SNOWBIRDS IN TOWN – THE GAP BETWEEN HOLIDAYS

La Paz- Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay Fishing Report for Week of Nov. 20-27, 2016

Hope you and yours had a great Thanksgiving week!

Not much going on this past week. Very few folks in town and most of the visitors are from colder climates and these snowbirds are just trying to find some sunshine. They’re not necessarily in town to fish, or snorkel or participate in other water sports…except for the windsurfers who are starting to head towards La Ventana/ El Sargento near Las Arenas. As our winds get strong and stronger, that area in the channel by Cerralvo Island is world-class for wind sports.

As far as our fishing, well, it is indeed getting windier and not the most ideal for fishing. So, you it is what it is if you plan to fish in the off-season. It’s definitely usually sunny, but winds can make it bumpy and/ or limit the areas we can fish and the types of species we can fish for.

Indeed, that’s what happened this week. No big pelagic to report for the first time all season. No dorado. No tuna. No rooster fish. No billfish. So, maybe the warm-water season has finally ended.

Or, maybe it’s just an aberration. When there’s not many boats on the water, a few boats can’t be everywhere at once checking out all spots. So, there could well be spots of big game fish still out there. Or not. As the season goes along and rolls into December, things will get clearer. It’s definitely a transition time right now.

So, what we got were some cargo, cabrilla, sierra and bonito. Pretty much inshore species. For now. We should get a few more folks on the water now that Thanksgiving weekend is over.

Don’t close the curtains just yet…

From Twin Falls, Idaho, Terry Robinson had a great day nailing this huge wahoo…losing a few others…tangling with a big dorado for a bit and also getting the wahoo below.

And here’s the nice tuna. Chunky fish for November!

Just as I was putting out this report to make my deadline, we had some of our anglers hit wahoo and tuna! And lost others! So, hold everything. Maybe it’s not over yet!

Brandon and Tanya McGarr (next photo) were down to see us for their first trip and also celebrating their birthdays. They’re from Rock Springs, Wyoming. At the same time, they got this double-hook-up of big roosterfish and had to fight each fish simultaneously. Nice late-season roosters and both were released. They also got a wahoo to take home.

As mentioned above, Tanya McGarr tied up to this big rooster at the same time her husband, Brandon, also bit bit. It’s hard to hold up a fish for a photo when your arms are tired! She released the fish!

Wahoo, like the ones caught by Paul “LP” Hieb with Captain Pancho, are still around, but not sure for how much longer as conditions are changing.

FISHING MIXED AS WINDS INCREASE

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay Fishing Report for Week of Nov. 13-20, 2016

Things are really sliding into different conditions with each passing week. More wind. Still wonderfully, sunny but cooler. More snowbirds showing up, not so much interested in fishing as just finding warmer conditions than where they were coming from. Fewer families right now as we approach the holidays and families have other things on their plates.

As far as fishing, there’s far fewer anglers than we had even a week or two ago. This is that “gap” between the holidays and the start of our off-season when we don’t see so many anglers again until late March or April.

There’s still fish out there, but it’s hard to get a great read on things when there are so few boats on the water. That one boat fishing just one day, might find the fish and have a banner time. Or, they could miss the fish but if they had been 500 yards away in a different spot, they might have hit a honey-hole. One or two pangas can’t cover the whole ocean.

So, one thing is for sure. There’s not a lot of boat traffic out there! Further, it’s a crapshoot for fishing. We do the best we can and we go have fun.

The other thing that’s guaranteed is that the winds are going to get stronger from the north. We have already shut down our Tailhunter La Paz fleet for the season. It’s just too unpredictable to be outside the bay when it can be blowing outside even when the bay looks calm. But even in the bay, sometimes, there’s whitecaps these days.

So, all of our fishing has been pretty much with our Tailhunter Las Arenas Fleet from Muertos Bay where at least the waters are a little more protected and the fish are closer.

But, even that being said, we had four days this past week where I recommended that the clients not go fishing and fish a different day because the winds were too strong. That made all the difference. But, those were cases where the clients were with us for a few days and had flexible schedules.

It’s different if some fishermen only have 1 day to fish or are walk-in clients to our store and want to go fishing…”tomorrow.” I can only advise them that it might be pretty windy if that’s what the forecast says or completely tell them it’s not even safe to go out because the winds will be gusting.

