A SIGN OF THINGS TO COME?

Some legit nice grade of yellowtail have been on the chew at the north and south ends of Cerralvo Island as well as other high spots and even in the shallows!

Not a bad mix of fish for February! Some bull dorado, a few good-sized cabrilla, white bonito and a sierra!

The area around Espirito Santo Island straight out’ve La Paz Bay is also holding yellowtail on the days the north winds aren’t blowing in your face and you can get out!

It was a kinder-gentler week from winter winds this past week. Most of the days were actually fishable much to the concern of all the windsurfers and kiteboarders, but much better for fishing.

Given it’s still technically “winter” the signs have been encouraging. Daytime temps touching the high 80’s and nighttime in the comfortable high 60’s and when the winds aren’t blowing those days been relatively calm for this time of year and good enough to get some folks on the water. There’s still not many as this is off-season, but most folks this time of year just want a day of fishing or so and are in town on vacation unlike the fishermen who show up later specifically to fish for numerous days.

“Catching” hasn’t been to bad either. Often, there’s a big difference between “fishing” and “catching,” but the catching lately has produced a nice variety of fish. In addition to the usual cabrilla (seabass), sierra, pargo, jacks, and numerous bonito including tasty white bonito, along the inshore areas, there are some toad-sized yellowtail coming off the high spots and rocky areas. Fish have been in the 20-30 pound class. There have also been some free-swimmer dorado in the 10-15 pound size starting to show up earlier than normal in the season.

Here’s what one of our local friends, Jimmy Williams,  wrote after fishing this past week and hitting the winds, but then finding some big yellowtail he couldn’t stop:

 

“I fished Wednesday out of El Sargento.. West wind was up when we reached the north end of Cervalvo, so we made beautiful large sardines just south of the red rocks on northeast side. Fished a few areas over there for a while for only 1 grande sierra. Left there and headed to La Riena and got our ass kicked getting out there, but when we drift fished just west of the rock over the pinnacles, we picked up 2 nice Dorado, 8 grande bonito, and some nice cabrilla. We hooked 4 brute yellows on live bait and couldn’t get one to boat. All 4 rocked us and I was using 60# with the drag buttoned down.”

It was also exciting to hear that at the north end of Cerralvo Island, some big 60-80 pound yellowfin tuna were blowing up in the chumlines although there were no bitters. I was told that they came up just aft of a big school of feeding yellowtail.

BUT WAIT!!!!

Just as I was going to post up this report, check out this slugger 150 pound yellowfin tuna caught at Bahia Muertos!  YEOW!  I guess the tuna ARE around!  It took 5 hours to boat this toad fish!

These pig tuna can put the hurt on you in the worst way!!! Be careful what you wish for! LOL

Folks think that if there’s crazy weather in the U.S. that somehow it stops at the border.  On the contrary, weather doesn’t stop at border.  If things are happening in the U.S., it definitely affects things in Mexico.   Accordingly, winds continued from the north although there were some spots here and there where the winds gave us some breaks and allowed a few moments of fishing.  They were rare and you had to pick your spots.

However, in addition the usual inshore species like snapper, cabrilla and jacks, some beefy yellowtail started to show up.  The usual spots at the north and south ends of Cerralvo Island and off Punta Perico held some nice fish in the 15-25 pound class.  The fish were willing to chew sardines, mackerel as well as yo-yo and knife jigs.  Slow trolled mackerel-colored Rapalas also kicked in a few bites.  Some larger fish were lost insofar as these fish are around structure like rocks and reefs and after a slamming stike, they freight-train back to cover easily busting and cutting lines.

Hopefully, this is the start of a nice yellowtail season if the winds give us more breaks.  This coming week, actually looks like the winds will dial back a bit.  Not ideal, but more fishable than it has been for any extended period.

ROAD DIARY 2022

Just finishing up another good show here at the Washington State Fairgrounds for the Washington Sportsmans Show.  So great to see so many old friends and Tailhunter Nation!  Thanks for coming by and we’re looking forward to seeing many of you who reserved spots to come see us this year in La Paz!

