Kris Honkola from San Rafael CA was a first-time visitor with Tailhunter and set out to get a wahoo with us. On his very first day he tagged up this big-headed speedster south of Cerralvo Island.

Cathy Corda, here with husband Craig, had a pretty fantastic day. Not only did they get into the dorado school big-time, but Cathy got her first wahoo. What makes it more remarkable is that the fish bent out the hook and when they got it aboard…THE FISH WAS NOT HOOKED! The line made a half-hitch loop around the tail and had lassoed the fish! Great story!

Our long-time amigos from the San Francisco Bay area, Bill Lee and John McLucas had a week’s-worth of good fishing with our Las Arenas fleet. Here’s a sample of dorado, cabrilla and a rainbow runner.

It was a pretty good week for billfish…marlin and sailfish with a remarkable number of hookups! Most caught fish were released. Alexa Kadota took these spectacular photos right close to shore as her dad’s sailfish fought close to the panga.

Our new amiga from Utah, Janie Edge and her husband, Randy were fishing with Captain Victor and did pretty good on some schoolie dorado.

Nothing like a vacation with dad and getting pulled outta school! John Rogers from San Ramon, CA, took his boys, Jared and Jay out for a few days fishing with us and show off some of their dorado they caught north of La Paz around Espirito Santo Island.

These two brothers had to be some of the funniest guys all week…Andy and Rafi Montejano pose with a big pargo and cabrilla which we saw more of this week as the weather and conditions change.

You can tell waters are getting a little cooler because we don’t normally get pompano except in the springtime. However, our amigo John Ehlers from the Denver CO area, got this tasty pompano just off Bahia de los Muertos with Captain Pancho.

SEASONS CHANGING AND GETTNG COOLER BRINGING DIFFERENT FISH VARIETY:

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Oct. 20-27, 2014

We could not be asking for better conditions right now these last two weeks or so. Air temperatures have dropped significantly down to the low to mid-90’s. The humidity is gone so it’s just great sunshine. Water temps are still in the mid-80’s. And, although winds seem to be gradually increasing, there’s just a hint of perfect breeze each day. Barely a cloud in the sky. Nights are ideal and in the 70’s. If you’re walking around La Paz, it’s like being in a post card.

Basically, I think it means conditions are changing. They’re moving from the warmer summer days now tapering into our late fall bite.

Fishing has been OK to good for the most part. Not spectacular, but there were some nice highlights. I think we’re in transition now for the seasons. However, for most anglers fishing a few days, everyone is getting fish. There’s some nice highlights and bonus, and some days when the dorado go crazy but then there’s others when the bite drops off and gets a little more picky. Like I said, things are transitioning.

Dorado are still our mainstay with fish in the 10-20 pound class mostly. Some larger. Quite few smaller. Great fun on light tackle. Most of the larger fish have been lost, but we have seen some in the 40 pound category come and go…and keep going! But, dorado make up about 70% of our bite. But the fish seem more scattered and wide-ranging. There are still some concentrated schools, but they seem to be breaking up and moving quite a bit. One day we find the spots and other days it’s hunt-and-peck. It changes almost daily.

However, that’s been rounded out with a pretty nice bite on billfish. Striped marlin are around as well as blue and black marlin. But, the big surprise have been the number of sailfish around. We had some days when there were multiple hook-ups on our pangas. One day one of our pangas hooked 4 and were able to release 3. Another released 2. Several others released 1’s and 2’s and numerous other billfish have been seen feeding on bait or in the middle of the bonito and dorado schools. We had two large blue marlin hooked and dropped during the week.

The variety this time of year has been increasing as well. In addition to the billfish and dorado, wahoo keep popping up near Espirito Santo Island and inshore, we’re getting more pargo, cabrilla, red snapper, and even some sierra which is a sure indication that waters are cooling a bit. Additionally, we’re getting rainbow runners, lots of bonito, jack crevalle and still finding some school-sized rooster fish along the beaches. Not alot of big fish, but … Lots of great action!

