Cabrilla huge roger thompson tags 1-14-proc

He’s a monster magnet! No matter the fishing, Roger Thompson always sticks big fish. He got this sweet cabrilla (Mexican seabass) off the north end of Cerralvo Island.

The only had one day to fish and it was their first time with Tailhunters, but Annika and James Gervais found a nice little jag of dorado and got a limit of fish like these. People ask all the time for “larger boats” to catch blue water fish and “go further out!” Notice how close to shore the caught these dorado!

SLOW PICKY WEEK TO END/ START THE YEAR

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Dec. 29, 2013 to Jan. 5, 2014

I think the fish took the holiday weekend off. Honestly, it was scratchy fishing, at best. Cooler temps and windy conditions didn’t help. I think that was more of a factor then the good moon phase and it wasn’t enough to overcome the water and wind.

There was still some good inshore action. There’s still some dorado hanging out and some schools of 10 pounders were located pretty close to shore and a good spot for our pangas launching out’ve Bahia de Los Muertos near Las Arenas. Nothing, big but still some good light tackle fun and a nice surprise for winter fishing.

For other species, there were some good jags of bonito. Not such great to eat, but not much tougher than hard-charging bonito to keep a rod bent and since we’ve had quite a few families during the holidays the bonito have been great for the kids as well as folks just looking for some action on the water and something to do…especially if they’re snow-birds from chillier places just wanting to enjoy some sunshine.

There’s also some cabrilla (Mexican sea bass) that were in the counts. (Including the gem in the photos above that Roger Thompson caught off Cerralvo Island). Most of the cabrilla were little 2-3 pounders. Some rooster fish and decent numbers of sierra as well. No pargo to speak of and I would have to officially say that the great marlin bite of the past few weeks is probably done for the season.

It was another surprising week of marlin running around our waters despite the fact that it’s WINTER! Usually, we stop seeing billfish around the end of October or so, but this year, they’ve been thick, hungry and willing to bite! Verda Boyd, our amiga from the Bay Area near San Francisco, always rocks the fish and go this one with Captain Jorge just outside of Bahia de Los Muertos. Unfortunately, they were not able to revive this fish, but most of the billfish are getting released.

Another of the bluewater surprises this late in the season is the continued presence of dorado. Not big ones, but fun-sized school fish around 10-20 pounds like this one that Llew Williams caught with Captain Pancho off Las Arenas.

WINDIER CONDITIONS BUT GOOD VARIETY OF FISH!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Dec. 15-22, 2013

Lots of variety this past week. After the stellar fishing we’ve had the past few weeks that surprised many of us, this week seemed to be a little more typical of what winter fishing is like in La Paz. It was breezy and a bit chilly even tho’ the sun was out most of the time. It was a tad choppy as well. All typical winter weather when fishing this time of year.

However, the fishing had a really good mix of species with perhaps a bit more inshore fish than we had been getting which included nice bunches of sierra and cabrilla as well as bonito. However, the nice surprise again was the showing of striped marlin and other blue water species that we don’t usually see this time of year.

The marlin were respectable 90-130 pound fish and almost all were released (except a two that couldn’t be revived) but a real treat given that they were taken close to shore and most on light tackle. But sometimes, the marlin were…for lack of a better word…”PESTS!” Anglers either had caught and released a marlin or two or had no interest in marlin and wanted to catch something else and, as one angler laughing told me, “The marlin wouldn’t leave us alone! It was like they followed the panga around!”

As well, we still have schools of 8-20 pound dorado cruising nearby and we had a few bites on wahoo once again although most bites were lost. As well, we can’t discount that there are still nice trophy rooster fish up on the beach areas and in the shallows that are running 15-40 pounds and all getting released. All-in-all, not bad as we head into the first week of winter and the Christmas week!

Tim Zimmer and a jubilant Captain Jorge of our Tailhunter Las Arenas fleet, hoist up this beefy wahoo off the south end of Cerralvo Island in the early morning. Great way to start the day and more evidence of the great blue water fish we’re still experiencing this past week!

Can you tell it’s winter in La Paz? Our Florida, amigo, Llew Williams, has been fishing with us for many years and came to fish with us in December this time. Never expecting to catch dorado, wahoo and this big trophy rooster he’s trying t cradle so he can take a photo and release it. That’s Punta Perrico and the old Hotel Las Arenas in the distance.

Captain Gerardo is a big big fella so his size somewhat dwarfs Julie Gragg and here nice wahoo she caught on her first time fishing and visiting La Paz!

I think this is Verda’s 3rd time fishing with us this year. She’s a gangbuster angler from the East Bay of San Francisco and shows off a nice rack of sierra, a dorado and a cabrila. She also got a marlin as well.

COOLER WEATHER WITH WARM WATER FISH!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Dec. 8-15, 2013

As one of our fishermen this week said, “I can’t believe how many marlin are in the water. It’s crazy. This is December and we fished for 4 days and it was almost like we couldn’t get away from them! It was like they were following us around. We hooked and released 5, but could have caught others!”

Another said, “We know it’s off-season, but never expected to catch marlin, let alone 3 in two days and lost 2 more. Great fun to catch-and-release big fish!”

And another said, “Fight of my life. We were catching dorado, which we never expected in the winter so I had 30 pound test on when a marlin bit just about 100 yards from shore!”

