STARTING TO FEEL LIKE SUMMER FISHING AT LAST!

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay/ Suenos Bay Fishing Report for Week of May 26-June 2, 2023

SHORT ATTENTION SPAN FISHING REPORT

WEATHER – Warming up.  Still very very cool and breezy in the mornings and evening but sunny and pretty most days into the high 80’s and low 90’s.  Very comfortable time to be here.

WATER – Definitely clearing up now that the winds are diminishing.  More blue water.  Sargasso weeds building up north of town which draws in the dorado and billfish.

FISHING (Scale of 1-10) – 6

SPECIES CAUGHT THIS WEEK – barred pargo, pargo liso, yellow snapper, dog-tooth snapper, cabrilla, jack crevalle, bonito, striped marlin, wahoo, dorado, yellowtail, amberjack, pompano, trevally, triggerfish, rainbow runners

LAS ARENAS FISHING – Definitely the spot to get the most species and variety.

LA PAZ FISHING – Better for the most dorado mostly but inshore are the usual, pargo, cabrilla, rockfish.

MEXICAN MINUTE LA PAZ VIDEO REPORT

THE BIG PICTURE and the REST of the STORY…

Right off the rocks, Todd Beckman from Vancouver WA got his first and biggest roosterfish with Captain Gerardo. It’s a big fatty! The fish was released.

Load of YFT…yellowfin tuna off Cerralvo Island for Andy Harrison and Joe Vondrak who have been with us many years and had a great 3 days.

Oh man…that’s alot of bull! Dorado that is! Chris Salanga on his first trip with us shows off two of his big bull dorado plus there’s another one on the table. But, he only has 2 hands!

Steve Bryan from Seattle, is our roosterfish king. He comes every year for 2 weeks to fish for big roosters and has been here a week and taken about a half-dozen big fish…so far! Other photos of his roosters are in this report. Steve releases all his roosters

Matt and his dad Jason Correia from San Diego started off their 3 days fishing with a super variety of fish with Captain Gerardo. On the cutting table, I see yellowtail, rainbow runner, cabrilla, snapper and pargo!

Kolby Zipperer from Colorado with his buddy Robbie Scales says it’s a “catch of a lifetime” with this striped marlin off Las Arenas. He was hunting the tuna schools when this striper hit the baits. The fish was not able to be released.

Jan and Chris Sommer from Orange Co. CA took home a nice load of fish over 3 days like this full table of dorado and snapper!

Two of the nicest folks…Dave and Diane Kosnowsky…from Washington State always do well fishing with us and show of a couple of dorado they caught with Captain Alfredo with our La Paz Fleet.

First one is a trophy! Matt Correia took this roosterfish not to far off the Las Arenas point and released it!

All the way from North Carolina, Emmett Ball was with Captain Victor when he hooked this colorful bull dorado.

Katie Olson lives up in the Sierra Mountains near Mammoth CA and has been our sweet amiga for many years. This lady knows how to fish and has fished all over the world! Her last day she got  an box full of limits of dorado north of La Paz including a couple of legit bulls.

This is Johnny Stone…always fun to have him down from San Diego and he always gets fish every year like this double-fist of dorado from near Espirito Santo Island

Todd Beckman says he must have caught about a dozen species fishing all week with us. This table alone shows trevally, rainbow runners, snapper, pargo, cabrilla and there might even be a triggerfish buried in there as well!

The “right kind” for Jeff Correia on this legit roosterfish for a quick photo and release.

Steve Bryan with another big catch-and-release roosterfish. He is still fishing a few more days as I write this, but I think he has 7 big fish from last week. All released.

Captain Boli gives Jan Sommer a hand and a gaff with another dorado in the box! That’s Espirito Santo Island in the back north of La Paz. Check that flat ocean!

We call this a good start to a week of fishing. Dave and Diane again with some great eating pargo, snapper and even a little yellowtail in there!

