La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay Fishing Report from Tailhunter International for Week of Oct. 18-25, 2015

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

From Kaysville UT, Channing Herrera and son, Kyle, started their week of fishing with a one-hour frenzy of yellowfin tuna.

pargo patrick puhlmann Leonardo Tapia Nick Jones tags 10-15

Potential WORLD RECORD FISH on our certfiied IGFA scale…a 38.5 pound barred pargo (pargo mulatto). Matthew Deichsel shot the fish while freediving. He went back to the hotel to take a shower. His friends, Patrick Puhlmann with Pistoleros Del Mar here in La Paz, Nick Jones and Leo Tapia thought the fish might be a record so while Matt was in the shower, they ran to our place and we set up the certified scale! The old record on the speargun was just over 37 pounds. This one went 38.5 and is going to be submitted!

Fishing brings old friends and co-workers together! Tom Mullican from Idaho got together with his friend, John, all the way from New Jersey. Been friends for 40 years and they knocked out some great tuna out of Bahia de Los Muertos. Check out the big sierra as well. Normally, a cold water fish. The sierra is the 2nd fish from the right on the rack.

Raphael Rios from Texas and his amigos brothers  from Louisiana, Lindon “Lenny” Leishman and Allen “needlefish” Leishman,  flank Captain Jorge from our Tailhunter Las Arenas fleet and a good day of tuna fishing.

carl zilinski tags rooster 10-15

Our new good amigo, Carl Zilinski, came all the way down from Canada to get himself a roosterfish. I told him that there weren’t many around this late in the year, but he buckled down and went for it. He got a little 8-pounder the first day. Mission accomplished! However, his last day, he hit the home run with 2 big 50-pound roosters! All released.

One of the especially really great amigos of Tailhunter who visits us every year…twice this year…Dave Lindell from Pendleton OR with Captain Armando and a few of their yellowfin tuna.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

From Nebraska, Bryan Sanford, was on his first trip with us and came with brother Craig from Phoenix AZ who’s been with us numerous times. His very first fish turned out to be a striped marlin. Captain Armando helps out with the photo.

GRATEFULLY NO HURRICANE – LAS ARENAS TUNA BITE HIGHLIGHTS THE WEEK

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay Fishing Report for Week of Oct. 18-25, 2015

The 2015 fishing season is winding down for us here in La Paz.  Still plenty of fish to catch, but the end is pretty much like so much of the season…UNPREDICTABLE fishing and climate.  Weather is really nice now.  High 80’s and humidity dropping with great sunshine and waters still warm and light breezes.  About that breeze…

Thanks to all of you who wrote or called us to ask if we were OK with Hurricane Patricia that slammed into the Puerto Vallarta/ Manzanillo areas.  However we’re 500 miles away and were not affected by the storm which has been called the strongest hurricane on record in the western hemisphere.  Poor folks had 200 mile-an-hour-winds and lots of rain.  Thankfully, damage and injuries were much less than anticipated. As many will remember, only last year, Hurricane ODILE slammed into Southern Baja tearing La Paz, Cabo San Lucas and many areas up pretty badly.  In many ways, we’re still mending.

Fortunately, for us, Hurricane Patricia went south.

Still, it DID affect us.  Big wind and waves hit us late in the week.  I mean, big chop and big rollers unlike anything we get here!  Sea-sickness is not something we usually have to deal with here because water are so calm, but folks were taking dramamine and we had more than a few tell me they got queasy.  It was not easy fishing.  The upturned water also affected the fishing insofar as it make the waters dirty and moved the bait around which was harder to catch.  Our captains and fishermen really had to work hard for fish this week.

LAS ARENAS/ MUERTOS BAY

I think this is one of the few times this year where I can say the fishing was actually better in this area and with our fleet than with our La Paz fleet fishing north out’ve town.

Our Tailhunter Las Arenas fleet at least had the nicer football tunas to play with.  Fish in the 8-20 pound class at least put some quality fillets in the box.  It wasn’t wide open by any stretch, but the boats got 2-9 fish per day and it changed daily and from boat-to-boat often fishing right next to each other. Just came down to dumb luck sometimes with no rhyme or reason as to why one boat would get bit and others would goose-egg.  But, the fish were there and made for fun when mixed with the other species like bonito…some wahoo…as well as some decent billfish too!

LA PAZ

It was honestly a struggle this week.  La Paz fishing and our La Paz Tailhunter Fleet have been our wild card ace all year.  At least the small dorado would provide ready action and help fill the chests.  The fish were often close to shore and the bay and voracious.

This week, it was a struggle.  Bait was small and difficult to get.  The bigger body of fish was all the way on the other side of the bay near San Juan de la Costa…a pretty far run.

One of our pangas would get 6 or 7 dorado up to about 10 pounds and others would get 1, 2, 3 or even none…just lots of bonito biters.  Combined with the big winds and chop from Hurricane Patricia, it was not easy fishing.  Fortunately, that’s why we have two fleets and we had most of our folks fishing with our Las Arenas fleet so they at least had shots at tuna and wahoo.

GRACIAS!

Always so generous. From Pendleton, Oregon, Dave and Malina Lindell visit us every year…sometimes twice a year like this year! And, they have the biggest hearts in always bringing down things for the kids and families. Check out the cases of new toothbrushes, being held by Dave and Jilly! Much needed items!

Smiles for things they would not ordinarily be able to have for school. Simple notebook paper and pencils!

For over a year now, you, our awesome friends and fishing clients have been bringing us so many incredible donations for our Pack for a Purpose Program.  To date, there’s been over 2000 pounds of goods delivered and all gone to great use.

For those of you who don’t know, my wife Jill spearheaded the program and it basically works like this.  Folks are coming down to fish.  They bring down empty ice chests that they have to pay for anyway to bring down so they can haul fish home.  We ask that if you can, set aside a little space (doesn’t have to be much) and bring something down for some of our charities down here.  Every little thing counts.

Well, our Tailhunter Tribe has responded. Every week entire ice chests…full suitcases…boxes come in with so many fantastic things.  Every week, I post photos of some of our generous donors!

