La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay Fishing Report from Tailhunter Sportfishing for Week of March 12-19, 2017

Yes, yellowfin this week! This is our amiga, Taylor Murphey from Lakewood CA fishing on her uncle’s boat with Captain Hugo who hung this nice YFT just south of Cerralvo Island. The tuna were taking Rapalas as well as chunked squid.

Always in the fish and always with the great photo, Roger Thompson with a pretty wahoo on the gaff off the south end of Cerralvo. The wahoo this week were also off the rocks just off Punta Perrico.

Portland, Oregon in the house! Austin Tighe had just one day to fish on this trip and got essentially our first and biggest tuna of the season fishing with Captain Victor and posing on the beach at Bahia de los Muertos.

The right kind! Tal Nazani with some good-sized and GREAT EATING cabrilla (Mexican seabass). It has been a good few weeks for the feisty reef fish.

If you want some tough action, look no further than the schools of jack crevalle that are near the rocks and beaches right now! Related to roosterfish, there’s a reason the Mexican name for them is “toro.”(Bull). Captain Armando is the masked man!

What great colors on this fresh one! Taylor Murphey had herself quite a week with a variety of fish including this yellowtail hung on a Rapala in the same spot where tuna and wahoo were taken this week. Fishing with Captain Hugo.

As mentioned above, good week for the tasty cabrilla, but with all the bait in Muertos Bay, hordes of bonito have provided some awesome rod-bending as well.

I’ve posted so many photos of our amiga, Donna Thompson! But that’s because she’s always nailing the fish including another early-season yellowfin tuna!

BEST WEEK of the SEASON…FINALLY!

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay Fishing Report for Week of March 12-19, 2017

Finally, after so many up-and-down-weeks of windy weather and cold waters, Mother Nature smiled and sent calm seas, gentle breezes and warming waters!  The result was a variety of fish we haven’t seen so far this season and is encouraging now that we’re finally getting away from the erratic weather of winter and finally moving towards spring!  For the moment, we reveled in it, as we’re not quite out’ve the clutches of winter quite yet as forecasts show more wind is on the way.

But for now, it’s nice to have a decent report to show-off.

Not only did we get into some of our regular winter catches, but the quickly warming waters produced unusual pelagic blue-water species we usually don’t see until later in the season.  But who’s complaining?  It was far from wide-open, don’t get me wrong.  But the variety was a great bonus.  It was almost a “I-have-no-idea-what-we-will-catch-today” kind of fishing.  Some days really had some nice action and with many first-timers or snowbirds fishing who really only fish one day of their vacation, this kind of fishing was ideal for having some fun and catching some dinner too!  Boats side-by-side often caught different fish that didn’t seem to synch with the time of the year!

Inshore cold-water species this week included a smattering of yellowtail, several varieties of pargo and snapper, some really nice cabrilla (sea bass) out’ve the rocks, plus hefty bad-tempered jack crevalle, bonito, and even some sierra which should be abundant this time of year, but have rarely made an appearance.

But the blue-water species really sparked some raised eye-brows.  It’s March yet some fun-sized 25-30 pound tuna showed up at the southside of the island. These are our first verified tuna of the season.   So, did wahoo and even some respectable dorado.  These are species we normally would not see until May or so depending on the water temperature.  And, I think that’s the key!  Water temps were showing 70-75 degrees and not as green and dirty as they had been in previous weeks when winds were kicking up.  It remains to be seen what will happen this coming week when forecasts show that winds will roll in again and predominate for the better part of the week.

Another variable that worked in our favor was the presence of a variety of bait.  Unfortunately, no sardines showing up, but larger baits like ballyhoo, mackerel, small jacks worked well as live and dead baits.  Cut fresh squid worked as well, but slow trolling Rapalas and Yo-Zuris produced big strikes as well.  Interestingly, dragging the big crank baits over rocky areas that should have produced cabrilla, pargo, and yellowtail resulted in open-water surprises from tuna and wahoo…in shallow water!  As I often tell folks, you don’t have to go out far in our area to get the glamour species!   Dropping and jigging yo-yo iron also worked!

We’ll keep you posted!  Things are changing!

La Paz- Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay Fishing Report from Tailhunter Sportfishing for Week of March 5-12, 2017

Feisty jack crevalle and sunny days just near the rocks at Muertos Bay provided great fun and bent rods.

