Great colorful fish and photo! Captain Victor had Chris Wilber on board when he pulled on this pretty bull dorado! Dorado bites really took off this past week.

Our Kansas amigo, Adam Florence, brought another great group to see us this past week. Here he is with Captain Pancho and some of their dorado at Muertos Bay. More on the cutting table too!

That’s a PIG! Darrell “Gomer” Oleson drove all the way from Salt Lake City UT area in two days to get in some fishing with us and his last day was able to drag this huge dog-tooth snapper out’ve the rocks!

Two of the nicest new folks this week, Dan Adams and Kim Howard with a good day of dorado on the cleaning board.

Yup…the tuna picked up a little bit stronger this week as well. Chris and Mike Wilber show off two chunky YFT’s!

Now, this is a great shot! Fly guys seem to like to put their rods in their mouth, but can’t blame them when your other two hands have fish! Marie and Joe Fanelli had to cancel last year when a hurricane got in the way but were able to come down this year and spend time with us. Fun fun folks and Joe has an operation in the Amazon for peacock bass so we want to go see him! They got these dorado on the fly as well as a small tuna fishing north of La Paz!

Finally! A big roosterfish for Brent “Mountain Dew” Racker and Captain Pancho. Good shot after a good fight. The fish was released. Brent also got a huge rare milkfish and I only wish we had a better photo to post up! Brent is from Utah.

Talk about variety! This is what I mean. Take a look at Bobby and Stacy Florence’s board and you’ll see dorado, snapper, pargo, a rainbow runner and a palometa!

Captain Jorge with two of our besties! Verda Boyd from the bay area has been coming to see us sometimes 3 times a year for many years. She’s teamed up with Pam Bolles who has run the Baja Big Fish Company up in Loreto for almost 25 years and is a well-known flyfishing expert. Two great amigas of Tailhunter.

A heavy lift, but a big smile from Dan Bovee who always seems to nail a big guy on every trip. He took this big dog-tooth just outside of Bahia Muertos and is a load to lift up for the camera. Dan is from Orange Co.

It’a been about 12 years since Glenn Delmendo last came to see us but he picked up right where he left off and started the trip with a nice bull dorado!

Hard to believe these big pargo liso (mullet snapper) are still around. Normally they are a cold water fish that we only catch in the early spring. Incredible tough fighters, Riley Florence, from Kansas posts up with Captain Pancho.

Good start to vacation with a hefty table of tuna, dorado and pompano for Andrew Fernandez and Tony Smith.

Two of our newest amigos, Dale and Pete got into some nice dorado as well for their first time fishing with Tailhunters. They did quite well over 3 days!

LeaEila Oleson visited us for the first time, and as you can tell, got right into it with Captain Fili and the dorado bite.

Bill Young from Northern California had to cancel his trip last year when a hurricane got in the way. But he made it back this year and poses with some dorado and a yellowfin tuna on the beach at Bahia Muertos.

The week had a as many ups-downs and sideways as a Disneyland ride. The short version of the week was that it was the best dorado bite of the season as the fish finally seemed to hit their summer stride and the mahi finally woke up.

The week started kind of so-so. Not bad. Just not real consistent. Some of this. Some of that. Just a mix-match-hodgepodge of species.

Then, Tuesday we got hammered by an unexpected storm that was not on the radar. We call them “Toritos” (baby bulls) because they come out’ve nowhere generated by the huge amounts of heat off the ocean and lots of water vapor in the air (humidity is easily in the 60-70% range). It hit TUESDAY morning with a fury that had thunder shaking glass window panes like being in a bass drum and so much close lighting you could easily have read a book as streak after streak ripped through the sky right overhead and some bolt even hitting the water!

Turn up the sound and listen to this…This is when it was starting to “diminish!” The flashes are lightning and I was hiding under an alcove. The lighting was so close, the static electricty had the hair on my arms standing up!

The thing is, I had several dozen people ready to climb into boats that morning and as the storm passed overhead with such turbulence the rain started to come down as well, not sure what to do except wait it out. These things usually pass fairly quickly, but while you’re in it, it feels like you should be running for cover! But, we waited and despite the nervousness of all of us and what it would do to the fishing, we got everyone out…and it turned out to be the best dorado day of the year.

And it continued pretty solid all week.