By the time you’re reading this, we’ll be on the road and zooming to our next show which is the huge Western Hunt and Conservation Show at the Salt Palace downtown in Salt Lake City UT.  This will be possibly the largest show on our 2022 road tour and it’s ALWAYS fun and one of the most dynamic shows in which we exhibit.

WHALEWATCHING SEASON KICKS OFF!

It’s been breezy in Bahia Magdalena for the whalewatching this year, but on the calm days, the whales have been more than cooperative to come visit with the boaters!

Someone needs a nose scratch!

The grey whales have shown up for their annual migration from the Bering Sea to spend the winter months in the warm waters at Bahia Magdalena.  It’s a pretty incredible experience to see and interact with these magnificent animals in the shallow bay.

We actually tried to send out some boats this past week. Everyone was informed that it might be very windy and rough, but they wanted to give it a go. One day they had to cancel because of the winds. Another day, the only got to fish a few hours then were blown off by the winds. They got one bite from an unknown fish and lost it. That was it. Another day, was also a cancelations.

Just not a great time to be on the water. Air temps are sunny and warm going up to the low 80’s in the day, but the north winds continue to be pesky and prohibitive. Mostly the only folks fishing right now are some of the commercial guys as well as some of our captains with family or friends for sustenance during the off-season which runs November to April.

Live bait has also been an issue because with so very few folks on the water, it’s not economical for the bait guys to work all morning to get bait they can’t sell to anyone or they have trouble getting the bait because the areas holding bait are too rough.

The few catches that are being made are mostly the usual inshore stuff. Generally small snapper, some cabrilla and pargo. Peripherally hooking jack and bonito.

Busted the glass, the wrap, the pistons AND the tailgate!

In case you hadn’t heard, we are finally back on the road and headed to our third show which will be at the Washington State Fairgrounds in Puyallup WA.   More on that below.

 

However, we wanted to give a shout-out to all of our Tailhunter Tribe, Family and Friends who came to our rescue.  Last week during the show in Sacramento, our Tailhunter vehicle got broken into.  Nothing taken, but the intruders pretty much destroyed not only the glass and custom wrap but also the pistons and part of the tailgate.

The vehicle was not driveable and had to be towed.

We have more than 2 more months of shows to attend and were initially told that parts and repairs might take as much as 3 weeks!  There were simply no parts in Sacramento because of supply chain issues.  One part was all the way in Michigan.  The one tech who could do the repairs was TWO months backed up with work!

Jill worked like crazy on the phones with dealers and found Epic Chevy in Sacramento who went above-and-beyond.  They found subcontractors in other cities who had parts and they all pulled together to get the parts expedited to the Chevy dealer where a tech put us to the head of the line and worked all weekend to get us on the road!

Instead of 3 week, it was done in 5 days!

Good job, Jilly. She used to work in the car industry for 20 years and dug deep to get us back on tour!

However, so many of you offered cars, trucks, trailers, your homes, your connections and even meals to help us get through or get back on our show circuit!  The out-pouring was incredible.  We are more than touched and grateful and you humbled us with your thoughtfulness!  God bless you all for being angels when we needed you!

On a side note, we’ve been doing the show in Sacramento for over 20 years.  Never had an issue.  But, sad and distressing to see the area around the fairgrounds.  Lots of homeless living everywhere and pretty much anywhere they decide to set up a camp or boxes on the sidewalk or a parking lot. Vagrants walking all over.  Folks living in derelict cars.  At the stores and markets, there are no baskets or carts…they have all been stolen.

One of our good friend who is an hunting outfitter in Idaho had his whole rig stolen from the parking lot. One of our clients was carjacked at gunpoint by a guy fleeing a murder.

So sad to see the deterioration.   Praying and hoping for better!

A rare calm day, but there’s marlin in our waters!

Captain Pancho was out on his own with family friends near Bahia Muertos when he hooked this baby sailfish. An unusual catch in the winter. The fish was released and they went home with some cabrilla and pargo for dinner.

Unexpected biter on light tackle!

A windy week again and even a bit of rain this past week. Most of the winds are still coming from the north between 10 and 20 mph with some stronger gusts making it difficult to be on the water. Air temps are running from the low 60’s at night to the mid-70’s in the daytime.

