Nice “skinny” for Matt Garrett from Washington who pulled up this nice wahoo that ran about 30 pounds just off Cerralvo Island. This was Matt’s first trip to La Paz. The wahoo have been pretty consistent now the last few weeks. We’re taking a few every day.

This is the kind of dorado we like to see! Big bull dorado on the beach caught by Vince Bussio from Utah! There’s a few other dorado tails down by his feet as well.

Great photo, smile and colors as Sandy Davis poses with a fresh wahoo off the south end of Cerralvo Island. Sandy is the sister of our good amiga, Donna Thompson who rocks the fishing grounds and lives in La Ventana. (Thanks for the photo!)

Kansas City in the house! Marion Lawver pulled this nice dog-tooth snapper (pargo perro / dog-tooth snapper) out’ve the rocks. Tough tough fish that is all teeth, sharp gills and scales and lots of power. But they taste great! Nicely done!

Some nice mahi on the beach as Don Henderson and Bill Cook from Idaho hold up a couple of dorado they caught with our Tailhunter Fleet and Captain Victor.

It’s late in the season, but whalesharks are still in our La Paz Bay. Early this week, Jill and I took a few hours to snorkel with the hoping to find maybe 1 whale. Instead we ended up in the water with 8 of the gentle creatures! This one glides by the panga and is about 20 feet long! A baby…they grow over 50 feet long!

With water only between 10 and 15 feet deep and incredibly warm, the big “babies” are feeding on plankton near the surface and often gulp their meals by opening their mouths and letting the food flow in! One of them seems to be giving Jill a big smile as it came next to our panga. We were snorkeling with our good friends at Fun Baja.

It’s a great experience to get in the water with huge creatures and we had EIGHT of the “baby” whalesharks around us while we snorkeled for a few hours in water that was only 10-15 feet deep. Schools of foraging bait fish accompany the big whalesharks and feed off the leftovers! This big guy waited very patiently while I took his photo.

FISHING STILL ERRATIC BUT SOME QUALITY FILLS THE GAPS

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of May 4-11, 2014

Winds continue to be a problems…some days. Others it’s barely breezy. But this type of weather is consistent to this transitional time of year when it’s not quite spring and still not quite summer although air and water temps are relatively warm. So, some days, it can be pretty bouncy out there limiting our range and style of fishing while other days, it’s like a pond!

Fishing is reflective of those conditions as well. If it’s windy, we’re somewhat confined to inshore fishing, although that can be quite good for cabrilla, snapper, pargo, jack crevalle, small to large rooster fish and even some late-season sierra. On the days that we’re able to range a bit further (fortunately, we never have to THAT far for our fishing!), we add to that list the larger dorado and wahoo which bit pretty well this week, especially off the north and south end of Cerralvo Island. The wahoo were most aggressive in the early morning hours around sunrise and mid-morning and ranged from 20-40 pound fish. Trolling with dark-colored Rapalas and Yo Zuri’s worked best.

The rooster fish saved us quite often with fish right up near the beaches and rocks going 25-50 pounds.

Summarily, it was spotty action. Straight on…

It’s hard to explain. You can do OK one day and, even tho’ conditions had not changed much, you can really struggle the next day. Different boats do differently each day. There can be long stretches of little action suddenly punctuated by the zing of a line going off or jetting jerked outta your socks by a fish slamming the bait or lure.

Bait continues to be a problem. From what I’m hearing, the el nino has been plaguing the entire Baja. I’m getting communications from the East Cape as well as Cabo asking if we have bait to sell or send. I heard from friends in Loreto that they are also having trouble with live bait as well. We’re making do with what nature gives us these days. We’re using larger baits like stripped bonito as well as mackerel and caballitos…that all make excellent bait, but it’s not like you can throw handfuls of larger baits into the ocean for chum like we’re used to doing with sardines. We are also using live ballyhoo as well.

One note of optimism is that I’m getting reports that out at the 88 bank outside of Cerralvo Island there’s lots of small mackerel and caballitos and small bonito balling up. These are palm-sized fish that are super on the hook and we’re looking hopefully that in the week or two that area could blow up on us. Last year, in the summer, the 88 turned into dorado and marlin candy land with dorado all going 40-50 pounds and marlin cruising the area in great numbers as well.

Tom Worley cabrilla grande tags smalll 4-14-proc

Not bad for a first time out with us! From Evergreen, Colorado, Tom Worley pulled this trophy pig cabrilla (Mexican seabass) out’ve the rocks near Cerralvo Island. He was working a live bait early in the week.