Some boats did better than others then things would reverse the next day, but overall, it was pretty hard NOT to catch a dorado. The fish are scattered all over and a dull day could suddenly turn into a feeding frenzy if you hit the right spot with dorado crashing all around. Some fish were literally caught within 10 yards of the beach!

Most of the fish were respectable 10-15 pounders, but some 20’s were mixed in and a few 30-pounders were taken and larger fish lost . The only thing that diminished the bite was that once the word got out, traffic on the “honey holes” sometimes had the fish running for cover and the bite would slow until the crowds drifted to other spots.

Add to the dorado a nice smattering of yellowfin tuna that ran 10-25 pounds; some 40-60 pound roosterfish and a few wahoo (lost) plus plenty of bonito and it made for a pretty decent day of action most days for most folks. For a good number of anglers, especially some of the new-comers, they lost a lot of fish until they got the hang of it so often, numbers would be down when they got to the beach, but then find out they lost a half-dozen fish or more!

We also got into big-time dog-tooth snapper (cubera snapper) that were 30-50 pounders in the shallow rocks; pargo, cabrilla, the occasional amberjack and even rainbow runners plus a surprising showing of cold-water sierra and it was hard NOT to head home with some fish in the coolers.

BAHIA MAGDALENA TRIP

We had 6 of our amigos spend 2 days with our Bahia Magdalena folks fishing inside the mangroves as well as outside on the ridge. They had two productive days with about a dozen different species of fish in the coolers including tuna, sierra, pargo, snapper, cabrilla, halibut, triggerfish, snook and corvina.

Ready for a good day fishing the mangroves of Bahia Magdalena with Captain Rigo. It was pretty misty and drizzly sometimes but the fishing was productive.

A darned good day! 14 tuna and 14 big sierra for Jay, Ed and Matt. Lots of fish cleaning coming up!

A beast of a pargo liso! If you can pull a trophy like this out’ve the rocks, it’s quite a feat! Captain Armando with Paul Serna from Arizona on his birthday fishing trip!

Two of our long-time Tailhunter Tribe members from Oregon, Roger Hall and Wes Perkins with a couple of nice dorado and larger-than-football tuna! They had 5 on but 3 got away!

Yes! Yellowtail are still biting in August. Crazy nuts! They are cold water fish and the waters are 89 degrees right now. Mark Buchanan with friend Diana with a good-looking hamachi in the panga!

Just south of Bahia Muertos, Vito got this nice dorado on the gaff.

A pretty tiger blue! We don’t see many of these, but they are pretty fish when we get them. From San Diego, Elan Scheir got in one day of quick fishing and hit some nice dorado to take home.

Check out how close to the rocks, we can catch dorado and other fish folks think you have to go WAY out to find! Carolyn Cain with Captain Raul doing the honors. It was her biggest dorado after many visits to see us at Tailhunter.

First time down for a quick turn-around trip, but Mike Amodeo and son Nico (behind the mask) started out with a good looking table of dorado!

Lots of great first-timers this week and probably no one came in further than Ken Buono from Connecticutt! Good dorado fillets to take east!

First time for Jeff…,many times for Kip! Next door neighbors in Salt Lake City, they put alot of meat in the freezer with the big barred pargo and dog-tooth snapper.

That’s more like it!

After a slow start, it seems like we’ve settled into our summer dorodo bite finally with dorado now consistenly being about 70% of the catch these days. The fish are ranging from 5 to 20 pound on the average with some larger. They’re willing to eat bait, lures, and trolled jigs and can pretty much be found all over the area.

Some fish are solitary especially the larger ones or running in small groups. Smaller ones can be found in larger schools that can lead to some pretty wild rod-bending once you get them chewing and frenzied.

Best areas have been around the shark buoys, Punta Perrico, south of Bahia Muertos in front of Los Alamos, Punta Arena, Punta Gorda (larger fish), Punta Mejia and the southwestern and south eastern sides of Espirito Santo Island.

Overall, the fishing hasn’t been spectacular, but generally good and steady with boats averaging 3-8 fish each with other being lost or released. Some days better than others. Some boats do better than others, but it’s been pretty consistent you’re going home with dorado if you fish for a few days like most folks.

The best excitement is probably the increasing presence of tuna. This is about the time when the tuna ramp up so hopefully, this is a taste of what’s coming because it can be pretty spectacular when they get going.

For the time being, we’re still seeing some of those big toad 50-100+ pounders, but we’re seeing an increasing number of easier, but still fun footballs in the 10-40 pound class. There’s also been an uptick in the number of wahoo strikes as well as billfish getting more active.

