OUR NEW TAILHUNTER “EXPRESS” VIDEO REPORT – Take a look!

Hector Chacon from Arcadia CA has been coming to fish in La Paz with Tailhunter Sportfishing for over a decade. This week he got his largest fish ever, this huge amberjack near Espirito Santo Island that took a live bait. Hector battled the fish for over 45 minutes on lighter tackle to get it to the panga.

From Long Beach CA, Kennedy Nixon from Long Beach CA had only one day to fish in La Paz and made the most of it while fishing with the Tailhunter Fleet from Bahia de los Muertos and hooked and landed this huge dog-tooth snapper also called a “pargo perro” or “cubera snapper.”

This young man had quite a week. Tommy Newman from Illinois is just 11-years-old. He’s got several photos in this week’s fishing report. First day out, he put this big yellowtail in the boat all by himself off Espirito Santo Island.

Rich Pope loves to fish. Just off the “fruit loop” housing complex at Punta Perrico near the end of his first day of fishing, he latched onto this nice roosterfish that he released. Just below this photo is underwater video of rich with his fish and Captain Gerardo.

School-teacher Sam Sybesma heads to La Paz when the school season finishes for some fishing every year! He had never caught a yellowtail which are usually not around because the waters are too warm in the summer. But, look what showed up! Captain Chito gives a thumbs up!

Cheryl Delin was a last minute booking to come fishing with us. She was out with Captain Ramiro and is all smiles with this nice roosterfish she caught ad released. Great photo! She lives in California, but was raised in Japan and told me, “I don’t like to eat fish” so she would have released the fish anyway! Fun fun lady! Nice to have her visit.

Dee Dee Pope is as game as they come! She fishes. She hunts. She rocks! And she definitely rocked this big jack crevalle on light tackle using a mini-Whopper Stopper rod custom built by Ed Robison and coupled with a tiny Avet SX reel and light line. She released the big jack, but check out her video below and the underwater shots. Note how shallow it is and the rocks that bust overyone off when pargo and cabrilla strike!

As nice a young man as you’ll find. Chase Roberts from Washington with Captain Pancho was visiting for the first time and got a striped marlin. It could not be released. He did a nice job trying.

There’s a reason it’s called a “dog-tooth snapper.” Mean and ferocious, the attack out’ve the rocks and it’s rare to get big ones like Eric Delin’s fish here with a hand from wife, Cheryl. On the beach at Muertos Bay, these two are some fun folks.

First trip to visit us, Trevor Madsen, from Utah got the biggest dorado of the week on his very first day. He got some roosterfish also! Great young man!

That’s a lot to try to lift up. But, 11-year-old Tommy Newman does his best on his first marlin with Captain Gerardo early last week. Check out the video below of the fish going off.

Our very own fishing champ and everyone’s favorite Tailhunter van driver, Jorge Romero, finally was able to take some time off and went out with Sam Sybesma and put the wood to a pair of 40-50 pound amberjack near Espirito Santo Island.

A LITTLE BETTER THAN LAST WEEK AS WINDS DIMINISH…FOR NOW! BUT STILL TOUGH FISHING

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay Fishing Report for Week of June 26-July 3, 2016

Happy 4th of July Weekend, everyone! Hope it’s a safe and fun one for you all. We miss being there so eat some fried chicken and potato salad for us and enjoy some fireworks with the family!

Well…

It was a better week than last week when waters were green and the winds blew. This week with the winds diminished, waters started to settle down and blue patches returned and some of the turned-up cold water dissipated. But, I gotta tell you, this is as strange a June as we’ve had. Well, it’s now July, but we should be thick into our warm water fish like dorado, billfish, tuna and other species.

Instead, this is much more like April/ May fishing! Waters are noticeably colder than normal. It’s breezy. The evenings and mornings are actually cool. And the fishing is way different!

We’re not seeing much of any dorado. Our catch has been winter/ springtime species like pargo, cabrilla, snapper, jack crevalle, rooster fish, amberjack and…(this is crazy)…YELLOWTAIL! It’s 4th of July weekend and we’re hooking yellowtail.

They say El Nino is finally done and moving off. After 18 months, a return to “normalcy”…whatever that is…would be pretty nice!

LAS ARENAS

Still our area with the most variety and the most action. It’s not been spectacular by any stretch. The fishing this week was a tad better than last week when it was like a desert out there some days. However, our captains and anglers still had to keep at it and bring their best game to the water. Or sometimes, it was just dumb luck which can be alot better. Hit or miss some days. But there was still action to be had.

The catch has been some nice rooster fish with most of them running hefty 25-60 pounds. Pretty much everything getting released. The biggest issue is getting those big sabalo/ ladyfish baits to use on the big gallos. Some days, it really takes a long time to get them and if you don’t have the bait, it’s gonna be tough to get the big roosters. Also, some days the roosters where there and some days, they just didn’t come to play. Alot of our rookie anglers seemed to do the best on the roosters which was nice to see, but some of our vets who know how to catch the big fish worked hard, but had a hard time.

Besides the roosters, the variety is pretty wide. Like I said, it’s alot like April/ May fishing when you have warm and cold water fish all in the same area. I think the fish are confused too.

We’re getting some big dog-tooth snapper (pargo), big jack crevalle, white bonito, rainbow runners, cabrilla and the marlin and sailfish are getting more active too.

LA PAZ

Fishing north out’ve La Paz towards Espirito Santo Island has been a conundrum even moreso than fishing at Las Arenas. I’ve never seen so many changes.

This past week, yellowtail popped up! In 21 years here, I’ve not seen yellowtail this late in the season. The fish are quality 20-30 pound forkies too! The biggest issue has been our anglers have lost 2-4 fish for everyone they put in the boat. But that’s why I mentioned that you gotta be on your game for alot of these fish. If you lose fish, then yes…it’s gonna be a disappointing day and a big mistake I’m hearing from the captains is some of the lack of experience. You can’t let these big fish “run.” Like the pargo, cabrilla and amberjack that live around structure. There is no place to “run.” It’s not like hooking a marlin, tuna or wahoo in more open water with alot of deep water around you.

Here, the water can be literally only several feet deep so letting these fish run means you’re already behind the 8 ball because they’ll go right back to the rocks and BANG! You’re snapped off .

We’re not seeing the open water dorado we normally encounter this time of year. We’re having to work inshore where these big fish like the amberjack up to 100 pounds…tough yellowtail…toothy pargo and cabrilla will beat you up and spit you out!

When they hit, pull…lift and turn the handle of the reel so you can turn their heads. Once they head down, you’re pretty much lost.

Brothers, Larry McNeal and Gary Whitaker were fishing La Paz waters for the and not 5 minutes after putting lures in the waters, got these two wahoo near Bahia de los Muertos. Larry is from Baker City OR. Brother Gary lives in Lynnwood WA.

Amigo Kip Slaugh from Salt Lake City UT with Captain Pancho and a trophy amberjack on the beach at Bahia de los Muertos. Beast of a fish. There weren’t many small amberjack this week.

Given the tough fishing this week. Kevin Suzikada and his buddy, Jeff, had one of the better 3 days of fishing of anyone catching white bonito, snapper, jack crevalle, big cabrilla, pargo and this big boy amberjack. It was Jeff’s first time ever fishing! They’re from Los Angeles.

He never fails to catch big fish on each trip to La Paz that he’s been making since he was a little kid, Cole Chavira, know how to bend a rod. Check out the big rooster caught north of La Paz and released. Cole is from Cardiff, Ca. Rooster was released.

Another Utah, amigo, Daylon Slaugh, got the biggest dorado of the week, this nice bull. Not many dorado around although June should normally be a great month for them. However, the ones we’re catching are getting larger.

Bill Mitchell from Carmel CA fishes with Tailhunter Sportfishing every year and got his personal best rooster off the rocks in shallow water near Punta Arenas. The big pez gallo was released. The fish looks a little surprised!

It was a good week for big roosters around La Paz, although tough for other species. Dan Gaston from Encinitas CA with a big gallo caught and released near Las Arenas lighthouse. Great photo. Thanks to Mitch Chavira.