Gary Wagner at his place at Rancho Costa in Bahia de los Muertos took this nice yellowtail mid-week. Gary tells us there’s a ton of bait in the bay.

Another jack crevalle lip-gaffed ready for the photo then a quick release!

Thanks for the great time, Bakersfield! We had blast at the Fred Hall Central Coast Fishing Show this past week. Thanks to everyone who visited and came to say hi or sign up for visits to La Paz!

WATER STILL OFF BUT GOOD WEEK OF ACTION!

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay Fishing Report for Week of March 5-12, 2017

For once, the weather cooperated and we didn’t have too much wind.  We’re finally getting closer to spring and away from some really crazy winter weather.  The result was a pretty good week for fishing action.  Not alot of big fish, but there were some big yellowtail and pargo lost.  However, there seemed to be plenty of inshore action characteristic of this time of year with a great variety of fish.

There were a few dorado, but there were some big-time 10-20 pound jack crevalle.  Good numbers of bonito.  A surprising number of 3-8 pound cabrilla, pargo and red snapper as well, despite the waters remaining pretty cold, green and dirty from so much wind for so long.  There’s an incredible amount of mackerel and ballyhoo in Muertos Bay which should be bringing in the fish any time!  C’MON SPRING!

HERE WE COME SALT LAKE CITY ISE SHOW!

Jilly and I will see you this week at the International Sportsmans Expo at from Thursday to Sunday at the South Town Expo Center just south of Salt Lake City, Utah.

We just finished a bang-up show at the Fred Hall Central Valley Fishing and Hunting Show at the Kern Co. Fairgrounds and now count 8 shows down and 4 to go for our 2017 Tailhunter Tour!

We’re now on our way back to one of our favorite city at Salt Lake City for the International Sportsman’s Expo.  This is a big show and goes from Thursday to Sunday and it always fun with so much to see and do!  We’re filling rapidly for 2017 but still have some spots available for your La Paz fishing trip so talk to us or get in touch with us ASAP!  We want to make sure we have you covered!

La Paz – Las Arenas / Muertos Bay Fishing Report from Tailhunter Sportfishing for Week of Feb. 27-March 5, 2017

He made the most of one day to fish! Mike Sinott from Tilamook, Oregon found some sunshine and a quality yellowtail fishing with Captain Victor just outside of Bahia de los Muertos! First time for Mike with us!

Our good friend, Ken Gragg, from Bakersfield got himself a nice yellowtail earlier in the week, and ran into
“double Trumps” on the beach!

From Folsom CA, Mike McGuffin, was able to get his family out early in the week and got an early season dorado and a sierra. We haven’t seen many sierra this year!

Pretty typical of our winter-season fishing, Garrett Sills from Utah with a cabrilla and yellow snapper.

This guy is everywhere, but needs to smile a little bit! He’s all puckered up! Captain Pancho with The Donald. I think if all politicians took some time to go fishing, the world would be a better place!

Thanks Long Beach and all the amigos and Tailhunter Tribe members who came to see us this past week at the Fred Hall Fishing Show at the Long Beach Conventione Center! It was a grand time…as always!

WEATHER MORE COOPERATIVE…FISH NOT SO MUCH…THEN THE WEATHER CAME BACK!

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay Fishing Report for Week of Feb. 27-March 5, 2017

The week started off better than expected with sunny skies and relatively calm seas and minimal winds.  Given how erratic it has been over the previous weeks with wind, rain, and other crazy conditions, it was a welcome thing to put folks on the water and have them actually ENJOY not getting bounced around!

I think however, even the fish didn’t know what to do with it.  We had some great schools of mackerel fire up in Bahia de los Muertos with yellowtail and some indications of possibly tuna feeding as well under the yellowtail.  The reality didn’t quite match the excitement.  We got a few yellowtail.  Really nice quality fish and lost a few, and no tuna showed up when our boats were there, but other than some dorado and a few reef fish like cargo and cabrilla, the fish seemed to be a bit lock-jawed.  But, at least it was encouraging to get into some better quality fish like these yellowtail. Just no volume and nothing consistent.

It looked like it might be a decent week, but as the weekend hit, crash…thunder, lightning, wind, and rain hit us again and that pretty much shut things down.  Back to winter!