Still, we have cold-water fish around which is really rare. Species like the big dog-tooth snapper; the big pargo liso, yellowtail, amberjack and even sierra are not unusual to find in the fish boxes. Normally, these are winter or spring-time fish.

Roosterfish are still around as well. We’re seeing them as small as 5-10 pounds, but the larger 40-60’s are still around for those trying to check one off their bucket lists.

Rounding out the catch this week with bonito, skipjack, jack crevalle, yellow snapper, cabrilla and big triggerfish as well.

TAILHUNTER COMMUNITY OUTREACH

For several years now, ever 2 or 3 weeks, we deliver several hundred pounds of needed goods around the community. That includes several under-served schools and neighborhoods, the senior home, an orphanage and a women’s shelter. Through the thoughtfulness and big hearts of our Tailhunter Tribe, several tons of goods have been distributed since 2014.

However, because I often have so many fishing photos, I don’t often have enough space to acknowledge with photos some of our friends! But, thank you all!

The Jimemez Family from Colorado year-after-year bring clothes, school supplies and other items.

Sam Sybesman (in red) himself a school teacher had a bunch of his amigos bring down several ice chests filled with great stuff.

Hundred of toothbrushes and dental items for the kids! We have a dentist go out there to show the kids how to take care of their teeth.

Retired firefighter Craig Braswell strains to hold up a hefty roosterfish estimated at 60 pounds that hit Craig’s little sardine right close to the rocks as they were fishing for shallow water pargo and cabrilla. The fish battled and pulled the panga around on light tackle for almost an hour which is why Craig says, “I could barely lift the fish!” The fish was released. Craig is from Chico C and our buddy is a long-time Tailhunter friend!

Denni Chin from Salt Lake City UT has a laugh with Captain Victor from the Tailhunter Fleet in La Paz on the beach at Bahia Muertos. It was Denni’s first La Paz trip and he took a number of fish off his bucket list including a striped marlin; several big roosterfish (released) as well as dorado and this yellowtail and tuna!

A crazy mix of fish for Trevor Akiyoshi and Ryan Vorisek hold up some of their catch that included a strange mix of fish for August. The catch included dorado (summer fish) , pompano (spring fish) and pargo liso (mullet snapper…a winter fish). Dad Mike Akiyoshi with the photobomb. They are from Upland CA. They were fishing with the Tailhunter Fleet in La Paz.

Amazing fish! Our biggest dorado of the season. It’s huge. Adam Jones is about 6′ tall and the head of the fish is turned away from the camera. He and cousin, Steve Braithwaite (photo below) tag-teamed the big fish over 40 minutes!

Our long-time amigo, Kip Slaugh, hoisted this big roosterfish on a bit of a choppy day outside of Bahia de los Muertos. The fish was released.

The gent behind the mask with Captain Monch and the trophy roosterfish is Bernie Crooks who got several nice roosterfish and released them all. Our amigo, Bernie, is from Reno, Nevada.

All of a sudden, these big dog-tooth also started chewing this week! With Cerralvo Island in the background, Kip Slaugh, lifts the thick fish on the gaff for the money shot! Great eating!

Just a wonderful shot by this young lady! Oh the joy! Chloe Crum from San Antonio, Texas makes the shot with this dorado and captain Alfredo helping from off-camera!

Love the kid shots! We’ve known Sierra Sanchez since she was smaller than this dorado and it’s fun watching her grow up every year and enjoy the fishing with her family and Captain Rogelio. Dorado…right off the rocks in shallow water!

Victor Gil Delmonte comes to visit us every year and told me this fish “really hurt me!” You can see it on his face and Captain Archangel had to give Vic a hand! He gamely battled the fish then released the pretty fish too!

Yes, you CAN have too much fun! Pete Natividad from Los Angeles with Captain Alfredo, was on his first trip to see us and had only one day to fish, but caught about 6 different species including this amberjack.

Dr. Marc Crum came to visit us for the first time from Texas and was able to put this nice roosterfish aboard for the photoshot before letting it go to fight another day.

Talk about variety! Lynn Crooks has about 6 different species on the transom after a good day on the water fishing north of La Paz.

Just incredible colors in this photo to go along with Gaby Donnell’s pretty smile. Gaby is from Oregon and took the colorful bull dorado just outside of Las Arenas.