Captain Armando is not small. He just looks that way next to Jon Eide and John Vondrak posing with a table of yellowfin tuna.

It might not be the heaviest dorado of the week, but boy…it sure has to be the “longest” dorado of the week and definitely the biggest dorado Steve Bryan has caught in all his years fishing with us. It’s still a beast!

It’s Doreen’s birthday and she has a pretty nice rack of fish on the cutting board to pose with including yellow snapper and some trophy cabrilla.

That’s alot of fish to clean! But, Rey Salanga and nephew Chris had a great day and great week of fishing with super variety like this!

Keaton Lesnik and his dad only had 2 days to squeeze in on a quick turn-around trip, but rocks the fish with dorado, cabrilla, snapper, pargo and yellowtail.

Captain Jorge with Jim Elrod and his big dorado!

Chris Salanga and the magic touch for big bull dorado all week!

The dorado fishing north of La Paz ramped up nicely for fish like Jason Correia’s that he put in the boat.

Chris, Captain Pancho and a mess of football tuna to get on ice!

________________________________

We are still not quite up-to-speed with where we should be with the fishing but it sure has improved tremendously over the last 2 weeks or so from what we had in April and May!

This all has to do with the weather.  It’s still chilly and breezy in the mornings, but overall the air temps have improved and we’re now in the high-80’s and low 90’s.  Waters have cleared up and we’re finding more blue waters now.  Winds have abated tremendously.

And the fishing has improved as well.

Still a tremendous amount of variety with cold water species like yellowtail, sierra, amberjack, pargo, snapper, rainbow runners and others still in the fish catches with some good sized catches and trophy fish if you want to stay fishing over the rocks and reefs.  This can be all-day fun and action.

However, it’s the other species that are really starting to take off a bit and we’re hopeful it will continue to improve.

Dorado, for one, started showing up in bigger numbers about 2 weeks ago.  Most were school-sized 5-12 pounders. If you found the right school, you could take limits very quickly of eager fish with many smaller fish getting thrown back.

However, the larger models started to make their presence known with with in the 20-40 pound class some some perhaps larger that got unbuttoned or broke lines.

North of La Paz, the sargasso weed patches are starting to form up which is good news to bring in more dorado to the area.

Additionally, it looks like the waters have warmed up enough that the marlin are finally feeding.  For weeks they have been sunning on the surface oblivious to everything.  This week, however, we’re getting some fish willing to finally go!  Blue marlin around Cerralvo Island as well as striped marlin in several areas are now showing up with several hooked, landed and released.   The same areas are also producing some wahoo hook-ups although this past week nothing was landed.  We know the fish are there!

Likewise, with each week, we seem to get more of the large trophy roosterfish.  The smaller 5-10 pounders have been around for weeks, but only the last two weeks are we seeing the bigger models move in to feed on the large ladyfish that have moved into the beach areas as well.  So the big roosters are following their food source.

The nicest surprise were the football yellowfin tuna that popped up for several days.  These were fun-sized 8-15 pounders that put on a nice show. Not big enough to hurt anyone, but alot of fun bending rods and a real treat.  We hope this is a good sign of the start of a tuna season.

We got a full moon this week.  It will be interesting to see how that affects things.  Last month it put the brakes on things, but that was also because we had big winds and strong tides and currents.  We don’t have those right now.  Fingers crossed.

That’s my story!

ACTION IMPROVES AS WINDS DIMINISH

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay/ Bahia Suenos Fishing Report for Week of April 17-24, 2023

MEXICAN MINUTE LA PAZ FISHING VIDEO FISHING REPORT

THE BIG PICTURE and the REST of the STORY…

The pargo or schooling and spawning in the shallow and exciting to see but real horses to try to pull out’ve the rocks. However, Mike Luna from Utah got this big guy out while fishing with Captain Victor! They are often willing to bite ,but most are lost because of sharp teeth and scales and they head back to the rocks! Nice catch!

