Bennett Clegg always does well on the light tackle. This pretty bull dorado he caught while fishing with Captain Joel is no exception.

Ken Smith had just one day to squeeze in to try to catch his bucket-list rooster. He and Captain Armando rocked this big one and several others. All released.

That’s some good eating! Scott Pitts put this nice cabrilla in the fish box.

With Captain Rogelio our first-timer Utah amigos, Morgan Robinson and her dad, Cody just off Espirito Santo Island.

Tim Weaver is usually wearing black robes and has a gavel in his hand as a judge from Arkansas. This time he’s got himself a nice roosterfish. One of several all released.

Scott Dull squeezed in a quick drive down from Loreto to fish one day with us and ended with a sucessful catch of pargo, cabrilla and triggerfish to drive back up north.

I THINK this is Greg Wetherbee behind the mask! He worked his flyrod for five days and caught a number of species including this slugger jack crevalle.

Pro fishing guide, John Daly, was a first-time visitor with us and shows off his first roosterfish outside of Suenos for a photo and release.

Ben Rodriguez, another of our first-timers this week, shows off a first-day catch off the reef with triggers cabrilla, big pargo and snapper .Ben is from San Diego.

Tim had himself a pretty active week with lots of species including this dog-tooth snapper. He did release alot of fish too!

Always a pleasure to have Mark Brown visit us. Last year, they had to cancel, but he was back this week and fished with Captain Alfredo taking this fat roosterfish north of La Paz. The fish was released .

I’ve known Ray Laney for years and he brought his son, Daniel, down for his high school graduation. They had to work hard for their fish, but the last day finally turned on with some nice dorado. Ray is from Oxnard CA

Dave Elliott and Bill Cogdall are two more of our new amigos who had to cancel last year, but came back this year for 3 days on the water with us. Great guys and glad to have them finally make it. They did pretty good on the dorado!

This photo is just too special. John Carser and his wife, Carol from Huntington Beach CA brought grandson Patrick to La Paz. Patrick is from Rhode Island and spending the summer with grandma and grandpa. This was his first time saltwater fishing and this was his first dorado! He did it! But, check the great facial expression! Grandpa John is all smiles.

Hard to tell, but I think this is Mark Buddy behind the mask showing off one of several roosterfish he took on the fly while fishing the whole week with us . He got a number of species on the flyrod. All fish were released.

One of the best guys around…long time amigo from Denver, John Ehlers with his favorite Captain Pancho. John’s got another rooster to put back in the water as soon as he takes the photo.

Alicia Clegg from the East Bay of San Francisco can fish! She does so well every year. She’s got another dorado for the box!

Sam Sybesma from Bellflower is another of our good amigos who has been fishing with us for years. He brought down his son, Micah, this year. I think Micah caught bigger fish than dad!

Dan Hibma was visiting us for the first time from S. California and it looks like he’s got a nice dorado ready for the box.

It wasn’t a spectacular week of fishing to be honest.  There weren’t alot of big trophy fish caught.

But, it was good steady summer fun fishing!  Except for a few slack times, overall, everyone caught fish.  There was plenty of action to go around.

Sometimes when it’s all big fish, especially for families, kids or first timers, big fish can be a tough fight.  And often a big disappointment when they break off.  With the fish we had this week, it was just pretty good steady fun fishing.

There might be the occasion off day, but most of our anglers fish several days.  The good days usually made up for the slower days and the bite produced a good mix of dorado, billfish, lots of small to medium roosterfish, jack crevalle, big bonito, pargo, snapper, cabrilla and even some late season amberjack and rainbow runners.

The dorado have definitely slowed from the wild bite of a few weeks ago, but fish are still out there holding especially under the sargasso paddies.  There were two days when there were lots of fish all around, but they just wouldn’t bite.  It was frustrating.  We figured it was just because the tides were especially slack and the fish simply weren’t feeding.  That applied to the dorado as well as other species.  The currents picked up and they fish started biting again.

Marlin have tapered as well.  I think that has alot to do with the current, but also there has been so much traffic on the fishing grounds that the marlin have gotten lock-jawed.  The marlin have been so thick over the last month that everyone and their brother, especially locals have been pounding the waters for the billfish. Hopefully, the bite comes back.

