Pancho & Cheyenne with her 45 lb Roosterfish tags 1-14

We had some surprise roosterfish this week like this one that Cheyenne Wenholz took what we estimated to be about 45 pounds… a big fish for the 13-year-old first timer from Aurora, Colorado! It’s a big fish for anyone. A nice trophy! And best of all…she released it! But she did it all by herself just off Punta Perrico with only some help from our Captain Pancho to take the photo!

Another surprise biter this week! Who would have thought we’d bee seeing a rack of dorado like this on the beach after a day of fishing…IN JANUARY! But, late in the week schools of 10-15 pound mahi went on the chew!

The whales have officially arrived now in Bahia Magdalena and it’s a great time to see these great animals in the warm shallow waters of the bay where they’ll usually remain until mid-March or so! It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience and Tailhunters is now running it’s daily trips out to see them!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Jan. 12-19, 2014

It was not the best week for fishing this past week. Well, maybe the fishing would have been better if it hadn’t been windy! It was pretty stiff this past week so fortunately, we didn’t have too many anglers and those we had, we were able to have them put off their fishing until it got calmer.

And it did!

As the week wound down, the winds diminished and we were able to get out. I told the anglers that most likely with the cooler temps and off-color water, they would find some action with maybe some bonito…some snapper…maybe some sierra.

Indeed, they did get those species which are typical of this time of year in the winter. However, again, with the surprises! We got into dorado again! I have no idea why dorado would still be hanging out, but some really fun 10-15 pound school-sized fish showed up and were a real treat. Close to shore and willing to eat! This is pretty unusual to be getting dorado this time of year, but no one complained!

As well, I guess we still have rooster fish in the area also! It’s again normally a fish we don’t see in January, but such a popular exotic fish that everyone wants to try for one. So when they do happen to pop up, it’s a bonus. We hooked and released several 30-40 pound fish off Punta Perico. Also, heads-up…some of the commercial guys are starting to get some yellowtail! Maybe the big jurel are finally here. Will keep you posted!

TAILHUNTER TOUR WRAPS UP DENVER…NOW HEADED TO WASHINGTON!

He’s a star! Young Grayson (“G-man”) Richmond from Evergreen, Colorado poses with me in our booth at the Denver ISE show! Grayson came down to fish with us in La Paz this past season and just tore it up! He even made the cover of our latest Tailhunter brochure!

Just finished tearing down the booth at the Denver Convention Center where we had a blast visiting with all our old amigos and making new ones every day! It was a great show and we got lots of folks signing up for their 2014 fishing vacations with us and we’re really looking forward to the visits!

So, now we’re on the road again. And this week, we’ll be hitting the Puyallup Fairgrounds in Washington just outside Seattle for the Washington Sportsmens Show that starts Wednesday and goes to Sunday January 22-26th. The show is ALWAYS packed and it’s our first show of the year in the Pacific Northwest. Come say hi and check out our new 2014 brochure. It was another surprising week of marlin running around our waters despite the fact that it’s WINTER! Usually, we stop seeing billfish around the end of October or so, but this year, they’ve been thick, hungry and willing to bite! Verda Boyd, our amiga from the Bay Area near San Francisco, always rocks the fish and go this one with Captain Jorge just outside of Bahia de Los Muertos. Unfortunately, they were not able to revive this fish, but most of the billfish are getting released.

Another of the bluewater surprises this late in the season is the continued presence of dorado. Not big ones, but fun-sized school fish around 10-20 pounds like this one that Llew Williams caught with Captain Pancho off Las Arenas.

WINDIER CONDITIONS BUT GOOD VARIETY OF FISH!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Dec. 15-22, 2013

Lots of variety this past week. After the stellar fishing we’ve had the past few weeks that surprised many of us, this week seemed to be a little more typical of what winter fishing is like in La Paz. It was breezy and a bit chilly even tho’ the sun was out most of the time. It was a tad choppy as well. All typical winter weather when fishing this time of year.

However, the fishing had a really good mix of species with perhaps a bit more inshore fish than we had been getting which included nice bunches of sierra and cabrilla as well as bonito. However, the nice surprise again was the showing of striped marlin and other blue water species that we don’t usually see this time of year.