Brian McClellan from Park City UT helps wife, Marie, with a big amberjack she caught fishing with Tailhunter Sportfishing just off the rocks near Punta Perrico. She’s a gamer and put this fish in the panga on her own steam!

I had so many photos from the previous week when the fishing was red hot that I screwed up and somehow left off photos of the best catch of the week by Sherman McDonnell from Rock Springs WYO and Jim Wilson from S. Dakota with Captain Pancho and FOUR nice wahoo. Several others were lost. Great day!

Rick Carlton and Bruce Hasson from San Diego caught the only two tuna of the week, a pair of football yellowfin tuna.

Whoa! Glenn Davis, one of our first-timers from San Diego hefts of a huge roosterfish with Captain Jorge. Glenn released the big fish after the photo.

Mike Cain gives Charles Koeleman a hand with another big roosterfish early in the week just off the Perrico rocks. We estimated the fish as 80-100 pounds (according to Captain Victor). A beast! The world record was caught in these waters of 114 pounds! Charles released the fish to his credit!

Another day…another rooster for Matt Lederer photo’d with his dad, Bob who is from Massachusetts. Matt was hot on the roosters and let this one go too!

LUCAS FORRAY cabrilla tags prescott 6-16

From Prescott AZ, this is Lucas Forray with a trophy cabrilla just north of La Paz in the bay.

When a big rooster doesn’t want to have it’s picture taken and you’re doing your best to keep it still so you can take the photo and get it back in the water, it’s a bit of a chore! However, amiga Sue Slaugh from Utah does her best with this thick big rooster!

Under the great mustache is a big smile for Robbie Nixon from Sacramento with his big roosterfish. This one was also let go.

Scott lost two wahoo before finally getting this gem of a fish. He also got a yellowtail on this trip as well.

Bobette Nixon gets in the lineup with a really big jack crevalle, cousin to the rooster and a great fighter. Husband Robbie helps out!

BIG WINDS – FULL MOON CHILL RED HOT BITE

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay Fishing Report for Week of June 19-26, 2016

Last week, I started out by saying “what a difference a week makes.” Well, I’m saying it again.

After such a phenomenal week previously, when the waters blew up with wahoo, roosters and others, fishing really chilled off this past week. Just more of the craziness we’ve had this season. It was tough. It was ugly. Maybe one of the most difficult weeks of the season. And like getting ice water tossed on us given how the week before it was fishing crazy!

Here’s what I think happened…

Last weekend, the winds that normally are done for the year, came up. Strong! On top of that, we had this huge full moon and big tide changes. I think they called it a “strawberry moon” that occurred over the Summer Solstice. Even when it didn’t blow and make things funky during the day, it blew at night.

What this all did is got the cold waters back up from down deep. What this did is turn all the pretty blue water we’ve had green and dirty. As a consequence, the fishing just tanked for the most part. Call it like it is. I’ve never seen it this late in the season. Even the species we did catch are more indicative of what we would catch in the cooler months of late April/ May than end of June bites.

Our captains worked hard. Our anglers worked hard and kept at it and kept grinning. But when Mother Nature is working against you, all you can do is keep at it…especially if it’s fishing.

On the upside, as the week came to a close, some of that green water is starting to come back to blue again and we were seeing more activity from the fish. At least a little bit. If only this wind would stay outta our business for awhile!

LAS ARENAS

Still the area where we’re getting the most activity and species. However, compared to last week when the ocean was simply alive, it was really scratchy fishing. The thing is, the fish were either big…or there was not much else! So, there were some big trophy fish to be caught but if you missed your shot or the big guys didn’t show up, there wasn’t much else. So, a panga would come back with one or two nice fish. And that as it. Or very small fish. There was no “in-between” fun fish. It made for some long days and stretches of not much action.

That being said, we still got into some wahoo that are around a liking the dark-colored Rapalas and Yo-Zuris. If you want to bring anything down, bring down the Rapala XRap 15’s, 20’s and 30’s. Or the Yo-Zuri Magnums. Clients are losing the captains rigs and it costs $30-40 to replace them and the lures have been so hot, the few tackle stores here simple don’t have any more to sell. So, alot of you ask me all the time what to bring down, these would be awesome and also clients have been gifting them to the captains as well.

Aside from the wahoo, the amberjack we’re getting have been beasts. Fish in the 30-60 pound class are not uncommon, but they’re tough fish and are boating maybe 1 our’ve every 5 or 6 bites. These are awesome big-boy cousins to the yellowtail and make great eating.

Not much in the way of dorado around which is surprising given it’s summer! That’s normally our bread-and-butter fish. The few we’re catching, however, have been nicer 15-25 pounders.

The fish that keep saving is is the fish that made the area it’s name of “Roosterfish Capital of the World.” Folks come from all over the world to try to get a rooster and especially on some of the days when not much else is happening, catching a 30-80 pound gallo makes for alot of big smiles. But the fish have been monsters and are right there along the rocks and the beaches. The biggest issue is taking the time to catch the ladyfish/ sabalo big-baits that they love. You can’t just snap your fingers and make the bait show up. So, understand that it takes some time some days. Another reason that putting 3 in a panga can be an issue with any kind of bait…you have to get enough bait for 3 guys and what little you have, you burn up pretty quickly.

LA PAZ

Erratic is the best word to describe the fishing straight out’ve the bay. Or anemic!

It’s been like this for about 3 weeks. The colder green waters moved in just about the first week of June and our captains have ventured all over the map finding the better water. Again, we should be into solid dorado right now, but the catch has been that mix of spring-time species when it’s a mix of cold and warm waters:

Dorado from 5-20 pounds (scattered)

Bonito and skipjack

Some rooster fish

Some yellowtail (still!)

Some amberjack

Occasional billfish (stripers up to 120 pounds)

It’s crazy. For our La Paz anglers, there’s bait but no consistent fish. At Las Arenas, there’s fish, but not consistent bait!

One of the nice things that’s unique to Tailhunters is we have both fleets. One in La Paz and the other at Las Arenas so at least we can move folks around between our two fleets depending on the bite, the weather, the species and how that all keeps changing to give folks the best opportunity to get fish even when the conditions aren’t always the best.

The full moon is moving off. Waters are getting bluer. Hopefully, this coming week will be better. Honestly, it was hard to be much worse. It was a tough week.

TAILHUNTER COMMUNITY OUTREACH – GRACIAS!

The Slaughs and McClellan family from Utah with school supplies and, of course, a new Utah Utes flag for the Tailhunter Restaurant!

Jilly with Larry McNeal and Gary Whitaker, two brother from Oregon and Washington respectively who had two full ice chests of kids clothes and hygiene products like toothbrushes, toothpaste, q-tips, deodorants and fem pads, combs and hair products! Wow. I’m sure alot of this will go to the women’s shelter here in town.

Well…maybe some of the donated clothes won’t go to the kids! Maybe an older brother!

They have been our friends for years and two-years in a row shipped down a huge heavy box of clothes and toiletry items for the school kids and the shelter! John and Katie Olson, recently retired from building Disneylands all over the planet are always a welcome set of vistors and dear friends.

Himself a schooteacher from S.Dakota, Jim Wilson and his wife Laura stuffed a bunch of school items into their ice chest for the kids.

You can take the 6-year-old out’ve some little girls, but not others. Jill tries on a cute pink raincoat and holds up some of the school binders that the Chacon family brought down.

Our friends for many many years, the Chacon family stuffed several ice chests full of donations. Many thanks to Fernando, Hector, Richard (dad), Lauren and Izzy! The best.

Leave it to the school teacher to know what to bring…Sam Sybesma from Orange Co, California, his wife, Kelly and their boys brough down sports balls and packs of boys socks underwear and other much needed things.

We can’t say thank you enough to everyone of our Tailhunter friends who bring us things in their suitcases and ice chests to donate to our Tailhunter Outreach program to help some of our outlying under-served schools as well as the woman’s shelter. You have no idea how even the smallest things make such a big difference. Above are just some of the examples of what we rec’d just this week and every two weeks or so, we send another few hundred pounds of supplies to some very needy kids, women and families. Additionally, many thanks to those of you who donate funds to our scholarship program by which $300 keeps a kid in school for a year and is enough to supply the child with books, lunches transportation and clothes. Tailhunter Nation is the best! God bless you all.

