SPRING ARRIVES and CONDITIONS IMPROVE

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay Fishing Report for Week of March 20-27, 2016

Spring and Easter week combined for an OK week of fishing.  The winds largely left us alone. The sun was out and it was a good week for all the tourists in town for for spring break although La Paz doesn’t come close to being like many other Mexican destinations.   Comparatively speaking it’s still a sleepy city.  However, Holy Week (Semana Santa) is one of the busiest times for Mexican locals to travel especially to visit families and La Paz is a great destination to get some beach time away from the bigger cities in the mainland and the beaches can be quite crowded…much moreso than usual…with campers and picnickers.

In fact, during Holy Week, camping in Mexico can b a bit hectic.   It’s not like in the U.S. where you have designated camping areas with facilities and a little ranger station house to enter and leave.  The beaches in Mexico are all public.  So wherever folks want to drop a tent and all the accessories, you can take up as much space as you want.  Literally, sometimes the more popular beaches have tents and awnings just inches away from each other.  It’s a big like mini-Woodstock!  But, still very festive like any beach and you can smell the carne asada on the barbecues for miles!  By next week, the beaches will be empty again!

Anyway for fishing, nothing spectacular, but steady OK fishing.  Nothing really to write home about but we caught fish.  They were a little hard to locate at times, but this is still very early in the season and we’re still recovering from a big cold windy winter that really tore up the area and made fishing tough.  So, here’s how it broke down this week.

LA PAZ

This is the first real week or two that we’ve had our Tailhunter La Paz Fleet out since late October.  It’s just been too windy so we’ve kept everyone fishing from Las Arenas.  However, winds are down and folks don’t want to take the 1 hour drive with us to Las Arenas so we put out the boats.

It started slowly and still hasn’t gotten a full head of steam.  Plus, some days it’s still pretty bumpy with winds.

However, inshore, we’re finding some decent-sized pargo and cabrilla along with sierra and off the drop-offs there’s some big yellowtail starting to poke up.  But, finding the spot is still hit-or-miss.  Somedays we find ‘em or one boat finds them.  Other days it’s a miss.

The surprising bite is that we’re getting some nice schools of firecracker-sized dorado.  With all the families and kids in town, this has been a hoot.  The fish are 5-10 pounds max and can be very voracious if you hit the spot.  Some days, there’s limits to be caught with the best spot being off Espirito Santo Island.

LAS ARENAS

Still the most consistent fishing.  We’re still hoping that with the winds tapering the bait will come back up.

No doubt, there’s still wahoo in the area with some decent 20-30 pound fish falling to the darker Rapalas and Yo-Zuri lures.  As well, the big red pargo liso are schooling in spawn mode off several spots near Cerralvo Island like Los Pilis and then also near Punta Perrico.   Bonito, jack crevalle and sierra have rounded out the catch along with Cabrilla.  It’s hard to judge Holy Week when there’s so many “non-fishermen” out whacking the waters.  Some days it can seem like everyone and their brother has a boat on the water and 4, 5, 6 anglers have rods and not really knowing what they’re doing.  So, there’s some traffic out there and that can spook the fish.  But, if you’re with a real captain and/ or know what you’re doing, there’s fish to be caught.

That’s our story!

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay Fishing Report from Tailhunter Sportfishing for Week of March 14-21, 2016

From Los Angeles, Butch Tropez and his family had a great day on the water while fishing with our Tailhunter Las Arenas fleet at Muertos Bay. Check out the great variety including yellowtail, big cabrilla, jack crevalle, sierra, and triggerfish. They only had one day to fish and made the most of it. The triggerfish ended up at dinner at our Tailhunter Restaurant in La Paz.

LAS ARENAS PUTS OUT VARIETY – LA PAZ NOT YET READY

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay Fishing Report for Week of March 14-21, 2016

It was a pretty nice week for fishing this past week.  Very spring-like conditions finally with temps in the 80’s and just a light breeze most days.  The week was highlighted by a decent mix of fish and also for the first time, we finally sent pangas out’ve La Paz.  We haven’t been sending out our La Paz boats since about November because of the severe winter winds we’ve been experiencing.

