Fish were hard to come by this past week, let alone BIG fish! But Shawn Parker knocked in this big bull dorado fishing with our Tailhunter Las Arenas fleet. Great colors!

Geri Cammack loves to fish and she always does well and I have so many photos of her laughing. But not on this one for some reason even tho’ she has a big dorado on the gaff! Geri is from Idaho and was visiting us with amigo, Al Sandstrom. (And they love eating their fish at Tailhunters Restaurant)

I love goof-ball candid shots. One of the best of the season is Captain Rogelio “Jolly Roger” Camacho who had the best week of any of our captains with stellar fishing 5 straight days with Leif Dover, our Atlanta GA amigo who visits us twice a year and shows off another big bull dorado.

One of the funnest guys, but always takes serious fishing photos, Walt Topping from the Santa Ynez Valley got into the report with a nice bull while fishing with Captain Boli and our Tailhunter La Paz fleet.

Johnny Gilbertson hung tough all week even during difficult fishing and kept at it hard! He did get this bull dorado just off Punta Arenas one of his days fishing with our Las Arenas fleet.

CONDITIONS GOOD BUT FISH PLAY HARD-TO-GET! TOUGH WEEK OF FISHING…

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Aug. 24-31, 2014

It was a strange and not very good week on alot of levels here. It was hard to put a finger on it. Dare I say, it might have been the toughest week of fishing of the year…and maybe in many years of being down here! It was just STINKY for lack of a better word.

Early in the week, it seemed we had threats of rainstorms just about every day. Some days it would actually rain pretty hard for awhile. Other days, we got nothing but clouds. But, it surely kept us on alert and trying to figure if it would be better for our fishing clients to fish out’ve La Paz or Las Arenas.

Mostly, just to be on the safe side, we kept folks fishing with our Tailhunter La Paz fleet. Dorado were more-or-less ready, willing and able and everyone was hooking fish. Not alot of big ones, but fun sized 10-20 pounders with occasional 25-30 pounders plus some billfish.

When we did fish Las Arenas, there were rooster fish and enough 10 pound dorado to at least keep it interesting.

Later in the week, it seemed that the weather pretty much cleared up. We were pretty excited after watching clouds for so many days!

The conditions looked awesome. Sunny skies…dark moon…blue water…decent bait (at least more than we had before)…good currents…warm water…but WAIT!

NO FISH!

I don’t know what happened, but the latter part of the week it was almost like a dead ocean. Not only did the dorado go lock-jaw on us, but so did the bonito and even needlefish got scarce!

Many of our ace captains who NEVER get shut out were coming back with nothing or only 1 or 2 fish. Maybe one day that can happen, but 2, 3, 4 days in a row?

I don’t think I’ve ever seen that many days go dead on us. At least not that many consecutive days.

Hopefully, but the time you’re reading this, things will have turned on again! Any day now! But we have to keep an eye out…MORE RAIN IS PREDICTED THIS WEEK! NO HURRICANES BUT THUNDERSHOWERS PREDICTED!

Thanks to all the amigos who fished this week and kept the smiles. You’re all champs! Even when the fish weren’t biting, you kept at it and were all great sports!

This is the “OH NO” moment when your reel is screeching…your arms are aching…your rod is bent when you see the big monster 45-pound dorado and you realize you only have 30-pound equipment! Becky Csutoras took this great shot of her dad’s fish as it made that big jump. Yes, he did get the fish. See the tired angler below…he fought it for 45 minutes!

Don White always does well. He was just off Punta Perico with Captain Pancho when he tied into this baby blue marlin. Happily released! Check out the video below of the unceremonious, but successful release. The marlin was not complaining. Congrats to our amigo, Don, who visits from Oregeon each year!

Becky Csutoras, is normally travellng all over the country as an accountant, but she takes some time each year to get in some fishing with us at Tailhunters. She has to be one of the happiest fisher people we ever see. Every day is a “GREAT DAY!” Check our this fine dorado she caught off Las Arenas! She did well all week!

Start ’em young! Six-year-old Roman, gets a hand from his grandma, Kelly Jimenez, with a nice bull dorado standing on the beach at Bahia de Los Muertos. “Romo” had himself a great time all week helping grandma and grandpa to fish!

John Russell told me, “They fight harder than salmon!” He used to be a salmon fishing guide. Visiting us from Milpitas CA, he put the hurt on this colorful big bull dorado fishing near Espirito Santo Island north of La Paz. Great colors…big fish!

My old classmate from law school, Skip Coomber in the center with friends and family got out for a day even during the ugly cloudy weather and got a few dorado. Skips daughter, Amelia, in the gray t-shirt is with her girlfriends Haleigh and Isabella…all 3 girls on a last hurrah before staring their respective college careers in several weeks!

She never fails to get big fish! Oregon in the house, Debbie White in flat water with another big dorado on her scoreboard! Punta Arenas in the background. Each year, Debbie makes us the best homemade moonshine “Apple Pie” for our Oregon show.

John Gothie had just a few days to spend with us, but made the most of it with a nice wahoo plus some fun dorado while fishing with Captain Adolfo and our Tailhunter Las Arenas fleet.

Another youngster headed to college for the first time…Brian Russell will be headed to Arizona State in just a few weeks, but got his first striped marlin here with our Tailhunter Las Arenas fleet.