We’ve know Cole Chavira since he was about 3 feet tall. He’s from the San Diego area and an excellent angler who has been in La Paz a zillion times. He picked up this roosterfish on the east side of Espirito Santo Island. Nice to see the roosters start to move in. The fish was released.

Our amigo, Doctor Art Flippin, had just one day to fish and was drifting the shallows over the rocks fishing for cabrilla and pargo and got surprised by this nice bull dorado. Art looks kinda happy! He did also get pargo, jacks, cabrilla and rainbow runner as well.  Art lives in Colorado.

Big smile from Sophia with a tasty barred pargo ready for the fish box. Tough fighting fish, but great eating!

Captain Victor has a smile as he tries to help Rita Luna with her rainbow runner. Cousins to yellowtail, the fish are schooling up over the shallow areas right now and make great sashime and cooked up as well.

Our long-time amigo, Mark Bonsack from Washington comes down several times a year and is an excellent angler. He had just one day to fish, but rocked it with two hefty pargo liso. Tough to pull out’ve the rocks and most fish are lost. As a matter of fact, Mark says they broke off 4 others!

I think I’m coming over for fish tacos. Our amigo, Jimmy Williams was with Phil Desautels and Phil Perrone and I see dorado, ca brilla, pargo and yellow snapper on the table. They got hit by the winds, but these guys have experience and were able to hide in a cove and found a honey hole of fish!

East side of Cerralvo Island is a light tackle mecca. Art Flippin has a slugger jack crevalle he caught and released. The jacks are cousins to the roosterfish and fight just as hard, but don’t have the “mohawk” dorsal fin.

Mike Luna with Captain Victor on the beach. Check out the two nice pargo liso and the rainbow runner on the table, but the HUGE palometa (trevally) on the table is also a trophy fish!

It’s all about the wind.   It’s been that way all winter.

But finally, after a horrendous few months, the winds seem to be diminishing somewhat.  Fortunately, during those crazy rough months, I warn folks about the winds so we don’t have too many anglers.   But this week, the season started to kick in just in time as the winds cut back back on us a bit to allow for some decent fishing.

Early in the week, we got into quite a variety of fish.

It looks like the big pargo have come inshore to spawn.  These tough fish are schooling over the rocks and are difficult fighters but great sport.  Even the smaller 5-10 pounders can be brutally frustrating with their sharp teeth and scales plus their ability to get back into the rocks.  We did get some larger 15-25 pounders, however, and many were lost to the rocks.

The same areas also held rainbow runners, barred pargo, snapper, smaller yellowtail, amberjack, cabrilla as well as bonito and jack crevalle making for some excellent fulls-speed action.   As well, we’re starting to see some roosterfish in the area up to about 20 pounds plus a few free-swimming dorado moving into the area which keeps it promising.

Later in the week, the winds kicked in again and the only folks out on the water enjoying were the kiteboarders and windsurfers.

Check out this video of the channel in front of Cerralvo Island (turn up your volume)!

It was blowing even stronger before this video was taken.

It should get calmer with each passing week.  Fingers crossed!

That’s my story!

WINDS DIMINISHING (SOMEWHAT) – FISHING IMPROVING (SOMEWHAT)

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay/ Suenos Bay Fishing Report for Week of April 9-16, 2023

MEXICAN MINUTE LA PAZ VIDEO REPORT

THE BIG PICTURE and the REST of the STORY…

Our San Diego friends, Maureen and Skip got a couple of nice yellowtail to take home fishing with Captain Victor.

Russ Osterstein got a pretty early season dorado just off the rocks outside of Bahia Muertos where he was staying at Rancho Costa at Gary Wagner’s place.

Sometimes, it’s not the size or quantity, it’s just about having fun. Sage Fleener and his dad had just one day to fish and wanted to take light spinning tackle to fish the rocks. Had a kick with over 30 fish hooked including 7 or 8 species. They released everything except a few for dinner.  See the photo below of Sage with Captain Jorge!

