana Statman from Marina del Rey CA had never fished in salt water and was a little nervous going out on “that little panga.” But, with Captain Pancho from the Tailhunter fleet, she had a bait in the water only a few minutes and got slammed! Her husband Jay was still rigging up. He got bit shortly after and they had a double hookup going. Here she is trying to hold the big fish still for the camera.

Nice rooster for Allen Burgess from Kansas wit Captain Jorge from the Tailhunter Fleet. Caught and released off Bahia de Los Muertos. He also hooked and released a 250 pound blue marlin after a 3 hour battle on 40 pound test and a spinning rod.

Pretty typical of the nice bite around Espirito Santo Island right now for some great pargo and cabrilla and some of the best fish on the grill or plate. Captain Joel with our good amigo, John Drucker.

From Washington, Nyle Miyamoto, with one of our early season dorado no the beach at Muertos. Waters are warming and we expect to see more dorado anytime now.

Might be the last yellowtail of the season and caught by Brett Fair and Travis Craig from Portland OR off Espirito Santo Island on big mackerel.

Normally, he’s out white-water paddling, but Mike Dietzman from Oregon was just with us on his first time salt water fishing and he hooked into this nice sailfish north of La Paz.

Hard to beat for just getting pulled around on a fishing rod, there’s some big schools of jack crevalle running around right now. Great on light tackle! From Oregon, Joel Ulam and Brad Carlson with a pair or “toros.”

With Captain Chito trying to hook up another bait, Dave Cummins has a fresh one on the gaff. Nice bull dorado off Espirito Santo Island . Check out the great colors!

Captain Chito with Jay Statman from Marina Del Rey CA and two great yellowfin tuna out’ve Bahia de los Muertos. Jay and his wife were double hooked and had fish going when a boat load of spearfishing free divers jumped right in the water 10 yards off our panga despite being asked not to do it. That shut off the bite. C’mon…show some courtesy. It’s a huge ocean! Still a nice catch!

Mmmmm…one of the best eating fish here! Travis Craig with a huachinango (red snapper pargo) he pulled out of the rocks near Espirito Santo Island.

An unusual catch, but they are around here! Donna Drucker hooked this 80 pound hammerhead and fought it to the boat so it could be released.

ANGLERS WORK HARD FOR FISH…AGAIN…

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay Fishing Report for Week of May 10-17, 2015

It was another tough week after waters and conditions settle down from the strange crazy winds and waves we got the week before that just turned everything over and around. It brought in cooler, greener water plus residual winds and it’s taking quite a few days for things to settle down So, alot of this week was just scratchy fishing and hat’s off to all our anglers who kept grinning and kept patient and brought the smiles. I won’t lie, the fishing was way off what it should be this time of year.

There were some great highlights to be sure. But, alot of the week, it was either tough to find bait because of the waters or winds or, when we did find it, the guys had to work hard for their fish. However, with each day of better weather, the conditions were coming back. Each day the waters calmed and so did the winds and little-by-little the fishing seemed to inch better.

Las Arenas

Probably the toughest fishing the last two weeks. There’s bunches of little dorado around that are entertaining for awhile, but I mean “really little” five pounders, if that. Good for a fish or two to be released, then most anglers move on unless they’re playing and having fun with the light tackle. There’s also some good schools of white bonito around. Again, lots of fun and they’re getting 5-10 per day. These aren’t the “bad bonito” or skipjack. These are the whites that make great eating and can fool anyone on a plate that it’s actually tuna! The meat is not dark, but rather great pink meat perfect for sashime and cooks up white as well.

The highlights of the week for our guys…rooster fish. Hard to come by this week with limited smaller baits so we only had the big ladyfish to use, but that produced a few of the bigger 30-50 pounders along the shores. But, the bite was definitely off.

As well, we had some wahoo bites, but no fish landed. All from the south end of Cerralvo Island and near Punta Perrico. But, the wahoo are there. (Just as I posted this Sunday night, two of our guys landed 2 forty-pound fish and lost a bigger one!)