Many of you know Esteban Romero, one of our favorite amigos and who drives for us. Even he got into the wahoo action with this speedster while trolling a Rapala outside of Bahia de Los Muertos near Cerralvo Island.

Another first-timer with us had an incredible two days of fishing getting and releasing his first roosterfish of about 40 pounds then sticking a wahoo and a dorado for the grand slam. McKell Condie was visiting us from Utah. Oh…and he also jumped in the water to swim with a whaleshark too!

Big smile and a two-handed batch of dorado for everyone’s amigo, Jorge Romero, who also took some time this week to check out the fishing. He got a total of 4 dorado for the day.

Amigo, Paul Nagata, from San Francisco, usually visits us several times a year and got away this week for a quick few days with his favorite captain Jorge. This particular day, Paul jumped all over the dorado, but the previous day he hooked a massive wahoo that straightened the hook near the south-end of Cerralvo Island.

These two guys cracked me up! Left is Bob Martz and on the right is Jordan McMasters from Victoria, Canada. They show off a few of their dorado on the beach, but Jordan also caught and released a 50 pound roosterfish.

From Mexico City, Carlos Westerman was able to get out one day with us at La Arenas and our Captain Archangel. The action wasn’t great, but he made the most of it and took this nice-sized wahoo and dorado.

FRUSTRATING FISHING BUT SOME NICE HIGHLIGHTS ON A TOUGH WEEK

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of April 27-May 4, 2014

It was somewhat of a frustrating week of fishing. It started well. It ended fairly well. But in between, it was a bit rugged.

We had some promise going into the week but then strong winds and some really high tidal surges and waves seemed to have not only stirred up the waters, but also chased away the bits of live bait spots we had as well as brought up cooler waters and some rougher waves. Not exactly the best conditions or situations for fishing. Just being honest.

There were some highlights, however. What we lacked in quantity and action we tended to make up for it in some nice quality fishing. There were some good-sized rooster fish taken that ran 30-60 pounds and some larger ones broken off. All of them released.

There were also some larger dorado in the area as well that helped out as well. Some of the pangas got limits or near limits some days. Not everyone, but several boats a day would do well. It just depended on the the spot as well as the luck and skill of the anglers.

But, truth be told, there were days this week when boats came back with nothing…either because of simple bad luck or losing fish or choosing to chase a fish that was “hot”one day, but cooled off the next. I especially felt badly for a pair of flyfishing anglers we had that fished hard and hardcore like troopers for the entire week and pretty much came up goose-egged. It wasn’t a good week for flyfishing…and tough for the conventional fishing as well. Despite some nice catches, it might have been one of the more frustrating weeks of the young season.

The highlight would had to have been the wahoo that went on the bite again. Every day, we took a few and lost even more to the speedy toothy fish. But, for many of our anglers, it was their first wahoo with some decent 20-35 pound ‘hoos brought into the boat. South end of Cerralvo Island was our hot spot trolling Rapala and YoZuri lures.

We got into some wahoo this week and we’re not surprised that young Taylor Murphy fishing with grandpa Roger Thompson got one of them. She always does well. A purple Rapala off the south end of Cerralvo Island did the trick.

Birthday girl! Karyn Jennings was fishing with her husband Greg and had a good birthday week with us in La Paz. Here she shows off a day’s catch with a great mix of dorado, cabrilla and wahoo fishing with our Tailhunter Las Arenas fleet. A good bunch of fillets was cooked up at our Tailhunter Restaurant! Karyn is from Colorado.

First timer, Steve Bradley who lives in Northern California on the Smith River was out with Tailhunter Captain Pancho and got his first dorado just outside of Bahia de Los Muertos. He also got his first rooster, a 30 pounder that was released and lost a larger fish as well.

John Nagy from Marina del Ray CA slips quietly in and out’ve La Paz and just nails the fish! I think he got our largest wahoo of the week with this 4- pounder off the south side of Cerralvo Island on a blue and white Rapala. He was fisihing with our Tailhunter driver, Esteban and they also got one other wahoo, 2 pargo, and released a marlin. Nicely done!

Captain Victor “El Jefe” from our Tailhunter Las Arenas fleet poses with first-timer, Ron Kling from Byers, Colorado who came down to catch his first roosterfish. On this particular day, he got 5 roosters between 40 and 50 pounds which he released! And he kept this nice dorado for dinner!