With better conditions, we had the boats out there with mixed results.  Some yellowtail were seen and lost and none boated.  There were some small rooster fish and cabrilla and triggerfish but that was about it.  However, this week we’ll have more boats out and hopefully better reports as we work the waters better and if the winds continue to diminish.

The better fishing was still with our Tailhunter Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay fleet.  There really was an amazing variety of species.

Along with some nice 20-30 pound yellowtail,  we had some hookups around Cerralvo Island on wahoo which continue to seem to hang out around the island and some of the other high spots.   Both species seem to have an affinity for slow trolled Rapalas, especially the dark ones. But, it’s a great welcome surprise that we’ve had wahoo around for almost a year now. No one is complaining!

Speaking of Rapalas and other crank style baits, it’s a good thing they’re working because live bait continues to be difficult to get in quantity so along with lures, dead and frozen bait is working but resulting in some nice catches of some of the biggest cabrilla I’ve seen in a long time as well as sierra, jack crevalle, amberjack, pargo, bonito and other species.

…BUT WAIT!!!

Just going to publication of this week’s fishing report today (Sunday)  and some of our boats today that fished La Paz ended up finding fish!  Schools of small dorado and pargo that were especially good for the kids. The fish were right off Isla Ballena a small outcropping off Espirito Santo Island where a bunch of floating weed was found.   Check out this photo of Captain Boli with Ben Walkerly.  Nice day!

HAPPY TRAILS AND THANK YOU!

WP_20160310_016 1

My honey and I. What a grand time you have shows us! Thank you for an amazing 3 months! Now back home to La Paz!

We’ve been on the road since before Christmas.  And now 3 months later, we’ve come to the end of the trail for this year.

We’ve criss-crossed the country through 11 different states and met and spoken with thousands of amigos at all the biggest sportsmans shows in the western U.S.  After 21-years in this business, these trips continue to re-inforce what a beautiful country we have and moreso the wonderful folks who live there.  We’ve been greeted with smiles and welcomed with hospitality no matter where we went.   Jill and I cherish this time and each and every moment.

We started with our first show of the year driving  to  icy Billings, Montana.  Then to Denver, Colorado.  Then because of heavy snow, we had a 500-mile “detour” through New Mexico and Arizona to get to Sacramento, CA.  After that, we drove to the Seattle area at the Puyallup Fairgrounds followed by the huge show in Portland, Oregon.

Then, it was onto Yakima, Washington.  Then, Jill and I split up.

I did the Fred Hall show in Long Beach CA while Jilly hit the road to cover us in Boise, Idaho.

We got together again to do the ISE show in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Then, we finished out by splitting up again!  Jill held the booth at the Del Mar Fairgrounds in San Diego.  I spent the week in Salt Lake City.

And so we close this chapter with a huge MUCHAS GRACIAS to each and every one of you who took the time to say hi and chat with us in our booths.  And we look forward to seeing so many of you in La Paz this year.

Let’s get onto the fishing season!  Vamos a pescar!

That’s our story!

WHAT?   SNOW AND HAIL IN LA PAZ?

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay Fishing Report for Week of March 7-13, 2016

Not many fishermen in town this week, but it’s kind of the little lull before the Spring Break and Easter Fishermen come in and the season kicks into gear.  The big story this week was the weather…again!  But not for the usual windy days we’ve had this winter.  The big weather story was the fact that it SNOWED!

That’s right.  Historically, no one can ever remember that happening!  We’ve been having 85 degree weather for several weeks but then earlier this week, some cells came down from the north.  There was rain.  Then some areas like Los Planes near Muertos Bay got pelted with hail…I think I’ve only seen that happen once in 20 years!  Some areas of La Paz also got hit.

