The Big Picture and the Rest of the Story…

From Washington, Steve Hastings was out with Captain Victor from the Tailhunter Fleet and did the hat trick with 3 wahoo not far off the rocks that went 25-35 pounds. He also got some tasty white bonito as well.

 

Jeff Sakuda from Cypress CA makes one to two trips to La Paz to fish with Tailhunter for almost 20 years and loves fishing with Captain Jorge. One day produced two wahoo near Cerralvo Island.  The largest one taken on a purple Rapala Xrap and the other hit a live sardine.

Big roosterfish right off the rocks by Mark Bonsack from Washington. The fish was taken on live bait and released. These are the first large ones we’ve seen this year…right about on time!

Some tasty and hard fighting pargo liso/ mullet snapper that are in spawn mode right now. Gavin Chun and Navin Ramharak on the beach with the great shot. Fish much larger get lost in the rocks when they are schooling like this.

Now, this is a fun day of fishing! Our good friends and anglers for many many years, Jeff Sakuda and Marianne Sugawara with a full rack of spring fish including white bonito, snapper and pargo.

Yup…some yellowtail still around. Our Captain Pancho does the honors! Hamachi for the grill!

Aloha boys from Maui shaka the camera. They only had one day to fish but got into some action. That’s Dean Badoyen and Ed with pargo, cabrilla, a huge trigger fish and snapper.

Yellowtail are still hitting on-and-off near Cerralvo Island. Mark Bonsack from Washington was fishing with the Tailhunter Fleet and caught this stocky forktail.

After a couple of so-so weeks where the weather and winds dictated our fishing, we finally got in a solid week of good weather and consequently better fishing.  There were still some lingering pesky winds, but overall a great time to be out on the water with good action and some good quality to the fish as well.

 

It also helps that we’ve got more fishermen now that the season is on too!

 

For sure, there were still some ups and downs and some low-points where the bite dropped off or only bonito bit.  However…inshore fishing over reefs, rocks and structure continued produce the most action as is typical of this time of the year.

 

Our guys who worked closer to shore and in the shallows saw good action and good quality on big snapper, big cabrilla, large triggerfish, amberjack, yellowtail and both barred pargo and pargo mulato.  Lots of larger fish lost in the rocks too…maybe half of all the fish hooked, but no shortage of biters!

The same areas produced jack crevalle, several kinds of bonito (including the good eating white-bonito) and still kicked out yellowtail as well up to about 25-pounds.

…and a jack crevalle! Lots of fun when you get into a school of these that can number into the hundreds. There’s a reason why the Mexican name for them is “TORO” which means “bull.” They are scrappy bulldogs when hooked.

 

We also hit our first big roosterfish of the season too.  We’ve gotten some smaller punk fish, but we got into some of the larger 30-50 pounders this week finally. All released.

 

Not too far away and still in relatively shallow water, the biggest and best surprise were the wahoo.  It’s about that time of the year and the speedsters were hitting live bait as well as trolled Rapalas and were nice sized 20-40 pound fish with some of our pangas getting multiple fish.

BAHIA MAGDALENA REPORT

We had Eric Skinner and his son, Nathan out for a few days working those incredible mangroves at the shallow end of Bahia Magdalena on the Baja Pacific side this past week for a few days.  In fact, as you’re reading this, they’re still out there.  They got more than a dozen different species the first 2 days including, corvina, snapper, pargo, cabrilla, grouper and bay bass on light tackle.

Bahia Magdalena offers hundreds of square miles of changing current, sloughs, channels and impenetrable mangroves holding a multitude of species in the shallow waters.

 

One a single day, they estimated they hooked more than 50 fish releasing most and donating others and, of course, keeping some for dinner. Here’s a layer of fish sitting on a bed of ice in the ice chest with about a 1/2 dozen different species.

Nathan and dad, Eric, fishing right up in the mangrove bushes were catching garopa (grouper) like these and releasing most.

A good day back at the fish cleaning table!

That’s a mess of corvina, plus pargo, grouper and even a halibut. Most fish had been released.

As mentioned, at the time of doing this report, they still had a few more days fishing Mag Bay so we’ll have more updates in next week’s report.

THE BIG PICTURE and REST OF THE STORY…

Now this is a yellowtail! Just off Espirito Santo Island, Desmond Sjaufoekloy took this hefty beast earlier in the week.