There were a few very small windows to fish. Either because the winds diminished a bit (but it was still rough) or at least to get out for a very short time before the winds pushed everyone off the water.

Most of the fishing has been inshore since captains are hesitant to either go out too far where it can be rough or staying inside just-in-case the winds kick up. Also, if the winds are blowing, it’s difficult for the bait guys to get live bait so slow trolling inshore with crank baits or similar is often the only way to catch fish. However, catches inshore can still be fun with sierra, jacks, small bonito, cabrilla and snapper.

Mostly, it’s the captains, their friends and other locals fishing.

There must be some warmer water outside because on those rare occasions when the boats can push out a little further, there are some dorado hanging out. Either holdovers from last season or that have arrived early for the 2022 season! Who knows?

The biggest surprise were finding billfish in our waters so early in the season.  Normally, we don’t see billfish until maybe May or even June depending on the water temperatures.  But, in the small windows of fishing opportunity the last few days, the guys are hooking striped marlin.  Again, there must be some warm water around and obviously, a food source for the billfish!

But, still a nice surprise.

SACRAMENTO INTERNATIONAL SPORTSMANS EXPO

We just wrapped up a fantastic show at the Reno Convention Center in Reno, Nevada for the Wild Sheep Foundation last week.  With all the shows closed down for almost two years, it’s a crapshoot wondering if anyone will show up, but we had lots of attendees and hundreds of exhibitors so thanks to everyone who stopped by to say hi…grabbed a brochure…and for those who booked with us!  We’re looking forward to the visit!

This week, we are back in the booth at the International Sportsman’s Expo taking place Thursday to Sunday at the Calfornia State Fairgrounds in Sacramento.   It’s the biggest show in California now and I’ve heard there’s over 600 exhibitors from all over the world for fishing, camping, hunting, boating, RV’s, off-road, seminars, demonstrations and more!  Stuff for the whole family!

First-timers to visit us, Jackie and Jose Gochoco from Arizona got in 3 days of fishing and got quite a variety of fish like these from their first day with lots of sierra, snapper, bonito, a palometa and pargo.

Frequent Tailhunter flyer…I think this is his 3rd visit this year…Marcus Yoo visited us via Nicaragua and Costa Rica before spending 2 days fishing and nailed at least a dozen sierra each day as well as other species.

From Chicago, good amigo, Bob Sayre, who went out to kill a couple of hours fishing just inside the bay and found dorado under the cruise ships parked just off the Malecon! You can see the bow of one of the big ships in the upper right corner.

Alaska first-time visitors from Wrangell, Caroline and Travis Bangs with daughter with 3 year-old, Remi, had one so-so day when the winds blew, but followed it up with a nice day with Captain Jorge and a rack of sierra plus a nice bull dorado that they donated all of the fish.

Given the strong winds that normally go along with this time of year, we had some overall very mild conditions this past week. It was still breezy but with temperatures in the sunny 80’s it was good enough to accommodate the few folks that wanted to go fishing. Not too many folks fishing between November and April because of the weather so it was nice to have a bit of a reprieve around Thanksgiving.

There were still a few days there where the winds were blowing pretty rough which not only made for tough fishing, but also made it difficult to get bait. It’s a big issue when the winds blow.

However, for the few folks we had out, there was some surprisingly decent fishing. If the fish weren’t big, at least they were lively and fun. Lots of big sierra were hooked, but also a nice variety of big bonito; snapper, cabrilla, pargo, jack crevalle and even a few amberjack. Nothing huge, but fun inshore fishing and lots of good eating fish as well. We even had a few dorado here and there which is indicative of some patches of warmer water still lingering.

In fact, although it could be very  windy outside of La Paz Bay, some schools of dorado were found just off the city beaches under the big cruise ships and tankers that anchor-up within site of the Malecon. The big ships attract bait and obviously, the dorado which produced some fun 10-15 pound fish. A good alternative for a short day of fishing or trying to fish outside in the big waves.

Looking like the winds could be coming back fairly strong at the end of this week.   We’ll keep you posted!

Washington amigo, Fred Cruz had quite a great few days fishing with us taking a number of species including sailfish, marlin, roosterfish and others like this dorado taken north of La Paz Bay.

