Our amigo, Raul Chollet, here in La Paz just recently started fishing only about 2 years ago and has the “fishing bug” big time! He’s since gotten his first marlin, roosterfish, sierra and here, his biggest dorado. It was a slow day but they got a few and this nice dorado with our Tailhunter La Paz fleet. That day, some boats did OK and others, like Raul’s , had a bit more trouble locating the bite.

Jeanette Carroll from New Mexico with Captain Victor just south of Bahia de Los Muertos caught and released this hefty 40-45 pound roosterfish on a live bait. It was her biggest and “bigger than my husband’s rooster!”

Phil Matteson was on his 2nd trip to La Paz this week and told me they had winter in Montana that was 40 degrees below zero! Weather was’t so great in La Paz this week either as we got clouds and wind, but at least it was a tad warmer than Montana. First day out, Phil nailed this big boy bull dorado with our Tailhunter La Paz fleet.

John Kennedy, our amigo from Auburn CA, had to postpone his yearly trip earlier in the year for an injury, but came roaring back with a great week of fishing topped off his last day with this nice sailfish caught and released, as well as a box of dorado, pargo, cabrilla and triggerfish releasing many.

Dick Carroll and his wife came to visit us again this year from New Mexico and couldn’t have been a more fun couple. Both of them got roosterfish with our Las Arenas fleet on the same day including this one that Dick quickly released.

Mark Martis from Redondo Beach CA has been fishing with us at Tailhunter since the early days in the mid-90’s. Under grey skies he still put the wood to this nice big bull dorado near Espirto Santo Island.

Air Dorado taking off! Great shot taken by Phil Matteson of a 40-pound bull dorado ripping off line and grabbing air. As anyone knows who has tried to take one of these shots, it’s a difficult shot to take. The dorado are moving up to 30 mph!

Happy Gal! Becky Munos from Arizona on her first day fishing and first time to La Paz just could not get enough of the fishing and beaches of La Paz. Fishing just off the beach at La Ventana, she put this nice little bull in the box. They released or donated all the the fish they caught!

Josh Matteson on his first time ever salt water fishing is from Cascade, Montana. His first cast, he nails a 40 pound dorado….among others. The next day he battles this nice striped marlin and released it after taking this great photo with Captain Pancho. They were fishing with our Tailhunter Las Arenas fleet.

He’s just about to “heave-ho” this roostefish over the side to release it, but a good fish just-the-same, for amigo Jack Young from Arizona on his first trip with Tailhunters. He had a good week of fishing with both our La Paz and Las Arenas fleet. The roosterfish was caught his first day just off El Sargento.

Wayne Moss, has been my Canadian amigo for many many years and is a commercial pilot in the Maldive Islands. He’s also one of the better fishermen I know. I love the look on his face here wondering if this big bull dorado is gonna make one more attempt to get back in the water! Great colors. Nice fish!

DIFFICULT WEEK STILL HAD SOME GOOD HIGHLIGHTS

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of July 14-20

It was a hard week to put my finger on. With the exception of flyfishermen, everyone got fish, but where you fished and how you fished made a huge difference. If you took our advice and did what we or the captains told you to do, you got fish and there were some nice ones to be had! Overall, I would have to say this week was slower. Last week we had the huge full moon and fishing was much better. Last week we had rainy weather and fishing was better. This week the moon was better and the weather was generally better and fishing was a bit more complicated.

Here’s the breakdown:

LAS ARENAS

The week started OK. We got some roosters. There were small to medium dorado around. There were some billfish, pargo and cabrilla. Not spectacular fishing, but it was OK. We even had bait. But, as the week went on, we had some of the worst fishing we’ve seen all season with our Las Arenas fleet.

On the surface, I could say it was the lack of baits. That includes ballyhoo, sardines and mackerel that we usually use for most of the gamefish. But, the sabalo…the big ladyfish…that we use for the bigger roosters also got hard to find. So, naturally, lack of bait had something to do with it.

Likewise, later in the week we had some tropical storm cells pass through. This made for some rougher and windier waters. It got choppy. The skies were gray. There were little flurries of rain here and there locally. We almost had another water spout form up one afternoon near Cerralvo Island prompting the panga fleets to head for the beach.

So, all that would have or could have affected fishing. I’ve seen similar situations where we had all those conditions and we still got fish.

But beyond that, there were some other variables as well which, contributed to the lack of scores on the fish.

Later in the week we had folks specifically going for “home run” fish. Those are fish that you either get ‘em…or you don’t. Instead of going for “action” they went for the top-shelf bad boys. They are trophy fish for a reason. For instance, going for wahoo. You either get-em..or you don’t. You can be the king of, if nothing is there, then you have a good shot of not coming back with any fish at all because you have to concentrate on the wahoo.

Same for the rooster fish. First, you have to spend the time trying to catch the better live bait…mullet or ladyfish. That can take time. If the baits aren’t there or are hard to come by…that’s a whole lot of time spent. Then, actually chasing the roosters takes time as well. Again, there’s alot of focus and energy on them. If they aren’t there or not biting, then you stand a good chance of getting goose-egged. That’s what happened quite often towards the end of the week.