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay Fishing Report from Tailhunter Sportfishing for Week of June 12-19, 2016

Captain Jorge from the Tailhunter Fleet was with Jason Lester on his first trip to La Paz with his brother and a bunch of amigos called the Pez Gringos who specifically look to catch rooster fish . Jason did pretty good right out’ve the chute with this monster rooster fish that he released.

This was just one of three days of this kind of fishing for these days and does not include the fish that busted off! Jacob Curtis, Don Vetger and Mike Gonsalves rocked it every single day like this.

Shay and Will House Adolfo tags wahoo 6-16

All the way from Cleveland, Mississippi…and with the great southern accents to prove it…Shay and Will House pose with Captain Adolfo from the Tailhunter Fleet to show off their wahoo, dorado and tuna. She proudly showed me her burned thumb and chaffed wrist from fighting the fish…her first wahoo! What a day.

Dave Lester specifically comes fishing with Tailhunter to catch big roosters and does it every year like this big boy just south of Bahia de los Muertos. Dave is from Los Angeles and the rooster was released.

Jacob Curtis started the day off right. He was still making bait in the bay in shallow water only a few feet deep when they put this big dog-tooth snapper on the hook and boated it! Jacob is from Torrance CA.

Another day…another giant roosterfish for Jason Lester. The fish was released.

A pretty nice birthday for Nicholas Koeleman and his girlfriend Brianna Seca from San Diego. For his 21st, they get two wahoo and there was also a sailfish.

He comes for so many years to get roosterfish, but “missed” this time with a wahoo instead, darnit! My amigo, Ron Burgess, and a rare photo of Captain Archangel smiling.

Mitch Chavira always does pretty good here every year. He was fishing the north end of Cerralvo Island with Peyton Gaston. Both from Encinitas, California. Working the yo-yo iron, they put the hurt on this big yellowtail and amberjack.

Happy Anniversary wahoo for Diego Jimenez who came to fish with Tailhunters in La Paz for his 25th wedding anniversary from Loveland, Colorado. He and his wife come every year, but he and never gotten a wahoo until this big ‘hoo came along. He gets photo help from Captain Jorge of the Tailhunter fleet on the beach at Bahia de los Muertos.

Two days and four wahoo for Norm Fulco and Captain Jorge on the beach at Muertos with our Tailhunter Las Arenas fleet. This was the first of the two days.

It takes three! James Boyd (holding the head) got two of these big wahoo fishing with Captain Gerardo and getting a hand from fishing buddy, Charles Koeleman, from San Diego CA. James was using a purple Rapala on the speedy fish.

From Portland, Oregon, James Damron had never fished in La Paz waters but took this big wahoo fishing with the Tailhunter Fleet and Captain Victor using a purple Rapala off Cerralvo Island.

Jessica Reeve (in the middle) is a pretty tired lady. On light tackle, she battled this striped marlin for 3 hours! Right after this, she tossed in another bait and got slammed by a wahoo…then a shark. Long fun day. She’s helped here by Captain Armando and her mom, Shelley. They’re from Wyoming.

Robby and his wife, Bobette Nixon came down for the first time to La Paz from the Sacramento CA area and he wanted a wahoo and a rooster! He got both! The rooster was released, but he shows off the big wahoo on the beach at Bahia de los Muertos.

Mike Gonsalvez from Torrance CA was fishing with Tailhunters for the first time and got about a dozen species of fish over 3 days including this huge amberjack he caught just outside of Bahia de Los Muertos.

Day two brings two more wahoo for Norm Fulco from Temple City CA and Captain Jorge. Norm had been coming down for many years, but his first time getting wahoo…or this many on a trip. Four in two days is pretty remarkable.

From Cleveland, Mississippi, this is Will House with a fresh wahoo on the panga. He and his wife got two on the day with Captain Adolfo.

I think this has to be the largest rainbow runner I’ve ever seen one of our anglers catch. RR’s are related to yellowtail and make pretty good eating. Jim Wilson from S. Dakota is a school teacher there and is posing with his own high school buddy, Sherman McDonnell from Rock Springs, Wyoming.

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay Fishing Report for Week of June 12-19, 2016

One for the books!

Maybe this week I should just let you all look at the photos and let the photos do the talking! In the 21 years that I’ve been doimg our weekly reports, I can’t remember too many times when I had TOO MANY PHOTOS OF SUCH GREAT FISHING!

These are just SOME of the photos this week. I could have added 20 more. You might look at some photos and say, “Hey, that’s the same guy just holding the fish differently!” Nope…that’s the same guy kicking butt and catching more fish on another day. A completely different photo!

Generally speaking…even without the fishing just great weather and water.. for once! No wind issues. No big waves to contend with. It was like the Baja Chamber of Commerce dialed-in pretty much the perfect week. Even our snorkelers and divers told us there was “so much life in the water, it was nuts!” Whales…dolphin…manta rays…turtles…sealions…the ocean was alive this week.

LAS ARENAS

This was the kind of week they used to write books about. This was the kind of historic week your father and grandfather would tell around the campfire with a cold beer and a glazed look in his eye.

It started about late last week. All of a sudden the waters came alive with wahoo. Our pangas were getting 1-5 wahoo per panga PER DAY! And losing almost as many to luck, experience, busted tackle…

Wahoo were free swimming around the boats while guys were fighting other fish. One panga LOST 7 wahoo one day!

These fish were running 20-60 pounds and I saw quite a few anglers come back with big smiles…and hold up a burned thumb with with a big red blister on it from reflexively trying to stop the reel with their thumbs! Even some of my experienced guys “forgot” and shot that thumb to the spool only to have it come back seared! But, this week it was almot like a funny “badge of honor” to have a burned thumb and a grin! It only didn’t count if you lost the fish! And there were plenty of fish lost.

If you’re coming down, bring those Yo-Zuri Magnums and the Rapala XRap 15’s, 20’s and 30’s. The stores have run out of them here in La Paz and if you lose one of the captain’s rigs, it costs about $40 to buy a new one…if one can be found!

Put on a short wire leader…maybe 60 pound multi-strand…and if you can, take off the treble hooks and put on a single 5/0-7/0 siwash hook. You’ll increase your catch-ratio! Purple and dark colors are best, but fire tiger and dorado colors are working too.

As for other species…where do I begin?

Look at the roosterfish! Our smallest were 25 pounders. The largest were up to possibly 80 pounds. It was a week for big pez gallos. If you’re coming for roosters just be prepared to spend some time catching the big ladyfish baits. You have to catch them one-at-a-time and that can take some doing.

There were also some huge 30-50 pound amberjack…scattered football yellowfin tuna up to about 18 pounds…and still lots of the tasty white bonito as well.

Dorado didn’t bite much, but the ones we caught were finally some legit 20-25 pound class fish. Finally! Last month, we were hard-pressed to find even a 5-pound mahi.

Some surprising catches including some of the largest rainbow runners I have ever seen. They’re cousin to the yellowtail and amberjack and also tasty table fare. There are still some sierra and pargo around as well.

All-in-all, there were about 15 species of fish we got this week in the area which made for alot of fun.

Oh, and there were still ALOT of sharks in the water and we’re hooking several a day from 80-200 pounders that included hammerheads, blues, silkies, white tip and makos. Don’t know why they started biting about 2 weeks ago, but they’re alot of fun to hook and a helluva battle. We’re releasing all of them. Far too dangerous to put in a panga plus illegal to take without a commercial licenses.

LA PAZ

Compared to the blitz bite going on this week at Las Arenas/ Muertos, La Paz fishing didn’t compare. It wasn’t bad. It’s just that most of our anglers switched from La Paz reservations to fish with our Las Arenas fleet so they could get a shot at the wahoo and big roosters.

But, La Paz fishing wasn’t bad.