If you’re coming down, it’s been warm!  High 90’s to low 100’s with humidity.

WIND SLACKS – CRAZY VARIETY of BITERS!

Crazy variety for a few hours of morning fishing for Fernando, his brother and son. On the rack…dorado, big sierra, snapper, pargo liso and cabrilla.

They’re early! The big pargo liso (mullet snapper) normally don’t start schooling up until spring-time but they’re already here and hunkered in the rocks and reefs and will bust you up!

It’s January, but yes, those are wahoo on the cutting board along with dorado, cabrilla and tasty white bonito.

Not many folks fishing post-holidays, but town is pretty busy with escapees from the colder weather in the U.S. and Canada. However, this contrary to the gusting winds normally associated with this time of year, there were some incredibly pretty days right out’ve a postcard this past week. Winds settled, skies cleared and day-time temps reached into the 70’s. We could not have asked for better weather and a great window to get on the water.

That being said, it allowed folks to get out in the bay to swim with the whalesharks finally. The shallow water just inside the bay has been holding 6-10 baby whalesharks to swim with, but often it’s too windy and choppy to find them.

With the fishing, it’s been confusing and mixed…in a good way!

Normally, this time of year, when we can get out, we’re hitting mostly cold-water species inshore because well, the waters are cooler and it’s often too rough to get too far out.

However, not only did anglers find the cooler water species like cabrilla, snapper and some unusually big sierra, but a bit crazy because they also hit dorado, white bonito, wahoo and even a few marlin were seen and hooked!

This is indicative of some warm water still holding over so maybe these species will stick around. It’s making for a great variety of fish. Also with abundant sardines for bait, the fish are ready to chew.

One noticeably event seems to be that the big pargo liso (mullet snapper) that we don’t see until later in the spring have already shown up and are schooling over the rocky areas like Cerralvo Island and Punta Perrico. These tough fish are really difficult to wrestle out’ve the rocks and can test both angler and his gear, but are spectacular fighters and great eating and look like giant goldfish.

Also, flights are now coming in directly from the United States to La Paz now for the first time in 14 years. American Airlines from Dallas and Phoenix has been bringing folks now for almost a month.

Nice to have American Airlines now flying directly from Phoenix and Dallas to La Paz. First time we’ve had direct flights in over a decade. No more long drives up from Cabo. The flights have been very popular since they started a month ago.  Easy flights into the uncrowded La Paz Airport then it’s just a few minutes to your hotel.

WEEK STARTS STRONG THEN GETS TOUGH

Back home in Denver, it was below freezing. Here in La Paz, it was 102 and after 2 slow days of fishing, John Lowdermilk and Gianni Checa finally hit the dorado schools and filled a box of fish!

By far, the best catches of a slower week, was had by our long-time amigos, Daniel and his dad, Jim Bovee from San Diego. Talk about a crazy season. Only our 2nd wahoo of the season. A big amberjack that usually is only around in the spring and two big pargo that are also usually cooler-water fish!

Eastern Washington in the house with Dan McKinley and Darrel Startin on their first trip down to visit us. They had one of the better days of fishing this past week.

Great prized catch for Don Busse who has fished with us for years and never gotten a pargo liso (mullet snapper). They are not only a difficult fish to pull from the rocks, but it’s September and these are cold-water fish we normally see in March and April. It’s a crazy year. Don is from Lakewood CA.

Firefighter Mike Welch on his first trip to visit us, shows off two of his dorado, but take a look at the box below. It was one of the better outtings this past week.

The bonito north of town around Espirito Santo Island were especially tough and big fast sluggers like this one with Mike Welch hooked in between dorado.

Dave’s got another dorado in the boat. Lots of dorado did get released this week.

 

With the full moon, the week surprisingly started really strong! Limits of dorado for both our Tailhunter Las Arenas and our Tailhunter La Paz Fleet. Thunderstorms that were predicted, never materialized and we finally had a great combination of solid fishing action and sunny weather with fairly flat seas.

The dorado weren’t big. The largest ran maybe 20 pounds, but with the 5-10 pounders, there was alot of action and many boats often limited early then caught-and -released fish. Lots of fillets ended up at our Tailhunter Fubar Cocina Restaurant every night.