But up in the higher areas like San Antonio, they actually got a good dusting of snow!  An incredible first!  It even stuck for awhile.  Not enough to go sledding or anything like that or even make margaritas out’ve it, but more like someone took powdered sugar to everything!

Just another El Nino bit of craziness.

But, back to normalcy…there were some fish things happening too!  Some fat yellowtail were taken at the south end of Cerralvo in Rapalas.  Fish ran up to about 25 pounds.  A few smaller amberjack were also taken and one fish estimated at close to 80 pounds was picked up and lost at gaff.  Supposedly, the northern end of Cerralvo is holding some really big amberjack according to the commercial guys.

Inshore…yup..inshore, there are still wahoo up to about 40 pounds that are again falling to the dark Rapalas/ Yo-zuri type lures.  Gotta be honest…there’s a real lack of live or dead bait right now.  Hope that changes.  But we’re able to scrape up some sardines and some mackerel here and there or use frozen stuff.

Smaller lures and cut bait are working on cabrilla and sierra and some big pargo up to about 20 pounds are in the spawn mode in the usual rocky areas, but especially off Punta Perrico and los Pilis near the east side of the island.

PARGO LEAD OFF A GOOD WEEK

OF VARIETY

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay Fishing Report for Week of Feb 29-March 6, 2016

For the first time in months, I can say that wind was not a factor in the fishing this past week.  It might have been the nicest week all season.  If you’ve been reading our fishing reports, you know that winds have plagued us for months as we’ve had probably the windiest winter in memory.  You would also know that when the winds don’t blow, there’s some pretty good fishing to be had.

And that’s exactly what happened.  One seems to follow the other.

But, again, there were some surprises.  When the wind has lain down in the past, we got crazy warm water species of fish like marlin, sailfish, dorado and even tuna.

This time, we got more traditional winter fish.  In fact, we got some of the most sought-after cooler water species in the list for our areas as the pargo liso (giant mullet snapper) rocked our anglers and bent rods.  Historically, during this time of the year, the pargo come up in certain shallow areas and school up while they spawn.  It’s quite a sight to often see an undulating mass of copper-colored water that’s really schools of 10-40 pound pargo much like a giant koi pond on steroids. Even more incredible when the big school starts to feed and blows up on the surface of the water.  Ever seen those crazy TV movies of piranha ?  Well, you get the idea except these are ham-sized slugger fish tearing up the surface!

Well, the pargo were that tough 5-20 pound size that confounds so many anglers because they bust off in the rocks.  Believe me these are tough fish and generally over the years I tell people that if you hook 10, you’ll maybe get one to the boat!  That’s how tough they are.  I’ve never seen a fish piss off and frustrate  like pargo!

In additon to the pargo, however, we also got other fish we normally see during these months  This included cabrilla (sea bass), jack crevalle, amberjack, sierra, bonito and even a few dorado and wahoo…the latter two adding to the mystery because wahoo and dorado are warm water species.  The cool thing is that these fish were not in deep water or far off-shore.  On the contrary, like the pargo, those were shallow water catches!

The dorado weren’t big.  Maybe 10 pounders which are a good eating-size.  The wahoo were really nice trophies in the 10-40 pound class.

Looking at the forecast, winds might be coming up again this week.  Surely stronger than this past week.  There is even a chance of some rain early this week.  We’ll see!

THANK YOU LONG BEACH and BOISE!  HERE WE COME SCOTTSDALE, AZ!

WP_20160306_011

Vinnie Sanchez and his great family came to see us in Long Beach!

Whew!  What a week.  Jill and I just had a spectacular week even though we had to split up.  She was up at the Idaho Sportsman’s Show in Boise.  I was at the Long Beach Convention Center for the 70th Annual Fred Hall Fishing and Boating Show.   We’re a little goofy  from the long week apart and  from all the great folkw we talked to but are sure grateful to all the amigos who came by to chat with us about fishing in La Paz or even just to say hi!  Thanks for all the smiles!  We’re looking forward to seeing many of you this year in La Paz!