Dorado are larger. The islands are holding some great pargo and cabrilla. Plus the north end of Cerralvo Island, especially if you know how to fish iron has some huge amberjack and yellowtail that are smokin’ some of the drags! Some of the larger stretches of beaches also produced some of the monster roosterfish that went 40-80 pounds.

We had one huge dog-tooth snapper (see the photos) that was caught right in La Paz Bay in shallow water while the anglers were trying to make bait!

PARTING NOTE – UPDATE

Saturday and Sunday…full moon and winds came up…not sure what happened…lots of heat too. Fishing on both sides came down a few notches. The fishing on the La Paz side Sunday was almost zilch…nada…really tough fishing… although Las Arenas continued to kick out big roosterfish and variety including some wahoo…but not at the full-speed it was going at during the week. Hopefully, picks back up again.

Whoa! First-timers with us! Mike Gonzalves, Jacob Curtis, Don Vegter from Torrance CA put the lures in the water and within minutes later all heck broke loose. Three wahoo…1, 2, 3 !!!! Two others were lost! As the guys tell me, one of the purple Rapalas must have been crashed by a beast…the split ring holding one set of treble hooks on the lure was torn apart by the impact. Never seen that happen although on two occasions over the years, I’ve seen wahoo hit so hard the Rapala was actually broken or cracked…and you know what it takes to bust one of those!

Young Alex Coleman had quite a week! Three roosters (released) and two wahoo! See photos below.

Doin’ it right! Ryan Williamson from Washington on his first trip here with Tailhunter dropped a purple Rapala with Captain Juan at the north end of Cerralvo Island near La Reyna and almost immediately got ripped by this toothy speedster! Wahoo blood on the deck! ‪

That’s alot of meat! Mike Donnelly and Ed Sorenson put the heavy wood to this big dog-tooth snapper and amberjack outside of Bahia de los Muertos.

Bob Sayre from Chicago and our own Jorge Romero hooked this striped marlin that Bob fought for about an hour on just 40 pound test line. After he got it in (could not be released and meat was donated), Jorge’s line went screaming. They thought it was a big tuna as the first run took over 400 yards of line. Jorge fought the fish almost 2 hours to find it it was a 300 pound shark.

Like I said, Alex Coleman from Bakersfield had a a great week of fishing. Here’s one of his two wahoo. Cerralvo Island in the background.

Our friend from Woodland, Washington Grant Jensen got a nice bull dorado with Captain Victor.

The “right kind” for Don Vegter and Mike Gonsalves from Torrance CA. This was Don’s first wahoo. During the week he caught about 5 different species that he had never caught!

First day fishing and first trip to see us in La Paz, Jim Wilson from Marion, S. Dakota caught and released two nice roosterfish. Here’s the first!

Pretty fish for Dale Damron from Oregon. This barred pargo came back to the Tailhunter Restaurant for dinner.

Over 3 days of fishing, Mike Donnelly and Ed Sorenson caught about a dozen different species of fish including sharks, pargo, cabrilla, jack crevalle, bonito and others. Here, they’ve got a handful of pompano amberjack and a white bonito.

Captain Armando with Jessica and Shelley Reeves from Montana. Shelley has a dorado in her hands and Jessica has about the biggest rainbow runner I’ve seen in years. It’s cousin to the yellowtail and a good eater!

WINDIEST WEEK – LOTS OF VARIETY!

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay Fishing Report for Week of June 5-12, 2016

Crazy windy week here which is nuts for June. None of us down here can remember it ever being this windy in June and surely not for so many consecutive days. It made for some really choppy unusual waters and some especially chilly mornings where us locals were wearing jackets, long pants and sweatshirts even though by afternoon, it broke into the high 90’s. Of course, all of that had an effect on fishing…and our anglers too!

Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay

Again, like other weeks there is just no way to describe the fishing there. It’s great. It’s bad. It’s super. It’s stinky. It’s up. It’s down. We’re catching this. But we’re not catching that. Weather as great. Weather was crap. Every day is different. Every panga is different. Every angler has a different opinion…EVERY DAY! Some come back with long faces and don’t talk when they get back. Others have a great day on the panga right next to it and can’t stop jumping up and down about the great day they had. The next day, it’s just the opposite. I’ve had clients just get skunked day-after-day. Regulars who normally do great. Then, I have rookies who go out every day and have banner days that are off-the-charts! This particular week has been a microcosm of the whole season…so far.

But, take a look at the photos this week. Hard to deny that there’s fish around. The other side of the equation is that…some anglers who come back with bad days…HOOKED FISH but lost them! Now THAT’s a different story. Some of these fish are BIG. If the fish comes off…if the line breaks…if the angler makes an error…or hey, sometimes that fish just wasn’t meant to be caught…well, that’s just fishing! And there were some big fish caught.

So, darn Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay sure has been kicking out alot of variety! If you want to go to a spot and catch a fish you’ve never caught before or want to cross a fish off your bucket list, we had as many as 14 different species this week! One day alone, I counted 10 different species. Some of the fish this week included:

Pargo – some dog-tooth up to 20 pounds

Yellow snapper

Bonito – white bonito that tastes like tuna with some great meat

Yellowfin tuna – firecracker footballs

Yellowtail – up to 20 pounds (just a few)

Striped marlin – 100 to120 pounders

Cabrilla – (Mexican seabass)

Amberjack – (like giant yellowtail) but most about 10-15 pounds

Barred Pargo – some big ones!

Jack Crevalle

Dorado – finally getting larger up to about 15 pounds, but not alot of them

Roosterfish – 25 to 60 pounders this week

Wahoo – Lost a few but the ones caught were about 20-40 pounders

Rainbow runners – same family as yellowtail and good eating

Pompano – delicious 5-10 pounders

…and SHARKS! Lots of sharks!

Holy cow…where did all the sharks come from?

We normally don’t catch many, and we’ve not had much of anything at all for the whole season. But this week, I believe we hooked over 25 of them in the pangas! Hammerheads…blues…thresher…lemon…mako…reef…Some of them were 200-300 pounders.

We call them the “grinning men in the grey suits!” We think they moved in to feed on all the bonito we have in the water right now. But, some days, every panga hooked 1-2 of them and the fights lasted up to 2 hours and just beat up the anglers! Of course, we release all of them and would never put them into our pangas as a security issue (I used to commercially fish sharks and even a dead shark can injure someone). But, they’re a great sport fish to hook up, but they will surely take the fight to you.

In the hot sun, it can really beat you up. Alot of the time, the angler gets slammed and really don’t know what they’ve hooked. A big tuna? A marlin? No telling on this first blistering runs! It’s not until the fish is close to the boat after agonizing time on a bent rod, they realize they’ve been fighting a shark!

LA PAZ

Like Las Arenas, our La Paz anglers have encountered some of the same things. The bite varies from day-to-day and from panga to panga and location to location. It’s a big ocean out there and a panga 100 yards away from another panga can have completely different outcomes. Wind had an effect on where we fished as well since fishing out’ve La Paz, there’s alot more open water and we have to travel further to the fishing areas.

The north end of Cerralvo Island produced some really nice wahoo and amberjack this week although a bit of a run to La Reyna and La Reynita. The wahoo were larger 40 pounders. The amberjack bigger than 50 pounds with some really big fish lost.

As well, there’s more dorado on the La Paz side than Las Arenas and up to about 18 or 20 pounds at times. Around the islands and reefs, decent fishing for bigger pargo, cabrilla and amberjack with big white bonito and jack crevalle around the drop offs.

MORE BIG HEARTS – (and some big hearts from small people…read below!)

Our amigo from Kansas, Marion Lawver, came down with a bunch of things for the kids stuffed in his ice chest.

Colorado gets a shout-out for special friends, Diego and Kelly Jimenez who have been bringing things every year for the kids and families. And there’s a special story to this as well. See the attached story!

These two toys have a remarkable story on how they ended up in Mexico with Jill and Catlyn, our Mexican pocket panther, giving their approval.

