She’s one of the best! Donna Thompson gets our first yellowtail of the season putting the wood to two nice yellowtail off Cerralvo Island with live bait.

Two more of our super amigos…from Bakersfield, California…Ken Gragg and Carl Lange put a handful of pargo and a cabrila in the boat fishing just outside of Bahia de los Muertos. These are tough fish to pull out’ve the rocks!

Captain Jorge and Richard Branson from Virgin Airlines? Nope…it’s our amigo, Rick Kasper who actually has been a double for Branson, but as an actor and host of his own outdoor TV show has also been a double for Gary Bussey. He’s also a fun fisherman! He’s showing off a dorado and a sierra here although they let a few get away!

YELLOWTAIL AND PARGO MAKE A SHOWING…SO DOES DRIZZLE AND RAIN!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Jan. 18-25, 2015

The week started on some real high notes. Not only did we have some really fishing-condusive weather, but the fish decided to join in as well. However, as the week progressed, by the end of the week, not only did winter winds return, but we also got the surprise of rain which dampened things a bit. Fortunately, being the off-season, we didn’t have to cancel anyone’s fishing trips as they weren’t many folks fishing this week anyway.

However, let’s talk about fishing. The best news is that we finally got into yellowtail. The big fork tail jacks really laid low last year when El Nino conditions warmed the waters and made bait and the big fish a rarity. However, this week we took some nice quality-grade yellows around Cerralvo Island near the high spots both north and south ends with bait and iron with fish going 20-30 pounds. Some hefty hamachi! Hopefully, this is just the start of things to come.

The yellowtail require the cooler waters and normally, we don’t see many until about February or March. They stick around until about May when the waters start warming and we see the warm water species like dorado, billfish and wahoo move in. We barely had any yellowtail to speak of at all last year. We’re hopeful that the yellowtail we saw this week are the vanguard of a nice yellowtail season.

Another fish we really didn’t see last year were the pargo…the big snapper that come up in the springtime just like the yellowtail. These big red/ copper fish are powerful and in the spring come into the shallows to spawn. One of the most vicious fish to tangle with and a real frustrating game fish to put in the boat because of their power and the rock cover they love, we got a few of those this week as well. Most of the big ones get lost because they’re just rugged sluggers, but early in the week some 3-8 pounders came up (a good sized one is 15…a brute is 40!) so, like the yellowtail maybe this year we’ll get them back.

In addition to the yellowtail and the pargo, there were some dorado and sierra taken plus cabrilla.

Then, the wind came back up again from the north and as the weekend approached, skies got cloudy and a few days of rain hit us. As I’m writing this, we’re still looking at rain then it will let up next week and the forecast calls for some rain late in the week again as the month ends.

WHALES WATCHING ON BAHIA MAGDALENA GOING FULL

If you want to really do one of those “once-in-a-lifetime” things or check something off your “bucket list” our Bahia Magdalena Whale Watching is in full swing. The grey whales have come down from the Bering Sea in the longest migration of any animal on the planet. They showed up a bit early this year and we’re running daily trips to see them. They usually stay around until about mid-March and the bay is where they come to mate, give birth and basically hang out in the warm calm waters where we can get up close to them in their natural environment. Just a shout-out thank you to all our amigos who came to visit us at the Washington Sportsmans Show at the Seattle Fairgrounds in Puyallup, Washington. After shows in Sacramento and Denver and about 3,000 miles of driving, this was our third show of the year and it was a great time. We saw so many of our friends and signed up lots of amigos for their 2015 fishing trips with Tailhunters in 2015. We now have a few days to catch up and re-group then hit our next show in Portland at the Portland Expo Center from Feb. 4th to 8th. Barred pargo and cabrilla (Mexican seabass) like these two nice fish taken by the Montejano Brothers (Andy and Raphael) have been biting nicely inshore lately. Typical action for this time of year and tough to get outta the rocks. But GREAT eating!

Some fat sierra and schoolie dorado are were not uncommon this week. No roosterfish to show you because all the roosters were released!

The grey whales have arrived earlier than normal and are already in good numbers at Bahia Magdalena and we’re already running day trips to get on the water with them!

POST HOLIDAY BLUES

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Jan. 11-18, 2015

There weren’t that many fishermen around this week, either because there simply weren’t that many around or those that wanted to fish were kept off the water by pesky northern winds. But, this is typical of winter fishing in our area and frankly, it’s pretty common few weeks after Christmas not to have even many tourists in town. You could almost call La Paz “sleepy.” Even the locals are keeping it low key and under the radar, perhaps still recovering from the holidays. Stores, streets and restaurants are almost empty sometimes!

