THE BIG PICTURE and the REST of the STORY….

Carl Lange took down our first wahoo of the season just outside of Bahia Muertos! Crazy March catch!

 

OH man…this is a hog yellowtail! Roger Thompson with Captain Hugo knocked this guy out at the north end of Cerralvo Island slow trolling sardines in about 12′ of water! They got 5, but lost others they couldn’t stop.

 

Our Bakersfield amigo, Ken Gragg, loves to fish this time of year, even in the crazy weather and it paid off with a big-headed yellowtail later in the week.

The cabrilla queen herself, Donna Thompson from La Ventana has stuck so many of these big cabrilla over the years and she did it again at Cerralvo Island in shallow water.

You can tell it’s a bit cold and nippy as well as choppy, but Carl Lange probably doesn’t feel a thing except big smiles over another nice yellowtail.

We’ve got the whalesharks in the by of La Paz again. Had about a dozen this week and later in the week when winds calmed down, we were able to put some folks in the water to go swimming with them in the shallows.

It’s an incredible experience snorkeling with our La Paz whalesharks in the bay. The “babies” are only about 15 feet long or so.

The week started pretty blustery with white caps even in the normally calm La Paz Bay.  Actually, for this time of the year, that’s not unusual.  Fortunately, we didn’t have anyone out fishing, but we probably could not have gone out anyway.

 

However, as the week went on, winds diminished somewhat, at least enough to get out although there was still some chop and it was good to have a jacket or sweatshirt on.

 

Fishing out’ve Bahia de los Muertos, we hit quite a mix of fish, especially for so early in the year with warm water species mixing with the normal cold water species.  Big cabrilla, jack crevalle and both white bonito and skipjack kept the rods bent as well as smaller snapper and pargo.  However, we also got some legit yellowtail over structure and topped it with some flurries of dorado and even wahoo.

 

Live bait is still hard to come by with all the rough water, but we’re dragging lures and using dead bait pretty effectively and the fishing is not too far off the beach.

 

It was also calm enough to get out to swim with the whalesharks in La Paz Bay.  We had as many as a dozen in the shallow waters, but on the choppy days it’s hard to see them let alone swim with them.

 

Photo one : Carl Lange was fishing off the rocks just outside of Bahia Muertos near La Paz and was surprised when this wahoo hit his Rapala trolling in the shallows for cabrilla.  Carl is from Bakersfield.

 

Photo two:  Big-headed yellowtail on the gaff with Ken Gragg from Bakersfield who was just off Punta Perrico near La Paz and using dead bait.  He also got a big cabrilla.

HERE COMES THE BIG ONE!

Just wrapping it up in Boise, Idaho from the Idaho Sportsman’s Show and just a quick shout-out to all the Idaho amigos who came to visit us and put out a red-carpet welcome!  Man…what a show! Best Idaho show we’ve had in more than a decade!  Thank you all and we’ll see you in La Paz!

It’s the grand-daddy…Fred Hall Fishing Show at the Long Beach Convention Center.  This is the oldest and largest fishing show in the entire U.S. and runs from Wednesday to Sunday (March. 6-10).  Come see us.  This is the one you do not want to miss.  We’ll be in our booth every single day and it is always a party at the Tailhunter Booth!

TUESDAY Mar. 5th JONATHAN’s BD BEER PARTY in LONG BEACH

If you’re gonna be in Long Beach Tuesday night, after we set up our booth at the Long Beach Convention Center, we traditionally head over to Joe Jost’s Bar and have some beers under the pretense of it being my birthday.  It’s my 62nd and we hope to be there about 6:30.  Totally informal.

Joe Josts has been there since 1924!  All the serve is beer…and sausage sandwiches…and pickled eggs…and liverwurst sandwiches…and egg salad sandwiches and pretzels and peanuts!  It’s like stepping back in time as I mark my time! It’s cheap and it’s fun! Just my style!