Just so much fun on light tackle! Another hook-up! This is all-day fun!

From Colorado, Chris Bee with a legit yellowtail headed for the kitchen at Rancho Costa in Bahia Muertos.

Skip and Maureen Coomber with some of their friends and a varietal catch. That’s FOG in the background!

With daytime temps hitting the low 80’s now, it finally started to feel like spring with a tinge of summer thrown in as winds (at least for now) diminished enough to get some folks out on the water.

As mentioned numerous times, this has been the windiest and roughest winter we can remember in our 30 years in La Paz.   Normally, November to April is our off-season because it’s just too crazy on the water more-often-than-not.  However, this past winter has been historic.

We’re not quite done with the winds yet,  but at least for this past week, there were enough calmer days where the winds abated and we got folks out on the water.

We actually sent our first boats of the year with our Tailhunter La Paz Fleet to try fishing north of the city where there had been a good jag of big yellowtail.  However, some boats got blown out one day and another day, it was calmer.  But the fish just weren’t going to have any of it and lock-jawed on us resulting in just a few bonito.  Not just us, but boats from other fleets as well.

By far, the better bite remained with our Tailhunter Las Arenas Fleet pushing out’ve Bahia Muertos.

Jack crevalle on light tackle will pull you out’ve your socks and great fun. Maureen has a big smile!

There was a nice mix of yellowtail, snapper, bonito, jack crevalle, cabrilla, pargo, sierra and even a few small roosterfish and dorado making for some nice action.   No tuna to report, but that could also be because the yellowtail have been the focus being so close inshore or over the reefs and much more ready to bite.

A bonus included some spectacular whales breaching as well.   Pretty thrilling to be so close to shore and seeing these great animals i the water!

Bonus whale breaching! Great shot and hard to catch on camera!

Looking at the extended forecast, the winds aren’t quite done with us yet.  However, with each passing week, it usually gets a little better as we head towards the summer months.

One interesting thing happened this week.  Crazy weather continuing as our anglers encountered FOG!  Yup…real thick clinging fog!  In my 30 years on the water in La Paz, I think I’ve run into Fog maybe twice.  You just never know!

COMING HOME!  FIND MY SHORTS ‘n’ FLIP FLOPS!

After almost 4 months on the road, we’re just wrapping up our final show here in Indianapolis, Indiana at the NRA Convention.  That means I’m finally coming home to La Paz.  Big thanks and shout out to everyone who came to see us at all the shows across the U.S. every week to say hi and all the crazy good hospitality, smiles, grins and laughs and for those of you coming to visit, we’ll be waiting for you in La Paz!

By the way…who knew?  Never been to Indianapolis before and had no idea what to expect.  Hey, Indy…we are totally enamored with you! What a great city to visit.  Great folks.  Great restaurants.  Zero traffic.  Incredibly clean and so much history as well.  We’ll be back soon and hopefully not working.  It bears much more exploring.  Thanks for having us!

We still have some openings this year so get in touch with us before we’re completely sold out!

Write me: Jonathan@tailhunter.com

Also, thank you so much to everyone for all the good wishes ya’ll sent to Jilly on her birthday.  We had to work and travel, but we had (and continue to celebrate all week) a great time!  She just keeps getting mo’ bettah!  I’m blessed!

That’s my story!

STILL WINDY BUT SOME SURPRISE TUNA POP

UP!

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay/ Suenos Bay Fishing Report for Week of Jan. 8-14, 2023

MEXICAN MINUTE LA PAZ VIDEO REPORT

THE BIG PICTURE and the REST of the STORY…

Our amigo and owner of famous Giggling Marlin Bar in Cabo, Gary Wagner (r) was hosting some friends at his place at Bahia Muertos Rancho Costa including former Golden State Warrior Clifford Ray had quite a day. They found a window between bouts of wind and got over to Cerralvo Island where they hit snapper, sierra and surprising yellowfin tuna.