Guys come for years trying to get a sniff from a wahoo fishing our area. Greg Jennings nailed one his first try fishing with our Taihunter Las Arenas fleet just outside of Bahia de Los Muertos.

FISHING SLOWLY GETS BETTER WITH WARMER TEMPS

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of April 20-27, 2014

There were good and there were bad things about this past week of fishing. Let’s start with the bad.

There were some really windy days. Some cooler water temps. But those things are to be expected this time of year when things are in transition between the warm and colder seasons. Still, it didn’t always make for the best fishing conditions nor, did it help with getting bait. Basically, it’s almost like a chart…the higher the wind, the poorer the fishing. The lower the wind, the better the fishing. Overall, I’d give this week a so-so rating in terms of fishing. It’s been worse. But, normally, it’s a whole lot better.

But, let’s focus on some of the positives.

Take a look at some of this week’s photos. Yup…wahoo made a nice surprising reappearance this week. Around the north and sound end of Cerralvo Island, the speedy skinnies were around and willing to eat slow trolled Rapalas and bait. Sizes ranged from pinky 15 pounders up to about 40 pounds.

Additionally, we had a really great week on the roosters for our Las Arenas anglers. I think just about everyone who really wanted to check “rooster fish” off the bucket list got at least one. I don’t have any photos this week because, with much appreciation, all the roosters were released! But, there were some nice quality fish taken off the sandy beach areas with fish in the 20-45 pound size and some larger that were lost.

To the good stuff, add in a few marlin coming alive and taking some hits, but all of them coming off plus the dorado were still around although not in big numbers as previous weeks. I still consider the dorado to be our bread-and-butter fish at the moment. Both our Las Arenas and La Paz fleet had dorado as their predominant go-to fish. Some decent 20 pounders in the mix, but some larger fish lost to pilot error!

Hope the winds slow down and the bait gets better! Should all improve as we move closer to summer!

yellowtail Tim Butterworth tags small 4-13

Tim Butterworth from Petaluma has been coming to the La Paz area for many many season and been a Tailhunter amigo for almost as long! But, he never had caught a yellowtail. Until this past week where he stuck this thick one north of La Paz.

This is a very special picture. Bob Nielson has been a Baja rat for years and a good friend and clients for many seasons with Tailhunters. He was so excited because in all those years, he had never caught a sierra and was jazzed about bringing it that night to Tailhunter Restaurant to have us make ceviche. Regretfully, Bob flew home Monday evening from La Paz…went to bed…and passed away in his sleep. Bob was a great guy and there was never a dull moment. He was always a character. Our waiters at Tailhunter Restaurant called him “Bob ZZ Top!” God bless you Bob! We miss you fish brother!

Here’s a tough fish…a big fat pargo mulato…great eating and great to catch out’ve the rocks. But, Mindy Pollock jacked up this trophy with some help from Captain Bolo around Espirito Santo Island.

I love this photo! Talk about the “look” of a fishing pirate, this is our amigo from Idaho, Mick Pollock who fished with us a few days and got yellowtail, pargo and sierra but shows off one of his nice dorado.

Bill Ausman from Atascadero CA was able to squeeze in a quick day of fishing with us while on vacation in La Paz and jumped on one of our pangas at Las Arenas to put the hurt on this nice bull dorado just outside of Bahia de Los Muertos.

A check on the satellite water temperatures from our friends at Terrafin.com show all the warm water in our area. All that orange and red stuff is water temps i the high 70’s and 80’s! Not much cool water around!

FISHING AND TEMPERATURES WARMING UP!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of April 6-13, 2014

Gosh, it’s getting warm down here! I would say it’s a bit warmer than usual, but a really pleasant week with cool morning and then highs in the high 80’s to low 90’s during the fishing day dropping to great afternoon and early evening breezes! Water temps, as we’ve been saying the last few months are warmer than normal now with most surface temperatures in tickling the 80’s as well making for some great swimming and diving, not to mention warm-water species for fishing.

That being said, since we fish both Las Arenas and La Paz with our fleets, the bite this past week reflected exactly those water temperatures. Around Cerralvo Island and the Las Arenas area where water temperatures are pretty much all warm now and in the 80’s dorado have been the mainstay catch already…much earlier than normal.