TROPICAL STORM DROPS SOME RAIN AND DAMPENS FISHING

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of June 30-July 6, 2014

Rain cells moving through the area and bringing a mix of some thundershowers, drizzle, wave surge and winds marred some of the fishing. Fortunately, it wasn’t a hurricane, but just some tropical storms. In most cases, the rain didn’t get anyone wet until the afternoons when the fishermen were already back and it really cooled things off, but it did rob sunshine from vacationers looking for more sunshine than we got this week.

It was very tropical. It could rain for 5 minutes or two hours. It could rain on one spot but then 200 yards away, it would be bone dry. An hour later, it would change again. Or not rain at all until the next day.

Again, the most cooperative species were the dorado. Both our Tailhunter Las Arenas fleet and our Tailhunter La Paz fleet had some good results that differed from day-to-day and boat-to-boat.

LAS ARENAS

At Las Arenas, there was again, no shortage of little firecracker 3-10 pound dorado. Some days, all you wanted. There were some billfish hooked and we did get a few wahoo and pargo. The big roosterfish are still around, but most of the focus has been on the bluewater species.

The week started OK, but then the skies would darken and each day, the winds and waters got a little rougher as we got the tail end of the storm and the periphery of the rain. At least, there wasn’t alot of wind, but it still wasn’t real comfortable towards the end of the week. We actually, had most of our fishermen move over to fish with our La Paz fleet where the fish were at least a big larger.

LA PAZ

For our Tailhunter La Paz fleet, the dorado were a bit bigger and went normally 10-30 pounds and were in areas scattered around Espirito Santo Island and the western side of Cerralvo Island. After the storm clouds moved off, waters went back to calm and flat pretty quickly. We did get some dorado up to the 40-pound class and other large ones lost. Billfish were also in the area with most fish getting released. Decent live caballitos for bait.

Keep an eye out. There’s alot of sealife out. Turtles…manta rays…whale sharks…blue whales were all seen this week! Water’s 85 degrees. Jump in!

According to the forecast, we’re gonna get a little more rain at times at least through next week. But, every day the forecast changes. As of writing this, there’s not a cloud in the sky and it’s brilliant sunshine and now they are saying no rain! Just come fish!

Long time amigo, Rick Kasper, went fishing with his son, Kasey and friend Mario from Texas and had a pretty good day with some nice dorado and a striped marlin they were unable to release after it swallowed the lure. Both marlin, sailfish and dorado were good bets this past week.

From Arizona, Jolly Jaeger and husband Dwight came down this week and took some of the nice bull dorado that have been showing up recently.

Johnny Enright brought grandson Dawson down for 3 days of fishing and show off a trophy dorado and some others on the rack. However, check out the big pompano also on the rack. It’s our first of the season!

Every year, Don and Debbie White from Oregon come spend a few weeks with us and always catch fish! This particular day, they not only got dorado you see here, but also caught and released a blue marlin estimated at about 120 pounds.

Garrett santana sailfish tags 6-14 small

Three years ago when he was 9 years-old, Garrett Santana came down to fish with us and got into some nice dorado. He came to visit us again this past week and not only caught a mess of dorado, but also put the wood to this huge sailfish all by himself and refused any help! Captain Raul helps out. Nicely done, youngster!

Rex Smith from Phoenix, Arizona has been visiting us for years. As usual, he caught lots of dorado, but over the years had never caught a pargo…until this past week! He took this tasty pargo mulato (barred pargo) fishing withour Tailhunter La Paz Fleet.

Our wine-making friends from Yakima, Washington, Chuck and Claudia Fiola had fun with the dorado and fishing with our Tailhunter La Paz fleet last week.

Our Captain Boli has a funny face for the camera, but it’s all smiles for Carson Vincent who had never gotten a dorado before and was brought down by dad to give it a go! Dad got some video of Carson pulling in the nice fish below. Check it out. Well done, Carson!

DORADO KEEP RODS BENT FOR THE WEEK RAIN ON THE WAY?

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of June 22-29, 2014

It wasn’t a bad week of fishing. It was a “mixed” week of fishing. Dorado surely did their part and kept everyone smiling, but things seemed to change from Las Arenas to La Paz and from day-to-day and indeed from one pangs-to-the-next!

TAILHUNTER LAS ARENAS FLEET

We sort of re-bounded from last week when fishing was sluggish and all we had were some more of those pesky mosquito-size dorado everywhere. It might have been a combination of lack of bait coupled with the fact that last week there were SOOOO many boats out there on the fishing grounds the fish just got lock jawed!

This week was much better. The biggest news was a splash of tuna…yes 15-40 pound yellowfin tuna that made their first appearance off Cerralvo Island and several boats got into them. Usually, these fish are moving too fast and no one can get into them, but we also had a school of 50 pounders that went crashing by some shocked fishermen at the north end of the island as well. So, the fish are around and hopefully, we’ll see more of them because in subsequent days, our recon trips to look for the school went for nothing.

However, the dorado were surely more cooperative. Some larger fish in the 20-40 pound class were taken, plus more billfish including some blue marlin we hooked and either lost or released.