I did sent out some recon boats to check out fishing the La Paz side given that it’s been such a windy winter and my La Paz captains are aching to get out’ve the blocks and get going, but the waters were still very green, cold and dirty…for now.  The winds will have to settle for the waters to settle.  Spring can’t come soon enough!

WHALES STILL HANGING OUT

Mike McGuffin got to spend a day at Mag Bay with us hanging out with the whales.

Almost coming out to the end of our whale-watching season, but Mike McGuffin and his family from Folsom CA had a nice little day spending time with the whales.

NEW TRIBE MEMBER!

I just had to post this.  Sorry to dote.  He’s our first grandchild,  Nolan Frederick Reid last Sunday night.  Jill and I were there in Vegas all weekend sleeping in the hospital parking lot waiting for him to arrive, but he took his time!  When he still hadn’t shown up, Jill had to make the call that we would have to cancel her appearing at the Boise Sportsmans’ Show and cancel her flight.  So sorry, Boise!  We’ll make it up to you next year!

Then, Nolan showed up!

I only had time to see him for a few minutes.  I have yet to hold him but only kiss mom and rush out the door and hit the road to get from Vegas to Long Beach to set up the booth for the Fred Hall Show.  I arrived at 3 a.m.  Can’t wait to get back to Vegas in two weeks on our way to Salt Lake City to hold the little guy!

THANKS LONG BEACH AND SO-CAL!  SEE YOU IN BAKERSFIELD!

Had another spectacular outing this past week at the Long Beach Convention Center for the 5-day Fred Hall Fishing and Boating Show.  The aisles were packed with thousands every day and I’m hoarse from all the talking even tho’ I used my microphone system!  What a blast!  Great to see you all and thanks for all of you who brought gifts and birthday wishes.  You’re the best!  Lots of bookings for La Paz fishing too!

We now pack up the van for the Bakersfield Fairgrounds for the Sportsman’s Show there from Friday to Sunday.  Come see us and say hi!

Here’s some photos from some of the fun!

Dave Balthius, the head man at Costa Sunglasses came out to visit from Florida!

He braved the snows of Idaho to visit the Fred Hall Show for the first time, Tom Mullican will be back to visit us twice this year!

The best part of the week was a visit by my dad who just celebrated his 90th birthday!

So many great cards and birthday gifts from friends!

All-around good guy, Pat McDonell, head editor of Western Outdoor News.

The best! The famous “twins” Caroline Collette and Judy Passorello who work with us at Western Outdoor News for the Tuna Jackpot Tournament each November in Cabo San Lucas.

Ty and Spike! Out of control and we wouldn’t have it any other way!

Love these folks! Always a party!

That’s our story!

GREEN COLD WATER…AGAIN!  (But wait…)

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay Fishing Report for Week of Feb. 20-27, 2017

It was a chilly windy and even rainy week in the La Paz area this past week.  You had a little bit of everything and from day-to-day, the weather patterns were so erratic it was hard to pinpoint.  You could go through several different “conditions” all in the same day or even moving a mile or two away produced completely different conditions.  But, that’s how it’s been all winter.  Up down and sideways.

The effect on the fishing and fishermen has been just as erratic.  We normally, don’t have that many folks out on the water anyway during the winter, but the few walk-in clients we’ve had have been disappointed when we turn then away after warning them of impending winds and rough water or…they decide to go out anyway and, except for the occasional flat day, they get tossed all over and the fishing is not that good.

After several months of pretty consistent wind, also, the waters are green, cold and cloudy from all the turbulence. My captains on both the Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay side as well as my captains in La Paz tell me the waters are really turned over.  That’s going to take awhile to settle down…once the winds consistently take a powder.  The upside is that this is the kind of winter conditions we need.  The colder water brings in the nutrients.  That brings in the baitfish.  That’s a good sign for the upcoming fishing season.  In the past two years with El Nino, the waters stayed warm and the nutrients for the baitfish never showed up.  Ergo, there wasn’t much baitfish!

Just the same, there were some small windows of fishing available!  Or, if you were willing to brave the elements there were some scattered fish to be caught.

