La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay/ Bahia Suenos Fishing Report from Tailhunter Sportfishing for Week of Feb. 8-15, 2023

PORT CAPTAIN BLOCKS BOAT TRAFFIC

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay/ Suenos Bay Fishing Report for Week of Feb. 8-15, 2023

MEXICAN MINUTE LA PAZ FISHING REPORT

THE BIG PICTURE and the REST of the STORY…

Not much to report from La Paz.  I wish I did!

A good portion of the week, the port captain shut things down for the port because the winds made it too precarious to be out on the water.  So, that meant no boat traffic coming or going.  Pretty hard to fish or do much else when you can’t get on a boat.  Even after the port was opened, most operators and outfitters in town had already cancelled scheduled trips not knowing when the port captain would open things up again.  So, unless you were a windsurfer or kite boarder, you really didn’t have many options except sit by your hotel pool with a cold one.
We don’t usually have many bookings between November and April because of the rough weather, but the few we had this week all had to be cancelled because of the winds.

THE PARTY IS BACK!

For the first time in years, they’re bringing back the the La Paz Carnaval!
It’s going to be a mega-party lasting until next Tuesday with food, rides, parades, concerts and the biggest street fair of the year.  After being shut down for covid, the town is ready to bust out for carnaval.
The parades go right by our Tailhunter Restaurant and having multiple stories, we have a great grandstand to the fun on the street!
If you’re in town this week, come by and come down to enjoy th festivities!

GREAT TO BE IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA AGAIN!

After a month of shows in snow, winds, ice, rain and hail,  it’s nice to be back in Southern California again and see the beach and put on the shorts and flip-flops!
From Thursday to Sunday, we’ll be in our booth at the Del Mar Fairgrounds in San Diego right on the beach for the Bart Hall Fishing and Boating Show.  You may remember these as the Fred Hall Shows.  After a 3 year-hiatus, the shows are back and we’re excited to be back for the first of 4 shows in Southern Cal.   So, come out and say hi and let’s set you up for visiting us in La Paz in 2023!
That’s our story!

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay/ Suenos Bay Fishing Report from Tailhunter Sportfishing for Week of Feb. 1-7, 2023

MORE WIND and EVEN SOME RAIN KEEPS

FOLKS OFF WATER

La Paz – las ARenas/ Muertos Bay/ Bahia Suenos Fishing Report for Week of Feb. 1-7, 2023

MEXICAN MINUTE LA PAZ VIDEO REPORT

THE BIG PICTURE and the REST of the STORY…

It’s sounding like a broken record lately, but often, it’s important to report what is NOT happening  so folks get the whole picture.

Basically, fishing was NOT happening this past week, but it has not really been happening for weeks as winds kept things rough and blustery as often happens between November and April.  It’s off-season specifically for that reason.   It’s too rough to be out unless you’re a windsurfer or kiteboarder.

However, this past week even witnessed rainfall as well on-and-off for two days.

Just being honest.  I tell everyone before they book with us this time of year that weather can be “iffy.”  We had folks interested in fishing and others who were hoping to get out diving and snorkeling.  In all situations, when we saw the weather forecasts, we told them it was not going to happen.

This coming week doesn’t look much better.  Although there’s no rain in the extended forecast, as of this writing, the port captain has shut down all boat traffic until further notice . That means no boat traffic is allowed in or out of the harbor because of the winds.

Hopefully, things will calm down a bit soon because we do know that there’s fish to be caught.  That includes dorado, sierra, jacks, yellowtail, pargo, snapper, cabrilla and even some wahoo.  However, as long as there are storms happening north of the border, it will have an effect on the weather down in our areas.

WHALESHARK SEASON CANCELLED

Swimming with the whalesharks will have to wait this year.  Normally, the season runs October to April.  However, because of lack of animals, the season wasn’t even opened until December.

Normally, the animals are hanging out in the shallow waters of La Paz Bay.  However, because there are so few whalesharks, the remainder of the whaleshark season has been suspended until further notice.

THANK YOU SALT LAKE CITY!

Good to see old friends and meet new ones at the Western Hunt Show. Our amigos here are all celebrating the fact that all of them will be coming to see us this June!

Thank you to everyone who came to visit us at the massive Western Hunting Expo in downtown Salt Lake City.  Wow!  What a great show and so great to chat with so many of you.  Estimates that almost 50,000 attendees came to the show over 4 days!  Just incredible.  Here we are re-packing our booth.

