First timer hits a big one! Jay Gibbons from Payette, Idaho got in the middle of a school of big dog-tooth snapper near Cerralvo Island with Captain Gerardo of the Tailhunter fleet and managed to get this big one to the boat and losing several others to the rocks and big teeth. He was fishing for rooster fish with a big sabalo (ladyfish) when the school of snapper came up from the rocks.

Kelsea Taylor from Kansas was visiting with her husband for the first time to La Paz and got in a day of fishing. She tangled with dorado, but locked into this nice yellowfin tuna that’s about as big as she is, but she battled it tough. She’s shown with her husband, Dave, and captain Jorge from the Tailhunter Fleet.

Jake Spencer wrestles with a big thick yellowtail to try to hold it still for a photo as the fish slaps him around! He got a great photo, nonetheless! He was fishing with our Tailhunter La Paz fleet out’ve La Paz Bay.

Captain Victor knows something is up. Jason hooked 2 wahoo and thought he had a “slow day.” He didn’t know how prized wahoo are. Anglers come for years and never get one. He also didn’t know how good eating they are and gave away all his fish! I told him a chunk of wahoo can go for as much as $50 a pound!

Just when we thought the cold-water fishing was done, the yellowtail came on strong this week for our La Paz and Las Arenas fleets for Tailhunter. Rick Choate from Boise, Idaho shows off a monster yellowtail he got on live bait near Espirito Santo Island. This was his first time fishing with Tailhunter and visiting La Paz

Randy Choate, our good amigo from Payette ID, gets a hand from Tailhunter Captain Boli with another big yellowtail. This is very big fish…I think Randy is about 6’4″ tall. Others were lost but Randy said the yellowtail were hitting baits right on the surface!

From McCammon, Idaho, Tom Mullican is making two trips to La Paz this year. He’s coming back in the fall, but this early trip paid off with a huge mullet snapper (pargo liso) that really went back and forth before he got it in the boat. He was using live bait.

Nice day and some really nice amberjack for Captain Armando with Al and Lisa Salmen who only had one day to get on the water with us and did well.

One of our favorite funny guys (“I am always in trouble with Jilly!), Tom Ames holds up another of the big yellowtail that decided to come up and bite this week with our La Paz fleet.

Whoa! That’s a monster cabrilla for Eric Davignon from Sacramento CA with host Gary Wagner our amigo, who owns the Giggling Marlin bar in Cabo and the Rancho de Costa in Bahia de los Muertos.

This man can fish…and he can eat fish! Our amigo, Kevin Shiotani gives a thumbs up to 4 yellowtail on the concrete boat ramp at Bahia de los Muertos. The fish were picked up off Cerralvo Island.

Tom has had some kind of a week with a giant pargo, wahoo, tuna, yellowtail AND dorado in the boat! But see the photo below of how it was hooked!

FULL MOON BRINGS BIG FISH!

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay Fishing Report for Week of May 15-22, 2016

I’m not sure if the big full moon did us any favors, but it surely didn’t seem to hurt us this week. We had some really strong winds come up early that were a bigger nuisance than the moon but when the winds tapered off later in the week, fishing cranked up. There weren’t ALOT of fish but the ones we seemed to get were TOADS and HORSES! Plus there were some surprise bites too!

LA PAZ

What’s going on here? I was pretty much writing off the cold-water bite for the season. It’s getting warm. The sun is out and the waters and air are showing summer everywhere. We had not gotten yellowtail in weeks. Even when they were biting, it was so-so. I would not have even called it a yellowtail season. With El Nino, our waters were just too warm to give us much of a cold water season.

Then, out’ve nowhere, the yellowtail start biting. And not little weenie firecrackers either. These were 25-50 pound sluggers that came pretty close to pulling guys outta their socks. We got a few, but probably lost 3 for every fish boated.

And these were NOT fish skulking down deep. These fish were FOAMING and crashing on the surface and were taking flylined (no weight) live and dead baits! Some guys had some epic battles.

I don’t know how long these grade of fish will be around. But, we’re enjoying it! Or getting frustrated by lost fish! Up to now, I’ve not hesitated sending guys out with light tackle because all we had was some smallish fun dorado. But these yellowtail are busting 40, 50 and 60 pound test, especially if the angler doesn’t pressure the fish to keep the out’ve the rocks! Or conversely, the anglers panic and horse the fish and break off by not letting the fish run a bit. (It’s a delicate balance that just makes it fun…until you lose the fish!).

Those little dorado are still around too and we’re seeing a bit more activity with pargo and cabrilla too! Billfish are around, but not yet willing to chew!