Other species: cabrilla, jack crevalle, bonito, pargo, pompano…we had several wahoo bite off, but no fish boated

TAILHUNTER LA PAZ FLEET

Much better for quality and quantity this week for dorado. Fish ran 10-40 pounds and limits were common with many fish lost and many released. We do have live bait in the form of caballitos and mackerel, but a big error with the fishermen is not letting the dorado really chomp down on the baits and giving the dorado enough time to get the hooks in their mouths. These dorado are so voracious that even small dorado will charge baits that areas big as them making you wonder how they even get an 8 inch bait into their little mouths. But, they will hit it so you just have to be patient before pulling the trigger and setting the hooks.

The fish are around Espirito Santo Island and as close as right in La Paz Bay, but the larger fish are all the way around the corner around Las Cruces, El Rosario and Punta Gorda. It takes while to get there, but it’s worth it and the fish can be as close as just a few yards off the beach in the calm protected waters near those areas.

We are also getting some good bites on sailfish and marlin as well in the same areas.

OTHER SPECIES: Since everyone is concentrating on the blue water species like dorado, we’ve found some spots holding some BIG cabrilla and pargo that are willing to bite, but getting these beasts out’ve the rocks once you hook them is the trick and the fish usually wins!

WEATHER

Usually not much to say. It’s sunny today. It was sunny yesterday. It will be sunny tomorrow. Water about 84 degrees. Nights about 72. Yawn…

Seriously, it’s been a tad humid and in the mid 90’s, but this week the forecast is showing some afternoon thundershowers coming our way. Very tropical. I don’t think it will affect our fishermen very much and, as of the time of this writing, these are not hurricanes, but merely some rain cells moving our way. We’ll keep an eye out! Might actually be very refreshing!

Tiffany FLOYD could NOT have been a more fun person to come down to fish! I don’t think she ever stopped laughing or smiling and this big sailfish with Captain Joel put a big smile on her face. She was down celebrating her anniversary and she caught this just outside La Paz Bay!

OH the joy! This is just pure ecstasy! Mike Shepherd had a great week with us, but a big dorado eluded him all week. But at the last hour with almost his last bait on the last day, he finally put the wood to this nice bull dorado! Great facial expression, Mike! CLASSIC!

I think this should be their new 2014 Christmas card photo! The Nichols family run a big time fishing operation out’ve Florida and came down for a few days to visit. They all got and released their first roosterfish plus some nice dorado including this trophy bull that ended up for dinner at Tailhunter Restaurant!

Dennis Cudal knew this one was headed to the grill when he stuck this nice big barred pargo around Espirito Santo Island.

Check this off the bucket list! Nothing like an exotic roosterfish on the line! Jeff FLOYD from Idaho, was fishing with Captain Pancho literally just a few yards from the beach at Las Arenas and caught and released this big time rooster!

An extended Father’s Day Week plus graduation present for Craig and Ashley Sanford from the Phoenix AZ area where they show off quite a variety of fish they caught with our Tailhunter Las Arenas fleet including cabrilla, bonito, triggerfish and dorado!

Great story. Mike Shepherd was trolling a big bait in the shallow waters near Punta Perrico when his rod went off and all heck broke loose. He started yelling, “MARLIN! MARLIN!” Captain Jorge was tying up some lines and not looking and said, “There’s no marlin here!” Until he looked up! MIke had on a fish estimated at well over 200 pounds! Unfortunately, only 30 pound test so they hung on as best as they could while wife, Candi snapped photos! Folks ask all the time for “bigger boats” so they can go out further and catch “bigger fish!” Well, as you can see, we don’t have to go far and our pangas do just fine!

Our good amigo, Don Busse, always does well and he put this big pargo on board at Las Arenas and ended up bringing it to our Tailhunter Restaurant for dinner!

It was a good week for big barred pargo! Al Nojadera has been fishing with us for alot of years and shows off one of his big pargo.

Gary Pilkington is from Northern Cal and fished with Captain Pancho. Gary was on his 2nd visit with us and wanted to get a rooster! Mission accomplished with this caught-and-released trophy!

Luke Appel from Malibu took a nice picture and a great photo of this barred pargo in full raging colors! These are tough tough fish when hooked and fight like beasts!

This is our rockstar, Rick Kasper, who always gets fish with us. Rick has a place our there near La Paz now and spends several weeks hanging out and fishing!

ROOSTERS DORADO LIGHT IT UP WITH THE FULL MOON…AND ANOTHER MISSED HURRICANE!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of June 8-15 2014

Another fairly solid week of fishing even with the full moon…even with another hurricane missing us and blowing out to sea (Christina!)… but the difference between our anglers who fished with our Las Arenas fleet and those who fished with our La Paz fleet was like night and day…in a good way! Fortunately, for us, our clients get to fish both sides if they so choose!

For Las Arenas, at times, the winds plus the big swell generated by hurricane Cristina far to the south had to be contended with and made for some bouncy days, especially towards the end of the week. The hurricane was up to a category 4 with winds up to 170 mph, but thankfully banked out to the west before it got up to the Baja.

However, it still pushed residual winds and waves our way and up the Sea of Cortez. The surfers at Land’s End by Cabo and also around Todos Santos were loving the big waves with the thick lips!

