Quite a surprise, but wahoo are still on the chew! Happy amigo, Fernando Sucre, from the San Francisco Bay area, was able to get in one day of fishing and scored this tasty wahoo near Cerralvo Island. The presence of wahoo has been a great treat so late in the season.

Recently retired amigo, Tim Zimmer, has been making the most of his free time fishing his brains out all over the country. He and his wife always make a point of visiting us in December and always do well. We had a great week of marlin fishing with most of them getting released. Check out Captain Jorge and Tim’s nice billfish.

Ken Gragg is another of our frequent amigos. This is his 3rd trip this year, and in 2 days fishing this week with Captain Gerardo scored 4 wahoo! This one seems to be missing it’s nose, but it’s a big fish. Captain Gerardo is NFL lineman-sized guy!

Check out the roosterfish! In December!!! What’s up with that? Steve Medley got in two days of fishing and scored this trophy roosterfish just off the beach to take a great photo and release the fish to fight again! It’s been the best roosterfish season in years!

Another bucket list fish! Prof. Mark Marcus came to visit us from Washington also popped a big rooster this week. He’s kinda struggling with the hot fish to take the photo, but it’s a sweet fish and was released after the photo! He also got a wahoo as well! See the photo below! Some great fishing!

DOUBLE ‘HOO! Professor Llew Williams from Florida and Professor Mark Marcus from Washington tag teamed for this double billing of wahoo off Cerralvo Island this past week. They took chunks back to our Tailhunter Restaurant for some great eats! Nicely done!

Chris and Damon Lewis are brothers who met up in La Paz for some fishing. Chris is from Mexico City and Damon lives in Redwood City near San Francisco. Yes! There’s still dorado in our waters. Normally, warm water fish, they’re still lingering in surprising numbers!

CRAZY MARLIN AND WAHOO LIGHT IT UP!

La Paz -Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Dec. 1-8, 2014

It has truly been a surprising end of the season here in La Paz. Mainly because the season hasn’t ended!

Here it is almost Christmas. Yes, it’s getting cooler. Yes, it’s getting windier and choppier. We’re supposed to be fishing inshore right now for cabrilla, pargo, bonito, and sierra.

Instead, we’ve still got blue water pelagic species still biting. And it’s not just one or two. I mean, crazily, the fish or on a serious chew!

We had several days this week when almost every single one of our pangas hooked at least one or two striped marlin between 90 and 120 pounds. We’ve had several days where every panga hooked 1-3 wahoo each between 15 and 40 pounds. We’ve still got trophy rooster fish up on the beach up to 50 pounds. Plus, there’s schools of 10-20 pound dorado out there as well!

This is more like the kind of fishing report I’d be giving in the summer or fall. Not in December. Not just a few weeks before Christmas! It’s been a wacky year, but I would never have expected this. Some days, it’s been like a buffet line. Pick and choose what kind of fish you want to fish for! I have no idea what the inshore rock fishing is like because no one is fishing for the inshore species! Maybe there are pargo and cabrilla and sierra to be caught, but those species have to be feeling ignored because just a few further yards offshore, there’s dorado and marlin and wahoo ready to bite!

It’s been a great late season treat. No complaints!

It was one of those nice tranquil holiday weeks. Not a whole lot of fishermen on the water, but a nice time to be in the area with some great weather and, not bad fishing. Here’s the morning view of Bahia de Los Muertos as we launch to go fishing for our Tailhunter Las Arenas Fleet.

They were a little tough to find early in the week, but the dorado bite got better as the week went on with most fish about 10-15 pounds like this decent bull held by our Captain Armando on the beach at Bahia de Los Muertos.

Yes! It’s hard to believe, but there are still good number of striped marlin and sailfish in the area to punctuate what has been a very good year for billfish. Most of the billfish have been running about 100-130 pounds and thankfully are getting released. Most of the catches have also been unintentionally caught when guys are fishing for other species and the line gets picked up by a billfish! A nice treat and very unexpected this late in the season!

Captain Archangel hoists up another roosterfish for the camera before letting it go. Another species we don’t often see this late in the season. But, we’re finding them in the shallow waters inshore near the lighthouse. All of them are getting released.