LAS ARENAS

Again, just like with our Taihunter La Paz fleet…it’s crazy! Cold water monsters came back!

Big yellowtail showed up to about 40 pounds…

Amberjack to 30 pounds…

Sierra, big cabrilla, jack crevalle, delicious white bonito…

And the return of the big dog-tooth cubera snapper and the mullet snapper (pargo liso)! We had big schools of them near the island spawning just like in the old days so that it looked like a “Japanese koi pond on steroids” with 20-50 pound fish swirling and crashing! We lost quite a few fish in the shallow waters, but the fish that came in were beasts!

And then, late in the week, not only did the 20-40 pound wahoo show up, but we also hooked some yellowfin tuna as well…footballs of 15-25 pounds! Again, we lost more fish than we caught, but you never knew what was out there.

Surprisingly, not many rooster fish were caught, but that could also be because we didn’t have that many guys out chasing them with the other species that have shown up.

Tickled! Former Basque weightlifter Johnny Vergara is her with us this week for the first time and got slammed by a couple of yellowtail today and couldn’t believe the power when his arms started cramping up! “These fish don’t nibble like the trout in Idaho!” Different set of muscles too! Great to see a first timer lit up and light up and having fun!

Captain Pancho of the Tailhunter fleet on the beach at Bahia de los Muertos with a big late-season yellowtail for Dan Moreno from San Jose who took the big fork tail on live bait and 40 pound test.

Our Colorado flyfishing guys had a nice day of action on white bonito (very edible) and a big pargo mulato. On the beach at Muertos.

Barry Langley lives in Guadalajara now, but is originally from England and had one day to fish while visiting La Paz for the first time and got this nice wahoo on live bait just outside of Bahia de los Muertos fishing with the Tailhunter fleet.

We love this lady’s photos! Laura Page from Colorado always has the BEST smiles when she’s holding a fish like this dorado taken on the fly outside of La Paz Bay.

I don’t think Roger Thompson has ever been seen holding a small fish! On the yo-yo iron, Roger got this slugger of a yellowtail.

Lots of color on this fresh dorado that Tom Page got after lots of work on the fly from the area near Espirito Santo Island.

MIXED VARIETY AGAIN EVERY DAY A MYSTERY!

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay Fishing Report for Week of May 8-15, 2016

Overall, it was another mixed week of fishing for us. We had quite a variety of fish as both warm and cold water species remained in local waters as we transition to summertime conditions. Some boats did well. Others had to work harder for their fish. The next day, it could totally reverse with the “hot boats” going cold and the “cold boats” jumping the fish. Conversely, one day, all the fish would be cold water fish like cabrilla and pargo and some sierra or an occasional yellowtail. Next day we’d hit a tuna or wahoo and dorado, all warm water fish in pretty much exactly the same spots that produced the cooler water fish the day before. It was all mixed up!

Early in the week it got a little windy and we even had a touch of thunder, lightning and a sprinkle or two that didn’t deter anyone from being on the water. This week looks to be a little breezier according to forecasts, but overall, temperatures in the high 80’s and sunny.

However, strangely, as I’m writing this Sunday morning…it’s really windy and there’s some raindrops falling even tho’ there’s not a thing on the weather forecast!

One other note…I would have more roosterfish photos every week, but almost all of them get released so unless the anglers take a photo of it out on the water, I don’t get a photo to post up. But we ARE catching roosters!

La Paz

Our Tailhunter La Paz fleet continued to make it’s bread and butter on the other side of the bay by San Juan de la Costa where that school of mini-dorado has been good to us. We just wish the bigger models would show up. However, the bite wasn’t as generous as it had been when we usually got limits. This past week, maybe 3-6 fish was about it.

However, other areas started producing a bit bitter with some big amberjack coming off el Bajo seamount as well as Cabrilla plus rooster fish and some pargo and cabrilla biting around the open spots on Espirito Santo Island and around El Coyote. Bigger bait produced the bigger fish and for those who knew how to yo-yo iron, bigger fish were willing…especially some large yellowtail that we haven’t seen in about a month!

There was also a spot around La Reyna lighthouse and Punta Norte at Cerralvo Island that kept showing signs of tuna and some of our guys finally hit some as well as yellowtail and cabrilla for a fleeting bite. But that was one of the spots the was hot…then went cold the next day.

Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay

This again, is where most of our variety came from. Bait is still an issue, but we’re using a variety of things including some sardines, mackerel, ladyfish, mullet and frozen and live ballyhoo.