We are now on the road having left the snows of Salt Lake City and headed towards S. California for the Bart Hall Fishing & Boating Show in San Diego at the Del Mar Fairgrounds.

After a 3 year hiatus, the Hall Shows are back and everyone is excited.  This will be the first of 3 shows in S.California and we hope to see you there!

So, we’re brushing off the snow and headed to sunny So. Cal!

See you soon!

That’s our story!

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay/ Suenos Bay Fishing Report from Tailhunter Sportfishing for Week of Jan. 23-30, 2023

NOT MUCH HAPPENING EXCEPT COLD and

WINDY

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay/ Suenos Bay Fishing Report for Week of Jan. 23-30, 2023

MEXICAN MINUTE LA PAZ VIDEO REPORT

THE BIG PICTURE and the REST of the STORY…

As you can tell, it’s not the best weather for fishing looking at the sky and also how the guys are bundled up, but a nice variety of fish on one of the day when the wind didn’t blow so hard. In addition the yellowtail, there’s a couple of nice cabrilla, a sierra, a snapper and a bonito.

It’s a bit awkward when you’re the captain and guide and YOU catch fish, but the local client can’t hook any! Captain Pancho was just off the rocks at Bahia Muertos when he hooked this while jigging in the rough water. Again, you can tell it’s not the greatest weather.

Gary and Miles Wagner at Gary’s place at Rancho Costa in Bahia Muertos got out on one of the better days and got some tasty pompano and a tuna which are unusual to hook this time of year.

This is that time of the year from November to April when the fishing reports and not only boring to read, but also kinda boring to write!  But, sometimes, maybe it’s just as important to tell you what is NOT happening.  Especially, if you’re planning to visit on a vacation.

It was another especially cold and windy week with some gusts up to about 25 mph at times with cloudy skies and cold temps that kept even alot of locals inside and had us lighting our sidewalk heaters at our Tailhunter Restaurant on the La Paz waterfront.

There were a few little gaps here and there and it’s mostly locals fishing who have the ability to get out for a few hours of fishing then run quickly back in when it gets blustery or can check the weather forecasts and pick specific days to get on the water.

Reports from them as well as friends who are commercial fishermen (who HAVE to go out to make al living) indicate that there’s a little jag of tuna at the south end of Cerralvo Island if you can make that bumpy ride across the channel.

There are also a few stray dorado here and there.  However, most of the catch has been yellowtail, some smaller amberjack, sierra, bonito, snapper and cabrilla…all inshore fish.

Live and dead bait as well as jigs have worked best.

WESTERN HUNT & CONSERVATION EXPO

This coming week, the Tailhunter Show Tour takes us to Salt Lake City for the massive Western Hunt & Conservation Expo.  Always a giant show with almost 1000 exhibitors, vendors, outfitters, guide services and more covering the floor of the Salt Palace Convention Center in downtown Salt Lake City.

We’re looking forward to seeing so many of our Tailhunter Tribe members who always come to visit and book their trips for 2023.  Jill and I will be in the booth every day from Thursday to Sunday, Feb. 2-5.  We hope to see you there.

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay/ Suenos Bay Fishing Report from Tailhunter Sportfishing for Week of Jan. 15-22, 2023

COLD and WINDY WEEK BUT…

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay/ Suenos Bay Fishing Report for Week of Jan. 15-22, 2023

MEXICAN MINUTE LA PAZ VIDEO REPORT

THE BIG PICTURE and the REST of the STORY…

Local La Paz amigos out’ve Bahia Muertos with a great day catch of cabrilla, sierra, bonito and even a couple of dorado!

Fernando was out with our Captain Pancho and was able to get across the channel to the south side of Cerralvo Island and got this hefty slugger yellowfin tuna on dead sardines.

As storms battered much of the U.S. this week, especially the west coast, it also had an effect on Baja and for us in La Paz.  For most of the week it was cold and windy so fishing opportunities were limited which is pretty typical for this time of year.

Most of the folks who were out are locals who have flexible schedules and can pick-and-choose which days or even what hours are best for diminished winds.

Not surprisingly, there are fish to be caught.