Just when we were getting all comfortable and figured winter was done with us, I had a feeling she still had a few gusts left in her.  Sure enough, like “Game or Thrones” winter came back to remind us we’re not quite out’ve range yet.

 

The week started out sort or OK.  But we could tell it was going to ramp up again.  Our folks got a nice mix of fish including yellowtail, some big fat cabrilla and other species plus a smattering of dorado.

 

But, with each day, the winds got stronger.  Towards the latter part of the week, it was not just gusting, it was ripping and even the La Paz Port Captain shut down all boat traffic.  No fishing…diving…swimming with whale sharks…no boats coming in and out.

 

And, I get it.  Can’t blame him.  It was blowing white caps even in the bay, even with the sun out.  Better to err on the side of safety.  Heck, even on the “calmer” days our folks were getting bounced and wet.

It did calm down just a tad by the end of the week, but not much and about the only thing we could raise in the rough water was bonito.

The coming week, it looks a little better.  Fingers crossed.

CRAZY VARIETY FOR 2nd STRAIGHT WEEK!

Micah Pettit from Utah came down with his dad for his first trip with us although dad fishes with us several times a year.  Micah stuck it to this tough yellowtail just outside Bahia Muertos his first day along with snapper, cabrilla and sierra.

Our amigo, Rod Brown from Alaska has been coming to fish with us for over a dozen years and usually during the spring . Along with nice yellowtail, he put this trophy barred pargo in the box fishing around Espirito Santo Island north of La Paz over the rocks.

From Minnesota, Jeff Brown is a pretty good fisherman on our La Paz waters and always does well as he poses with one of his nice yellowtail.

This type of rack of fish is not unusual this time of year when we can end up with alot of variety.  Here you see yellowtail, yellow snapper, sierra, cabrilla and barred pargo.

Our popular Captain Joel has reason to smile after putting the gaff to Jeff’s trophy barred pargo.  That’s Espirito Santo Island in the background.

Incredible variety this week as we hit a 2nd good week of action.   It’s what we call “transitional” time although it usually doesn’t hit until about next month.  However, it’s the time of the fishing season when it’s not winter anymore and not summer quite yet in the water.

 

Consequently, you still have the ability to catch cold-water species like cabrilla, pargo, sierra, yellowtail, amberjack, snapper and more as they still linger.  However, warm water species like dorado, tuna, wahoo, billfish, larger roosterfish are no starting to move in as well as surface waters warm.

 

Add in bonito, jack crevalle, skipjack and other year-round species and you get a lot of variety right now and that’s the kind of week we just had with great action on a number of different kinds of fish.

 

You may not get a lot of any one species, but you could finish a day with 6, 8, 10 or more different species in the box at the end of the day.  The boat right next to you have have another 3 or 4 different species.  The next day you get completely different species.  It makes for some fun fishing.

 

Still not a lot of anglers out on the water, but the ones we did have out took yellowtail, barred pargo, dog-tooth snapper, sierra, amberjack, bonito, jack crevalle, roosterfish (released), yellow snapper, cabrilla as well as tuna (lost) and wahoo (lost).  Signs of striped marlin were also seen.

 

Biggest problem is that many of the fish are in shallow water right now or over structure so lots of big fish are getting lost in the rocks but they’re willng to bite.

 

Here’s what one of our anglers had to say:

“Another great day of fishing. We caught almost 70 mackerel for bait this morning. For the third day in a row we ran out of bait by 1 o’clock because of just too many hook-ups!  . Today’s catch included  7 yellowtail, 5 nice sized cabrilla, one large barred pargo, and one sierra. The fish were tough on our equipment. The first thing they do is run for he rocks. We lost more than we boated…We also snapped one of the heavy rods on a hook set. This has never happened before!”

Despite the great fishing this week, don’t say good-bye just yet to those windy days of winter…Sunday was pretty rough and blustery again.  Will keep an eye out for you.  Stay tuned.

BAHIA MAGDALENA FISHING

We were able to send out our first anglers of the season over to the Pacific side to light-tackle fish the mangroves in the shallows of Bahia Magdalena and they had a spectacular time.  Using live bait, they had 50-60 fish days catching, releasing and donating much of their catch and also losing many fish in the tangles of roots and underwater structure.