We did get a few folks out on the water with air temps in the mid-70’s and a bit choppy. Sierra were biting along the drop-off points where shallow water slopes into deeper areas like near the Las Arenas lighthouse and also in the channel areas where current move between rocky spot. As well, the sloping areas also produced jack crevalle and some pompano…both related plus their more popular cousin the rooster fish with some smaller school-sized fish that might have gone about 15 pounds.

Bonito were prevailant not to far from shore either and a few stray free-swimming dorado were hooked as well.

WHALES HAVE SHOWN UP EARLY IN BAHIA MAGDALENA!

Yes, please rub my head for me! We love getting our photo taken with visitors!

Normally, from about late January to late March, the grey whales take up residence at Bahia Magdalena where they spawn, breed and give birth. In these shallow warm waters, this is the end of the largest migration of mammals on earth as they come down from the Bering Sea near Alaska. We’ve started running daily trips to the Bay to spend a day getting close to these amazing gentle animals and it’s a great life-time experience for the whole family. 2015 TAILHUNTER/ WESTERN OUTDOOR NEWS PANGA SLAM & JACKPOT IS FILLING!

Captain Jorge and Verda Boyd started off the first day of last year’s Panga Slam with a nice bull dorado taken just off the area of La Ventana.

Tim Farrell took a photo of a trophy rooster fishing with Captain Archangel during last year’s Panga Slam. Tim caught several nice fish and released the all!

SOME SURPRISE SPECIES ADD ACTION!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of January 4-11, 2015

The New Year is off to a good start! We had some nicer days on the water this week. Some breezy days, but overall, some good days to be on the water, all things considered. It’s just a nice time to be in town. Sunshine and 75 degree days and 60 degree nights and not many tourists in town almost make it a “sleepy seaside city.” It’s really one of my favorite times in Baja.

For the fishing, there were some surprises. We got the usual winter-fare of inshore specials including some pargo liso…running about 5-10 pounds. Cabrilla in the 3-4 pound class. Some surprisingly large sierra this year up to about 5 pounds and some good fun with 4-6 pound bonito.

However, surprisingly, we had some appearances of some species we normally don’t see this early in the year. For one, we had a few of our anglers tie into some pre-season rooster fish! Normally, we don’t see roosters until maybe late February or March so these were a nice bonus. The fish ran about 10-20 pounds and were taken around the Las Arenas lighthouse and Bahia de Los Muertos.

The other surprise was the showing of small school-sized dorado. Perhaps 10 pounders, but great eating and again, we don’t usually see them in May so perhaps this is a sign of some early mahi moving into the area.

By the way, word has it that our scouts are already seeing gray whales over at Bahia Magdalena! It seems they’re coming a tad early as well. This is a great opportunity to get about as close to one of these wonderful huge animals as humanly possible without getting into the water! We’ll be running trips until about late February or Mid-March when the whales start swimming north again But for now, this is the time when the whales arrive after the longest and largest migration of any animal on Earth all the way from the Bering Sea to spend time mating and birthing in the warm lagoons of the western Coast of Baja. TAILHUNTER ON IT’S WAY TO DENVER

We just wrapped up the first of our road shows with an explosively great fun 4 days at the California State Fairgrounds for the Sacramento ISE show! With over 650 vendors it was the largest fishing and hunting exhibit in the history of the Sacramento ISE and IT WAS PACKED! Thanks to all our amigos who came out to see us and say hi and to also set up their La Paz fishing adventure with us. We had a great time and also a big thank you to everyone who brought us so many goodies…everything from sushi to Chinese pork buns…wine…See’s candy…homemade cookies…homemade cheesecake…homemade carmel corn…gourmet chocolate…cheese…bread…pastries…champagne…you’re the best. Also a special shout-out to the Tim Campbell family (Better known as the TIM and PAULA BUTTERWORTH FAMILY…I screwed up dangit!) who put together a little ice chest travel pack for us on the road filled with gourmet cheese…baguettes…marinated mushrooms…candies…seafood spread…wine and more! We were well stocked for our journeys!

But now…here we go again. We hit the road and are now on our way to Denver. We’ll be at the Denver Convention Center from Thursday to Sunday this week. Pretty typical inshore winter catch of some great eating, pargo, snapper, cabrilla and triggerfish.

Incredible day trips right now to swim in La Paz Bay with the whalesharks in the shallow waters! On any given day there are up to several dozen 10-15 foot “juveniles” in the bay.