TOUGH WEEK BUT SOME FISH FOUND

THE BIG PICTURE and the REST of the STORY…

He always rocks! Roger Thompson busted up this big boy slug yellowtail up at the north end of Cerralvo Island slow trolling sardines in shallow water and lost another one that he couldn’t stop jigging iron.

Armando took out Dick and Lorna Gasser from Spanish Fork, UT, who have been with us many times and always do great. But with winds and lack of bait, it was a little tougher this week with basically only some bonito to show.

For the first time this week, we sent out some of the boats from our La Paz Fleet. Despite fears about winds and waves, they found bait and got into some decent dorado which we don’t usually see until later in the warmer months.

Debbie Walden from Lakewood CA was out visiting her sister Donna Thompson (right) this past week near La Paz. Donna has lots of experience on big Baja fish and they were out at the north end of Cerralvo Island when they hit breaking yellowtail. This guy hit and both ladies had fun tag-teaming to get it to the boat.

It looks a little chilly! Is this Baja? Just off the rocks at Punta Perico, Dick Gasser got this little cabrilla and released it.

Yea…it was that chilly! Jorge…Dick…Lorna suited up to get out on the water!

 

It was a strange week.  The two variables of weather and bait played a big part in success on the water as it usually does, but perhaps even moreso in the winter months when winds can be strong and bait can be scarce.

 

It was no different this week.  At times the winds blew strong and consistently.  Gusts up to 30 knots at times pushed a lot of white water around which made it hard to find, let alone get live bait.  But that’s how it is during these months and a big reason not many folks are out fishing even when the sun is out most times and the daytime air temps are running in the 70’s which is great for the snowbirds in town.

 

It was “chilly” by Baja standards and there were even little bouts of rain here and there.

 

Most of the fishing was picky at best with a mixed bag of small cabrilla, jacks, some snapper and bonito, although many of them were the white bonito which are actually pretty good eating and a lot of fun. But, not fun if you’re in a bouncing boat and getting sprayed with white-water. A lot of the fishing relied on dragging Rapalas or lures trying to get a hook up when we couldn’t get the bait.

 

However, what a difference on the days when we did find bait…even when the weather was less than desireable.   We had some exploratory boats we sent out’ve La Paz with some of our regulars who took a chance on the weather and hooked into some surprisingly decent dorado which aren’t very common this time of year.  Each of our pangas got a handful and lost others.

 

Additionally, again using bait, but slow trolling in shallow water, in a chum line of sardines, fat yellowtail popped up and ripped some rods too with some fish that couldn’t be stopped, especially with the rocks so close rising up from the bottom.

…AND THE WHALES!

Whalewatching season is in full swing and we’re running daily and overnight trips out to see them but this past week, it was a bit rough and bumpy and made it hard to get onto the whales, even out in Magdalena Bay which is normally flat and calm.

The Big Picture and the Rest of the Story…

We had folks fishing Bahia Magdalena this week. Guy Nazareno is holding a nice snook. But actually, it was caught by his 5-year old daughter, Natalie, but she couldn’t hold up the big fish although she dialed it in all by herself.

Big smiles for our very own, Jorge Romero, who took this tasty corvina in the shallow waters of Bahia Magdalena this week.

Cute little baby roosterfish inside the bay! The fish was released to grow into one of the giants we get later in the season.

The winds came back this week and it was on the chilly side.  However, fortunately the two best days when the winds laid down were the two days we had folks out on the water!

Bottom line, however is that the opportunities, overall for the week were small and when we did get fish, it was mostly bonito.  No sugarcoating it.

On the two days when the winds gave us a break…

The first day, as is often the situation during these windy months, bait was hard to find so we had to drag lures.  Still, some good action with lots of bonito to bend rods.

The 2nd day was much better and live bait was available and our folks got more bonito, but also small roosterfish and even dorado and tuna which are pretty unusual this time of the year during the colder windier months.

What many folks seem to forget is that when there’s storm in the U.S., the “winter conditions” don’t stop at the border.  It has been an incredible stormy week in the western U.S. and along the Pacific Coast with wind, rain and snow.