Our buddy, Roger “Fluffy” McCracken battled this feisty jack crevalle south of Espirito Santo Island. These are tough fighters!

Not normally something we recommend or target, but we DO occasionally hook sharks. It usually never lasts long before the shark busts the line nor do we recommend putting any shark in the boat. But, Jeff Slater is one of our long-time anglers and very very experienced and fought this hammerhead estimated at 300 pounds. Actually very good eating and he donated much of the meat as well.

This is frameable! Hard to get a better photo or smile than Cortez Sanchez with his bull dorado on the beach at Muertos.

Good way to greet a sunrise! Captain Rogelio and our first-timer Nick Arandia started the morning with a fine catch-and-release roosterfish near La Paz.

When it’s your first time fishing and your first fish, it’s a great moment. Imelda Natividad got herself a fat triggerfish for ceviche with Captain Alfredo.

There is no doubt that this has been an incredibly crazy year for weather as well as fishing! It seemed that winter took forever to leave and summer to take hold and given the types of fish we’re catching, summer is still reluctant even though we’re now half into August.

The week started somewhat sluggish and got better as the week progressed. Lots of cloudy days (similar to San Diego grey skies of summer) kept things cooler which was appreciated by many of the anglers. We even had about a 30 minute downpour one afternoon like a mini tropical hurricane that caused a lot of flooding and winds then quickly blew out.

Here it comes! Good thing everyone is off the water already.

Early in the week, we had the usual smattering of dorado mostly in the 10-20 pound class. But we continued to show up with unusual cold-water fish like pargo liso (mullet snapper), giant dog-tooth snapper, cabrilla, pompano, amberjack, jack crevalle and even sierra.

Wish we could see his photo, but Captain Moncho give Bernie Crooks (I think that’s Bernie in there!) a hand with his jack crevalle which was released right there off the beach.

But, then the kicker showed up late in the week. Not only did 20-100 pound tuna show up (most fish lost after long battles on light tackle) but we started getting YELLOWTAIL!

None of us can ever remember yellowtail so late in the season. In my 25 years here we have never seen yellowtail in August. Mostly by May, these cold-water fish are long gone!

Never ever ever ever seen yellowtail caught in August. It’s like getting a snowstorm in the summer. It just doesn’t happen!

I’ve given up telling folks what they’re gonna catch these days! Oh, and the fish got bigger as the week went on.

CRAZY VARIETY FOR 2nd STRAIGHT WEEK!

The Big Picture and the Rest of the Story…

Micah Pettit from Utah came down with his dad for his first trip with us although dad fishes with us several times a year. Micah stuck it to this tough yellowtail just outside Bahia Muertos his first day along with snapper, cabrilla and sierra.

Our amigo, Rod Brown from Alaska has been coming to fish with us for over a dozen years and usually during the spring . Along with nice yellowtail, he put this trophy barred pargo in the box fishing around Espirito Santo Island north of La Paz over the rocks.

From Minnesota, Jeff Brown is a pretty good fisherman on our La Paz waters and always does well as he poses with one of his nice yellowtail.

This type of rack of fish is not unusual this time of year when we can end up with alot of variety. Here you see yellowtail, yellow snapper, sierra, cabrilla and barred pargo.

Our popular Captain Joel has reason to smile after putting the gaff to Jeff’s trophy barred pargo. That’s Espirito Santo Island in the background.

Coleman Wadsworth shows off his catch including this yellowtail plus some great eating variety on the boar behind him including rockfish like snapper, cabrilla and pargo.

Incredible variety this week as we hit a 2^nd good week of action. It’s what we call “transitional” time although it usually doesn’t hit until about next month. However, it’s the time of the fishing season when it’s not winter anymore and not summer quite yet in the water.

Consequently, you still have the ability to catch cold-water species like cabrilla, pargo, sierra, yellowtail, amberjack, snapper and more as they still linger. However, warm water species like dorado, tuna, wahoo, billfish, larger roosterfish are no starting to move in as well as surface waters warm.

Add in bonito, jack crevalle, skipjack and other year-round species and you get a lot of variety right now and that’s the kind of week we just had with great action on a number of different kinds of fish.

You may not get a lot of any one species, but you could finish a day with 6, 8, 10 or more different species in the box at the end of the day. The boat right next to you have have another 3 or 4 different species. The next day you get completely different species. It makes for some fun fishing.