Frustrated anglers who came back with nothing. But that’s what happens when you swing for the fences! I applaud the effort. It’s awesome. I like that kind of fishing myself. But, sometimes the big hitters strike out. Part of fishing. Part of the game. You have to be ready for disappointment. And there were some disappointed anglers this week. Who got no fish!

About the flyfishing…Frankly, it’s been tough. I’ve been singing that tune all season.

No one in Baja seems to have bait for chum for the flyfishermen. This El Nino has not been good to the flyfishers. Normally, we have sardines to toss out and get the fish going. The sardines are non-existent.

We have larger baits…caballito and mackerel, but you can’t chum with that.

The flyfishers who have been coming down and willing to be flexible and do some conventional fishing are all getting fish. Everyone is catching fish. The ones who are strictly flyfishing are not doing well. The operators here in La Paz that are strictly flyfishers have had a terrible year because they have no other avenues to catch fish. They are strictly flyfishing. I did have 4 guys who just left this morning that were strictly flyfishing.

I kept offering to switch them to fish with my La Paz fleet where we are catching fish, but they insisted on staying with my Las Arenas fleet where they has been no bait…they caught pretty much zero fish for 3 days and left pretty frustrated and angry with us. They could have switched to bait or at least fished with my La Paz fleet and done quite well…even had a shot on the flyrod, but they were stubborn. I wish I could have gotten them some fish. See below…we did find some roosters. The bonito were huge and would have been awesome on the flyrod. They could have gotten the dorado going on the bait then tossed a flyrod into the boils. These were all good guys and experienced fishermen, but I was as frustrated as them.They left for Loreto where I hear it’s been tough as well, but I hope they do better.

I feel for all the flyfishers I’ve seen here this year…lots of them fishing with our competitors. I meet alot of them at our restaurant and hear the stories. That’s fishing this year. As I said at the beginning…it depends on where you fish and how you fish.

LA PAZ

La Paz, while not as good as last week, was still very productive. There were some slow spots…but everyone got fish every day. Some of our pangas would do really well one day and others not so good, but the next day the panga that did poorly would find fish and the other would have a slower day. But the dorado were very cooperative with fish in the 5-40 pound class and some HUGE 12-15 pound dynamite bonito that put some guys on light tackle on their knees! As well, we had several marlin and sailfish hooked up and either lost or released…even a few rooster fish…plus some nice pargo and cabrilla.

The difference is that we had more live bait…caballitos and mackerel. Still a bit big to chum, but the baits brought the fish to the boat. You could even catch a bonito and then chop it up and use it for chum and then that would bring even more fish to the boat.

The one drawback with the larger caballito and mackerel is that they are well…large! One big mistake is that anglers would think they had a hookup and swing to early. There’s alot of smaller fish out there or larger fish that eat slowly! Swinging too early and the bait would literally get yanked out of the fish’s mouths or resulted in alot of short bites too where the gamefish only bit off the back half of the big bait. We missed alot of fish that way. Some of the more experienced anglers increased their hook-up to catch ratio by tying trailer/ trap hooks onto the main rig so that there would be a second hook dangling at the back-end of the baits.

But, overall, the La Paz fishing took care of everyone and got fish in the boat!

One of the nice thing about having our two fleets is that as Las Arenas fishing got slower or more frustrating, or the weather got more unpredictable, we could offer to have our folks fish with our La Paz fleet and get into the fish. That made all the difference between big smiles or frowns!

WEATHER

Normally, this time of year, there’s not much to say about the weather. The sun comes up. The sun goes down. It’s hot and sunny. End of story.

However, this year, with El Nino, we’re seeing alot of variations. Not only is the water warmer, but the tropical humidity and conditions are tangible. The air is generally heavier and muggier. We’re seeing afternoon tropical rain showers come through and sometimes drop considerable rain for a few minutes then move on and the ground steams dry. We see electrical heat storms and lightning in the afternoons, evening and early morning hours when it’s still dark. This is more like September and October weather. Other days, there’s no rain, but it’s cloudy most days. Almost like the “June gloom” seen along Southern California beaches where a marine layer moves in and everything is grey until the sun burns through in the afternoons. Crazy. That being said, it’s still 95-100 degrees every day with cooler evenings in the 70’s.

This is the “OH NO” moment when your reel is screeching…your arms are aching…your rod is bent when you see the big monster 45-pound dorado and you realize you only have 30-pound equipment! Becky Csutoras took this great shot of her dad’s fish as it made that big jump. Yes, he did get the fish. See the tired angler below…he fought it for 45 minutes!

Don White always does well. He was just off Punta Perico with Captain Pancho when he tied into this baby blue marlin. Happily released! Check out the video below of the unceremonious, but successful release. The marlin was not complaining. Congrats to our amigo, Don, who visits from Oregeon each year!

Becky Csutoras, is normally travellng all over the country as an accountant, but she takes some time each year to get in some fishing with us at Tailhunters. She has to be one of the happiest fisher people we ever see. Every day is a “GREAT DAY!” Check our this fine dorado she caught off Las Arenas! She did well all week!

Start ’em young! Six-year-old Roman, gets a hand from his grandma, Kelly Jimenez, with a nice bull dorado standing on the beach at Bahia de Los Muertos. “Romo” had himself a great time all week helping grandma and grandpa to fish!

John Russell told me, “They fight harder than salmon!” He used to be a salmon fishing guide. Visiting us from Milpitas CA, he put the hurt on this colorful big bull dorado fishing near Espirito Santo Island north of La Paz. Great colors…big fish!