Every day, it’s different. Yellowtail popped up again early in the week. Wahoo made a small showing as well. Round that out with jack crevalle, alot of white bonito (very edible!) cabrilla, pargo, sierra and roosters up to about 40 pounds. Late in the week some decent dorado showed up near the buoys for really the first time and there’s been flurries of fast moving tuna we’re seeing but no takers…all very promising!

The issue is mostly one of predictability. We never know what’s going to bite! I tell guys (and gals) to just let the captain take you to the fish. Fish for what’s possible, and you’ll have the best success. If you go for the home run, you COULD get some, but you could also strike out. If you have more than one day, that’s a good shot but if you only have one day and you have it in your mind that you ONLY want wahoo…that could be the day that only the bonito bite! Go with the flow and catch what’s biting. Everyone is getting fish!

The man behind the mask is Garrett Sill from Utah who hurt this nice wahoo with a live mackerel just off the rocks at Punta Perrico. They had a pretty great day…2 wahoo and 4 released roosterfish between 20 and 40 pounds! They had several slabs cooked up at our Tailhunter Restaurant.

THERE’S SOME LARGER FISH AROUND!

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay Fishing Report for Week of April 17-24, 2016

OK week of fishing. Some hits. Some misses. Pretty much great weather except we dealt with a full moon plus winds later in the week that made it tougher than it needed to be. But, the opportunities were there! A number of folks will tell you they had fish on or just weren’t ready for the power; the hit; or just bad “fishing luck” and missed fish. It happens. All you can do is smile and realize it’s part of the sport and it’s still Mexico and everyone is still having a good time.

LA PAZ

Still holding lots of “promise” and I use that word loosely. The island north of us, Espirito Santo, still isn’t really kicking in like it should, but there was a spot of yellowtail that poked up just outside of Balandra Bay that got everyone excited then seemed to shut down just a fast. Perhaps because everyone suddenly descended on it and the increased traffic spooked the fish to lockjaw or move back to deeper cooler waters. These fish were slugger 25-35 pounders. I’m surprised they even showed up given the warmth of the water, but while they were around no one was complaining.

The most encouraging bite was the dorado just on the other side of the bay. It’s been a great fall-back for action as the fish are small 5-pounders that would go furious at times and produced easy limits. For alot of the “one-time-one-day fishermen” we have right now who only have one day to fish or don’t have alot of experience, it’s been good to send them there so they get bent and catch some fish and have a good time. Honestly, the fish are dinks by anyone’s standards and I’m happy to say that alot of them are getting released with clients bringing enough for dinner at our Tailhunter Restaurant or somewhere in town.

However, there’s more and more sargasso weed appearing in the area that make excellent cover for bait and draws in more dorado. And the dorado are getting bigger too with some larger “models” showing up in the catches. We’ll keep you posted.

LAS ARENAS

All I can say is Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay is “mercurial.” It changes from day-to-day. There’s no figuring it .

One day, some pargo and cabrilla, bonito and jack crevalle are the catches.

The next day, we get into wahoo, rooster fish, jacks, bonito, a few dorado, some yellowtail…There’s surely nothing written in stone or that you can hang your hat on.

Like I said at th beginning, the opportunities have been there. We LOST alot of fish. When the bigger and better quality fish hit, they’re beasts! A 40-pound rooster or zooming 25-50 pound wahoo is an experience alot of folks have never had. Our fish “do not nibble!” LOL They slam and they run and they battle like they’re possessed .

Several wahoo were lost. Several big roosters were lost. Two of our folks battled a marlin for 3 hours on light tackle and finally had to bust it off. They did a great job, but knew it couldn’t go on any longer and purposely buttoned down the drag and had the fish to the boat several times. We’ll call that a legal catch! But, the point is the number of “catches” did not match the number of “bites!” So, basically, fishing wasn’t bad. Catching was a bit more erratic.

Our flyfishers did OK this week. Some jack crevalle, some bonito and a couple of roosters and wahoo they got to take the flies, but weren’t able to set the hooks on! They had fun. Live bait for chum is an issue. Hopefully, looking for some improvement. The season is early.

Few guys were as happy to finally get their first rooster fish as Taylor Rowland from Anchorage who works for Extreme Expeditions in Alaska as a hunting and flyfishing guide. He took this big boy just along the western rocks at Bahia de Los Muertos fishing with Tailhunter Sportfishing. The fish was released.

Anniversary sierra for Ann Armstrong from Seattle! This ended up as ceviche at the Tailhunter Restaurant. Ann is from Washington.

Tough jack crevalle (also known as “Toro” or “Bullfish” for their power) caught by another of our great Washington folks, Mark Bonsack. The fish was released as they don’t make good eating.