Jill is spearheading the drive and collected several HUNDRED pounds of goods each week. Above are JUST SOME OF THE PHOTOS of our friends with the big hearts. I’ll keep posting them as space allows. But, you can see what’s coming in…clothes, shoes..toiletries…school supplies..first aid items…

Hope you got to see it! It was pretty amazing to watch the moon go dark…then go red! It was already a HUGE full moon this week ,but extremely amazing to watch the “BLOOD MOON” eclipse! Unfortunately, combined with other factors, it might have had an affect on the fishing this past week…dangit.

Captain Boli from our Tailhunter La Paz fleet helps out young Peter Koschnitzke from snowy Colorado who earned himself a cigar and a beer from dad for nailing this slugger-sized yellowtail near Espirito Santo Island. I was told it tasted great with manga salsa!

Pargo were a good bet this week, but putting these tough good-eaters in the boat required some luck and skill as some of our anglers will tell you as they head straight back into the rockpiles! Tim Butterworth hung this fat hog north of La Paz on live bait.

With the warmer waters, we’re already seeing some billfish around Cerralvo Island and Las Arenas. Nothing full turbo yet, by any means, but promising! This hundred-pounder was hooked and released out by the buoys east of Bahia de los Muertos.

The latest satellite shot from http://www.terrafin.com shows the heavy bodies of warm water around Cerralvo Island while cooler waters still hold north of La Paz city.

BLOOD MOON WHAMMY? TOUGH WEEK OF FISHING

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of April 13-20, 2014

Hope everyone had a safe and happy Easter week and weekend!

Well…

Not the best of weeks down here. Kinda wacky actually.

It’s really hard to put a finger on what happened. It was sort of a convergence of a lot of things that could have affected the fishing…a variable here and a variable there could have made the difference.

But, fishing was really down! It doesn’t happen often. The track record here…like any other fishing destination that has a reputation…is that sure…you get the down day now and again. But it usually bounces back pretty fast.

Well, this week we had several days that were either bad or at best…ho-hum…

But, here’s how the planets lined up that could have made a difference. Any single one or two of these items usually makes no difference, but perhaps all of them converging at the same time? I dunno. Take a look. All I know is that fishing was off.

1. Stronger than normal winds…even for this time of year when it can get breezy. This week we had some white-cap days!

2. Waters got a little cooler…not warmer as has been the trend. Maybe caused by the stronger winds! Fish get lock-jawed when water temps change drastically…especially for the cooler.

3. Strong winds make it harder to get bait as the shallow areas where we get bait are spanked with waves and the bait scatters or we can’t get up close to the rocks to throw nets.

4. Combination of #2 and #1 meant clouded green and off-color waters…again affecting fish activity and feeding

5. THE MOON! I hardly ever blame things on a full-moon, but in combination with the other factors PLUS it was not only full, but did you see the RED MOON ECLIPSE??? The moon was not only larger than normal, but it eclipsed to dark…then went almost dirty red! Here in La Paz everyone was out taking photos with their cell phones in the dark. It was pretty funny to see “photos flashes” going off! (Oh sure…that flash reaches up to the moon!). But, maybe…just maybe the fish freaked out too!

Anyway, by the time you’re reading this, the full moon will have waned and hopefully the rest of these things will have settled back to normal. Either way, a weird week.

That being said, it was still sunny most days…although we had some weird cloudy days when I thought it would rain. But day temps are usually in the high 80’s to low 90’s and pretty pleasant.

And, we still managed a few fish here and there. For our La Paz anglers, yellowtail up to about 30 pounds were found around Espirito Santo Island as well as some sizable barred pargo and some dorado in the 20 pound class.

For our Las Arenas anglers, it was picky. Some dorado up to about 15 pounds. Some big bonito. Some snapper and pargo and a few rooster fish (released) plus some sierra along the beaches.