The marlin were respectable 90-130 pound fish and almost all were released (except a two that couldn’t be revived) but a real treat given that they were taken close to shore and most on light tackle. But sometimes, the marlin were…for lack of a better word…”PESTS!” Anglers either had caught and released a marlin or two or had no interest in marlin and wanted to catch something else and, as one angler laughing told me, “The marlin wouldn’t leave us alone! It was like they followed the panga around!”

As well, we still have schools of 8-20 pound dorado cruising nearby and we had a few bites on wahoo once again although most bites were lost. As well, we can’t discount that there are still nice trophy rooster fish up on the beach areas and in the shallows that are running 15-40 pounds and all getting released. All-in-all, not bad as we head into the first week of winter and the Christmas week!

Tim Zimmer and a jubilant Captain Jorge of our Tailhunter Las Arenas fleet, hoist up this beefy wahoo off the south end of Cerralvo Island in the early morning. Great way to start the day and more evidence of the great blue water fish we’re still experiencing this past week!

Can you tell it’s winter in La Paz? Our Florida, amigo, Llew Williams, has been fishing with us for many years and came to fish with us in December this time. Never expecting to catch dorado, wahoo and this big trophy rooster he’s trying t cradle so he can take a photo and release it. That’s Punta Perrico and the old Hotel Las Arenas in the distance.

Captain Gerardo is a big big fella so his size somewhat dwarfs Julie Gragg and here nice wahoo she caught on her first time fishing and visiting La Paz!

I think this is Verda’s 3rd time fishing with us this year. She’s a gangbuster angler from the East Bay of San Francisco and shows off a nice rack of sierra, a dorado and a cabrila. She also got a marlin as well.

COOLER WEATHER WITH WARM WATER FISH!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Dec. 8-15, 2013

As one of our fishermen this week said, “I can’t believe how many marlin are in the water. It’s crazy. This is December and we fished for 4 days and it was almost like we couldn’t get away from them! It was like they were following us around. We hooked and released 5, but could have caught others!”

Another said, “We know it’s off-season, but never expected to catch marlin, let alone 3 in two days and lost 2 more. Great fun to catch-and-release big fish!”

And another said, “Fight of my life. We were catching dorado, which we never expected in the winter so I had 30 pound test on when a marlin bit just about 100 yards from shore!”

His buddy said, “We thought we’d be fishing for sierra and maybe some cabrilla and instead we loaded a cooler with dorado and wahoo. I’m glad we released the marlin!”

And that’s pretty much how it went this week! Again, another surprise fishing week. It was windy and definitely cooler with some gray skies as is typical of fishing this time of year and we highly recommend not to forget bringing a jacket aboard. But, the fishing the last few weeks has definitely NOT been seasonal.

We did get sierra and cabrilla for sure. In fact, it was one of our better weeks for the inshore fishing which combined for cabrilla, bonito and even a few smaller rooster fish.

But, I’m again surprised by the continued presence of blue water fish like marlin (never had a November and December like this!), dorado and wahoo in the area. As I’ve mentioned before, we’re ONLY fishing with our Tailhunter Las Arenas fleet. We’ve pretty much shuttered out Tailhunter La Paz fleet as it’s usually too windy or not worth it to spend 1-2 hours getting bumped around to get to the fishing grounds. Plus the bait guys just aren’t out much since there’s not many folks fishing out’ve La Paz for the same reasons. So, it just makes more sense to keep fishing with our Tailhunter Las Arenas fleet where the fish are close; there’s bait around; and even if it’s a little brisk, we’re somewhat sheltered by Bahia de Los Muertos and the lee side of Cerralvo Island.

Not many anglers around this time of year so it’s kinda nice to be out there fishing and you almost have the whole Sea of Cortez all to yourself!

AIRLINE UPDATES

Just a heads-up. Looks like there’s some updates for flights from the U.S. this year. Normally, Aero Mexico flies from Los Angeles to La Paz on Sundays and Thursdays. This is the ONLY flight direct to La Paz non-stop. But, it looks like they have added some Saturday flights as well! Great news.

Also, most of our amigos fly to Cabo and then we have our Tailhunter shuttle come get them. Cabo is such an easy no-brainer much of the time. There’s more flights. There are daily flights. It’s usually alot cheaper flying to Cabo. With the newly completed road, it’s now just a bit over 2 hours now zooming up to La Paz!

Well, Alaska Air has opened routes from Boise ID to San Diego now! San Diego is a great airport and it’s way better than flying into LAX any day! Several of our amigos and clients have already booked that flight from Idaho and are really happy with it. San Diego to Cabo is cake!