Above or under the water, these gentle animals are a fantastic experience. This is about a 20 footer, feeding on the surface in only about 10 feet of water!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Dec. 21-28, 2014

The weather was tough on us this week. Quite a few windy days as is often the case during the winter months when the north winds come down and hit us and just make it difficult to get out or, even if we do, it’s just rugged out there or, the big waves make it tough to get bait. And that’s the way it was for the majority of the week.

I feel badly because most of the folks that fish this time of year are snow-birds just enjoying sunshine who want a day of fishing while in La Paz. This is unlike during the regular season when folks fish every single day of their vacation and are specifically in town to fish. For the folks now with only one day to fish, that means we either have to cancel; or they have to just gut-it-out and have a rough day; or we have to juggle their fishing days to find a day where the winds are diminished.

More often than not, we either have to tell folks who only have one specific day to fish that it’s best they not go out, or they go out and really just have a bad time and get beat up and wet and not catch much fish…and that’s not fun either.

On the other side, at least it’s sunny! Day time temps are in the low to mid-70’s and really pleasant. Although it was windy, winds should calm down by the time you’re reading this.

We did get out a few times this week. All of our fishing during the winter months are out’ve Las Arenas/ Bahia de Los Muertos areas. Because of the winds, waters are pretty turned over and green and dirty in some of our hot spots. However, we did get into some decent sierra along the beach drop-offs. Some were hefty 4-5 pound chunkers and ALWAYS great eating. There were a few small pargo, snapper and cabrilla caught. We had some school-sized rooster fish caught and released and the bonito helped provide some action as well.

As a side note, many folks don’t know that La Paz has become quite a mecca for whalesharks which have been increasing in numbers the last few season in La Paz Bay where they’re protected. At times there are 1/2 dozen to several dozen “juveniles” up to 15 feet long or more all in shallow water and great for snorkeling! We’re running 2-3 hour trips to swim with the whalesharks every day that the winds are favorable. The juveniles are just a few minutes away and it’s an incredible family once-in-a-lifetime experience. You are NOT allowed to touch or ride the animals but still…getting just a few feet away from these gentle animals (they are true sharks with no teeth that eat plankton, krill and other small critters) is something not to be missed.

OUR YEAR IN REVIEW! BRING ON 2015!

Well, 2014 is almost one for the books and I thought it would good to wrap up the year with a full review…

It was as crazy a year as I have ever had in my almost 20 years working here in La Paz.

With El Nino hovering, we entered the year with some trepidation. El Nino seems to have a zillion variables that change the whole complexion of fishing and sure enough, it started right from the get-go.

El Nino conditions are characterized by warmer than normal waters. Good in some ways, but bad in so many others. So, crazily, our waters never really did cool down. We started the year catching dorado which was a great surprise in some aspects, but the downside was not so good.

For one our cooler water species never really did show up. While the dorado were biting, we never got into the good yellowtail or the amberjack, sierra or pargo that are so popular in our cooler months. We got a few, but it had to be called a big disappointment. One aspect of the overly-warm water was the lack of bait.

From Idaho taking a break from teaching school, Mandy Pollock let’s Tailhunter Capt. Boli struggle with this big yellowtail from the north side of La Paz. Still a few yellowtail around and this was Mandy’s first trip to La Paz.

Baitfish require cooler waters so that nutrients come from the deep. The baitfish feed on the nutrients and without those necessities, bait either died off or moved away to find food. Insofar as we’re a live bait fishery and bait is an important aspect of our sportfishing, it makes it hard to fish, let alone catch fish without bait! This was to plague us throughout the year.

It didn’t help either that in the Bay of La Paz, bait catchers from the fish farms were scooping up what little bait was available, sometimes at night leaving virtually nothing for the sportfishing fleets and commercial local fishermen who rely on the bait to make their livings. It wasn’t until almost mid-year that the bait catching stopped. Surprisingly, our bait stocks suddenly increased!

But, bait was to be an issue all year long. We made do with what we could get. That often consisted of a mix of sardines, mackerel, caballitos, baby bonito, ballyhoo and dead bait like cut squid, cut bonito and the like.

It will produced some great catches throughout the year like the dorado, marlin, sailfish and some others. The most remarkable catches of the year were the rooster fish and wahoo. We had an above average year for rooster fish underscoring La Paz’s reputation as the “Roosterfish Capital of the World” with fish in the 30-80 pound class not uncommon.

Captain Jorge and our buddy, Rick Kasper, always has the knack for big fish like this world-class huge roosterfish caught just off the shallow beach near the Las Arenas lighthouse then released.

From Louisiana, Brian Davis stuck his giant roosterfish with Captain Pancho that might have tipped the scales into the triple digits, but was gratefully released.