WEEK STARTS SLOW ENDS ON UPSWING

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Nov. 24 to Dec. 1, 2013

Winds and waters got a little cooler this past week and we even had little flurries of rain that threatened. We still got some fish, but overall, being a holiday weekend there just weren’t that many anglers in town. The week started rather slowly and I figured that the season changes finally caught up with us. Fishing was slow. Just a few fish here and there.

But that’s what I had been expecting for about this time of year as the season changes to cooler conditions. Basically, that means fewer blue water fish like dorado and billfish and more inshore species like cabrilla, pargo, jack crevalle and sierra. So, after a few so-so fishing days early in the week, I was about ready to call it and say the warm-water species are gone.

But, then as the week went on, fishing got better. We started hitting more dorado schools. We had a few biters from billfish (sailfish and marlin) and even got a few nice-sized rooster fish! The dorado do seem a bit more scattered, but it’s great that they are still around. Likewise, the roosters are where you’d expect them…around the Las Arenas lighthouse and off Punta Perrico, but the fact that they are even here this late in the season is kinda cool! The marlin? Who knows! It seems that every day at least one of our pangas is getting hooked up and more often-than-not, several hookups a day. I think the waters are still warm enough to hold them in the area, plus there are still some big schools or bonito in the area which is perfect food for the billfish.

So, as of my writing, there’s still some pelagic species running around. Again, I’m not sure how long this will last, but we’ll enjoy it as long as we get it. The forecast for the coming week calls for some increasing winds and even a slight chance of rain so we’ll have to keep an eye out.

Another good week for billfish surprisingly for so late in the season. Raul Chollet with Captain Armando got his first marlin. We got quite a few billfish and almost all of them were released. This one was taken just off Punta Perico.

From Wyoming, Rick and Amy Kasper always do well fishing with us. They got into a nice school of dorado just off Las Arenas. Dorado are getting more scarce as the waters cool, but so far, we’re still finding roaming schools.

Benny Salgado is often seen playing lead guitar with the Tailhunter Restaurant house band on Friday nights. He went fishing with us for the first time ever on the water and first time fishing. His first fish ever…a striped marlin!

Raul Chollet has another dorado for the panga. Most of the dorado this week were the 8-20 pound class fish, but they’re hungry and voracious!

Even though it’s almost December, there’s still roosterfish in the water! Captain Jorge with Amy Kasper just inside Bahia de Los Muertos caught and released this roosterfish.

Many thanks to our long-time amigo, Bill Boyce (orange shirt) who brought his great camera crew down this week to fish with us and film for his popular TV show “IGFA Saltwater Adventures.” They got some great footage and had some fun with our folks!

BLUE WATER SPECIES STILL HOLDING!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Nov 17-24, 2013

It wasn’t a spectacular week of fishing, but given the time of the year, it wasn’t a bad week either and there were some very good catches. It’s just that seasons are changing and water temperatures are dropping taking with it more and more of the warm water species.

But, still, we had OK numbers of dorado. Limits were harder to come by, but everyone still got a few dorado between 8 and 20 pounds. There were also some decent surprising roosters around near the Las Arenas lighthouse with most fish between 10 an 30 pounds. We also still have decent numbers of billfish around as well. Every day we got at least 1 or more hook-ups on sailfish or marlin with most fish either breaking off or getting released. All of these species are somewhat unusual to still be biting this late in the season so these catches are treats. More likely, we should be fishing for more inshore species like cabrilla, sierra, jack crevalle and pargo.

I imagine, as the waters continue to cool and winds get stronger, we’ll be fishing more and more for these inshore species.

One really nice spark this week were the appearance of wahoo. Mid-week, we got into a nice jag with several of our boats hooking up to the speedsters and a few getting boats. All of these were on the south side of Cerralvo Island and we had not taken any wahoo in about 2 week so this was a nice surprise to get into these trophies!

Our biggest day of the week happened to be when TV show host and IGFA Rep, Bill Boyce brought his film crew down to shoot for his TV show “IGFA Saltwater Adventures.” I was pretty nervous. Fishing had not been real great. It was also a full moon and windy plus being “off-season” wasn’t the best time to be fishing!