Catches included: snook, cabrilla, spotted-bay bass, halibut, snapper, pargo, corvina, croaker, and many more!

That’s ALOT of variety and light tackle action after just one day fishing the mangrove shallows in Bahia Magdalena not including all the other fish lost and donated.

Called “lenguado” (tonguefish) in Spanish, Jorge Romero has himself a good little halibut that ate a live sardine.

You can see the tangle of mangrove roots behind Jeff Brown and how close to shore we fish in the shallows of Mag Bay, but check out the kind of fish lurking in the roots like this pargo.

Skip Coomber from San Diego has a handful of hefty yellowtail.  He and his family landed 5 between 20-30 pounds and busted off 3.  He said one spooled him on 40 pound test. The fish were taking live bait off Cerralvo Island.

On the backside of Cerralvo Island where Captain Victor found calm waters, Erika and Carolyn landed several nice yellowtail like these in the shallow waters.

He’s just called “Joel the Bald Guy” by his amigos, but he gets the last grin with ah thick yellowtail and a handful of great eating . These fish were crashing on the surface over the rocky areas.

Amigo Bob Sayre, from Chicago, was just out in front of the hotels not far from shore when he ran into some pretty fun dorado taking 5 on dead bait and losing 2. Not like the fish to be here so early in the year…nor right there in the bay!

It’s nice to have something substantive to tell you this time after last week’s report!  Even photos and better video!

We definitely had a better week of fishing which happened to co-incide with better weather  finally as spring arrived with some surprising catches.

 

Maybe the fish woke up for spring!

 

Early in the week, waters really settled down nicely and some nice quality yellowtail came to chew and seemed to pop up in several places.  These 20-30 pound forkies were hitting live bait, jigs and dead bait on the back side of Cerralvo Island, just outside of Bahia Muertos (Suenos); Punta Perrico; as well as Espirito Santo Island.  Quite a few fish, including bigger ones were lost in the rocks insofar as many of these fish were biting in shallow water either right off the rocks or over shallow structure and reefs.  The same areas produced jack crevalle, small roosters, bonito, pargo and cabrilla.  A wahoo was lost as well!

 

The surprising catches were right in the Bay of La Paz.  Pretty much right out in front of the hotels and Malecon waterfront.  Fun, 10-15 pound schools of dorado showed up literally just a few hundred yards out front in shallow water.  It might have something to do with the patches of floating sargasso weed that moved in which we usually don’t see until about May or so when waters warm.  The sargasso draws baitfish which hide in the weeds as well as flying fish that lay eggs in the floating paddies.  This draws the dorado in searching for food.   A good sign of an early season!  Fingers crossed.

 

It’s been a brutal winter up north as well as in Baja and I have a feeling that winter isn’t quite done with us just yet!

AND SO IT ENDS!

Our 2019 Show Tour comes to an end!  After almost 4 months on the road driving to the most awesome fishing/ hunting expos in the west and hauling our booth back and forth across the country through one of the most crazy winters ever, we come to our last show…and it’s a good one!

But first a big shout out to all the amigos and Tailhunter Tribe members who came to see us and welcomed us and extended so much hospitality and smiles as we traveled to these cities and all the cities in between:

Denver show to Sacramento…then to Puyallup (Seattle)…then to Portland…and Salt Lake City…then Boise…after which we hit the Fred Hall Show in Long Beach…then Bakersfield and back to Salt Lake City again.  Then just finishing up a great show in Scottsdale AZ.

Back and forth and up and down, what a fantastic country we have and are blessed to visit every year!  Thank you all and for those of you who booked with us, we’ll do our best to have the fish and sunshine waiting for you!

Now, we head to the beaches of San Diego for the Fred Hall Fishing and Boating Show at the Del Mar Fairgrounds just north of the city.  This is a fun show and all our friends are there and it’s a big party with lots to see and do for the whole family about fishing, hunting, camping, boating, and so much more.

NOT MUCH GOING ON TO BE HONEST

This is gonna be short.

I’ve been doing this report for over 20 years every single weekend.  And I’ve only missed something like 6 weeks the whole time.  And you know I always tell it straight up…good…bad…or otherwise.

Well, I guess I could make something up but, that’s not how I roll.

So, here it is. (drumroll…)   Nothing to report.