Honeymoon first-timers, Lilia and Dave Brown from Wrangell, Alaska hooked this large striped marlin just off Punta Arenas on live bait. They donated all the meat to the pueblo.

Captain Raul with Lisa Cruz and a big bull her first day out. She had 4 banner days on the water with us.

That’s right, John, flex-up! Especially after a great day like this on ultra- light tackle with big sierra, dorado, pargo and snapper. John McLucas has fished with us for many years from the San Francisco Bay area.

Just a pretty photo on so many levels of this roosterfish with Deana Wilson from Montana and Captain Pancho. The fish was caught just off the rocks near Bahia Muertos and quickly released.

Steve Manney has fished many years with us, but had his son-in-law Nat come down this year as well. Good start to the fishing week with dorado and sierra on the rack.

From N. Carolina, 84-year-old Duane Ottman was visiting us for the first time and battled this big striped marlin with Captain Gerardo. Great colors. Sorry, you can’t see Duane’s smiling face!

Good to see Kirsten and Mike Hanson back down here with us again. They were out with Captain Gerardo and got quite a variety of reef fish for the cooler.

Another of our good Washington amigos, Bob Larson has himself a big dorado, some tasty sierra and some big fat triggerfish.

Captain Joel gives Larry Wilson a hand with his sailfish for a quick photo. This was Larry’s first billfish. Note the tanker in the background. The fish was hooked literally just a few hundred yards in front of the La Paz Malecon.

Captain Armando and Pete Walker share a laugh and photo with the day’s catch. Lots of sierra again this week. More than I have ever seen.

It was a slow day, but the one saving catch for Brad Baker was his first sailfish. He donated all of the fish.

On his honeymoon, Sean Price spent a day fishing with our Las Arenas fleet and got some great sierra, pargo and triggerfish to take home as well as some dorado meat as well.

 

She’s the best! Sharon Virgin from Montana was great to have down this past week and holds up one of her dorado.

Lilia and Dave had a super day on the water fishing out’ve La Paz this particular day. All the fish were donated.

 

 

It wasn’t a bad week of fishing. Overall, it was actually pretty good. For lack of a better word, it was just “erratic”. It was unpredictable.

Some folks had great days of fishing. Others really had to work hard to get fish. Same day. Same spots. Same bait. Same everything. Things changed from day to day or even hour-to-hour. Totally un-predictable.

Some of our regulars…some of our very experience fishermen found picky fishing at best. Conversely, some of our first-timers or novices just crushed the fishing.

Some days, it was dorado. Next day no dorado. Then billfish. Then no billfish. At times, the best we could do was go to the rocks and have fun with pargo, cabrilla, triggerfish and snapper. Those are always willing to bite.

Everyone got fish. No mistaking that. But, it was just hard to put-a-finger on the bite or predict anything.

Definitely, the seasons are changing. Water is getting cooler down deep. The air is cooler. The north winds are picking up much earlier than usual. And that’s affecting the fishing. As the air and water gets erratic so goes the fishing.

It’s clear by the type of fish that are starting to show up. More cooler water fish are in the counts. A tremendous number of sierra started showing up about 10 days ago. More sierra than I have ever seen in several decades here. Normally, these fish don’t show up until late November of December. But, they’re here now and they are thick. Usually, we’ll get a handful a day. This year, each panga might get a whole boat-load of them in a single day and they are also much larger than usual.

Additionally, we’re getting the occasional yellowtail, rainbow runner, pompano and other cooler water species.

We’re coming to the end of the warm-water season, it appears. Not sure how much longer the warm-water species will be here. We’ll keep you posted.

NOTE: MARLIN and SAILFISH PHOTOS! Folks…before you send me e-mails or post up hate messages, please take notice that there are ALOT of billfish photos in this report. These represent perhaps 5% of the billfish that our fishing fleet hooked this past week. There are THAT many billfish out there. Some days, the waters are thick with billfish. Many times our anglers are NOT trying to catch billfish. But the billfish are biting. The vast majority of the fish that we hook are released by our anglers or (being big fish), they break off or get unhooked). In many cases, the billfish you see here were unable to be released or, after the photo was taken, the fish were indeed returned to the water. In many cases, when the fish was not or could not be released, the meat was donated to local folks who were very grateful for the meat. But, that being said, anglers are entitled to keep a billfish if they did want to keep one and we are very stringent about never exceeding the billfish limits.