Now, after almost 3 months on the road, our Tailhunter Tour takes us to Scottsdale, Arizona for the International Sportsmans Expo at the Westworld Expo. The show has grown so large its now moved and will be combined with the Arizona Boat show and will run March 10-13!   It’s gonna be great.   Here’s a link to all the details:  http:/http://www.sportsexpos.com/attend/scottsdale/

Come see us and let’s go fishing in La Paz.

GOT GREAT WEATHER…THERE’S FISH…BUT NOT SO MANY ANGLERS!

La Paz  – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay Fishing Report for Week of Feb. 21-28, 2016

After a brutal winter of winds, we’ve had two of the calmest weeks of the year these past two weeks.  There was a day or two of winds, but nothing like we’ve been experiencing.  The only issue is that being off-season, there’s not really any fishermen around.  In about a month, we’ll be loaded, but right now, if you want the beach or water to yourself, it’s like a beach in a Corona Beer commercial.  Find your beach!

Of course, that’s not to say that the winds are over for good, but it’s been really nice lately with daytime temps in the 80’s.   Perfect beach weather and that’s what we have in town right now.  Alot of snow-birds enjoying the beaches and sunshine and the only ice they’re seeing is inside the rim of a margarita glass.

As for fishing, as I said, not many anglers this past week.  Earlier in the week, we did find some spots of yellowtail that went about 25 pounds along with the usual winter species of cabrilla, pargo and jack crevalle that were alot of fun.  Also, we had a few wahoo around, but each hookup came off, but the fish were definitely there!   Later in the week, we didn’t find any of the trophy species, but bonito and sierra filled in.  Not big, but fun. Actually, more typical of what we catch this time of the year.  The fish are in various places from the island to the bay.

The coming week looks good again as far as the wind and weather is concerned.  We’ve got anglers this coming week so hopefully, a more complete report coming by the weekend!

As far as Jill and I, we’ll finished our shows in the beautiful Pacific Northwest and had a great time seeing so many of our amigos!

But now, it’s time to discard the heavy coats and snow clothes and rain jackets.   I will be at the Long Beach Convention Center for the massive Fred Hall Fishing and Boating show that goes from Wednesday to Sunday.  This is the big boy giant show.  Come see us. We’ll be in our usual spot right smack in the middle of the action.

Jill will split off and head to the Boise Fairgounds in Boise, Idaho for one of our favorite shows in one of our favorite spots.  She’ll be at that show Thursday to Sunday.  Go say hi to her if you’re in the area and ask her about fishing in La Paz this year!

COMING YOUR WAY…and SPLITTING UP!

Jilly n JR Long Beach booth

The Tailhunter Road Show continues on into it’s 3rd month!  Just wrapped up in Yakima, Washington at the Central Washington Sportsman’s Show.

We’re now on our way to two different places at the same time!

Jill will be in Boise, Idaho at the Boise Sportsman’s Show from Thursday to Sunday to visit with all our good friends and clients in that pretty city.

Jonathan will be in the booth holding the fort at the Long Beach Convention Center in Long Beach CA for the Fred Hall Fishing and Boating Show that goes Wednesday to Sunday.

Come by and say hi and check out our 2016 24-page brochure, DVD and new design Tailhunter t-shirts and come set up your La Paz fishing trip for this year too!   See you soon!

IT’S FEBRUARY…OR IS IT MAY?

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay Fishing Report for Week of Feb. 14-21, 2016

For one of the first times all winter, the winds kicked down and gave us a break with minimal interference for once.  Being off-season, there still weren’t many fishermen, but for those of our clients who got on the water, they were treated to some unusually great species of fishing.  Normally, our winter fishing consists of inshore species for pargo, cabrilla, jacks, bonito, sierra and other rock and reef fish.  Not bad fishing and some of these species can grow to hog-size, but we’re generally not seeing the much sought-after glamour species that get all the headlines.