Still better than working, but the fishing honestly could have been better and hopefully is back on track by the time you’re reading this!

IGFA record holder, representative, author and journalist, Gary Graham, will also be on hand.

Big smile for Miles! First timer to fish with us in La Paz, Miles, Brown spent the week getting some yellowtail, pargo, dorado (see below) and this nice roosterfish that he released with some help with the pose from Captain Jorge of the Tailhunter fleet. Nice to see the roosters have come in!

From Idaho taking a break from teaching school, Mandy Pollock let’s Tailhunter Capt. Boli struggle with this big yellowtail from the north side of La Paz. Still a few yellowtail around and this was Mandy’s first trip to La Paz.

Jeff has fished with us many times over the years, all the way from Minnesota! He had a good week on a variety of fish while he vacationed with his brothers including this trophy roosterfish they got off Las Arenas that was photo’d and quickly released!

Hard to believe such nice dorado are in the neighborhood, but they’ve been a welcome surprise like this nice bull taken by Miles Brown just outside of Bahia de Los Muertos. Great eating! Folks ask all the time if it’s good on the plate and then I tell them it’s “mahi mahi” on the restaurant menus!

Rod Brown from Wrangell, Alaska is one of our Tailhunter amigos who has fished with us several times a year for many years. He always does well. On this particular day they caught and released several nice roosters right off the beach at Las Arenas which can be seen nearby in the background.

SPRING TIME BITE HOLDS VARIETY THIS WEEK

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of March 30-April 6, 2014

This past week was a bit more typical of the kind of fishing we get during the spring time. With air temps in the low to mid-80’s with great sunshine and cooler evenings and water temperatures in the high 70’s, the bite reflected the normal transitional bite we see this time of the year.

We still got some breezy days that put some bump out there, but most days were not bad. Inshore fishing showed up with the usual characters. Some sierra, pargo and cabrilla were among this in the rocky reef and sandy areas. A few straggler yellowtail are here and there, but largely, with the waters a bit warmer than normal, our usual yellowtail numbers are down from normal.

The best news was that we finally got into rooster fish…basically, the fish that put our Las Arenas area on the fishing map as the “rooster fish capital of the world.” The world record 114 pound rooster fish was caught on these white-sand beaches and last year, we had one of the most spectacular rooster fish seasons in all our years down here. Last year, our “average” rooster was 40-90 pounds and we had a number fish over 100 pounds and one fish that was released that many estimated would have been close to 150-pounds and shatter the world record.

This past week, using live bait, we finally tied into some of these exotic fish with some fish rolling right around 20-40 pounds…all released, but encouraging that the fish are in place and willing to bite. We’ll have to keep an eye out on this, but so far pretty good news.

With other species, we’re still hitting the dorado as well which have really become our bread-and-butter these past few months. As waters warmed faster than normal, the dorado sort of either came in early or else never left us from last season. The fish we’re getting now are generally not schoolie-fish, but more like free swimmer solo or small group fish. However, there’s some respectable fish. Most are about 10 pounders, but there’s some 15-25 pounders around as well.

WANT A WORLD RECORD? TAILHUNTERS IS OFFICIAL NEW IGFA WEIGH STATION

Released fish can now be submitted to the IGFA for world record status! We plan to go after a few this year. As well, our Tailhunter offices on the La Paz malecon also had a certified scale for conventionally caught fish that can be submitted for all-tackle and line-class world records.

Jacques Cousteau called the Sea of Cortez the “Aquarium of the World” and with more than 700 known species of fish and more being discovered yearly, it’s easy to see why. The area around La Paz is considered one of the best light tackle fisheries on the planet and arguably more world records have been set in the surrounding waters than few other places!

So, Tailhunter Sportfishing is jazzed to announce that we’re an official International Fish and Game Association (IGFA) weigh station. We have a certified scale at our headquarter offices on the La Paz waterfront and within a few months will have handheld certified scales for the beaches as well.