As for wahoo, the cycle came around this year. After a few years of negligible wahoo to show, we had a fairly outstanding year for wahoo with fish in the 30-50 pound class and larger often taken and the best spots around Espirito Santo Island. For folks who had never caught a wahoo or rooster, this was the kind of year where many anglers finally got their first of each species, sometimes on the same day.

Lots of amigos got their first wahoos this year like Rich Pomeroy from Northern California who was on his first trip to La Paz.

The biggest issue of our year was the weather. It played havoc all year.

As is characteristic of El Nino years, storms are more common and we gritted our teeth and watched hurricanes and rainstorms threaten us and sometimes drop some rain on us and stormy conditions. We have over a dozen come our way, but dodged almost all of them until the big one finally turned on us in a surprise of historic proportions.

Hurricane Odile slammed into Baja with winds up to 150 miles per hour. It turned out to be the biggest hurricane in Baja history causing widespread devastation. La Paz was in it’s path and, although the fury of the storm was spent in about 6 hours, the destruction and aftermath were felt for weeks and La Paz and Baja are still in the rebuilding process.

As far as fishing, we were back to fishing within a week of the storm. However, since airports were shut down or destroyed, there was no way for clients to come into Baja and hence suffered many weeks of cancelations and lost bookings during the part of the season which is traditionally the busiest time of the year. The ripple effect on much of the economy will take a long time to recover.

But interestingly, right after the hurricane, fishing took off! Some of the best fishing took place in the weeks and months post-Odile with dorado, wahoo, sailfish, marlin, and other species biting better than they had at any time of the year and with continued warm waters through Christmas, continued to bite!

Lucie and her husband, Tom, only had one day to fish and said they’d be “happy with a small fish to eat for dinner at our Tailhunter Restaurant.” No pressure. No stress! Well, so much for that ! She caught and released this nice sailfish. See the photos below, she also got a wahoo. Plus the 3rd photo down, her husband also got several nice dorado!

One day fishing…not bad! Guys come for years trying to get a wahoo. Lucie Merkle gets a sailfish (released) plus a wahoo and some dorado!

Professor Tom Merkle from San Jose CA shows off another nice dorado fishing out’ve Bahia de Los Muertos on one of the days that the winds were down. He and his wife also got a wahoo and released a sailfish!

She is soooo good at this ! Donna Thompson got into the fishing report again with this hefty hefty roosterish in the channel between La Ventana and Cerralvo Island. This fish was released! Surprising to have such quality roosters still around this late in the season, but no complaints!

Roger Thompson is a regular poster child for fishing our area and he always sticks big fish like this trophy wahoo he tries to “curl” for the camera! Nicely done (AGAIN!), Roger!

MID-WEEK WINDS SLOW FISHING BUT FISH STILL AROUND

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Dec. 1-7, 2014

It was a tad on the breezy side this week as north winds seem to be gradually taking hold here as winter approaches. Still, some great sunny days to be in La Paz as the city takes on it’s Christmas face for the holidays.

We’ve been doing almost all our fishing out’ve Las Arenas as the waters outside of La Paz Bay continue to be on the rougher side and often turned over and murky with fishing sketchy at best the last two weeks since the winds kicked it up a notch.

However, with out Las Arenas fleet pushing off at Bahia de Los Muertos, even when it’s windy, we’re better protected and the fishing grounds are much much closer plus there’s more variety of fish.

This week, there weren’t many anglers out, but there’s still some school-sized dorado meandering around. Most are about 10 pounds, but there’s an occasional 20-30 pounder still out there. Wahoo and billfish are not out’ve the question with most holding near the south end of Cerralvo Island, but there’s also been some bites just minutes outside of Bahia de Los Muertos just north of the big houses but before you reach Punta Perico.

Inshore, there’s still some nice rooster fish to 30 pounds hanging around plus cabrilla and small pargo (snapper) in the rocks and we’re seeing more jack crevalle and sierra near the beaches as well.

Mid-week, we got slammed by some incredible winds. Guts up to 50-70 mph ripped into the area and our normally placid seas turned into a cauldron we rarely see. Check out the waves hitting the breakwater at Las Cruces north of La Paz. That’s Cerralvo Island in the background.

DORADO BITE SANDWICHES BIG WINDS ROARING IN MID-WEEK

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Nov. 23-30, 2014

What a freakish week we had here in La Paz. This is the time of year when things transition from warmer conditions to cooler conditions. With it, we start to get more and more windy days with winds whipping from the north.

Well, lately, we’ve had more “breezy days.” That’s normal. It’s expected. I never expected what we had this week!

They talk about winter roaring in like a lion. Well, it didn’t just roar. It tore in like a freight train! Tuesday to Thursday, wind of 30-50 mph generated huge waves and gust up to 70 mph had the port captain closing down the port and keep folks off the water It was pretty incredible to watch…from the shore! Definitely NOT a good time to try to be on the water!