Well, this past week, we turned in quite a variety.  And it wasn’t like we had to chase them far offshore.  In generally the same inshore waters where the rock fish hang out…generally shallow waters inside Muertos Bay…just outside or over the rocks near Cerralvo Island…we got the pargo, cabrilla, snapper and sierra.

But, crazily enough, we also hit nice wahoo in the 20-40 pound class (and got bit off some) .  Most of these fish were taken with trolled dark Rapalas or frozen mackerel.  There’s not much in the way of live bait right now.  We also got some toad yellowtail in the 25-30 pound category (and lost more).  Several marlin were lost in the shallows.  But, even more surprisingly, we got a few football yellowfin tuna!  Nothing big, but fun 10-15 pounders were just off the beach.

We don’t usually see these species (except the yellowtail) until mid-to-late-springtime.  So, these were really nice bonus fish. The other thing it that most of our folks who fish this time of year aren’t hardcore.  Many are first-timers (never fished before or never visited before) or are one-timers (in town on vacation and just toss in a day of fishing).  You can imagine the grins when someone from say…Wyoming or Canada or Europe used to catching trout suddenly latches onto a speedy 30 pound wahoo racing up to 70 mph or gets slammed by a fat yellowtail intent on jamming back into the rocks…fish that would give even veteran fish a run for their money!

As long as the winds stay down, anything is possible!

 DIVIDING OUR FORCES

WP_20160131_010 2

Just finishing up a great 3-day run at the Central Washington Sportsmans Show in Yakima Washington.  Thanks to all our Tailhunter amigos for their great hospitality!

So, now Jill and I split it up!

We’ve been on the road now for about 9 weeks of shows.  However…Due to show scheduling, we now head south…sort of.  Next week, Jill and I travel to the big boy, Fred Hall show at the Long Beach Convention Center to set me up for that event  (March 2-6), then she flies back north to the Boise Fairgrounds in Boise, Idaho for Idaho Sportsmans Show (March 3-6).

Hope to see you in either Long Beach or Boise!

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay Fishing Report from Tailhunter Sportfishing for Week of Feb. 8-14, 2016

trio yellowtail wahoo 2-16 tags

Not a bad day of fishing, but more incredible because these wahoo and yellowtail caught by Ken Gragg and Carl Lange from Bakersfield CA were caught in FEBRUARY! Captain Pancho on the left helps out!

marlin carl 2 2-16jpeg tags

Carl Lange has been coming for years during the warmer months and never caught a marlin. In his first two days this week when he should have been catching little rock fish…he hooks and releases two striped marlin just outside of the rocks at Punta Perrico. Both marlin released!

dorado Gary Wagner tags 2-16

Another hard-to-believe fish ,but take a look at Gary Wagner standing outside his place in Bahia de los Muertos with a nice bull dorado. Last year, this would have been one of the largest bull dorado of the year when there were so many dinks! But, again…this is WINTER and dorado time is summer and fall! Gary is the owner of the famous Giggling Marlin Bar in Cabo San Lucas.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

At one point this week, it was impossible to miss on the yellowtail in the bay at Muertos this week. There were THAT many of them ripping it up. Ken Gragg caught this big yellow and you’ll notice something that looks like a tongue sticking out of it’s mouth! Go to the next photo…

image-2

That yellowtail was so hungry it swallowed the entire Rapala X-Rap 30 WHOLE! The only thing sticking out is the tongue of the crankbait which is about 9 inches long!

Wahoo and yellowtail teeth marks on the Rapala after a hard day of fishing!

Some fine-eating cabrilla meat for Ken and Carl! Big trophy fish!

golden grouper ken 2-16 tags

We’ve been getting some crazy unusual species the last several weeks and perhaps not many as unusual as this Golden Baja Grouper that Ken Gragg caught. I’ve only seen a handful of these caught in my 20 years here in La Paz. In the past month, there’s been THREE of them caught!

Another nice reef fish…a big cabrilla for Tony Vitolo from Wyoming!