But, rarely do you folks get to see where all the good is being done.  This week, I posted up photos from the Care for Kids La Paz operation  where the most recent batch of donations went.  Donations go here as well as some impoverished schools out in the desert and also the battered women’s shelter.   We wanted you to see some of the smiles YOU all provided in a place where even a simple pencil  or toothbrushes and toothpaste can make a difference.

Also, many of our clients leave us money as well.  That money goes towards the FANLAP Scholarship program to help put kids through school. Here in Mexico, after 6th grade, education is not guaranteed and families must pay for further schooling.

Through this program, $300-40o puts a child through school providing uniforms, books, supplies, food and transportation FOR AN ENTIRE YEAR!  Thanks to you, we’ve got several elementary and highschool students who otherwise would not be going to school furthering their education.  They, in turn, must keep up their grades and are required to give back to the community and the FANLAP program doing things like tutoring other students.  http://www.lapazninos.org/our-programs/scholarship-program/how-the-scholarship-program-began/

Jill and I just wanted to say thank you!

That’s our story!

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay Fishing Report from Tailhunter Sportfishing for Week of Sept. 6-13, 2015

Leif amberjack tags 9-15

Leif Dover from Atlanta GA is our frequent amigo and frequently on our fishing reports as he fishes hardcore for a whole week every time. It paid off again with this big boy amberjack off Punta Perrico. Crazy fish because most of our ambers are caught in cooler water in the springtime. Great eating!

roger yellowtail tags 9-15

Another fish that we usually only find in the cooler waters of the winter and spring are the yellowtail, but if someone is gonna get one, Roger Thompson is probably the guy. Using blue and white jigs and bait, they hooked 5 and got 2 to the boat. He tells me if they had more bait, they would have gotten more. The area off the Las Arenas lighthouse is still the hotspot where the water drops off deep.

STAUFFER rooster 9-15 tags

Carol Hathaway Stauffer from Washington was visiting us for the first time and had herself quite a week. First dorado. First bonito. First time swimming with whalesharks and then, this fat roosterfish caught with Captain Victor and then released!

Donna tags amberjack 9-15

Don’t ever bet against Donna Thompson. She’ll probably always outfish you! She was working that deep water off Cerralvo Island and put the hurt on this great eating amberjack.

P9120134

One day there were these guys on the beach selling mustaches! So, Kevin Todd, our Texas amigo did some goofing for us and posed with his amberjack on the beach at Bahia de los Muertos! Or maybe he as hoping his boss wouldn’t see the photos and recognize he wasn’t at work!

Leif rooster tags 9-15

Pretty good week for roosterfish! Not as many around these days, as it’s late in the season for the exotic fish, but the ones that are around are good quality. Just like Leif Dover’s nice fish here (released). With all the rain lately, check out how green the hills are!

More dorado this past week. Decent steady dorado catches like Bob Pattersons fish here.

STEADY FISHING WITH VARIETY OF SPECIES

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay Fishing Report for Week of Sept. 6-13, 2015

Except for one day when it was “too calm”, we had pretty steady fishing all around.  Pretty typical of this time of year.  In addition to “too calm” (having a little current and breeze is important to get the fish to feed.  Too calm and they get lethargic. )  We did have some afternoon showers and frankly much of the week was overcast too, but hot and muggy.

Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay

On the days we fished there, everyone caught fish.  There was one day when everyone caught limits or near limits of dorado, but had to rush back to the beach a tad early when one of our tropical rainstorms came rushing in.  But it didn’t affect the fishing.  And the next day, we didn’t send any pangas out there because the waters were turned over and the road to the beach was a mud track. (So we sent everyone to fish La Paz and they all caught dorado anyway!).  But other than that, the dorado were fairly cooperative and a steady bite as the area gets more active than it has been this past summer.

Commercial guys got the occasional tuna, but none of the sport boats seemed to find them.  However, we did find the rooster fish willing to go.  Some nice ones again i the 20-50 pound class and we had anglers this week with light tackle and bass rods and throwing top-water lures so they had a hoot plus there were jack crevalle and bonito close to shore as well.

Update:  Just as I was writing this (Sunday) our Las Arenas boats had to come back early and get off the water when weather came up on them unexpectedly.  One of those quick tropical storms.  La Paz weather stayed good although some rain and breeze also hit and they kep fishing.

La Paz

Still our go-to spot.  If you want action and you want to catch a fish, you can spend almost all day on some of the areas holding dink 5-10 pound dorado.  The larger ones are more scarce, but they’re out there.  We lost a number of larger fish this week.  Hopefully, we’ll see more of them.

We also hit a few sailfish (released) , jack crevalle, big bonito and some smaller rooster fish.  Interestingly, also hooked a few sierra as well which is strange since they are cooler water fish that we normally catch in the winter.  Maybe it means the waters are cooling.  Again, it seem everyday there’s a possibility of afternoon rainstorms that come and go.

HIGH FIVE’S

Bud and Lisa wagner 9-15

Bud and Lisa Wagner with an ice chest full of school supplies!

Jeff Stauffer

Quite a stash. Thanks for Jeff and Carol Stauffer for the thoughtfulness! Not only school supplies but much needed hygiene things like toothpaste, toothbrushes, soap, deodorant and other things that will probably go to the battered women’s shelter.

WP_20150912_003

My good friend since 1st grade, Jim Weitkamp and his fiance Valerie Reyna brought us some great stuff for the kids.

Thanks to all our amigos who brought stuff down for our “Pack for a Purpose” program benefitting needy schoolkids as well as our battered women’s shelter.  Muchas gracias also to amigos who didn’t get their photos taken, but also brought much needed supplies including Ken Gragg and Carl Lange.

That’s our story!

The man behind the mask is Jorge Santana with a real surprising catch for August…yellowtail and two trophy cabrilla. All those fish are normally caught when the waters are much cooler in the winter and spring. He was fishing deep off the Las Arenas lighthouse where there must be a current of cold water holding the fish.