Fish are found in a number of places including right in Bahia de Los Muertos up close to the shore and beach then out towards the nearby buoys. You don’t have to get out that far to find the mahi! Fish size has also increased. Still alot of 10 pound schoolie-fish, but some bigger 20-25 pounders have been taken and larger ones lost. In this same area, we’re seeing an increased number of billfish as well like striped marlin.

As you go north to deeper and cooler waters (relatively speaking, but still “warmer than normal”) , especially around the north end of Cerralvo Island and Espirito Santo Island, we’ve been naturally encountering the cooler-water fish including some big barred-pargo and 40+ pound yellowtail (the ones we can stop! Some of these beasts are pretty mean!) There’s also some dorado moving into the area as well as waters get warmer.

Bait wise…gosh…not sure how that’s gonna play out. There seems to be zero or minimal sardines around. At Las Arenas, we’re using ballyhoo as well as stripped bonito. And, we’re using the larger ladyfish to get the bigger roosterfishg. For La Paz, we’re going out early and getting mackerel and caballitos (small jacks).

IGFA record holder, representative, author and journalist, Gary Graham, will also be on hand.

We are limiting this to just 40 persons on 20 panga “teams.” Couples are welcome! Cost is $1350 per person! Big smile for Miles! First timer to fish with us in La Paz, Miles, Brown spent the week getting some yellowtail, pargo, dorado (see below) and this nice roosterfish that he released with some help with the pose from Captain Jorge of the Tailhunter fleet. Nice to see the roosters have come in!

From Idaho taking a break from teaching school, Mandy Pollock let’s Tailhunter Capt. Boli struggle with this big yellowtail from the north side of La Paz. Still a few yellowtail around and this was Mandy’s first trip to La Paz.

Jeff has fished with us many times over the years, all the way from Minnesota! He had a good week on a variety of fish while he vacationed with his brothers including this trophy roosterfish they got off Las Arenas that was photo’d and quickly released!

Hard to believe such nice dorado are in the neighborhood, but they’ve been a welcome surprise like this nice bull taken by Miles Brown just outside of Bahia de Los Muertos. Great eating! Folks ask all the time if it’s good on the plate and then I tell them it’s “mahi mahi” on the restaurant menus!

Rod Brown from Wrangell, Alaska is one of our Tailhunter amigos who has fished with us several times a year for many years. He always does well. On this particular day they caught and released several nice roosters right off the beach at Las Arenas which can be seen nearby in the background.

SPRING TIME BITE HOLDS VARIETY THIS WEEK

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of March 30-April 6, 2014

This past week was a bit more typical of the kind of fishing we get during the spring time. With air temps in the low to mid-80’s with great sunshine and cooler evenings and water temperatures in the high 70’s, the bite reflected the normal transitional bite we see this time of the year.

We still got some breezy days that put some bump out there, but most days were not bad. Inshore fishing showed up with the usual characters. Some sierra, pargo and cabrilla were among this in the rocky reef and sandy areas. A few straggler yellowtail are here and there, but largely, with the waters a bit warmer than normal, our usual yellowtail numbers are down from normal.

The best news was that we finally got into rooster fish…basically, the fish that put our Las Arenas area on the fishing map as the “rooster fish capital of the world.” The world record 114 pound rooster fish was caught on these white-sand beaches and last year, we had one of the most spectacular rooster fish seasons in all our years down here. Last year, our “average” rooster was 40-90 pounds and we had a number fish over 100 pounds and one fish that was released that many estimated would have been close to 150-pounds and shatter the world record.

This past week, using live bait, we finally tied into some of these exotic fish with some fish rolling right around 20-40 pounds…all released, but encouraging that the fish are in place and willing to bite. We’ll have to keep an eye out on this, but so far pretty good news.

With other species, we’re still hitting the dorado as well which have really become our bread-and-butter these past few months. As waters warmed faster than normal, the dorado sort of either came in early or else never left us from last season. The fish we’re getting now are generally not schoolie-fish, but more like free swimmer solo or small group fish. However, there’s some respectable fish. Most are about 10 pounders, but there’s some 15-25 pounders around as well.

WANT A WORLD RECORD? TAILHUNTERS IS OFFICIAL NEW IGFA WEIGH STATION

Jill and I with our amigos, Pat McDonell editor for Western Outdoor New and IGFA representative; world record holder, author and journalist, Gary Graham holding one of the new official IGFA “release” scales that we now have at Tailhunters Sportfishing that can be used to officially measure catch-and-release fish. Released fish can now be submitted to the IGFA for world record status! We plan to go after a few this year. As well, our Tailhunter offices on the La Paz malecon also had a certified scale for conventionally caught fish that can be submitted for all-tackle and line-class world records.