But, at Las Arenas, we continued with swarms of little dorado. So many that some of the anglers are calling it “the nursery” where it was not uncommon to hook and release a dozen or more dorado in short order of fish no bigger than 3-5 pounds! Great light tackle action, but very few fish larger than that. The good thing is that the way dorado grow, in just a few months, these fish will be 15-20 pounders! So, it’s good that many are getting released.

The better action was on the wahoo, especially earlier in the week when that area south of Cerralvo Island kicked out another nice jag of 20-40 pound speedsters on trolled lures like the Rapala X-Raps and Yo-Zuri Magnums. For every fish taken, at least 2 more were lost so there’s some fish out there.

The other part of Las Arenas were the big roosters that seemed to pop up again with a vengeance. We had several days mid-week when, as one angler said, “Every bait thrown in the water generated an immediate hammer from a big rooster!” The fish this week were as “small” as 35-40 pounds, but we had some larger estimated in the 60-85 pound class (by the captains!).

For La Paz anglers, it was a completely different story altogether! The dorado were bigger. They were more abundant and they really bent rods and went 15-40 pounds with some larger ones lost. The bonus was the many of the best bites were literally right in La Paz Bay or just outside without having to go very far. As well, where the smaller dorado were found, marlin and sailfish were in the same areas either eating the same baits or else feeding on the small dorado themselves.

Dorado in winter? Yup! Jeff Burnham from Larkspur CO came down to wet some lines with us and stuck this nice bull fishing off Las Arenas. The nice mahi was taken just outside Bahia de Los Muertos!

Nothing wrong with this colorful bull dorado with big smiles and a great catch by our amigo, Larry Cornwall. Hard to believe getting this kind of fish in March!

Yes! There’s wahoo around Cerralvo Island right now, like this pair of speedy skinnies shown off by our Tailhunter Captain Jorge on the beach at Bahia de Los Muertos.

With Tailhunter captain Archangel checking the water for any “followers” as dorado will often do, Dennis McGuffee poses with another sweet mahi while fishing out’ve Bahia de Los Muertos. After this they came inshore and using light tackle played with numerous inshore species.

SPRING-LIKE CONDITIONS SET THE SCENE AND THE FISHING…UNTIL THE WEEKEND!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of March 9-16, 2014

As one of our anglers said, “It’s incredible. It’s like fishing in May down here right now!” And that about sums it up. “I come down and expect winter fishing and instead encounter dorado right in the bay!”

He has it pegged about right.

Unseasonably warm water has turned the fishing somewhat on it’s head. Normally, we’re getting yellowtail and sierra and other cool-water fish this time of year and instead we’ve run into a pretty steady jag of dorado up to about 20 pounds…flirted with shots of wahoo several times a week…caught the occasional tuna…and even hooked a few marlin! All fish, we don’t normally see until late spring and even early summer!

As well, there have been some surprising catches of amberjack in the 20-80 pound class to go with cabrilla (sea bass), pargo (snapper), sierra and bonito and the occasional yellowtail as well.

This past week, the highlight were probably the dorado that were free-swimming literally within yards of the beach at times. Some of these fish were respectable quality fish too with some decent bulls in the panga boxes. The fish ranged from Bahia de Los Muertos out to the buoys and around the island. They weren’t highly concentrated and it wasn’t a wide-open bite by any stretch, but the fact that the fish are even here this early and have been since January is remarkable. When we did run into the fish, our anglers were getting 2-4 fish per panga mixed with some of the other species.

But, just like they say in the commercials…”But wait!”

We also took a few wahoo off the island early in the week and some smaller roosterfish are starting to show as well. All good signs! Throw in a few sierra some action on the bonito and there was some OK action this week.

At least until the weekend hit. Mother Nature slammed us back with a reminder that March comes in like a lion and roared in with 30-40 mph winds more characteristic of this time of year! The high winds pretty much shut things down for the weekend. But, it’s going to be like that at times and we’ll just have to keep an eye out for this.

This was our 9th show of the season and now we wrap things up and head south once more to the Fred Hall Fishing show at the San Diego Co. Fairgrounds in Del Mar CA for our 10th and final show!

In a surprising bite the last few weeks, trophy roosterfish have shown up around the Las Arenas lighthouse which has been a real bonus to many of our anglers like Dan Hicks, our amigo from Seattle WA, who never expected to get a roosterfish this week, let alone a huge 50-60 pounder that he caught and released! Normally, we don’t see roosterfish this time of year, but lots of our anglers are finding the exotic fish lately.

You can never start them too young and Damon Davis, is the perfect dad to show his 5-year-old son, Caleb, how to do it, since Damon runs a sportfishing boat in Orange Co. CA and his dad is our amigo, James “Hawk” Davis an avid ace fisherman who lives in La Ventana near La Paz. Damon was out fishing near Las Arenas this past week and is shown on the beach with Caleb at Bahia de Los Muertos.

Marlin and sailfishing has been unusually good the past few weeks and it seems we hook several a day. About 90% are getting released or busting off…not surprising since we’re often fishing wit light tackle, but they’re still great fun. Leo Green from Washington got this striper while fishing with Captain Jorge of our Tailhunter Las Arenas fleet. The fish couldn’t be released but the meat was donated.