GOOD FISHING FOR DORADO AND ROOSTERS!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Aug. 22-29 2015

The dog days of summer are here.  It seems like almost every day is cooke-cutter.  All the same!  Sunny with temperatures in the high 90’s.  Occasional tropical thundershowers in the afternoons or evenings that come and go.  Sun pops back out leaving us with some spectacular sunsets.  Kids are back in school so the waters and beaches are emptying out.  Town is getting quiet again after the hubbub of summer vacation.  Tourist families are generally gone as well for the same reason…school starts!  So, mostly fishermen around.  And the fishing is pretty good.

LA PAZ

Solid dorado fishing.  Nothing wrong with that.  Most days, all the action you could want.  Good days to be on the water.

The dorado are ranging in size from 5-25 pounds.  Sometimes, it’s just hard to get away from the “doraditos!” (babies).  If you hit a spot, they are everywhere, they can be voracious.  The larger ones are around, but the kids are so thick and hungry, they don’t give the bigger ones a chance to get to your baits.  As one of our guys told us, “We released 10 before we got a larger one we wanted to keep and it’s sometimes hard to release the small ones because they don’t hesitate to swallow the baits and then the hooks are hard to get out.”

There are some larger fish getting lost.  But, it’s good to see larger fish around after a summer of so many little guys.  They do grow fast!

Again, there’s some huge bonito ripping things up as well. These fish fight like 30 pounders to most people although 12 pounds is about the true size.  Same with the big jack crevalle schools near the beaches along with some smaller roosters.

Hooked and lost several striped marlin this week again that bit light lines with live baits while fishing for dorado.

LAS ARENAS

The story continues to be rooster fish…big rooster fish in the area if you’ve ever wanted to nail one of these big exotic fish.  They are close and still willing to hit a bait.  They are almost all trophy-sized fish.  Rarely are we getting any that are under 30 pounds and most are 40-60 pounders.  All are getting released.

Good to also see a few more dorado and other species popping up as well. The captains put out about 30 semi-permanent buoys just offshore to act as FADS (Fish Attraction Devices).  And they’re working!  Normally, there’s commerical buoys out there most of the season, but for whatever reason, there weren’t quite so many out there so the sportfishing captains put them out themselves.  So, we’re seeing more dorado now…FINALLY and that might also have somethig to do with there being more bait available too.    Bonito, jack crevalle and snapper rounded out the fishing.

Again, just like last week, the surprise has been the yellowtail.  These are COLD WATER fish.  We get them in February to May…never in AUGUST!  Right now, the air temps are 100.  The water temps are 90.  The only thing I can think is that off the Las Arenas lighthouse (where the fish are located), there’s a cold current down deep.  No one is complaining.  It’s a nice bonus.  The ticket is finding mackerel either live or dead.  And that’s not so easy either because the mackies are usually around in the cooler water as well.  But, if you want a yellowtail and are willing to put in the time to catch a mackerel…a hour or two to catch a few…it’s spot-on for hooking a forkie right now.

SHOUT OUT

Big shout out to our “Pack for a Purpose”  good guys.  Brian and Marie McClanahan and Kip and Sue Slaugh all from the Salt Lake City area in Utah, hauled down several duffle bags filled with school supplies, health products (toothbrushes), notebooks, backpacks and other much-needed things for our kids.  Vong Mekdara also carried down a load of stuff.  As well, Steve Hartsook and Mike Jordan who have been visiting us for years filled up with great kid’s stuff. (Photographer’s error…the photo didn’t come out…but they deserve a big shout out too!)   Just in time since the school year is just starting down here and many kids don’t even have pencils.   We’re grateful for all the many many amigos and clients who have brought stuff over the months for the orphanage, schools and women’s shelters.  You’re the best!

SLAUGH MCCLANAHANS 8-15

The McClanahans and the Sloughs! Thank you!

VONG MEKDARA

Vong Mekdara from Monterey Park CA brought everything from pencil boxes to batteries and staplers to white glue!

CHANGE YOUR MONEY?

It’s not good for the Mexican economy, but great for tourists.  The Mexican pesos is dropping dramatically this year and seems to keep falling.  The current peso-to-dollar exchange rate was at 14…15…16..17 and might go as low as 18:1 (pesos to dollars).   That means that the purchasing power for tourist holding pesos is pretty good and makes Mexico a great vacation value.

For example, two years ago when things were at 10:1 (ten pesos per dollar), a cab ride costs, for example 100 pesos (10 dollars).  That same cab ride now at 100 pesos means it’s now only costing about 6 or 7 dollars!  A restaurant meal that cost $200 pesos or a t-shirt for $200 that was easy…it was $20 dollars U.S.  Those same items now would be only $12 or $14 dollars.

The downside is for something like say…tips for captains.  If you are used to giving your regular guy $400 pesos ($40 U.S. dollars) if you hand him 400 pesos now, you might get a little look of disappointment since now you are only tipping about $25 or 26 U.S. dollars.

So, give some consideration to changing your dollars to pesos when you’re at the airport or go to a money exchange place when you get to town.

That’s our story!

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay Fishing Report from Tailhunter International Sportfishing for Week of Aug. 9-16, 2015

yellowtail jorge tags 8-15

WHAT??? No, I didn’t poach this photo! We actually got yellowtail this week at the Las Arenas lighthouse and Jorge Romero, our good amigo, rocked 3 of them fishing deep using dead mackerel with fish up to 30 pounds. In 20 years here, I have NEVER seen yellowtail here. These fish are cold water fish we find in March to May! Crazy El Nino!

Paul dorado tags 8-15

They’re finally getting a bit bigger! La Paz Bay and north towards Espirto Santo Island has been our “go-to” spot for dorado this season, but the fish have been smaller than normal. Finally getting some in the 15-25 pound category. San Francisco amigo, Paul Nagata with another bull for the box.

Taylor Marino 8-15 tags

Before she heads back to college in Colorado, Taylor Marino and Captain Victor teamed up for some nice big roosters caught and released just off the beach near Muertos. All on bait.

rooster andrew harvey tags 8-15

The kids are alright! The youngsters had some great stories to tell when they get back to school this week. Andrew Harvey has to be back in school next week for 8th grade, but he had a great time fishing all week getting in some great fishing including catching and releasing this big roosterfish.  Andrew lives in Del Mar, CA.