All that being said, out folks that went out this week got some nice variety out’ve Bahia de los Muertos.

There’s still some wahoo biting not too far outside of Metros and around Punta Perrico. The fish are nice-grade 30-pound class fish most times. Some a little bigger. Some a little smaller, but still…a wahoo! We’re still losing more than we’re putting in the boat. These wahoo have gotten cagey. They’re tough and fast and they’ve got those sharp teeth and are even biting off the Rapalas!

We also found a few tuna out there in front of the old Hotel Las Arenas too. Just about 100 yards or so off the beach, there’s some breezing yellowfin of 20-30 pounds that are wiling to eat the squid.

Near that same area, we also surprisingly got into some late season hefty 30-50 pound rooster fish as well. I can’t remember getting roosters this late in the season, but that could also be because I can’t remember anyone fishing for them this late, but still…GREAT CATCH and another exotic tough trophy fish!

Rounding out, there’s some pargo, cabrilla, jack crevalle, bonito, snapper and sierra working as well.

James “Hawk” Davis, our amigo from La Ventana put the wood on this surprise yellowtin tuna estimated at about 80 pounds!

Captain Favio was out with Sam from North Carolina and they stuck this beefy yellowtail from the island.

YELLOWTAIL YES…BUT TUNA IN FEBRUARY?

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Feb. 1-8, 2015

After two weeks of on-again-off-again funky weather that included both wind AND rain, we finally had a week where the clouds parted a bit and we got sunshine and calmer seas.

Accordingly, I’m not surprised that we got into a few more fish and had some better conditions. There was still some wind, but it was still better than it had been!

We had quite a variety and I guess the biggest news was the surprise jag of tuna found at the north end of Cerralvo Island. Commercial fishermen had been trickling reports to us of fast moving tuna now and then, often moving too fast to get on them, but we finally stuck one. James “Hawk” Davis our amigo, stuck a fish we estimate at perhaps 60 pounds dragging a Rapala. Now, normally, we don’t see tuna until maybe late spring or early summer and it’s too soon to call this a “tuna bite.” But, it’s darned exciting to see a good-grade ahi hit the deck! We’ll keep you posted.

Hawk got his fish on 40 pound test and his xRap30 was the mackerel pattern. According to Hawk, there’s yellowtail around in the shallow spots, but that’s the problem. Dragging deep running lures like the XRap30 means losing alot of expensive Rapalas in the rocks!

As for other species, there’s some slugger yellowtail also around the island with most fish running 20-30 pounds. A nice grade of hefty fish that can pull like crazy. This is the right time for more of them to show up.

In addition, talk about a buffet of species…we also have been getting into pargo…both the big mullet snapper (pargo liso) as well as the barred pargo mulatto that have the pretty orange and green bars on them. Fish have been 5-20 pounds which might not sound like much until you try putting the wood to one of these guys and try to pull him outta the rocks.

We also found schools of dorado…some smaller school-sized rooster fish…bonito and cabrilla for a nice mix of fish.

Conditions look like they’re going to hold so hopefully, we’ll get some better fishing reports coming up!

TAILHUNTER WHALE WATCHING TRIPS IN FULL SWING!

Our daily trips out to Bahia Magdalena for whale watching have been having some incredible times! Lots of whales in the water and it’s an amazing experience to get close to these incredible animals. They usually hang out in the area until about mid-March or so. Plenty of time to see them before they start their long journey north back to the Bering Sea by Alaska! CARNAVAL COMING TO TOWN!

It’s gonna be a full week of craziness and fun at Carnaval!

Several huge parades will be taking place on the waterfront and all the town will turn out to watch!

The best seats in the house to watch a parade are at Tailhunters!

Just a heads-up that the 2015 La Paz Carnavale kicks it off this week with the giant street fair…incredible concerts…huge parades…fireworks and food! The revelry starts on Feb. 12 and goes to the 17th! Alot of the action takes place right in front of our Tailhunter Restaurant on the malecon which is also the best seat on the waterfront to watch the parades!

Don and Debbie White have been fishing with us for years! They’re coming again this April! But, they brought me some awesome fuzzy slippers to wear in the booth because they know I stand for 10-12 hours straight and my feet are killing me!