My old classmate from law school, Skip Coomber in the center with friends and family got out for a day even during the ugly cloudy weather and got a few dorado. Skips daughter, Amelia, in the gray t-shirt is with her girlfriends Haleigh and Isabella…all 3 girls on a last hurrah before staring their respective college careers in several weeks!

She never fails to get big fish! Oregon in the house, Debbie White in flat water with another big dorado on her scoreboard! Punta Arenas in the background. Each year, Debbie makes us the best homemade moonshine “Apple Pie” for our Oregon show.

John Gothie had just a few days to spend with us, but made the most of it with a nice wahoo plus some fun dorado while fishing with Captain Adolfo and our Tailhunter Las Arenas fleet.

Another youngster headed to college for the first time…Brian Russell will be headed to Arizona State in just a few weeks, but got his first striped marlin here with our Tailhunter Las Arenas fleet.

TROPICAL STORM DROPS SOME RAIN AND DAMPENS FISHING

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of June 30-July 6, 2014

Rain cells moving through the area and bringing a mix of some thundershowers, drizzle, wave surge and winds marred some of the fishing. Fortunately, it wasn’t a hurricane, but just some tropical storms. In most cases, the rain didn’t get anyone wet until the afternoons when the fishermen were already back and it really cooled things off, but it did rob sunshine from vacationers looking for more sunshine than we got this week.

It was very tropical. It could rain for 5 minutes or two hours. It could rain on one spot but then 200 yards away, it would be bone dry. An hour later, it would change again. Or not rain at all until the next day.

Again, the most cooperative species were the dorado. Both our Tailhunter Las Arenas fleet and our Tailhunter La Paz fleet had some good results that differed from day-to-day and boat-to-boat.

LAS ARENAS

At Las Arenas, there was again, no shortage of little firecracker 3-10 pound dorado. Some days, all you wanted. There were some billfish hooked and we did get a few wahoo and pargo. The big roosterfish are still around, but most of the focus has been on the bluewater species.

The week started OK, but then the skies would darken and each day, the winds and waters got a little rougher as we got the tail end of the storm and the periphery of the rain. At least, there wasn’t alot of wind, but it still wasn’t real comfortable towards the end of the week. We actually, had most of our fishermen move over to fish with our La Paz fleet where the fish were at least a big larger.

LA PAZ

For our Tailhunter La Paz fleet, the dorado were a bit bigger and went normally 10-30 pounds and were in areas scattered around Espirito Santo Island and the western side of Cerralvo Island. After the storm clouds moved off, waters went back to calm and flat pretty quickly. We did get some dorado up to the 40-pound class and other large ones lost. Billfish were also in the area with most fish getting released. Decent live caballitos for bait.

Keep an eye out. There’s alot of sealife out. Turtles…manta rays…whale sharks…blue whales were all seen this week! Water’s 85 degrees. Jump in!

According to the forecast, we’re gonna get a little more rain at times at least through next week. But, every day the forecast changes. As of writing this, there’s not a cloud in the sky and it’s brilliant sunshine and now they are saying no rain! Just come fish!

Another week of big big big roosters! Leading the way is Brian Davis with a fish estimated by Captain Pancho as 85-95 pounds and caught on live bait off Las Arenas. This beauty was released…as were all roosters this week. Brian brought a great gang of amigos with most of them from Louisiana.

This i s just a pretty photo! I might just frame it. First-timer, amigo, Boyd Loveless from Utah brings aboard a nice dorado with a hand from Captain Raul. Check out that flat water! Water temps are almost 85 degrees now!

Captain Armando and Kacie Ellis from Portland are all smiles as they get ready to put this big roosterfish back in the water. Kacie is from the Portland area and she was at our Tailhunter Restaurant almost every night to watch her Portland Trailblazers on our TV!

Biggest wahoo of the week and winner of $100 best from his amigos, Eddie Flanigen posted up this nice fish he hooked off the south end of Cerralvo Island on his first day of fishing. Ed is from Louisiana and is holding his fish on the beach at Bahia de Los Muertos.

From Utah, Shirl Loveless just seemed to be the “hot stick” no matter where he fished or who he fished with all week! Check out the bad boy rooster he caught and released with Captain Pancho just a few yards off the sand at Punta Arenas.

SCOTT BEHNKEN pulls in a nice bull dorado! PLAY THE VIDEO ABOVE!

All the way from Indiana, Scott Behnken, pulled this nice bull dorado up north of La Paz. Check out the video in the photo above.

He really wanted to get one and he stuck this trophy roosterfish near Punta Arenas. Mike Ellis from Oregon did a nice job catching-and-releasing this fish!

The three amigos…they are funny as heck when they get together… Joey Stolarczyk, Walt Topping and Ziggy Haspod, found some nice spots of dorado just inside of La Paz Bay and put some nice fish in the box and lost other larger fish!

Great big bull dorado for Shawn Silk from San Mateo CA. Shawn was on his first trip with us and nailed this nice fish north of La Paz just outside of La Paz Bay north of town.

Jeff Jiles looks a bit surprised, but no doubt he’s got a trophy roosterfish with Captain Jorge just south of Bahia de Los Muetos. Jeff came to visit from Utah.