On the fly! Pro hunting and fishing guide, Jeff Pralle, put this dorado on the boat with his flyrod from the other side of the bay near San Juan de la Costa. Jeff heads up Extreme Expeditions in Alaska.

Damon Harvey from Prudoe Bay, Alaska got this tough bonito to eat the fly. He got several and released all.

Whoa! Even with the camera angle, this is a HUGE triggerfish taken by Roger Armstrong from Alaska. It’s a giant! They can get pretty mean when hooked but one this size is a brute. They also caught and released several roosterfish between 20 and 35 pounds.

The cabrilla are nice-sized these days. Gerardo has a double handful of two nice ones! These seabass make great eating.

MIXED BAG AS FISHING WARMS… A BIT

La Paz-Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay Fishing Report for week of April 10-17, 2016

Not at all a bad week of fishing. It’s still early in the season and the fish are still trying to come on, but anglers this week were treated to quite a variety of fishing. Not great fishing…nothing spectacular as we’re still not up-to-speed, but there was some fun action to be had, especially on inshore species like rooster fish, cabrilla, pargo and sierra. The biggest issue, right now is getting live bait which has been difficult to find for all fleets. El Nino lingers.

Oh…and the winds came up again late in the week. Still some residual winter stuff so we kept folks off the water on Friday and Saturday and they made it up on other days when it was calmer.

LA PAZ FISHING

I’m surprised fishing isn’t better. In any other year, conditions look ideal. Warming clear blue water with tons of sargasso weed floating around which normally draws dorado and other species. However, Espirito Santo Island and the other usual spots have been rather unproductive. About the only spot is an area across the bay at San Juan de la Costa which has at least produced good numbers of small dorado which have provided some really good action. However, the fish are very small and anglers have been catching and releasing many keeping only some for dinner or so. But, that’s about the only action and I expect things to change.

LAS ARENAS/ MUERTOS BAY

Again, this is where all the variety is. Every day is still different and the bit can be erratic, but there are fish to be caught. It’s just difficult from day-to-day to know what’s going to be caught.

At the island and near Punta Perrico, there are some wahoo and yellowtail down deeper closer to the structure. As well, some of those same areas are producing snapper, pargo (several varieties), and some really exceptionally large cabrilla. As well, there’s larger-than-normal sierra, jack crevalle and bonito as well.

The best catches have been on rooster fish. Again, not everyday, but if that’s what you want to target and have a few days, chances are good for fish in the 20-40 pound class. Not the big boys yet, but plenty big for most folks and still full-of-fight. All the fish we got this week were released.

Verda Boyd and Captain Jorge teamed up for a nice speedy wahoo that’s going to make for some great eating. The ‘hoo took a live bait. Verda fishes with us twice a year now for about 10 years usually with her husband, Tim Zimmer, but this time, it was a girls trip!

Our Las Vegas amiga, Yolanda Wheeler, recently retired from the Las Vegas Police Department and came down for an all-girls trip topped by her first wahoo. Captain Jorge does the honors.

You can tell a professional fisherman by the way he poses with his fish. You can also tell who the flyfishers are! Jeff Pralle left -55 degree weather in Alaska with Extreme Expeditions to enjoy a few days in the sun with his flyrod and friends. He didn’t get this one on the flyrod, but nevertheless, this jack crevalle (Toro or Bull in Spanish) is well-named for being a rugged tough fish and this one was no exception.

One of the funnest guys to fish with…the man with the “million dollar smile”… Rick Kasper from Wyoming with some really big sierra! I like Rick’s “stringer.”

Captain Gerardo was on fire with the roosters this week as he helps Helen Bevens with another rooster just outside of Muertos Bay. Helen is from Kenai, Alaska. The pez gallo was released.

Overall, in terms of quality fish, Mark Bonsack from Washington had one of the better weeks of fishing despite tough conditions. He hung in there every day and fished hard. Here’s one of his yellowtail. A couple of bigger fish during the week broke off.

Some of the best eating fish…Helen and Mark Bevans got a number of tasty huachinango off the rocks!

Another pro who know how to pose his fish, Taylor Rowland is also an outfitter and flyfishing guide with Extreme Expeditions. He’s got himself a feisty bonito here that he got out’ve Muertos Bay.

Mark Bevans got quite a variety of fish this week including these two nice sierra that ended up as two big plates of ceviche at our Tailhunter Restaurant.

ANGLERS HAVE TO WORK HARD FOR FISH!

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay Fishing Report for Week of April 3-10, 2016

Fishing was a bit more promising this past week, but still not quite up to snuff and hats off to so many of our anglers who really kept at and worked hard and still kept smiling even when fishing was scratchy at best.