In addition, we had a bit or unexpected variety. The wahoo made a show although we only got one to the boat, but it was only the 2nd wahoo of the season, but some of the other boats got hook-ups as well.

Additionally some great inshore fishing with nice cabrilla, pargo, snapper, roosterfish, amberjack plus big bonito an jacks made for some good days of fishing.

As the week went on, amazingly, the full moon waned and so did the fishing! Our Las Arenas fleet really had to work hard to find fish, but our La Paz fleet continued to do OK.  But straight up…it really got tough.  Overall, the fishing action dropped off tremendously.

I have no idea why.  Conditions seemed normal for the time of year.  Lots of bait.  The fish just went “lockjaw” and captains and anglers alike really struggled to get into a solid bite of any note.  Everyone who wanted to take home fish, still took home fish, but it was spotty at best!

Hopefully, by the time you’re reading this we’ll be back up-to-speed.

Maybe the best news of the week was the re-opening of the beaches and our water-front malecon after almost 5 months or Covid-closure! It was good to see people in the water; walking along the waterfront and cruising the Malecon in the evenings. It really put people in an up-beat mood and you could feel the palpable joy in the locals as well as the tourists.

Along with that, the decrease in restrictions, also applied to the opening of churches (with protocols); gyms, the movie theaters, salons, spas and so man non-essential businesses that were shuttered.

Every year, Kelly Jimenez from Colorado comes down with her family to visit us for years. Every year, it’s something new and better! This year, with Captain Jorge, check out the size of this huge roosterfish she battled outsid Bahia Muertos! The fish was released.

Captain Chito and Diego Jimenez are all smiles as Diego has been fishing with us for many years from Loveland CO and always wanted a sail. After releasing several marlin this week, this sail was kept and meat donated.

They hooked 4 big roosters this morning. Gary Wagner owner of the Rancho Costa in Bahia Muertos with friend, Rush Whitmarsh from San Diego with one of those 4 hefty roosters caught and released.

Jim Stahlman was with us all week an fishing with Captain Jorge. Jim is from Boise, ID and caught roosterfish, jacks, wahoo and on this day, his personal best dorado.

Giving some “sugar” to their dorado, the Morales sisters from California, Christina, Kimberly and Ruby on the beach at Bahia Muertos. Ruby also landed a sailfish that day.

Kelly and Diego Jimenez were on a roll this week releasing several marlin, numerous roosterfish, jacks and other species. They estimated they caught almost 20 different species. They caught this marlin and sailfish the same day with Captain Chito. The fish could not be released, but meat was gifted.

He fished hard all week and got wore out! But, 11-year-old, Roman Jimenez worked it and this was his largest jack crevalle of the week which he released.

Right in front of the Punta Arenas lighthouse just off the beach, Rush and Gary with another roosterfish for a quick photo and release!

After a long battle, Jim’s marlin is getting closer to the boat!

…and here it is! Great shot. Great battle ! Even better, Jim released the fish to fight another day!

Ruby Morales, holding the head, gets an assist from her sisters to pose with her sailfish. Ruby always does well. Last year she single-handed a huge yellowfin tuna.

Captain Pancho lends a hand to Kelly Jimenez and a fun little rooster right up in the shallows of Bahia Muertos. The fish was released. There’s alot of little jacks and roosters in the bay that are great for catch-and-release light tackle fun.

Immensely fun when you’re throwing a surface-popper like the one hanging out’ve the mouth of this jack crevalle caught by Rush Whitmore of San Diego. The fish was released.

Surely no shortage of action on these tough-fighting jack crevalle nicknamed “toros” by the Mexican fishermen which means “bull.” Diego Jimenez with the photo and fish!

Our Captain Gerardo stands behind Fernando Morales and pal, Jonathan Jackson and 3 of their dorado. They caught big fish limits early in the morning and were back on the beach and back to town long before anyone else!

A very good week overall. Some boats did better than others some days. Some spots were better than others. There was a little work involved in finding the fish. But for anyone who put in a couple of days on the water, you surely went home with a bunch of fish in the cooler; some to eat for dinner; and probably released alot of fish too.

I can’t believe how many species were hooked this week!

I think I counted almost 20 different species. They included dorado, tuna sailfish, marlin, roosterfish, jacks…we even hooked some sharks and (get this) salt-water catfish!