Quite a surprise, but wahoo are still on the chew! Happy amigo, Fernando Sucre, from the San Francisco Bay area, was able to get in one day of fishing and scored this tasty wahoo near Cerralvo Island. The presence of wahoo has been a great treat so late in the season.

Recently retired amigo, Tim Zimmer, has been making the most of his free time fishing his brains out all over the country. He and his wife always make a point of visiting us in December and always do well. We had a great week of marlin fishing with most of them getting released. Check out Captain Jorge and Tim’s nice billfish.

Ken Gragg is another of our frequent amigos. This is his 3rd trip this year, and in 2 days fishing this week with Captain Gerardo scored 4 wahoo! This one seems to be missing it’s nose, but it’s a big fish. Captain Gerardo is NFL lineman-sized guy!

Check out the roosterfish! In December!!! What’s up with that? Steve Medley got in two days of fishing and scored this trophy roosterfish just off the beach to take a great photo and release the fish to fight again! It’s been the best roosterfish season in years!

Another bucket list fish! Prof. Mark Marcus came to visit us from Washington also popped a big rooster this week. He’s kinda struggling with the hot fish to take the photo, but it’s a sweet fish and was released after the photo! He also got a wahoo as well! See the photo below! Some great fishing!

DOUBLE ‘HOO! Professor Llew Williams from Florida and Professor Mark Marcus from Washington tag teamed for this double billing of wahoo off Cerralvo Island this past week. They took chunks back to our Tailhunter Restaurant for some great eats! Nicely done!

Chris and Damon Lewis are brothers who met up in La Paz for some fishing. Chris is from Mexico City and Damon lives in Redwood City near San Francisco. Yes! There’s still dorado in our waters. Normally, warm water fish, they’re still lingering in surprising numbers!

CRAZY MARLIN AND WAHOO LIGHT IT UP!

La Paz -Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Dec. 1-8, 2014

It has truly been a surprising end of the season here in La Paz. Mainly because the season hasn’t ended!

Here it is almost Christmas. Yes, it’s getting cooler. Yes, it’s getting windier and choppier. We’re supposed to be fishing inshore right now for cabrilla, pargo, bonito, and sierra.

Instead, we’ve still got blue water pelagic species still biting. And it’s not just one or two. I mean, crazily, the fish or on a serious chew!

We had several days this week when almost every single one of our pangas hooked at least one or two striped marlin between 90 and 120 pounds. We’ve had several days where every panga hooked 1-3 wahoo each between 15 and 40 pounds. We’ve still got trophy rooster fish up on the beach up to 50 pounds. Plus, there’s schools of 10-20 pound dorado out there as well!

This is more like the kind of fishing report I’d be giving in the summer or fall. Not in December. Not just a few weeks before Christmas! It’s been a wacky year, but I would never have expected this. Some days, it’s been like a buffet line. Pick and choose what kind of fish you want to fish for! I have no idea what the inshore rock fishing is like because no one is fishing for the inshore species! Maybe there are pargo and cabrilla and sierra to be caught, but those species have to be feeling ignored because just a few further yards offshore, there’s dorado and marlin and wahoo ready to bite!

It’s been a great late season treat. No complaints!

It was one of those nice tranquil holiday weeks. Not a whole lot of fishermen on the water, but a nice time to be in the area with some great weather and, not bad fishing. Here’s the morning view of Bahia de Los Muertos as we launch to go fishing for our Tailhunter Las Arenas Fleet.

They were a little tough to find early in the week, but the dorado bite got better as the week went on with most fish about 10-15 pounds like this decent bull held by our Captain Armando on the beach at Bahia de Los Muertos.

Yes! It’s hard to believe, but there are still good number of striped marlin and sailfish in the area to punctuate what has been a very good year for billfish. Most of the billfish have been running about 100-130 pounds and thankfully are getting released. Most of the catches have also been unintentionally caught when guys are fishing for other species and the line gets picked up by a billfish! A nice treat and very unexpected this late in the season!

Captain Archangel hoists up another roosterfish for the camera before letting it go. Another species we don’t often see this late in the season. But, we’re finding them in the shallow waters inshore near the lighthouse. All of them are getting released.