It’s hard to pinpoint. We are definitely transitioning from cooler to warmer water species so we’ve got quite a variety from sierra and pargo to wahoo and dorado. But the issue is the consistency. It’s just not the same every day. One boat catches fish, but another doesn’t. One day everyone gets something and the next day it’s like pulling teeth. One area has a good bite and the next day that same area can’t get a bump.

I will say one thing…you gotta be on your game. Fishing is fishing, but if you have a line in the water, you never know what’s gonna happen. The fishing would have been 180 degrees better if we hadn’t lost so many quality fish.

Some of that was just…well…that’s fishing! Big fish are tougher fish. Some of that was due to inexperience. Everyone wants a big fish and then it happens and they don’t know what to do with it. That’s part of the fun and learning process too! No one got completely skunked, but by the same token I felt their pain of losing fish or a tough fishing day!!! I appreciated all the folks who still came back laughing after a tough day and ready to go again the next day. You’re champs. You know who you are!

Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay

If you can call it that, our fleet here had the most “consistent” fishing. I use that term really loosely. Consistent insofar as there were fish to be caught and was the most productive. But it was erratic. There was no gauging if it were going to be an OK day or less than stellar. Some boats would do better than others. Nothing for certain.

There were surely ALOT of different species as is characteristic of this time of year. It’s like an aquarium list!

About the only thing we didn’t connect on was a marlin or tuna this week!

It was encouraging to see us hit more roosters. They weren’t the big slugs, but fun enough fish in the 20-40 pound class close to shore and more than enough tug for most folks. Wahoo as well hit bait and lures and for the two we got this week, there were about 10 lost. The fish were 20-30’s. However, larger ones in the 50 pound class were seen and one fish was swimming around that two of my captains swore was over 70 or 80 pounds cruised the area, but just wouldn’t go!

Inshore near structure and the beaches, you never know what’s gonna come up. Really larger than normal sierra up to about 8 pounds…some trophy-sized cabrilla (sea bass) and huachinango (red snapper) made for good action.

Had our first flyfishers of the year and they really had to work hard. It was breezy and the bait supply isn’t very hefty, but they did get a few and are still here for more days so we’ll see how they do.

La Paz

Our La Paz fleet was either batting zero or getting a ton of “base hits.” What I mean to say is that our pangas that went over towards the islands or hit the seamounts looking for larger grades of fish like big yellowtail and amberjack simply struck out. Not only us, but some of the other fleets as well. This week it was just a desert there. Barely anything. It’s surprising also because sargasso weed is building up so you would think dorado would be rolling under the weed beds.

When I say, “base hits” there a whole bunch of teenie trout-sized dorado just near the outside of La Paz Bay. It saved us. Those fish are under 5-pounds and they’re massed there. Just for pure action, imagine schools of giant trout. That’s about it. Double and triple hook-ups. Several of our pangas got limits and were back by lunch time very happy. Our other veteran guys who ran into them smiled and moved on to something else, not wanting to bother with all these babies. However, for first-timers and families and kids, these fish were way fun. Lots of catch-and-release too! Some boats hooked as many as 20-25 fish and released most keeping just a few for dinner.

Big hugs and gracias to Grant and Carol Darby and their family from Washington who brought down a full ice chest of school supplies and clothing for our local kids in the pueblo.

Over the last two years, our Tailhunter Family and Tribal Members have filled empty ice chests to bring down OVER ONE TON of clothing, school supplies, hygiene items, shoes, and other things for our needy school kids, the women’s shelter and other charities here in La Paz.

SPRING ARRIVES and CONDITIONS IMPROVE

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay Fishing Report for Week of March 20-27, 2016

Spring and Easter week combined for an OK week of fishing. The winds largely left us alone. The sun was out and it was a good week for all the tourists in town for for spring break although La Paz doesn’t come close to being like many other Mexican destinations. Comparatively speaking it’s still a sleepy city. However, Holy Week (Semana Santa) is one of the busiest times for Mexican locals to travel especially to visit families and La Paz is a great destination to get some beach time away from the bigger cities in the mainland and the beaches can be quite crowded…much moreso than usual…with campers and picnickers.

In fact, during Holy Week, camping in Mexico can b a bit hectic. It’s not like in the U.S. where you have designated camping areas with facilities and a little ranger station house to enter and leave. The beaches in Mexico are all public. So wherever folks want to drop a tent and all the accessories, you can take up as much space as you want. Literally, sometimes the more popular beaches have tents and awnings just inches away from each other. It’s a big like mini-Woodstock! But, still very festive like any beach and you can smell the carne asada on the barbecues for miles! By next week, the beaches will be empty again!