The week started out with an explosion of tuna for our Tailhunter Las Arenas Fleet. I mean, the ocean just blew tuna out’ve the water and onto the rods and reels. Pretty much all you could want in the shallow waters off Punta Arenas and Bahia Muertos. You could see the tuna swimming under the boat and see the bottom as well. It was THAT shallow. Fish were nice-sized 10-20 pounders too.

Next day, everyone wanted the tuna again, but for the most part, that was the tuna show for the week, even though some tuna popped up here and there.

After that, dorado…some good grade legit 20-25 pounders moved in. So did big roosterfish between 10-80 pounds along the shoreline along with their jack crevalle cousins. Add in snapper, cabbrilla, pargo, triggerfish and bonito and there was no shortage of action most days with most boats. Our Las Arenas Fleet definitely had the better action but that doesn’t mean our La Paz fleet wasn’t working it.

North of town, the water just seemed a bit cooler…a bit off-color. It’s taking awhile to come around.

Honestly, with all this variety and the windy days we’re still getting, this is very much like spring-time fishing . Maybe May or June-style fishing. Plus, it’s not really as hot as I would expect for this time of year. The waters are still getting to the right spot . Even when fish weren’t biting, we were definitely seeing the fish…schools of them, but they weren’t necessarily on the chew. This was especially true of the dorado.

However, billfish really stepped up this week. Not all of them wanted to bite but we hooked more striped marlin and more sailfish this week than any week I can remember. We lost alot of them too because folks would be fishing for dorado or some other smaller species and instead a billfish would take a bite instead and well…off to the races. Usually the fish would win, but a couple of folks got their fish to the boats and most were released.

But, then again, there were marlin sometimes just sitting on the surface sunning. Not interested in feeding at tall. And that is very characteristic of spring-time behavior.
Hopefully, more and better coming up!

CORONAVIRUS UPDATES

Everything pretty much open or getting there!  Still holding at “Orange Level 5” which means no more than 30% occupancy and masks are required.  Lots of sanitation protocols in place everywhere.  Town not very full, but more fishermen coming all the time.  Beaches are still mostly closed, but plans to re-open maybe this week.  Social distancing required, but there’s not enough people around to make it an issue.

All water activities like scuba, snorkeling, booze cruises, kayaking, etc. were re-opened this week.

 FUBAR COCINA CANTINA

As many of you know, we regretfully had to close our famous Tailhunter Restaurant Bar permanently when the quarantine was first imposed back in early April.   However, these past few weeks we’ve been diligently painting, spackling and re-modeling our downtairs FUBAR cafe to include a full bar…outdoor seating…an expanded menu with many of your favorite items from upstairs…plus the Sirena Mini-Super Market next door.   We can’t wait to be open again watching sports, playing live music and enjoying our many friends from around the world!

Popular Captain Pancho got out to fish close-in for some cabrilla and pargo for the family and said there’s alot of roosterfish along the shoreline like this one he caught and released.

Dennis is a Canadian amigo who lives in San Pedro near Muertos Bay and was out trying to catch some food. He ran into this hefty jack crevalle.

With no fishing allowed, the fish have no pressure!  Check this crazy video of jack crevalle on a feeding frenzy in the Cabo Marina.  Turn up the sound.  Thanks for the Pisces Fleet in Cabo for the footage!

Looks like La Paz will slowly be opening after June 15th.

 

Although Covid is raging in many parts of Mexico, La Paz has been designated as the safest tourist city by Mexican Health authorities and will have a gradual re-opening mid-month.  Authorities are saying, it would still probably take 10-14 days for businesses to resurrect themselves plus establish the safety and sanitation protocols that are being required to re-open.  Some, but not all airlines are also re-establishing routes and services.

 

 

As I’ve stated before, just because everyone gets the green light on June 16th to open, that doesn’t mean automatically everyone suddenly opens!  Like the U.S. many businesses suddenly just turned the keys and had to walk out.  Some will take time to re-open.  Others may never open again.

 

 

As of right now, I have no idea who plans to be open and when!!!!