We also had more marlin swimming around and one big-time hookup by Al Burgess from Kansas. Allen hooked a fish estimated by our captain at 250 pounds! But, even more amazing, Al was using 40 pound test AND A SPINNING ROD! He battled the fish solo for 3 solid hours with a bad back and legs and they said the big fish bulldogged them and barely ever jumped…the worst and strongest kind…smart fish that don’t waste energy jumping around! It pulled the panga with 3 anglers and a captain in circles the entire time.

Sorry there’s no photos but what happened is the guys burned up all the batteries and memory during the battle! When the fish was finally alongside the boat, no one had any memory or batteries! Only great stories. And the fish was released!!! Well done!

The other highlight was a nice jag of 30-40 pound tuna. Another good story.

Diana Statman had never fished in salt water before! First time down here too, although husband, Jay, is a long time fisherman and has been down to La Paz many times before. Diana gets a bait and gets it in the water and minutes later she’s bit!!! Tuna on!!! Husband Jay is still rigging up! Then, Jay gets bit! Doubles on!

But what happens…some private spear fishermen pull up not 10 yards from their panga and jump in the water! Despite being asked to move somewhere else…they jump in anyway. The tuna get pulled in, but bite over! C’mon guys…some courtesy. It’s a big ocean!!!

LA PAZ

This is surprisingly where most of our action took place this week. And it wasn’t our usual bite.

Of all things, with the crazy weather, our captains have found some good spots for some big pargo and cabrilla near the islands and some of the reefs. It’s providing some pretty solid action and they’re losing some big big fish to the rocks and inexperience. Most of the fish that are coming back are delicious 3-5 pounders, but some great stories of 10-20 pound fish lost to the rocks. Plus some big amberjack up to 50 pounds caught at the north end of Cerralvo and larger ones being lost…some right next to the boat up to 70 pounds.

We did get a few yellowtail. Normally, we should be getting more this time of year, but waters are warming fast so I think the yellowtail we are getting might be the last of the season.

A few dorado around but of the larger variety and we should see more every week and we also hooked a few marlin and sails this week as well.

Again, not spectacular and not our usual. But every day seems a little better as long as the weather holds!

Big tuna for our buddy, Rick Hosmer who tag-teamed with John Nagy and Captain Mundo at the south end of Cerralvo Island. They fought this fish for almost 2 hours on 50 pound test. Flurries of fast movers have been seen at north and south ends of Cerralvo lately!

From New Mexico, on his last day of fishing, Terry Price finally landed his roosterfish on the flyrod . They were just outside of Muertos Bay. The fish was released.

The ladies really did well this week. From the Oregon area, Dorothy Murata with Captain Jorge busts a big smile with her roosterfish she took on a live sardine with our Las Arenas fleet. The fish was released.

A good day with 2 wahoo and a marlin to show, David from La Paz holds up one of his wahoo. Thanks to Hawk for the great photo. The north and south ends of Cerralvo have been hot spots for the speedsters.

INSHORE FISHING HIGHLIGHTS THE WEEK

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay Fishing Report for Week of April 26-May 3, 2015

It was a good week on all counts this week. Weather-wise and fishing conditions were more consistent and just-like-that fishing seemed to be more consistent as well. With winds not quite as erratic and seemingly more spots of warm water around, fishing leveled out too. More days of action all-the-way-around which no one seemed to mind.

Las Arenas

Lately, this has surely been the place for some variety. Nothing wrong with that. If you want a shot at rooster fish, you have your best shot at the early season roosters. Most of the fish are that 20-pound class, but some larger up to 40 pounds have been hooked. The areas are in the usual spots…just around the beaches at the lighthouse and also just off the Punta Perico rocks. Heading south from Bahia de Los Muertos towards Boca de Alamo, there are some larger roosters as well, especially along the shallow rocky areas incredibly close to shore.

In the same areas, there’s some big schools of feisty jack crevalle and big pompano as well. Related to the roosters, they share that same tenacious bad attitude. Just like their cousins, the jacks are also not good for eating so everyone releases them, but for sheer fun, it’s hard to beat them. On the other hand, if you stick a pompano, they’re a real treat on the grill or as sashimi!