For 3 years, our wonderful friends and clients have been donating to our Tailhunter Outreach Program where we collect things for some underserved schoolkids as well as for the womens shelter here in La Paz. We’ve collected well-over 2000 pounds for Jill’s program thanks to you and more gets brought every week! On behalf of so many kids and families, we are incredibly grateful.

Take a look at the photo above. Good Tailhunter friends, Kelly and Diego Jimenez arrived with some great school supplies but when they dug into their own suitcases back at the hotel, they found two favorite dolls that belonged to their granddaughter.

The dolls had been hidden in the luggage. There was a note that said,
“These are my favorite, but maybe a little girl in Mexico needs them more and they will make her happy.”

As pretty a picture as you will see of a roosterfish in Baja! John Dupre from Aliso Viejo CA came down this week to get a rooster and did it on the first day with Captai Archangel right off the Las Arenas lighthouse. This photo is pretty much frameable! The fish was released.

Always in the fish, Taylor Murphey from Lakewood CA, fishing with granpa Roger Thompson and Captain Hugo, stuck this beautiful amberjack off the south end of Cerralvo Island dragging a purple Rapala xrap 30.

These two amigos for ours, Randy Payne and Steve Artis, did a number for several days on the amberjack and other species like the snapper and pompano seen in the photo while posing on the beach at Bahia de los Muertos. The amberjack bit strong earlier in the week.

rooster magdaleno ed Guarderas tags 6-16

Steve Magdaleno and Ed Guarderos tag-teamed this big gallo with Captain Gerardo off Las Arenas Point. Like others this week, they wanted to target a rooster. The big fish was released.

On the iron! Louie D’Esposito from Los Angeles hit tis big one at La Reyna at the north end of Cerralvo Island.

Spencer Timmons from Sacramento CA was staying at the Rancho la Costa and got this nice pompano just outside of Bahia de los Muertos.

Captain Pancho with two of the funnest guys of the week…brothers Robert and Jerry Rost from Idaho with a nice big dog-tooth snapper.

Right out of the chute, Ron, Sr. and Ron, Jr. Lawver from Arizona got this marlin with Captain Pancho. They didn’t want to leave it in the sun on the deck so brought it back to the beach to clean then went back out. The fish could not be released.

Captain Archangel had a hot hand this week for big roosters for sure. Check out another big one for him and Leah Dupre! If you figure he’s only about 5’3″ and she’s shorter than him…this is a toad of a fish. They released it!

Debbie Dunning got herself and amberjack fishing out’ve Bahia de los Muertos from the Rancho de la Costa resort.

Josh Dupre give Derreck Dupre a hand with his marlin they got mid-week. This is the first week the marlin have been willing to bite. They were unable to release the fish but donated the meat to the town.

First timers with us Carter and Tendra Andrews on the beach at Bahia de Los Suenos with their catch that included a dorado and an amberjack that ended up at dinner at Tailhunter Restaurant .

Taylor Murphey with another massive catch for the week. This big barred pargo fell for another purple Rapala off the shallow end at S. Cerralvo Island. Captain Hugo was running the boat.

That’s a good day in anyone’s book! Johnny Drucker said he was “really tired” after putting all these amberjack in the boat. Johnny is from the Phoenix AZ area.

He came for one and he got one. Josh Dupre caught and released this nice roosterfish out’ve Bahia de los Muertos with Captain Adolfo.

He’s gonna cook it up! Mauricio Lucero has himself a really nice dog-tooth snapper! Some of the best eating fish we have!

James Aultz from Oregon with Captain Armando had a good week. The first day not so good, but with each subsequent day his bite got better. Amberjack and this dorado started things off.

It’s really hard to take a good photo when you have a big fat roosterfish that’s not too happy and it’s slamming you around and you’re just trying to get a quick photo so you can let it go! Josh Dupre with the fish that made our area famous!

INSHORE FISH HIGHLIGHT THE WEEK!

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay Fishing Report for Week of May 29-June 5, 2016

Again, it was a week full of variety as far as fishing. Weather-wise it was in that category too! We had some blazing hot days where we hit into the 100’s then other days when the winds blew, the seas were jacked and we were 20 degrees cooler! We even got a few raindrops and a tad of thunder and lighting. Fishing, correspondingly was all over the place. You put a line in the water or dragged a lure over the side and you never knew if you were going to catch or what you were going to catch. It could be crazy or not. Every day and every spot was different.

LAS ARENAS/ MUERTOS BAY

This was our most consistent fishing this week. We started off the week with a bang as the jacks put on a show. The amberjack ranging from 10-20 pounds came on strong in the rocky shallows where almost any bait or lure got smacked! These are great powerful fighters and good eating fish too! Larger fish in the 30-60 pound class were lost to the rocks or agonizingly close to the boat within gaff distance. As the week went on, fewer but larger fish took over. In those same areas schools of jack crevalle, another cousin, also bit the lines. Not so good eating, but still feisty on a rod and reel.

The other jack that took center stage were our famous rooster fish!

The bigger beasts moved in this week. We had some fish over 50 and close to 70 pounds hit the rods and some larger fish lost! The smallest fish we reported was “at least 30 pounds” this week. All the fish were released after some long tough battles, especially in the heat we encountered.

Other action in the area…the dorado aren’t crashing yet, but at least they’re getting bigger. They’ve gone from 2-3 pounders to 10-15 pounders ,but not many…just yet. As well, we got into a number of marlin that seem ready to bite. Most were the 100-120 pounders, but we had some larger blues in the 200 pound class that were lost on the light tackle and we also had several sailfish that were hooked. Most of the billfish that made it to the boats were released.

The bite was rounded out by wahoo…yes…they are still around and we hooked more than we caught or they broke off or short bit the lures. Also, the tasty white bonito provided lots of action as well as pargo of several varieties. Also, 3 sharks caught and released which is unusual.

LA PAZ

Erratically good and erratically bad! Some boats hit and others skunked. If you found the spot, it could be banner. If you searched and didn’t connect, then it could be a long day. Then there were days when all the boats found fish. I think alot has to do with the winds that have pushed warm and cold water all around. It has alot to do with the water temperatures ranging from high 60’s to mid-80’s. I think once the water settle down, the area will get into it’s regular groove. For now, it’s hit or miss. Oh, we also had some massive tide swings this week too.

The dorado for our La Paz fleet proved elusive. They’re bigger than previously, but just not around much or when we saw them this week they just didn’t seem interested. Our captains tended to take our clients into the rocks where they found some horse yellowtail, big tough pargo and cabrilla, amberjack, jack crevalle and even some big roosters that were lost. They guys who knew how to fish the iron did best. Bait is available, but it’s all big baits. Trap hook rigs helped the bite ratio.

As our season is well underway, a quick shout-out to so many of our Tailhunter Family and Tribal members that have been stuffing empty ice chest and corners of their luggage once again with items for our Tailhunter Outreach Program! You’re the best!

For 3 years, your generosity has helped two underprivileged schools on the outskirts of La Paz; the battered womens’ shelter and we’ve just added a local orphanage as well. In the past 3 years close to 2000 pounds of much needed items have been shared and distributed to kids and families that barely get by. Thank you so much for the generous hearts, my friends! Also, one photo missing of John Dworak from Colorado who decided to leave his Apple iPad for us and said, “Some kid can make good use of this.” And he handed over the pad and charger. Wow!

If he looks a little bedraggled that’s cuz Mike just pulled in this huge wahoo estimated at 80 pounds that was a total beast. After we packaged the meat, the head alone weighed almost 20 pounds!

Wonderful guy, Roger Selner, from Montana was given this trip as part of his retirement package from Eastman publishing. You might recognize him if you go to the hunting and fishing shows. For more than 35 years, Roger drove the 30 foot long trailer that held all the Eastman hunting trophy elk heads to all the shows. He took this big trophy dog-tooth snapper after a long day right at the very end trying for a big roosterfish off the Punta Perrico rocks.

Tom Mullican had never made it into our fishing reports but now is in it two weeks in a row. His first yellowtail taken north of La Paz around Espirito Santo Island. Amigo Tom is from McCammon, Idaho. He got his first wahoo (see photos below), first yellowtail, a huge pargo and a tuna over 5 days fishing.

