Maybe the La Paz Malecon will be open after May 30th? Almost feels like there should be some tumbleweeds blowing across the street.

TUEDAY May 12- Mexico recorded it’s highest number of deaths for a single day of 353 fatalities. (Mexico Daily News)

Short story…no fishing to report. Ports and Marinas still closed down as well as beaches and hotels.

So…

Since the beginning of the Baja quarantine, I’ve been doing my best to keep y’all posted. Folks are asking where I’m getting my info. As I may have mentioned, I’ve become a news junkie lately.

For my wife and I and our employees in Mexico, our livlihood and your vacations depend on it.

So, here’s some links below that have daily updates. The three newspapers are in Spanish, but will translate to English automatically. Might not be grammatically correct all the time, but you’ll get the idea.

One thing you’ll notice is that what the governor of one Mexican state says is often different from what the Mexican President says…is different from what a city mayor says…is different from what the business people say…and is completely different from what the health officials and doctors say.

And everyone LOVES to point fingers!

The curve is up…the curve is down. This is “under control.” We are “not ready for this.” It’s the “President’s fault.” We don’t care “what the government says.” Face masks work. Face mask don’t work. Blah blah blah…

Sound familiar? As different as we are, the more we are the same.

State of Baja Norte (Tijuana, Ensenada/ Mexicali/ San Felipe ) 2,300 cases/ 365 deaths
State of Baja Norte (Cabo San Lucas, La Paz, Loreto, Mulege) 373 cases/ 22 deaths

The Baja quarantine is still in effect until May 30th, with health officials saying the next week or two will be the apex of the pandemic.

HOWEVER…just as I was putting this report together, the governor or Southern Baja, Carlos Mendoza Davis, and the health officials are now saying they probably will NOT re-open June 1 as it is one of several Mexican states where the virus has not flattened.

Good writing and in English! Short stories like a smaller version of USA TODAY. Main stories are free. A few of the more in-depth stories you need a subscription for $2.50 a month. But, I haven’t needed it yet. I think even if COVID wasn’t around, I think I would enjoy this website.

This site IS EXACTLY like reading USA TODAY. Lots of good short articles about Baja, Mexico from news to sports to culture plus international news.

By the way, because a lot of these articles are translated from Spanish, “PEACE” is actually “LA PAZ” which is the the word for “Peace.” So, whenever you see that they are referring to the City of La Paz.

In a past life many many galaxies and lifetimes ago, I was a TV, radio and newspaper reporter. I was also a litigation attorney. There’s always several sides to every story. I learned to read and watch ALOT of different sources. Everyone slants their news or their version of events one way or the other, either intentionally or unintentionally.

You’re really doing yourself a disservice if you only get your news and stories from one source. That’s why I read from so many different sources and suggest you do the same. You’re smart enough that you can sort out what’s truly relevant to you and where each source if really coming from. Kinda like if you only get your news from CNN or FOX or only read the Los Angeles Times, etc.

My personal opinion, for what it’s worth, is that Baja Sur is gearing up to open after May 30th. That includes restaurants, hotels and other facilities.

Many locals have been ignoring the restrictions from the beginning or finding ways to circumvent the quarantine whether that be having private parties; descending on the beaches; using social media to find their way around police roadblocks, operating past curfews and blackmarketing “non-essential items.” Once businesses start re-opening, it’s going to be hard to shut them down again. Or keep people inside. Even if that is in defiance of the quarantine.

Remember, this isn’t like the U.S. There’s alot of people living together in small spaces. There’s often no TV. There’s no internet. Without work, there is no food. I think they will have a difficult time keeping people inside.

But…also, just because businesses re-open does NOT mean tourists, the lifeblood of the economy, will return in right away or in big numbers. That’s the key. Hotels and restaurants might unilaterally shut themselves down if no one shows up.

And then again, it begs the question on all our our minds. What will the new “NORMAL” be like?

I think fishing will be just fine.

But, if beaches are technically still closed. If restaurants are still closed or no one is in them? If the bars and clubs aren’t really open or if not really anyone is on the street, that’s all part of the vacation and fun…it’s the “BAJA EXPERIENCE.” Will tourists still come? Will fishermen still come?

Your guess is as good as mine.

We are planning to be back home the first week of June…all things considered.

Although no one is allowed to be Sportfishing, if there’s a bright side to the quarantine which is set through May 30th, is that we’re witnessing Mother Nature on the rebound. As we have seen throughout many places in the world, the absence of a human presence has demonstrated a remarkable change in wildlife and the environment.

Local waters and skies have been among the clearest that many people can remember. Trash on the beaches has disappeared.

There are reports of baitfish and sportfish showing up in numbers, locations and sizes that we haven’t seen in a long time. The variety has been incredible. Inshore rock and reef fish like pargo, yellowtail and amberjack are crashing shallow water baits like sardines, ballyhoo and mackerel. Yellowtail have even been seen in the marinas. Big roosterfish are cruising the beaches, but also schools of the roosters are right on the malecon where normally thousands of people are walking and driving every day. Dorado schools with fish up to 30 and 40 pounds are wondering where everyone went. Tuna over 100 pounds are at the islands. Add in jack crevalle, sierra, bonito, cabrilla and others and it’s great to see.

I can only say that when we finally kick off the season, things should be super hopefully with big hungry fish!

Among so many complaints we are hearing these days is that there’s NO BEER! Although there aren’t any real shortages of mechandise in the markets, one noticeable space on the shelves is the beer aisle. Because breweries like Modelo (makers of Corona and many other brands) as well as Tecate (which also brews and distributes a number of brands), were labeled as non-essential businesses, they were shut down.