WEEK STARTS SLOW ENDS ON UPSWING

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Nov. 24 to Dec. 1, 2013

Winds and waters got a little cooler this past week and we even had little flurries of rain that threatened. We still got some fish, but overall, being a holiday weekend there just weren’t that many anglers in town. The week started rather slowly and I figured that the season changes finally caught up with us. Fishing was slow. Just a few fish here and there.

But that’s what I had been expecting for about this time of year as the season changes to cooler conditions. Basically, that means fewer blue water fish like dorado and billfish and more inshore species like cabrilla, pargo, jack crevalle and sierra. So, after a few so-so fishing days early in the week, I was about ready to call it and say the warm-water species are gone.

But, then as the week went on, fishing got better. We started hitting more dorado schools. We had a few biters from billfish (sailfish and marlin) and even got a few nice-sized rooster fish! The dorado do seem a bit more scattered, but it’s great that they are still around. Likewise, the roosters are where you’d expect them…around the Las Arenas lighthouse and off Punta Perrico, but the fact that they are even here this late in the season is kinda cool! The marlin? Who knows! It seems that every day at least one of our pangas is getting hooked up and more often-than-not, several hookups a day. I think the waters are still warm enough to hold them in the area, plus there are still some big schools or bonito in the area which is perfect food for the billfish.

So, as of my writing, there’s still some pelagic species running around. Again, I’m not sure how long this will last, but we’ll enjoy it as long as we get it. The forecast for the coming week calls for some increasing winds and even a slight chance of rain so we’ll have to keep an eye out.

Another good week for billfish surprisingly for so late in the season. Raul Chollet with Captain Armando got his first marlin. We got quite a few billfish and almost all of them were released. This one was taken just off Punta Perico.

From Wyoming, Rick and Amy Kasper always do well fishing with us. They got into a nice school of dorado just off Las Arenas. Dorado are getting more scarce as the waters cool, but so far, we’re still finding roaming schools.

Benny Salgado is often seen playing lead guitar with the Tailhunter Restaurant house band on Friday nights. He went fishing with us for the first time ever on the water and first time fishing. His first fish ever…a striped marlin!

Raul Chollet has another dorado for the panga. Most of the dorado this week were the 8-20 pound class fish, but they’re hungry and voracious!

Even though it’s almost December, there’s still roosterfish in the water! Captain Jorge with Amy Kasper just inside Bahia de Los Muertos caught and released this roosterfish.

Many thanks to our long-time amigo, Bill Boyce (orange shirt) who brought his great camera crew down this week to fish with us and film for his popular TV show “IGFA Saltwater Adventures.” They got some great footage and had some fun with our folks!

BLUE WATER SPECIES STILL HOLDING!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Nov 17-24, 2013

It wasn’t a spectacular week of fishing, but given the time of the year, it wasn’t a bad week either and there were some very good catches. It’s just that seasons are changing and water temperatures are dropping taking with it more and more of the warm water species.

But, still, we had OK numbers of dorado. Limits were harder to come by, but everyone still got a few dorado between 8 and 20 pounds. There were also some decent surprising roosters around near the Las Arenas lighthouse with most fish between 10 an 30 pounds. We also still have decent numbers of billfish around as well. Every day we got at least 1 or more hook-ups on sailfish or marlin with most fish either breaking off or getting released. All of these species are somewhat unusual to still be biting this late in the season so these catches are treats. More likely, we should be fishing for more inshore species like cabrilla, sierra, jack crevalle and pargo.

I imagine, as the waters continue to cool and winds get stronger, we’ll be fishing more and more for these inshore species.

One really nice spark this week were the appearance of wahoo. Mid-week, we got into a nice jag with several of our boats hooking up to the speedsters and a few getting boats. All of these were on the south side of Cerralvo Island and we had not taken any wahoo in about 2 week so this was a nice surprise to get into these trophies!

Our biggest day of the week happened to be when TV show host and IGFA Rep, Bill Boyce brought his film crew down to shoot for his TV show “IGFA Saltwater Adventures.” I was pretty nervous. Fishing had not been real great. It was also a full moon and windy plus being “off-season” wasn’t the best time to be fishing!

Still, Bill and his crew went out with our Tailhunter Las Arenas fleet and brought the cameras. Between our 3 pangas out, we got some great footage! 6 marlin caught and released. Some great action on dorado plus some rooster fish caught in Muertos Bay!