If you can make your way across the rough channel to the south end of Cerralvo Island, there has been a little jag of 50-100 pound tuna.  Nothing wide open, but a few have been hooked, especially by commercial panga fishermen.   But, it can be a really rough ride out there especially with the winds roaring down the channel.

Not surprisingly, however, there is a nice mix of fish closer inside including sierra, jacks, cabrilla, snapper and even some dorado which is surprising and leads me to believe there’s still some warm water patches around.  Bait is not a problem and jigs and lures are working effectively also.

THANK YOU RENO!

Thanks to everyone who came to visit us at our booth in Reno, Nevada last week for the Wild Sheep Foundation Show at the Reno/Sparks Convention Center.  It was great fun and great chatting with lots of old and new amigos and glad many of you signed up to come down.

It was also fun (for us, but maybe not for alot of others) to get snow.  Living in Mexico, it’s quite a novelty to get snow, but know that last week wasn’t fun for many of our friends especially in California with all the rain and snow.

This is the view from our hotel room as the snow started to fall about 2 hours into a 2 day storm in Reno.

Our next show is a BIG ONE.  One of the largest we will have this year. It’s the

WESTERN HUNT & CONSERVATION SHOW

Feb. 2-5

SALT PALACE CONVENTION CENTER

SALT LAKE CITY UT

This is a view of only about 1/3 of the show floor

It’s our only show in Utah this year, but it’s massive and if you’re anywhere near the area, you can spend all 3 days in the show and still never see all the hunting, fish, camping, RV’s and more.  We’ll be in our booth all 3 days to talk about coming to La Paz.  Just look for the booth that has a bunch of our Tailhunter Nation friends hanging out there!

We’re filling up really fast so let us know if you want to come visit us this year to come fishing!

STILL WINDY BUT SOME SURPRISE TUNA POP

UP!

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay/ Suenos Bay Fishing Report for Week of Jan. 8-14, 2023

MEXICAN MINUTE LA PAZ VIDEO REPORT

THE BIG PICTURE and the REST of the STORY…

Our amigo and owner of famous Giggling Marlin Bar in Cabo, Gary Wagner (r) was hosting some friends at his place at Bahia Muertos Rancho Costa including former Golden State Warrior Clifford Ray had quite a day. They found a window between bouts of wind and got over to Cerralvo Island where they hit snapper, sierra and surprising yellowfin tuna.

_________________

We had the usual windy rough conditions most of the week, but earlier in the week some windows of opportunity popped up and we got some friends out from Bahia Muertos.  They tell me there’s a ton of sardines out there and the waters are loaded with sierra.  They got out to the south end of Cerralvo Island and found some 50-pound grade yellowfin tuna on dead sardines.  Plus added in some pargo and sierra as well. Winds came up later in the week again and shut things down.

It’s been mostly sunny with temperatures in the high 70’s in the days and in the high 50’s at night.  The extended forecast is showing the winds will be down early in the week, but mid-week the winds will really ramp up and there’s a good chance the port captain will shut down boat traffic and close the port.

TAILHUNTER ROAD TOUR 2023 DOWN THE ROAD…

We’re just finishing up an amazing showing at the Wild Sheep Foundation Convention at the Reno Convention Center.  Thank you to everyone who came to visit us in our booth and welcome to our old and new Tailhunter amigos.  To many of you, thank you especially for your reservations!  We’re looking forward to having you visit us this year in La Paz!

Here’s our show schedule for the next few weeks!  Hope we’ll see you at one of our shows.  But, don’t wait.  We’re filling up really fast so get in touch with us so we can set you up for fishing with us in La Paz.

FEW FISHERMEN OUT DUE TO WINDS BUT

FISH ARE THERE!

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay/ Bahia Suenos Fishing Report for Week of Jan.1-7, 2023

THE MEXICAN MINUTE LA PAZ VIDEO REPORT

THE BIG PICTURE and the REST of the STORY…

Gama Santiago (on the right) and his amigo, Ivan, bundled up and had a surprisingly good day and a great mix of fish including amberjack, dorado, yellowtail and bonito. The fish were caught with a mix of live sardines and also using vertical jigging.

Miles Wagner with dad, Gary, owner of Rancho Costa in Bahia Muertos were out jumping all over the sierra. Gary says there’s lots of bait and the sierra are thick!

Nice yellowtail hamachi of Gama. He was using a yo-yo jig on the fish.