So, like toilet paper in the U.S., beer has become a crisis item. People hoarded it at the beginning. Now, if any shows up on the shelves, it quickly disappears. Markets are jacking the prices up to 300% of normal retail. As well, an illegal closet industry of people selling beer from their homes, online like Facebook, or out’ve the trunks of their cars has sprung up.

Because so many people were ignoring the quarantine, the governor has changed the curfew from 10 p.m. to 8 p.m. No one out after that hour. No more food sales allowed. Any businesses that defy the rules (as many were) are subject to 17,000 pesos fines.

ONE OF OUR OWN!

Our Don Hugo! Good friend and gentleman is in the hospital.
Although La Paz has relatively few cases of the virus among more than 150,000 residents one of our Tailhunter Team members is now hospitalized.

If you’ve gone to fish with our Tailhunter Fleet at Bahia Muertos/ Las Arenas you were probably driven in our van by Hugo. He’s a great fun guy and a big favorite of our fishermen and their families. Always smiling and he’s been an incredible part of our team.

Since the shutdown, Hugo has been working picking up odd-jobs as a carpenter which was his trade when he lived in the U.S. He started to show symptoms about 2 weeks ago and is now hospitalized in serious condition with the virus.

Our prayers and best wishes are with our amigo. If there’s a bright spot, it’s that we’re glad he’s in La Paz which has some of the best medical care in the state and the best facilities for handling the disease.

When will this end? When can we start fishing? Alot of hotels and restaurants are gearing up to open as soon as the quarantine in Baja ends on May 30th. Airlines are saying they will start flying again in June as well. Assuming there are no drastic changes that hit the country, we can only be optimistic!

Popular Captain Ramon “Moncho” Green went north to Espirito Santo Island and took this 80-pound yellowfin tuna and several big 20-pound class yellowtail using sardines.

Gary Wagner, who owns the Rancho Costa there in Muertos has been a bright spot in getting us photos these past few weeks since he’s able to get his own boat right off the beach and go fishing. He sure has a colorful dorado here. Thanks, Gary.

Alot of you know our great Captain Pancho. His son Carlos is growing up (heck of a guitar player too!) and looks he definitely has dad’s fishing DNA. Big tasty pompano in the boat!

Wish I could say things were better, but no one out on the water. Even the locals are having an issue with fishing for personal consumption. The ports have been closed for several weeks now to all traffic, but there’s quite a bit of confusion over whether local fishermen can fish for their families. Some think no problem and are out. But others have been stopped and told they can only be out if they have permits and apparently the paper process is lengthy and confusing in itself.

From the couple of reports that I did get from local fishermen, there’s some nice jags of 25-pound class yellowtail around both Espirito Santo Island and Cerralvo Island. Tuna up to 70-pounds also at the north end of Cerralvo with scattered schools of dorado moving in as waters warm up. Roosterfish have started showing up near the beaches as well as pargo liso started their yearly spawn. No shortage of bonito either.

Tons of bait. No fishermen.

RIPPED FROM THE HEADLINES (AS OF APRIL 22)

Mexico almost has over 10,000 confirmed virus cases a jump of over 3,000 in a single week.
Coronavirus deaths are over 950 and climbing daily. Three weeks ago it was 125.
Health officials think that as many as 54,000 is a true number of cases because of so many unreported cases and very little testing.
Four Mexican states with more than 33 million residents are not reporting any statistics because they do not want to violate people’s privacy or “cause panic.”
More than 200 municipalities in 10 Mexican states have closed their roads unilaterally to prevent anyone from entering or leaving the towns.
Hospitals in Mexico City are already almost at capacity.
Baja (states of Baja Norte and Baja Sur) has almost 800 confirmed cases with 38 deaths.
Baja has the highest incidence of infection per capita in the country. Mexico City has the 2^nd highest per 100,000 people.
Baja has extended the quarantine past the original April 30^th In the absence of something changing, the quarantine is now extended to May 30^th.
Health officials estimate that only about 60% of the population are adhering to the quarantine. Many are ignoring the mandates while law enforcement and the military continue to chase people off beaches, public areas and gathering locations.
Healthcare workers are pleading for non-existent personal protection while now themselves becoming targeted for attacks by people who say the workers are spreading the disease.
There’s no stimulus checks, unemployment or health insurance (socialized medicine). In fact 40% of the working population aren’t even on anyone’s books. They work as laborers, vendors and other “cash-only” workers.
The Mexico Undersecretary of Health has not recommended face masks because it gives people a “false sense of security.”

EASTER WEEK IN LOCKDOWN

THE BIG PICTURE and the REST of the STORY…

East side of Cerralvo Island is still holding sizeable yellowtail in shallow water not far off the beach like this one that Miles Wagner took. He’s been staying at his dad’s place at Bahia Muertos now for almost a month so still has the ability to go fishing now that his school back in Colorado is shut down.

La Paz resident, Erik Holthouse was with his brother Juan were out at Bahia Muertos with Captain Moncho and found a nice school of dorado.

Gary Wagner who lives there in Bahia Muertos has thankfully kept sending me photos and has the ability to fish very easily there and has been on top of the yellowtail schools all week and for the past month.

Not much if anyone fishing at all except gringos who live in the area or locals. And even then, not much and the waters are empty. However, the few reports we got this week showed there are still slugger yellowtail around especially the rocky areas around Espirito Santo Island and Cerralvo Island on the northeast side.