While the rest of the country was getting “winterized” again for the umpteenth time this season,  the winds blew again in La Paz which isn’t surprising.  That’s why November to April is called “off-season” and why so many windsurfers and kite-boarders descend on the area from all over the world during these months. Cuz it’s WINDY!  There was even a bit of rain one day early in the week.

And why not many people fishing.

We did have some folks request to go out, but the days they wanted to go out, I advised them not to.  I told ’em, I’d love to take their money, but that they’d be wasting their time and it would be best just to hang out and not go out and get bounced around and get wet.  Not much fun in that.  I want everyone to have a good time.

On the 2 days that looked fishable, no one asked to go out.  I think they would have gotten some fish.   Oh well.  I did hear there were some dorado right in the bay.  And there were some bonito out as well, but that was about it.  Just not many folks out.

BACK ON the TRAIL

Jilly and I were split apart this past weekend.  Each of us at a different show.  I was there at the ISE SHOW in Sandy UT, just south of Salt Lake and it was great to see so many amigos and meet new ones.  Thanks for everyone who came by and also for all the kind gifts as well!

Jilly wrapped up the Fred Hall Show in Bakersfield.  It was her first time doing that show by herself and we appreciate everyone who looked in on her and stopped to chat.

But now, onto Scottsdale, Arizona.  I pick up Jilly in Las Vegas and we’ll drive south to the ISE Show that starts Thursday and runs to Sunday.  It’s at the Westworld facility there in Scottsdale.

After that…last show of the season and 3 months on the road will be at the Del Mar Fairgrounds in San Diego.

The Big Picture and the Rest of the Story…

Early in the week hogs like Carl Lange’s hefty yellowtail were hanging in the shallow waters willing to take the baits, but as the week went on the fish got harder to find.

From Paso Robles, Joel Zarmati was fishing live bait over shallow rocks on the lee side of Cerralvo Island where the waters were calmer and sheltered from the winds when he hooked and landed this big-headed yellowtail.

A little early in the season for warm-water dorado, but nonetheless, Al Hutchinson brought this one back to the beach for the dinner table.

Tasty huachinango/ dog-tooth snapper right there in Bahia Muertos by our amiga, Donna Thompson. These guys can grow well over 50 or 60 pounds.

Great photo! Great fish! Donna can fish! Check out the size and colors of this trophy yellowtail off Cerralvo Island.

It was a hit-or-miss kind of fishing week.  The windsurfers and kite boarders had fun with the continuing winds, but even on the few days that were fishable, the few anglers out found it less than stellar although some fish were caught.  There are some quality fish around, that seem like they’re just waiting to bust loose and as winter pulls away, it’s like we two steps forward then 1 ½ steps back each week.

 

It just doesn’t pay to get too excited.  Last week, I was optimistic that maybe we were finally getting something going with some hog yellowtail, dorado, wahoo and even a tuna hookup and a marlin hook-up!  These are all species we generally don’t see this early in the year.  Things seemed like they were picking up!

 

Then, Mother Nature kinda slapped us back in place.  The yellowtail bite near Punta Perico and over at Cerralvo Island diminished significantly.  Bait got a little harder to find…again!  And overall, we were left with a smattering of dorado; some snapper; a cabrilla or two (although a few were trophy-sized) and lots of bonito.  Oh, and one marlin just to keep us excited.  Overall just kind of a ho-hum week, even for this time of the year.

 

The coming week looks promising.  Early, there’s some strong winds and there’s a possibility of rain, but then they really drop back quite a bit for the majority of the week.  That will hopefully kick the fish up again.

Just wrapping up a spectacular over-the-top show at the Fred Hall Fishing Show in Long Beach CA at the Convention Center.  The largest fishing and boating show in the world and over 1000 vendors from all over the world packed in the crowds and Jill and I talked non-stop for 5 full days.

We had a blast!  Thanks to everyone who stopped by and said hi and everyone who set up trips to see us this year in La Paz.  It was a fantastic party!

But now…no rest!  By the time you’re reading this, we’re in our Tailhunter-Mobile and zooming back to Utah for the International Sportsmans Show at the Expo Center in Sandy, Utah…just south of Salt Lake City.  This is always a fun show and we have a ba-jillion Tailhunter amigos in the area.  Hope to see you all!

BETTER WEATHER – BETTER FISHING…FINALLY!