Still not a lot of anglers out on the water, but the ones we did have out took yellowtail, barred pargo, dog-tooth snapper, sierra, amberjack, bonito, jack crevalle, roosterfish (released), yellow snapper, cabrilla as well as tuna (lost) and wahoo (lost). Signs of striped marlin were also seen.

Biggest problem is that many of the fish are in shallow water right now or over structure so lots of big fish are getting lost in the rocks but they’re willng to bite.

Here’s what one of our anglers had to say:

“Another great day of fishing. We caught almost 70 mackerel for bait this morning. For the third day in a row we ran out of bait by 1 o’clock because of just too many hook-ups! . Today’s catch included 7 yellowtail, 5 nice sized cabrilla, one large barred pargo, and one sierra. The fish were tough on our equipment. The first thing they do is run for he rocks. We lost more than we boated…We also snapped one of the heavy rods on a hook set. This has never happened before!”

Despite the great fishing this week, don’t say good-bye just yet to those windy days of winter…Sunday was pretty rough and blustery again. Will keep an eye out for you. Stay tuned.

BAHIA MAGDALENA FISHING

We were able to send out our first anglers of the season over to the Pacific side to light-tackle fish the mangroves in the shallows of Bahia Magdalena and they had a spectacular time. Using live bait, they had 50-60 fish days catching, releasing and donating much of their catch and also losing many fish in the tangles of roots and underwater structure.

Catches included: snook, cabrilla, spotted-bay bass, halibut, snapper, pargo, corvina, croaker, and many more!

That’s ALOT of variety and light tackle action after just one day fishing the mangrove shallows in Bahia Magdalena not including all the other fish lost and donated.

Called “lenguado” (tonguefish) in Spanish, Jorge Romero has himself a good little halibut that ate a live sardine.

You can see the tangle of mangrove roots behind Jeff Brown and how close to shore we fish in the shallows of Mag Bay, but check out the kind of fish lurking in the roots like this pargo.

IS WINTER FINALLY FINISHED WITH US?

Fishing brother Rod Brown from Alaska and Jeff Brown from Minnesota get together once a year in La Paz to fish with us and scored limits of yellowtail and other species fishing north of La Paz near Espirito Santo Island.

Gary Wagner, owner of Rancho Costa, rocked this big thick yellowtail on the north end of Cerralvo island on the east side with a live mackerel.

That’s a trophy! Big tasty cabrilla headed no doubt for the dinner table caught by Miles Wagner from Colorado Springs CO.

Our own Captain Joel has a big smile posing with Jeff Brown and some of the limits of yellowtail they caught and lost many others in the rocks.

Yes! Roosterfish are starting to show up! Right there in Muertos Bay, Miles was working live sardines on light tackle and had a blast catching and releasing these smaller early-season roosters. The big boys should be close behind!

Nothing better than light tackle fishing and big fish. Check out this pretty cabrilla that Russ Whitmarsh nailed on a bass rod just close to the rocks where these guys hang out. Nice catch!

What a difference a week or two makes!

We’ve gone from some of the harshest and toughest winter fishing in a long time several weeks ago to some of the nicest conditions and fishing so far this season. Still not completely up-to-speed and I’d be crazy to say we’re completely done with winter and the pesky winds, but this past week was sure a nice time to be on the water.

With the first true week of springtime and temperatures in the high 80’s to low 90’s. the winds weren’t completely done with us and there were some episodes for several days, but overall, Mother Nature was good to our fishermen for once.

With some perfect candy-sized mackerel for baits for both our Tailhunter La Paz and Las Arenas fleet, the big story were the yellowtail. They popped up in several places including the upper east-side of Cerralvo Island; south point of Cerralvo and Punta Perrico. We also had quite a bite going around the high spots around Espirito Santo Island.

Most of the fish weren’t huge, but that’s because so many of the fish were hovering and feeding in shallow waters close to the rocks, shore or over structure. Lots of the bigger 30-40 pound mossbacks threw hooks or broke lines in the rocks plus quite a few missed bites! But the ones that were landed were respectable powerful 20-25 pound fish.

I”ll let our amigo Rod Brown tell it:

“We had one of our best La Paz fishing days ever today. The yellowtail started biting as soon as we started fishing in the morning and were still biting when we quit a little before 1:00 – ran out of mackerel. We landed 10 medium to large yellowtail, missed a lot of good strikes, and lost some in the rocks. They are STRONG fish and bent 0ur heavy poles in a 90 degree arc and made several powerful runs each. Good thing we ran out of bait. We were buggered and Joel had to get home to watch his daughters play football. Some largish swells, but a beautiful day.”