Still, Bill and his crew went out with our Tailhunter Las Arenas fleet and brought the cameras. Between our 3 pangas out, we got some great footage! 6 marlin caught and released. Some great action on dorado plus some rooster fish caught in Muertos Bay!

Shandi Weeks from Paso Robles CA went at it for an entire week trying to get a big fish. On her 4th day, she finally nailed it with a huge 50-pound class bull dorado…the largest in weeks…that was longer than she is tall! Shandi was fishing with live bait with our Tailhunter La Paz fleet. During the battle, the fish snapped her fishing rod when it got close to the panga and sped off on another blazing run. She still got the fish!

Our good amigo, Scott McKenzie, from Seattle WA fishes with us several times a year over many years and had never put a trophy roosterfish in the boat until this week…at a time when when we normally don’t see many roosters! Scott caught this big one off Las Arenas and released the fish after the photo op!

Bill Lee is from the San Francisco Bay area and shows off some great colors on this bull dorado taken fishing off Las Arenas.

First timer, Michele Edwards, from Loma Rica CA celebrated her 25th anniversary by fishing an entire week with us and did some great action with dorado like this one as well as several billfish.

Folks come to fish with us for years and never get a shot at one of our famous roosterfish! Mi primo and his wife, Tim and Taylor Torres, were fishing with us this past week for the first time and got 2 nice roosters that they caught and released. Nearby, you can see the cliffs of Punta Perrico near Las Arenas.

Another of our great gals who came to fish with us this week, Michele Conklin, from Washington State was celebrating her retirement and fished with Captain Jorge near Las Arenas and shows off the great colors on a “tiger” bull dorado caught just off the beach.

Another of our amigas from Washington in the house! Dan Hicks, her husband, fished the day before and Lisa didn’t have a chance, so Dan told her he’d watch their little boy Sammy back and the hotel so she could go fishing alone! She did well with dorado like this one! Bravo to both of them on the tag-team fishing!

Big smile from Dave Conklin who put this fresh one in the boat fishing with Captain Jorge just outside of Bahia de Los Muertos. Dave’s from Washington state and was on his first trip with us.

Cradling a big trophy roosterfish, Jan Jacobs, took this big boy just off Punta Perrico and quickly released it. Great fish! We caught several of these big ones this week with pretty much all of them being released.

Parting shot…with Jeff Brown from Oregon…and a giant squid with Captain Jorge. After about 6 weeks of having the giant squid around for bait and for eating…it looks like the squid are finally gone. It was great to have them and great fun.

SEASON IS CHANGING BUT DORADO STILL LEADING THE CHARGE WITH ROOSTERFISH AND MARLIN!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Oct. 20-27, 2013

A great solid sunny week of fishing…just the way it’s supposed to be!

Every day…pretty much every panga got into fish with a nice variety of species with dorado leading the way. Both our Tailhunter La Paz and Tailhunter Las Arenas fleet got into nice jags of the mahi mahi. If I had to say, there were MORE fish with our Las Arenas fleet, and fewer but LARGER fish with our La Paz fleet.

As well, both sides were sprinkled daily with billfish hookups with marlin and sails hooked daily and most of them getting released and many of our anglers getting their first billfish. It’s quite a treat, especially when a first timer who has never fished gets their first billfish..sometimes their first fish ever is a sailfish or marlin! It happened several times this week! Folks who may have only caught a trout or never even had a rod in their hand suddenly have a 150 pound freight train at the end of their lines getting towed around in a panga!

Speaking about first timers as well…we have rooster fish biting! I don’t know what’s up with that because normally, this isn’t rooster fish time, but the last two weeks, we’ve had 150-50 pound just off the beaches slamming the rods. Since no one has been fishing for them for awhile, it’s like these fish feel like they’ve been ignored. They’re not there every day, but on the days they roll up on the beach, there are double and triple hookups! Again, a big thrill for alot of our clients to get this much sought-after exotic fish.

I can tell the the fishing is changing. Cooler winds from the north are definitely increasing. It’s a pretty time to be here and the weather is cooler by the week. Some days us locals, and even my captains, are all wearing sweatshirts and hoodies! (Of course, the tourists in shorts and flip-flops think we’re crazy since it’s still 85 degrees outside!). But the nights are definitely cooler and we’re seeing more and more cooler water fish like sierra, cabrilla and pargo in the counts.