Surprisingly, we’ve had a pretty nice showing of trophy roosterfish the last month during a time when we normally don’t see roosters! But, they’ve been a great treat with fish like this one caught by Ryan Chipley who loves fishing the light tackle. Captain Pancho, normally smiling, helps out the shot. Note how close they are to the shore!

Great action continues for fun school-sized dorado like these despite cooling waters and increasingly breezy conditions. But easy limits are not uncommon like these fish caught by our good amigos, Bob Solee from Portland CEO of B & B Fishing Rods and Mike Anderson all the way from Kodiak Island, Alaska.

When you come all the way out from Wyoming for your first time fishing in salt water and you get a mess of dorado plus your first marlin, that’s pretty good for Rod Lang with amigo, Rick Kasper, outdoor and hunting TV show host. Marlin and sailfish are still in the area. This one could not be released, but fish was donated.

If you’d really like some light tackle or flyfishing fun, not much can top jack crevalle for attitude and power! Schools of the tough fish, called “Toro” (Bull) in Spanish are up close to the beaches and rocks right now and can keep you bent for hours as they’ll hit just about anything tossed their way. Larger ones can go up to 30 pounds or more.

BLUE WATER SPECIES HANG IN THERE!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Nov. 10-17, 2014

We had some really nice weather this week. A bit of breeze, but overall really just sunny pleasant weather. Normally, this time of the year, it can get pretty blustery although if you’re not on the water, just a genuinely nice time to be in La Paz because the town is almost empty of tourists and traffic. Great time to be in La Paz!

But this week, pretty calm overall and correspondingly some good solid fishing with good action on a variety of species.

Dorado continued to be the highlight with good to great results on 8-15 pound fish. Perfect for lots of the light tackle folks and snow-bird amigos who really aren’t in town to fish, but are in town these days just to get some sunshine and maybe fish a day or so. Some don’t have alot of experience so this size of dorado makes for great sport as well as great eating for a first-timer. But for veteran fisher-folks as well, nothing wrong with limits of dorado ripping it up either!

I’m still amazed at how well we’re doing on the rooster fish also! Normally, we just don’t see many rooster fish this late in the season. However, it’s been a banner year for the big pez gallos since April, so I guess I should be surprised. We kinda just think the roosters go away and once the dorado start showing up in May or June, the focus is away from the rooster fish and more towards the dorado and other pelagic species.

But, maybe this year, the rooster fish have been here all along!

About a month or so ago, just for grins and giggles, some of the anglers started fishing for roosters because they were just tired of so many dorado! And whoa…we started getting into roosters again! Not many…but certainly enough to be a nice cherry on top of a good day of dorado fishing to top it off with a bucket-list rooster or two! And these fish have been a nice grade as well…20, 30…even 50 pound fish have been taken.

This past week was no exception with at least a rooster or two caught and released every day running in that 20-30 pound class.

As for other species, still getting into billfish by way of striped marlin and sailfish. Again, it’s been a super event for some of our first-timers who don’t have alot of experience and suddenly find themselves attached to a leaping billfish! Most are getting released and have been in that 80-130 pound size.

Not sure how much longer the blue water species like dorado and billfish will be along, but predictions for the week show that winds will be down so maybe our season will continue to hang on with the fish!

In a surprising bite the last few weeks, trophy roosterfish have shown up around the Las Arenas lighthouse which has been a real bonus to many of our anglers like Dan Hicks, our amigo from Seattle WA, who never expected to get a roosterfish this week, let alone a huge 50-60 pounder that he caught and released! Normally, we don’t see roosterfish this time of year, but lots of our anglers are finding the exotic fish lately.

You can never start them too young and Damon Davis, is the perfect dad to show his 5-year-old son, Caleb, how to do it, since Damon runs a sportfishing boat in Orange Co. CA and his dad is our amigo, James “Hawk” Davis an avid ace fisherman who lives in La Ventana near La Paz. Damon was out fishing near Las Arenas this past week and is shown on the beach with Caleb at Bahia de Los Muertos.

Marlin and sailfishing has been unusually good the past few weeks and it seems we hook several a day. About 90% are getting released or busting off…not surprising since we’re often fishing wit light tackle, but they’re still great fun. Leo Green from Washington got this striper while fishing with Captain Jorge of our Tailhunter Las Arenas fleet. The fish couldn’t be released but the meat was donated.