Mike Jordan Steve Hartsook dorado tags 8-15

Long-time amigos of Tailhunter Michael Jordan from Santa Barbara and Steve Hartsook from Brentwood CA, hold a couple of their good fishing day for dorado as the rain approaches behind! It got a little wet for awhile!

dorado scott harvey tags 8-15

San Diego angler Scott Harvey brought the family down for the week and wanted to “hit the dorado hard.” He did pretty good with some of the larger dorado we’ve seen in awhile this season! Pretty colors here! Matches his shirt.

rooster Haley Marino 8-15 tags

She’s 15-years-old from Colorado and has a big smile to go along with the big rooster! Haley Marino got into the fish her dad and sister catching and releasing several big roosters.

dorado andrew harvey tags 8-15

It’s hard to pose when a big dorado won’t cooperate and keep still! Andrew Harvey wanted to catch his first dorado and did that and more this week fishing with both of our Tailhunter La Paz and Tailhunter Las Arenas fleets.

YELLOWTAIL IN AUGUST?  ROOSTERS AND DORADO STILL CENTER STAGE!

La Paz – Las Arenas/Muertos Bay Fishing Report for Week of Aug. 9-16, 2015

Summer dog days.  Hot and humid with fishing action pretty consistent. Some quick summer showers.   Just like in previous weeks, the rooster fish are the main attraction for the Las Arenas/ Bahia de los Muertos fishermen and dorado are keeping folks busy with our La Paz fleet.  It’s sunny and hot with humid clouds and tropical conditions.  Might be some thundershowers coming this week with a little storm out over the Pacific causing some momentary downpours, but not much wind showing.  Good thing.  Everyone going home with fish who wants fish!

Las Arenas/  Muertos Bay

It’s still living up to it’s nickname as the “Roosterfish Capital of the World.”   Our “smallest” roosters this week were 25-30 pound fish.  The largest were in the 40-50 pound class.  They’re not good to eat so everyone is releasing them, but sure are having fun with these big guys close to shore almost in the surf.  The ticket is getting the big sabalo (lady fish) or liso (mullet)for bait.

For other species, we had a surprise of yellowtail…yes yellowtail pop up!  Yellowtail are cold water fish. We see them in the later winter and early spring.  We haven’t had a yellowtail since May!  The commercial guys and a few pangas hit the 25-pounders off the lighthouse late in the week.  Crazy stuff.  The trick was having mackerel and the fish are off the ledge holding in deeper colder water. And the mackerel were not easy to come by.  But that’s been the trouble all season with the Las Arenas area.  If bait were easy and around,  we’d be catching all kinds of stuff in the area.  As it is, all the bait has been around the La Paz area.

A few dorado and cabrilla rounded things out.  Oh…and we also hooked our first wahoo in awhile too!

La Paz

If you’re not catching a limit or near limit or double limit of dorado these past few weeks, something’s wrong.  Many days our pangas are coming back early with tired anglers.  In all honesty, the fish are much smaller than they have been in previous years, but there’s still good action.  Even after limits guys are sometimes catching another 5-10 or more fish and releasing just for fun or going after other species like billfish or inshore pargo, cabrilla or rooster fish.

The dorado have been dinky…admittedly…but this is the first week we’re seeing more 10-20 pounders or larger which is encouraging.  So, the quality of the fish seems to be improving.  It seems most of the summer we were stuck in the “nursery” of 5 pound fish!

Anyway, there’s marlin and sailfish for those who want to give it a try  and the majority of bites are right around the areas where the small dorado are hanging out since the billfish will eat the small dorado.  There’s also some big schools of huge 20 pound jack crevalle that are tearing up the anglers plus big bonito.

GOOD GUY SHOUTS

NAGATA

Our good friend, Paul Nagata, from San Francisco brought down two full coolers of stuff for our “Pack for a Purpose” program. Filled with sporting goods, balls, air pumps, crayons, flash cards, bags of pencils and other school supplies for the kids. Thanks, Paul!

That’s our story!

NICE WEEK OF FISHING!

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay Fishing Report for Week of Aug. 2-9, 2015

I think this looks like the summer pattern for the season.  Maybe in a few weeks it will change, but for now, it appears that the fishing reports are getting pretty consistent.  Hot humid weather with occasional afternoon showers.  Great beach days and fishing fairly solid for three main species…rooster fish…dorado…and billfish.

LAS ARENAS

Still earning it’s nickname as the “Roosterfish Capital of the World.”  If you’re targeting rooster fish, it’s been an excellent season for them.  Some days are better than others, but overall, if pez gallos are on your bucket list and you have a day or two, you’ve got a good shot at taking in a trophy.  There’s some fun little dinky-guys in Bahia de Los Suenos running a 1-3 pounds that are a hoot on light tackle and flyrods.

Then…there are the beasty boyz!

The rest of the fish are tackle busters.  The “smaller ones” are 25-30 pounds.  The larger ones are up to 60 pounds.  And they get larger!  We have caught them over 100 pounds through the years and some big guys have been lost.  The world record 114-pounder was taken in this area.

The key is having either sabalo (ladyfish) or caballito (jacks) for bait.  On the days when it was a little too windy or bumpy to get the baits, those were the days when the rooster bite was off.  But, if you have the baits in the tanks, then you’d better buckle in.  The fish surprise alot of people to find fish this size literally just a few yards off the beach in shallow water.  The baits themselves can be as big as 12 inches.  So, anything that can put a 12-inch bait in it’s mouth is gonna be big!

Beyond that, some billfish getting hooked and a few school dorado and cabrilla.

LA PAZ

Fishing with our Tailhunter La Paz fleet, the dorado have been the highlight.  There’s several spots north of La Paz Bay that are holding lots of fish.  That’s the good news.  The bad news is that so many of the fish are 5 pounders.  Ready to eat anything you throw at them and there’s plenty of action.  There’s larger ones hanging out up to about 20 pounds, but the little “doraditos” are so plentiful, the larger ones don’t get the chance.  However, I will say that more of the bigger fish came up later in the week and it was a marked improvement!