Consequently, it was also windy and relatively cold in La Paz as well.  The coming week doesn’t look that much better, but that’s to be expected this time of year.

In Other News…

Our Whale-Watching Season is in full swing.  Lots of whales there in Bahia Magdalena and we’re running daily and over-night tours there for as long as the whales stick around.  Hopefully until mid-late March!

 

Jilly and I just wrapped up the best Salt Lake City show ever at the Great Western Hunt and Conservation Expo at the Salt Palace in Salt Lake City.  It was probably the largest hunt show we have ever participated in with outfitters from all over the world including S. America…Asia…Canada…New Zealand…Alaska…the U.S…./even Russia!  Just walking the aisles was a lesson in geography!

BEST BITE EARLY IN WEEK

Spoiler alert!  This week’s video report was NOT filmed in La Paz!  But, it makes it easier to sell sunshine and warm sandy beaches in places like this!   Thank you, Oregon!

 

The Big Picture and the Rest of the Story…

The week started well with lower winds and calmer seas for once.  Not many anglers in town, but we had a few and surprisingly got into some water-water action with a handful of dorado popping up.  Nothing big, but it’s surprising to get dorado in the winter and for first-timers hooking an acrobatic 10 or 15 pound dorado is pretty exciting.

In addition, jack crevalle, good numbers of fat bonito plus some cabrilla over the rocks provided fun action, especially on light tackle.  As the week went on, winds came up and it got colder and rougher..enough to bend the palm trees and put little white-caps on the bay.

By the time you’re reading this, we’ve left snowy cold Portland Oregon and headed to….snowy cold Salt Lake City, Utah!  But, first a shout-out to Portland and all of our amigos in the Pacific NW for all the hospitality and ohana after 3 week in one of our favorite places.

COLD WINDY WEEK IMPROVES

Not many anglers around these days which is off-season.  Early in the week we it was pretty chilly, cold and windy.  Conditions got a little better as the week went on.  Bait is an issue because of the rough water so our captains relied on slow trolling dead bait and lures inshore where it was more protected.  Catches included bonito, jack crevalle, snapper, cabrilla and barred pargo.

WHALE WATCHING SEASON IN FULL SWING

Although it’s not prime time fishing right now, from late January until March, it’s our whale-watching season and it’s in full swing and we’re running daily and overnight trips to Bahia Magdalena every week to spend time with the whales.  Great family trip and opportunity to spend some incredible close-up action and interaction with these fantastic animals in the calm bay waters.  E-mail us if you’d like more information at Jonathan@tailhunter.com

Coming to Portland This Week!

Our Tailhunter 2019 tour swings us into the big Pacific Northwest Sportsmans Show this week at the Portland Expo Center.  This is probably the largest show in the Pacific Northwest and one of the largest in the Western U.S.  with almost 1000 vendors from all over the world including Mexico, the U.S., S. Africa, Alaska, New Zealand, S. America and more!  If you’re into fishing, hunting, camping, boating and just the outdoors in general, there’s something for the whole family whether you’re looking for some great gear;  booking a potential trip; or want to test stuff or talk and learn from experts.

Something a little different this week.  Sorry the video is a little ragged this week.  We were in our booth at the Puyallup Fairgrounds and crowds were already starting to come down the aisle and watching some goofy guy (me!) talking out loud to his laptop!  So I didn’t have much time!

Also, no real fishing to report so I answered some letters in the video about fishing in La Paz!

The Big Picture and the Rest of the Story…

Honestly not much to say about fishing this week.  I guess I could make something up, but that’s now how we roll.

This is winter and off-season and not many folks out fishing from November to April.  Mostly, it’s because of the winds and waves that can be very erratic.   So, that’s what happened this week.

We did have a few folks set to fish early in the week, but it was pretty rough.  So, as much as they wanted to go, I advised they just cancel. Stay at the hotel. Hang out at the pool.  Go to town of lunch.  Sleep in.  Take a siesta.