More schools of dorado in the 5-15 pound class also becoming more prevalent as the waters warm. There’s a nice spawn of those big mullet snapper (pargo liso) that have shown up. If you can get one of these horses to the boat in that shallow water, they’ve been 15-20 pounders in the school.

Aguamarga on the road to Las Arenas basically says all visitors and you’re not welcome.

More Todos Santos – basically says stay at home. This is not for vacation. There is a national quarantine. Be responsible. Sorry for the inconvenience. Thank you.

Bahia Muertos is usually covered with folks during Easter Week.

All hotels are still closed until at least April 30th. Police and military are enforcing the closure of the malecon and all beaches, especially during Holy Week/ Easter Week which has traditionally been a big beach week for Mexico with many people still ignoring the shelter-in-place laws.

Authorities are now posting signs, but the local population has also started unilaterally blocking entrances into their areas for tourists, visitors and even some of their own residents, if the residents have been out’ve the area. In an attempt to block the spread of the virus, Mulege, Loreto, San Xavier, Todos Santos, Pescadero, Cedros Island and others have all blocked their roads.

Around La Paz, the road to Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay with entrances to the pueblitos where many of the fishermen and their families live including, Aguamarga, San Pedro, Bahia Muertos, Punta Arenas and Los Alamos have blocked their roads. They’re asking everyone to please stay away and if you leave, they might not let you back in.

HEADLINES FROM MEXICO

Please remember this is a changing situation so anything you read here might have changed by the time you’re reading it.

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING, MEXICO’S VIRUS CASES HAVE MORE THAN DOUBLED IN THE LAST WEEK.

MEXICO REPORTS MORE THAN 5000 CASES WITH OVER 300 DEATHS. HEALTH OFFICIALS THINK THE UNOFFICIAL COUNT IS PROBABLY OVER 20,000 CASES SINCE NOT MUCH TESTING OR OFFICIAL REPORTING IS GOING ON.

IN THE SPAN OF A WEEK, BAJA HAS BECOME THE #1 HIGHEST RATE OF VIRUS INCIDENT (PER CAPITA) THAN ANY OTHER PLACE IN MEXICO BEHIND ONLY MEXICO CITY. BAJA HAS ABOUT 500 CASES AND HAS SEEN 20 DEATHS.

IT WAS A VERY SLOW EASTER WEEK WHICH IS TRADITIONALLY PACKED WITH LOCAL AND FOREIGN TOURISTS.

DESPITE THE QUARANTINE LAW ENFORCEMENT AND MILITARY HAD TO STILL CHASE MANY PEOPLE OFF THE BEACHES

ONE BEACH IN OAXACA THAT IS USUALLY COVERED WITH BATHERS IS NOW FULL OF CROCODILES THAT HAVE RETURNED AFTER DECADES OF ABSENCE.

WITH NO COORDINATED QUARANTINE PLAN MANY PEOPLE ARE STILL IGNORING THE RESTRICTIONS. THOUSANDS PACKED SHOULDER-TO-SHOULDER AT THE MEXICO CITY FISH MARKET TO PURCHASE FISH FOR GOOD FRIDAY

MUCH TO THE DISTRESS OF RETAIL GROCERY STORES, MANY VENDORS HAVE TURNED TO SELLNG PRODUCE, MEAT AND OTHER ITEMS FROM THE SIDE-OF-THE-ROAD AT PRICES HUGELY BELOW RETAIL

HEALTH CARE WORKERS ARE REFUSING TO WORK BECAUSE OF THE LACK OF MEDICAL EQUIPMENT SUPPLIES AND EQUIPMENT FOR THEIR OWN SAFETY

SADLY, HEALTH CARE WORKERS ARE ALSO BEING ATTACKED IN SOME CITIES BECAUSE PEOPLE THINK THE HEALTH CARE WORKERS WILL CARRY THE DISEASE INTO THE COMMUNITY.

SANITATION STATIONS FOR HAND WASHING HAVE BEEN SET UP IN VARIOUS CITIES. HOWEVER, PEOPLE HAVE BEEN STEALING THE SANITATION STATIONS.

MANY CITIES AHVE ENACTED “DRY LAWS” PROHIBITING LIQUOR SALES OF ANY KIND. CABO SAN LUCAS INITIALLY WAS PART OF THAT GROUP, BUT HAS SINCE CHANGED THE RULE ONLY RESTRICTING THE HOURS FOR ALCOHOL SALES. “PEOPLE NEED ALCOHOL TO STAY CALM DURING THE STRESS.”

BREWERIES LIKE CORONA/MODELO WERE SHUT DOWN TWO WEEKS AGO DEEMED “NON-ESSENTIAL” BUSINESS. THE SECRETARY OF AGRICULTURE ALLOWED THEM TO RE-OPEN LAST WEEK…FOR ONE DAY…THEN THE SECRETARY OF HEALTH OVER-RODE THE EDICT AND SHUT THE BREWERIES DOWN AGAIN.

Hope you all had a good, safe, and healthy Easter all things considered. Jill and I are still stuck in the states. There’s no flights from where we have our house and there’s nothing to go back to at the moment in La Paz. No fishermen. No fishing. Our restaurant is closed. The hotel we live at is closed. So, we’re staying put like so many of you and still grateful and blessed to have a roof and food and yes…even toilet paper and paper towels!

After almost a month of staying away from family, we finally had a little get together with our two kids and two grandkids Easter Sunday for a little chicken on the barbecue. Nothing spectacular. Just good to see them after so long and not be talking on Facetime. It was Jill’s birthday this past weekend and we were all supposed to be in Hawaii for the weekend, but that understandably got canceled.