Jacques Cousteau called the Sea of Cortez the “Aquarium of the World” and with more than 700 known species of fish and more being discovered yearly, it’s easy to see why. The area around La Paz is considered one of the best light tackle fisheries on the planet and arguably more world records have been set in the surrounding waters than few other places!

So, Tailhunter Sportfishing is jazzed to announce that we’re an official International Fish and Game Association (IGFA) weigh station. We have a certified scale at our headquarter offices on the La Paz waterfront and within a few months will have handheld certified scales for the beaches as well.

Even moreso, we’re excited about the fact that the IGFA now certifies fish that are caught and released! This is great news creating more opportunities to be a world record holder. To that end, we’ve now got official “release scales” that can be brought out on one of our pangas for folks looking to catch-and-release a world record! An official IGFA measuring scale MUST be used to measure and release the fish.

Additionally, given that Las Arenas is considered the roosterfish capital of the world, Tailhunter Sportfishing is now a member of the ROOSTERFISH FOUNDATION and we’ve ordered a number of tagging guns so that released roosters can now be tagged and recorded to hopefully proliferate the resource. We will hopefully have some of these devices in the next few weeks.

All of this is great news because our “LA PAZ PANGA SLAM” being held June 17-21 and sponsored by Western Outdoor News has now turned into a great opportunity to go after some of these world release records as well as hopefully having the first official “tag and release” roosterfish event! There are many categories that can be attained…especially for kids and women and line class records are always a possibility as well. Last year, we had 4 potential world record fish caught by our clients!

What the heck is going on? Wahoo in winter? Jack Steele originally from Seattle WA put this gorgeous ‘hoo on the boat fishing near Cerralvo Island late in the week. Check out the calm waters…it makes a difference!

Fat forktail! Charlie “Sticks” McGee is one of the best fishermen I know and a dynamite drummer and music teacher as well from San Diego. Our amigo stuck this thick yellowtail out in the channel north of La Paz.

When it comes to putting big fish in the boat, our amiga, Donna Thompson, from La Ventana via Long Beach CA holds a thick, fat wahoo…a personal best!

We’re smack in the middle of whale watching season and taking folks out daily to Bahia Magdalena to see the whales. Contact us for a once-in-a-lifetime experience and get close to these great animals. They normally start to leave around March so don’t delay!

Tailhunters is finally leaving the Pacific Northwest where we have been for the last month doing some outstanding shows in Puyallup WA (Seattle), Portland OR and Yakima WA! Thanks to everyone who has come by…old friends and new amigos! Lots of bookings for fishing with us in La Paz this year! But now, we leave the snow and rain and one of our favorite areas and head south all the way to the Phoenix ISE show where it’s supposed to be 80 degrees! THE WEEK IN SURPRISE BITE

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of February 9-16, 2014

An otherwise slow week was saved by a late week chew that turned up some quality fish.

As typical, we got the usual winds, especially early in the week. That never helps with the fishing but we come to expect that during the winter. Especially northern winds. It also really jacks up our ability to get live bait. But, as the week went on, the winds diminished.

And suddenly the bite turned on.

And it was a surprise. Usually, we look for inshore fish during winter. But instead, we got some real trophy stuff. Once again, just like last week, wahoo showed up around Cerralvo Island. Normally, it’s far too cold for us to be seeing these prized fish, but the boats took the at the north and south end of the island on slow trolled baits as well as lures. The fish were good quality too with fish going 20–50 pounds which are real slammers, especially when you consider that these are known to be the “fastest fish in the world” capable of blazing line off a reel at close to 70 mph!

But, on top of that, we also picked off a few dorado. Again, not only are these warm water fish, but we shouldn’t even be seeing these until about later March or April.

In addition to the wahoo and dorado, a few more of the yellowtail also bent the rods. These fish are more typical of this time of year and we should be going full bore on these any week now. So, it was encouraging to see more of these in the counts.

As for other species, we took some small pargo and snapper, cabrilla, and lots of bonito.

It’s been a great show season and Jill and Jonathan now leave the Pacific Northwest and the Yakima WA sportsmens show and head south to the Phoenix International Sportsmens Expo.