Huge waves crashed against beaches and against the concrete sidewalks of the waterfront Malecon throwing giant plumes of spray and water as far as parked cars across the street. Strolling pedestrians were sent scampering each time a wave crashed in much the same way that kids run through sprinklers in the summer except one could get seriously soaked by the giant swell. Even within the bay, it was uncharacterically white-capped and foaming. Many folks just parked themselves on the shore or in a nearby restaurant or bar to watch the display!

Then, on Friday, it pretty much disappeared!

And out we went fishing again. Just like before the storm, the dorado bit pretty readily with fish in the 20-30 pound class not uncommon but decent numbers of 10-15 pound fish as well. Some rooster fish and pargo were also hooked. The biggest issue was that those ripping winds really tore up the water and turned things over. For our guys who went out’ve La Paz, all the found was green and brown dirty water. The better fishing was from Las Arenas where the area was a bit more protected from the winds although waters were still not optimal. But at least we found fish!

Really hard to get a read on things. Not many folks in town or many fishermen as Thanksgiving week isn’t a big week here in La Paz for tourism. But, still a nice time to spend onshore as the sun was still comfortably warm. We’ll get a run of folks in between now and Christmas, but this week, was just nice to spend onshore and watching Mother Nature do her thing!

Jesse had one day to squeeze in for fishing and made the most of it with a nice rack of dorado to put in the freezer. If he’s not smiling, it’s cuz he told me had had a wahoo estimated at 60 pounds all the way to the boat before it broke loose!

Yes! There’s crazy roosterfish still around. They started showing up about a month ago and have been running up to about 50 pounds! Brian Mee from Eastern Washington was fishing light tackle and shows off a great sampel of the kind of roosters we’re getting. This big boy was released!

Carlos Cifuentes had never been fishing before he tried a day on the water with our Tailhunter Capt. Armando fishing from Bahia de los Muertos! They got 4 nice dorado and lost several others prompting Carlos to laughing tell us, “My shoulders are so sore! I never caught fish before like this!”

Some of the wahoo we’re getting are just minutes from leaving the beach just around the corner from Bahia de Los Muertos. Captain Jorge put the guys into this fat ‘hoo!

Our gran amigo, Art Savedra, the famous “Captain Hook” was here working the Baja 1000 race but stayed a few extra days to get in some fishing and scuba. He’s here on the beach with Captain Armando and dinner!

DORADO STILL AROUND BUT OTHER SPECIES HELP OUT AS COOLER CONDITIONS COME IN!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Nov. 16-23, 2014

A bit windier this week with a few days that were really bouncy, but still overall really pleasant conditions. But, as we get closer to winter we’re going to see more winds and especially winds from the north. But, for that very reason is why we’re doing most of our fishing from Las Arenas right now since we can launch from the beach at Bahia de Los Muertos where we’re a bit more protected from the winds and it’s also easier since the fishing is much closer…like RIGHT THERE!

I’m not kidding. We’re getting a variety of fish within minutes of where we launch. The bay itself is holding some decent rooster fish up to about 40 pounds. By the northern point of rocks, there’s jack crevalle and cabrilla. As soon as you pass the point, drop the lures and there’s always the possibility of wahoo literally within a hundred yards of the rocks! Go south or just outside to the buoys and you can hit dorado.

Anywhere in between, there’s also the chance of more wahoo, billfish (sails mostly), pargo, and bonito. Great variety and in between these gusty days, conditions are about as pleasant as you could want with air temps in the low 80’s and water temps just about the same. Just be flexible on your fishing days, if you can, in case the day you want to go out looks like the wind is going to kick in.

Keep an eye out as well. There’s so much sea life out there. Schools of dolphin…sea turtles…whalesharks…blue whales…manta rays. Pretty incredible time to be in La Paz!

We just wanted to take the time to wish you and your family a very peaceful and happy Thanksgiving. We’ve had a crazy tumultuous year here in La Paz. Mother Nature did what Mother Nature does and not much to be done about it except roll with it and try to keep smiling. Crazy El Nino year affected the fishing. Storms and hurricanes. Winds and heat…we pretty much had it all. But, through it all, so many of you kept us smiling and laughing and remembering how very blessed we are to even be here. Thanks for your support. Thanks for your patience. Thanks for your friendship. Tailhunter tribal family is the best! God bless you all!

Captain Armando helps Marty Koschnitzke with a nice bull dorado caught out’ve Bahia de los Muertos. Marty squeezed in a day of fishing and had a few dorado and other species put into the panga.