_________________

We had the usual windy rough conditions most of the week, but earlier in the week some windows of opportunity popped up and we got some friends out from Bahia Muertos.  They tell me there’s a ton of sardines out there and the waters are loaded with sierra.  They got out to the south end of Cerralvo Island and found some 50-pound grade yellowfin tuna on dead sardines.  Plus added in some pargo and sierra as well. Winds came up later in the week again and shut things down.

It’s been mostly sunny with temperatures in the high 70’s in the days and in the high 50’s at night.  The extended forecast is showing the winds will be down early in the week, but mid-week the winds will really ramp up and there’s a good chance the port captain will shut down boat traffic and close the port.

FEW FISHERMEN OUT DUE TO WINDS BUT

FISH ARE THERE!

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay/ Bahia Suenos Fishing Report for Week of Jan.1-7, 2023

THE MEXICAN MINUTE LA PAZ VIDEO REPORT

THE BIG PICTURE and the REST of the STORY…

Gama Santiago (on the right) and his amigo, Ivan, bundled up and had a surprisingly good day and a great mix of fish including amberjack, dorado, yellowtail and bonito. The fish were caught with a mix of live sardines and also using vertical jigging.

Miles Wagner with dad, Gary, owner of Rancho Costa in Bahia Muertos were out jumping all over the sierra. Gary says there’s lots of bait and the sierra are thick!

Nice yellowtail hamachi of Gama. He was using a yo-yo jig on the fish.

A mostly sunny week with nice temps between the mid-50’s and mid-60’s, but still not many folks on the water because of northern winds roughing up the waters.  We had to cancel several trips because of it.

However, here and there some folks got out and found some windows of opportunity to get out in between gusts.  Many of the folks we do get out are locals who have the opportunity to have flexible schedules to find the better days or else tourists who have wiggle-room in their vacation agendas to avoid the windier times.

Surprisingly, there’s still some dorado around which are usually gone by October or November.  That leads me to believe there’s still some warm water patches here and there.  However, most catches were colder water fish like small yellowtail and numerous sierra as well as bonito, jacks and cabrilla.

There’s lots of live sardines around although yo-yo jigs have also been productive if you can keep them out’ve the rocky bottoms.

THANK YOU DALLAS SAFARI CLUB!

WINDY AND QUIET

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay/ Bahia Suenos Fishing Report for Week of Dec. 13-20, 2022

MEXICAN MINUTE LA PAZ VIDEO REPORT

THE BIG PICTURE and the REST of the STORY…

Keaton Lesnik and his dad had just one day to squeeze in some fishing and happened to pick that ONE day that was nice enough to be out! Got themselves a couple of dorado that they had cooked up at our Tailhunter Restaurant.

___________________________

Not much to report.  About the only ones on the water this week seemed to be commercial guys who are working to catch fish to sell.  Or they were captains feeding their family or catching fish for the holidays or a few locals.  But, the thing with all of them is that they can pick-and-choose which days are better to be on the water.  Or, they know they can get out for just a few hours then come right back in with whatever they can catch if the winds kick up…and they often did.

For most, the winds were just too strong and the waters too rough this past week with just a few little windows of opportunity.  In fact, it was so windy the city of La Paz even cancelled the Christmas Boat Parade.  And that was INSIDE the harbor and bay!

But, there were some interesting catches.  Still seems to strangely be some dorado swimming around despite the weather and the fact that dorado season pretty much ended back in October.  Some nice 20-25 pound fish are still getting hooked, but most are the fun 10-pound-class fish.  As well, there are sierra, white bonito (good eating), jack crevalle, snapper and cabrilla reported this week. But, again, not many reports coming off the water since not many folks fishing and everyone getting ready for the holidays.