Marius came all the way from South Africa to spend two weeks fishing with us every-other-day. He was so impressed, he purchased property in La Paz! He caught lots of dorado and on this particular day hooked, landed and released four billfish all on light tackle including this striper.

Jeanne Cabales had to cancel her yearly trip last year, but is always fun to have visit. She’s pretty excited about these nice dorado. Jeanne is from San Diego.

Not too many funnier guys to have visit us each year than Sal Lopez with another dorado in the boat with our La Paz fleet.

Young Jacob Radloff from northern California…first day…fishing in the rocks in shallow water hooks his first marlin! You don’t have to go a zillion miles out to find big sportfish!

Bo Henke has been fishing with us for a generation every year. He always does well. Here with his son Gio and two of his box of dorado for the day. Loves fishing with Captain Chito.

Jose Mohler from Carlsbad CA had just one day to squeeze in for fishing and had a pretty good day of it with one of several dorado in the photo.

Captain Raul took Luis Arandia out for several days. One of them produced this striper. They took a number of dorado as well. Luis has been fishing with us for years and owns his own high end clothing line. Most of this marlin was donated.

My San Diego “bruddah” from Hawaii has never taken a straight-faced fishing photo in all the years he’s fished with us. This pargo is headed home in the box.

Molly and Travis came all the way from Texas with just one day to fish. They wanted to do some inshore fishing and had alot of action with cabrilla, snapper and triggerfish.

One of our long-standing amigos for so many years came back to see us and got a load of dorado over two days. Hector Chacon from Arcadia CA came down with his dad. Always good to see him.

Dan Sayin and son Aidan squeezed in a day of fishing at the end of their vacation and found a productive day on the dorado schools. Both are from Carlsbad CA.

With the full moon earlier in the week, the fish counts took a tiny bit of a dip, but overall, it was just a nice solid summer week of fishing.  It was hot, humid and sunny.  Waters were blue and warm and mostly it was pleasant vacation style fishing which is perfect for most folks that are here right now.  Lots of couples and families.  Lots of first-timers experiencing Mexico and salt-water fishing for the first time.  Quite a few kids.  So the kind of fishing we had was pretty much just-right!

Dorado made up the mainstay of the catch, especially for our Tailhunter fleets that fish out’ve La Paz.  Most of the fish were perfect fun-sized 10-20 pounders with the occasional larger fish.  Schools were scattered over a wide area and could provide crazy action if the right school was found.

Sometimes a boat didn’t do as well as other boats, but the next could could be the exact opposite or the boat that didn’t bring back much fish might be because they tied into the other pre-dominant species we had this week…billfish.

Once again, as has been the case for the last two months, we’re seeing more marlin and sailfish than we have ever seen in many seasons.  Often, whether you wanted one or not, it was not unusual to hook a billfish…or two…or three!

Many times the anglers are trying to catch a dorado or some keeper fish and along come the marlin and bites and they are in the middle of dorado or bonito or other species.  The billfish comes along eating the bonito or the dorado and even the little sardine bait on the tiny hook and light line!  Then, the angler is in for a crazy long battle or the fish gets off.  It makes for some fun fishing and there is always the unexpected anxiety of not knowing just what is going to bite if you have a line in the water.

Most of the billfish were released or broke off.  For all the photos, it represents only a fraction of the billfish that were hooked.  If a fish could not be released, more-often-than-not the anglers donated the meat.

Other than dorado and billfish, the rest of the catch included roosterfish which are surprisingly still around with fish up to 40 or 50 pounds as well as jack crevalle, bonito, snapper, pargo and a few other random species. No shortage of action, especially if you’re fishing several days.

Like I said, you could have an off-day here or there, but if you’re fishing several days, the other days might well make up for it.