Our next show starting this week will be in the Cardinal Football Stadium where the NFL Cardinals play! This is a super show! Lots of stuff for the whole family! Come say hi!

TAILHUNTER ROAD TOUR TAKES IT TO PHOENIX

Our 2014 Tailhunter Road Tour takes to the road again this week. After an outstanding month in the Pacific Northwest attending shows in Washington and Oregon, we now drive south and take off our rain and snow gear and put on the shorts as we go to the International Sportsmans Expo in Phoenix, Arizona. This is really a super show right on the floor of the University of Phoenix Football stadium where the NFL Cardinals play! It’s a great place for a show and there’s always great weather, plenty of parking and lots to see!

The dates are Thursday to Sunday (Feb. 20-23rd).

Mark Martis visits La Paz several times a year and our amigo has been fishing with Tailhunter for well over a decade. He often surprises us with his great catches, but this surprise catch this past week with Captain Victor was this spectacular wahoo taken off Cerralvo Island. Officially our first wahoo of the season!

Seth Caillat got our first official Las Arenas yellowtail of the season. In fact he got two of the plus dorado using live ballyhoo out’ve Bahia de Los Muertos.

Whale watching season with the gray whales in Magdalena Bay is in full-swing right now with lots of whales in the shallow calm waters! Let us know if we can set up your whale watching trip for the experience of a lifetime! Whales usually hang out until the middle of March.

The Tailhunter Tour showed up for the Pacific Northwest Sportsmans Show this week in Portland Oregon and got slammed with a freak 4 day snow and ice storm that virtually froze everything in the city and shut down much of Portland. We still had a great show!

Like I said, we still had a spectacular show in Portland with lots of amigos visiting Jill and I including Matt, Tim and Phil who stopped to say hi and take a quick photo at our Tailhunter booth. Next stop…YAKIMA, Washington.

A WEEK OF SURPRISES FOR FISHING WEEK!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Feb. 2-9, 2014

I’m not sure how to describe the week. OK, we got some fish. Yes, it was a little breezy and yes, it was a little bumpy some day out there. But that’s typical of this time of year. In all honesty, we didn’t get ALOT of fish. So, best to be truthful.

However, that’s not what made the week remarkable.

What made it remarkable was the quality of the fish we got!

OK, we got a few cabrilla and some bonito and some sierra. Ho-hum. That’s about par for winter fishing right now. But, whereas we got those big pargo snapper last week and I thought we were going to go zipping into pargo season, the pargo didn’t show.

Instead, it was a week of FIRSTS!

…we got our first yellowtail of the season…some nice 25-pound fish. These fish ate some slow trolled big Rapalas as well as slow-trolled ballyhoo that caused the fish to blow up. Secondly, we also got…(hold on…drumroll…) WAHOO!!! Yup. Wahoo, in winter at the south end of Cerralvo Island. Our first wahoo of the season!

On top of that we got dorado still biting. Dorado are SUMMER fish! What’s up with that? I have a feeling this could be a wacky start to the season. Every week, we’re running into something different. That just makes it fun.

TAILHUNTER TOUR LEAVES PORTLAND SHOW AND MOVES TO YAKIMA WASHINGTON!

It was an incredible crazy snow-filled week in Portland as a freaky 4-day snowstorm pretty much shut down the city! We still had a great time and booked lots of La Paz fishing trips and saw lots of our amigos!

Our 3-month Tailhunter Road Tour says adios to one of our favorite cities in Portland, Oregon where we had a crazy week of an unusual snow and ice storm that pretty much froze the city…and us! But, we had a great show and now move onto the CENTRAL WASHINGTON SPORTSMEN SHOW in YAKIMA, WASHINGTON! The show is a fun 3-day event from Friday to Sunday, Feb. 14-16th. Come say his and let’s talk about visiting us in La Paz this year…where it’s WARM!

A good example of some of our cooler water species that are becoming more pre-dominant was the seasons change. Aaron Chipley holds up some of the best-eating fish in our area…a sierra and a cabrilla (Mexican seabass).

Jane Vanderzanden on her first trip from Oregon to visit Tailhunter in La Paz puts another dorado in the panga fishing with our La Paz fleet north of town.

Yes, we’re still hooking marlin and sailfish this late in the season. Bob and Craig Brown with Captain Armando hooked this one and weren’t able to release it, but donated much of the meat. They were fishing near Cerralvo Island.

Dorado are still giving us plenty of good action as Jeff and Craig pull up a few nicer models on the beach.