Good week for kids! And a great time for the family with all the school-sized dorado around right now. Clint Throop from Rockford Michigan wit his boy…6-year-old Christian pose with this fresh dorado fishing near Las Arenas. Another great Kodak moment that I”m sure Christian will always remember . Ed Hicks and Tiffany Isaacson were on their first trip fishing with us in La Paz. Tiffany wasn’t even sure she wanted to go fishing, let alone go to Mexico, but she’s convinced now. After a week of dorado fishing, she also got this nice sailfish off Cerralvo Island. Most of the meat was donated after it was not able to be released. Tiffany and Ed are from Washington.

From Oregon, Miles Brown, visits us every other year-or-so and always does well fishing with his dad, Rod. He shows off one of the school-sized dorado they caught off Cerralvo Island.

SOME RAIN AND WIND AS SEASONS CHANGE AND SEASON TAPERS BUT FISH STILL BITE NICELY!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Oct. 27-Nov. 3, 2014

We had another solid week of fishing with dorado again at center stage, but the biggest event would be probably be Mother Nature posting that the seasons are definitely changing. Northern winds, at times pretty strong, pretty much blew all week. That’s significant for several reasons.

Not only is is a harbinger of the changing seasons, but it also heralds cooler waters and a changing of the guard as far as fishing is concerned. They are a tad earlier than normal this year, but nevertheless, as they continue to blow and cool things down, the blue water pelagic species will start to move off and we’ll see more inshore species.

Therefore, fish like marlin, sailfish, and dorado, that have been our mainstays the past several months will be replaced by more inshore species like pargo, cabrilla, jack crevalle and sierra. Part of that, is also because it will be harder to get too far out away from shore anyway.

As the winds hit from the north, it can get downright wet and bumpy. That’s why we pretty much shut down our Tailhunter La Paz fleet mostly from December to March. Unless you want to get soaked and have your kidneys jarred, it’s just not worth it. It’s easier to have us shuttle you over to Bahia de Los Muertos and fish with our Las Arenas fleet where at least you’re somewhat protected and the fishing is closer.

However, this year, it looks like we’re closing down the La Paz side a bit earlier. This past week, even in La Paz Bay, the north winds had white-caps even in the bay! Plus we had rainstorm Raymond come through. Extremely late for a rainstorm, but we had one really good night of good rain. It didn’t affect the fishing and we still got out and got fish, but this is pretty late in the season to get a rainstorm although it did make for a nice cozy night to stay in and watch the rain in the bay from a seaside restaurant (At Tailhunters, we had a full load of folks watching football plus the rain outside and they enjoyed it!).

As, I said, we still got fish!

The dorado were still voracious most days with most of our pangs getting limits or near limits of fish…if that’s what they wanted. The dorado have been so prevailant that anglers would load up on more dorado than they wanted…even catching and releasing so many…that they would try for other species instead. So, the counts didn’t really reflect the reason some anglers didn’t get limits of dorado. It was because the anglers weren’t fishing for dorado.

Instead, the boxes and action were filled with other species…marlin and sailfish were still out. I’d have to say the billfish angling was good to excellent most days with, again many of the guys getting their first billfish caught and most released. As well, rooster fish up to 60 pounds were taken. Again, very unusual to see rooster fish this late in the season, but they’re there near the rocky and sandy areas close to shore at Las Arenas. A great opportunity for our some of our clients to check it off the bucket list and get one of these exotic fish.

As well, the counts also showed some nice cabrilla, sierra, jack crevalle, bonito, snapper and pargo! Some of this is because the seasons are changing, as mentioned above. But, also because anglers were making a point to chase these species because they were tired of dorado. Alot of the anglers simply changed to light tackle…like bass gear and had some fun catching-and-releasing dorado as fast as they could go!

Also, we had wahoo hooked almost every day. I say “hooked” because almost every one of them hooked got off! Just fishing! But, obviously the speedsters are still out there. Some of the hookups occurred while guys were fishing for dorado and the dorado where schooling around at the panga and a wahoo would zip in and pick up the bait. On light tackle or straight mono, it’s not much of a battle when a wahoo going 50-70 mph with razor sharp teeth grabs the bait! If the hooks isn’t set “just right” it’s a short battle!

WESTERN OUTDOOR NEWS TUNA JACKPOT 2013

If you’re in Cabo this week, that’s where we’re headed as well. The first week of November is always the popular crazy Western Outdoor News Tuna Jackpot one of the largest fishing tournaments in Cabo each year. Jill and I work the tournament which will take place from Wednesday to Saturday with the Wyndham Hotel as the anchor hotel. It’s always a blast with big fish a big parties! Both of us will be at registration on Wednesday and I will be working the scales while Jill is on the tournament central tent handling logistics. Kathy Terbu has made several trips to fish with Tailhunter over the years but she timed it right to get into the big dorado bite and was fishing with light tackle when this huge sailfish estimated at 140-160 pounds slammed into her line. She fought the fish for about 90 minutes. Most sailfish in our area are half this size. Attempts to release the fish were not successful and the meat was donated to several families.

Tracy Burns came down to fish a few days with her dad. She lives in Topanga Canyon CA and while fishing north of La Paz she put this big bull dorado in the boat along with a full limit of other mahi.

Fresh one! Vince Langgle from the San Diego Area, gaffs another big bull to put in the box. Dorado fishing this past week was as fast and furious as I have ever seen it. Maybe ever.