Still, we’re hooking some larger ones each week and the smaller ones are providing lots of fun action so everyone gets bent.

For other species, with so many little dorado around, the billfish are feeding in the same areas on the small dorado so we’re hooking marlin and sails in the same areas as the dorado.  Big bonito also that pull like freight trains.

Inshore, the waters are getting almost too warm, but there’s still some pargo and cabrilla along the rocks as well as smaller rooster fish.

 GOOD HEART SHOUT OUTS!

High-five’s to this week’s big hearts who brought down stuff in their empty bags and ice chests for Jill’s “Pack for a Purpose” program to benefit needy kids here in La Paz!

WP_20150805_004-1

Just-in-time for the school year for kids that can’t get supplies, John Christofferson, who runs a huge barbecue catering biz in Las Vegas showed up with some great stuff for Jill’s Pack for a Purpose Charity.

WP_20150804_002-1

The Chacon Family (Rich, Hector, Lauren and friend Izzy) can give anyone a lesson in how to cram a ton of stuff into small places! Every year, they bring down clothes, supplies, school materials and so much more for the kids!

WP_20150805_005-1

He’s got a sly smile, but a big heart…Paul Zech with son, Mike, from Oregon come to see us every year and pose with Jill and a big load of things for the kids! Thanks, guys!

That’s our story!  Have a great week!

ROOSTERFISH…MARLIN…DORADO IN THE FULL MOON

La Paz – Las Arenas / Muertos Bay Fishing Report for Week of July 26-Aug. 1, 2015

Fishing was steady this week, if not spectacular.  Everyone got fish, even with the big blue moon full on.  There were some blustery days and a bit of swell generated by a big storm far to the south, but no rain or bad weather at all.  On the contrary, it was hot and humid.  Waters looked good.  Like I said, everyone got fish with the three main species being roosters, dorado and marlin.  The good thing is that for the most part, if you were hunting for a certain species and had a day or two to pursue them, you got what you were looking for.  So, the folks that wanted a marlin, got a marlin…or a rooster…or had fun with dorado!  That’s all good!

LAS ARENAS

Again, this is why they call it the rooster fish capital of the world.  The roosters generally, did not disappoint.  The “smaller roosters” this week were in the 30 pound class.  The larger ones were good-sized 50-60 pounders with larger roosters lost!  Most days, if you were looking for a rooster, you got one…or two…or three!  Great to check off the bucket list!  The only days when the roosters were tough were the days it was windy and it was hard to get bait.

And that’s the issue.  Bait is still tough to get out there.  The larger baits like caballitos, mackerel and lady fish are great and most days you can get a handful to try for a rooster or marlin.  But the smaller baits like the sardines are hard to come by.

So, beyond the roosters, we’re getting some OK-sized 10-15 pound dorado.  Many are the 5 pound class.  There’s also small roosters in Muertos Bay around 5 pounds that are a hoot on light tackle or flyrod.  There’s also some smaller pargo, cabrilla, triggerfish and such along the rocks that are great eating.

LA PAZ

If you want to put fillets in the ice chest, fishing with our La Paz Fleet is best.  Most days, it’s limits or near limits of dorado around the areas north of La Paz and around Espirito Santo Island.  The fish are slow to get bigger.  Lots of dinks unfortunately, in the 5-10 pound class, but some are getting bigger.  We finally got into a few in the 20 pound class, but few and far between.  This is more like May fishing than August fishing!  But, in terms of just action, it’s hard to resist a school of hungry dorado slamming around the panga.

Actually, the big bonito are larger than the dorado and surely a zillion times more powerful.  Lots of 10-15 pound bonito around that are just beating the heck out’ve our light tackle guys mixed in with some 25 pound jack crevalle.

I think because we have so many little dorado around, it’s also keeping the marlin around as well.  Like I said earlier, if you’re looking for a marlin, this past week was a good one to get it off the bucket list.  Everyone who wanted a marlin at least had a hook-up or two and all fish this week were released.  Most of the marlin were stripers going 100-150 pounds. We did have two blue marlin on for awhile that might’ve gone 200 pounds before they busted off.

There’s still some decent action on pargo and cabrilla in the coves around the islands and reefs although not sure how much longer that will last with the warming waters.   Guys have a kick this week on the light tackle trying to pull them outta the rocks.

I BLEW IT!

Last week, I incorrectly said this was my amigo, Larry Barnard , holding the big rooster.  FAIL!  It’s Matt Iacabelli from Florida who was on the boat with Larry!  Apologies to both amigos!  Nice fish, Matt! It’s still an awesome photo!   Larry is actually pictures above!

Larry Barnard rooster 7-15 tags

PACK FOR A PURPOSE

Shout out to Joe and Dave Hill who brought down a bunch of stuff for our kid’s charities. Thanks guys.  Also, to Dave Schneider who brought down an ice chest full of stuff as well, but I didn’t have my camera with me!  You guys are all great!

STORM BLANCA IS A BUZZKILL!

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Bahia de Los Muertos Fishing Report for Week of  May 31 to June 7, 2015

At the time you’re reading this, we’ll know what, if any effect,  Hurricane/Storm Blanca will have done to us.  I’m writing this about noon of Sunday trying to get this up and posted before we lose power.  We already lost power a few last night for short perdiods.  I’m hustling to write so excuse any typos!

As I write this, everyone is watching to see what will happen.  We have been tracking this for days.  It has been like watching a roller coaster ride because it has changed up and down by the hour.

Right now…The storm sits a couple of hundred  miles south of us where is seems to vary between a dangerous Category 1 and 2.  (It was up to to a 3 and 4).   The whopper that hit Baja last year was a Cat 4-5 with winds close to 200 miles and hour.    Named “Odile”, it’s fresh in our memories and  many of us are still recovering so we’re all anxious to see what nature has in store.  But, it’s coming.

As of this moment, they CLOSED CABO AIRPORT and the La Paz marinas have been closed for two days.  If you’re coming down in the next few days, I would suggest you call your airlines.  This will probably last through Tuesday.  Check!  As of right now, the La Paz Airport is open.