Fishing is supposed to be fun, right?  Not an excercise in staying dry and trying to stay in the boat.  Many of the folks we have this time of year aren’t hard-core anglers.  For some it’s their first time really fishing in the ocean so I don’t want them to have a bad time.  As much as we love the business, especially this time of year, it was better to just advise folks not to come out.

Not much bait around but plugs and lures are working.

However, when the wind isn’t blowing, there’s some dorado out there.  Pargo and cabrilla and snapper are still around the reefs and rocks.

Sierra, bonito and jack crevalle near the drop offs.  This coming week, the winds die down about mid-week so hopefully, I”ll have a better report for you!

TAILHUNTER ROAD TOUR 2019

Thanks, Washington!  Now on our way to Portland!

Well, we just finished our 3rd show of the season.  We’re wrapping things up here in the Seattle area and packing to head to our next show at the Portland Expo Center in Portland, Oregon Sept. 6-10.  We’ve had some fantastic shows so far!   We’ve been in Denver, Sacramento and then this past week in Seattle.

Short Attention Span Week at a Glance

Weather – Variable.  Some days were pretty windy and rough.  Others were nice.  Some localized showers.  Highs were in the high 70’s.  Nighttime lows low 60’s.

Water – You’d think it should be cooler than normal, but the fact that dorado are around indicates some warm waters.

Fishing – If the weather was good, it was fishable and some surprising catches with a nice mixed bag.  If weather was not so good, then it made it tough.  Live bait is not easy to get because of the erratic water.  However, lures and dead bait seem to work fine.  Got dorado, skipjack, bonito, jack crevalle, small yellowtail and sierra this week.  Everyone got fish!

Forecast – Some high winds early in the week.  Probably won’t be fishing.  Then, gets better.  Highs in the low 70’s and lows to the high 50’s.  Partially cloudy skies.

Chuck Chandler from Alaska and staying at Rancho Costa there in Muertos Bay near La Paz found some great sunshine and this big-headed bull dorado (mahi mahi) that no doubtedly hit the grill.

Hope you’re enjoying or enjoyed a great holiday Martin Luther King weekend!

It was an up-and-down week dictated by the weather and winds which is typical of this time of the year.  Earlier in the week it was calm although there were some incidents of localized rain mixed with sunshine.  Later in the week, winds got stronger generating some rougher water.

 

Surprisingly, however, given it’s winter and waters are chillier than normal, we got into some decent school-sized dorado.  Bait is difficult to get because of the winds and choppy surf, but dragging lures has been productive.

 

In addition to the dorado, tasty white bonito provided some great action.  Many folks are surprised that the white bonito are not just great sport, but also pretty good eating!  Add in some tough jack crevalle and a few firecracker yellowtail, sierra and cabrilla off the rocks and there were actually some nice catches.

TAILHUNTER 2019 TOUR

Just finished up our Sacramento Show for the International Sportsmans Expo that was at the state fairgrounds.   It was off-the-hook!  Jill and I stood and talked non-stop for 10 hours-a-day until we were hoarse!  It was great.  So many friends and new amigos.  Lots of bookings for this year.

If you’re planning on coming fishing with us, don’t wait. Dates are filling FAST!  I’m not kidding. Bookings are coming in daily and we’re booking dozens at every show.  Don’t wait.  Some dates are filled or filling fast.  If you wait until we come to a show near you, it might be too late!

If you’re reading this, we’re actually probably on the road driving from Sacramento to our next show at the Washington State Fairgrounds in Puyallup, Washington just south of Seattle.  This is the largest show in Washington and goes a whopping 5 days from Wednesday to Sunday.  We always look forward to it.

Short Attention Span Week at a Glance

Weather – A bit chilly and cool this past week.  Mostly sunny skies in the mid-70s, but also some spotty rain showers here and there.  Depends where you were.

Fishing – Quite a variety of fish.  Hard to tell really when there’s not many folks fishing this time of year. However, the folks that did get out fishing did OK with some decent catches.