Maybe one of the happiest guys of the week. Great fun to have Felipe Yanez with us fishing all week. He holds up a paid of dorado caught with our Las Arenas fleet.

ROOSTERFISH BEASTS and SUMMERTIME DORADO!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report from Tailhunter International for Week of May 18-25, 2014

It’s actually been one of the hotter and more humid weeks of the year with temps every day just over 100. It’s only May, but if felt like July. Waters were also noticeably warmer as well. But, the good-side of that is much of the green plankton-colored water burned off and we’ve got some pretty blue stuff finally here!

Overall, another up-and-down week. One day our Las Arenas fleet would be top-dog for fish and action. Next day, Las Arenas would be tough and our La Paz fleet would be rocking the fishing. Similarly, two pangas next to each other would be fishing and doing the exact same thing or working the same beach or patch of water. One would hook up left-and-right. The other would have guys scratching their heads wondering if they had unlucky bananas aboard. There was just no predicting from day-to-day or from location to location.

The two biggest stars that came through were our dorado, especially for our La Paz anglers, with fish up to 40 pounds, but so so so many fish lost! It made the counts very deceiving! Our fishermen would come in with some sad stories and only 2 or 3 fish. Then, I would check with our captain and he would say, “But they had lots of opportunities! They LOST 7 fish!” Well…that’s a big difference!

But, then on at least two days this week, our captains and anglers said, “We saw fish everywhere…dorado…roosters…jack crevalle…And they wouldn’t bite! They would swim right by the baits uninterested!”

The best news as again, the rooster fish. The roosters around Las Arenas have been doing really well. Again, we got some real horse-sized pez gallos. Fish were generally 20-50 pounds which are nothing to sneeze at, but we also got some fish in the 60-70 pound class and even one estimated at 80-90 pounds! All fish were released.

We also saw more marlin this week and are hearing stories of tuna moving into our area from the south.

This is the “beast of the week.” With a rooster estimated by Captain Jorge and others as in the “80-85 pound class,” our amigo, Rick Kasper, who has caught lots of big fish with us, shows off his biggest and best with this huge rooster that he caught and released just off the beach at Las Arenas.

Nice way to celebrate a honeymoon! All the way from Argentina, Mauricio Ohashi, nailed this gigantic roosterfish on a live ladyfish near Punta Arenas with an assist from Captain Gerardo who helps hoist the big fish. Mauricio caught and released two of these giants on this particular day.

First timer with us, Felix Williams from Ladera Heights, CA near Los Angeles fished a few days with us and got into a nice jag of dorado one day when the dorado went off outside of Bahia de Los Muertos.

Don Swenson from Washington State really wanted a roostefish and had one day to take a shot at it. He set him up to go out on one of our Tailhunter pangas and they hooked up 6 roosters and got 3 roosters to the panga that were all released. Here’s one of the nice ones!

Scott Behnken is all smiles with Captain Jorge hidden behind the comb of Scott’s biggest roosterfish caught off the beach at Las Arenas. He was using live bait to get the fish. That’s Cerralvo Island in the background.

Ron Lawver from Phoenix AZ hung in there during a tough week of fishing and never ever stopped laughing and smiling. He caught and released this rooster just outside of Bahia de Los Muertos.

He finally got one! From Washington, Todd Olson hefts a big fat roosterfish that’s as thick as it is long! It’s the fish he came to get and it turned out to be a trophy!

Yes…there’s other fish around! Captain Victor poses with a huge pompano, related to roosterfish, jack crevalle, yellowtail and amberjack caught by clients just off the beach at Bahia de los Muertos.

ROOSTERFISH HAVE STRONG SHOWING PICK UP FISHING SLACK

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of May 11-18, 2014

I can’t say fishing is great or even good, but by the same token, I wouldn’t say it’s bad either. It’s just “different.” Quite a few happy anglers but the catch just isn’t what we usually see right now.

I will say one thing, that even with the gigantic full moon this week, it was better than I expected.

If you’re confused…

The rooster fish bit solidly all week and they were some spectacular fish. Every day we got 30-60 pounders and many were lost and happily all of the fish were released swimming away strongly! For many of our folks, it was their first rooster or, their biggest rooster, or in some situations, they weren’t even expecting anything big and, as luck would have it, they tied into some trophy roosters!

As well, we had some better action on dorado with some of the larger fish we’ve seen this early in the season and some legit 25-35 pound bulls taken at both our La Paz and Las Arenas fleet. I will say this. Toward the end of the week water temperatures jumped. The plankton that has been coloring the waters green burned off. Waters turned blue and cleared up in so many places. And with it…the dorado bite surely seemed to get stronger. We’ll keep an eye on it and hopefully this is a sign of continuing better fishing!

On other fronts… wahoo season has been rocking along nicely. Normally, we don’t see many wahoo until about this time of the year, but we’ve had a steady wahoo bite around Cerralvo Island now for 2 or 3 months! There’s some quality 20-50 pound fish out there and other “grandes” that never made it to the boat.

Air temps are in the low 90’s with some Santa Ana style warm breezes blowing. Several days the winds were pretty strong affecting fishing. Water is a bit off color either because of the winds or because of plankton in the water but as mentioned above, clarity and visibilty have improved rapidly . A few more degrees warmer and it’ll all burn off.