A much “larger model” for Mike Caray from Portland OR on his first trip with us fishing La Paz. Good day on dorado with our Tailhunter La Paz fleet.

SEASONS CHANGING – SO IS THE FISHING – AND THE FISHERMEN!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Nov. 2-9, 2014

After nervously watching to see if late-season hurricane “Vance” was going to make up it’s mind and give us a scare, it turned into not much of anything except a few raindrops and some wind! And we’re not complaining. It’s pretty late in the year to be seeing storms like this and, you can tell how many storms we have had by the fact that we’ve almost gone through the whole alphabet and are on letter “V” for “Vance.” I think we’ve had enough for awhile.

Anyway, in anticipation of some kind of stormy event, most folks stayed off the water Tuesday and Wednesday just as a precaution. Admittedly, Tuesday was really windy…far too windy to want to put anglers out there getting wet and bounced around. So, it was easier to just tell folks to hang out in town.

However, on the other days, we did have some OK dorado action with fish in the 10-20 pound class. Most of the bite was near the south end of Espirito Santo Island and near El Rosario plus just outside of Bahia de Los Muertos.

The latter area seems to hold the most variety right now as we transition towards cooler water fishing. In addition to the dorado, we also hooked a few billfish including sailfish and small striped marlin…pargo…cabrilla…jack crevalle and a few more of the decent sized 30-50 pound rooster fish. But, the majority of the bite this week consisted of a variety of inshore fish like the jacks, pargo and bonito..even some small amberjack and sierra which are normally cooler water fish. Fun light tackle action.

It will be interesting to see what we do with this full moon right now. But, as of mid-week it hasn’t affected the fishing very much. There’s a definite drop-off in the number of anglers this week as we head into November. So, that by itself makes it hard to gauge the fishing. It’s hard to be completely accurate. When there’s a large number of our anglers out there scattered over the fishing grounds, it’s easier to find the hot spots. Plus, the “anglers” are changing as well. From March to October, we have more hardcore anglers, but now with winter setting in, we have more snow-birds who just want some sunshine and maybe a day on the water fishing.

Wahoo like these were the highlight of a somewhat erratic week of fishing that saw some great action, but also some slow fishing during the middle of the week. However, the appearance of these speedy trophy fish were a big plus around the south end of Cerralvo Island.

Jeff Sakuda and Marianne Sugawara make several trips a year to La Paz and had a good day to start with this big-headed wahoo while they pose on the beach at Bahia de los Muertos.

John Rogers from San Ramon CA has fished with us before, but says his boys, Jay and Jared are now “hooked” and “can’t wait to come back!” after three days of fishing like this including dorado, cabrilla, pargo, bonito and their first marlin.

Captain Blas helps out our Washington amigo, Nash Johnson, with a nice sailfish that he battled on light tackle for 45 minutes north of La Paz. The fish was released. They also got dorado as well.

Mike Vonderahe and Mark Chism had to almost canceled their trip after Hurricane Odile, but were able to make it down from Oregon and started their fishing days off with some decent dorado fishing like these! They also got in some scuba diving later in the week with whale sharks!

Big smiles for a big cabrilla caught by Niels Michaelsen who came all the way from Finland! Captain Boli jumps into the picture as well. The big fish was taken near Espirito Santo Island.

Just to show off some of the variety this week, Erick and Nash Johnson showed up with some pargo mulatto (barred pargo) and red snapper. Dad and son are from Washington.

Dennis is from Greece! He’s got a nice bull dorado fishing with Captain Victor and our Tailhunter Las Arenas fleet. That’s El Sargento/ La Ventana in the background.

We call him, “The Mayor!” He’s one of our most favorite amigos and was not going to let the hurricane prevent him from a few days in La Paz. George Gill started his trip with some nice pargo and snapper. He also had a full day pulling on dorado as well!

Whalesharks have returned to the warm shallow waters of La Paz and this past week was a great opportunity to snorkel with them!

SOME SLOW SPOTS BUT OVERALL A DECENT WEEK OF FISHING WITH VARIETY!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Oct. 12-19, 2014

Perfect weather. Perfect water. Sunny days. Just a hint of breeze. Very little humidity. Could not ask for better conditions. It has been some of the best weather of the season. Like a postcard for the Chamber of Commerce!

So…what happened to the fish?

The week started well with a nice jag of wahoo and a smattering of tuna mixed in with decent dorado, especially around Cerralvo Island. Dark-colored deep-running Rapalas put the hurt to the wahoo…up to 50 pounds…live bait enticed the tuna…while the dorado ate pretty much anything. Some sailfish and marlin were hooked. The week looked promising!