THE BIG PICTURE and the REST of the STORY….

Carl Lange took down our first wahoo of the season just outside of Bahia Muertos! Crazy March catch!

 

OH man…this is a hog yellowtail! Roger Thompson with Captain Hugo knocked this guy out at the north end of Cerralvo Island slow trolling sardines in about 12′ of water! They got 5, but lost others they couldn’t stop.

 

Our Bakersfield amigo, Ken Gragg, loves to fish this time of year, even in the crazy weather and it paid off with a big-headed yellowtail later in the week.

The cabrilla queen herself, Donna Thompson from La Ventana has stuck so many of these big cabrilla over the years and she did it again at Cerralvo Island in shallow water.

You can tell it’s a bit cold and nippy as well as choppy, but Carl Lange probably doesn’t feel a thing except big smiles over another nice yellowtail.

We’ve got the whalesharks in the by of La Paz again. Had about a dozen this week and later in the week when winds calmed down, we were able to put some folks in the water to go swimming with them in the shallows.

It’s an incredible experience snorkeling with our La Paz whalesharks in the bay. The “babies” are only about 15 feet long or so.

The week started pretty blustery with white caps even in the normally calm La Paz Bay.  Actually, for this time of the year, that’s not unusual.  Fortunately, we didn’t have anyone out fishing, but we probably could not have gone out anyway.

 

However, as the week went on, winds diminished somewhat, at least enough to get out although there was still some chop and it was good to have a jacket or sweatshirt on.

 

Fishing out’ve Bahia de los Muertos, we hit quite a mix of fish, especially for so early in the year with warm water species mixing with the normal cold water species.  Big cabrilla, jack crevalle and both white bonito and skipjack kept the rods bent as well as smaller snapper and pargo.  However, we also got some legit yellowtail over structure and topped it with some flurries of dorado and even wahoo.

 

Live bait is still hard to come by with all the rough water, but we’re dragging lures and using dead bait pretty effectively and the fishing is not too far off the beach.

 

It was also calm enough to get out to swim with the whalesharks in La Paz Bay.  We had as many as a dozen in the shallow waters, but on the choppy days it’s hard to see them let alone swim with them.

TUESDAY Mar. 5th JONATHAN’s BD BEER PARTY in LONG BEACH

If you’re gonna be in Long Beach Tuesday night, after we set up our booth at the Long Beach Convention Center, we traditionally head over to Joe Jost’s Bar and have some beers under the pretense of it being my birthday.  It’s my 62nd and we hope to be there about 6:30.  Totally informal.

Joe Josts has been there since 1924!  All the serve is beer…and sausage sandwiches…and pickled eggs…and liverwurst sandwiches…and egg salad sandwiches and pretzels and peanuts!  It’s like stepping back in time as I mark my time! It’s cheap and it’s fun! Just my style!

Spoiler alert!  This week’s video report was NOT filmed in La Paz!  But, it makes it easier to sell sunshine and warm sandy beaches in places like this!   Thank you, Oregon!

 

The Big Picture and the Rest of the Story…

The week started well with lower winds and calmer seas for once.  Not many anglers in town, but we had a few and surprisingly got into some water-water action with a handful of dorado popping up.  Nothing big, but it’s surprising to get dorado in the winter and for first-timers hooking an acrobatic 10 or 15 pound dorado is pretty exciting.

In addition, jack crevalle, good numbers of fat bonito plus some cabrilla over the rocks provided fun action, especially on light tackle.  As the week went on, winds came up and it got colder and rougher..enough to bend the palm trees and put little white-caps on the bay.

TAILHUNTER WHALE WATCHING SEASON FULL ON

By the time you’re reading this, we’ve left snowy cold Portland Oregon and headed to….snowy cold Salt Lake City, Utah!  But, first a shout-out to Portland and all of our amigos in the Pacific NW for all the hospitality and ohana after 3 week in one of our favorite places.

It was off-the charts with shows in the Seattle and Portland area.  Lots of you are coming to see us in La Paz this year so we’re looking forward to seeing you again!

Something a little different this week.  Sorry the video is a little ragged this week.  We were in our booth at the Puyallup Fairgrounds and crowds were already starting to come down the aisle and watching some goofy guy (me!) talking out loud to his laptop!  So I didn’t have much time!