SPLIT PERSONALITY WEEK (WITH WIND…WITHOUT WIND!)

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Feb. 8-14, 2016

What a week!  As I’ve been harping for about 3 months, it’s winter.   I get it.

And the fishing seems completely dependent on how the winds are blowing and no-doubt, this has been the windiest winter that anyone can remember.  Most days of the week it’s far to windy to even be out on the water.  But, whenever the winds drop down a bit and give us a break, the fish bite.  And when they’ve bit, it’s been something to see.

Well, this was a total schizophrenic fishing week.  Early in the week and late in the week it was crazy blowing.  Forget it.  Winds were kicking at around 20 knots with gusts up to 30 knots.  Even when it dropped off a bit as the week started, it was pretty bouncy out there and a rugged day of fishing.

However, it dropped off enough for us to get some anglers out there and sure enough, the fish bit!

I’m not even sure where to start.  We didn’t even have to get out very far!

As one of our guys put it inside Muertos Bay the fish were literally foaming.  It was like they were voracious at times.

There were 10-30 pound yellowtail boiling on the surface and moving in the shallows.  There were wahoo chasing mackerel in the bay.  Among the rocks and submerged reefs huge pargo and cabrilla were feeding.  There were some nice dorado free swimming through the bait schools and just outside…MARLIN!!!  And I’m talking just a few hundred yards off the beach!  Most of these fish shouldn’t even be here.  It’s WINTER!

But, how good is this?  It wasn’t wide open, but it was pretty darned good all things considered.   For a few days the striped marlin were on the chew…wahoo and yellowtail bit the dark rapalas…the pargo, cabrilla and snapper bit the jigs and dead bait.  Sierra hit small trolled baits and dorado were hitting just about everything else!

Then, the week ended.  The winds came back up.  The the bite disappeared!   However, as you’re reading this, the forecast for the coming week shows some good days of minimal wind and we’re hoping the bite comes back up!

THANK YOU PORTLAND!  HERE WE COME YAKIMA!

WP_20160214_002-1

Carl Lange marlin 2-16 tags

Carl Lange has visited us many times over the years, but never got his marlin…until this week! Braving winds and waves and even getting a bit wet, he got this guy on a frozen mackerel. A quick photo with Captain Pancho and the fish was released. We don’t usually see Marlin until May or so! Great smile, Carl!

Chilecano tags 2-16

An unusual and large catch for amigo, Ken Gragg. A chilecano that looks like a giant sardine! These fish usually school up and don’t usually hit a hook and line. Punta Perrico is just behind Ken.

Nicely done…as always! Donna Thompson fishing with Captain Hugo rarely misses. She’s got a nice pair of sierra that make great ceviche! Interestingly, both warm and cold water species are in our area right now even tho’ it’s WINTER!

We are smack in the middle of the migration of the gray whales and our whalewatching trips to Magdalena Bay. Ask us about our daily trips! This is a great family opportunity to get up close with these gentle giants!

TERRIBLE WINDY WEEK BUT THIS WEEK SHAPING UP BETTER

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay Fishing Report for Week of Feb. 1-8, 2016

Tough week to fish.  It’s been like this all winter.  Just too windy to get out with double digit winds every single day this week.  All from the north.  Fortunately, being winter, there’s not many folks asking to go fish or even many fishermen around.   We have one day early in the week where the forecast said it would be single digit winds and had some clients who only had one day to fish.  We tried to send them out, but the winds were so strong, they never even got off the beach and we had to drive them back to La Paz from Muertos Bay.

The formula is basically this.  If there’s storms north of Mexico, there will probably be windy days south of the border.  Simple!  With El Nino, there have been a big procession of storms in the U.S. which is much needed.  I get that.  This is all part of a natural cycle that’s been going on for eons so there’s not much to be done about it.  It is what it is.

This coming week looks much more promising according to the forecasts so hopefully, the winds will lay down.  When the winds lay down, the last few weeks we’ve gotten yellowtail, wahoo, sailfish, marlin, pargo, cabrilla and sierra.