Mike Liberski from Washington is fishing with us this whole week. One thing on his bucket list was a marlin. It didn’t take long. His first day out with Captain Pancho, he scored this blue marlin estimated at 160-180 pounds. Good one Mike…he got it up for a quick photo and released the fish to swim away strongly! Bravo! Quite a few billfish in the area the last few weeks! Check out the flat waters. Only about a mile outside of Bahia de Los Muertos!

I think I will frame this photo taken underwater of a nice bull dorado by amigo, Gary Wagner who owns the famous Giggling Marlin Bar in Cabo San Lucas and has his place in Bahia de Los Muertos as well.

Kathy and Craig Sanford dorado tags 10-13

Celebrating their 29th anniversary, Craig and Kathy Sanford came up for the week to visit us and spent several days on the water tangling with some great dorado like these two bulls taken north of La Paz. Craig and Kathy are from the Phoenix AZ area and are standing on the beach at Balandra.

We have been trying for years to get John Hughes and his dad Carl down to visit us from their great operation at Aurora Fishing Charters in Seward, Alaska! They finally made it down and got into our great dorado bite but Carl also got his first marlin and John got his first roosterfish with Captain Armando and our Tailhunter Las Arenas fleet. It was a great week for billfish with lots of hookups and fish either lost and most released. Eric Johnson from Washington got his first billfish with Captain Adolfo driving the boat and he battled this one with Cerralvo Island in sight. Fishing 3 days, they released most of their fish but were not able to release this one and donated much of the meat.

“Uncle Bobby” Dominguez from Hacienda Heights CA really wanted his photo in this week’s fishing report. Well…you made it Bob! He shows off a really nice trophy barred pargo he pulled off the reef while fishing from Bahia de Los Muertos. Nice work, Bob!

All the way from Kodiak Island, Alaska, Mike Anderson came down for a quick two-day run with us and got into some nice dorado like this one while fishing with our La Paz fleet.

Can’t beat the colors of a dorado! Jeremy Lord just put this one in the boat off Espirito Santo Island. Jeremy is from the Sacramento CA area and was on his first visit with us at Tailhunter in La Paz.

John Hughes took this photo of a “small” 25-foot whaleshark that came up and swam with their panga for awhile. It’s that time of the year when whalesharks visit our waters and John got this great shot, but kicked himself for not jumping in the water to swim with the big fish. The gentle animals are true sharks, but eat plankton and small krill and grow up to 50 feet and are a big attraction in La Paz for scuba divers and snorkelers.

DORADO STILL BENDING RODS BUT POSSIBLE STORM COMING THIS WEEK!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Oct 6-13, 2013

As I write this, we’re watching our computers screens wondering if the storm cell to the south of us is going to head our way and turn into a tropical storm and bring with it, some winds and rain our way. We’ve dodged quite a few bullets this year and our last few storms have veered away at the 11th hour. We just have to wait and see. I’m not worried so much about a little rain or some thunder showers. Those come and go or you can alway drive away or around cloudbursts. Fishing is rarely affected.

However, wind is all encompassing and can make for chop as well as turn-over-the-water. Plus, it can cool waters and, if they are northern winds make it pretty much too uncomfortable to be fishing. So, we’ll just have to wait and see. We’ve got alot of fishermen here this week and we surely hate to disappoint!

Anyway…

It’s been a good week of fishing. The full-turbo dorado bite we’ve had for two weeks died a bit, but everyone was still getting dorado. For numbers, our Las Arenas fleet plugged easy limits of fish between 8 and 20 pounds. For larger quality fish, our La Paz fleet got fewer fish but the fish were larger between 15 and 30 pounds. Bottom line…if you wanted dorado, they were there every day for the taking. Our light tackle and flyfishermen especially had a good time with this grade of fish.

However, there were some surprising other species as well.

There’s giant squid in the water that we’re catching for bait but those are also drawing marlin and sailfish into the area and we’re hooking a nice number of billfish…and releasing most…but they’re alot of fun. Our biggest of the week might be 180-pound-blue that was released. These fish are also feeding on the smaller dorado and bonito as well.