All is calm…all is bright on the La Paz Malecon

FROM OUR TAILHUNTER FAMILY TO YOURS…

“Christmas waves a magic wand over this world, and behold, everything is softer and more beautiful.”
Just hoping your holidays and Christmas is filled with blessings and all things good.  You are all a gift to us with all the smiles you bring!

QUIET TIMES IN TOWN

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muerto Bay/ Suenos Bay Fishing Report for Week of Nov. 24-Dec. 2, 2022

MEXICAN MINUTE VIDEO REPORT

THE BIG PICTURE and the REST of the STORY…

Dave Wancyzk (middle) and two of his buddies are in town for work, but got away one day and found some nice dorado surprisingly.

More sierra like this one that Monty caught are showing up with more frequency now that the waters are getting colder.

Not much happening on the water.  Mostly folks in town for Thanksgiving holidays.  Had several folks interested in fishing this week, but winds changed their minds.   This coming week doesn’t look much better with most of the days gusting 15-20 mph.

We did get a couple of guys out for one day.  We had to juggle a bit to find a day that was least windy.  He had them fish with our Las Arenas fleet which is more protected and the fishing grounds are closer.  Surprisingly, so late in the season, but they got into some healthy legit dorado.  Warm water fish!  We figured dorado season kinda left us when things got cooler, but I guess there’s a few still hanging around.  Nice surprise.

Beyond that…it’s mostly cold water species.

Some of the locals and commercial guys are out catching snapper, cabrilla and sierra inshore.  Live bait is hard to get when the winds are blowing so mostly using frozen baits and lures.
Town is pretty quiet, but getting fuller for the holidays.  It’s kind of a real nice time to be around!
That’s my story!

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay/ Suenos Bay Fishing Report from Tailhunter Sportfishing for Week of Nov 15-22 2022

LULL BEFORE THE HOLIDAYS

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay/ Suenos Bay Fishing Report for Week of Nov. 15-22, 2023

MEXICAN MINUTE VIDEO REPORT

THE BIG PICTURE and the REST of the STORY…

This past week was pretty typical late fall type conditions.  Lots of sunshine for the snowbirds with temps in the low 80’s to high 70’s and cool evening conditions in the mid-60’s.   Some days really nice and others blustery and windy.  Seems like each week the air temps are getting a tad cooler and the waters are getting just a bit greener as they cool off as well.

Honestly, not many folks in town as this is the lull before the holidays.  I expect that to change this coming week with Thanksgiving coming up.   So, not many tourists in town.  It’s actually a very peaceful time.

There are even fewer folks interested in fishing.  Just a few walk-in’s now and then.  Not in town specifically to fish, but just looking for a day on the water.  Unfortunately, the couple of bookings we had, were cancelled due to windy conditions on those particular days.   Some folks don’t have very flexible schedules so we warn folks if the particular day they want to go out doesn’t look good.   Or looks like it might get blown out.

Captain Armando got out with Miguel Campos and found a nice bit of dorado that wanted to chew on one of the least windy days. Miguel is from Puerto Vallarta.

On the other hand, the few days that conditions were amenable, there are still fish biting, although it’s mostly locals from La Paz in the boats.

There’s a few dorado here and there.  As well, there were a few hookups on wahoo and billfish.  However, most of the catch is turning towards cooler water species with cabrilla, snapper, rainbow runners, sierra and jacks.   Most of this is inshore fishing.  We even found small yellowtail under the tankers anchored in the bay.

Sydney Wagner with big smiles and a big cabrilla that I’m sure went to the dinner table at her dad, Gary Wagner’s place there at Bahia Muertos at Rancho Costa just south of La Paz.

With the rougher waters, it’s getting more difficult to find live bait, but that’s one of the variables with fishing this time of year.  The coming week for Thanksgiving is looking like there will be strong winds from the north pretty much all week.

WINTER WHALE WATCHING NOW BOOKING

The annual migration of the gray whales to Bahia Magdalena will be coming soon and prime time to see them is mid- February to late March.  This is the largest migration of animals in the world and this is a great opportunity to get about as close as you can imagine for a trip of a lifetime.