This wahoo might not look as large as it really is, but make no mistake this is a nice fish because Paddy Christopuli is 6’6″ tall! The fish was caught off the south end of Cerralvo Island.

JIlly is ready to go! Had a great show in Washington and now we’re taking the Tailhunter booth to Portland Oregon for the Northwest Sportsmans Show.

THERE’S FISH TO BE CAUGHT!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of January. 24-31, 2016

True to form as has been since late October, the formula for fishing has been pretty simple.  Find a window of opportunity when the wind isn’t blowing and there’s a good chance that you’re going to find fish.   In fact, chances are the fishing will be pretty darned good…and likely unusual.

We had some winds this week.  But early in the week and late in the week the weather gods smiled and the wind speeds dropped to single digits and the waters went flat.  There’s not that many folks out because this is off-season, but for those that were out fishing, the “catching” was alot better than the typical winter fare of inshore species like pargo, cabrilla and jack crevalle.

There’s been quite a mix of fish because in addition to the “cold water” inshore fish like the jacks, sea bass and snapper, there’s also sierra, but more importantly, blue water species like sailfish, yellowtail and wahoo.  That’s pretty incredible because the sailfish and wahoo are normally warmer water fish.  More surprising because the fish are not far off or in deep water.  Areas such as Punta Perrico…right off the rocks just outside of Bahia de los Muertos and the south end of Cerralvo Island are  both holding some big fish.  The yellowtail are running 20-30 pounds.  The wahoo are also in that range of 30 -pound class fish.

This week Carnival starts for 6 days starting Thursday!  La Paz is going to be in full party-mode!

THANK YOU WASHINGTON – NOW ONTO PORTLAND!

WP_20160130_003

Our friends, the Conklins, who have fished with us many many times in La Paz, were just some of so many amigos who visited us in Washington.

A big Tailhunter “GRACIAS” to everyone who came to visit us at our booth in Puyallup, Washington at the Washington State Fairgrounds near Seattle!  We had an incredible 5-day run and booked lots of amigos to come fish with us this year in La Paz.   We’ll see all of you soon!  Thanks to everyone for the fantastic Washington hospitality!

We now move onto show #5!  We’ve visited Billings, Montana…Denver, Colorado…Sacramento, California and now Puyallup, Washington.   It’s been a great “road tour!”

So, here we come, Portland, Oregon!  One of our favorite cities and we’ll be at the Portland Expo Center on the Columbia River from Feb. 10-14th for the Northwest Sportsmans’ Show.  Hope to see you there!

LA PAZ CARNIVALE!

CARNAVAL LA PAZ 2014

If you’re on town this week, the 2016 La Paz Carnival starts up and it’s one of the biggest parties of the year and one of the largest Carnivals in Mexico!  Similar to Mardi Gras, it kicks off Thursday and goes to the following Tuesday with all kinds of parades that pass right by our Tailhunter Restaurant plus all kinds of food, music, rides and other festivities!

That’s our story!

sierra wagner 1-16 tags

Thanks to Gary Wagner, owner of the famous Giggling Marlin Restaurant in Cabo, who provided me with the pictures this week. Gary has a great place there in Bahia de los Muertos so he was on top of whatever fishing was happening. Here’s Gary with a big sierra. Makes great ceviche!

Pompano wagner 1-16

Another great eating fish is the pompano! One of the best sashime meats when sliced thin, but cooks up great too! Gary’s catch is another of the unusual fish we’ve been catching the last few weeks. Normally, we don’t see pompano until the spring!

Marlin release 1-16 tags

One of the marlin hook-ups that got away. Great shot!

Amy kasper 1 whales

Whale watching season is here and the gray whales are filling up out there at Lopez Mateos in Bahia Magdalena. Amy Kasper gives us a big smile as two of the gentle animals come to check out the panga. The whales are gonna be around until about early March and we’re booking trips right now to spend some time out there at Bahia Magdalena. It’s a great once-in-a-lifetime adventure in the calm waters of the bay!