At the  moment, predictions have the storm diminishing it’s effect on us here in La Paz.  The eye of the storm has it going west and north instead of directly overhead.  It will make landfall much further north on the Baja Peninsula and probably bring California some much needed rain.  For us here in La Paz, we’re probably gonna get a few inches of rain today and tomorrow with some winds up to 60 MPH by tomorrow.  It’s not like Odile last year, but not to be taken lightly.

It’s NOT a hurricane, but it’s a very strong TROPICAL storm

For sure . strong winds in the 20-40 mph category are predicted to blow Sunday, Monday and Tuesday which is much  more problematic.  Even though the sun will likely be out, anything in double digits will make it impossible to be out on the water for our panga fleets here in La Paz.  Even if it’s safe, it’s not gonna be fun out there.  Plus, our bite has been so great for wahoo and roosters and our dorado bite just hit stride so I’m anxious to see how the bite will be affected post-Blanca.

To the government’s credit, the CFE crews are already out and marshalled in front of Hotel Marina.  These CFE guys and their big trucks saved us all last year when the big one hit us and many of us were out’ve power for several weeks.  The CFE guys are the power company guys and boat loads of the landed after last year’s hurricane and it was like the marines had landed or the cavalry showed up!  With no power, they’re no electricity.  No cooking.  No pumps to pump water.  Nothing!  The trucks are already here now and ready to go.   We talked to one of the CFE guys last night and he said they are actually parking themselves at various hot spots ready to immediately tackle problems.

Anyway, nothing to do but wait and see.  Last year, Odile took the same track and at the last minute turned inwards and kicked the hell outta lower Baja, after we all thought it was going to pass us up.

Fingers crossed!

As of 11 a.m Sunday morning, this is Hurricane Blanca

As of 11 a.m Sunday morning, this is Hurricane Blanca

ep201502_5day

As or Sunday, tracking Tropical Depression Blanca for the next few days.

ELECTION DAY

Another sidebar story…Sunday…today is election day.  NO ALCOHOL SALES IN LA PAZ are allowed.  So, with the storm and all, we figured we might as well close the Tailhunter Restaurant Bar and also let our employees spend the day with their families and taking care of their homes.

So, I ran out to the market Saturday night to stock up on batteries, tape, canned good, etc.  We are always prepared, but never hurts to have extras.  Last year before Odile, no one seemed to pay much mind and got caught flatfooted.  So, this year, everyone would be making a run of emergency supplies at the market.

I went to the market and there were PLENTY of supplies.  However, everyone was buying ALL THE BEER they could get a hold of!   People were more concerned with enough beer to get through election Sunday and in case stores are closed for several days afterwards!  I have heard that some stores have sold out of all their beer already!  Viva Mexico!   LOL

I have run into several friends who bought lots of beer on Saturday and stocked up their ice chests.  However, they ended up drinking it all up and now are in a panic now trying to find beer!

Anyway, here’s what’s been happening. It’s been a solid week!

LAS ARENAS/ MUERTOS BAY

Wow, that wahoo bite…not much to say except that in the last 3 weeks, we’ve gotten more wahoo than in the last 5 years combined.  I hate to sound cocky but this has been incredible.  Pangas are getting 1-5 wahoo per day.  The only clients of ours not getting a wahoo are those that are fishing for something else; flyfishers; or folks who are hooking them but losing the speedsters.  These fish are all quality 20-50 pounders!

We’re getting a little spoiled.  Some of our anglers have no idea just how we’re rolling in gravy.  They’re starting to complain!  LOL

“I only got ONE wahoo today.”

“I just had TWO wahoo today.  The other boats got more than me!”

Yikes!  Hahahaha…what can ya do?

Besides the wahoo, we’re still getting decent numbers of those tasty white bonito (meat like tuna!) and rooster fish have been in the 20-40 pound class.  Plus, we’re seeing pompano, jack crevalle, the occasional sierra (must be some cold water around), plus hooking a marlin or two as well as the marlin and sails are starting to wake up!

The bite diminished towards the end of the week on Thursday, Friday and Saturday as big rollers from the storm to the south started coming in and bait got harder to find.  We stopped fishing the area and see how things pick up after the storm.

LA PAZ

Our Tailhunter La Paz Fleet has been consistent for action.  Inshore stuff for pargo, cabrilla, snapper, amberjack, rooster fish,  jack crevalle and bonito has produced 20-30 fish days with lots of released fish, but lots of fun battling these fish in the rocks.

The best news is late in the week we finally started seeing some larger schools of dorado that we’ve been waiting for.  Fish are small to medium…5  to 15 pounders with many of the anglers releasing the smaller fish, but it’s encouraging to finally see the dorado moving in.

Also more billfish in the area as well which should only get better with so many more smaller dorado around.

We fished La Paz until late in the week when the Port Captain closed the port and prevented all watercraft from leaving!

That’s our story!

THE LAST TIME THE WAHOO BIT LIKE THIS WAS….NEVER!

La Paz -Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay Fishing Report for Week of May 17-24, 2015

What a difference a week makes!  After several weeks of scratchy fishing, we had one of those weeks for the books.  In twenty years here in La Paz, I have never seen a bite like this.

Wahoo like crazy.  Wahoo became WOW-hooo!  I’ll let my clients say it better:

“Every bait we threw in the water got wahoo!”

“They were free swimming all round the pangas!”

“I was hooked up and my buddy was hooked up…and there were two or three swimming around us looking for something to bite!”

“We hooked two and lost four.  We wanted to try for a marlin so we went marlin fishing for 3 hours.  We came back and hooked two more wahoo!”

“It was like watching giant mackerel swimming around in the blue water!”

“We could have caught 10 or 15 easy if we were better fishermen.  What a blast!”

“I learned quickly NOT to put my thumb on the reel when a wahoo runs.  It’s not like a salmon! I fried my thumb off!”

LAS ARENAS / MUERTOS BAY

Whatever happened was epic.  Two areas.  One at the south end of Cerralvo Island on the high spot and then the other right outside Bahia de Los Muertos just off the rocks a hundred yards!  Small mackerel…baby sardines…trolled Rapalas…they got bit.  A few days were better than others, but there were wahoo everyday this week.  I hope I don’t jinx it.