Type of Fish Caught This Week – small roosterfish, dorado, snapper, cabrilla, amberjack, bonito, needlefish, jack crevalle, small yellowtail.

Forecast – Actually some rain possibilities early in the week but hard to know where it will fall.  La Paz encompasses alot of area.  Rest of the week will be partially cloudy with highs in the mid-70’s down to the upper 50’s/ low 60’s.

Ken Ward from Alaska probably doesn’t get a chance to wear those great shorts very often, but he also doesn’t catch any dorado up there either like this nice one just outside of Bahia Muertos where he was staying at Rancho Costa. Actually, a nice sunset bite!

Some good eating! Mic Ward poses with a cabrilla and small amberjack some of the best cold water fish this time of year.

Not a whole lot happening this past week to be honest.  It was a bit cold and chilly and not a lot of folks on the water as we hit that lull after the holidays.  It’s hard to get a true assessment of fishing if there’s not that many folks getting out, but then again, there aren’t that many visitors and vacationers in the city to begin with.

 

However, there were a few out on the water who found some fun inshore action, especially on lighter tackle.  Efforts produced a wide range of species that included a few dorado and even some small roosterfish that were all released.

 

Over the reefs and rocky areas, cabrilla and yellow snapper put the bend on the rods plus bonito, sierra, jack crevalle and some smaller firecracker yellowtail and smaller amberjack.  Enough to keep folks happy and some good action.

 

This coming week looks a little cloudy and there’s even a chance of some rain with wind getting stronger and gusts to 25 mph later in the week.  The temps looks like they’ll run from the mid-50’s to 70’s.

Our 20-year-old Tailhunter website needed a re-model and facelift!

After more than a year of work, we’re excited to announce that our new and improved Tailhunter website is up and rolling!  We think it looks great.  It’s sleeker, faster and turbo-charged easier to use and more friendly for social media, cellphones and pads!

It still has a few little bumps here and there that need to be fine-tuned and we’re still adding more to it, but we’re ready to go!

Now, we jump in our Tailhuntermobile and rumble back west through Wyoming, Utah, Nevada and back to California!

From Thursday to Sunday, we’ll be at the Cal Expo Fairgrounds in SACRAMENTO for the ISE Show which is the largest fishing and hunting show in Northern California.  I hear there are over 700 booths and vendors this year from everywhere from Africa to Canada and Alaska to South America!

SHORT ATTENTION SPAN WEEK AT A GLANCE

Weather – Started a bit rough and windy but got better as the week went on.  Mostly sunny with daytime temps in the 70’s.  Some isolated showers.  Coming week almost a duplicate.

Waters – Seem to be getting cooler and cloudier, but there’s still some warm patches holding warm water species like dorado and tuna.

Fishing – Quite a surprise.  As the weather got better, so did the fishing. Ended up with some really great inshore action with quite a variety of unusual catches with both warm and cold water species!

Fish Caught this week:  (cold water species) yellowtail, cabrilla, pargo, snapper, sierra.  (Warm water species) dorado, tuna (hooked), wahoo (hooked), roosterfish, bonito, jack crevalle, triggerfish

THE BIG PICTURE and the REST of the STORY…

 

All the way from Alaska, Mic Ward boats one of the first yellowtail of the season that bit a trolled Rapala. Mic was staying at Bahia Muertos near La Paz at Rancho Costa Resort.

Dorado in January right off the Punta Perrico rocks! That’s amigo, Gary Wagner who owns the Giggling Marlin Bar in Cabo and Rancho Costa Resort.

Lew Cox from San Diego just wanted to get away for some sunshine and had one day to fish and got a bit of variety for the fish box including sierra, dorado and bonito.

Steve Green has himself a dandy cabrilla caught just outside of Bahia Muertos. Steve is from chilly Wyoming and was staying at the Rancho Costa Resort.

Great shot. Great fish! First yellowtail bite of the season! Gary got this forkie trolling a Rapala X-Rap 40 deep diver.