Dave “Mahi” Hill has been our amigo for many years and came all the way out from Texas to spend the with with us. He got 4 banner days of dorado fishing in with numerous fish caught and released.

The ladies had such a big week with us. Leslie Pilkington from Orangevale CA was on her first trip to fish with us in La Paz and had a successful outing with Captain Pancho and our Tailhunter Las Arenas fishing fleet.

It was a week full of school-sized dorado….all you could want. But there were still some big bulls mixed in like this beauty bull that might have been one of the largest of the week and caught by John Terbu from Utah. He’s on the beach at Balandra north of La Paz.

Another San Diego amigo, Chris Wellons, made the best of only two days of fishing with easy limits both day with this young bull dorado among many while on the beach at Bahia de Los Muertos.

Yes! There’s still roosterfish around. I haven’t posted up many photos the last few weeks because no one has been fishing for them. Everyone has been chasing all the pelagic species and ignoring the roosters. But there’s still some fish up on the beaches like Ted Kuhn’s 30 pounder. Ted’s from Arizona and he tried to release the fish but was unsuccessful. He also hooked a 40 pound class rooster as well.

If you fish with our Tailhunter Las Arenas fleet, this is how your morning starts…with fishing for giant squid like our amigo, Gary Pelkington . The squid make great bait but also setting some aside is a good idea for dinner!

MAYBE THE BEST DORADO BITE…EVER!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Sept. 22-29, 2013

The last two weeks may well have been the best dorado fishing we have seen in years around here in La Paz. Basically, ever since the last storm it was as if someone turned on a switch and the school-sized dorado either woke up or someone stirred up the nest and released a ha-zillion 10-20 pound dorado!

“We caught our first limit in less than an hour and then after that, we lost count of how many we released!”

“We only stopped the panga once and never moved for the next 3 hours. It was like being in a private trout pond except these were schools of dorado everywhere under the panga! It was crazy!”

“I’ve heard people joke about fish ‘jumping into the boat’ but the dorado were so thick they would actually bump in to the panga when they were charging the chum and I hooked one and it actually DID land in the panga. We had 3-5 dorado hooked up at any one time!”

“In the middle of the frenzy I felt this big slam in my back and thought it was my buddy slapping me, it was a small dorado that hit me in the back and fell back in the water!”

“It was like someone rang a dinner bell and these fish had never been fed but they heard there was a free meal! There were so many swarming in, around and under the panga!”

These are no exaggeration. For about the last 8 or 9 days, imagine 20…30…40 or more dorado per day! Anglers losing count of how many fish they caught and released. Fish, not even hooked, jumping all around the boats. Just jumping! Fish fighting each other to grab baits. Fish bumping the pangas and slamming into the gunwales. Fish hooked on hand lines. Fish eating bits of tortilla and grabbing bear hooks tossed into the water. Hooked fish getting knocked off the hooks by other fish chasing the hooked fish and the left-over bait getting picked up by another fish!

Just incredible dorado fishing unlike anything many of us have ever experienced.

My biggest worry is that we’ve had so many first-timers here and the think it is ALWAYS like this! The bar has been set awfully high!

On the light tackle and flyrod, these dorado have been spectacular!

Between our Las Arenas and La Paz fleets, the bite has been epic. If there was a distinction this week, it was that there were MORE fish at Las Arenas and a bit fewer fish out’ve La Paz, but bigger fish. Most of the Las Arenas fish were 8-17 pounds. The La Paz fish tended to be 10-35 pounders, just not quite as many!

As for other action, there’s been a far number of billfish hookups as sailfish and marlin cruise through the schools of dorado also eating the chum or baits or simply eating the many dorado. In the same areas, we also found wahoo again, although those hookups don’t usually last long. Finally ,contrary to the belief of many, there’s still roosterfish in the areas as we hooked several 30-40 pound fish along the beaches. No tuna to speak of except way way outside of Cerralvo Island. Waters might be getting cooler as we’re seeing a few sierra in the fishing mix. But, really hard to tell about other species since everyone has been chasing this mad dorado bite.

Panga sunrise braswell group 9-13 tags-proc

We could not have asked for better weather and fishing conditions this week with the end result being solid fishing action for both our Tailhunter Las Arenas and our Tailhunter La Paz fleets. Nothing quite like a beautiful sunrise on the Sea of Cortez and getting ready to head out for fishing at Las Arenas.

Photos just don’t do justice to the magnificence of our dorado. With incredible colors and acrobatic battles, they’re hard to beat as a sportfish! Ed Vander Veer, from Washington, has already made two trips to visit us this year and loves fishing ultra light tackle taking great fish like this one off Cerralvo Island.

It’s always great to have first-timers and getting them into the fish. Kurt Dittig, from Sacramento, was on his first trip to visit us in La Paz and spent 3 days ripping on the dorado including this 30-pound class bull taken north of La Paz.

It’s a long way from Wisconsin, but Dan Brown, was another of our first-timers this past week and shows off a fresh bull dorado while standing in our panga. He’s just outside the mouth of Bahia de Los Muertos.

She always does so well. Our amiga, Mary Heilman Vander Veer, never fails to put fish in the boat and she usually does it with light tackle. This big bull was no exception. Mary was with us for a whole week and poses with the fish on the beach at Bahia de Los Muertos.