These fish were running 20-50 pounds and the crazier part was that some of the rookie guys didn’t realize the prize they had caught…and GAVE AWAY ALMOST ALL THEIR FISH TO CAPTAINS OR ANYONE ELSE WHO WANTED A PIECE!!!   It was nuts.

In addition to the wahoo…well…we got the rooster fish back in the fold.  Not as good as its as two or three weeks ago, but at least we got some to the boat.  The fish ran 15-45 pounds on the average and all got released.  But, for alot of guys (and gals), it was one to check off the bucket list.

Anyway…whew…a much better week.  Not everyone caught fish every day like this, but this was the place to go for the larger fish this week.

LA PAZ

For all the bigger fish, Las Arenas was where the action was happening.  For the most action, our La Paz fleets did better.  Usually, it’s reversed.  Las Arenas has the variety and action while La Paz holds the larger fish.

But, what we had this week was some really really great inshore action along the reefs and islands.   Some sizable pargo (yellow snapper and barred pargo)  and some good-sized cabrilla plus some late-season sierra provided some solid action most days.  There were also some rooster fish caught and released and we had a few marlin hookups as well with fish getting released or breaking off.  There’s some dorado out there, but not in the numbers we’d expect this time of year.  More expected as the waters warm up.

That’s our story!  Happy Memorial Day everyone and thanks to all who served!

Diana Statman from Marina del Rey CA had never fished in salt water and was a little nervous going out on “that little panga.” But, with Captain Pancho from the Tailhunter fleet, she had a bait in the water only a few minutes and got slammed! Her husband Jay was still rigging up. He got bit shortly after and they had a double hookup going. Here she is trying to hold the big fish still for the camera.

rooster burgess tags small 5-15

Nice rooster for Allen Burgess from Kansas wit Captain Jorge from the Tailhunter Fleet. Caught and released off Bahia de Los Muertos. He also hooked and released a 250 pound blue marlin after a 3 hour battle on 40 pound test and a spinning rod.

pargo cabrilla drucker 5-15 tags

Pretty typical of the nice bite around Espirito Santo Island right now for some great pargo and cabrilla and some of the best fish on the grill or plate. Captain Joel with our good amigo, John Drucker.

Nyle Miyamoto tags dorado 5-15

From Washington, Nyle Miyamoto, with one of our early season dorado no the beach at Muertos. Waters are warming and we expect to see more dorado anytime now.

tags yellowtail travis craig and brett fair 5-15

Might be the last yellowtail of the season and caught by Brett Fair and Travis Craig from Portland OR off Espirito Santo Island on big mackerel.

Mike Dietzman sailfish tags 5-15

Normally, he’s out white-water paddling, but Mike Dietzman from Oregon was just with us on his first time salt water fishing and he hooked into this nice sailfish north of La Paz.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Hard to beat for just getting pulled around on a fishing rod, there’s some big schools of jack crevalle running around right now. Great on light tackle! From Oregon, Joel Ulam and Brad Carlson with a pair or “toros.”

Dorad dave cummins 5-15 tags

With Captain Chito trying to hook up another bait, Dave Cummins has a fresh one on the gaff. Nice bull dorado off Espirito Santo Island . Check out the great colors!

tuna Jay 5-15 tags small

Captain Chito with Jay Statman from Marina Del Rey CA and two great yellowfin tuna out’ve Bahia de los Muertos. Jay and his wife were double hooked and had fish going when a boat load of spearfishing free divers jumped right in the water 10 yards off our panga despite being asked not to do it. That shut off the bite. C’mon…show some courtesy. It’s a huge ocean! Still a nice catch!

Travis craig pargo 5-15 tags

Mmmmm…one of the best eating fish here! Travis Craig with a huachinango (red snapper pargo) he pulled out of the rocks near Espirito Santo Island.

Donna hammerhead tags 5-15

An unusual catch, but they are around here! Donna Drucker hooked this 80 pound hammerhead and fought it to the boat so it could be released.

ANGLERS WORK HARD FOR FISH…AGAIN…

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay Fishing Report for Week of May 10-17, 2015

It was another tough week after waters and conditions settle down from the strange crazy winds and waves we got the week before that just turned everything over and around.  It brought in cooler, greener water plus residual winds and it’s taking quite a few days for things to settle down So, alot of this week was just scratchy fishing and hat’s off to all our anglers who kept grinning and kept patient and brought the smiles.  I won’t lie, the fishing was way off what it should be this time of year.

There were some great highlights to be sure.  But, alot of the week, it was either tough to find bait because of the waters or winds or, when we did find it, the guys had to work hard for their fish.  However, with each day of better weather, the conditions were coming back.  Each day the waters calmed and so did the winds and little-by-little the fishing seemed to inch better.

Las Arenas

Probably the toughest fishing the last two weeks.  There’s bunches of little dorado around that are entertaining for awhile, but I mean “really little” five pounders, if that.  Good for a fish or two to be released, then most anglers move on unless they’re playing and having fun with the light tackle. There’s also some good schools of white bonito around.  Again, lots of fun and they’re getting 5-10 per day.  These aren’t the “bad bonito” or skipjack.  These are the whites that make great eating and can fool anyone on a plate that it’s actually tuna!  The meat is not dark, but rather great pink meat perfect for sashime and cooks up white as well.

The highlights of the week for our guys…rooster fish.  Hard to come by this week with limited smaller baits so we only had the big ladyfish to use, but that produced a few of the bigger 30-50 pounders along the shores.  But, the bite was definitely off.

As well, we had some wahoo bites, but no fish landed.  All from the south end of Cerralvo Island and near Punta Perrico.  But, the wahoo are there.  (Just as I posted this Sunday night, two of our guys landed 2 forty-pound fish and lost a bigger one!)

We also had more marlin swimming around and one big-time hookup by Al Burgess from Kansas.  Allen hooked a fish estimated by our captain at 250 pounds!  But, even more amazing, Al was using 40 pound test AND A SPINNING ROD!   He battled the fish solo for 3 solid hours with a bad back and legs and they said the big fish bulldogged them and barely ever jumped…the worst and strongest kind…smart fish that don’t waste energy jumping around!  It pulled the panga with 3 anglers and a captain in circles the entire time.