We are eating too much, watching more TV than ever, catching up on reading and I’m getting more sleep than ever in my life. Usually, by this time of year, we’re getting 3-4 hours of sleep a night and now, there’s no alarm jolting me awake at 4 a.m. to put the fishermen out. But, we’re still working hard trying to keep everyone abreast of what’s happening and/or calming folks down who don’t know what’s going on. Hopefully, we’ll get to the other side of this sooner rather than later.

I can tell alot of you are at home and on your cellphones or computers. I must get about 100 jokes, memes and videos every day. I just can’t watch them all or respond to them all but thanks for thinking of us!

FISH BITING BUT BAJA GOES INTO LOCKDOWN

THE BIG PICTURE and the REST of the STORY…

Scott McClure was fishing with local friends before the shutdown and caught our first rooster fish of the season near Cerralvo Island. The fish was released. Captain Beto from La Ventana was running the panga.

When you’re staying at your dad’s place at Bahia Muertos, it’s easier to get in a little early evening fishing. Miles Wagner’s dad owns the Rancho Costa resort in Bahia Muertos near La Paz and got out to fish the nearby rocks where the big pargo have shown up. They lost quite a few of the tough fish even with their drags buttoned down, but Miles put this big pargo liso (mullet snapper) in the boat. Miles normally lives in Colorado Springs CO, but with school closed down, he’s spending the off-time fishing in Baja.

Phil Perrone from Oregon was out with our La Paz amigo, Keith Wiliams, where they worked that area on the east side of Cerralvo Island and boated a few nice yellowtail like this one.

He’s always into fish! Keith Williams moved to La Paz a couple of years ago and is able to spend a fair amount of time fishing. He took some friends out before the lockdown last week and added this schoolie dorado to the fish box.

Gary Wagner sits in a sweet spot at his place in Muertos Bay, Rancho Costa and he’s on prime waters. He got this rare hawkfish (china maru) just down the beach off the rocks fro his place.

Roger and Captain Hugo both wore masks while fishing but took his off for this pose with his yellowtail.

Hard to believe that dorado this big are running around in April, but Tailhunter Captain, Luis Martinez took this big bull north of La Paz.

Like everywhere else, the world has changed drastically in Baja which finally jumped in to full-lockdown this past week.

Good news is that the fish are biting and there’s alot of variety. Some of the best fishing of the season.

The bad news is that the only ones fishing are locals or folks who have their own boats. All commercial and Sportfishing activities have been banned. By national decree, all the beaches and public beaches are shut down. All hotels have closed as of April 5 until 30th (but maybe longer). Any one hanging out, we evicted.

All restaurants are closed. The La Paz Malecon is closed. All the ports have closed. In Cabo, and a number of other cities all alcohol sales of any kind have been prohibited. In some cities, even drinking alcohol is now being stopped. La Paz is probably not far behind.

On land and water, sadly, it’s a ghost town and the military and police are enforcing the restrictions. Many people are expecting a curfew soon.

But, on the water, the fish haven’t been on lockdown. It’s like Murphy’s Law.

We’re seeing our first roosterfish of the season. The big mullet snapper (pargo liso) have started to spawn and are showing up in the shallows. Dorado between 10 and 30 pounds are cruising through the warmer currents. Closer inshore, cabrilla, snapper and sierra are holding. There are also all the bonito you could want and yellowtail up to about 25 pounds can be found around structure, banks and reefs. And, there’s live bait too! Oh, and the weather has been pretty good too with temps in the low to mid-80’s although some very strong winds are predicted for this week.

RIPPED FROM THE HEADLINES (always wanted to say that)…

Just to give you a quick nutshell of what’s going on in Mexico, here’s some bullet points of information. Just please keep in mind that things are changing daily and rapidly. Anything you read here might and probably will have changed by the time you are reading this:

The Mexican government is finally asking folks to stay home although President Obrador continues to go out meeting and hugging people and shaking hands ignoring his own edicts. His own health officials say it’s too little to late.
The government this week has officially closed all beaches, public areas and non-essential businesses.All hotels in the nation will be closed from April 5-30th. Anyone trying to stay has/ will be evicted. Staffs have been sent home. Administrators are trying to work from home. So, all La Paz hotels are now shuttered.
The government shut down the beaches and public areas because when schools and businesses were closed last week, many people decided it was “vacation” time and thousands headed to the beach.Mexico does not have many outbreaks…so far…and less than 100 fatalities. However, experts do not find the statistics reliable because Mexico does not have the means to test many people.
The La Paz Malecon has been shut down. Army and police are enforcing the lockdown.
All restaurants have closed.
Mexico has 133 million people, but only 400 ICE beds. High obesity, diabetes and heart disease are rampant in the population which is between 10 and 15% of the population.
Many places are ignoring the requirements for social distancing. About 60% of the working population are from the “unofficial economic sector” and work day-to-day and hand-to-mouth existence as vendors, laborers, street works. If they stop work, they don’t eat.As many as
10 million Mexicans do not have access to water so “washing hands” is pretty much out’ve the question.
A growing number of cities, including Cabo San Lucas have banned all alcohol sales completely. The fear is that with so many people locked-down, violence from drinking will increase.
A number of breweries such as Corona/Modelo have or are shutting down since there are no distributions points any longer. Some of the breweries are converting to manufacturing anti-bacterial gel.
Panic buying has already started. But, it is not toilet paper. People are starting to go crazy buying cartloads of beer and hoarding.
Some Mexican cities are blocking the roads so no outsiders may enter. The government says it is illegal but locals are putting up roadblocks.
Airports are generally open, but there are very very few flights with many airlines canceling services.
There is a growing interest to close the borders of Mexico to Americans so they don’t bring down more infections.
Mexico is asking Americans to please stay home.A group of 70 University of Texas students flew a charter to Cabo San Lucas on spring break. When they came back 44 of them tested positive for the virus.
Many Americans were shooting across the border from California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas to shop in Mexico which has not had the depletions of goods in grocery stores. That being said, places like Costco have huge lines and are now limiting customers.The U.S. State Department is telling all Americans to come home immediately or be prepared to stay in Mexico for an indefinite period of time.