There’s a few ranging dorado either holdovers from last year or the advance scouts for the upcoming season.  They’ve been running between 8-12 pounds.  We also found some yellowtail off the south end of Cerralvo Island and Punta Perrico just outside of Bahia de los Muertos.  Mackeral are the preferred bait or fishing the yo-yo iron, but the bait is key.  However, if the waters are too rough, it’s hard to catch the bait.  The yellowtail we caught were nice grade 20-25 pound fish.   There’s also jack crevalle, bonito, snapper and cabrilla.  I’m surprised we’re not catching more sierra this time of year.

It's been breezy in Bahia Magdalena for the whalewatching this year, but on the calm days, the whales have been more than cooperative to come visit with the boaters!

Can you scratch this little itch on my nose?

Wil you scratch my nose for me? My mom can’t do it for me!

WHALE WATCHING STILL GOING WELL

We’re still running our daily trips out to Bahia Magdalena for the whale watching.  It’s been a bit windy and breezy this season, but the whales are literally a “stone’s throw” from the beach so it’s been fun and great to see so many folks enjoying communing with these awesome creatures with whom we share the planet.

We only have probably just a few more weeks until they start heading back north to the Bering Sea so if you’re interested in a day or multi-day trip, let us know!  Write me directly at Jonathan@tailhunter.com

IT”S TIME FOR THE BIG SHOW in LONG BEACH!

It’s the Fred Hall Fishing and Boating Show in it’s 71st year and will take place at the Long Beach Convention Center in Long Beach CA from Wednesday to Sunday. This show is massive!  Anyone who is anyone, especially if you’re a bluewater or freshwater angler…and hunter…or spearfisherman is there!   Great place for the family and so much to see, learn and purchase from boats to gear to guns.  Folks come from all over the country to see this show!  They start lining up hours in advance.

Regretfully, we are also always at the awesome Boise Show at the Boise Fairgrounds in Idaho. We love Boise!!!  Because of the conflicting show schedules this year and last,  Jill  does that show and we were really looking forward to seeing so many of our friends there.  However, this week, we have our first grandchild on the way, and as if writing this, the kid didn’t get the memo and is a tad late.  So, Jilly will stay with our daughter, Jessie in Las Vegas and hopefully our new grandson!  We’ll make it up to you, Boise!  If you want to write to Jill, her e-mail is Jilly@talhunter.com.  Mine is Jonathan@tailhunter.com

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay Fishing Report from Tailhunter Sportfishing for Week of Feb. 12-19, 2017

jerry-siegel-marlin-tags-2-17

Here’s Jerry Siegel from Colorado Springs showing a striped marlin he took early this week while trolling a Rapala in just 40′ of water near Bahia de los Muertos fishing for cabrilla and other rockfish! The fish could not be released and they donated the fish to the local orphanage. Thanks to our amigo, Gary Wagner, owner of Rancho la Costa there in Muertos Bay.  Check out the video below!

STRONG WINDS AND EVEN RAIN MARK THE WEEK

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay Fishing Report for Week of Feb. 12-20, 2017

Not much to report this week.  Earlier in the week it was calm enough to go out although still breezy, but the constant winds have turned alot of the water green and murky with alot of suspended particulate in it. The good side is that this is normal stuff for this time of year and with El Nino, for two years, we didn’t get the cold water in winter.  This meant there were no nutrients for bait which is a big reason why the last two seasons the bait stocks up and down the Sea of Cortez were so minimal.

So, although it didn’t help us this week, in the long run this seems to bode well for the coming fishing season.  I did have someone recently tell me that down in Cabo San Lucas, about 100 miles south of us, they’re seeing more bait than they’ve seen in several years.  So…bring it on!!!

However, back to the present, again not many folks out on the water since this is off-season and mostly snowbirds in town.  Not surprisingly alot of our good amigos from Canada and other chilly places.  Even though it’s windy and cold by our standards, they’re still enjoying the sunshine in the high 70’s!

For the fishing, there were some scattered dorado caught and a few of the nice-grade 20-pound class yellowtail.  Inshore, some small pargo and cabrilla mixed with a few jack crevalle.  I’m surprised that we’re not seeing more sierra.  But, it’s still early.  We did get a surprise marlin (see the video and photo above thanks to Gary Wagner from Rancho Costa) that was hooked while slow trolling a Rapala nearshore in shallow water.  CRAZY!!!