Not to be completely outdone, we also had some incredible cabrilla fishing tight inside to the cliffs and rocks with some trophy-sized fish being landed on bait, jigs and slow-trolled Rapalas and YoZuris as well as pargo and assorted rockfish.

Our amigo, Rod Brown again:

“Another great fishing day. The yellowtail weren’t biting at first, but we landed 7 large barred pargo and 4 large cabrilla. They immediately dive for the rocks and are strong, so we lost a lot of them – and a lot of fishing tackle. Around 11 the yellowtail started biting and we landed 3 nice ones. By noon we had used all our mackerel (62 of them) and spent an hour fishing with spinning gear and sardines for smaller yellow pargo along the shore. Caught several of them.”

We also saw action on lots of bonito on light tackle, jack crevalle and even some early season roosterfish! All-in-all some solid biters and some of the best variety of the young season!

Well, we finally came to the end of another awesome road trip. Our 25th year going from one show to the other. This year 12 states and 11 incredible shows meeting and talking to so many awesome folks and old friends!

The Big Picture and the Rest of the Story…

Skip Coomber from San Diego has a handful of hefty yellowtail. He and his family landed 5 between 20-30 pounds and busted off 3. He said one spooled him on 40 pound test. The fish were taking live bait off Cerralvo Island.

On the backside of Cerralvo Island where Captain Victor found calm waters, Erika and Carolyn landed several nice yellowtail like these in the shallow waters.

He’s just called “Joel the Bald Guy” by his amigos, but he gets the last grin with ah thick yellowtail and a handful of great eating . These fish were crashing on the surface over the rocky areas.

Amigo Bob Sayre, from Chicago, was just out in front of the hotels not far from shore when he ran into some pretty fun dorado taking 5 on dead bait and losing 2. Not like the fish to be here so early in the year…nor right there in the bay!

You can see how close to the shore they are. Captain Victor and a happy Caroline Coomber and another yellowtail!

It’s nice to have something substantive to tell you this time after last week’s report! Even photos and better video!

We definitely had a better week of fishing which happened to co-incide with better weather finally as spring arrived with some surprising catches.

Maybe the fish woke up for spring!

Early in the week, waters really settled down nicely and some nice quality yellowtail came to chew and seemed to pop up in several places. These 20-30 pound forkies were hitting live bait, jigs and dead bait on the back side of Cerralvo Island, just outside of Bahia Muertos (Suenos); Punta Perrico; as well as Espirito Santo Island. Quite a few fish, including bigger ones were lost in the rocks insofar as many of these fish were biting in shallow water either right off the rocks or over shallow structure and reefs. The same areas produced jack crevalle, small roosters, bonito, pargo and cabrilla. A wahoo was lost as well!

The surprising catches were right in the Bay of La Paz. Pretty much right out in front of the hotels and Malecon waterfront. Fun, 10-15 pound schools of dorado showed up literally just a few hundred yards out front in shallow water. It might have something to do with the patches of floating sargasso weed that moved in which we usually don’t see until about May or so when waters warm. The sargasso draws baitfish which hide in the weeds as well as flying fish that lay eggs in the floating paddies. This draws the dorado in searching for food. A good sign of an early season! Fingers crossed.

It’s been a brutal winter up north as well as in Baja and I have a feeling that winter isn’t quite done with us just yet!

Our 2019 Show Tour comes to an end! After almost 4 months on the road driving to the most awesome fishing/ hunting expos in the west and hauling our booth back and forth across the country through one of the most crazy winters ever, we come to our last show…and it’s a good one!

But first a big shout out to all the amigos and Tailhunter Tribe members who came to see us and welcomed us and extended so much hospitality and smiles as we traveled to these cities and all the cities in between:

Denver show to Sacramento…then to Puyallup (Seattle)…then to Portland…and Salt Lake City…then Boise…after which we hit the Fred Hall Show in Long Beach…then Bakersfield and back to Salt Lake City again. Then just finishing up a great show in Scottsdale AZ.

Back and forth and up and down, what a fantastic country we have and are blessed to visit every year! Thank you all and for those of you who booked with us, we’ll do our best to have the fish and sunshine waiting for you!