SADLY ADIOS TO OUR TAILHUNTER RESTAURANT AFTER 13 YEARS…

LOTS OF FUN TIMES!

It’s been a difficult several weeks trying to keep Tailhunter Restaurant open. Jilly worked tirelessly trying to make it go using only “take out” but more importantly to save everyone’s jobs. Many of our employees have been with us for many great years.

With the national closing of ALL restaurants, there were not many options.

We resolved it to the best of our capabilities. Cantina is officially closed indefinitely.

The nation has closed all restaurants until April 30th. Then, they think this will all go away. We know better. Mexico hasn’t even begun to get sick yet.

Closing was the in the best interests of our staff and economically better for us than keep going 30 days…then another 30 days…ad infinitum bleeding money because we would still have the same costs plus having to pay everyone their full salaries. We were not allowed to lay anyone off during the pandemic.

However, by completely closing the restaurant, we are best able to take care of the employees so they do not have to worry. They have money and we continued their health insurance. It’s not like they have other places to find work right now with everything closed.

Consequently…

We paid all employees three full months generous salaries, with full benefits, all earned and accrued vacations and bonuses. They can go home and sit this out safely and not have to wait for the other shoe to drop and should have a buffer to find work on the other side. They are all highly skilled, trained and prized food and beverage industry workers. The best we could do for them…

When the dust settles on this Covid mess, we will then turn all attention, time and talent to getting the fishing company up and running full steam asap. 60 more families of captains, drivers, caterers and managers are counting on us, not even to mention the resorts and their staff, taxi drivers etc…..

We are tremendously touched by the outpouring of sentiments via e-mails, phone calls and social media from around the world as well as our La Paz community. Tailhunter Nation is the best!

THE BIG PICTURE and the REST of the STORY…

Captain Pancho got out one day with his son and were dragging a Rapala when they hit up this big husky yellowtail.

Visiting his dad in Bahia Muertos, Miles Wagner from Colorado Springs, Colorado has time off from school so he’s been fishing the last two weeks and found a some sweet spots of pargo on the far east side of Cerralvo Island near La Paz. This is that time of year when the big pargo liso like this come into the shallows to spawn.

Prime time ceviche if I know what Gary Wagner will do with this nice sierra. Despite being a member of the mackerel family, sierra have a delicate white flesh that is incredibly tasty.

Captain Luis fishes with our Tailhunter La Paz fleet and has been fishing with family north of La Paz but was out alone and stuck this pair of slugger yellowtail towards Espirito Santo Island using live bait.

Mixed weather conditions but generally flat seas and a decent bite on yellowtail and other species. Just no one really fishing except locals and captains with family and friends.

Temps are warming up into the 80’s and so is the fishing. The yellowtail have been biting in a number of areas and are taking sardines, mackerel, ballyhoo live baits as well as chasing slow trolled Rapalas, Yo-Zuris or jigging with iron. The fish have been chunky at times too! Some of the fish running up into the 30-pound class.

In those same areas, we’ve also had amberjack biting with some hefty fish over 50-pounds. Plus pargo, cabrilla and snapper are willing to bend rods as well. Plus add in bonito, jack crevalle and sierra and there’s no shortage of biters. Offshore a few yards, the possibility of dorado and even tuna (rumored) plus big squid are in the area.

BREAKING UPDATE…Just as I was finishing this up, Gary Wagner sent me this story about tying into a tuna he estimated at 300 pounds:

“..last Thursday was the only day of the week that was fishable. So Miles and I ran out to Cerralvo Island. After catching some Pargo, white bonita, Cabrilla and all the Skip jack you could ever want, we tied into a Tuna. Not just any tuna but the Tuna from Hell. In our 6 hour and 15 minute fight we got to see this 55 gal drum about 10 times. Over 300 lbs, we hooked the Tuna at 8:30 in the morning in 50 ft of water, and then the Tuna headed for Mazatlan. Took us due East 2 miles then turned and headed right back to where we hooked it. Then out again, the fish turned and eventually broke us off in the rocks on the North end of the Island. We were using a top shot of 30# Flouracarbon with 50# braid, so we really couldn’t pull his lips off. One heck of a father and son memory, we both could use a Chiropractor right about now.”

But, like I said, there’s no one around. Things are pretty quiet. Hotels have staff on reduced hours or skeleton crews. A few hotels are either closing or in the process of closing. Bars are closed if they are just selling alcohol, but restaurants remain open…or trying to stay open and hoping to stay afloat with food delivery.

The Marina in Cabo was closed this past week to all boat traffic and water activities and it is expected that La Paz might not be far behind. We’ll see. Changes coming daily.