Anyway…

Later in the week the winds kicked up and this past weekend it rained pretty somewhat steadily from time to time. The general rule of thumb is that if it’s storming or windy or raining hard in the Western United States, chances are it’s doing it in Baja… just a bit warmer.  This coming week after the storm passes, it looks like the first part of the week will have some of the strongest winds in quite awhile in double-digit speeds at the backend of the storm.

WHALES AT BAHIA MAGDALENA

20170213_140901

Our Tailhunter amigos for many years, Dale and Deborah Van Dellen spent two days at Bahia Magdalena whale watching with us.

On the upside, our whale watching tours are going full-speed at Bahia Magdalena and folks are really enjoying the numerous whales that have taken up residence for the next few months in the shallow waters there.  We’re running day trips until about mid-March.  Also, right in La Paz Bay, we’ve got quite a few folks swimming with the baby whalesharks and we’re running daily trips weather permitting.  The whales are only a few hundred yards in front of the La Paz Malecon waterfront in about 10 feet of water!

If you’re interested in either tour, contact us at Tailhunter Sportfishing International at:  Jonathan@tailhunter.com

ballena-gris-15

It’s a pretty neat experience!

ballena-gris-16

Yes, they can get pretty close! This one wants to know what’s in the ice chest for lunch! Whales are usually around until about mid-March.

CARNIVAL STARTS THIS WEEK in LA PAZ!  Viva Carnival 2017!

If you’re in La Paz, Carnival starts this Thursday and goes until next Tuesday with massive fiestas, street fairs, festivities and parades.  It’s non-stop party similar to Mardi Gras in other cities.  The best place to watch the parades is right at our Tailhunter Restaurant with 3 stories of restaurant overlooking the waterfront and malecon street below with all the floats and marchers.  Not to mention enjoying some great food and drinks!  Here’s some shots from previous years!

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay Fishing Report from Tailhunter Sportfishing for Week of Feb. 5-12, 2017

cabrilla-steve-green_edited-tags-1

Steve Green from Alaska staying at Rancho Costa in Bahia de los Muertos took a nice big cabrilla with some afternoon fishing dragging a deep diver. Thanks Gary Wagner for the photo.

You can tell it’s a little chilly when folks from Alaska like Mic Ward is wearing long pants and fleecewear! But another nice cabrilla off the rocks while staying at Rancho Costa.

CHILLY AND COLD KEEPS THE FISHING TO INSHORE SPECIES

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay Fishing Report for Week of Feb. 5-12, 2017

The cold and windy conditions returned this past week which was the downside.  The upside is that there weren’t many folks fishing.   But, that’s how it is in the winter off-season.  The fishing that could be had was confined mostly to inshore fishing so we couldn’t follow up on last-week’s yellowtail bite over at the sound end of Cerralvo Island.  Or look for mackerel.

That being said, slow trolling off the rocky areas of Punta Perrico and just outside the point at Bahia de los Muertos using Rapalas.  The areas also produced yellow snapper, jack crevalle and barred pargo.  Just off the drop-off, we also found some bonito.   Encouragingly, we also spotted some rooster fish off the Arenas lighthouse, but the fish weren’t interested and were moving fast.

Looks like there’s going to be a bit more wind this coming week and a chance of rain.  We’ll keep you posted.

WHALES WATCHING SEASON IN FULL SWING

Our yearly whale-watching tours in Bahia Magdalena are in full swing right now.  The whales are here usually until mid-March.  Check out this video sent to us by our Tailhunter Restaurant manager, Gerry Becerra.  Turn up your sound!  Write us directly for more info and we’ll set you up for an incredible time!  Write to me at:  Jonathan@tailhunter.com

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay Fishing Report from Tailhunter Sportfishing for Week of Jan. 28-Feb. 5, 2017

roger-thompson-tags-golden-grouper-2-17-tags

Not just a pretty fish, but a pretty photo! I hope our amigo and ace fisherman, Roger Thompson, frames this photo of his golden grouper. He’s caught a ton of great fish over the years, but this one is especially cool. He was fishing with his favorite Captain Hugo and took this on a…(wait for it)…a trolled Rapala!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Carl Lange and Ken Gragg from Bakersfield visit us 2-3 times a year and are two of our best winter-time fishermen. As Ken told me, “We caught the only two dorado in the bay!” It’s not normal to see warm-water fish like this in the winter.