Get in touch with us and let’s get you set up!  Write me:  tailhunterfishinglapaz@gmail.com

We’ll put the whole trip together including your whalewatching, hotels, transportation and more!

That’s my story…Wishing you a safe, happy and peaceful Thanksgiving!

Blessings always

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay/ Suenos Bay Fishing Report from Tailhunter Sportfishing for Week of Nov. 7-14, 2022

FISH STILL BITE IN BETWEEN WINDS

(BUT FEW ANGLERS THESE DAYS)

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay/ Suenos Bay Fishing Report for Week of Nov. 7-14, 2022

MEXICAN MINUTE VIDEO REPORT

THE BIG PICTURE and the REST OF THE STORY…

More and more of these rainbow runners showing up in the counts as waters get cooler. These are cousin to the yellowtail and Sidney Wagner caught this one just off Punta Perrico around from her dad’s place at Bahia Muertos.

Finally got a chance to get out with Jilly for just a few hours and we found some nice dorado under a couple of buoys in the channel in front of Cerralvo Island. You can tell the waters are getting colder and greener.

These four guys rocked it! Captain Gaby from Las Cruces was out with Marshall Hydorn, John Clayton and Carter Mack at the north end of Las Cruces dragging some Marauders and hit the hat trick of wahoo…3 nice ones on board. Gaby with the bonito!

JIlly with Captain Joel got the biggest dorado of the day on a live sardine.  She totaled up 4 dorado and 3 cabrilla on the day.

Gary Wagner at his place at Rancho Costa in Bahia Muertos was able to get out one day and took this late season bull dorado!

This is that big lull before the holidays. Town is pretty quiet.  The folks that are here are mostly tourists and snowbirds looking for some sunshine.  Not much of anyone here that is specifically here to fish.

If someone does want to fish, they are usually walk-in folks just looking for a day on the water.  Nothing hard-core.   Most of the savvy fisher-folk have left as the 2022 fishing season winds down.

The winter winds have started blowing from the north making a fish trip an exercise in trying to figure out which days the winds won’t blow you off the water.  Two weeks ago, we had three days of the week that were too blustery.  This past week, there were two days.  As I write this, it appears that maybe 5 days will be quite windy.

Some of those days, you can probably get out and we would fish you in some of the more protected in-shore areas.  But, if the wind is really howling, there’s a good chance the port captain will shut down all boat traffic departing or arriving.

There are still some dorado around.  Most of the are the fun smaller 5-12 pounders with some occasional big toad bulls still lurking.  One thing nice is that you could just go to the big tankers anchored in La Paz Bay and find some schools without having to go out too far.

There’s some wahoo at the north end of Cerralvo Island, but for the most part, the weather is cooling and so are the waters with blue waters starting to turn green and cloudy.   Consequently, more cooler-water species are moving in.

This includes, sierra, rainbow runners, pargo, cabrilla, jacks and even a few amberjack and yellowtail.  These will become more predominant as the waters continue to cool off.

Mostly, live bait (sardines) and cut bait (stripped bonito) have been the most effective attractants, but as waters get rougher, it’s harder to find the sardines.  Also, the bait guys will be more reluctant to go find bait to sell if there aren’t many folks fishing.

That’s my story!

MEXICAN MINUTE VIDEO REPORT

THE BIG PICTURE and the REST of the STORY…

What a smile! Sue Cross from Santa Cruz has been waiting for awhile to come visit us again and she got right back into it with some fun on the dorado grounds and this nice bull! (Thanks again for the empanadas, Sue!)

Jim Bailey from San Diego on a first-time visit didn’t do so bad with the dorado at Bahia Muertos! Good day!

Good to have Adam Florence from Kansas back to visit us. He was out with Captain Pancho and hooked this sailfish on light tackle and a spinning reel outfit! Even moreso…they were able to release the fish which swam away strongly! Well done!