But, in addition to the billfish, we hit some jags of rooster fish as well. These were fish in the 15-40 pound class and were in the Las Arenas area near the lighthouse and in Bahia de los Muertos. Normally, it’s pretty late in the year to be encountering roosters, but a great catch for many of our anglers who weren’t expecting the exotic fish! All roosters were released.

Additionally, pargo and cabrilla showed up on the counts leading me to believe that waters are starting to cool. For sure, we’re getting more and more north winds indicative of coming winter conditions. Normally, we don’t see this happening until November but looks like we’re in the transition period.

Compared to other years, this has been a banner wahoo season! Kelly SooHoo, from Pasadena CA was on her first fishing trip…on her first trip to Mexico…and first time on the ocean…and she bags a prized wahoo! She was fishing with Captain Armando off Cerralvo Island.

Good as it gets! Double trophys fish for Jim and Dan Bovee from San Diego who came back to the beach at Bahia de Los Muertos with a big dog-tooth snapper and hefty bull dorado!

Our Washington amigo, Ed Vander Veer, has fished with us many times and this was his 2nd trip of 2013. But, he had never caught a wahoo. This week he was in the thick of a dorado bite fishing with Captain Chito out’ve our Tailhunter La Paz fleet when the rod goes off. He thought it might be a dorado at first, but then a tuna. As the fish got close to the boat…SURPRISE…a wahoo…on bait and with no wire! Meant to happen! Great catch!

With the rains just about to hit in the background, Mike McArthur, from Los Angeles, still put a limit of dorado in the panga in short order and made it back in time! Check out the colors on this fresh one!

Big smiles for Mary Heilman Vander Veer who always does well with her favorite La Paz Captain Pancho and show off a nice bull dorado she battled on light tackle!

Our kinda family! Scott McKenzie and sisters Jana and Loren visit us yearly and the gals fish hardcore and are as competitive as Scott when it comes to fishing. They fished 5 straight days and pose here with some of their dorado from one day with our Tailhunter La Paz fleet.

ANOTHER STORM PASSES THRU BUT FISH DON’T MIND GETTING WET! BITE ON!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Sept. 1-8, 2013

We got another surprise storm this week with Tropical Storm Lorena suddenly rearing up and dropping some wind and rain on us. This is the 3rd week that we’ve gotten a surprise shower or two.

However, like the other weeks, it didn’t bother the fishing! The fish don’t mind getting wet and here in La Paz, it wasn’t that bad. The rains mostly showed up at night and, although it rained hard here and there, the rain was mostly gone by daytime. The biggest factor is wind when these storms hit and as long as the winds aren’t tossing the waves around and it’s safe to get out, we’re still out there fishing, although we know of several operations that canceled their boats.

That being said, the fish continued to check quite nicely!

Both our Tailhunter Las Arenas Fleet and our Tailhunter La Paz fleet did mostly limits of dorado each day. If I had to tell you what the difference was, in La Paz, there were much more fish. They were eager and the fish were almost right in La Paz Bay. We didn’t have to go very far. This was great, especially on those days when cloudbursts threatened. So, everyone got fish!

At Las Arenas, the fish weren’t as plentiful, although fishing was good. But the fish were generally larger than the fish at La Paz.

So, if you wanted fast and furious action with double and triple hookups, our La Paz fleet was better If you were out to maybe get larger dorado, then our Las Arenas fleet was the better choice. Since most of our clients fish a few days on each side, everyone was able to pack their ice chests with filets!

In addtion to dorado there were again some nice wahoo hooked although many were lost. Often, the wahoo showed up right where the dorado were feeding and made short work of light live bait lines! However, a few were hooked “just right” on the light tackle and made it to the pangas with much high-fiving and knuckle-bumping!

As well, we stuck a few marlin and sailfish with most of them getting released plus rooster fish, jack crevalle and some huge bonito!

The surprise fish were the pargo that we were hooking including some big dog-tooth snapper and mullet snapper that we usually only see in the spring, plus also some sierra which are really rare this time of year since we only get those during the cooler months. That leads me to believe waters might be cooling already for the season. We’ll keep you posted!

dorado becky and jimmy csutoras tags 7-13

She called it her “best fishing day ever!” Rebecca Csutoras is an avid hunter and angler and was on her 2nd trip with us and dad, Jimmy Csutoras, both from the Sacramento Area. She spent the week fishing with us, but on this particular day landed a box load of big bull dorado and also released two striped marlin. It’s been a much better week of fishing this week than last.