Big smiles from Mike McArthur who came in from Los Angeles to squeeze in two quick days of fishing getting into the dorado fishing and added this bull to the rack from Las Arenas.

I”m getting lots of questions about the giant squid. Yes, we’re still getting them. They’ve been around for about 4 weeks and we catch them early in the morning as we head out. They’re fighters! But, they do make great bait, but also, folks forget that giant squid is the same as calamari! So, often they bring it back to our Tailhunter Restaurant to have us fix it up. This one is headed for some marinated calamari salad and some fried calamari plates. I’ve photographed it next to a soda can and my kitchen knife. It’s important to treat the squid meat correctly or it will come out tasting bitter.

DORADO CHARGE THE PANGAS ALL WEEK!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Aug. 8-15, 2013

Overall, we probably could not have asked for better conditions this past week. We had a few showers like the previous weeks, but nothing to keep folks off the waters and generally, the winds were kind to us as well with just some early morning and late afternoon breezes.

The good conditions made for some really excellent dorado fishing for both our Tailhunter Las Arenas as well as our Tailhunter La Paz fleets. Here and there an occasional boat might have had an off-day, but mostly speaking, most of our amigos fish several days and one slow day was usually compensated by 1 or 2 outstanding days where the fish attacked the pangas and guys more than made up for the off-day and in some cases were catching and releasing as fast as they could go.

No really big big fish this week, but our larger fish were in the 30-pound class with some occasional 40’s and, of course, large fish have a tendency to bust off too! That’s part of fishing and that’s why they’re bigger fish! But, lots of medium 10-25 pounders all week. Let me put it this way. Everyone who wanted a cooler of fish to take home or a day of bending rods got it!

The really cool thing the past few weeks is that we have had so many first timers…couples…wives…girlfriends…kids…and watching them get into these fish and then listening to the animated stories are just the best! But, in addition, they’re also experiencing stuff like whales and dolphin and sea turtles and manta rays as well plus just the overall experience of being in Baja and La Paz for the first time! Many of them bring their catches to our restaurant as well so they’re getting to enjoy their fish twice in the same day!

As for other species, there’s still marlin and sailfish around and we’re getting a hook-up or two a day. Most fish are getting busted off or released. I’d say we’re probably releasing about 90% of the billfish that make it to the boat. There’s also still a few rooster fish around, plus big jack crevalle and huge arm-tiring bonito that are beating up on the anglers. As well, we are still hooking a few wahoo but not many are making it to the boats before they get busted off!

Plus, there’s still giant squid to start the day also. Many anglers are using part of them for bait and eating the rest!

Compared to other years, this has been a banner wahoo season! Kelly SooHoo, from Pasadena CA was on her first fishing trip…on her first trip to Mexico…and first time on the ocean…and she bags a prized wahoo! She was fishing with Captain Armando off Cerralvo Island.

Good as it gets! Double trophys fish for Jim and Dan Bovee from San Diego who came back to the beach at Bahia de Los Muertos with a big dog-tooth snapper and hefty bull dorado!

Our Washington amigo, Ed Vander Veer, has fished with us many times and this was his 2nd trip of 2013. But, he had never caught a wahoo. This week he was in the thick of a dorado bite fishing with Captain Chito out’ve our Tailhunter La Paz fleet when the rod goes off. He thought it might be a dorado at first, but then a tuna. As the fish got close to the boat…SURPRISE…a wahoo…on bait and with no wire! Meant to happen! Great catch!

With the rains just about to hit in the background, Mike McArthur, from Los Angeles, still put a limit of dorado in the panga in short order and made it back in time! Check out the colors on this fresh one!

Our kinda family! Scott McKenzie and sisters Jana and Loren visit us yearly and the gals fish hardcore and are as competitive as Scott when it comes to fishing. They fished 5 straight days and pose here with some of their dorado from one day with our Tailhunter La Paz fleet.

ANOTHER STORM PASSES THRU BUT FISH DON’T MIND GETTING WET! BITE ON!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Sept. 1-8, 2013

We got another surprise storm this week with Tropical Storm Lorena suddenly rearing up and dropping some wind and rain on us. This is the 3rd week that we’ve gotten a surprise shower or two.

However, like the other weeks, it didn’t bother the fishing! The fish don’t mind getting wet and here in La Paz, it wasn’t that bad. The rains mostly showed up at night and, although it rained hard here and there, the rain was mostly gone by daytime. The biggest factor is wind when these storms hit and as long as the winds aren’t tossing the waves around and it’s safe to get out, we’re still out there fishing, although we know of several operations that canceled their boats.

That being said, the fish continued to check quite nicely!

Both our Tailhunter Las Arenas Fleet and our Tailhunter La Paz fleet did mostly limits of dorado each day. If I had to tell you what the difference was, in La Paz, there were much more fish. They were eager and the fish were almost right in La Paz Bay. We didn’t have to go very far. This was great, especially on those days when cloudbursts threatened. So, everyone got fish!

At Las Arenas, the fish weren’t as plentiful, although fishing was good. But the fish were generally larger than the fish at La Paz.

So, if you wanted fast and furious action with double and triple hookups, our La Paz fleet was better If you were out to maybe get larger dorado, then our Las Arenas fleet was the better choice. Since most of our clients fish a few days on each side, everyone was able to pack their ice chests with filets!