A mostly sunny week with nice temps between the mid-50’s and mid-60’s, but still not many folks on the water because of northern winds roughing up the waters.  We had to cancel several trips because of it.

However, here and there some folks got out and found some windows of opportunity to get out in between gusts.  Many of the folks we do get out are locals who have the opportunity to have flexible schedules to find the better days or else tourists who have wiggle-room in their vacation agendas to avoid the windier times.

Surprisingly, there’s still some dorado around which are usually gone by October or November.  That leads me to believe there’s still some warm water patches here and there.  However, most catches were colder water fish like small yellowtail and numerous sierra as well as bonito, jacks and cabrilla.

There’s lots of live sardines around although yo-yo jigs have also been productive if you can keep them out’ve the rocky bottoms.

THANK YOU DALLAS SAFARI CLUB!

We just finished up the huge Dallas Safari Club Convention with over 1000 other outfitters, guides and charter operations from around the world and thousands of visitors over 4 days!  It was incredible and thank you Dallas for all the hospitality and everyone who came to visit and chat about fishing with us in La Paz!  We got alot of bookings for this season so we’re looking forward to seeing ya’ll later this year.

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay/ Suenos Bay Fishing Report from Tailhunter Sportfishing for Week of Dec. 21-31, 2022

U.S. WEATHER IMPACTS WEATHER SOUTH OF

THE BORDER

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay/ Suenos Bay Fishing Report for Week of Dec. 21-31, 2022

MEXICAN MINUTE VIDEO REPORT

THE BIG PICTURE and the REST of the STORY…

Again, not much to report.  Most of the past few days were again blown out by strong winds.

As I often mention, winter time, fierce north winds blow down the Sea of Cortez making it not only rough and choppy but at times unsafe, especially if you’re headed north of town since the winds come out’ve the north and you need to go north to get out’ve La Paz Bay.

Alot of folks coming down are here to grab some sunshine and there’s no shortage of that, but then are surprised about the winds.  Folks seem to think that weather stops being bad at the U.S. border.

Not so!  If there’s storms in the north as there have been the last few weeks in the states, then it has a direct affect on weather in Baja and Mexico.  In fact, the storms have been quite severe over the holidays and it’s been reflective on the winds in La Paz.  They have been stronger and more severe than normal.

About the only folks out are locals and commercial fishermen who either need to work to feed their families or can pick-and-choose which dates are better to be on the water given windows of calmer conditions.  I’m hearing there have been catches of sierra, some yellowtail, a few dorado (must be some warm water around), plus reef fish like snapper, triggerfish, cabrilla and some pargo.

The current forecast for the week shows more winds and maybe two days that are borderline in terms of getting on the water.  The last few weeks, we’ve had to cancel any reservations that were made.  These days it’s about a 50-50 chance of getting canceled or blown out.  Hate to be a buzzkill, but would rather be honest about expectations.

TAILHUNTER SHOW SEASON STARTING

Jill and I will be starting our annual 3 month show season on the road.  We’ll be in our booth meeting and greeting and looking forward to seeing you and talking about having you visit us in La Paz in 2023.

Our first show will be at the Reno Convention Center in Reno, Nevada for the Wild Sheep Foundation Show.  Big big show with lots to see for hunting, fishin, camping, travel and more!

Check out this great video that will tell you all about this show:

We hope to see you there in the new year and in La Paz in 2023!

The next show after that will be Feb. 2-5 in Salt Lake City at the Salt Palace Convention Center downtown for the Western Hunt and Conservation Show!

Happy and Blessed New Year to everyone!

WINDY AND QUIET

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay/ Bahia Suenos Fishing Report for Week of Dec. 13-20, 2022

MEXICAN MINUTE LA PAZ VIDEO REPORT

THE BIG PICTURE and the REST of the STORY…

Keaton Lesnik and his dad had just one day to squeeze in some fishing and happened to pick that ONE day that was nice enough to be out! Got themselves a couple of dorado that they had cooked up at our Tailhunter Restaurant.

___________________________

Not much to report.  About the only ones on the water this week seemed to be commercial guys who are working to catch fish to sell.  Or they were captains feeding their family or catching fish for the holidays or a few locals.  But, the thing with all of them is that they can pick-and-choose which days are better to be on the water.  Or, they know they can get out for just a few hours then come right back in with whatever they can catch if the winds kick up…and they often did.