 

 

Businesses are required to pass a health certification inspection.  New sanitary protocols have to be put in place.  Employees have to be found…and re-trained.  Everything has to be cleaned extensively after being vacant for almost 3 months.   Hotel rooms need to be sanitized from the ground up.  So do restaurants.  Even sportfishing boats need to be sanitized.

 

 

And then what?  How will folks eat in restaurants?  How many people in the shuttle from the airport?  Can hotel rooms be located next to each other?  How do you clean the rooms after a guest leaves?  So many moving parts!

 

TAILHUNTER SPORTISHING

 

The bottom line for us is that we will be back in La Paz June 23rd.  We finally found a flight home!  But, that also gives hotels, etc. a chance to get going and establish new routines, etc.   We lost our Tailhunter Restaurant permanently in the early days of the quarantine so we don’t have much to prep.  We are READY to fish!

 

 

But, we don’t (and can’t ) have you down if we don’t even know if the hotels will be ready!  Some still aren’t answering phones or e-mails because no one is in the offices.  Even if you have reservations, there might not yet flights…so many airlines seem to be making adjustments daily!

 

 

I’ve sent e-mails to everyone who had reservations for the month of June to contact us.  For all practicality, I think we’ll be up and going July 1st.  I hope.

INSHORE FISHING BEST

Scott Bryant from Colorado has himself some good eating cabrilla for dinner while staying at Rancho Costa.

Jigging with yo-yo iron, Dr. Santiago Gamaliel hung this nice yellowtail and had two other break off.

From Alaska, Mic Ward came down to enjoy a few days of sunshine at Rancho Costa at Bahia de los Muertos south of La Paz and landed a double-hand of cabrilla.

Not much of anyone out fishing this past week with mostly windy rough days outside.  Most of the fishing was confined to inshore species as anglers hugged the coastal areas seeking calmer water and protection from the north winds and choppy ocean.

 

Using Rapalas, stripped bait, squid and live bait (when it could be found), produced a mixed bag of pargo, snapper, triggerfish and cabrilla as well as some bonito, sierra and jack crevalle.  Slowly dragging smaller dark Rapalas over the rocky spots were especially productive for a variety of species.  Some yellowtail popped up as well and hopefully, this is the vanguard of our yellowtail

 

Despite the winds, it’s been sunny with highs in the mid to upper 70’s and nights down to the mid-50’s, but it looks like more wind will hit later this week.

 

DOWN THE ROAD WE GO!

Jill and I are just wrapping up here at the Washington State Fairgrounds where we spent the last 5 days in our booth at the Washington Sportsman’s Show!   It was the best show we’ve ever had here in almost 2 decades at this show.  Welcome to all our new amigos to the Tailhunter Nation and to see so many old friends and faces.  Also had alot of folks sign up to come down to see us as well and made reservations to fish with us in 2020.  We’re excited to have you down to visit!

Thanks for all the hospitality Washington!  (And rain too…loved it!  We don’t get much rain in Baja!)

WHALE WATCHING SEASON UNDERWAY AT BAHIA MAGDALENA

 

Although there might not be lots of folks fishing right now,  the 2002 whale watching season is just getting underway.  Whales should just about starting to show up.

THE BIG PICTURE and the REST of the STORY…

Alot of meat! Marlene Kikuchi from Los Angeles had a live mackerel pinned to her line not far from Punta Arenas with Captain Pancho  when she hooked this massive wahoo not far from the shoreline.  The big fish was weighed on a scale and measured 56-pounds!

It’s been over 10 years since Mark Rubin came to visit us so it was good to see him. He was out fishing with Captain Arcangel and got this colorful dorado up for a great photo!

On her first day out and first-time in La Paz, Kathy Parker was with Captain Luis and deckie Miguel  in the channel between the city and Espirito Santo Island in an area where big 50-150 pound tuna had been sighted. On her first bait in the water, this big yellowfin inhaled her little sardine and the fight was on! With her sister, Sherry (see photo below), trading the rod-back-and-forth for 4 long hours, the ladies finally got this big boy to the boat!

Holly Kunzler’s big dorado of the week was caught while fishing with our Tailhunter La Paz Fleet. Holly’s first trip to Baja and she was with us for the better part of the week visiting from Utah.

Our long-time amigos with their favorite Captain Jorge, Marianne and Jeff Sakuda enjoying Jeff’s retirement vacation after 30 years as a pilot for United, they kicked off things with a nice rack of bull dorado.