Tom Worley cabrilla grande tags smalll 4-14-proc

Not bad for a first time out with us! From Evergreen, Colorado, Tom Worley pulled this trophy pig cabrilla (Mexican seabass) out’ve the rocks near Cerralvo Island. He was working a live bait early in the week.

Many of you know Esteban Romero, one of our favorite amigos and who drives for us. Even he got into the wahoo action with this speedster while trolling a Rapala outside of Bahia de Los Muertos near Cerralvo Island.

Another first-timer with us had an incredible two days of fishing getting and releasing his first roosterfish of about 40 pounds then sticking a wahoo and a dorado for the grand slam. McKell Condie was visiting us from Utah. Oh…and he also jumped in the water to swim with a whaleshark too!

Big smile and a two-handed batch of dorado for everyone’s amigo, Jorge Romero, who also took some time this week to check out the fishing. He got a total of 4 dorado for the day.

Always with a good day of fishing, Taylor Murphey, from Lakewood CA poses with a fresh colorful dorado she took fishing with grandpa Roger Thompson who kindly sent us the photo. That’s the beach near Muertos Bay in the background.

Amigo, Paul Nagata, from San Francisco, usually visits us several times a year and got away this week for a quick few days with his favorite captain Jorge. This particular day, Paul jumped all over the dorado, but the previous day he hooked a massive wahoo that straightened the hook near the south-end of Cerralvo Island.

These two guys cracked me up! Left is Bob Martz and on the right is Jordan McMasters from Victoria, Canada. They show off a few of their dorado on the beach, but Jordan also caught and released a 50 pound roosterfish.

From Mexico City, Carlos Westerman was able to get out one day with us at La Arenas and our Captain Archangel. The action wasn’t great, but he made the most of it and took this nice-sized wahoo and dorado.

FRUSTRATING FISHING BUT SOME NICE HIGHLIGHTS ON A TOUGH WEEK

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of April 27-May 4, 2014

It was somewhat of a frustrating week of fishing. It started well. It ended fairly well. But in between, it was a bit rugged.

We had some promise going into the week but then strong winds and some really high tidal surges and waves seemed to have not only stirred up the waters, but also chased away the bits of live bait spots we had as well as brought up cooler waters and some rougher waves. Not exactly the best conditions or situations for fishing. Just being honest.

There were some highlights, however. What we lacked in quantity and action we tended to make up for it in some nice quality fishing. There were some good-sized rooster fish taken that ran 30-60 pounds and some larger ones broken off. All of them released.

There were also some larger dorado in the area as well that helped out as well. Some of the pangas got limits or near limits some days. Not everyone, but several boats a day would do well. It just depended on the the spot as well as the luck and skill of the anglers.

But, truth be told, there were days this week when boats came back with nothing…either because of simple bad luck or losing fish or choosing to chase a fish that was “hot”one day, but cooled off the next. I especially felt badly for a pair of flyfishing anglers we had that fished hard and hardcore like troopers for the entire week and pretty much came up goose-egged. It wasn’t a good week for flyfishing…and tough for the conventional fishing as well. Despite some nice catches, it might have been one of the more frustrating weeks of the young season.

The highlight would had to have been the wahoo that went on the bite again. Every day, we took a few and lost even more to the speedy toothy fish. But, for many of our anglers, it was their first wahoo with some decent 20-35 pound ‘hoos brought into the boat. South end of Cerralvo Island was our hot spot trolling Rapala and YoZuri lures.

We got into some wahoo this week and we’re not surprised that young Taylor Murphy fishing with grandpa Roger Thompson got one of them. She always does well. A purple Rapala off the south end of Cerralvo Island did the trick.

Birthday girl! Karyn Jennings was fishing with her husband Greg and had a good birthday week with us in La Paz. Here she shows off a day’s catch with a great mix of dorado, cabrilla and wahoo fishing with our Tailhunter Las Arenas fleet. A good bunch of fillets was cooked up at our Tailhunter Restaurant! Karyn is from Colorado.

First timer, Steve Bradley who lives in Northern California on the Smith River was out with Tailhunter Captain Pancho and got his first dorado just outside of Bahia de Los Muertos. He also got his first rooster, a 30 pounder that was released and lost a larger fish as well.

John Nagy from Marina del Ray CA slips quietly in and out’ve La Paz and just nails the fish! I think he got our largest wahoo of the week with this 4- pounder off the south side of Cerralvo Island on a blue and white Rapala. He was fisihing with our Tailhunter driver, Esteban and they also got one other wahoo, 2 pargo, and released a marlin. Nicely done!

Yup…still a few lingering yellowtail around in the cooler water. Jenny celebrates with Captain Raul from our Tailhunter La Paz fleet and shows off this big slugger forktail caught near Espirito Santo Island. Jenny is from Colorado.

Captain Victor “El Jefe” from our Tailhunter Las Arenas fleet poses with first-timer, Ron Kling from Byers, Colorado who came down to catch his first roosterfish. On this particular day, he got 5 roosters between 40 and 50 pounds which he released! And he kept this nice dorado for dinner!

FISHING SLOWLY GETS BETTER WITH WARMER TEMPS

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of April 20-27, 2014

There were good and there were bad things about this past week of fishing. Let’s start with the bad.