Persistence paid off for Mike Schoder our amigo from Alaska with Captain Efren. Mike was here flyfishing but decided to put a trolling lure out instead and ripped this wahoo up! Nice jacket, Mike! He told me later, it’s his wife’s jacket!

One of our newest amigas! First timer, American Airlines pilot Jan King from Phoenix with Captain Archangel and the biggest dorado of the week, a nice sierra and a white bonito (very tasty).

Dan Bovee and his dad, Jim, worked as hard as anyone all week with Captain Pancho for some scratchy fishing, but did get a nice sailfish out at the 88 spot (released) and this hefty roosterfish a few hundred yards off Punta Perrico. Also released! The guys are from San Diego.

Gary Wagner, owner of Cabo’s famous Giggling Marlin Bar and the Rancho and the Rancho de Costa in Muertos Bay got himself a really nice pompano that’s gonna be great eating!

Tom Mullican came down on a special trip just to get himself a wahoo and after losing two (including a monster) and burning his thumb, he finally put this beauty on the panga!

Wally King is already planning to come back in the fall after his first trip to see us. Really a fun couple to have him and his wife visit us from Phoenix. He got this surprising sierra…normally a cold-water fish, but great eating!

I don’t think I’ve seen a guy prouder to catch a roosterfish and our amigo, Roger Selner from Montana who got this big boy literally right off the rocks on a big live bait!

Taylor is always into fish. Trolling a purple Rapala off the south end of Cerralvo Island, she got this dog-tooth pargo plus a big amberjack and cabrilla. She never fails!

Nancy Hofecker from Pennsylvania had never fished in the ocean before and gets a roosterfish right out of the blocks! The fish was released.

TOUGH WEEK – TOUGH FISH

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay Fishing Report for Week of May 22-29, 2016

First off…Happy Memorial Day Weekend and a big God bless and thank you to all who serve or who have served and their families. We live here in Mexico, but never forget what you have all sacrificed. We hope you enjoy a safe and happy weekend. Times like this we especially miss these weekends so have some fried chicken and potato salad for us!

Well…

This week had pretty much a bit of everything. Good fishing and bad catching…full moon…lots of wind…even some rain and some hot sunshine to go along. And water temperatures are all over the place from the 60’s to mid-70’s! A true fish report would need comments by every single angler we had this week because it ran the gamut. And the comments would be as varied as the fishing.

Overall, it was rugged. The big fish of last week just decided pretty much not to play. Or something. Because the other side of the story is that there WERE some big fish HOOKED! There were some opportunities. But, fish were lost either because of “angler error,” inexperience with big fish or just plain bad luck. There was a big tuna hooked and lost . There were a number of wahoo lost. There were yellowtail and big roosters and amberjack lost. So, coupled with just some funky other variables like weather, winds, difficult bait and other stuff…well…dangit, it was a poor week of catching. It could have been so much better!

LA PAZ

We had those toad yellowtail pop up two weeks ago in the 30-50 pound class and it seemed the dorado were getting bigger. This week, there were fewer hook-ups and the dorado took the week off or something. The yellowtail we did hook were lost and there were just a few small dorado our guys worked hard to find. Our captains did find some nice spots of cabrilla and pargo inshore along with some big triggerfish. Again, more fish lost than caught. But, these pargo and cabrilla are always tough in the rocks. You know you’re gonna lose fish there when these fish are so powerful, but that’s part of the fun. Even the best angler knows he’s sometimes going to a gunfight with a pocket knife.

LAS ARENAS

We didn’t hook any yellowtail this week, but no doubt there’s wahoo and rooster fish roaming the waters. But, we were hampered by strong winds that I thought were gone for the season and even some heavy clouds and some rain as well! Plus, some nice hook-ups were lost. Oh well…that’s fishing. Still got some pargo, cabrilla and those tasty white bonito are still around. But, I won’t lie. It was a tough pull. If you got a bite and missed it, it could have been a big fish and you might not get another bite all day. I had to tell one guy who lost 2 wahoo…”Put down the beer and cigarette next time.” Both times his hands were occupied when the wahoo slammed him and of course, he ended up dropping the cigarette, spilling his beer AND missing the wahoo!

We also had a big tuna on the line for awhile, but it unbuttoned and the angler admitted he didn’t know how to fight a fish that big. Hopefully, as this full moon gets behind us, the fishing will get better. I’m not a big believer in the full-moon effect on fishing, but it could’t hurt if it went away!

CELEBRATING THE MOMENTS

We’ve been here now in La Paz over 20 years. We have come to know so many awesome people and the best part of our job is so many “clients” become our friends! Indeed, part of the Tailhunter Tribe.

John “J.D” Drucker from Portland, has been fishing with us for 18 years with his wife, Donna. They sometimes visited us twice a year, but every year they were here without fail. They were part of our family here.

After, last year’s trip in May, J.D. was diagnosed with cancer and passed early this year, but he and Donna had promised no matter what, they were coming back to La Paz this May for their 30th Anniversary.

Donna made good on that promise.

She brought him and 54r4 18 members of the family and John’s ashes to be spread in Bahia de Los Muertos using his favorite Tailhunter captains. They all remembered him.

So, this past Saturday afternoon we all climbed in vans and we brought J.D. on his last trip to Muertos.

When we got there, the winds were ripping and the waves were white-capping and I was worried how this was all going to happen with the ashes. Amazingly, as we reached the spot, the wind died and seas went flat…

Three floral wreaths were carried out to the mouth of Bahia de los Muertos by the 18 family members. Each of the 7 pangas had a small baggie of J.D.’s ashes.

The current also seemed to stop.

A few words. Some minutes of silence. The wreaths barely moved from their spot. Muertos Bay was one of JD’s favorite places. A round of applause to send him on his way before returning to the beach.

The next day (today Sunday) in 6 pangas everyone went fishing! And in a week when almost very little was biting, the family posted up 3 marlin ( released). Quite a few nice-sized amberjack, white bonito, dorado, sierra, some big pargo and cabrilla too! Most had never fished before, let alone fished the area. But the fish bit!

First timer hits a big one! Jay Gibbons from Payette, Idaho got in the middle of a school of big dog-tooth snapper near Cerralvo Island with Captain Gerardo of the Tailhunter fleet and managed to get this big one to the boat and losing several others to the rocks and big teeth. He was fishing for rooster fish with a big sabalo (ladyfish) when the school of snapper came up from the rocks.

Kelsea Taylor from Kansas was visiting with her husband for the first time to La Paz and got in a day of fishing. She tangled with dorado, but locked into this nice yellowfin tuna that’s about as big as she is, but she battled it tough. She’s shown with her husband, Dave, and captain Jorge from the Tailhunter Fleet.

Jake Spencer wrestles with a big thick yellowtail to try to hold it still for a photo as the fish slaps him around! He got a great photo, nonetheless! He was fishing with our Tailhunter La Paz fleet out’ve La Paz Bay.

Captain Victor knows something is up. Jason hooked 2 wahoo and thought he had a “slow day.” He didn’t know how prized wahoo are. Anglers come for years and never get one. He also didn’t know how good eating they are and gave away all his fish! I told him a chunk of wahoo can go for as much as $50 a pound!

Just when we thought the cold-water fishing was done, the yellowtail came on strong this week for our La Paz and Las Arenas fleets for Tailhunter. Rick Choate from Boise, Idaho shows off a monster yellowtail he got on live bait near Espirito Santo Island. This was his first time fishing with Tailhunter and visiting La Paz

Randy Choate, our good amigo from Payette ID, gets a hand from Tailhunter Captain Boli with another big yellowtail. This is very big fish…I think Randy is about 6’4″ tall. Others were lost but Randy said the yellowtail were hitting baits right on the surface!

From McCammon, Idaho, Tom Mullican is making two trips to La Paz this year. He’s coming back in the fall, but this early trip paid off with a huge mullet snapper (pargo liso) that really went back and forth before he got it in the boat. He was using live bait.