Good week for kids! And a great time for the family with all the school-sized dorado around right now. Clint Throop from Rockford Michigan wit his boy…6-year-old Christian pose with this fresh dorado fishing near Las Arenas. Another great Kodak moment that I”m sure Christian will always remember . Ed Hicks and Tiffany Isaacson were on their first trip fishing with us in La Paz. Tiffany wasn’t even sure she wanted to go fishing, let alone go to Mexico, but she’s convinced now. After a week of dorado fishing, she also got this nice sailfish off Cerralvo Island. Most of the meat was donated after it was not able to be released. Tiffany and Ed are from Washington.

From Oregon, Miles Brown, visits us every other year-or-so and always does well fishing with his dad, Rod. He shows off one of the school-sized dorado they caught off Cerralvo Island.

SOME RAIN AND WIND AS SEASONS CHANGE AND SEASON TAPERS BUT FISH STILL BITE NICELY!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Oct. 27-Nov. 3, 2014

We had another solid week of fishing with dorado again at center stage, but the biggest event would be probably be Mother Nature posting that the seasons are definitely changing. Northern winds, at times pretty strong, pretty much blew all week. That’s significant for several reasons.

Not only is is a harbinger of the changing seasons, but it also heralds cooler waters and a changing of the guard as far as fishing is concerned. They are a tad earlier than normal this year, but nevertheless, as they continue to blow and cool things down, the blue water pelagic species will start to move off and we’ll see more inshore species.

Therefore, fish like marlin, sailfish, and dorado, that have been our mainstays the past several months will be replaced by more inshore species like pargo, cabrilla, jack crevalle and sierra. Part of that, is also because it will be harder to get too far out away from shore anyway.

As the winds hit from the north, it can get downright wet and bumpy. That’s why we pretty much shut down our Tailhunter La Paz fleet mostly from December to March. Unless you want to get soaked and have your kidneys jarred, it’s just not worth it. It’s easier to have us shuttle you over to Bahia de Los Muertos and fish with our Las Arenas fleet where at least you’re somewhat protected and the fishing is closer.

However, this year, it looks like we’re closing down the La Paz side a bit earlier. This past week, even in La Paz Bay, the north winds had white-caps even in the bay! Plus we had rainstorm Raymond come through. Extremely late for a rainstorm, but we had one really good night of good rain. It didn’t affect the fishing and we still got out and got fish, but this is pretty late in the season to get a rainstorm although it did make for a nice cozy night to stay in and watch the rain in the bay from a seaside restaurant (At Tailhunters, we had a full load of folks watching football plus the rain outside and they enjoyed it!).

As, I said, we still got fish!

The dorado were still voracious most days with most of our pangs getting limits or near limits of fish…if that’s what they wanted. The dorado have been so prevailant that anglers would load up on more dorado than they wanted…even catching and releasing so many…that they would try for other species instead. So, the counts didn’t really reflect the reason some anglers didn’t get limits of dorado. It was because the anglers weren’t fishing for dorado.

Instead, the boxes and action were filled with other species…marlin and sailfish were still out. I’d have to say the billfish angling was good to excellent most days with, again many of the guys getting their first billfish caught and most released. As well, rooster fish up to 60 pounds were taken. Again, very unusual to see rooster fish this late in the season, but they’re there near the rocky and sandy areas close to shore at Las Arenas. A great opportunity for our some of our clients to check it off the bucket list and get one of these exotic fish.

As well, the counts also showed some nice cabrilla, sierra, jack crevalle, bonito, snapper and pargo! Some of this is because the seasons are changing, as mentioned above. But, also because anglers were making a point to chase these species because they were tired of dorado. Alot of the anglers simply changed to light tackle…like bass gear and had some fun catching-and-releasing dorado as fast as they could go!

Also, we had wahoo hooked almost every day. I say “hooked” because almost every one of them hooked got off! Just fishing! But, obviously the speedsters are still out there. Some of the hookups occurred while guys were fishing for dorado and the dorado where schooling around at the panga and a wahoo would zip in and pick up the bait. On light tackle or straight mono, it’s not much of a battle when a wahoo going 50-70 mph with razor sharp teeth grabs the bait! If the hooks isn’t set “just right” it’s a short battle!