There were some really windy days. Some cooler water temps. But those things are to be expected this time of year when things are in transition between the warm and colder seasons. Still, it didn’t always make for the best fishing conditions nor, did it help with getting bait. Basically, it’s almost like a chart…the higher the wind, the poorer the fishing. The lower the wind, the better the fishing. Overall, I’d give this week a so-so rating in terms of fishing. It’s been worse. But, normally, it’s a whole lot better.

But, let’s focus on some of the positives.

Take a look at some of this week’s photos. Yup…wahoo made a nice surprising reappearance this week. Around the north and sound end of Cerralvo Island, the speedy skinnies were around and willing to eat slow trolled Rapalas and bait. Sizes ranged from pinky 15 pounders up to about 40 pounds.

Additionally, we had a really great week on the roosters for our Las Arenas anglers. I think just about everyone who really wanted to check “rooster fish” off the bucket list got at least one. I don’t have any photos this week because, with much appreciation, all the roosters were released! But, there were some nice quality fish taken off the sandy beach areas with fish in the 20-45 pound size and some larger that were lost.

To the good stuff, add in a few marlin coming alive and taking some hits, but all of them coming off plus the dorado were still around although not in big numbers as previous weeks. I still consider the dorado to be our bread-and-butter fish at the moment. Both our Las Arenas and La Paz fleet had dorado as their predominant go-to fish. Some decent 20 pounders in the mix, but some larger fish lost to pilot error!

Hope the winds slow down and the bait gets better! Should all improve as we move closer to summer!

That’s a big sierra! Great eating and feisty on light tackle, Cindy holds up a trophy sierra she nailed trolling Cerralvo Island with the purple rapala you see in the photo. Cousins to the wahoo, these guys make super ceviche! (Thanks for the photo, Hawk!)

Dorado were the mainstay for our anglers this week as waters up to 80 degrees have moved into our fishing holes bringing the warm water species as well. This female was hooked just outside of Bahia de Los Muertos and released, but we’ve been getting some bulls up to 20-25 pounds.

WARM WATER SPECIES AGAIN TOP CATCHES

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of March 16-23, 2014

Unless something dramatic happens, which might not be good, I would venture to say that cold-water fishing is pretty much done for the year. Given the patterns and catches all winter, our chilly-water season has come and gone…what there was of it!

Whether that’s good or bad depends on how you look at it. For fishermen coming in the spring to chase yellowtail, I think they might be disappointed. There’s still yellowtail around, but certainly not in the numbers we’re used to seeing this year. Our divers say there’s a colder water thermocline down deep that seems to be where the fish are holding. But, the warmer waters on the surface…up 78 degrees around Cerralvo and into the 80’s on the outer banks! There are still some other species around that are great fun like the spawning pargo and reef-bound cabrilla, but frankly no one has really been chasing these challenging species, not when there’s top water species around that are easier to catch and less frustrating.

That would be the other way to look at things.

The warm water species have really not left. They’ve slowed a bit, but folks…we’ve been catching dorado since Christmas. We’ve had little jags of wahoo and even tuna throughout the winter and even the occasional marlin. These are all “glamor “ species we don’t see until later in the season…at least late spring or so. The warm waters have kept these fish in the area and that’s what folks have been catching. They’re fun. They’re impressive fighters. They’re great eating. What’s not to like? Captains, as a pragmatic issue, will also follow the path of “least resistance.”

No sense in chasing bottom fish like pargo or amberjack that will bite, but will frustrate the anglers and possibly send them home with empty fish boxes when dorado are swimming around and make for fast action and great fun and Kodak moments on the beach. Same with cabrilla which are tasty and small…3-5 pounds…then there’s 20 pound dorado swimming around. Yes…20 pound dorado…and some larger!

This past week our some of our pangas got limits of dorado up to 25 pounds…plus cabrilla…plus a few small roosters…bonito and jack crevalle. Good action. There were some yellowtail caught by commercial guys around Cerralvo Island and north of La Paz, but early in the week there were some huge winds that kept everyone close or not even going out.

At the beginning, I said that a dramatic change might not be good. Given the current warmth of our waters, if something dramatic happens, like a sudden decrease in open temperature and everything got cold, I don’t think that would be a good thing. In our past experience, that might just shock the waters and the fish. The waters would turn green and murky and fish wouldn’t bite. That’s just speculation on my part, but I’d rather have fish biting than possibly none at all! Even if they are dorado and billfish! Nothing wrong with that. And nothing wrong with the ocean either! It’s just another cycle that we go through and this year just happens to be warmer than normal!

Sr. Agustin Olachea, head of the La Paz Hotel Association, came all the way up from La Paz to visit us at the Long Beach Fred Hall show! He does alot to help bring tourism to La Paz and Baja, Sur. Great to have him visit us to see what we do at the shows!

We’re coming back to La Paz! The scene at our booth in Long Beach two weeks ago as Jill and Don Busse and his gang of amigos toast the upcoming fishing trip returning to fish with us in October!

Our Tailhunter 2014 Road Tour started at the end of December and it’s finally coming to an end..sadly! Because we’ve had a blast driving all over the country and visiting so many of our amigos at the west’s largest fishing and hunting shows! We’ve been doing it now for almost 20 years! Our road show started with us driving from San Diego to the Sacramento ISE show….then across to the Denver ISE show…then to the Puyallup Fairgrounds in Washington. Then it was just south to the Portland Expo Center. From there to the fairgrounds in Yakima, Washington.