By the way, beaches have been re-opened and alcohol sales in restaurants and markets are now back to 11 p.m. instead of the 8 p.m. cut off. 😁👍

GOOD FULL MOON MID-SUMMER ACTION

Hector Chacon from Arcadia CA used to visit us every year for many years, but missed the last 5. He finally made it back to us and started out with a nice catch-and-release roosterfish fishing with Captain Jorge.

Tannier Pierson from San Diego was a billfish magnet for a few days. I think I heard he hooked one or two billfish a day including this one with Captain Pancho. All were released or broke off.

Smiles say it all. Megan Graves from San Diego while staying at Rancho Costa in Bahia Muertos poses with a fresh bull mahi.

One of the nicest all-time amigos, Rafael Rios fishing every year with us and hails from Corpus Christi TX. Good way to start the say with an early morning bull mahi! Pretty shot. We cooked up a bunch of it at our Tailhunter Sea Level Restaurant.

He said it was his best fishing day ever.  Captain Raul lends a hand. They also caught dorado.

Catching a marlin is quite a feat. Catching one on a flyrod is incredible, but that’s what Greg Wetherbee from Colorado did with this pretty fish and Captain Rogelio. Greg Released the fish and over 5 days with his flyrod also caught numerous roosterfish, jacks, bonito, dorado and others. All released.

Just one day to squeeze in a day of fishing with us, Howie Cohen, had some fun with 4 droado plus snapper and cabrilla. Howie is from Alpine CA. He was fishing around Espirito Santo Island with Captain Raul.

Dan Jenkins staying at Rancho Costa Resort at Bahia Muertos looks pretty happy with his roosterfish! The fish was released.

It wasn’t a spectacular week of fishing by any means, but it was a good solid fun summer week fishing.  Even with a full moon.  Just fun!  No real surprises.  Everyone who wanted fish caught fish.  Everyone who wanted to bring home fish, brought home fish.  Everyone who wanted to bring some fish to have cooked up back on shore, had fish to cook up.

Some folks caught the bucket list they always wanted.  For some, it was a billfish like a marlin or a sailfish.  For others it was that first roosterfish. For others, they targeted dorado.  If it wasn’t their bucket list fish, for some, it was the biggest fish they had every caught.

Indeed, roosterfish, marlin and dorado were the three pre-dominant species of the week.  But the action was rounded out with good rod-bending on jack crevalle, bonito, triggerfish, cabrilla, pargo and snapper.  Bait was not an issue.

Lots of smiles and good action.  Can’t ask for more!

If anything, the biggest issue we had was mid-week when a hurricane way way way down south and headed out to Hawaii sent some big swells up the Sea of Cortez making it more than a bit bump and rough for our boats fishing out of La Arenas and damping down the bite.  Conversely, the more protected waters north of La Paz produced better fishing during those days.  When the seas calmed down so did the bite and right back to normal.

It’s really HOT and humid these days.  Anyone coming down is advised to stay hydrated!  Not kidding.  Easy to get sick if you’re not drinking lots of water.  Unfortunately, beer and margaritas don’t count!

NORTHERN WINDS START UP BUT FISH BITE

Yup…those are yellowfin tuna! Only the 2nd batch of tuna we have seen all season in a STRANGE year! Leif Dover from Atlanta GA and Mark Bronge from Los Angeles CA went south almost to the northern east cape to find the fish as well as a nice dorado and a big triggerfish. The next day, winds came up and they weren’t able to get to the spot again.

Surprising to still find roosterfish this late in the season, but Mark caught and released his first rooster just off Punta Perrico.

Our amigo, Gary Wagner, from Colorado loves to fish the twilight bite when staying at his Rancho Costa Resort in Muertos and shows off a tasty barred pargo.

Captain Alfredo helps Alla Cazier from Arizona on her first trip to La Paz and found some nice dorado north of La Paz.

Oh yea, this is the right kind! Leif has a big dog-tooth snapper on the gaff caught the last of 6 days on the water with us.

 

If you find the right spot, the dorado can go nuts! First day success for Leif and Mark with some good-looking mahi on the cutting table.

Well…we can definitely tell the seasons are changing. The air temps are getting cooler with the highs this last week a really comfortable 85 on the average and really pleasant evenings.