An incredible shout-out THANK YOU / MUCHAS GRACIAS to our own Rod Brown from Wrangell, Alaska. Not only did he come all the way down to Portland but he put together the most amazing photos book called, “Fishing with Jonathan and Jill” filled with pages and pages of some of the fantastic fish he and his family and friends have caught with us over the years! I’m going to keep this somewhere very special. We were honored to get such a thoughtful gift! Thanks, Rod!

We just finished one of our best shows of the year at the Portland Expo Center for the Northwest Sportsmans Show! It as off-the-charts! Solid wall-to-wall people for 5 days and we saw soooo many of our amigos who came to visit us at the booth! We had a blast and thank you for all of you who were so thoughtful to bring goodies and gifts. You’re the best. And a special shout-out to everyone who booked their 2015 La Paz fishing vacations as well!

We now head on down the road to our next stops Only this time, we do something different. Because of scheduling, Jill and I will split up!

Jill will head up to Yakima Washington and do the show there!

I’ll be in the football stadium at Phoenix doing the ISE show there!

Jesse had one day to squeeze in for fishing and made the most of it with a nice rack of dorado to put in the freezer. If he’s not smiling, it’s cuz he told me had had a wahoo estimated at 60 pounds all the way to the boat before it broke loose!

Yes! There’s crazy roosterfish still around. They started showing up about a month ago and have been running up to about 50 pounds! Brian Mee from Eastern Washington was fishing light tackle and shows off a great sampel of the kind of roosters we’re getting. This big boy was released!

Carlos Cifuentes had never been fishing before he tried a day on the water with our Tailhunter Capt. Armando fishing from Bahia de los Muertos! They got 4 nice dorado and lost several others prompting Carlos to laughing tell us, “My shoulders are so sore! I never caught fish before like this!”

Some of the wahoo we’re getting are just minutes from leaving the beach just around the corner from Bahia de Los Muertos. Captain Jorge put the guys into this fat ‘hoo!

Our gran amigo, Art Savedra, the famous “Captain Hook” was here working the Baja 1000 race but stayed a few extra days to get in some fishing and scuba. He’s here on the beach with Captain Armando and dinner!

DORADO STILL AROUND BUT OTHER SPECIES HELP OUT AS COOLER CONDITIONS COME IN!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Nov. 16-23, 2014

A bit windier this week with a few days that were really bouncy, but still overall really pleasant conditions. But, as we get closer to winter we’re going to see more winds and especially winds from the north. But, for that very reason is why we’re doing most of our fishing from Las Arenas right now since we can launch from the beach at Bahia de Los Muertos where we’re a bit more protected from the winds and it’s also easier since the fishing is much closer…like RIGHT THERE!

I’m not kidding. We’re getting a variety of fish within minutes of where we launch. The bay itself is holding some decent rooster fish up to about 40 pounds. By the northern point of rocks, there’s jack crevalle and cabrilla. As soon as you pass the point, drop the lures and there’s always the possibility of wahoo literally within a hundred yards of the rocks! Go south or just outside to the buoys and you can hit dorado.

Anywhere in between, there’s also the chance of more wahoo, billfish (sails mostly), pargo, and bonito. Great variety and in between these gusty days, conditions are about as pleasant as you could want with air temps in the low 80’s and water temps just about the same. Just be flexible on your fishing days, if you can, in case the day you want to go out looks like the wind is going to kick in.

Keep an eye out as well. There’s so much sea life out there. Schools of dolphin…sea turtles…whalesharks…blue whales…manta rays. Pretty incredible time to be in La Paz!

We just wanted to take the time to wish you and your family a very peaceful and happy Thanksgiving. We’ve had a crazy tumultuous year here in La Paz. Mother Nature did what Mother Nature does and not much to be done about it except roll with it and try to keep smiling. Crazy El Nino year affected the fishing. Storms and hurricanes. Winds and heat…we pretty much had it all. But, through it all, so many of you kept us smiling and laughing and remembering how very blessed we are to even be here. Thanks for your support. FINALLY! Look what popped up! After seeing “signs” of tuna ever since the hurricane, we finally got a few and hopefully, these are the vanguard for a building bite! Standing on the beach at Muertos, Louie Sanchez from Denver and Don Goss from Los Angeles, jumped numerous hurdles to get to La Paz even after the hurricane! First tuna of the season!