COOLER WATERS AND BREEZES STILL PRODUCE END OF SEASON FISH

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Nov. 3-10, 2013

We had a pretty good week of fishing here in La Paz, but once again, it’s obvious that the seasons are changing. It’s definitely cooler and windier these days and for at least two days this week, the winds and chop really hampered the fishing. However, for the most part, since most of our anglers fish several days, an “off-day” gets made up on other days!

The dorado really keep us in the game, as they have for the past two or three months. Lots of school-sized 10-15 pounders, but this week, we found a few jags of larger fish off Cerralvo Island wind permitting with fish in the 20 -30 pound category that could quickly fill up a cooler.

Almost all our fishing now is with our Tailhunter Las Arenas fleet unless someone really wants to fish out’ve La Paz As mentioned above, the winds are kicking up now and when the northern winds blow, it’s just too difficult to head north out’ve the bay and get beat up heading to the fishing grounds. It’s just easier to drive over to Bahia de Los Muertos and fish on the lee side of Cerralvo Island or the lee of Bahia de Los Muertos and still find fish without getting wet or your teeth jarred out’ve your head!

In addition to the dorado, we were also getting marlin and sailfish with all fish being released plus some pargo and cabrilla and no shortage of bonito for fun. A few rooster fish along the beach in the 30 pound class plus jack crevalle rounded things out. We did have several biters of wahoo, but the sharp teeth made quick work of the lines and no fish were brought to the boats.

15th ANNUAL LOS CABOS TUNA JACKPOT TOURNAMENT

In a dramatic last-minute win, after two-days of fishing, the boat “Reel Quest” pulled into the Cabo San Lucas scales with a 192.4 pound yellowfin tuna to sweep the money boards at the 15th Annual Los Cabos Western Outdoor News Tuna Jackpot Tournament.

With more than 540 thousand dollars on the line, 7 teams shared the purse, but the big money winner were the team on the “REEL QUEST” that took the big money of $242 thousand dollars with a 192.4 pound yellowfin tuna.

As is our usual this time of year, Jill and I spent the week working at the 15th Annual Los Cabos Western Outdoor News Tuna Jackpot Tournament in Cabo San Lucas. It was a great time. The slogan is “Fish Hard. Party Harder” and there was plenty of both with 4 days of partying and 2 full days of hard-core tuna fishing.

Seven teams shared the purse of over $540 thousand dollars with the big money being taken by the team on “REEL QUEST” who dramatically won in the last few minutes of the 2nd day of competition. They pulled in with a 192.4 pound yellowfin tuna to sweep the money boards.

The tournament was the largest of the year for Cabo San Lucas with 134 teams from around the world participating in the big event. In addition to the big money purses, the event also raised thousands of dollars for several charities.

In a surprising bite the last few weeks, trophy roosterfish have shown up around the Las Arenas lighthouse which has been a real bonus to many of our anglers like Dan Hicks, our amigo from Seattle WA, who never expected to get a roosterfish this week, let alone a huge 50-60 pounder that he caught and released! Normally, we don’t see roosterfish this time of year, but lots of our anglers are finding the exotic fish lately.

You can never start them too young and Damon Davis, is the perfect dad to show his 5-year-old son, Caleb, how to do it, since Damon runs a sportfishing boat in Orange Co. CA and his dad is our amigo, James “Hawk” Davis an avid ace fisherman who lives in La Ventana near La Paz. Damon was out fishing near Las Arenas this past week and is shown on the beach with Caleb at Bahia de Los Muertos.

Marlin and sailfishing has been unusually good the past few weeks and it seems we hook several a day. About 90% are getting released or busting off…not surprising since we’re often fishing wit light tackle, but they’re still great fun. Leo Green from Washington got this striper while fishing with Captain Jorge of our Tailhunter Las Arenas fleet. The fish couldn’t be released but the meat was donated.

Good week for kids! And a great time for the family with all the school-sized dorado around right now. Clint Throop from Rockford Michigan wit his boy…6-year-old Christian pose with this fresh dorado fishing near Las Arenas. Another great Kodak moment that I”m sure Christian will always remember . Ed Hicks and Tiffany Isaacson were on their first trip fishing with us in La Paz. Tiffany wasn’t even sure she wanted to go fishing, let alone go to Mexico, but she’s convinced now. After a week of dorado fishing, she also got this nice sailfish off Cerralvo Island. Most of the meat was donated after it was not able to be released. Tiffany and Ed are from Washington.