Anyway for fishing, nothing spectacular, but steady OK fishing. Nothing really to write home about but we caught fish. They were a little hard to locate at times, but this is still very early in the season and we’re still recovering from a big cold windy winter that really tore up the area and made fishing tough. So, here’s how it broke down this week.

LA PAZ

This is the first real week or two that we’ve had our Tailhunter La Paz Fleet out since late October. It’s just been too windy so we’ve kept everyone fishing from Las Arenas. However, winds are down and folks don’t want to take the 1 hour drive with us to Las Arenas so we put out the boats.

It started slowly and still hasn’t gotten a full head of steam. Plus, some days it’s still pretty bumpy with winds.

However, inshore, we’re finding some decent-sized pargo and cabrilla along with sierra and off the drop-offs there’s some big yellowtail starting to poke up. But, finding the spot is still hit-or-miss. Somedays we find ‘em or one boat finds them. Other days it’s a miss.

The surprising bite is that we’re getting some nice schools of firecracker-sized dorado. With all the families and kids in town, this has been a hoot. The fish are 5-10 pounds max and can be very voracious if you hit the spot. Some days, there’s limits to be caught with the best spot being off Espirito Santo Island.

LAS ARENAS

Still the most consistent fishing. We’re still hoping that with the winds tapering the bait will come back up.

No doubt, there’s still wahoo in the area with some decent 20-30 pound fish falling to the darker Rapalas and Yo-Zuri lures. As well, the big red pargo liso are schooling in spawn mode off several spots near Cerralvo Island like Los Pilis and then also near Punta Perrico. Bonito, jack crevalle and sierra have rounded out the catch along with Cabrilla. It’s hard to judge Holy Week when there’s so many “non-fishermen” out whacking the waters. Some days it can seem like everyone and their brother has a boat on the water and 4, 5, 6 anglers have rods and not really knowing what they’re doing. So, there’s some traffic out there and that can spook the fish. But, if you’re with a real captain and/ or know what you’re doing, there’s fish to be caught.

WHAT? SNOW AND HAIL IN LA PAZ?

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay Fishing Report for Week of March 7-13, 2016

Not many fishermen in town this week, but it’s kind of the little lull before the Spring Break and Easter Fishermen come in and the season kicks into gear. The big story this week was the weather…again! But not for the usual windy days we’ve had this winter. The big weather story was the fact that it SNOWED!

That’s right. Historically, no one can ever remember that happening! We’ve been having 85 degree weather for several weeks but then earlier this week, some cells came down from the north. There was rain. Then some areas like Los Planes near Muertos Bay got pelted with hail…I think I’ve only seen that happen once in 20 years! Some areas of La Paz also got hit.

But up in the higher areas like San Antonio, they actually got a good dusting of snow! An incredible first! It even stuck for awhile. Not enough to go sledding or anything like that or even make margaritas out’ve it, but more like someone took powdered sugar to everything!

Just another El Nino bit of craziness.

But, back to normalcy…there were some fish things happening too! Some fat yellowtail were taken at the south end of Cerralvo in Rapalas. Fish ran up to about 25 pounds. A few smaller amberjack were also taken and one fish estimated at close to 80 pounds was picked up and lost at gaff. Supposedly, the northern end of Cerralvo is holding some really big amberjack according to the commercial guys.

Inshore…yup..inshore, there are still wahoo up to about 40 pounds that are again falling to the dark Rapalas/ Yo-zuri type lures. Gotta be honest…there’s a real lack of live or dead bait right now. Hope that changes. But we’re able to scrape up some sardines and some mackerel here and there or use frozen stuff.

Smaller lures and cut bait are working on cabrilla and sierra and some big pargo up to about 20 pounds are in the spawn mode in the usual rocky areas, but especially off Punta Perrico and los Pilis near the east side of the island.

TAILHUNTER ROAD TOUR WINDS IT UP FOR THE SEASON – IN TWO DIFFERENT PLACES!

Rick and Lisa Gibson just booked their first trip ever to La Paz after trying for 3 years. We’ll see them in August!

We’ve been on the road driving since before Christmas and our 2015 Tailhunter Road Tour has taken us from the chilly snows of Billings, Montana…to Denver…to Sacramento…to Seattle…Portland…Yakima…Long Beach CA…to Scottsdale AZ and now we wind it up 3 months later in two different places!

Jill will travel to the San Diego area to the Del Mar Fairgrounds for the awesome Fred Hall Fishing and Boating Show. I’ll be in Sandy, Utah just south of Salt Lake City at one of our favorite shows, the ISE show at the South Towne Expo Center. Both shows run Thursday to Sunday. We hope you come see us and let’s set up your 2016 La Paz fishing trip!