Oh the joy! George Higi III, from the San Diego CA area, man’s-up with a double lift of a big bull dorado and his first-ever wahoo taken near Cerralvo Island. George “grand slammed” in that he got 3 trophy game fish…the wahoo…the dorado…and also a striped marlin. This was his first time fishing with Tailhunters.

He came to get a roosterfish so he came to the “roosterfish capital of the world.” Bill Lewis from San Diego CA shows off a gorgeous pez gallo with Captain Pancho taken near Las Arenas. This fish was released.

Rick Hosmer and Randy Calvert had a week full of giant dorado averaging 40-50 pounds like the ones here with a chunky yellowfin tuna tossed in for variety. Rick said, “there’s some spots of 100-pound tuna out there at the 88 bank.” He’s with Captain Mundo here on the beach at Bahia de Los Muertos.

They only had 1 day to fish having traveled from South Africa with just a brief stop in La Paz. So, Kris and Jo Biddle made the best of it with two trophy bull dorado which they brought to our Tailhunter Restaurant for a big cook-out. This was their first time fishing…ever!

It seem the wahoo are back! We had several nice hook-ups this week south of Cerralvo Island like this one held up by our amigo, Esteban Ramiro, who took this on a dark Rapala slow trolled off the bank.

Doing it right! Not only was this her first marlin, but Becky Csutoras got it back in the water and released this fish as well with the help of Captain Joel. They got this striper north of La Paz. She also got some nice bull dorado (see photo above). Dad released his first marlin as well. See the photo below!

Jimmy Csutoras from the Sacramento area was fishing with his daughter, Rebecca, and Captain Joel and both of them got striped marlin this day (see photo above). Jimmy and Rebecca both released their marlin, and during the week also released their 3rd marlin to swim and fight another day. This as Jimmy’s first marlin.

Chuck Banning, like so many others, wanted his first roosterfish and got it done with Captain Adolfo and this great-looking rooster he caught near the Las Arenas light house and released. Chuck is from the San Diego area.

Not all battles end so well! Parting shot with Rick Hosmer who battled big dorado all week, but this one got him back by busting the tip off his new Shimano stick.

BIG FISH MORE VARIETY AS WEEK FISHING GETS BACK ON TRACK!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of July 1-7, 2013

The week started somewhat shaky and with a lot of trepidation given how erratic fishing was last week with wind, cold water, an offshore storm and a historic full moon. But this, week ended up on a very optimistic note.

It seemed that with each day, conditions got better. Water got bluer. Waters got warmer. More bait areas started to show up. More sargasso weeds started to gather in the channels. Waters calmed down and the chop and swell mellowed out.

And sure enough…the fish decided to play. Not full chargers but we’ve had a very good week of fishing.

The dorado bite that has been so lacking hopefully turned a corner. Again, not many small or medium fish. Almost 90 percent of the fish were trophy 30-50 pound bulls. I’m not exaggerating. Several times we put all the fish on the beach on scales and NOTHING that came back was UNDER 40 pounds! These were all huge world-class mahi with those big heads and attitudes when hooked. I would say probably early in the week, most anglers weren’t used to the big boys and we lost 50% of the fish!

However as the week went on, we got better at it. Maybe 75% of the fish were making it to the boat. Again, not a lot of fish, but when you put 2-4 huge bulls in the boat and maybe lose another 2 or 3…that’s a helluva day of exhausting fishing.

Add to that the appearance of more marlin and sailfish to spice things up as well as flurries of 20-50 pound tuna and then roosters along the beach and for most folks that meant some tired arms and full ice chests! The marlin were almost all released and averaged about 100 pounds but we also hooked a few blues that were lost on light tackle. Roosters were very repectable 40-50 pounders on the high side and we also hooked a few 30-50 pound wahoo as well.

Hopefully, thing will only improve!