Then, it sort of just fizzled. It was like the fish took a holiday or something. We struggled to get even a single dorado to bite and we resorted to having to go inshore for sierra, pargo and cabrilla. Mix it up with some rooster fish and jack crevalle and that’s the bite.

I wish I knew. Last week when we had a full moon…in fact we had a full lunar eclipse…the fish bit pretty nicely. This week with a minimal moon, the fish are all lock-jawed.

Maybe things are cooling down a little too fast. You can feel a bit of fall/winter in the air and northern winds are starting to creep in. So, maybe the fish are adjusting. But the middle of the week the bite literally just seemed to die.

As we turned the corner into the weekend, thankfully things picked up! For no explainable reason. I didn’t notice anything that had changed. But… Dorado started crashing again plus a few wahoo, billfish and rockfish (pargo and cabrilla) so that rescued the latter part of our week. Hopefully things stay on the upside for awhile as we head down the backside of the season.

DONATIONS FOR HURRICANE RELIEF SNOWBALL FROM GENEROUS AMIGOS!

Collected over 500 pounds in two weeks!

Alen Jones, Victonda Sheasby with Dr. Dennis and Tina Harper showed up with several tables full of school supplies, clothes for kids, playthings that filled about 100 pounds of ice chests and suitcases!

Nash and Steve Johnson from Washington got contributions from friends and neighbors and had a full load of clothes and medical items like aspirin and first aid supplies.

Two long-time friends of ours, “Modelo” Dave Pollard and Hector Chacon from S. California brought in two full ice chests stuffed to the limits with goods. Their respective families put out the word with with friends and the donations started rolling in. In addition to travel-sized toothbrushes and toothpaste, shampoos and school items, their daughters hand rolled dozens of t-shirts so that could pack tightly into two 70-quart ice chests!

The generosity continues. It started as a trickle just after Hurricane Odile almost a month ago and has turned into a wonderful flood and outpouring from so many of our friends and clients. Over the last two weeks we have been posting pictures of some of our Tailhunter friends, and there are more this week. However, this is by no means all of them! There have been so many donations. Some bring enough for a group of sherpas to carry. Others bring a bag or two or fill some empty space in the corner of a suitcase or tackle box. It’s all fantastic! For those who lost so much…or everything…it’s all appreciated. And it’s almost overwhelming that we’re speechlessly grateful.

Since Jill started the drive, she’s probably collected over 500 pounds of supplies and items in just the last TWO WEEKS ALONE! And more arrives daily! She’s making sure it’s all accounted for and going to needy groups where it will do the most good.

So on behalf of all of us at Tailhunters, God bless you all for your help and big hearts! We are blessed and humbled beyond words.

Late breaking news! SUNDAY…Wow! Lookit this! WAHOO DAY! Anyone in the S. California fishing industry knows pro Danny Kadota. He and his daughter Alexa were with Captain Victor today and got THREE wahoo and had another one bite through 250 pound mono! Check out Alexa’s massive ‘hoo!

FOOTBALL SEASON FINALLY? The football-sized yellowfin tuna finally made an appearance for the year. There weren’t many of them, but the sprinkling of fish were a nice surprise the last two weeks like this one by Steve Snead from Boise Idaho, who had a great week. He’s here with Captain Pancho.

Don Busse found a hot spot for rock fish this past week showing off a nice rack of cabrilla and big triggers. Our amigo was fishing with Captain Pancho.

Louie Sanchez, was not going to be denied his Baja trip to celebrate his 50th birthday and anniversary with his wife and family. After the hurricane, they jumped through all kinds of hoops to get down from home and Denver and got in some OK dorado fishing.

First-time tuna for Ken Campbell from Lakewood CA with amigo, Jeremy Friez (helping out holding up the tail). Next time we’ll get Ken to eat the heart…as is the custom with first-time tuna takers!

Steve Snead had a great story. He finally got his marlin off the bucket list. He was already hurting from a bad back, then tied into this gorgeous 150-pound class striped marlin. On light tackle, Steve and his back battled the first for 45 tough minutes. He got the fish out just long enough to take a picture then released it swimming strong. He came back to shore and went bed with a big smile but completely whupped.

She’s a champ! Young Sierra Sanchez is only 8-years-old, but was quite a trooper coming down to La Paz and fishing for the first time. The youngster is from the Denver, Colorado area and shows off her first dorado proudly with Captain Joel.

Determined to make it down, Steve Walker from idaho and his amigo, flew into Loreto then took our 5-hour shuttle to La Paz to make sure not to miss their fishing trip! Steve’s got a nice big bull on the gaff here that he caught north of La Paz.