Our buddy, Sgt. Tom Rautert (ret.) is coming back in July to La Paz for a 4th straight year!

Craig Sanford brought the family to the show on his birthday just to see us! Wife Kathryn and daughter Ashley will are all coming back to La Paz in October!

But first, just a quick thank you to all our Arizona amigos who came by our booth at the Westworld facilities in Scottsdale and for all your hospitality.

Great amigos, Mike and Heidi Malano stopped in to see us. Mike was all-American center at San Diego State and played with the Vikings a few years, but now lives back in Arizona!

Now that’s a fish! Leif Dover from Atlanta GA visits us several times a year. He punctuated a week of great fishing with this 40-pound slab of wahoo just outside of Muertos Bay!

It’s not just the number of fish, it’s the fact that besides the nice wahoo, these are pargo..really tough fish to put in the boat for Lief and amigo, Brian O’Neil. They had several days like this during the week.

PARGO LEAD OFF A GOOD WEEK

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay Fishing Report for Week of Feb 29-March 6, 2016

For the first time in months, I can say that wind was not a factor in the fishing this past week. It might have been the nicest week all season. If you’ve been reading our fishing reports, you know that winds have plagued us for months as we’ve had probably the windiest winter in memory. You would also know that when the winds don’t blow, there’s some pretty good fishing to be had.

And that’s exactly what happened. One seems to follow the other.

But, again, there were some surprises. When the wind has lain down in the past, we got crazy warm water species of fish like marlin, sailfish, dorado and even tuna.

This time, we got more traditional winter fish. In fact, we got some of the most sought-after cooler water species in the list for our areas as the pargo liso (giant mullet snapper) rocked our anglers and bent rods. Historically, during this time of the year, the pargo come up in certain shallow areas and school up while they spawn. It’s quite a sight to often see an undulating mass of copper-colored water that’s really schools of 10-40 pound pargo much like a giant koi pond on steroids. Even more incredible when the big school starts to feed and blows up on the surface of the water. Ever seen those crazy TV movies of piranha ? Well, you get the idea except these are ham-sized slugger fish tearing up the surface!

Well, the pargo were that tough 5-20 pound size that confounds so many anglers because they bust off in the rocks. Believe me these are tough fish and generally over the years I tell people that if you hook 10, you’ll maybe get one to the boat! That’s how tough they are. I’ve never seen a fish piss off and frustrate like pargo!

In additon to the pargo, however, we also got other fish we normally see during these months This included cabrilla (sea bass), jack crevalle, amberjack, sierra, bonito and even a few dorado and wahoo…the latter two adding to the mystery because wahoo and dorado are warm water species. The cool thing is that these fish were not in deep water or far off-shore. On the contrary, like the pargo, those were shallow water catches!

The dorado weren’t big. Maybe 10 pounders which are a good eating-size. The wahoo were really nice trophies in the 10-40 pound class.

Looking at the forecast, winds might be coming up again this week. Surely stronger than this past week. There is even a chance of some rain early this week. We’ll see!

Whew! What a week. Jill and I just had a spectacular week even though we had to split up. She was up at the Idaho Sportsman’s Show in Boise. I was at the Long Beach Convention Center for the 70th Annual Fred Hall Fishing and Boating Show. We’re a little goofy from the long week apart and from all the great folkw we talked to but are sure grateful to all the amigos who came by to chat with us about fishing in La Paz or even just to say hi! Thanks for all the smiles! We’re looking forward to seeing many of you this year in La Paz!

Now, after almost 3 months on the road, our Tailhunter Tour takes us to Scottsdale, Arizona for the International Sportsmans Expo at the Westworld Expo. More like it…for this time of year. Sierra in the bay like this one that’s headed for the ceviche bowl!

Inshore catches including snapper, pargo, some nice cabrilla, and bonito, among others wasn’t bad this week at all!

Yes! It’s that time for the BIG SHOW! The 70th Annual Fred Hall Show…the mega fishing and hunting show at the Long Beach Convention Center. It’s THIS WEEK!

GOT GREAT WEATHER…THERE’S FISH…BUT NOT SO MANY ANGLERS!

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay Fishing Report for Week of Feb. 21-28, 2016

After a brutal winter of winds, we’ve had two of the calmest weeks of the year these past two weeks. There was a day or two of winds, but nothing like we’ve been experiencing. The only issue is that being off-season, there’s not really any fishermen around. In about a month, we’ll be loaded, but right now, if you want the beach or water to yourself, it’s like a beach in a Corona Beer commercial. Find your beach!