P.S. At the time I’m writing this, we’re watching to see if Hurricane Erick will do anything. Probably nothing to us, but it might push up some big swells and chop from down south

Big roosterfish again this week with this gorgeous pez gallo for first-timer Tyler Ehlers from Denver, Colorado. Great colors on this fish and I can tell it’s a big fish because Tyler is 6’7″ tall and plays college baseball! Note how close to the beach they are. Many of these roosters are only in a few feet of water. Tyler and his grandfather caught a number of nice roosters over several days and released all of them.

Espirito Santo Island north of La Paz also started to kick out a few dorado as well as waters nicked up a few degrees in warmth. Our amigo, Ziggy Haspod, from Santa Barbara hooked this one on live bait.

It’s hard to suppress a grin when you’ve got a trophy pompano in your hands like this slug of a fish caught by Randy Choate from Idaho on light tackle near Cerralvo Island just off Las Arenas. It’s been a good season for big pompano, but I can’t remember seeing this many this large! Great eating!

No Santa Clause isn’t visiting La Paz in the off-season! But, our buddy, Walt Topping had a super 3 days of fishing with our Tailhunter La Paz fleet taking big cabrilla and pargo like this one every day…all of them trophy fish…maybe the best 3 days of any rockfishing I’ve seen this season!

Even our Tailhunter Restaurant manager, Raul Chollett just had to get in on the roosterfish action desperately wanting to get his first pez gallo. He just recently started fishing and has the “bug” pretty badly so he took a day and got several nice roosters off Las Arenas including this fish estimated at 20-25 pounds. Al the roosters were released.

Tom Ames visited us with his flyrod last fall and got some nice 10 pound roosters that really impressed him. After 4 days of fishing and catching roosters like this on the flyrod and light spining gear, he had the biggest grin and says he’ll try to come back again before the year is over. His largest was a 40 pounder.

Ziggy Haspod told me he NEVER gets in the fishing reports after all the years he has fished with us. I told him “catch big fish and take good photos!” This week he gets in twice. Once for his dorado in the photos above and now for this HUGE barred pargo (pargo mulato) he caught off Espirito Santo Island. Ziggy…you made it! He’s coming back in July.

Here’s a story…ALMOST a world record! Kevin (“Chino Verde”) Shiotani of Thousand Oaks was just about done for the day fishing off Espirito Santo Island with our other good amigo, Rick Hosmer, when Kevin’s rod with a live caballito went bendo! After a 25 minute fight on 50 pound test, he ended up with this massive amberjack estimated at 130-140 pounds which would have made it just under the IGFA records! Unfortunately, the fish was cleaned and cut up before anyone realized!

Here’s another photo of Kevin’s huge fish this time the amberjack is being held up by Captain Mundo Lucero. Just to get an idea of the massive bulk of the amber. It’s the big cousin of the yellowtail and is great eating!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of May 19-26, 2013

Another great week of inshore fishing with some stellar rooster fish action. It’s still a little windy and downright chilly in the mornings, but if you were looking for action this week, it probably couldn’t have been better, especially for lots of variety inshore for light tackle and flyfishers plus the bonus of warming waters with some dorado and billfish moving in!

For the past 3 weeks or so we’ve had some of the most solid rooster fish action I’ve ever seen in almost 20 years. The fish are stacked up along the beaches near Las Arenas right up close to the beach within 100 yards of the break and often in just a few feet of water visible from the pangas. They are also rolling around the islands near the south end of Cerralvo Island as well as Espirito Santo Islands.

Clients have been hooking and releasing 4, 5, 8, 10 or more roosters per panga with fish ranging from 10 up to 60 pounds and some dynamic battles especially on the lighter tackle and on the flyrods. We’ve had a number of first-timers as well as youngsters, wives, girlfriends and families out lately as well so this is just exciting action for them to hook these exotic fish close to shore in calm waters plus hook into other species as well in the same areas.

Along the beaches and islands and shallow reefs, we’re also seeing some monster 30-40 pound pompano (related to the rooster fish…except good eating), as well as sierra (which means there’s still some cooler water around plus some truly huge pargo (snapper) and cabrilla (sea bass). We have also had some surprising jags of amberjack up to 50 pounds near Espirito Santo Island that seem to come and everyone gets excited then the next day the fish are gone. But when they’re on, it’s non-stop action on big fish.