Dorado like the one here with Mike Jennings have been rolling through in solid numbers, especially west of Cerralvo Island where easy limits have not been unusual!

The billfish have been restless since the storm and we had several days this past week where almost every one of our pangas hooked at least one sailfish. Most were released.

Geri Cammack with the kind of dorado that have been producing north of La Paz this past week. Except for this past weekend, weather has been some of the best of the season!

GETTING BACK ON TRACK!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Sept. 28-Oct. 5, 2014

For the last three weeks since Hurricane Odile, we’ve honestly had some of the best weather and condtions of the year! Blue skies…calm warm waters…very little wind. Just enough breeze to keep it comfortable.

But, as I’m writing this, we’re looking at Tropical Storm Simon that promises to drop a little rain on us for the next 4 days (Saturday to Monday) Doesn’t look like too much. Just enough to get us wet and hit us with some afternoon thunder and lightning. However, given how much we’ve already gotten hit in this El Nino year, I was kinda hoping that “enough-was-enough.”

Here in La Paz, and surely in many other places in southern Baja, especially the closer you get to Cabo, there’s alot of folks who lost their homes or they were heavily damaged. So, even a “little rain” only adds more misery to a situation that was under recovery.

By any stretch of the imagination, the recovery has been remarkable. The government and local authorities both public and private pulled out all the stops to get folks back on the grid as soon as possible. Much of the work has been done in record time although there are some folks only now getting back with power and water. But this is far ahead of predictions.

Most notably, the Cabo Airport which had been forecast as taking months to re-open, is now open as of Oct. 3rd with flights slowly starting to trickle in. Hotels and other tourist attractions are also making great strides.

As for the fishing, the great weather and conditions predicated some very good fishing these last few weeks. You could not have asked for better air and water! The only problem was that there weren’t many fishermen in town as there had been scores of cancelations, especially since there were no flights.

However, for those who were able to get on the water, dorado were most cooperative. These fish had not seen any traffic or pressure now for 3 weeks! They are hungry! Several days limits were easy and the anglers were catching and releasing fish as fast as they could go! On two days, our guys came back happily by noon with full fish boxes and “more than enough action for the day!”

Most of the fish were 10-15 pounds, but others in the 20-25 pound class were also found. Additionally, marlin and sailfish hooks-ups were also recorded. There’s an abundance of bonito out there so no shortage of action on light tackle. And, we also hooked a few wahoo around Cerralvo Island.

Maybe the most exciting ripple of news…Commercial guys got a few tuna that hit and moved off! Then, right at the end of the week, we hit a few football tuna ourselves. The biggest problem was getting through the voracious schools of bonito, but there are tuna signs everywhere. Several private boats as well as commercial guys report tuna in the 100 pound class coming through the areas and some of our diver friends reported diving and having schools of tuna flash through! This could be good! Standing by!

Two weeks ago, we were ankle deep and surveying the damage the morning after Odile struck La Paz. Fallen trees…broekn windows…shattered glass everywhere. It had been a long and sleepless night. The start of many to follow. The hotel has made a remarkable recovery!

LA PAZ…AIRLINES…FISHING BACK ON TRACK!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Sept. 21-28, 2014

Two weeks ago, we were standing in the water surveying the rubble and destruction for the biggest hurricane ever to hit Baja. Two weeks later…WE’RE ON THE COMEBACK! We’re digging out with remarkable speed!

Frankly, there hasn’t been alot of fishing going on since the hurricane. All the tourists have pretty much been evacuated or, there’s no way to fly in, or hotels have been damaged or without services so trips have been canceled. Local residents or expats aren’t fishing either as everyone struggles to get back on keel with larger things to worry about like food, water, gas and their homes and jobs.

However, we’ve had a few boats out here and there. Weather has still been erratic. Nothing bad, but there have been some lingering intermittent rain cells that have moved through the area that has also kept us off the water or winds strong enough where it was better just not to put out any boats.

As might be expected, the further we get away from the hurricane, the better the water conditions. Given that we just had the biggest hurricane in Baja history, it’s not surprising that the waters were very overturned dirty and green. Lots of debris in the water too.

The first few days, there were a few small dorado around. Some sierra and bonito as well.