armando-tuna-2-17-tags

Talk about unusual fish in the winter…TUNA? Our own captain Armando was out with his amigo from La Paz and they tied onto these two 30-pound class yellowfin tuna right off the beach near the old Hotel Las Arenas in shallow water using mackerel and squid.

donna-yellowtail-tags-2-17

Donna Thompson always gets fish and on this particular day, she nailed two nice yellowtail…our first documented yellowtail of the season…off the south end of Cerralvo Island and they lost a few more they couldn’t stop from busting off while  trolling Rapalas with Capt. Hugo.

chuck-chandler-idaho-cabrilla-tags-2-17

Happy smile from Chuck Chandler of Idaho with a nice fat cabrilla! Great eating.

Our friend Gary Wagner who owns the Rancho Costa Hotel and the famous Giggling Marlin Bar in Cabo with a nice cabrilla and Ken Ward from Alaska sort of photo-bombing with a sierra over Gary’s head.

It was a great week to pull big fish out’ve the rocks! Steve Green from Idaho with another fat cabrilla.

Not an usual combination this week! Ken Gragg with the cabrilla and Carl Lange with a sierra and their favorite Captain Pancho.

Jack got into the big yellowtail as well. You can see the deep-running Rapala sticking out’ve the fish’s mouth. He was working that area at the south end of Cerralvo Island just across from where he was staying in La Ventana.

Here we come, Oregon! We’ve done 3 weeks of shows now…Denver…Sacramento…and Seattle and we’re doing great with reservations! The Tailhunter Tour now takes us to the largest show in the Pacific Northwest. From Wednesday to Sunday, we’ll be at the Portland Expo Center. More info below! Come see us and let’s talk about fishing in La Paz!

WHAT A DIFFERENCE WHEN THE WIND GIVES US A BREAK!

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay Fishing Report for Week of Jan. 28-Feb. 5, 2017

What a difference a week makes!  Whereas the past few weeks we had the regularly season strong winds that really stirred things up and made most days unmissable, this past week we had some of the nicest weather in quite a while.  It was still on the cool side (our staff used the word “COLD!”), but it’s all relative, right?  It still usually required fishing with jackets and sweatshirts.  But, having some flat water and lower winds made all the difference.

It wasn’t wide open or crazy fishing by any stretch, but generally speaking, at least we caught fish and there were some real surprises.  In addition to the usual cold-water fish we catch this time of year that included inshore species like cabrilla, snapper, sierra, bonito and cargo, we also saw some of the quality fish like yellowtail as well as dorado and tuna.

The yellowtail aren’t a real surprise, although maybe they are a tad early.  It’s great news because these are the first yellowtail we’re seeing.  But, the real surprise was also having warm-water species like dorado and tuna also in the same areas!   Those are the kind of species we might see in May or June mixed together.   Again, nothing spectacular in the bite, but still really a bonus to go out on the water and get species like these!

One of the best spots was at the south end of Cerralvo Island.  We found some mackerel in the area which is great candy-bait for these fish but also trolling deep-running crank baits like the Rapala 15’s and 30’s worked some of these big fish up.

Hopefully the winds stay down, but generally the windy months continue until March.   We’ll keep you posted!

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay Fishing Report from Tailhunter Sportfishing for Week of Jan. 22-29, 2017

Turn up the sound!  This is some incredible video of what it can be like trying to fish right now.  This is normally calm-flat Bahia de Los Muertos.  Folks get sometimes upset and disappointed when I try to tell them why this is off-season for fishing.

Cold and Windy Days Mark the Week

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay Fishing Report for Week of Jan. 22-29, 2017

I guess I could fib a bit and finally say fishing was great and conditions are great, but that wouldn’t be true and definitely not do anyone any good.  I’d rather be up-front.  It was cold.  It was windy.  There were waves.  Even locals hunkered down a bit.

But, I keep getting asked why, it’s like this and why the fishing reports sound repetitive.  It’s like this because IT’S WINTER!  It’s ALWAYS like this in winter.  It’s windy.  It’s cold.  That’s why it’s called W-I-N-T-E-R.  From December to about March or so, this is how it can be.  It’s not like winter in say, Canada or Montana or anywhere like that, but relatively speaking, we think it’s kinda chilly when it’s in the high 60’s in the day and down to 50 at night.  That’s kinda chilly for those of us south of the border.  To our snowbirds that are in town, that are visiting from Massachusetts or Colorado, it’s wonderful and sunny.   It beats being in the snow, right?