Offshore (for us, “offshore” means 100 yards out!), there’s schools of bonito. We have several species of bonito and if you get the “toothed bonito” not only are they good fighters, but your captain will tell you to keep them as they are some great eating and not like the skipjack and Mexican bonito that have dark strong-tasting meat and get released. But, you can hook a dozen-a-day of these things.

Additionally, we’re seeing more dorado here and there with larger sizes becoming more pre-dominant. More marlin showing which is encouraging. As waters get warmer, I’m sure they’ll turn on. Plus, there’s some wahoo close in near Punta Perico and just this side of the south side of Cerralvo Island. Rapala X-Wraps in 15’s and 30’s in dark colors are producing the best bites.

La Paz

Surprisingly, the inshore action has been quite better than I would have expected. Honestly, the yellowtail bite seems to have gone under so-to-speak. I shut down earlier this year than I would have thought. Blame it on the warm water.

However, the rest of the action inshore has rocked for amberjack, pargo, cabrilla, jack crevalle and some assorted rooster fish. There’s some inshore spots where some of our clients caught and released as fast as they could go. Plus losing lots of fish to the rocks as well and had a blast.

In the blue water, more dorado showing up and we’ve missed a few shots at sunning marlin and sailfish too and had a few wahoo hookups also that were dropped.

There’s a little honey hole hotspot just outside of Bahia de Los Muertos that’s just off the rocks that has produced some really nice wahoo this season and has to surprise folks about just how close to shore it is! Don White, our Oregon amigo and Captain Pancho pulled this wahoo there late this week!

Big big jack crevalle for Debbie White who always seems to get a large fish every time she fishes with us! Not too many fish like the jack that can rip it up. The Mexican name for them is “TORO” which means “bull” for good reason!

It was another pretty good week for roosterfish for our anglers who fished out’ve Las Arenas/ Bahia de Los Muertos. Tyler Lyon with a pretty fresh one. The fish was released. Tyler got this one on a flyrod.

Gary Tsunoda was totally dialed in on pargo and red hot on the bite! Colorful fish!

MIXED WEEK FOR WEATHER and FISHING

La Paz – Las Arenas / Muertos Bay Fishing Report for Week of April 19-26, 2015

Weather and fish-wise, it was an up-and-down week. I think we’re in that “transition” season when it’s not really winter and it’s not quite springtime. There are areas of warm water. There are areas of cooler water. There are areas where the surface water is cold and the water below is warm…and vice versa. We have sunny warm days that look like postcards and we have cloudy windy days and even some showers on other days that aren’t quite so hunky dory. And that’s the kind of week it was.

Consequently, we have several things going on with the fish. On one hand, there’s alot of variety. Cooler water fish like amberjack, pargo, cabrilla and sierra are still around. But, in the same area, you might get rooster fish, bonito, marlin, dorado and wahoo. That’s a good thing. Variety is nice.

On the other hand, if you’re coming to target a certain species, that species might not be biting on that day. Or, due to changes in the weather, the conditions just aren’t that great. Then, there are other days when everything seems to go off. You just gotta get out on the water and take a shot.

LAS ARENAS / MUERTOS BAY

This is still the area for the most action and the most variety. This is where I’ve been sending more of the first-timers or families or when kids are here. There’s no shortage of stuff to catch most days. Get bent. Have fun. Pull on some fish! Just go have a ball. There’s rooster fish; some dorado; a shot at wahoo; maybe a marlin; trigger fish; sierra; pargo; cabrilla…and lots of bonito.

A word on these bonito before you turn your nose up at it. These are “bonito dientero.” Toothed bonito…also called white bonito. In addition to being tough fighters, the meat is pink and white not dark like the bonito you might be used to. It cooks up great and we encourage folks to keep some. After it’s cooked or made into sashimi, most folks can’t tell that it’s not tuna. Tastes pretty good!