JILL JONATHAN and LA PAZ

Jilly and I are still in the states dug in and hunkered down like everyone else. Our last two fishing/ hunting expos in Salt Lake City and San Diego, respectively, got canceled so we’ve come off the road and are in the same “wait-and-see” mode like most folks.

The few reservations we had for late March and April have all postponed until later in the year. Flights down are limited or non-existent as airlines have drastically curtailed flights. But, even if we went back home to La Paz, what then?

Not only are there no fishermen, but town is pretty empty. Mostly, it’s our captains fishing with their friends and family to put some meat on the table. Although there’s generally no mandatory closures in La Paz, since no one is around, many places are shuttered. New regulations have closed down bars that only serve alcohol, but restaurants like Tailhunter have been allowed to stay open because we also serve food.

However, we’ve had to move tables apart and found it necessary to severely curtail hours and regretfully, have had to let some of our employees go. Hopefully, we can remain open and keep our employees working. Just like in the U.S. we’re trying to augment business with take-out service and food specials.

Baja is taking the virus pretty seriously especially because of the state’s reliance upon tourism and the handful of cases in Baja have mostly all been related to folks who traveled or came in contact with travelers.

Mainland, Mexico, on the other hand has not been very quick to re-act. President Obregon has told the people that it’s not time to panic and they should continue with social activities, eating out, and getting together. He says Mexico is ready for anything should the virus blow up, but even one of the governors came out this week and said, “Poor people are immune from the virus.”

However, Mexican health authorities are bracing themselves. Mexico has serious problems with diabetes (10% of the population); obesity (right up there with the United States); hypertension; heart disease and other health issues. However, it does not have the ability to cope with an outbreak. Mexico City alone has 15 million people, but only 400 ICE beds in the whole city. Plus, especially in the cities, social distancing will be very difficult because of the population density with many people living in close proximity. Plus, even if closures are put into effect, something like 60-70% of the working population live day-to-day and hand-to-mouth in small mom-and-pop stands or tiny businesses. If they don’t work, they don’t eat.

So, with Jill and I, we do not want to be the ones who perhaps bring an infection to our friends, family and employees. It’s about social responsibility. Although we feel fine, we could be carriers. Even if not, we could easily pick up something in the airport, a car, the airplane…this virus is so resilient that I have problems with anyone going down to Mexico right now “for fun.”

I’ve had e-mails from folks asking me about going down “because the fishing is good; airline prices are cheap; and there’s no one else on the water!” Just my personal opinion, that until we get ahead of this thing, folks who go down right now could be the one that’s responsible for killing someone. And they’ll never know it. No way to know who is contagious because the virus can be completely asymptomatic.

So, we’re hunkered down for the time-being just like you. We’re working like crazy from home (reservations for later in the year are still coming in). Jill is making big batches of soups and casseroles to store for later. She’s organizing her office. I’m cleaning out the garage and trying (failing) to get in some work outs! We’re not hoarding, but we’ve got enough toilet paper. We’re watching movies we’ve never had time to watch together and catching up on a bit of reading and staying in touch with family on FaceTime.

Trying to stay well and keep others well. I hope you are well and stay that way also! Please take care of each other and let’s take this seriously so we can get back to normal and hopefully catch some fish!

BEST FISHING WEEK OF SEASON…BUT…

Miles Wagner is always on fish and he put the wood to several yellowtail at Punta Perrico as well as Cerralvo Island including this hefty yellow. Miles lives in Colorado Springs CO.

Yes, that’s our Captain Chito and Captain Luis out with family members and big load of meat including a big amberjack, yellowtail and dorado. This group knows how to fish!

Good guy, Gary Wagner, owner of the Giggling Marlin Bar in Cabo and Rancho Costa in Bahia Muertos with one of several dorado he took last week.

For real now, there aren’t many anglers or much of anyone in town. There weren’t many to begin with insofar as November to April is off-season, but usually this time of year, there’s an influx of spring breakers that descend on southern Baja and more snowbirds finally tired of cold winters north of the border.

However, that has pretty much come to a halt. Springbreakers understandably abruptly left. Actually, it was canceled. Lots of visitors have returned to their respective countries. Locals are hunkered down at the suggestion of the local, state and federal authorities. It’s kind of eerie out seeing much of anyone on eat beaches, streets, water, restaurants or bars. Much like the U.S. although to date, there has been only 1 confirmed case of the virus in Baja.

As we all know, changes have been almost daily, if not hourly and whatever you’re reading here could well have changed by that time.

Of course, as Murphy’s cruel law would have it, we probably just had one of the best fishing and weather weeks of the year.

Sardines and ballyhoo showed up for live bait. Even squid for the first time in years, got the commercial squid fishermen out to catch squid that came up from the deep trenches for the markets and for bait!

Winds settled down as well. So, with very few visiting anglers, captains were out catching fish for food and families taking friends, locals and family members out to fish.

With the good conditions, the production of a variety of fish was pretty remarkable. Yellowtail up to about 30 pounds were hitting off the structure and drop-offs. In those same areas, some 30-60 pound amberjack were also racked.

Over the reefs, some of those big tough pargo liso in the 15-20 pound range were getting hooked as well as an abundance of cabrilla and snapper plus bonito, jack crevalle, sierra and even some tuna were hooked (but not confirmed).

Later in the week, the winds came back and waters got colder and greener and the bite softened a bit, but overall a pretty good week to have been on the water!

Daytime temps are already in the low 80’s and supposedly the virus can’t survive in humidity and temperatures over 65. We’ll see. We can only hope.

JILL and I and TAILHUNTER STATUS

After almost 4 months on the road, Jilly and I returned to our house in the U.S. to a completely different world. Alot has changed since December as we all know.