WESTERN OUTDOOR NEWS TUNA JACKPOT 2013

The first week of November is always the popular crazy Western Outdoor News Tuna Jackpot one of the largest fishing tournaments in Cabo each year. Jill and I work the tournament which will take place from Wednesday to Saturday with the Wyndham Hotel as the anchor hotel. It’s always a blast with big fish a big parties! Both of us will be at registration on Wednesday and I will be working the scales while Jill is on the tournament central tent handling logistics. Shandi Weeks from Paso Robles CA went at it for an entire week trying to get a big fish. On her 4th day, she finally nailed it with a huge 50-pound class bull dorado…the largest in weeks…that was longer than she is tall! Shandi was fishing with live bait with our Tailhunter La Paz fleet. During the battle, the fish snapped her fishing rod when it got close to the panga and sped off on another blazing run. She still got the fish!

Our good amigo, Scott McKenzie, from Seattle WA fishes with us several times a year over many years and had never put a trophy roosterfish in the boat until this week…at a time when when we normally don’t see many roosters! Scott caught this big one off Las Arenas and released the fish after the photo op!

Bill Lee is from the San Francisco Bay area and shows off some great colors on this bull dorado taken fishing off Las Arenas.

First timer, Michele Edwards, from Loma Rica CA celebrated her 25th anniversary by fishing an entire week with us and did some great action with dorado like this one as well as several billfish.

Folks come to fish with us for years and never get a shot at one of our famous roosterfish! Mi primo and his wife, Tim and Taylor Torres, were fishing with us this past week for the first time and got 2 nice roosters that they caught and released. Nearby, you can see the cliffs of Punta Perrico near Las Arenas.

Another of our great gals who came to fish with us this week, Michele Conklin, from Washington State was celebrating her retirement and fished with Captain Jorge near Las Arenas and shows off the great colors on a “tiger” bull dorado caught just off the beach.

Another of our amigas from Washington in the house! Dan Hicks, her husband, fished the day before and Lisa didn’t have a chance, so Dan told her he’d watch their little boy Sammy back and the hotel so she could go fishing alone! She did well with dorado like this one! Bravo to both of them on the tag-team fishing!

Big smile from Dave Conklin who put this fresh one in the boat fishing with Captain Jorge just outside of Bahia de Los Muertos. Dave’s from Washington state and was on his first trip with us.

Cradling a big trophy roosterfish, Jan Jacobs, took this big boy just off Punta Perrico and quickly released it. Great fish! We caught several of these big ones this week with pretty much all of them being released.

Good day and a good start for Tim and Taylor Torres, from Las Vegas who put these nice mahi in the box to take home. First timers and first day fishing! They also released a pair of 40-50 pound roosters!

Parting shot…with Jeff Brown from Oregon…and a giant squid with Captain Jorge. After about 6 weeks of having the giant squid around for bait and for eating…it looks like the squid are finally gone. It was great to have them and great fun.

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Oct. 20-27, 2013

A great solid sunny week of fishing…just the way it’s supposed to be!

Every day…pretty much every panga got into fish with a nice variety of species with dorado leading the way. Both our Tailhunter La Paz and Tailhunter Las Arenas fleet got into nice jags of the mahi mahi. If I had to say, there were MORE fish with our Las Arenas fleet, and fewer but LARGER fish with our La Paz fleet.

As well, both sides were sprinkled daily with billfish hookups with marlin and sails hooked daily and most of them getting released and many of our anglers getting their first billfish. It’s quite a treat, especially when a first timer who has never fished gets their first billfish..sometimes their first fish ever is a sailfish or marlin! It happened several times this week! Folks who may have only caught a trout or never even had a rod in their hand suddenly have a 150 pound freight train at the end of their lines getting towed around in a panga!

Speaking about first timers as well…we have rooster fish biting! I don’t know what’s up with that because normally, this isn’t rooster fish time, but the last two weeks, we’ve had 150-50 pound just off the beaches slamming the rods. Since no one has been fishing for them for awhile, it’s like these fish feel like they’ve been ignored. They’re not there every day, but on the days they roll up on the beach, there are double and triple hookups! Again, a big thrill for alot of our clients to get this much sought-after exotic fish.

I can tell the the fishing is changing. Cooler winds from the north are definitely increasing. It’s a pretty time to be here and the weather is cooler by the week. Some days us locals, and even my captains, are all wearing sweatshirts and hoodies! (Of course, the tourists in shorts and flip-flops think we’re crazy since it’s still 85 degrees outside!). But the nights are definitely cooler and we’re seeing more and more cooler water fish like sierra, cabrilla and pargo in the counts.