LA PAZ

I’m a bit worried. I think the waters have gotten a bit too warm now. The mackerel are hard to come by and without the larger baits and with the warmer temperatures, it seems the yellowtail have gone deep or gone away. Not much in the way of yellowtail this week. Got a few, but they were small. If they are still around, they only seem to be interested in the larger baits or iron.

However, there’s still some big fish around. Trophy barred pargo and cabrilla, amberjack and chunky rooster fish are around. Also seeing more and more sailfish and marlin as well.

WHALESHARKS

This week there were 3-8 whalesharks each day in the bay to swim with.

Wow! Our Captain Armando holds the pointy-end of a big fat wahoo that Gary Tsunoda of Las Vegas popped just outside of Bahia de Los Muertos. Our amigo, Gary, had a great week of fishing with a number of species and some awesome trophys ,but this one was a gem! Good week for wahoo…and some were very very close to shore!

Our best week of the year for roosterfish! Some days our anglers got 3-6 roosterfish each panga an many were very close to shore and not too far from the beach. Bait worked best, but even our flyfishers got them as well with almost all the fish, like this one from Jorge Romero headed back to live, grow and fight another day!

You’re probably not gonna see too many pretty wahoo with such perfect coloring as this one caught by our amigo, Tom Brown, who owns Big Left Turn Yacht Management here in La Paz. Boy, did he have a good day that started right off the bat with this awesome yahoo that literally looks like it came from being airbrushed! They also caught giant pompano, dorado and a huge sierra. Captain Pancho gets in on the photo. Great shot!

Lots of the fish that Tom and his buddy, Tim, caught went towards a big fish party they held for 13 amigos that same night at our Tailhunter Restaurant that included, ceviche, Hawaiian marinated poke, battered fish tacos and mahi mahi en chile poblano sauce!

Nothing better than fish that was swimming in the morning and dinner at night! Tom’s dorado was prepared with our award-winning chile poblano sauce!

Whoaaa…lift that thing for the photo, Roger! Roger Thompson rocked it big time with this nice striper…a huge one this week. They tried to revive it insuccessfully, so they donated the meat to various families. Roger never gets skunked.

Love this photo! Flyfishers ALWAYS seem to know how to pose and take good photos. Tyler Lyon from Utah spent a few days with us and his flyrod doing great with his hand-tied flies. “I couldn’t keep the fish off of the fly! he told me! He got into several nice roosterfish like this one. He told me at one point, “I saw a school of 70-pounders go cruising by!” He released all fish.

Dave Henderson from the Los Gatos CA area was with us for his first La Paz fishing trip and put the wood to a nice wahoo on his 2nd day!

Yes! And dorado too! Captain Armando takes the photo op on the beach at Bahia de los Muertos with Gary and Lois Tsunoda, our Las Vegas amigos! It ended up as sashime at our Tailhunter Restaurant.

Wow! Now THAT’S a big pompano! It was a great week for pompano…cousins to the jack crevalle, roosterfish and yellowtail. They taste great and good runs of them come through about this time of year. But this one is like a pizza pie plate! Tim rock this bad boy just outside of Bahia de Los Muertos.

Lois Tsunoda always wanted a big pargo and this was her first. It wasn’t her last. She got several during the week. Captain Alfredo with our Tailhunter La Paz fleet lends a hand. Big old fat fish. The head is great for soup!

Many of our anglers bring their fish in to have us cook it at our Tailhunter Restaurant on the La Paz malecon waterfront.

Garrett Sills was another of our anglers on his first trip with Tailhunters. He’s got his hands one of those nice pompano that was chewing all week. Captain Gerardo in the photo as well.

Alaska in the house. Gordy Robertson, who guides up in Sitka, Alaska holds up another nice rooster like about the size we were getting all week. They get bigger!

ROOSTERFISH AND WAHOO HIGHLIGHT STRANGE WEEK!

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay Fishing Report for Week of April 12-19, 2015

It wasn’t a great week of fishing, but for certain species it was VERY good fishing. Pesky early spring winds and even a thundershower hampered anglers; made the seas a bit bouncy some days; and thwarted efforts at getting bait some days. So that was no help.