Within a few days, we were seeing more dorado, but they seemed interested, but wary. Very hesitant to take a bait or lure.

By the end of this week, the fish were back on the chew. We had limits or near limits of dorado including some nice bulls in the 20-30 pound class as well as bonito, cabrilla, jack crevalle and a few small rooster fish.

For everyone who sent well wishes and support phone calls and e-mails, we much appreciated it. We’re digging out and like everyone else, trying to manage and pull back together. The storm has been pretty devastating. On many levels.

The La Paz Airport is back in operation. Tourists are gone, but the hotels are jammed full with more than 20,000 escapees from Cabo San Lucas.

and arrive in Los Angeles at 3:45 p.m.

Customers who are currently holding a reservation on flight 236 or 251 for Oct.8 or later do not need to rebook their flight.

All our pangas and captains are well. We pulled the pangas out’ve the water before the storm hit. The La Paz captains did better than our Las Arenas captains. At Las Arenas, many in the area are will without water, power, electricity or phones. Compound that with the tremendous loss of work with all the cancelations. The loss of work is a big hit for everyone.

Generally, here in La Paz, most areas have water and power and phones again. But many of the outlying areas are still lacking services two weeks after the storm. Of course, many of those who had the least, lost the most and have the hardest time making the comeback. In Cabo, they have approximately only 15% back on the grid, but the improvement is remarkable given initial estimates. As mentioned above, the airport will start getting flights this week. Many hotels are opening albeit on a limited basis. But again, the most underprivileged areas were hit the hardest and will take the longest to recover.

Many have asked for ways to help. Thanks for the generous hearts. If you’re coming down, ANYTHING is welcome. Many people lost everything. All ages. All areas. Clothes…school supplies…medical supplies…anything is appreciated and needed. If you’re not coming down, there are still ways to help:

Another pretty solid week of dorado fishing with some really nice bulls taken including this sweet one that jumped a bait and bent Steve Dorsey’s rod fishing north of La Paz.

Captain Adolfo poses with our Colorado amigo, Frank Kunze who fished with us all week and had a good shot of dorado including this nice bull he got on the flyrod after just missing a rooster on the fly. He’s on the beach here at Bahia de los Muertos.

Ed Sakuda was on his first visit to fish Las Arenas and we think he’s “sold” on coming back with 3 days of dorado fishing. His sister Caryn and her husband Mark Aizawa from Pasadena CA get in the photo too!

Daniel Llerena from Buena Park had never fished salt water before and his dad hadn’t fished in salt water in more than a decade! The two of them came down and got in two quick days of fishing with some great results! Dan was fishing with Captain Joel when he put the hurt on this mahi.

Lee Carlson from the Denver Colorado area, spent 6 days on the water with us fishing with both our Tailhunter fleets and shows off one of his better bull dorado he got near Cerralvo Island.

Dan Hayler and his family all got together on one of our mega pangas for a day of fishing on the bay and had a nice day of action. The family is from Upland CA.

Gino and his son Daniel Llerena got in two quick days of fishing and made the most of it with some nice dorado as well as this striped marlin on light tackle. Cerralvo Island in the background.

Kelly Soo Hoo has fished with us before and did really well. This time she brought her son, Nick, for his first experience. Nice had a great time and got a variety of fish including these very tough jack crevalle!

From Bankor, Pennsylvania, Rich Normyl had a full hand of mahi. Check out the storm clouds coming up behind him at Bahia de los Muertos!

The whale sharks have returned to La Paz bay. Dan Hayler took this great photo of a “baby” whaleshark of only about 20 feet in the shallow bay water. They can grow to over 50 feet long and are true sharks, but are gentle and have no teeth and eat plankton.

This is what 15 minutes of rain produces on the La Paz waterfront right in front of our Tailhunter Restaurant Bar.

CRAZY WEATHER PACES FISH BITE

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Aug 10-17, 2014

Even with the week of “super moon” we still had a pretty decent week of fishing going on. Even with the tropical thundershowers late in the week that were almost like baby hurricanes, the fish still bit. But it was a bit of a challenge. But, like I said, the fish still bit.

The super moon was beautiful over Baja waters, especially here in La Paz over the bay making it much like a postcard with the huge bright moon shimmering over the bay and the palm trees.