From Oregon, Miles Brown, visits us every other year-or-so and always does well fishing with his dad, Rod. He shows off one of the school-sized dorado they caught off Cerralvo Island.

SOME RAIN AND WIND AS SEASONS CHANGE AND SEASON TAPERS BUT FISH STILL BITE NICELY!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Oct. 27-Nov. 3, 2014

We had another solid week of fishing with dorado again at center stage, but the biggest event would be probably be Mother Nature posting that the seasons are definitely changing. Northern winds, at times pretty strong, pretty much blew all week. That’s significant for several reasons.

Not only is is a harbinger of the changing seasons, but it also heralds cooler waters and a changing of the guard as far as fishing is concerned. They are a tad earlier than normal this year, but nevertheless, as they continue to blow and cool things down, the blue water pelagic species will start to move off and we’ll see more inshore species.

Therefore, fish like marlin, sailfish, and dorado, that have been our mainstays the past several months will be replaced by more inshore species like pargo, cabrilla, jack crevalle and sierra. Part of that, is also because it will be harder to get too far out away from shore anyway.

As the winds hit from the north, it can get downright wet and bumpy. That’s why we pretty much shut down our Tailhunter La Paz fleet mostly from December to March. Unless you want to get soaked and have your kidneys jarred, it’s just not worth it. It’s easier to have us shuttle you over to Bahia de Los Muertos and fish with our Las Arenas fleet where at least you’re somewhat protected and the fishing is closer.

However, this year, it looks like we’re closing down the La Paz side a bit earlier. This past week, even in La Paz Bay, the north winds had white-caps even in the bay! Plus we had rainstorm Raymond come through. Extremely late for a rainstorm, but we had one really good night of good rain. It didn’t affect the fishing and we still got out and got fish, but this is pretty late in the season to get a rainstorm although it did make for a nice cozy night to stay in and watch the rain in the bay from a seaside restaurant (At Tailhunters, we had a full load of folks watching football plus the rain outside and they enjoyed it!).

As, I said, we still got fish!

The dorado were still voracious most days with most of our pangs getting limits or near limits of fish…if that’s what they wanted. The dorado have been so prevailant that anglers would load up on more dorado than they wanted…even catching and releasing so many…that they would try for other species instead. So, the counts didn’t really reflect the reason some anglers didn’t get limits of dorado. It was because the anglers weren’t fishing for dorado.

Instead, the boxes and action were filled with other species…marlin and sailfish were still out. I’d have to say the billfish angling was good to excellent most days with, again many of the guys getting their first billfish caught and most released. As well, rooster fish up to 60 pounds were taken. Again, very unusual to see rooster fish this late in the season, but they’re there near the rocky and sandy areas close to shore at Las Arenas. A great opportunity for our some of our clients to check it off the bucket list and get one of these exotic fish.

As well, the counts also showed some nice cabrilla, sierra, jack crevalle, bonito, snapper and pargo! Some of this is because the seasons are changing, as mentioned above. But, also because anglers were making a point to chase these species because they were tired of dorado. Alot of the anglers simply changed to light tackle…like bass gear and had some fun catching-and-releasing dorado as fast as they could go!

Also, we had wahoo hooked almost every day. I say “hooked” because almost every one of them hooked got off! Just fishing! But, obviously the speedsters are still out there. Some of the hookups occurred while guys were fishing for dorado and the dorado where schooling around at the panga and a wahoo would zip in and pick up the bait. On light tackle or straight mono, it’s not much of a battle when a wahoo going 50-70 mph with razor sharp teeth grabs the bait! If the hooks isn’t set “just right” it’s a short battle!

WESTERN OUTDOOR NEWS TUNA JACKPOT 2013

If you’re in Cabo this week, that’s where we’re headed as well. The first week of November is always the popular crazy Western Outdoor News Tuna Jackpot one of the largest fishing tournaments in Cabo each year. Jill and I work the tournament which will take place from Wednesday to Saturday with the Wyndham Hotel as the anchor hotel. It’s always a blast with big fish a big parties! Both of us will be at registration on Wednesday and I will be working the scales while Jill is on the tournament central tent handling logistics. Of course, we’ll also be at all the parties and banquets to meet-and-greet! The motto of the tournamet is “FISH HARD and PARTY HARDER!” If you’re in Cabo, come say hi and watch the festivities.