However, not so good being on the water.

Anyway, despite the less than stellar conditions, we did have some folks who wanted to brave the elements.  I was surprised by how well they did.  In addition to bonito, some huge yellowtail jacks (not THE yellowtail), smaller pargo, snapper and even some small dorado, we almost had two marlin baited.  All of these were pretty much close to shore since we couldn’t get too far out anyway.  But, given the weather situation and the time of year, I’m surprised we’ve got marlin and dorado around. But that’s encouraging.

The weather forecast looks to be improving for the coming week, but normally, this is gonna be like this off-and-on until about March or April.

WHALEWATCHING SEASON ROCKING IT!

Our annual whale watching season is in full swing and we’re making daily trips out to Bahia Magdalena at Lopez Mateos where the whales migrate to and hang out every year from January to March.  It’s a great family outing to visit the whales in the shallow warm waters for the bay.  Contact me directly for more info and how we can set you up.  Jonathan@tailhunter.com

MOSTLY INSHORE FISH and WIND to START THE YEAR

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay Fishing Report for Week of Jan. 2-9, 2017

Not much to tell this week.  I think the town and visitors were still in “holiday hangover” from Christmas and New Years.  Normally, this time of year, the folks who come fishing are walk-in clients off the street.   Instead of being anglers who book months in advance who come for a “fishing trip,” these are visitors to town or snowbirds who’d just like a day of fishing.

However, it’s windy this time of year so either we’re up-front and tell them it can be rough and bumpy or the day they want will be so bad, we don’t recommend going out at all.  Or, in some cases, they look out at the bay and see all the white-caps they decide to just soak up the 80 degree sun on the beach with a margarita instead.  Nothing wrong with that scenario either!

img_3083

So, just not many folks out fishing.

HERE WE COME DENVER!

We only had about 2 days this past week that were fishable.  Inshore is where most of the action was found with cabrilla (sea bass), snapper, barred pargo and jack crevalle.  All fun action especially on lighter tackle, but a few of the larger pargo broke off in the rocks even on the heavier gear.  Offshore, a few wahoo bit and were lost, but a few of the commercial fishermen landed a couple and also some tuna were hooked.  We’ll keep an eye on that.  Pretty unusual to see blue-water species like that this time of year!

wp_20160214_004-1

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay Fishing Report from Tailhunter Sportfishing for Week of Nov. 6-13, 2016

VIDEO EXPRESS WEEKLY REPORT

WEEK AT A GLANCE

Weather – Pleasantly sunny, but cooling off.  Days high 80’s.  Nights high 60’s  (We’re using blankets at night!)

Water – Relatively still warm in the 80’s, but losing visibility as winds starting to churn up the water a bit

Wind – Becoming more of an issue and now getting more northerns.  Had to suggest some folks wait a few days to fish because it was too rough outside and gusts blowing double digits.

Fishing Quantity – Lots of dorado if you fished with our La Paz Fleet.  Only 1-2 fish per panga at Las Arenas, but they could be 20-50 pounders.

Fishing Quality – The La Paz dorado continue to be dinks…5-10 pounds.  The larger wahoo this week were 40-pound class.

Jonathan’s Forecast – Gonna get windier and cooler as we head towards winter.  Not hardly anyone on the water anymore.

Jonathan’s Attitude – Grateful and blessed  to have reached pretty much the end of our 21st season here.  Another year of great memories and so many smiles with all our Tailhunter Tribe.

FULL MOON WAHOO PACE CHANGING BITE & CONDITIONS

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay Fishing Report for Week of Nov. 6-13, 2016

Fishing conditions and seasons are definitely changing.

With each passing week, it’s a little cooler…a little breezier…the sun is going down earlier…the shadows are getting longer.   But, it’s still a great time to be here with lots of sunshine mixed with an occasional passing localized  pleasant afternoon shower.  Temperatures have been in the high 80’s and evenings have been great an in the high 60’s.  Fewer fishermen are here.  Fewer families are here as well now that we’re approaching the holiday season.  However, there’s snowbirds coming for vacations or seasonal residents escaping their colder homes to spend the winter here in La Paz.