First day for Sal Pamiza from S. Carolina with our son-in-law from Hewitt TX, Brian Reid and a good start on the fishing week including a rare blue tiger dorado on the end of the table.

Brent Ritchie and Tom Brewer have some mahi meat on the table to have cleaned up for them!

Thanks, Chris Bedsaul for the awesome underwater dorado shot!

Captain Rogelio gives young Ryder Jensen a hand with his bull dorado to take a photo! Ryder had a couple of fun days with us.

Wayne Vanzandt and Mike Jennings rocked it for 3 days with the dorado producing some good quality fishing with Captain Victor.

Great new Tailhunter amigos, Julie Hansen with sons Marcus and Alex had fun with the mahi schools.

Nothing wrong tangling with some of our feisty bonito that will pull you outta your socks! Ryan Jensen with Captain Rogelio and another catch-and-release!

Some awesome sierra caught by Michelle Rahn and Sue Cross who had enough dorado from the first day and decided to fish for something else! Sierra are a sure sign that waters are cooling off. Delicious eating fish too!

Jim and Brenda Bovee with their favorite Captain Pancho.

The Haltons…Belle, Brian and Liz squeezed in one day of fishing and did well with dorado to take and have cooked up in town.

Mike with Captain Jorge and some good color on the deck!

Straight up…fishing was pretty good…when we could go out.

About half the day this week were bumpy and rough and windy and probably would have been best to not fish, but folks still wanted to get out.  One day the wind forecasts were so strong, the La Paz port captain shut down all boat traffic preventing anyone from going out.

One day our boats pretty much got blown off the water after a brave effort to catch fish.  I think we had 8 pangas out that day.  They came back with 4 fish total for all those fishermen.  This is what it looked like at Bahia Muertos where we launch.

Normally, what it looks like:

This is what we got in the video below.  This is why all the windsurfers come to the area and love the coming months so much.  These winds will only get stronger as winter arrives.

It rarely happens, because normally during the season it’s so calm, but we actually had some folks get seasick this past week which is unfortunate.

But with growing frequency,  the winds will be increasing and why we consider November to April to be our off-season and why so few fishermen are out on the waters.  (It’s why all the windsurfers and kiteboarders descend on our area in the winter).  Plus, it’s getting cooler and our captains and I were actually wearing sweatshirts in the mornings.

However, on the days we did fish, the dorado are still biting nicely.  Decent 5-20 pound fish were the average with limits or near limits most days.  The fish are eating live baits, dead baits, chunked bonito strips and trolled feathers.   The fish can be found in numerous places and often, not that far off the beach or shoreline or as close as the rocks and cliffs.

We still have a few billfish also being hooked as well as plenty of bonito, some jack crevalle, snapper and cabrilla.  However, cooler water fish like sierra, pompano, trevally and rainbow runners are starting to show up in the counts with more frequency.  I even heard that some of the commercial pangeros hung some yellowtail off the south end of Cerralvo Island.

So, warm water fishing is transitioning to cooler water fishing and species and we’re pretty much seeing the last of our fishing groups for the year now that the season is changing, but also as the holidays approach.  More snowbirds coming to town looking for sunshine and not so much interested in being on the water.

BOOKINGS FOR 2023 – 30 years in La Paz!

Dates for 2023 filling faaaaast!

We are just coming off another banner year right now and we were booked up 3-6 months in advance.  We had to turn many folks away or many of you were not able to get your favorite captain or hotel.  We don’t want to miss you or have you disappointed.

Reservations are coming in daily and many folks left La Paz and went home and gave us dates for 2023 already.   Don’t wait!  Really!

We are NOT going to be able to do as many shows as we normally do.  With the price of gas, it’s impossible to drive for 3 months and go 10-15,000 miles of driving so we have to cut down on the shows.  So, don’t wait until show season to get in touch with us.