Many of you who have followed our 2020 TAILHUNTER TOUR know that our last two shows in Salt Lake City and in San Diego got canceled so were involuntarily came back two weeks early to re-group and figure out what’s going on. Like you, we see things changing daily or even hourly. Like you we’re just waiting to see how this all plays out.

We did figure that in the last 3 months, we’ve probably come in contact with about 250,000 people in close-quarters while attending all these shows. We’ve been high-fiving, shaking hands, hugging and there’s hardaly any social distancing! We have stayed in hotel rooms and eating in restaurants every single day and night. That’s ALOT of contact!

We FEEL FINE. However, we don’t know if we might be carrying.

So, we’ve basically self-quarantined so we don’t infect anyone else. At least 14 days, we’re hunkered down just like so many of you! We’re hoping to return ASAP to our home in La Paz.

As far as fishing trips, many of you heard about the mutual agreement between Mexico and the U.S. to prohibit all non-essential travel. And everyone who was there visiting, has largely left to come home…or plans to stay for awhile. Alot of things are empty.

This obviously puts a big crimp in our fishing season which should have been just kicking off right now.

We have not gotten many cancelations. Most of our reservations for March, April and much of May simply postponed their trips to later dates and we are all just waiting-to-see what plays out. No one has lost their deposits or funds. Everyone is still credited if they have changed dates or postponed or, in the case of a rare cancelation.

In the meantime, I don’t know how often I’ll be posting fishing reports for a bit. I’ve only missed like…6 weeks in 24 years! But, hopefully, we can all get a handle on this and do the difficult things so we can get back to some normalcy as soon as possible.

SCATTERED YELLOWTAIL TAKE BAITS and JIGS

Ed Moreno and his wife had just one day to get on the water and always like fishing with our Captain Victor. Despite cloudy skies and erratic seas, they took a trio of nice yellowtail.

Miles Wagner has a knack for fish and took this nice yellowtail on a trolled Rapala right off the rocks at Punta Perrico near his dad’s place at Rancho Costa Resort there in Muertos .

Not much to talk about. Not many folks fishing this past week as usual because it’s off-season and windy, especially with storms hitting the U.S. there’s a direct affect on the weather in Baja. Most of the folks on the water are actually in the area windsurfing.

We did have some early week fishing when there were some gaps in the winds although conditions remained cloudy. In addition to inshore species like snapper, sierra and bonito, some jags of decent yellowtail up to about 20-25 pounds were taken outside of Bahia Muertos, up by the Punta Arenas lighthouse and, on the rare occasion of getting across the channel to Cerralvo Island on the south and east side of the island by Los Pilis.

As well, some stray spots of school-sized dorado were also hit with most fish taken running about 10-pounds. Live bait was best, when it could be found. However, winds and rough water make that prohibitive at times. Therefore frozen dead bait worked as did jigs and trolled lures. No tuna this week or wahoo although there were several hook-ups that my captains said might have been tuna or wahoo.

Kicking back in the Arizona sunshine waiting to get into the show facility. Since coronavirus can’t exist in temps oer 65 degrees we’re getting “sanitized.”

Amid all the craziness of the past week, we finished the 3-day International Sportsman’s Show in Scottdale AZ just outside of Phoenix. We had a great time and thanks to everyone who took the time to come in and visit with us and especially for those who signed up to come fish with us.

It was a strange show insofar as we didn’t know from day-to-day if it would be canceled. And, like so many other vendors, none of us knew what was going to happen to other shows that were to follow. It was a matter of waiting for the other shoe to drop. With each passing day, we heard from other friends in the outdoor industry that shows in other cities were dropping and cancelling like dominos.

Redmond, Oregon…Edmonton and Toronto up in Canada…Bakersfield CA…the Houston Stock Show…and others.

Then we found out that our next show in Salt Lake City at the ISE Show was shut down by the city.

Our last show…a big fun show…the Fred Hall Fishing and Boating Show at the Del Mar Fairgrounds in San Diego…got canceled. Then, it got re-scheduled for 6 week from now…April 30-May 3rd. Regretfully, or fishing season is already on. Jill and I need to be back in La Paz by then there’s th expense of flying all the way plus our huge booth, all the materials, hotel, etc. might make it pretty impossible. We’re gonna try our best.

Maybe Jill will have to do the show by herself so I can stay in La Paz. We’ll see.

Things are kinda crazy and the world situation is very liquid and changing daily and sometimes hourly. It might have changed by the time you’re reading this.

I will tell you that we’ve had no cancelations because of the virus. In fact, we’re almost sold out and I have folks in line asking to take any spots that get canceled. We’re getting bookings from folks whose trips to Europe, Asia or on cruises got canceled. Also, we’ve been in touch daily with our captains, staff, managers, and employees back in La Paz and there’s no virus in Baja. Apparently, the virus cannot survive in temperatures over 65 degrees!

So, all I can say it that the season looks good and we’ll keep you posted. In the meantime, thank you to everyone who made our 2020 Tailhunter Tour such great fun and for all the hospitality. Big shout out to:

The Big Picture and the Rest of the Story…

Not a bad day! Three yellowtail and this hefty yellowfin tuna on a quick run across the channel to the far side of Cerralvo Island for Rafael Guarte who took this tuna on a live mackerel.

Our local ace, and one of the best fishermen around, Roger Thompson hoists up a Cerralvo Island wahoo just off the beach.