Of course, that’s not to say that the winds are over for good, but it’s been really nice lately with daytime temps in the 80’s. Perfect beach weather and that’s what we have in town right now. Alot of snow-birds enjoying the beaches and sunshine and the only ice they’re seeing is inside the rim of a margarita glass.

As for fishing, as I said, not many anglers this past week. Earlier in the week, we did find some spots of yellowtail that went about 25 pounds along with the usual winter species of cabrilla, pargo and jack crevalle that were alot of fun. Also, we had a few wahoo around, but each hookup came off, but the fish were definitely there! Later in the week, we didn’t find any of the trophy species, but bonito and sierra filled in. Not big, but fun. Actually, more typical of what we catch this time of the year. The fish are in various places from the island to the bay.

The coming week looks good again as far as the wind and weather is concerned. We’ve got anglers this coming week so hopefully, a more complete report coming by the weekend!

As far as Jill and I, we’ll finished our shows in the beautiful Pacific Northwest and had a great time seeing so many of our amigos!

But now, it’s time to discard the heavy coats and snow clothes and rain jackets. I will be at the Long Beach Convention Center for the massive Fred Hall Fishing and Boating show that goes from Wednesday to Sunday. This is the big boy giant show. Come see us. We’ll be in our usual spot right smack in the middle of the action.

Jill will split off and head to the Boise Fairgounds in Boise, Idaho for one of our favorite shows in one of our favorite spots. She’ll be at that show Thursday to Sunday. Go say hi to her if you’re in the area and ask her about fishing in La Paz this year!

The Tailhunter Road Show continues on into it’s 3rd month! Just wrapped up in Yakima, Washington at the Central Washington Sportsman’s Show.

We’re now on our way to two different places at the same time!

Jill will be in Boise, Idaho at the Boise Sportsman’s Show from Thursday to Sunday to visit with all our good friends and clients in that pretty city.

Jonathan will be in the booth holding the fort at the Long Beach Convention Center in Long Beach CA for the Fred Hall Fishing and Boating Show that goes Wednesday to Sunday.

More typical of our winter catch and way fun on light tackle pulling them out’ve the rocks are the cabrilla (seabass) and pargo (snapper).

IT’S FEBRUARY…OR IS IT MAY?

La Paz – Las Arenas/ Muertos Bay Fishing Report for Week of Feb. 14-21, 2016

For one of the first times all winter, the winds kicked down and gave us a break with minimal interference for once. Being off-season, there still weren’t many fishermen, but for those of our clients who got on the water, they were treated to some unusually great species of fishing. Normally, our winter fishing consists of inshore species for pargo, cabrilla, jacks, bonito, sierra and other rock and reef fish. Not bad fishing and some of these species can grow to hog-size, but we’re generally not seeing the much sought-after glamour species that get all the headlines.

Well, this past week, we turned in quite a variety. And it wasn’t like we had to chase them far offshore. In generally the same inshore waters where the rock fish hang out…generally shallow waters inside Muertos Bay…just outside or over the rocks near Cerralvo Island…we got the pargo, cabrilla, snapper and sierra.

But, crazily enough, we also hit nice wahoo in the 20-40 pound class (and got bit off some) . Most of these fish were taken with trolled dark Rapalas or frozen mackerel. There’s not much in the way of live bait right now. We also got some toad yellowtail in the 25-30 pound category (and lost more). Several marlin were lost in the shallows. But, even more surprisingly, we got a few football yellowfin tuna! Nothing big, but fun 10-15 pounders were just off the beach.

We don’t usually see these species (except the yellowtail) until mid-to-late-springtime. So, these were really nice bonus fish. The other thing it that most of our folks who fish this time of year aren’t hardcore. Many are first-timers (never fished before or never visited before) or are one-timers (in town on vacation and just toss in a day of fishing). You can imagine the grins when someone from say…Wyoming or Canada or Europe used to catching trout suddenly latches onto a speedy 30 pound wahoo racing up to 70 mph or gets slammed by a fat yellowtail intent on jamming back into the rocks…fish that would give even veteran fish a run for their money!

As long as the winds stay down, anything is possible!

DIVIDING OUR FORCES

Just finishing up a great 3-day run at the Central Washington Sportsmans Show in Yakima Washington. Thanks to all our Tailhunter amigos for their great hospitality!

So, now Jill and I split it up!

We’ve been on the road now for about 9 weeks of shows. However…Due to show scheduling, we now head south…sort of. Next week, Jill and I travel to the big boy, Fred Hall show at the Long Beach Convention Center to set me up for that event (March 2-6), then she flies back north to the Boise Fairgrounds in Boise, Idaho for Idaho Sportsmans Show (March 3-6).