I don’t know how he stays so clean fishing in all white clothes all day! But, Chris Malley had a pretty good week including these two yellowfun tuna he caught off Bahia de Los Muertos!

Don Busse and his gang…Ken Campbell…Jeremy Frieze…John Gibbs…Jim Adair…Brad Baker…Angelo Oliverio…and Chris Malley…brought in several hundred pounds of supplies and clothes for Jill’s hurricane relief efforts! it filled several duffle bags and ice chests! Since the hurricane, Jill has collected over 400 pounds of things for needy folks post-Odile.

Wiley Randolph from Fullerton CA…another big heart ….and a great shopper…brought down brand new kids’ shoes, schools supplies and medical first aid things for Jill’s hurricane relief efforts.

Jill, Cortez, Sierra and Louie Flores…all the way from Denver for the week and stuffed their bags with clothes, schools supplies and other great stuff for the hurricane relief. Big smiles and big hearts. Thanks to a wonderful family.

AIRPORTS OPEN – FISHERMEN COMING BACK – SO ARE THE FISH!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Oct. 5-12, 2014

Since hurricane Odile, three weeks ago, we’ve played cat-and-mouse with some erratic weather that seems to keep popping up and dropping some thundershowers on us now and then. Mostly, it’s been great weather, but like the rest of the season, we do have to keep watching the weather reports and the horizon to check for building thunderheads.

However, for the first time since as long as I can remember, I’m looking at the weather forecasts the last few days and into the next few weeks and there’s zero precipitation forecast. There are no little “weather icons” on the internet with little clouds and thunderbolts or rain icons on top of the daily advisories! We’ve got gorgeous 95 degree sunny weather for days and fishing conditions could not be better.

As for the fishing, it’s making a comeback.

The fish got hit pretty hard too with the crazy weather and green dirty water really mixed it up from the storms and the run-off and it takes times to settle in. Each week, the water seems to get a little better.

Fishing isn’t great, but it’s good most days and there’s even some jags of “very good” thrown in.

LA PAZ FISHING

Dorado have been the most consistent players, especially for our Tailhunter La Paz fleet. There are spots of dorado just inside La Paz Bay and in various places around Espirito Santo Island, but the best concentration and larger fish are around the Rosario / Las Cruces area in the channel between La Paz peninsula and Cerralvo Island. Fish aren’t bit, but they’re fun decent fish of 10-20 pounds with an occasional 30 pounder. Some days are better than others. Some boats will get limits some days while others right next to them will hit only a handful of fish or less. But, the fish are there!

Likewise, there seems to be a nice bit of marlin and sailfish around right now. Most have been caught incidentally while fishing for other species, but we’ve been hooking them all last week. Not alot, but every day is different. We had one day where almost every one of our pangas hooked at least one billfish. The next day there were only 2 hooked. Next day nothing. Day after that there were 4. All fish either broke off or were released except one which was kept and donated.

As a little sidebar, we had 2 wahoo hooked and cut off as well this week.

LAS ARENAS

This area has been a bit of a puzzle this past week. The biggest news is that we got our first football yellowfin tuna in a long long time. There’s some spots of tuna that keep popping up around Cerralvo Island with some fish up to 100-pound reported by commercial fishermen.

The bad news is that we only got about a dozen footballs all week that went 12-20 pounds. That’s it. There are so many bonito around that you catch about 20 bonito to get one tuna…if at all. I mean, it’s alot of fun and alot of action. But, if you’re looking for some good ahi meat to take home, it’s alot of energy. Still, it’s nice to have the tuna around!

The other downside is that if you spend the better part of your day chasing tuna, you won’t get much else. So, the counts have not been real good for our Tailhunter Las Arenas fleet. When they DO chase other species, there’s dorado around and the pangas will get 2-8 fish hooked up per day and the counts differ. It all depends if the guys went after the tuna or not.

So, what alot of our guys are doing is getting their dorado and ice chests filled by fishing La Paz, then specifically going for tuna with our other Tailhunter Fleet at Las Arenas. Seems to work out OK.

Last minute update: Five wahoo taken on two pangas late Sunday up to 50 pounds!

HURRICANE UPDATES

We’re up an running. Airports are open. Flights are in. The Los Cabos Airport officially opened months earlier than anticipated on Oct. 3rd and welcomed their first flights on United and Alaska on Oct. 8th with mariachi bands and water cannon salutes! Other airlines are coming online. La Paz and Loreto Airports have been open for several weeks. Still doing some cleanup in the streets and to some businesses and homes, but the heavy work is mostly done and most things are running like normal. Most visitors would never even know anything happened! Come fishing!