But, overall, it wasn’t bad. Thankfully, rooster fish and pargo carried the day for many of our anglers who caught their first or largest of the species.

La Paz Fishing

Here’s where the winds played the most havoc. Especially in the nights and early mornings. With the mornings a bit blustery about 1/2 the week, it made getting the big mackerel difficult to jig for or purchase. And mackerel are what the big yellowtail like to chew. Consequently, our yellowtail counts were quite a bit down this week.

However, when the mackies were in the bait tank, the fish bit pretty well around Espirito Santo Island. The problem is that so many fish were lost! I would say that about 3 out of every four yellowtail took the anglers right back to the rocks! So, fishing was good. It was the “catching” that was problematic. Some of the fish ran 15-40 pounds that I did see so there was a nice range of fork tails.

One nice bonus were the nice barred pargo (pargo mulato) that were brought in. I mean, these were PIG fish! Just big old fat nasty bad attitude pargo that busted alot of lines and bent the rods. The ones that did get in were 10-20 pounders. One of our clients had us bag up the head for soup and the head alone weighed 5 pounds!

I’m a little worried that with the weather and water getting warmer that we’re already moving away from our cooler water species like the yellowtail and the season maybe be diminishing. I’ve been wrong before. We’ll have to wait and see what the coming weeks bring. I’m sure we’ll get a few more windy times coming up!

Las Arenas/ Bahia de los Muertos (Suenos)

Again, like previous weeks, this is where the variety lies. If you want big fish, but fewer fish, we have our folks fish La Paz. If you just wanted fun grab-bag action and never knowing what you would hook then Las Arenas/ Muertos is where we’d put you. Not kidding…if you add in all the bonito you wanted plus pargo, cabrilla, jack crevalle, sierra, plus fish that busted off…it could easily be a 20-30 fish day!

But the really fun thing were the “bonus fish.” The weekly stars were the pompano and rooster fish that really took off. Especially, the exotic rooster fish. Nothing really really big, but some days each of our pangas would land 3-5 roosters very close to shore that went 10-30 pounds. Larger 30-50 pounders were seen as well! Our flyfishers really enjoyed themselves on the pez gallo! In those same areas, their cousins the pompano made their first good appearance of the season and did great for flyfishers and light tackle guys on these great eating fish.

Tuna were seen, but none hooked but we did get into some nice wahoo at the south side of Cerralvo Island that ate the dark Rapalas and several marlin were hooked and released. Plus we had some amberjack biters as well. Great variety!

WHALESHARKS

Every day, we’ve got 5-10 whalesharks in the bay and folks are having a blast swimming with them!

Lift that baby! Sergio Rodriguez from Santa Barbara hooked this hefty thick yellowtail while still pretty much inside the La Paz Bay near Balandra Beach!

It’s gotta be the great glasses and the high-vis shirt! Aaron Beckord from Oregon gets big smiles with Captain Joel and a huge roosterfish they caught and released near Espirito Santo Island. This day, they caught two roosters and released both. Check out the flat seas!

What a story. School-teacher Mindy Pollock from Orofino Idaho spent some spring break time with us in La Paz and had some big fish over 3 days fishing. On her last day fishing with Captain Boli, handful of nice yellowtail got away, but her LAST fish she hung on! It produced this huge 90-pound amberjack off Espirito Santo Island! Well done!

Love this photo of soon-to-be, Doctor Aaron Beckord who starts his residency at UCLA but took time for a quick trip to La Paz that produced some good fishing including this great photo of one of his big yellowtail.

Joel Puente brought his son fishing and told us, “We don’t need any big fish. Just some “action.” The 12-year-old, Ben shows off his “action” including dorado, cabrilla, skipjack, pargo and another 10 or so fish the released. Happy guys! They are from El Monte CA.

Proudly sporting his “Bass Knuckles” t-shirt, Dan Hypse with one of his yellowtail out’ve La Paz. Earlier they hooked a huge 200 pound manta ray they fought and lost after a 2 hour battle!