Double tag-team! Sherry Cady was on her 2nd visit to us this year and this time brought her sister, Kathy Parker (see photo above) when they hung this big yellowfin tuna with deckhand Miguel and Captain Luis and battled the fat fish for 4 hours!

 

Montana Dewey and Leslie Spafford guide trips in Arizona and came to visit this week and go into some dorado and cabrilla their first day at Las Arenas.

First-timer and happy fisherman, George Misner, started his trip with a nice bull dorado just south of Bahia Muertos.

Popular Captain Chito hung two of those big tuna that were boiling north of La Paz for a few days. Unfortunately, photos of the clients didn’t come out!

Hi Craig! Always good to have Craig Corda back with us . He’s been our amigo for over 20 years and never has a bad day.

Al Chaves lives outside of Phoenix and was out with Captain Jorge when he got this dorado. He had a big tuna on briefly.

Jarat Bagwell from Arizona got the jackpot with his buddies when he caught the most fish for the day including dorado, cabrilla and snapper.

Texas in the house! Cody Timberlake is a professional cowboy and former bullrider and lives in Banderas TX. First trip with us and a dorado with Captain Alfredo.

Monte Aldridge shows off a bull dorado he picked up fishing off Espirito Santo Island. He’s from Richfield UT and always good to have him visit.

Eric Gunnells and Steve Bayer picked up these dorado on their one day out’ve Bahia Muertos.

Barbara Burnett and her husband Jerry have their own great salmon operation in Juneau AK, but came to visit us and started off with a day of dorado.

Captain Fili is hidden behind a dorado, but no hiding Zach Arnold and Trent Baysinger and a couple of nice mahi.

Things have fallen off rapidly with cooler temperature, stronger winds and currents and rougher water the last week-and-a-half.  Fishing has also dropped off dramatically.  The warm water season ended sooner than expected and I think things will continue to change as warm water species like the dorado, tuna, wahoo, and billfish move out and are replaced by more inshore cooler water species.

 

Once again this week, captains and clients worked hard to find picky fish.  Bait was harder to come by in the rougher waters and there were times with there were some uncharacteristically big swells, chop and gusty winds making it more difficult to fish.  The winds will only get stronger as normally calm La Paz Bay even got some big wind-generated rollers that smashed waves onto the waterfront areas.

 

There were still some dorado around although the schools are diminishing.   Most days boats scratched out a catch of 1-5 dorado per day with most about 10 pounds or so.  Smaller ones were released.  Lots of bonito, fortunately usually kept rods bent.

 

More inshore fish like triggerfish, snapper, pargo and cabrilla as well as sierra and jack crevalle and pompano increased in the counts as waters cooled and it became more incumbent to fish closer to the beaches and rocks.

 

There are, however, some great catches still waiting!

 

We had a few nice wahoo this week including a whopper 56-pounder by Marlene Kikuchi from Los Angeles.  As well, there’s still the occasional 30-50 pound roosterfish.

 

The biggest surprise was the appearance of some pig yellowfin tuna that were in the 50-150 pound class between Punta Tecolote and Espirito Santo Island in the channel.  These fish were toads that tore into anglers for 1-4 hour battles, when they would bite.  Sometimes, they were just a tease boiling around the pangas, but not interested in eating a hooked bait.  But, when they did bite, they were beasts!  Normally, we don’t see tuna around La Paz as we catch them mainly around Las Arenas so this was a nice surprise!

You never forget the first. Especially, when you have been trying for years like John Gibbs and Wiley Randolph who visit us every year and finally nailed their first wahoo…on the same day…on the same panga with Captain Pancho.

It’s easy to see why these guys are fun. With Captain Jorge, James Ekern, Corey Sowers and George Aun from Utah and a bunch of dorado.

First day and first time fishing with us, Steve Salbeck, rocked this big dog-tooth snapper with Captain Moncho. That’s alot of meat for the ice chest.

DORADO STILL CHEW BUT TUNA TEASE FINALLY!