In addtion to dorado there were again some nice wahoo hooked although many were lost. Often, the wahoo showed up right where the dorado were feeding and made short work of light live bait lines! However, a few were hooked “just right” on the light tackle and made it to the pangas with much high-fiving and knuckle-bumping!

As well, we stuck a few marlin and sailfish with most of them getting released plus rooster fish, jack crevalle and some huge bonito!

The surprise fish were the pargo that we were hooking including some big dog-tooth snapper and mullet snapper that we usually only see in the spring, plus also some sierra which are really rare this time of year since we only get those during the cooler months. That leads me to believe waters might be cooling already for the season. We’ll keep you posted!

Not bad for a quick morning of fishing! TV Show host and actor, Rick Kasper from California and his amigo, Scott Behnken, all the way from Ohio on his first-ever Baja fishing trip knocked out the yellowfin tuna off Las Arenas. Hopefully, the tuna season is going to kick into gear full turbo soon! It’s that time of the year. To see more of Rick and Scott, check out this week’s video clip below!

The tuna were elusive this week, but the one day that Joe Fuschetti fished Las Arenas he found the tuna more than willing to go in a hot spot between the east side of Cerralvo Island and the 88 spot hammering nice-grade tuna like this one and back on the beach before noon. The next day, the same spot produced only a few small tuna and lots of bonito. Joe is a high school coach in Orange Co. , California and has fished with us many times over the years. He told me, “This was the best tuna fishing ever and my personal best tuna!”

Everytime they visit us, Jana and Lauren often outfish the guys. They come once-a-year with brother Scott McKenzie who fishes with us several times a year from Washington. The ladies fish every single day non-stop hardcore and next year want a full-week of fishing! Here, they pose with some of the dorado they caught fishing north of La Paz.

What a great shot of a leaping striped marlin! Dan Puetz had just had full shoulder re-constructive surgery and was still nursing it but ended up with two days of pulling on fish like this one. Sore, but happy! Another shot of Dan below with one of his dorado.

Dan was supposed to fish 3 days with us, but after two solid days of pulling on dorado and marlin, he laughingly decided to put up his feet and take it easy! Here’s one of the dorado he put in the boat posed at Balandra Bay.

They have been so few and far between this year, but Joe Arata of Pacifica CA got one of the much-sought-after wahoo near Cerralvo Island this past week. All year, I think we’ve only boated about 10 wahoo. Where are they? Our divers are seeing them way way down below the thermocline. Perhaps like last year, they’re just not coming up to the surface to feed. Fingers crossed. The fall is usually prime time for the skinnies!

Our BFF from La Ventana, James “Hawk” Davis gets in the report this week showing off a slug roosterfish he slammed and then released. The big pez gallos are still out there although now that there’s sardines around, more folks are out chasing dorado and tuna. This is the type of roosterfish that made the Las Arenas/ Cerralvo Area famous!

Virgil Bascos was with us for his first trip to La Paz. He was looking for tuna and didn’t do so well, the the billfish and dorado were very cooperative as she shows off one of his dorado caught with our Tailhunter Las Arenas fleet.

No matter the age, it’s always great to have father-son trips! Two of the funniest guys we’ve had were Paul Zech and son, Mike, who fished 3 days with our Tailhunter La Paz fleet and stocked up on nice dorado like this one.

This lady not only like to fish…she CAN fish! Pam Sharp spent a week in our waters and blew up all kinds of fish like this trophy roosterfish off Cerralvo Island. Fish was released.

Roger Thompson has been in our fishing report so often, he’s a virtual poster-child. He makes the report again with another big rooster caught and released plus his classic fishing pose! Thanks, Roger!

UNEVEN FISHING BUT RODS STILL BEND ON DORADO WITH TUNA STILL TEASING!

La Paz/ Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Aug. 5-12, 2012

Every day fishing this past week was at best…a surprise! I don’t want to go so far as to say it was anemic, but maybe “inconsistent” was a better word. I guess if you wanted to fill the ice chest, dorado continued to be solid for our anglers that fished with our La Paz fleet.

But, even for our La Paz anglers, it could be frustratingly good and bad. One day you could hammer limits and crazy good fishing and fill the fish box with dorado between 10 and 50 pounds. The next day..same spot…same captain….same good bait…seemingly similar conditions would produce 2 fish! With no rhyme or reason! Fortunately, most folks fished a number of day so the good days more than made up for the off-days! Besides the dorado there were still the occasional marlin, sailfish, roosterfish, pargo or cabrilla to round things out.

For our Las Arenas anglers, it was perhaps even more frustrating. Lots of finger-pointing at the yellow-“fun” tuna! They were the source of more teeth gnashing than any other fish this week.

Several days they came up live mad dogs! Boats plugged with fish and back on the beach before noon with no more energy or space for any more tuna. Fish from 10-50 pounds were boiling around boats in several spots near the south and east sides of Cerralvo Island. Everyone would go crazy. The next day…NOTHING! Maybe a bunch of bonito but the tuna were nowhere to be found!

On the plus-side…there were some nicer dorado if you chose not to chase the tuna and there were also our usual slugger-sized roosterfish up to 65 pounds this week.