Mostly windy and cold again, as erratic weather north of the border certainly affected conditions south of the border. However, earlier in the week, there were a few windows of opportunity when winds laid down. Or, in some cases some anglers raced to fishing spots…caught fish…then raced back in as the winds got stronger.

Basically, earlier in the week, at least for a brief while, it was better and earlier in the day it was better to fish.

That being said…

I’m surprised by some of the species that did come in when the anglers could get out.

There were some small jags of dorado which is surprising insofar as dorado are warm water species. However, also several tuna biters as well as wahoo close to shore mixing it up in the same areas as the more seasonal yellowtail.

The ticket to the tuna and yellowtail was being able to get some live mackerel, especially around the east side of Cerralvo Island all the way near Los Pilis which can be quite a run, especially if it’s windy. The mackerel weren’t always there and, in general, live bait of any kind can be difficult to obtain because of the winds.

When the bait can’t be obtained, yo-yo iron jigging for the yellowtail has been effective and they will also grab a rapala as will the wahoo that apparently have come into the area.

Additionaly species we saw this week included some big jack crevalle, bonito, barred pargo and cabrilla.

PACKING UP AND HEADED SOUTH…to ARIZONA

The Fred Hall Fishing and Boating Show in Long Beach was simply off-the-charts for us. The Long Beach Convention Center was mostly packed shoulder-to-shoulder for five straight days and especially around our Tailhunter fishing booth!

Thanks to all our friends and Tailhunter Nation for showing up and giving us such a fun good time and also for all of our new amigos and all the folks who signed up to come fishing with us in 2020. This show is the largest saltwater fishing show in the world and it’s the 76th year for this massive event and, Jill and I always have a non-stop party going on at the booth.

Thank you, especially to everyone who came by the booth to wish me happy birthday and for all the cards, gifts, food goodies and high-fives. Plus a big shout-out to all our amigos who came to party with us for a few hours at Joe Jost’s Bar in Long Beach. I’m beyond grateful for all the smiles and good times! Tailhunter Nation rocks!

DESPITE WINDS A MIXED BAG of FISH!

Jay Statman from Los Angeles had one day to fish, but using live bait and yo-yo, iron still managed a great day of action taking several nice yellowtail, a big jack crevalle, a bonito and even this nice yellowtail. Plus a number of fish were lost to the rocks including several yellowtail and dorado. Jay donated all his fish to the local families.

We only get a few of these a year. Roger Thompson was trolling on the east side of Cerralvo Island when he got bit by this rainbow runner, which is cousin to the yellowtail and just about as tasty.

Tal Nazani brought some amigos to fish with Captain Arcangel this week and first day result were surprising even with the winds forcing them to fish inshore. Still, it produced 7 yellowtail; a bunch of sierra; a cabrilla and even a nice yellowtail. They have one more day on the water later this week.

The Guluarte Family from La Paz came out for a day fishing out’ve Bahia Muertos SE of La Paz and had some great action on a surprise fat wahoo as well as some feisty yellowtail. Seals got the one on the left.

Despite winds this past week, we had a few folks get out and there were some surprising results although often, the winds and rough waters kept the fishing close to shore. In fact, it was some of the best fishing of the year, even though this is technically still off-season from November to April.

For those few who could make it across the channel to Cerralvo Island, yellowtail, cabrilla and some wahoo were hooked. The wahoo were kind of a surprise since we normally don’t see these speedsters until about May or so.

Most of the times, we had to fish closer to shore, but sometimes that’s the best fishing in the area. We usually don’t have to go far anyway. However, given the time of the year, the action was much better than expected.

Live bait is always an issue this time of the year because rough water makes it difficult to catch the bait. However, using trolled lures like Rapalas, yo-yo jigs and frozen bait, produced more yellowtail, pargo, cabrilla, jack crevalle, sierra, bonito and even the occasional yellowtail. That’s quite a mixture for the time of year with a lot of fish busting off because of the shallow waters and rocks and reefs not too far below the boats. But, still great action!

Even for our whale-watching folks that we’re taking out to the Pacific at Bahia Magdalena, it was one of the better weeks after some tough weeks of winds hindering the ability to find the whales in the shallow waters. Get in touch with us if you’d like to check this out!

Hopefully, the winds will stay down and the whale-watching usually goes until mid-March or so. However, some strong unseasonable winter storms, chill and winds are predicted for this coming week so we’ll just have to see.

THE BIG SHOW is THIS WEEK! We leave the great sportsmans show in Boise, Idaho and drive to the Long Beach Convention Center for the Fred Hall Fishing and Boating Show this week. This is the largest saltwater fishing show in the world but there’s so much to see including freshwater, hunting, travel, boating, outdoor products, gear, equipment, seminars and more! JOE JOST TAILHUNTER BEER PARTY in LONG BEACH – TUESDAY NIGHT 7:00 p.m. (Jonathan’s Birthday)

The night before the Fred Hall Show on Wednesday, we will have our annual Tailhunter Get-Together at Joe Josts Bar in Long Beach. Nothing formal. Nothing fancy. Just Tailhunter Friends and Family for a few beers at this iconic bar that has been there since 1924 and is the oldest bar west of the Mississippi and considered one of the best dive bars in the western U.S.

No liquor, but they serve their beer at 29 degrees. No fancy food. They have sausage sandwiches (the Joe Jost’s Special), pickled eggs, salami sandwiches, liverwurst sandwiches, salami sandwiches, peanuts and pretzels .

We’ll just be there a few hours because alot of us will be folks from the fishing industry and have to be at the show the next day early.