 

Windier weather at the beginning of the week (and the year) put fishing on the slow side, but as the week went on, conditions improved and a nice variety of fish showed up especially for our anglers fishing in and around Muertos Bay.

 

In fact, the bite was surprising for the incredible mixed bag of both warm and cold water species.

 

Warm water species included dorado and smaller roosterfish as well as bonito and jack crevalle.  Cold water fish, more common to this type of year included our first yellowtail of the season plus cabrilla, snapper, pargo, and sierra.  Live bait is a bit difficult, but the fish showed no hesitation biting jigs, lures and trolled Rapalas.

 

None of the fish were far offshore…often within casting distance of the beach or rocks.

Nothing really big, but for many folks just down to find some sunshine and not really caring too much about what was biting, it was great action.  Often you just never knew what was going to bite and at times the bite was full-speed.  Anglers working light tackle really had a hoot.

 

Gray whales are starting to show up and the vanguard of the migration are moving in.  Whale watching season should be good and we’ll start running trips in about 2 weeks.

The whales have been more than cooperative to come visit with the boaters!

TAILHUNTER 2019 ROAD TOUR

Here we go!  Jill and Jonathan are on the road again!  For over 2 decades we spend the first 3 months of the year in the gypsy caravan covering over 15,000 miles and all the big fishing and hunting shows in the Western U.S.  It’s a great opportunity to see old friends and meet new amigos!

This week, Jill and I will be in our booth at the Denver Convention Center for the International Sportsmens Expo!  It runs from Thursday to Sunday (January 10-13th) and it’s an incredible fun event for the whole family!

There will be hundreds of fishing and hunting outfitters from Canada, Alaska, Mexico, Africa and just about every other location on the globe.  Tons of gear and new equipment.  RV’s and camping.  Off-road and boating.  It’s all there.

We’ll be in our booth for the entire 4 days.  Come by and say hi and let’s talk about fishing in La Paz .  Dates are filling so let’s get you set up!

Enough stuff for 3 months on the road! Me, Jilly and Catlyn! Driving through Texas on our way to Denver this week!

Short Attention Span – Week at a Glance

Weather – Sunny to partially cloudy all week . Highs mid-70’s.  Lows down to a chilly high 40’s.  Had quite a bit of wind this past week.  One day the port captain shut down the port from all boat traffic in-or-out because of the rough waters.

Fishing – Not bad considering the weather and time of year.  It could be rough, but both warm and cold water species caught.

Fish Caught This Week:  Dorado, pargo, cabrilla, snapper, tuna, white bonito, Pacific bonito, jack crevalle.

The Big Picture and Rest of the Story…

Billy Wong from Colorado Springs was staying at Muertos Bay at the Rancho Costa Resort and earlier in the week found the tuna as well as dorado and bonito.

Nice mix of fish for Dave Perkins who had one day later in the week under cloudy skies and put dorado, cabrilla and two kinds of bonito in the ice chest.

 

Billy Wong with a chunky bonito that provided some good rod-bending all week.

It was a bit of a windy, cold and cloudy week for the Christmas holidays, especially as the week went on.  However, being off-season, there weren’t that many folks out anyway or wanting to fish, specifically because of the winds and rough seas.   There was even one day where it was so rough the La Paz port captain closed to port prohibiting all boat traffic in, our, or on the water.

 

For the sturdier folks that did go out and braved it, the fishing was about as erratic as the weather, but they found some fish.  And it was a nice mix.  Fortunately, it was all close to shore too which offered more protection.

 

There were a few nice yellowfin tuna hooked.  Surprisingly, also some scattered dorado as well.  A bit unusual to have warm water species like these hanging out this late in the year.   Add in some snapper, cabrilla and pargo fishing over the rocks and reefs plus nice numbers of bonito that are always good for action and it wasn’t too bad.

 

The coming week looks like about the same with some strong bouts of wind with partially cloudy skies and temps in the high-70’s and at night in the mid-to-high-60’s.