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay/ Suenos Bay Fishing Report for Week of Sept. 8-15, 2019

SHORT ATTENTION SPAN WEEK-AT-A-GLANCE

Weather – hot and humid.  Very tropical.  Afternoon and occasional thunderstorms and flash flooding but otherwise sunny and in the mid to high 90’s.  Evenings low 80’s with a breeze.

Water – blue bathwater overall, but still come cold patches.  Might start getting colder soon.  Feels a bit like fall already.  A short summer.

Fishing (Scale of 1-10) – Maybe a high 6.  Still not where we should be this time of year although there’s solid dorado fishing mostly.  This is what it should be in July.

Fish Caught – 90% dorado mainly because that’s what 90% are fishing for!  But we’ve had some jags of tuna.  We’ve lost marlin and wahoo.  Roosterfish are still around but not many folks fishing for them.  Dorado are easy and fun.  Seeing more of those big dog-tooth, snapper, cabrilla, sierra, pargo, bonito, jack crevalle, pompano, needlefish.

Oh yea! About time! Joe Duffy who runs a charter operation up in the Bay Area with his dad, Noel (who came all the way from Ireland) and a nice yellowfin tuna just off Punta Perrico!

My funny buddy, Brian Buchanan, had a good week of dorado fishing with us. Brian is from the Salt Lake City area.

These two great guys had a fun week of fishing. First timers with Tailhunter Paul Marshall and Steve Avery.

For almost 20 years, our buddy retired firefighter Mac Treasure from Reno NV brings a great bunch of guys to visit us. This week, Mac stuck himself this big fat dog-tooth fishing with Captain Pancho.

They got Captain Arcangel to smile! Rob Markarian and Tom Worrel with a load of fish to start their trip.

Everyone’s favorite guy and hard working amigo, Jorge Romero, finally took a day off and got out to fish! Nice dorado Jorge!

The right kind! It’s about time! Captain Jorge gives a thumbs up for Jaimy Stolberg’s hefty tuna she battled just outside of Muertos Bay!

Two of our nicest friends for many years from Oregon, Dorothy and Steve Murata started their vacation with some dorado and a couple of yellowfin tuna fishing with Captain Gerardo.

You can always tell a flyfishing guy. They always put their rods in their mouths! They need one extra hand! Well-done, Joaquin! He got several fish on his flyrod.

Despite the full-moon, another pretty solid week of dorado fishing overall with fish scattered over a wide-range of ocean both inshore and offshore.  It’s pretty hard NOT to catch a dorado right now if you have a bait, lure or jig in the water.  It’s probably 90% of the catch!

 

There’s lots of other species around, but when the fun-fighting, easily caught and tasty dorado around, folks don’t usually spend much time chasing the other species!  This is especially true for a lot of our first-timers or less-experienced anglers.

 

Not every boat does great every single day.  There’s always the 1 or 2 boats that only get a few dorado or really have to work at it on a given day, and I hate it when maybe those folks are only fishing  single day.  But, if you’re fishing multiple days, it’s difficult to keep the dorado off your hook and you’ll go home with some great meat for the dinner plate and freezer.

 

But, there are other species around.

 

We had some marlin hook-ups and breakoffs.

 

We had at least 1 or 2 wahoo bites that got unbuttoned per day.

 

If you wanted a roosterfish, yes ,the 30-60 pounders are still around.

 

Inshore, there’s cabrilla, pargo and those big-dog-tooth snapper are willing to bite if you are into putting in the time and are up to the frustration of nearly getting yanked out’ve your socks only to have the fish bust you off in the shallow rocks.

 

More excitingly, late in the week, we had some jags of 20-40 pound yellowfin tuna pop up.  These fish have been absent for about 2 months and this is the time we should be seeing them, but have been conspicuously absent the latter part of this week.  I don’t wanna jinx it and say the tuna season has started, but hopefully, this is the start of some better tuna fishing.

Our community outreach program is still rolling full turbo.  Just sent a huge load of goods out to Los Planes to the kids and the community out there!  We also collected enough money this last week to sponsor two more kids for a whole year of school (books, food, uniforms, transportation…and they in turn have to keep up their grades and mentor another student).

 

No sooner did that load go out, then even more started coming in!  I was not able to get everyone’s photos, but some are below.  But a special shout-out to Tim Schlander who’s guys brought in numerous ice chests packed full of clothes, school clothes, hygiene items and more!!  Thanks for the big hearts to them and all of you who keep bringing both adult and childrens items and have helped us deliver several TONS of needed items over the last few years!