But the bonus this week has been the warmer waters have finally brought in a smattering of dorado between 10 and 35 pounds as well as some marlin biters which is very encouraging as it seems the warmer water fish are a bit tardy moving in! Oh and we had a few wahoo bite off this week as well.

Also, in case you hadn’t heard, a near-world-record was also caught this week in our waters by Kevin Shiotani of Thousand Oaks, CA. Kevin was fishing with Captain Mundo Lucero on a panga near Cerralvo Island at the end of the day and had a live caballito in the water when he got hammered by and amberjack estimated at 130-140 pounds. He fought the fish for 25 minutes on 50 pound test! Spectacular catch but unfortunately, the fish was cut-up not realizing the potential as the world record is only about 150 pounds!

Good amigo, Steve Hartsook, from N. California has been visiting us for years and came down earlier this year than normal finally getting into some nice yellowtail fishing with our Tailhunter La Paz fleet despite some pesky winds.

Retired Sherriff’s officer, Verda Boyd, usually comes with her husband, Tim, in December and the way the winds blew this week, it might’ve been about that cold! But Verda came without Tim for some yellowtail fishing and produced this hefty forkie fishing off Espirito Santo Island with Captain Joel.

Big red pargo lisos (mullet snapper) for Kwame Satterfield who was visiting us from Antioch, CA. The double catch was taken while Kwame was fishing with our Tailhunter La Paz fleet. He’s posing here at Bahia de Los Muertos. The big snapper/pargo are schooling in the shallows right now.

We just started getting some good roosterfishing the last week or two and most of them have been quality pez gallos. Jeff Brown from Minnesota caught and released this beauty off Espirito Santo Island. There have been some good schools showing up with some nice quality fish to start the season.

Happy smiles from Yolanda Wheeler. Her first time ever on the ocean…first time ever fishing on the ocean…and her first fish on the ocean…a nice dorado! She was so excited she was jumping up and down in the panga! One of our first dorado of the season also!

Far from home, but always welcome, Rod Brown visits us several times a year from distant Wrangell, Alaska! He always does well. Maybe two of the last yellowtail of the changing season, Rod’s posing with Captain Joel from our Tailhunter La Paz fleet.

Jackson, Mississippi in the house! Randall Carrier came a long way to visit us on his first trip and it paid off (just before the winds kicked up) with this nice wahoo on his first day and first day ever! The wahoo was stuck at the south end of Cerralvo Island.

PARTING SHOT! When fishing is already tough, don’t complicate it! Our resident amigo and fishing champ had a tough day…then found out later that “someone” had put bananas aboard! This was the only fish caught on the panga all day! For those who don’t know…bananas are bad luck!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of April 7-14, 2013

After such a spectacular week two weeks ago, Mother Nature kicked up again to remind us that there are some things we still can’t control and we really had a difficult week of fishing. The bugaboo winds that really determine all things down here howled and blew demonically and either damped the fishing or outright, kept our anglers off the water.

It’s too bad because we were really charging into (what I thought!) was high gear.The previous week we had our first big tunas…the best wahoo bite in severe seasons…big rooster fish show up…first dorado of the season…big pargo and cabrilla finally kick in…some solid yellowtail still biting…we were kicking up our heels and ready to charge!

And then this week came on. As they say…”in like a lion.” The winds roared.

Actually, our weather seemed to reflect what much of the west to middle of the U.S. and Canada got…cold temperatures, high winds… One day we just brought all the boats back to shore. Another day we just “suggested” it might not be so good to go out and told everyone to just stay back on the beach rather than get beat up (they had other extra days to make up the missed day). Two of the rare occasions when we maybe could have gone out, but why? Go out and get beat and wet? It’s supposed to be fun.

On a few other days, it was just too rough to even get bait or get to the fishing areas. So, this resulted in really slow fishing. So, that was pretty much the story of the week.

When we did get out, we did get a few yellowtail, some dorado. Some sierra. Some nice rooster fish were also caught. We did get two marlin hooked and dropped. As well, some pargo were taken. But, I need to be honest…it was a stinky week. We’ve had better.

The good thing about fishing the Baja…it doesn’t stay bad for long. We should turn the corner again…probably by the time you’re reading this.