Sorry there’s no photos but what happened is the guys burned up all the batteries and memory during the battle!  When the fish was finally alongside the boat, no one had any memory or batteries!  Only great stories.  And the fish was released!!!  Well done!

The other highlight was a nice jag of 30-40 pound tuna.  Another good story.

Diana Statman had never fished in salt water before!  First time down here too, although husband, Jay, is a long time fisherman and has been down to La Paz many times before.  Diana gets a bait and gets it in the water and minutes later she’s bit!!!  Tuna on!!!  Husband Jay is still rigging up!    Then, Jay gets bit!  Doubles on!

But what happens…some private spear fishermen pull up not 10 yards from their panga and jump in the water!  Despite being asked to move somewhere else…they jump in anyway.   The tuna get pulled in, but bite over! C’mon guys…some courtesy.  It’s a big ocean!!!

LA PAZ

This is surprisingly where most of our action took place this week.  And it wasn’t our usual bite.

Of all things, with the crazy weather, our captains have found some good spots for some big pargo and cabrilla near the islands and some of the reefs.  It’s providing some pretty solid action and they’re losing some big big fish to the rocks and inexperience.  Most of the fish that are coming back are delicious 3-5 pounders, but some great stories of 10-20 pound fish lost to the rocks.   Plus some big amberjack up to 50 pounds caught at the north end of Cerralvo and larger ones being lost…some right next to the boat up to 70 pounds.

We did get a few yellowtail.  Normally, we should be getting more this time of year, but waters are warming fast so I think the yellowtail we are getting might be the last of the season.

A few dorado around but of the larger variety and we should see more every week and we also hooked a few marlin and sails this week as well.

Again, not spectacular and not our usual.  But every day seems a little better as long as the weather holds!

That’s our story!

Hosmer tuna 5-15

Big tuna for our buddy, Rick Hosmer who tag-teamed with John Nagy and Captain Mundo at the south end of Cerralvo Island. They fought this fish for almost 2 hours on 50 pound test. Flurries of fast movers have been seen at north and south ends of Cerralvo lately!

Terry Price rooster 5-15 hi res tags

From New Mexico, on his last day of fishing, Terry Price finally landed his roosterfish on the flyrod . They were just outside of Muertos Bay. The fish was released.

The ladies really did well this week. From the Oregon area, Dorothy Murata with Captain Jorge busts a big smile with her roosterfish she took on a live sardine with our Las Arenas fleet. The fish was released.

david wahoo tags small 5-15

A good day with 2 wahoo and a marlin to show, David from La Paz holds up one of his wahoo. Thanks to Hawk for the great photo. The north and south ends of Cerralvo have been hot spots for the speedsters.

amberjack debbie 4-15 tags small

She is always in fish! Another of our Oregon amigas who knows how to fish…Debbie White and Captain Pancho pose with a strange-colored amberjack! Most are “amber” or bronze, but this guy didn’t get the memo and is almost albino. Related to yellowtail, they are great eating and great fighters and get over 100 pounds.

Chito and Dorothy dorado small tags 4-15

Seeing more dorado as the days and waters get warmer. Captain Chito and Dorothy Murata from Oregon pose with a nice bull dorado on the east side of Espirito Santo Island.

Dulce and David marlin 5-15 tags

David and Dulce with a small blue marlin that went to the barbecue for the family. They live in La Paz. Thanks for the shot, Hawk!

INSHORE FISHING HIGHLIGHTS THE WEEK

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay Fishing Report for Week of April 26-May 3, 2015

It was a good week on all counts this week.  Weather-wise and fishing conditions were more consistent and just-like-that fishing seemed to be more consistent as well.  With winds not quite as erratic and seemingly more spots of warm water around, fishing leveled out too.  More days of action all-the-way-around which no one seemed to mind.

Las Arenas

Lately, this has surely been the place for some variety.  Nothing wrong with that.  If you want a shot at rooster fish, you have your best shot at the early season roosters.  Most of the fish are that 20-pound class, but some larger up to 40 pounds have been hooked.  The areas are in the usual spots…just around the beaches at the lighthouse and also just off the Punta Perico rocks.  Heading south from Bahia de Los Muertos towards Boca de Alamo, there are some larger roosters as well, especially along the shallow rocky areas incredibly close to shore.

In the same areas, there’s some big schools of feisty jack crevalle and big pompano as well. Related to the roosters, they share that same tenacious bad attitude.  Just like their cousins, the jacks  are also not good for eating so everyone releases them, but for sheer fun, it’s hard to beat them. On the other hand, if you stick a pompano, they’re a real treat on the grill or as sashimi!

Offshore (for us, “offshore” means 100 yards out!), there’s schools of bonito.  We have several species of bonito and if you get the “toothed bonito” not only are they good fighters, but your captain will tell you to keep them as they are some great eating and not like the skipjack and Mexican bonito that have dark strong-tasting meat and get released.  But, you can hook a dozen-a-day of these things.

Additionally, we’re seeing more dorado here and there with larger sizes becoming more pre-dominant. More marlin showing which is encouraging.  As waters get warmer, I’m sure they’ll turn on. Plus, there’s some wahoo close in near Punta Perico and just this side of the south side of Cerralvo Island.  Rapala X-Wraps in 15’s and 30’s in dark colors are producing the best bites.

La Paz

Surprisingly, the inshore action has been quite better than I would have expected.  Honestly, the yellowtail bite seems to have gone under so-to-speak.  I shut down earlier this year than I would have thought.  Blame it on the warm water.

However, the rest of the action inshore has rocked for amberjack, pargo, cabrilla, jack crevalle and some assorted rooster fish.  There’s some inshore spots where some of our clients caught and released as fast as they could go.  Plus losing lots of fish to the rocks as well and had a blast.

In the blue water, more dorado showing up and we’ve missed a few shots at sunning marlin and sailfish too and had a few wahoo hookups also that were dropped.

That’s our story!