Now, we head to the beaches of San Diego for the Fred Hall Fishing and Boating Show at the Del Mar Fairgrounds just north of the city. This is a fun show and all our friends are there and it’s a big party with lots to see and do for the whole family about fishing, hunting, camping, boating, and so much more.

The Big Picture and the Rest of the Story…

Early in the week hogs like Carl Lange’s hefty yellowtail were hanging in the shallow waters willing to take the baits, but as the week went on the fish got harder to find.

From Paso Robles, Joel Zarmati was fishing live bait over shallow rocks on the lee side of Cerralvo Island where the waters were calmer and sheltered from the winds when he hooked and landed this big-headed yellowtail.

A little early in the season for warm-water dorado, but nonetheless, Al Hutchinson brought this one back to the beach for the dinner table.

Tasty huachinango/ dog-tooth snapper right there in Bahia Muertos by our amiga, Donna Thompson. These guys can grow well over 50 or 60 pounds.

It was a hit-or-miss kind of fishing week. The windsurfers and kite boarders had fun with the continuing winds, but even on the few days that were fishable, the few anglers out found it less than stellar although some fish were caught. There are some quality fish around, that seem like they’re just waiting to bust loose and as winter pulls away, it’s like we two steps forward then 1 ½ steps back each week.

It just doesn’t pay to get too excited. Last week, I was optimistic that maybe we were finally getting something going with some hog yellowtail, dorado, wahoo and even a tuna hookup and a marlin hook-up! These are all species we generally don’t see this early in the year. Things seemed like they were picking up!

Then, Mother Nature kinda slapped us back in place. The yellowtail bite near Punta Perico and over at Cerralvo Island diminished significantly. Bait got a little harder to find…again! And overall, we were left with a smattering of dorado; some snapper; a cabrilla or two (although a few were trophy-sized) and lots of bonito. Oh, and one marlin just to keep us excited. Overall just kind of a ho-hum week, even for this time of the year.

The coming week looks promising. Early, there’s some strong winds and there’s a possibility of rain, but then they really drop back quite a bit for the majority of the week. That will hopefully kick the fish up again.

Just wrapping up a spectacular over-the-top show at the Fred Hall Fishing Show in Long Beach CA at the Convention Center. The largest fishing and boating show in the world and over 1000 vendors from all over the world packed in the crowds and Jill and I talked non-stop for 5 full days.

We had a blast! Thanks to everyone who stopped by and said hi and everyone who set up trips to see us this year in La Paz. It was a fantastic party!

By the time you’re reading this, we’re in our Tailhunter-Mobile and zooming back to Utah for the International Sportsmans Show at the Expo Center in Sandy, Utah…just south of Salt Lake City. BETTER WEATHER – BETTER FISHING…FINALLY!

THE BIG PICTURE and the REST of the STORY….

Carl Lange took down our first wahoo of the season just outside of Bahia Muertos! Crazy March catch!

OH man…this is a hog yellowtail! Roger Thompson with Captain Hugo knocked this guy out at the north end of Cerralvo Island slow trolling sardines in about 12′ of water! They got 5, but lost others they couldn’t stop.

Our Bakersfield amigo, Ken Gragg, loves to fish this time of year, even in the crazy weather and it paid off with a big-headed yellowtail later in the week.

The cabrilla queen herself, Donna Thompson from La Ventana has stuck so many of these big cabrilla over the years and she did it again at Cerralvo Island in shallow water.

You can tell it’s a bit cold and nippy as well as choppy, but Carl Lange probably doesn’t feel a thing except big smiles over another nice yellowtail.

We’ve got the whalesharks in the by of La Paz again. Had about a dozen this week and later in the week when winds calmed down, we were able to put some folks in the water to go swimming with them in the shallows.

It’s an incredible experience snorkeling with our La Paz whalesharks in the bay. The “babies” are only about 15 feet long or so.

The week started pretty blustery with white caps even in the normally calm La Paz Bay. Actually, for this time of the year, that’s not unusual. Fortunately, we didn’t have anyone out fishing, but we probably could not have gone out anyway.

However, as the week went on, winds diminished somewhat, at least enough to get out although there was still some chop and it was good to have a jacket or sweatshirt on.

Fishing out’ve Bahia de los Muertos, we hit quite a mix of fish, especially for so early in the year with warm water species mixing with the normal cold water species. Big cabrilla, jack crevalle and both white bonito and skipjack kept the rods bent as well as smaller snapper and pargo. However, we also got some legit yellowtail over structure and topped it with some flurries of dorado and even wahoo.