Even moreso, we’re excited about the fact that the IGFA now certifies fish that are caught and released! This is great news creating more opportunities to be a world record holder. To that end, we’ve now got official “release scales” that can be brought out on one of our pangas for folks looking to catch-and-release a world record! An official IGFA measuring scale MUST be used to measure and release the fish.

Additionally, given that Las Arenas is considered the roosterfish capital of the world, Tailhunter Sportfishing is now a member of the ROOSTERFISH FOUNDATION and we’ve ordered a number of tagging guns so that released roosters can now be tagged and recorded to hopefully proliferate the resource. We will hopefully have some of these devices in the next few weeks.

All of this is great news because our “LA PAZ PANGA SLAM” being held June 17-21 and sponsored by Western Outdoor News has now turned into a great opportunity to go after some of these world release records as well as hopefully having the first official “tag and release” roosterfish event! There are many categories that can be attained…especially for kids and women and line class records are always a possibility as well. Last year, we had 4 potential world record fish caught by our clients!

Pancho & Cheyenne with her 45 lb Roosterfish tags 1-14

We had some surprise roosterfish this week like this one that Cheyenne Wenholz took what we estimated to be about 45 pounds… a big fish for the 13-year-old first timer from Aurora, Colorado! It’s a big fish for anyone. A nice trophy! And best of all…she released it! But she did it all by herself just off Punta Perrico with only some help from our Captain Pancho to take the photo!

Another surprise biter this week! Who would have thought we’d bee seeing a rack of dorado like this on the beach after a day of fishing…IN JANUARY! But, late in the week schools of 10-15 pound mahi went on the chew!

The whales have officially arrived now in Bahia Magdalena and it’s a great time to see these great animals in the warm shallow waters of the bay where they’ll usually remain until mid-March or so! It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience and Tailhunters is now running it’s daily trips out to see them!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Jan. 12-19, 2014

It was not the best week for fishing this past week. Well, maybe the fishing would have been better if it hadn’t been windy! It was pretty stiff this past week so fortunately, we didn’t have too many anglers and those we had, we were able to have them put off their fishing until it got calmer.

And it did!

As the week wound down, the winds diminished and we were able to get out. I told the anglers that most likely with the cooler temps and off-color water, they would find some action with maybe some bonito…some snapper…maybe some sierra.

Indeed, they did get those species which are typical of this time of year in the winter. However, again, with the surprises! We got into dorado again! I have no idea why dorado would still be hanging out, but some really fun 10-15 pound school-sized fish showed up and were a real treat. Close to shore and willing to eat! This is pretty unusual to be getting dorado this time of year, but no one complained!

As well, I guess we still have rooster fish in the area also! It’s again normally a fish we don’t see in January, but such a popular exotic fish that everyone wants to try for one. So when they do happen to pop up, it’s a bonus. We hooked and released several 30-40 pound fish off Punta Perico. Also, heads-up…some of the commercial guys are starting to get some yellowtail! Maybe the big jurel are finally here. Will keep you posted!

TAILHUNTER TOUR WRAPS UP DENVER…NOW HEADED TO WASHINGTON!

He’s a star! Young Grayson (“G-man”) Richmond from Evergreen, Colorado poses with me in our booth at the Denver ISE show! Grayson came down to fish with us in La Paz this past season and just tore it up! He even made the cover of our latest Tailhunter brochure!

Just finished tearing down the booth at the Denver Convention Center where we had a blast visiting with all our old amigos and making new ones every day! It was a great show and we got lots of folks signing up for their 2014 fishing vacations with us and we’re really looking forward to the visits!

So, now we’re on the road again. And this week, we’ll be hitting the Puyallup Fairgrounds in Washington just outside Seattle for the Washington Sportsmens Show that starts Wednesday and goes to Sunday January 22-26th. The show is ALWAYS packed and it’s our first show of the year in the Pacific Northwest. Come say hi and check out our new 2014 brochure.