As for fishing, once again, it seems that the closer we get to the full moon…and during the full moon…the better the fishing.   As I mentioned, there’s not many  anglers out on the water so you almost have the whole ocean to yourself and, although we’re seeing more and more cooler water fish like sierras, cabrilla, jack crevalle, pargo and rainbow runner, there’s still some great blue water pelagic fishing to be done.  And, as I said, without many folks here, you’ve got the fishing grounds pretty much to yourself and not much pressure on the fish!

For our Tailhunter La Paz Fleet, as it has been been pretty much all season, the schoolie-sized dorado are still the main catch. They’re smallish, but fun and provide lots of action.  Catch-and-release has been very common because you can hook way over your limit in short order.  Anglers get enough for their limits and coolers or for dinner and then keep fishing just for fun and letting the extra fish go.

Most of the dorado continue to be 5-10 pounds, but occasionally, there’s a 15 or 20 pounder makes it in.  Often, there’s so many “squirts” they don’t give the bigger fish a chance to grab the bait!  In those same areas, there’s still some marlin and sailfish feeding as well providing the occasional hookups.

For our Tailhunter Las Arenas Fleet out’ve Muertos Bay, I was really surprised that we are still getting so many wahoo!  In fact, almost every day, our pangas were hooking 1-5 wahoo each.  Of course, that’s a generalization.  It changed from day-to-day.  Howver…  Maybe getting 1 or 2 to the panga, but these are quality 20-40 pound fish!  Great fun and great eating.  Experienced anglers are getting even better scores.

One thing…we’ve been seeing wahoo almost all year.  Now that we’re at the end of the year, I think the wahoo have gotten a little more clever.  We’re sure losing alot more fish than before…even for our veteran anglers.  I think the wahoo have learned to hit the trolled Rapalas from the side thereby cutting the lines.  Rods go bendo then ZIP!!!  Just like that, the lure is gone in a snap.

As well, there’s still flurries of 20-30 pound yellowfin tuna hanging out as well and willing to eat the chunked squid drifted down on a bare hook in the current.

No real roosterfish to speak of this week, but not really anyone chasing roosterfish this time of year. But it doesn’t mean they aren’t still out there.  It’s just the wahoo and tuna have gotten (understandably) most of the focus.

But, with the cooling conditions, we’re seeing alot more variety.  A little more of this and that and more inshore species.  For sure, winds have become more and more of an issue and there were several days this week that we recommended that the clients stay in and wait a day or two before going out on the water.

It’s going to be coming more common as the north winds increase.

All the way from Alaska, Lonn and Emma Goldbeck brought down school supplies and toothbrushes along with some great smiles. Lonn is a guide for Hellbent Sportfishing in Alaska. Emma is a school teacher.

End of the season big shout out to EVERYONE all year who brought down so many good and great things for our families and kids in the barrio and the orphanage as well as the women’s shelter.  Grateful beyond words at what a difference you made in other’s lives and the smiles you all created.  I’m sorry that I also didn’t get Brandon and Tanya McGarr’s photo for this week’s donations!

…and one more big thank you from us

gracias

Well…eleven months later, it looks like we’ve come to the end of another season here in La Paz.  If anyone is counting, I believe that wraps up 21-years!  Jill has already left for the states and I’ll be following in a few days to start getting ready to hit the road on our annual tour of the fishing and hunting shows from late December to the end of March.

We have alot to do now to get the booth together…print out a zillion t-shirts…and brand new 24-page brochure…re-build a new website and find all our winter clothes in storage!  I’ll post up all the cities we’ll be visiting in a report in a few weeks.  I believe we hit 14 cities in 2017 so I hope we see you there!

But before we pull the curtain down, a few parting words…

You can still come to fish. Our awesome staff will take good care of you in our absence.

The Tailhunter Restaurant is ALWAY open and the margaritas and tacos will still be waiting for you along with our great Tailhunter Team so don’t be shy!

Finally, NOTHING happens without you and because of YOU!  We are blessed to do what we do and honored that you share your special vacations and Kodak moments with us.  We are beyond grateful.   How many jobs can claim that “most of our clients also become our friends?”  Thank you all.  God bless and best fishes!

That’s our story!