MEXICAN MINUTE VIDEO FISHING REPORT

The Big Picture and the Rest of the Story…

From Washington, Steve Hastings was out with Captain Victor from the Tailhunter Fleet and did the hat trick with 3 wahoo not far off the rocks that went 25-35 pounds. He also got some tasty white bonito as well.

 

Jeff Sakuda from Cypress CA makes one to two trips to La Paz to fish with Tailhunter for almost 20 years and loves fishing with Captain Jorge. One day produced two wahoo near Cerralvo Island.  The largest one taken on a purple Rapala Xrap and the other hit a live sardine.

Big roosterfish right off the rocks by Mark Bonsack from Washington. The fish was taken on live bait and released. These are the first large ones we’ve seen this year…right about on time!

Now, this is a fun day of fishing! Our good friends and anglers for many many years, Jeff Sakuda and Marianne Sugawara with a full rack of spring fish including white bonito, snapper and pargo.

Yup…some yellowtail still around. Our Captain Pancho does the honors! Hamachi for the grill!

Aloha boys from Maui shaka the camera. They only had one day to fish but got into some action. That’s Dean Badoyen and Ed with pargo, cabrilla, a huge trigger fish and snapper.

Yellowtail are still hitting on-and-off near Cerralvo Island. Mark Bonsack from Washington was fishing with the Tailhunter Fleet and caught this stocky forktail.

Trophy cabrilla headed into the box for Paul Nagata from San Francisco.

After a couple of so-so weeks where the weather and winds dictated our fishing, we finally got in a solid week of good weather and consequently better fishing.  There were still some lingering pesky winds, but overall a great time to be out on the water with good action and some good quality to the fish as well.

 

It also helps that we’ve got more fishermen now that the season is on too!

 

For sure, there were still some ups and downs and some low-points where the bite dropped off or only bonito bit.  However…inshore fishing over reefs, rocks and structure continued produce the most action as is typical of this time of the year.

 

Our guys who worked closer to shore and in the shallows saw good action and good quality on big snapper, big cabrilla, large triggerfish, amberjack, yellowtail and both barred pargo and pargo mulato.  Lots of larger fish lost in the rocks too…maybe half of all the fish hooked, but no shortage of biters!

The same areas produced jack crevalle, several kinds of bonito (including the good eating white-bonito) and still kicked out yellowtail as well up to about 25-pounds.

…and a jack crevalle! Lots of fun when you get into a school of these that can number into the hundreds. There’s a reason why the Mexican name for them is “TORO” which means “bull.” They are scrappy bulldogs when hooked.

 

We also hit our first big roosterfish of the season too.  We’ve gotten some smaller punk fish, but we got into some of the larger 30-50 pounders this week finally. All released.

 

Not too far away and still in relatively shallow water, the biggest and best surprise were the wahoo.  It’s about that time of the year and the speedsters were hitting live bait as well as trolled Rapalas and were nice sized 20-40 pound fish with some of our pangas getting multiple fish.

BAHIA MAGDALENA REPORT

We had Eric Skinner and his son, Nathan out for a few days working those incredible mangroves at the shallow end of Bahia Magdalena on the Baja Pacific side this past week for a few days.  In fact, as you’re reading this, they’re still out there.  They got more than a dozen different species the first 2 days including, corvina, snapper, pargo, cabrilla, grouper and bay bass on light tackle.

Bahia Magdalena offers hundreds of square miles of changing current, sloughs, channels and impenetrable mangroves holding a multitude of species in the shallow waters.

 

One a single day, they estimated they hooked more than 50 fish releasing most and donating others and, of course, keeping some for dinner. Here’s a layer of fish sitting on a bed of ice in the ice chest with about a 1/2 dozen different species.

Nathan and dad, Eric, fishing right up in the mangrove bushes were catching garopa (grouper) like these and releasing most.

A good day back at the fish cleaning table!

That’s a mess of corvina, plus pargo, grouper and even a halibut. Most fish had been released.

As mentioned, at the time of doing this report, they still had a few more days fishing Mag Bay so we’ll have more updates in next week’s report.