He loves to flyfish! Tyler Lyon from Utah spent a few days with us and his flyrod and had a ball with his hand-tied flies taking multiple species including bonito like this…roosterfish…cabrilla…ladyfish…pargo and sierra. (See the photo of Captain Moncho below).

A whopper of a jack crevalle. There’s a reason the Mexican name for them is “toro” (bull). Susie Waters from Orange Co, CA battled this tough guy for a photo then released him.

Tyler Lyon (2 photos above) released all the fish he caught on his flyrod except this one which he gave to Captain Moncho to whip up some great ceviche! Sierra show us that cold water fish are still hanging out.

Rod Brown had too many good photos during his trip not to post one more. Our amigo from Alaska fishing with our Tailhunter Captain Boli, rocked this nice yellowtail north of La Paz Bay.

FISH MIX IT UP UNDER WEEK OF CLOUDY SKIES

La Paz – Las Arenas / Muertos Bay Fishing Report for Week of April 5-12, 2015

Hopefully, you weren’t here for the sunshine this week. Really weird week of weather. Temperature-wise, it was very comfortably moderate, but what happened to the sunshine. It was overcast and gray almost all week which didn’t bode well for folks still trying to catch some rays for spring break and late Easter vacations so I felt badly for them. As you read this, there’s actually a small chance of rain by the weekend for a few hours. Then, it clears up for next week so hopefully back to normal.

Anyway, fishing conditions weren’t bad. A little wind, but nothing drastic. Bait was good for both our Las Arenas and La Paz fleets so right there that’s always a good start to kick off the day knowing that we’ve got live bait which is the life blood of our fishing style here. Last year with El Nino, bait was hard to come by for pretty much all of Baja. But this year, we’ve got sardines for our Las Arenas guys and La Paz has a mix, mostly of mackerel, but also some caballitos and and sardines as well.

So, here goes…

LAS ARENAS/ MUERTOS BAY

We actually got some sunshine there relatively speaking this week. The fishing produced some good action. The wahoo had been going nicely, but none were boated this week although there were some fish that were dropped. However, this is our area to go if you were looking for some action and variety.

This week we had some first timers and family so this was great to get them bent…for some of them…the first time ocean fishing. Nothing huge to speak of, but what a variety. You never knew what the catches would be each day. To give you an example on a single day between several of our pangas we got:

1. Dorado

2. Roosterfish

3. Barred pargo

4. Yellow Snapper

5. Jack crevalle

6. Cabrilla (seabass)

7. Skipjack

8. Bonito (lots of them!)

9. Ladyfish

10. Pompano

11. Dog tooth snapper

And that was just ONE day! Plus, add in the lost wahoo and also a lost marlin and there were some cool fish out there to hook onto.

We also had our first flyfishers of the year as well. I’m always a bit leery this early in the season for flyfishing because you never know about the wind, but our flyfishers got roosters, jacks, bonito and ladyfish and had a blast.

LA PAZ

While not showing as much variety as Las Arenas/ Muertos, our anglers who fished out’ve La Paz got the larger fish. More quality for sure.

Around Espirito Santo Island, there’s several spots that glowed nicely for yellowtail. Fish were running 15-30 pounds and were eating the mackerel as well as the iron. Quite a few fish lost to inexperience, and also, I’m sure the bite would’ve been better, but there was alot of traffic out there because lots of folks are still on vacation. Here in La Paz, spring break is actually two weeks long so there were lots of families out on the water as well as fishermen. By next week, it should calm down a bit better. The fish are definitely there.

In addition to the yellowtail, the same area is also holding some nice amberjack, pargo and hefty cabrilla. Some of the beaches and coves have been good spots to look for roosters with most about 40 pounds or so.

We’re seeing more marlin north of town as the waters get warm and I’ve got reports of bits of sargasso weed starting to break looks and start floating so that’s also a good sign for the dorado to move in.

WHALESHARK WATCH

Yes! They are still in the bay! Our clients are swimming with 3-10 of the “baby” whalesharks almost every day in the shallow water. Most of the babies are 10-20 feet long! Great trip!