We then took that long drive from Washington all the way to the Phoenix ISE show at the football stadium. Then back north we went to Boise, Idaho for another great show. Then back south to the Long Beach Fred Hall Fishing and Boating show. Last week we drove to Salt Lake City at the ISE show there in Sandy, Utha. Now, we’re here in San Diego! Finally! What a long fun trip it has been! We rocked!

So, come see us starting Thursday for the Fred Hall Fishing show at the Del Mar Fairgrounds near San Diego. The show goes until Sunday and both Jill and I will be in the booth. Dorado in winter? Yup! Jeff Burnham from Larkspur CO came down to wet some lines with us and stuck this nice bull fishing off Las Arenas. The nice mahi was taken just outside Bahia de Los Muertos!

Nothing wrong with this colorful bull dorado with big smiles and a great catch by our amigo, Larry Cornwall. Hard to believe getting this kind of fish in March!

Yes! There’s wahoo around Cerralvo Island right now, like this pair of speedy skinnies shown off by our Tailhunter Captain Jorge on the beach at Bahia de Los Muertos.

With Tailhunter captain Archangel checking the water for any “followers” as dorado will often do, Dennis McGuffee poses with another sweet mahi while fishing out’ve Bahia de Los Muertos. After this they came inshore and using light tackle played with numerous inshore species.

More like it! This is normally, what we’re catching this time of year…cabrilla (seabass) like this tasty one caught by Jeff Burnham.

We had an incredible time in Salt Lake City! What a party at the International Sportsmens Expo with lots of sign ups for our 2014 La Paz fishing season and great photo ops for Jill and our amigas!

SPRING-LIKE CONDITIONS SET THE SCENE AND THE FISHING…UNTIL THE WEEKEND!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of March 9-16, 2014

As one of our anglers said, “It’s incredible. It’s like fishing in May down here right now!” And that about sums it up. “I come down and expect winter fishing and instead encounter dorado right in the bay!”

He has it pegged about right.

Unseasonably warm water has turned the fishing somewhat on it’s head. Normally, we’re getting yellowtail and sierra and other cool-water fish this time of year and instead we’ve run into a pretty steady jag of dorado up to about 20 pounds…flirted with shots of wahoo several times a week…caught the occasional tuna…and even hooked a few marlin! All fish, we don’t normally see until late spring and even early summer!

As well, there have been some surprising catches of amberjack in the 20-80 pound class to go with cabrilla (sea bass), pargo (snapper), sierra and bonito and the occasional yellowtail as well.

This past week, the highlight were probably the dorado that were free-swimming literally within yards of the beach at times. Some of these fish were respectable quality fish too with some decent bulls in the panga boxes. The fish ranged from Bahia de Los Muertos out to the buoys and around the island. They weren’t highly concentrated and it wasn’t a wide-open bite by any stretch, but the fact that the fish are even here this early and have been since January is remarkable. When we did run into the fish, our anglers were getting 2-4 fish per panga mixed with some of the other species.

But, just like they say in the commercials…”But wait!”

We also took a few wahoo off the island early in the week and some smaller roosterfish are starting to show as well. All good signs! Throw in a few sierra some action on the bonito and there was some OK action this week.

At least until the weekend hit. Mother Nature slammed us back with a reminder that March comes in like a lion and roared in with 30-40 mph winds more characteristic of this time of year! The high winds pretty much shut things down for the weekend. But, it’s going to be like that at times and we’ll just have to keep an eye out for this.

A big “muchas gracias” to Salt Lake City for treating us so well and all our friends who came by to say hi and our new amigos who booked fishing trips to La Paz for 2014 at the International Sportsmans Expo! Our booth was jumping for all 4 days and it was great to see so many of our amigos and make new ones as well. This was our 9th show of the season and now we wrap things up and head south once more to the Fred Hall Fishing show at the San Diego Co. Fairgrounds in Del Mar CA for our 10th and final show!

This is more like it for March fishing! Joe Arata of Pacifica CA strikes the hot pose with a slugger yellowtail he took on the iron off Cerralvo Island. Yellowtail were a bit more predominant this week.

What the heck! Roger Thompson is one of the best anglers we know. He was throwing the iron for yellowtail and said his jig barely hit the water when this big-time marlin smacked into it! On 40-pound test, he battled the big billfish for over an hour! Attempts to release the fish were not successful and the meat was donated. Marlin generally don’t show up for another 3 months or so! Just another indication that we’re going to see more warm water species showing up!

If there’s any question about the waters being warmer than usual, check out this crazy story from John Duteil who was visiting us from Canada:
We went to the beach at Tecolote and wow the fish were literally jumping out of the water. Two dorado came speeding right up to the shore, then started flipping around one made it back out to sea but the other was stuck. Our friend Dennis still eating his lunch walked over and picked him up. (Pics attached) moral of the story if you can catch them this easy on the shore imagine what you can do in a boat!! it is so easy to catch fish in La Paz they are literally jumping out of the water for you to catch!”