WP_20160121_012

Thanks, Sacramento! We had a great show at the ISE which took place at the California State Fairgrounds from Thursday to Sunday. Thanks to everyone who visited me, Jill and Catlyn at the booth and signed up also to come visit us in La Paz. We’re on our way now to the Seattle area at the Puyallup State Fairgrounds. We’ll be there from Wednesday to Sunday! Come visit us and check out all the great fishing, hunting and outdoor activities and displays!

WINDS BACK LAST WEEK AND FISH TAKE THE WEEK OFF TOO

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay Fishing Report for Week of Jan. 17-24, 2016

Not really much to tell you this report.  Last week for about the first time in 2 months the winds laid down over a series of days.  The bait came up.  The fish charged in. We had wahoo, yellowtail, sailfish and marlin ripping it off just a few hundred yards off the beach.

Then, Sunday came up and the winds came back and for the most part, fishing got stinky again.  On the upside, not many fishermen this time of year, anyway.   Some sierra, cabrilla, bonito and jack crevalle caught.  More typical of this time of year.  Two marlin hooked and lost.  It’s crazy to even see marlin in the middle of winter!

This week is looking better.  Tuesday and Wednesday will probably be too rough to fish, but the other days, the winds are moderate.  Not great…but fishable.  Air temps are really nice.  High 70’s to high 50’s.  Sun is out.  Nice time to be in town!

THANK YOU SACRAMENTO – WASHINGTON HERE WE COME!

WP_20160123_002-1

Bennett and Alicia Clegg came by the booth to set up their trip with their famlies to come fish in La Paz with us again and Alicia found out she’s our 2016 cover gal with the big rooster she caught last year! Congratulations!

WP_20160122_004

Here’s trouble! Talk about Talhunter Tribal Members…a big toast to these amigos who have all been to La Paz many times with us and all set up new trips for 2016. You guys are the best!

WP_20160123_001-1

You probably won’t find funner or more enthusiastic amigos than Darryl and Kathy Pietak who are coming back to see us in La Paz this summer! Darryle always sports one of our Tailhunter shirts!

BFF’s! Catlyn joins Jilly and our bestest amiga, Carrie Wilson from the Department of Fish and Wildlife. These two / three can be a fun handful in our booth.

“We just stopped for a quick tequila…” That’s how it starts…in our booth at Sacramento! They visit us every year! Cheers, boys!

Whew!  What a week and boy did we have fun at the International Sportsmans Expo at the California State Fairgrounds this past week!  The show as off-the-hook, super!  Jill and I were hoarse at the end of each of the 4 days as our aisles were packed and our booth was just a buzz of amigos and clients!  It was surely a party and thank you to all of you who came to visit and say hi.  Great to see so many of you  and thanks for the hospitality, especially all of you Tailhunter Tribal members who added to our caloric intake with goodies like candies, cookies, teriyaki chicken, sushi, Chinese pork buns, bottles of wine and tequila…you all rock!

Also thanks to all of you who booked trips to come see us in 2016.  We’re looking forward to your visit and I’ll start growing the fish bigger for you!

We’re on our way now north.  We’re actually in the van and Jill is driving so I can type! We’ve got 1 1/2 days to get to the Seattle area to set up for the Northwest Sportsmans Show at the Puyallup, Washington Fairgrounds.  This is another massive show and will go FIVE days from Wednesday to Sunday.  Come by and say hi….check out our new brochure and Tailhunter T-shirts.  Let’s talk about fishing in La Paz with Tailhunter this year!  Hope to see you!

CELEBRITY ALERT at our TAILHUNTER RESTAURANT

Yes, it’s him!  Mr. Charlie Sheen (“Two And A Half Men”)  stopped by last week and had Benny cook him up some of our famous teriyaki tacos.  Charlie told Benny, they were the “best ever!”  Muchas gracias!   Never know who will walk in!