Nice day and some really nice amberjack for Captain Armando with Al and Lisa Salmen who only had one day to get on the water with us and did well.

One of our favorite funny guys (“I am always in trouble with Jilly!), Tom Ames holds up another of the big yellowtail that decided to come up and bite this week with our La Paz fleet.

This man can fish…and he can eat fish! Our amigo, Kevin Shiotani gives a thumbs up to 4 yellowtail on the concrete boat ramp at Bahia de los Muertos. The fish were picked up off Cerralvo Island.

Tom has had some kind of a week with a giant pargo, wahoo, tuna, yellowtail AND dorado in the boat! But see the photo below of how it was hooked!

FULL MOON BRINGS BIG FISH!

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay Fishing Report for Week of May 15-22, 2016

I’m not sure if the big full moon did us any favors, but it surely didn’t seem to hurt us this week. We had some really strong winds come up early that were a bigger nuisance than the moon but when the winds tapered off later in the week, fishing cranked up. There weren’t ALOT of fish but the ones we seemed to get were TOADS and HORSES! Plus there were some surprise bites too!

LA PAZ

What’s going on here? I was pretty much writing off the cold-water bite for the season. It’s getting warm. The sun is out and the waters and air are showing summer everywhere. We had not gotten yellowtail in weeks. Even when they were biting, it was so-so. I would not have even called it a yellowtail season. With El Nino, our waters were just too warm to give us much of a cold water season.

Then, out’ve nowhere, the yellowtail start biting. And not little weenie firecrackers either. These were 25-50 pound sluggers that came pretty close to pulling guys outta their socks. We got a few, but probably lost 3 for every fish boated.

And these were NOT fish skulking down deep. These fish were FOAMING and crashing on the surface and were taking flylined (no weight) live and dead baits! Some guys had some epic battles.

I don’t know how long these grade of fish will be around. But, we’re enjoying it! Or getting frustrated by lost fish! Up to now, I’ve not hesitated sending guys out with light tackle because all we had was some smallish fun dorado. But these yellowtail are busting 40, 50 and 60 pound test, especially if the angler doesn’t pressure the fish to keep the out’ve the rocks! Or conversely, the anglers panic and horse the fish and break off by not letting the fish run a bit. (It’s a delicate balance that just makes it fun…until you lose the fish!).

Those little dorado are still around too and we’re seeing a bit more activity with pargo and cabrilla too! Billfish are around, but not yet willing to chew!

LAS ARENAS

Again, just like with our Taihunter La Paz fleet…it’s crazy! Cold water monsters came back!

Big yellowtail showed up to about 40 pounds…

Amberjack to 30 pounds…

Sierra, big cabrilla, jack crevalle, delicious white bonito…

And the return of the big dog-tooth cubera snapper and the mullet snapper (pargo liso)! We had big schools of them near the island spawning just like in the old days so that it looked like a “Japanese koi pond on steroids” with 20-50 pound fish swirling and crashing! We lost quite a few fish in the shallow waters, but the fish that came in were beasts!

And then, late in the week, not only did the 20-40 pound wahoo show up, but we also hooked some yellowfin tuna as well…footballs of 15-25 pounds! Again, we lost more fish than we caught, but you never knew what was out there.

Surprisingly, not many rooster fish were caught, but that could also be because we didn’t have that many guys out chasing them with the other species that have shown up.

Tickled! Former Basque weightlifter Johnny Vergara is her with us this week for the first time and got slammed by a couple of yellowtail today and couldn’t believe the power when his arms started cramping up! “These fish don’t nibble like the trout in Idaho!” Different set of muscles too! Great to see a first timer lit up and light up and having fun!

Our Colorado flyfishing guys had a nice day of action on white bonito (very edible) and a big pargo mulato. On the beach at Muertos.

Barry Langley lives in Guadalajara now, but is originally from England and had one day to fish while visiting La Paz for the first time and got this nice wahoo on live bait just outside of Bahia de los Muertos fishing with the Tailhunter fleet.

We love this lady’s photos! Laura Page from Colorado always has the BEST smiles when she’s holding a fish like this dorado taken on the fly outside of La Paz Bay.

I don’t think Roger Thompson has ever been seen holding a small fish! On the yo-yo iron, Roger got this slugger of a yellowtail.

MIXED VARIETY AGAIN EVERY DAY A MYSTERY!

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay Fishing Report for Week of May 8-15, 2016

Overall, it was another mixed week of fishing for us. We had quite a variety of fish as both warm and cold water species remained in local waters as we transition to summertime conditions. Some boats did well. Others had to work harder for their fish. The next day, it could totally reverse with the “hot boats” going cold and the “cold boats” jumping the fish. Conversely, one day, all the fish would be cold water fish like cabrilla and pargo and some sierra or an occasional yellowtail. Next day we’d hit a tuna or wahoo and dorado, all warm water fish in pretty much exactly the same spots that produced the cooler water fish the day before. It was all mixed up!

Early in the week it got a little windy and we even had a touch of thunder, lightning and a sprinkle or two that didn’t deter anyone from being on the water. This week looks to be a little breezier according to forecasts, but overall, temperatures in the high 80’s and sunny.

However, strangely, as I’m writing this Sunday morning…it’s really windy and there’s some raindrops falling even tho’ there’s not a thing on the weather forecast!

One other note…I would have more roosterfish photos every week, but almost all of them get released so unless the anglers take a photo of it out on the water, I don’t get a photo to post up. But we ARE catching roosters!

La Paz

Our Tailhunter La Paz fleet continued to make it’s bread and butter on the other side of the bay by San Juan de la Costa where that school of mini-dorado has been good to us. We just wish the bigger models would show up. However, the bite wasn’t as generous as it had been when we usually got limits. This past week, maybe 3-6 fish was about it.

However, other areas started producing a bit bitter with some big amberjack coming off el Bajo seamount as well as Cabrilla plus rooster fish and some pargo and cabrilla biting around the open spots on Espirito Santo Island and around El Coyote. Bigger bait produced the bigger fish and for those who knew how to yo-yo iron, bigger fish were willing…especially some large yellowtail that we haven’t seen in about a month!

There was also a spot around La Reyna lighthouse and Punta Norte at Cerralvo Island that kept showing signs of tuna and some of our guys finally hit some as well as yellowtail and cabrilla for a fleeting bite. But that was one of the spots the was hot…then went cold the next day.

Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay

This again, is where most of our variety came from. Bait is still an issue, but we’re using a variety of things including some sardines, mackerel, ladyfish, mullet and frozen and live ballyhoo.

Every day, it’s different. Yellowtail popped up again early in the week. Wahoo made a small showing as well. Round that out with jack crevalle, alot of white bonito (very edible!) cabrilla, pargo, sierra and roosters up to about 40 pounds. Late in the week some decent dorado showed up near the buoys for really the first time and there’s been flurries of fast moving tuna we’re seeing but no takers…all very promising!

The issue is mostly one of predictability. We never know what’s going to bite! I tell guys (and gals) to just let the captain take you to the fish. Fish for what’s possible, and you’ll have the best success. If you go for the home run, you COULD get some, but you could also strike out. If you have more than one day, that’s a good shot but if you only have one day and you have it in your mind that you ONLY want wahoo…that could be the day that only the bonito bite! Go with the flow and catch what’s biting. Everyone is getting fish!

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay Fishing Report from Tailhunter Sportfishing for Week of May 1-8, 2016

Lifting 2 Yellowtail Marcus Yoo 5-16 tags

Marcus Yoo got a break from his duties with the U.S. Army in Salt Lake City in between overseas deployments and raced down to La Paz on a last-minute fishing trip with only one day to get in some fishing. He made the most of it with some amberjack, small dorado and these huge double-fisted yellowtail from La Paz Bay.

Giant pargo liso (mullet snapper) pulled out’ve the rocks by Jacinto Garcia from Mexicali with Tailhunters’ Captain Victor running the panga. Jacinto’s amigo, Miles Reiter from Monterey CA, battled a huge tuna over two hours before it wrapped around some buoy and busted off!