Also, no real fishing to report so I answered some letters in the video about fishing in La Paz!

The Big Picture and the Rest of the Story…

Honestly not much to say about fishing this week.  I guess I could make something up, but that’s now how we roll.

This is winter and off-season and not many folks out fishing from November to April.  Mostly, it’s because of the winds and waves that can be very erratic.   So, that’s what happened this week.

We did have a few folks set to fish early in the week, but it was pretty rough.  So, as much as they wanted to go, I advised they just cancel. Stay at the hotel. Hang out at the pool.  Go to town of lunch.  Sleep in.  Take a siesta.

Fishing is supposed to be fun, right?  Not an excercise in staying dry and trying to stay in the boat.  Many of the folks we have this time of year aren’t hard-core anglers.  For some it’s their first time really fishing in the ocean so I don’t want them to have a bad time.  As much as we love the business, especially this time of year, it was better to just advise folks not to come out.

Not much bait around but plugs and lures are working.

However, when the wind isn’t blowing, there’s some dorado out there.  Pargo and cabrilla and snapper are still around the reefs and rocks.

Sierra, bonito and jack crevalle near the drop offs.  This coming week, the winds die down about mid-week so hopefully, I”ll have a better report for you!

TAILHUNTER ROAD TOUR 2019

Thanks, Washington!  Now on our way to Portland!

Well, we just finished our 3rd show of the season.  We’re wrapping things up here in the Seattle area and packing to head to our next show at the Portland Expo Center in Portland, Oregon Sept. 6-10.  We’ve had some fantastic shows so far!   We’ve been in Denver, Sacramento and then this past week in Seattle.

Reservations are coming in fast this year!  Don’t wait until we visit your area!  Dates are filling up so get in touch with us as soon as you can if you’re planning to come fishing!

Short Attention Span Week at a Glance

Weather – Variable.  Some days were pretty windy and rough.  Others were nice.  Some localized showers.  Highs were in the high 70’s.  Nighttime lows low 60’s.

Water – You’d think it should be cooler than normal, but the fact that dorado are around indicates some warm waters.

Fishing – If the weather was good, it was fishable and some surprising catches with a nice mixed bag.  If weather was not so good, then it made it tough.  Live bait is not easy to get because of the erratic water.  However, lures and dead bait seem to work fine.  Got dorado, skipjack, bonito, jack crevalle, small yellowtail and sierra this week.  Everyone got fish!

Forecast – Some high winds early in the week.  Probably won’t be fishing.  Then, gets better.  Highs in the low 70’s and lows to the high 50’s.  Partially cloudy skies.

Chuck Chandler from Alaska and staying at Rancho Costa there in Muertos Bay near La Paz found some great sunshine and this big-headed bull dorado (mahi mahi) that no doubtedly hit the grill.

It was an up-and-down week dictated by the weather and winds which is typical of this time of the year.  Earlier in the week it was calm although there were some incidents of localized rain mixed with sunshine.  Later in the week, winds got stronger generating some rougher water.

 

Surprisingly, however, given it’s winter and waters are chillier than normal, we got into some decent school-sized dorado.  Bait is difficult to get because of the winds and choppy surf, but dragging lures has been productive.

 

In addition to the dorado, tasty white bonito provided some great action.  Many folks are surprised that the white bonito are not just great sport, but also pretty good eating!  Add in some tough jack crevalle and a few firecracker yellowtail, sierra and cabrilla off the rocks and there were actually some nice catches.

TAILHUNTER 2019 TOUR

Just finished up our Sacramento Show for the International Sportsmans Expo that was at the state fairgrounds.   It was off-the-hook!  Jill and I stood and talked non-stop for 10 hours-a-day until we were hoarse!  It was great.  So many friends and new amigos.  Lots of bookings for this year.

If you’re planning on coming fishing with us, don’t wait. Dates are filling FAST!  I’m not kidding. Bookings are coming in daily and we’re booking dozens at every show.  Don’t wait.  Some dates are filled or filling fast.  If you wait until we come to a show near you, it might be too late!

If you’re reading this, we’re actually probably on the road driving from Sacramento to our next show at the Washington State Fairgrounds in Puyallup, Washington just south of Seattle.  This is the largest show in Washington and goes a whopping 5 days from Wednesday to Sunday.  We always look forward to it.