The big problem was more of these afternoon thunderstorms that crashed into us late in the day. Fortunately, mostly after the fishing was done. But something to watch. Blue skies would darken quickly. Incredible lightning storms would follow then almost simultaneously thunderclaps that would sound like they were right overhead. During one 2 hour period during one storm, over 70 light night strikes were counted. During another storm, a bolt hit a palm tree on the malecon waterfront area igniting it which then caused it to fall on the palapa roof of a popular bar. The bar caught on fire then burned to the ground with huge flames 30 feet in the air.

Within minutes of the thunder and lightning the rains would cascade. Huge rolling waves of sheer water flooded streets and turned many into rivers and lower areas and arroyos into raging category 2 or 3 cauldrons that would’ve been the envy of whitewater kayakers…except they were all brown mud!

Cars suddenly found themselves up to the doors in water and many stalled. Neighborhoods found themselves turned into islands with people trapped in long rainy lines unable to leave the area and others in the opposite directions unable to return home. Off the La Paz cliffs, mini-Yosemite-like waterfalls tumbled 20, 30 40 feet to the roads along with rocks and boulders. In a one hour period during one storm, more than 3 inches of water descended on La Paz.

But, like I said as far as fishing, at least most of this was all taking place later in the day or evenings when the fishing was done.

LAS ARENAS

There was only one day during the week when we decided it wasn’t worth it to fish Las Arenas because of the stormy conditions. The rest of the time, for the most part, Las Arenas was pretty much as good as it has been all year. Relatively speaking.

We actually even had small sardines to use for bait and we had flyfishers hooking rooster fish, dorado, jack crevalle and bonito.

The dorado were 5-15 pounders with a few 20-30 pounders as well. If a boat found the right spot, limits were pretty easy. Roosterfish, while not as plentiful as earlier in the season were still around with most in the 10-30 pound class. Bonito, jack crevalle and even some barred pargo gave us some variety.

LA PAZ

Our La Paz fishery has been the most consistent all year. Some days are better than others, like anywhere else, but 9 out’ve 10 days, the fish are around and biting. Even on that 10th day, I’m not sure what the issue is, but anglers and my captains will tell me…”The fish were all around. We could see them or they would sniff the baits, but just wouldn’t take the baits!”

That was usually made up for on the other days of fishing when the dorado would be found in many areas from just inside the bait to the island and then around the point to El Rosario and Las Cruces.

Generally, the fish were 10-15 pounders although there were still persistent squirts in the 5 pound class around. But, larger 20-30 pounders were not uncommon. We also hooked some marlin and sailfish with most being released as well as some stray rooster fish that ran about 30 pounds near Espirito Santo Island.

This is the best mustache of the week! Don Slaiman and Captain Pancho from our Tailhunter Las Arenas fleet bust out the big smiles with two nice bull dorado on the beach.

Chris Chang owns an organic nursery in Canada and had never fished in Mexico before, but fishing with Tailhunters got plenty of dorado and, on his last day, a huge 300 pound blue marlin north of La Paz that he fought on a Penn 6/0 reel with 60 pound test and put in the boat in only about an hour. The gut hooked fish inhaled the green and orange lure all the way down it’s gullet. He was fishing with popular Captain Rogelio “Jolly Roger” Camacho.

There’s a zillion good things going on in this photo of Tyler Emard from Fullerton CA. Fishing with Captain Rogelio from our Taihunter La Paz fleet, Tyler fought this dorado…his first and biggest…for 20 minutes on light tackle…no belt…all arms and shoulders! He’s headed to the University of Arizona in a few weeks! Great colors on this photo!

The skies went from clear to this…as a wave or darkness hits the beach at Bahia de Los Muertos. There had been absolutely nothing on the advisories or radar about this. That’s why they are called “toritos.” (little bulls). These storms come out of nowhere with thunder, lightning, wind and rain and it’s almost like a baby hurricane. Ominous. The pangas had to scramble back to the beach for cover.

Seven minutes after the first photo, here’s what the beach looked like at Bahia de Los Muertos…a malestrom! Thirty minutes later, the sun was out…

Las Arenas provided some good action this week for Tailhunter clients including Steve Holguin from Los Angeles and his son, Marcos who is attending college in New York as the pair show off a set of dorado standing on the beach at Bahia de los Muertos with Captain Jorge of the Tailhunter fleet.