Best show of the season? Maybe so! Just finished up the mighty Fred Hall Fishing and Boating Show at the Long Beach Convention Center that went from Wednesday to Sunday! We hear it broke attendance records and the place was packed and the Tailhunter Booth never had a dull moment! Don Busse (far right) brought over his merry group to toast us with Jill leading the saludos at our booth! We saw a zillion friends and booked lots of fishing trips for 2014 to La Paz! Thanks, Long Beach! Thanks to everyone! No onto Salt Lake City!

CAN IT GET STRANGER? WATERS WARM AND BRING TOP WATER SPECIES!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of March 2-9, 2014

So sorry. Impossible to write anything from the show and then I’m up to 3 or 4 a.m. just catching up. It’s after midnight now Sunday. If you can still use it, here’s some info:

The strange week early season continued this past week with more un-characteristic biters all week, but especially early in the week. In what seems like we may have by-passed our cold-water season and got right into spring-like conditions, we continue to hook up with a crazy variety of fish indicative of waters that are unseasonably warm!

We did get a few more big yellowtail this week, but the numbers are way off from what they should be. Normally, this time of the year, we are hammering big 25-40 pound ‘tails and getting 2-5 per panga not counting the ones we lose!

Instead, we are only getting about 3 – 10 per week! That’s it. They are a nice grade of fish, but the counts are not what they should be.

However, don’t panic! The slack is being taken up by other fish including dorado, wahoo…even marlin and we got a tuna (reportedly a 24-pound class yellowfin was taken!) this week as well. All of these are normally warm water species that we don’t see for another 2 months or so!

Mixing that in with some cabrilla and pargo and it’s making for an interesting “chop suey” of fish in the fish box these days. Will it continue?

I have no idea. We seem to get new surprises every week! Two things can happen. The waters will continue to warm in which case, forget the cold water species like the yellowtail an sierra and such. They’ll go deep or leave the area far too early!

Secondarily, they water will suddenly get cool and cold and we’ll lose the warm water species and by then it might also be too drastic of a change for the inshore species.

I tend to think the waters will continue to warm so look out…it’s going to be a season of early big fish!

We’ll keep you posted for sure.

LONG BEACH ROCKED! NOW HEADED TO SALT LAKE ISE SHOW!

Our booth in Long Beach was visited by so many super amigos but we never expected so many dignitaries from La Paz to come up as well including our amigo Agustin Olachea, head of the La Paz hotel association! It was great to see him at the show helping to promote tourism in our city!

We had an incredible run this past week at the Fred Hall Fishing and Boating Show at the Long Beach Convention Center. What a slamming good time seeing so many of our S. Cal friends and so many of our amigos in the fishing industry. It was often shoulder-to-shoulder in the aisles and the din of the crowd was so raucous that we had to yell to be heard! Couldn’t have been more fun and I also got to celebrate my birthday in the middle of about 10,000 of my best friends like I do every year! Thanks to everyone who came by to chat about fishing in La Paz and also wish me another good “trip around the sun!” It was a grand time!

But now…

Here we come Salt Lake City! Two more shows to go and Salt Lake it ALWAYS fun! We’ll be at the Expo Center in Sandy, Utah to be specific in that fine facility from Thursday to Sunday. Yes! It’s February and we’re catching dorado! Normally, warm water fish, apparently, no one told the dorado as we keep running into them like this nice bull taken by our Washington amiga Carol Darby with Captain Gerardo.

Another surprise this week! Wahoo once again showed up near Cerralvo Island like this speedy ‘hoo with Captain Archangel.

Apparently, this is turning into one of the best whale-watching seasons in recent years! The whales are solid at Lopez Mateos at Bahia Magdalena and we’re running daily trips out to see them! Contact us for a trip of a lifetime getting close to these magnificent animals!

STRANGE MIX OF FISH AGAIN SURPRISE ANGLERS

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Feb. 16-23, 2014

Generally, not a bad week of fishing for our anglers, but again, just like the last few weeks, some unusual catches. It’s almost getting to be an old record but the catches just don’t seem to make sense!

This is winter and catches are generally inshore and consist of inshore COLD water species. Well, the bite has certainly been inshore, but the CATCH has been rather unusual. For the past few weeks, and again this week, we caught dorado! Dorado are warm water fish. We catch them in the summer and fall when the waters are warm.

What else is unusual is that the fish were mostly caught pretty close to shore…while fishing for WINTER fish like the cabrilla (sea bass) and sierra and species like that. We did indeed catch the sea bass, sierra, pargo and jack crevalle. But in the middle of that, it’s pretty surprising to also get dorado.

Likewise, also got a few wahoo as well. So, go figure. Again, the wahoo are usually trophy fish that we pursue in the warmer months! The wahoo ware taken off the north and south end of Cerralvo Island. We’ll just have to keep following this.

All week, we’ve got a full week of fishermen so we’ll have a better idea of what’s going on with the bite. Hopefully, find more pargo and yellowtail too!

Jill and I have been on the road now for 2 months and had some incredible shows in Sacramento, Denver, Puyallup (Seattle), Portland, Yakima and just finished one of our best shows ever in Phoenix at the University of Phoenix Stadium. Thanks to all our amigos who stopped by and everyone who came by to talk to us about fishing with us this year in La Paz. We now move to our 6th show in Boise, Idaho at the Idaho Sportsman Show at the Boise Fairgrounds. This is a great show and we’ll be there from Thursday to Sunday! Here’s some additional info.