However, with the change in temperature, we’re also getting more winds, especially the north winds that blow from about November to April that can make fishing a little bumpy and choppy. It can also hinder our ability to get to certain fishing holes and even to get to the places where we get live bait.

That’s what happened this past week. We had 2-3 days of pretty good windy conditions and whitewater on the ocean. For better-or-worse, not too many folks fishing this week which will be typical as we get closer to the holidays. More snowbirds looking for sunshine coming to town than anglers. More walk-in anglers to our offices and folks just looking for one day of fishing out on the water.

All that being said, there was still some excellent fishing to be had. Some boats did better than others. Some area were much more productive than others.

Our Tailhunter Las Arenas fleet had the most variety.

We actually got into some tuna…finally…after almost an entire season with no tuna. The guys had to run really far, however. They went south almost to the north end of the East Cape. They made it one day, but then after that, it was too windy to get there on subsequent days.

Still, there were some legit 10-20 pound dorado, cabrilla, snapper, jack crevalle, bonito, several types of pargo and we even got one big dog-tooth snapper as well pulled out’ve the rocks.

For our Tailhunter La Paz Fleet, several days, it was simply too windy. All whitecaps and rough water. However, there’s dorado right in the bay around where the big tanker ships are anchored off Punta Prieta only about 5 minutes from where we launch. There’s also sierra under those big boats.

Outside, seeing more marlin although we couldn’t get any of them to bite this week.

This coming week, it’s going to be breezy again, but not as bad as last week.

THE BIG PICTURE and the REST of the STORY…

First day, right off the bat. Andy Hail with a thick wahoo on the beach at Bahia Muertos.

Our own Jorge Romero cradles a big roosterfish. Unusual for these big guys to still be around. Jorge released the fish. See the next photo.

This past week presented us with another weird twist-and-turn in an already erratic and chaotic fishing season…and year.

All season, fishing has been up one week and down the next with no rhyme or reason. Fish that should be biting are scarce and the entire season has pretty much been taken up by dorado and roosterfish that should not even be around this late in the year. Frankly, we’re grateful for both because both fish have kept rods bent and people smiling.

With some additional catches of bonito, jack crevalle, pargo, cabrilla and snapper, that’s pretty much been the whole season.

Until this past week…with a full moon at that.

Fishing did not go wide-open. In all honesty, I can’t even say it was great fishing. However, numbers of fish have been replaced by quality.

Billfish started biting. We’re seeing striped marlin. We’re seeing big sailfish that are unusually larger than normal and have caught more sails in the last week than the last several years combined. The sailfish are easily in the 100 pound class or larger.

More exciting are the wahoo. Near the south end of Cerralvo Island and near Bahia Muertos, we’ve been seeing wahoo for a bit ,but they’ve been reluctant biters. This week, they went on the chew with boats often hooking (and often losing) multiple fish as the speedsters with sharp teeth tore into trolled lures. However, the fish have been legit 30-50 pound skinnies.

During this time, the dorado bite that has sustained us had dropped by 50%. Either it’s because the dorado just aren’t biting or folks are spending more time chasing the home run fish like the billfish and wahoo.

Hopefully, we’ll finally see some tuna which are way overdue!

BAJA LIFTS MORE RESTRICTIONS

In case you hadn’t heard, last Monday (Oct. 5), the government of Southern Baja (including the areas of La Paz, Cabo San Lucas, San Jose del Cabo, Todos Santos and the East Cape/ Los Barriles areas) eased up on more Covid Restrictions!

The danger level has gone from Red…to Orange…and now YELLOW (level 3).  More beaches are open.  Increased occupancy in hotels and restaurants, live music in clubs and restaurants and more!  All good news.

 

2021 BOOKING FILLING UP

Many of the folks who had to cancel their trips this year are already booking for next year and many dates are filled or filling.  Don’t wait to get your reservations in, especially if you have a certain hotel or captain that you want.  It doesn’t look like many of the sportsmans shows are being canceled so we probably won’t be on the road doing our fishing/hunting shows like we normally do.  So, get in touch with us.

We are also booking fishing for January to March plus whalewatching trips and fishing at Bahia Magdalena for 2021 as well.  Hope to see you!