For most, the winds were just too strong and the waters too rough this past week with just a few little windows of opportunity.  In fact, it was so windy the city of La Paz even cancelled the Christmas Boat Parade.  And that was INSIDE the harbor and bay!

But, there were some interesting catches.  Still seems to strangely be some dorado swimming around despite the weather and the fact that dorado season pretty much ended back in October.  Some nice 20-25 pound fish are still getting hooked, but most are the fun 10-pound-class fish.  As well, there are sierra, white bonito (good eating), jack crevalle, snapper and cabrilla reported this week. But, again, not many reports coming off the water since not many folks fishing and everyone getting ready for the holidays.

All is calm…all is bright on the La Paz Malecon

FROM OUR TAILHUNTER FAMILY TO YOURS…

“Christmas waves a magic wand over this world, and behold, everything is softer and more beautiful.”
Just hoping your holidays and Christmas is filled with blessings and all things good.  You are all a gift to us with all the smiles you bring!

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay/ Suenos Bay Fishing Report from Tailhunter Sportfishing for Week of Dec. 3-12, 2022

LA PAZ IS UNUSUALLY QUIET

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay/ Suenos Bay Fishing Report for Week of Dec. 3-9, 2022

MEXICAN MINUTE VIDEO REPORT

THE BIG PICTURE and the REST of the STORY…

Our very own, Jorge Romero who managers Tailhunter’s Tecolote Transportation Company took a day off to get out on the water and by all counts, he sure had a nice day on the dorado schools. He said not much of anyone else was on the water.

Eduardo Gomez, who works for Mattel Toys in Mexico, came out with his wife and caught a limit of dorado. All on live bait.

Since it’s off-season and not much of anyone fishing, Jorge  took another day off to get out on the water and racked this pretty bull dorado just south of Bahia Muertos. Jorge also said he had two wahoo bite him off and briefly had a marlin on the line as well.

________________________

Another typical windy rough week on the water, but that’s to be expected this time of the year. Town is surprisingly quiet as well. Normally, alot more tourists and snowbirds are around, but I’m hearing and seeing around the city and from businesses that it’s amazingly sedate this year. Certainly alot fewer than expected or normal for the holiday season.

Fishermen are few or non-existent as this time of year can be particularly rough and difficult to be on the water. About the only ones fishing are locals who have the luxury of being able to pick-and-choose the calmer days to give fishing a try. Even then, some of them are telling me it can get pretty rough even though the sun is out.

However, there are fish to be caught. Friends have caught good numbers of cold-water fish like sierra and small amberjack and yellowtail along with reef fish like pargo, snapper and cabrilla.

Nevertheless,  there’s an unusual number of dorado still hanging out if you can find the warm patches of water. I’ve even heard of an occasional wahoo or marlin getting hooked. Crazy that they are still around with the waters cooling off and turning greener. These are warm water fish and normally, we would have seen the last of them back in November.

That’s my story!

QUIET TIMES IN TOWN

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muerto Bay/ Suenos Bay Fishing Report for Week of Nov. 24-Dec. 2, 2022

MEXICAN MINUTE VIDEO REPORT

THE BIG PICTURE and the REST of the STORY…

Dave Wancyzk (middle) and two of his buddies are in town for work, but got away one day and found some nice dorado surprisingly.

More sierra like this one that Monty caught are showing up with more frequency now that the waters are getting colder.

Not much happening on the water.  Mostly folks in town for Thanksgiving holidays.  Had several folks interested in fishing this week, but winds changed their minds.   This coming week doesn’t look much better with most of the days gusting 15-20 mph.

We did get a couple of guys out for one day.  We had to juggle a bit to find a day that was least windy.  He had them fish with our Las Arenas fleet which is more protected and the fishing grounds are closer.  Surprisingly, so late in the season, but they got into some healthy legit dorado.  Warm water fish!  We figured dorado season kinda left us when things got cooler, but I guess there’s a few still hanging around.  Nice surprise.

Beyond that…it’s mostly cold water species.

Some of the locals and commercial guys are out catching snapper, cabrilla and sierra inshore.  Live bait is hard to get when the winds are blowing so mostly using frozen baits and lures.
Town is pretty quiet, but getting fuller for the holidays.  It’s kind of a real nice time to be around!
That’s my story!