Two of our flyfishers from this week, Rene Paul and Bruce Merighi from Washington on a double hook up with their flyrods got to pull on some bonito, but roosters remained elusive and the guys worked hard all week.

Two more of our flyfishers who were down for the first time testing the waters, Steve Pratt and Paul Anderson who owns a flyshop up there on the Hood River of Oregon in the Dalles put alot of effort into their sport this week. This beautiful palomita, a member of the jack family, was one result . Great colorful photo too!

She’s great fun to have visit us this past week! Laura Page puts a serious bend into her flyrod and was able to get several different species to the boat. Laura and her husband are from the Denver area.

Young 12-year-old William Kelly from Laguna Beach came to La Paz for the first time and fishing with Tailhunter’s Captain Adolfo put the hurt on this beautiful rooster fish just outside south of Bahia de los Muertos close to shore. The fish was released!

That’s captain Lorenzo back there, not trying to cover his identity, but wearing a sunshade mask posing with Ernie Loya and Jorge Ramirez with two of their big yellowtail caught this week.

Like all of our flyfishers this week, Tom Page, from Denver worked really hard at his craft and he kept smiling especially after finally working this tough bonito to the boat.

Potential world record tasted pretty good at Tailhunter Restaurant with chimichurri sauce on it. This hawkfish(china maru) caught by Dave Schneider yesterday of San Jose and held here by buddy Dan Moreno looked suspiciously large. Most that I see are about 3-5 pounds. The guys were fishing with our Captain Pancho and brought the fish for us to cook up. I went downstairs to our office to check the record books. Turns out the IGFA record is 9.7 pounds. We estimate this fish might have been 12 pounds! Dan is about 6’2″ and 250. The guys were just cleaning their plates up! I think this is the 4th potential world record in 3 years that ended up tasting pretty good!

First time visitor from San Diego area, Dave Houshar caught and released a pretty pez gallo out of Bahia de los Muertos. Captain Jorge helps out .

Greg’s a happy fella with this nice jack crevalle that he toughed to the boat. Big schools of feisty jacks have moved into the area to provide some great sport.

Ian Hudson from Hollister CA has a big dog roosterfish in his hands estimated at more than 50 pounds that doesn’t want it’s picture taken before he gets released. That’s Punta Arena in the background.

One of our favorite amigas, Donna Thompson and her daughter Dana Hohn from Texas hold onto a chunky amberjack the hooked fishing blue and white yo-yo irons.

That’s gonna make someone a good dinner! Alfie Adams holds up a colorful barred pargo (pargo mulatto) on the beach at Bahia de los Muertos.

Dave Houshar and Captain Jorge give the thumbs up to another amberjack which started biting nicely this week.

WEEK of SURPRISES

La Paz- Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay Fishing Reports for Week of May 1-8, 2016

What had another few “jags” pop up in this already-quirky season of fishing. Just when I figured waters had gotten too warm and the “cold water” fishing was done, nature proved me wrong and some species we had not seen in several weeks like big pargo and especially big yellowtail surprised all of us with some serious bent-rod action plus continued decent biters on rooster fish and other species.

LA PAZ

For the past few weeks, this has been a good fall-back area for us to fish. There’s a spot across La Paz Bay on the way to San Juan de la Costa that has held a nice little honey hole of smaller dorado. Nothing, but but worth a late-morning or early afternoon of good action of fish 5-10 pounds with limits not uncommon. There had been very little else going on although the conditions really have looked good.

However, this past week, our anglers hit into some cabrilla and pargo, amberjack and roosters to give up a little more variety, but the big surprise was some really big-shouldered yellowtail that I thought were long gone. These 30-40 pound fish were slugs and powerful fighters resulting in more fish lost than caught but finally good to see some quality-sized fish show up.

LAS ARENAS

It’s been hit or miss alot for our Las Arenas anglers during this early part of the season. It hasn’t been bad. It’s just been erratic and inconsistent. One day great. Next day so-so. One boat does great. The boat next to it can’t even buy a fish! One day it’s cabrilla and sierra. The next day in the same spot, it’s bonito. Next day rooster fish, but no bonito.

There’s just no way to pinpoint anything!

However, late in the week we had a rush of some of those big yellowtail up to about 40 pounds plus amberjack, larger rooster fish and even some big pargo liso (mullet snapper) that we haven’t seen in awhile…surely not that big! This one was a slugger!

One of our guys also tied into a big-boy tuna we estimate over 100 pounds that he fought for over 2 hours until it busted him off by wrapping around a buoy!

We had some great flyfishers here this week. They really worked hard at it, but no roosters came up although several were almost agonizingly closely caught. However, they did get into action on bonito, ladyfish, and triggers.

Bait is still an issue, but we’re using anything we can get our hands on!

WHALESHARKS

Warm shallow bay water is a great place for these youngsters!

It seems like they’re lethargic swimmers until you get in the water with them. When they want to move, they can scoot. Look closely and you can see the sandy bottom.

I remember back in the day when we would get excited if there was a single whaleshark in the bay. Now, we’re so non-chalant that we’re not even excited if there’s less than 5 or 6. Many times, there’s way more! This past week or two, we’ve had as many as 3 dozen small to medium juvenile whalesharks in the bay up to about 20′ long! And they are only in about 10 feet of water so we’ve been running daily snorkel trips to swim with them. It’s an incredible experience with these gentle animals Thanks to Marcus Yoo for the great photos.

It might not be the size of the fish but certainly the exhuberance of the moment! Such a fine photo of Captain Pancho with Joanie Papanek with her first fish! She and her husband know their way around cameras as they used to produce commercials and he’s a professional photographer and owners of Cabo Living Magazine. They also got a big roosterfish that day, that they released.

Just outside of Bahia de Los Muertos, Pat Kelly and his son, William caught and released 3 nice roosterfish while fishing with Captain Adolfo .

Our good amigos, Rick and Amy Kasper, who visit us from Wyoming where they are hunting outfitters and Rick has his TV show, got into some nice dorado while fishing out’ve La Paz Bay at the spot way on the other side of the Bay at San Juan de la Costa. Both of them celebrated birthdays this week as well.

The shot is a tad blurry, but no mistaking Greg’s smile of his big roosterfish he caught and released. It’s a thick fish and I believe it’s his bigger personal best fish too! He’s from Vancouver Canada!

Another of our Canadian amigos who spent the week with us, Bob Winkler caught and released another nice roosterfish off Punta Perrico.

ROOSTERS LEAD THE WAY

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay Fishing Report for Week of April 24-May 1, 2016

If nothing else, it was a nice week weather-wise although a bit chilly and breezy in the morning. It still feels like it’s early in the season and the fish are having trouble getting into gear. But temps were in the 80’s to low 90’s all week and thankfully, dorado and especially dorado kept things interesting.

That same spot on the other side of the bay near San Juan de la Costa kept us in the game. There’s a ton of sargasso weed all over the place and you would think the dorado would just be foaming, but there seems to be just that one concentration of fish. Nothing big, but lots of good action. Fish are at least 10 pounders now which is a big improvement over what we were getting a few weeks ago when it was more like a trout fishery! Most days when we send boats out there, they’re getting limits or near limits. One bit of advice, however, is that the bite is a bit late sometimes. If you pull of the spot too early because you’re bored, you might just miss the bite which seems to perk up later. But, it’s been almost a sure thing. As well, there’s some spots near the island now that are kicking out some pargo and rooster fish. At least, too, we have bait as well

Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay

Still the most anemic of places. It’s erratic to say the least. One day, it’s great fun on tons of bonito and smaller inshore fish. Next day, we have a great day on rooster fish 20-50 pound and a couple biters on wahoo too. Maybe even a dorado or two or some amberjack. One day, among just 4 pangas, we had a dozen roosters caught and released.

Then, the next day…it’s sierra and pargo. One day, there’s tons of big ladyfish (sabalo) which is great bait for roosters. Next day, no big bait at all. Just no putting your finger on it at all. However, it’s just one of those times and places where if you want a big fish, you gotta go. The day you decided to fish in La Paz might be the day the big boys decide to come to the party.