Susie Waters had never fished La Paz or ocean-fished before, but broke into it big time with a couple of days on the water with our Tailhunter La Paz fleet. This is just a super photo of her hanging the fish all by herself with big smiles.

Long Beach fishing veteran, Zach Linden, raced down for a last-minute trip this week and a couple of days of fishing. The fish gods smiled and Zach did some great action on ultralight tackle including this pair of La Paz dorado.

Rebecca Kendrick got into the thick of the dorado action with this nice bull mahi fishing with Captain Alfredo and deckie Blas. She had always wanted to fish Mexico and salt water and had a great first experience with a number of nice fish over several days of fishing.

It’s got a little sand on the forehead, but a great photo of Peter Knapp and Captain Pancho on the beach at Las Arenas with this nice-sized bull.

Grant Stark and Levi Fadoul put the wood to this thick bull dorado fishing north of La Paz last week. These two guys had too much fun all week. Always seemed to be cracking up!

UNPREDICTABLE EL NINO CONDITIONS AFFECT FISHING BUT DORADO DO THEIR BEST

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of July 20-27, 2014

With the exception of another of those surprise “torito” (little bull) storms that popped up on Thursday, it was a pretty good week of fishing for the most part.

This time of year, waters are extremely warm…actually, warmer than usual…as a result of the “el nino” situation. This has given rise to rapidly forming storms that are not shown on weather advisories in the morning. However, out of seemingly clear skies, huge thunderheads suddenly build and the skies grow dark within minutes. Winds start whipping and wave emerge from calm seas turning the ocean into churning froth. Wind-driven rain doesn’t fall so much as it shoots sideways from the gusts. It’s time to get the heck off the water!

Several weeks ago, one of these storms turned into a huge waterspout between Cerralvo Island and El Sargento and Las Arenas. We didn’t quite get that this week, but in the span of about 10 minutes clear skies went dark and the oceans got treacherous. The pangas had barely been on the water, but found themselves racing back to the beach made more perilous by waves now pounding the sands where the pangas had to land. Lighting strikes illuminated everyone scrambling around for shelter. Cell phone and electrical power gets cut off.

As the rains hit and everyone hunkers down….that’s pretty much all you can do. There’s a reason they call these “little bulls.” Within an hour or two…sometimes in the span of minutes…it’s over. The sun blazes back out. The winds turn off. The skies go clear and flat. Except for puddles of water, there’s no trace.

And that’s what happened Thursday morning.

But, the rest of the week was pretty grand!

LAS ARENAS

Fishing definitely improved over the week before. Again, dorado were center stage, but there were fewer punk 5 pound dorado and more respectable 10-20 pounders and all willing to charge pretty much water was in the water. Some boats did better than others, but then the next day the boat that did poorly would be the big boy boat. Consistently , ever panga we put on the water caught fish…or had opportunities to catch fish. One of the big problems is that the baits we have tend to be large. Hence, it takes longer than normal for the fish to really chomp the bait and get a hook down in their mouths. Anxious anglers would often tell me they pulled the trigger too soon before the dorado could eat and they would lose the hook-set and half-a-bait would come flying back to the boat…sans dorado!

LA PAZ

Still our most consistent area. Our La Paz boats rocked some really nice 20-40 pound fish this week as they have now since June. The fish extend right from La Paz Bay towards Espirito Santo Island then around the corner to about El Rosario/ Las Cruces where the larger bulls seem to have taken residence not too far from the beach. Co-incidentally, that’s where large schools of baitfish have been seen. We also got some roosterfish off the beaches.

The bigger news is the increased incidence of hookups with billfish including larger-than-normal sailfish and even some blue marlin. I don’t remember seeing so many hookups on blue marlin as I have the past two or three weeks. Most of the sails and marlin are getting released, but one fish that couldn’t be released was a hefty 300-pound blue.

WEATHER

El Nino effects keep coming. Days can start out with bright brilliant sunshine but by afternoon, the clouds roll in and we get tropical storms that can be pretty crazy. It can rain in one place and 100 yards away, it’s bone dry! And the rain can last 5 minutes of an hour. Then the sun comes blazing out. But, there’s some predictions of more afternoon rain this week.