Live bait is still hard to come by with all the rough water, but we’re dragging lures and using dead bait pretty effectively and the fishing is not too far off the beach.

It was also calm enough to get out to swim with the whalesharks in La Paz Bay. We had as many as a dozen in the shallow waters, but on the choppy days it’s hard to see them let alone swim with them.

Just wrapping it up in Boise, Idaho from the Idaho Sportsman’s Show and just a quick shout-out to all the Idaho amigos who came to visit us and put out a red-carpet welcome! Man…what a show! Best Idaho show we’ve had in more than a decade! Thank you all and we’ll see you in La Paz!

It’s the grand-daddy…Fred Hall Fishing Show at the Long Beach Convention Center. This is the oldest and largest fishing show in the entire U.S. and runs from Wednesday to Sunday (March. 6-10). If you’re gonna be in Long Beach Tuesday night, after we set up our booth at the Long Beach Convention Center, we traditionally head over to Joe Jost’s Bar and have some beers under the pretense of it being my birthday. It’s my 62nd and we hope to be there about 6:30. Totally informal.

Joe Josts has been there since 1924! All the serve is beer…and sausage sandwiches…and pickled eggs…and liverwurst sandwiches…and egg salad sandwiches and pretzels and peanuts! It’s like stepping back in time as I mark my time! It’s cheap and it’s fun! Just my style!

Not many anglers around these days which is off-season. Early in the week we it was pretty chilly, cold and windy. Conditions got a little better as the week went on. Bait is an issue because of the rough water so our captains relied on slow trolling dead bait and lures inshore where it was more protected. Catches included bonito, jack crevalle, snapper, cabrilla and barred pargo.

WHALE WATCHING SEASON IN FULL SWING

Although it’s not prime time fishing right now, from late January until March, it’s our whale-watching season and it’s in full swing and we’re running daily and overnight trips to Bahia Magdalena every week to spend time with the whales. Great family trip and opportunity to spend some incredible close-up action and interaction with these fantastic animals in the calm bay waters. Coming to Portland This Week!

Our Tailhunter 2019 tour swings us into the big Pacific Northwest Sportsmans Show this week at the Portland Expo Center. This is probably the largest show in the Pacific Northwest and one of the largest in the Western U.S. with almost 1000 vendors from all over the world including Mexico, the U.S., S. Africa, Alaska, New Zealand, S. America and more! If you’re into fishing, hunting, camping, boating and just the outdoors in general, there’s something for the whole family whether you’re looking for some great gear; booking a potential trip; or want to test stuff or talk and learn from experts.

Something a little different this week. Sorry the video is a little ragged this week. We were in our booth at the Puyallup Fairgrounds and crowds were already starting to come down the aisle and watching some goofy guy (me!) talking out loud to his laptop! So I didn’t have much time!

Also, no real fishing to report so I answered some letters in the video about fishing in La Paz!

The Big Picture and the Rest of the Story…

Honestly not much to say about fishing this week. I guess I could make something up, but that’s now how we roll.

This is winter and off-season and not many folks out fishing from November to April. Mostly, it’s because of the winds and waves that can be very erratic. So, that’s what happened this week.

We did have a few folks set to fish early in the week, but it was pretty rough. So, as much as they wanted to go, I advised they just cancel. Stay at the hotel. Hang out at the pool. Go to town of lunch. Sleep in. Take a siesta.

Fishing is supposed to be fun, right? Not an excercise in staying dry and trying to stay in the boat. Many of the folks we have this time of year aren’t hard-core anglers. For some it’s their first time really fishing in the ocean so I don’t want them to have a bad time. As much as we love the business, especially this time of year, it was better to just advise folks not to come out.

Not much bait around but plugs and lures are working.

However, when the wind isn’t blowing, there’s some dorado out there. Pargo and cabrilla and snapper are still around the reefs and rocks.

Sierra, bonito and jack crevalle near the drop offs. This coming week, the winds die down about mid-week so hopefully, I”ll have a better report for you!

Well, we just finished our 3rd show of the season. We’re wrapping things up here in the Seattle area and packing to head to our next show at the Portland Expo Center in Portland, Oregon Sept. 6-10. We’ve had some fantastic shows so far! We’ve been in Denver, Sacramento and then this past week in Seattle.