His buddy said, “We thought we’d be fishing for sierra and maybe some cabrilla and instead we loaded a cooler with dorado and wahoo. I’m glad we released the marlin!”

And that’s pretty much how it went this week! Again, another surprise fishing week. It was windy and definitely cooler with some gray skies as is typical of fishing this time of year and we highly recommend not to forget bringing a jacket aboard. But, the fishing the last few weeks has definitely NOT been seasonal.

We did get sierra and cabrilla for sure. In fact, it was one of our better weeks for the inshore fishing which combined for cabrilla, bonito and even a few smaller rooster fish.

But, I’m again surprised by the continued presence of blue water fish like marlin (never had a November and December like this!), dorado and wahoo in the area. As I’ve mentioned before, we’re ONLY fishing with our Tailhunter Las Arenas fleet. We’ve pretty much shuttered out Tailhunter La Paz fleet as it’s usually too windy or not worth it to spend 1-2 hours getting bumped around to get to the fishing grounds. Plus the bait guys just aren’t out much since there’s not many folks fishing out’ve La Paz for the same reasons. So, it just makes more sense to keep fishing with our Tailhunter Las Arenas fleet where the fish are close; there’s bait around; and even if it’s a little brisk, we’re somewhat sheltered by Bahia de Los Muertos and the lee side of Cerralvo Island.

Not many anglers around this time of year so it’s kinda nice to be out there fishing and you almost have the whole Sea of Cortez all to yourself!

AIRLINE UPDATES

Just a heads-up. Looks like there’s some updates for flights from the U.S. this year. Normally, Aero Mexico flies from Los Angeles to La Paz on Sundays and Thursdays. This is the ONLY flight direct to La Paz non-stop. But, it looks like they have added some Saturday flights as well! Great news.

Also, most of our amigos fly to Cabo and then we have our Tailhunter shuttle come get them. Cabo is such an easy no-brainer much of the time. There’s more flights. There are daily flights. It’s usually alot cheaper flying to Cabo. With the newly completed road, it’s now just a bit over 2 hours now zooming up to La Paz!

Well, Alaska Air has opened routes from Boise ID to San Diego now! San Diego is a great airport and it’s way better than flying into LAX any day! Several of our amigos and clients have already booked that flight from Idaho and are really happy with it. San Diego to Cabo is cake!

Quite a surprise, but wahoo are still on the chew! Happy amigo, Fernando Sucre, from the San Francisco Bay area, was able to get in one day of fishing and scored this tasty wahoo near Cerralvo Island. The presence of wahoo has been a great treat so late in the season.

Recently retired amigo, Tim Zimmer, has been making the most of his free time fishing his brains out all over the country. He and his wife always make a point of visiting us in December and always do well. We had a great week of marlin fishing with most of them getting released. Check out Captain Jorge and Tim’s nice billfish.

Ken Gragg is another of our frequent amigos. This is his 3rd trip this year, and in 2 days fishing this week with Captain Gerardo scored 4 wahoo! This one seems to be missing it’s nose, but it’s a big fish. Captain Gerardo is NFL lineman-sized guy!

Check out the roosterfish! In December!!! What’s up with that? Steve Medley got in two days of fishing and scored this trophy roosterfish just off the beach to take a great photo and release the fish to fight again! It’s been the best roosterfish season in years!

Another bucket list fish! Prof. Mark Marcus came to visit us from Washington also popped a big rooster this week. He’s kinda struggling with the hot fish to take the photo, but it’s a sweet fish and was released after the photo! He also got a wahoo as well! See the photo below! Some great fishing!

DOUBLE ‘HOO! Professor Llew Williams from Florida and Professor Mark Marcus from Washington tag teamed for this double billing of wahoo off Cerralvo Island this past week. They took chunks back to our Tailhunter Restaurant for some great eats! Nicely done!

Chris and Damon Lewis are brothers who met up in La Paz for some fishing. Chris is from Mexico City and Damon lives in Redwood City near San Francisco. Yes! There’s still dorado in our waters. Normally, warm water fish, they’re still lingering in surprising numbers!

CRAZY MARLIN AND WAHOO LIGHT IT UP!

La Paz -Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Dec. 1-8, 2014

It has truly been a surprising end of the season here in La Paz. Mainly because the season hasn’t ended!

Here it is almost Christmas. Yes, it’s getting cooler. Yes, it’s getting windier and choppier. We’re supposed to be fishing inshore right now for cabrilla, pargo, bonito, and sierra.

Instead, we’ve still got blue water pelagic species still biting. And it’s not just one or two. I mean, crazily, the fish or on a serious chew!

We had several days this week when almost every single one of our pangas hooked at least one or two striped marlin between 90 and 120 pounds. We’ve had several days where every panga hooked 1-3 wahoo each between 15 and 40 pounds. We’ve still got trophy rooster fish up on the beach up to 50 pounds. Plus, there’s schools of 10-20 pound dorado out there as well!

This is more like the kind of fishing report I’d be giving in the summer or fall. Not in December. Not just a few weeks before Christmas! It’s been a wacky year, but I would never have expected this. Some days, it’s been like a buffet line. Pick and choose what kind of fish you want to fish for! I have no idea what the inshore rock fishing is like because no one is fishing for the inshore species! Maybe there are pargo and cabrilla and sierra to be caught, but those species have to be feeling ignored because just a few further yards offshore, there’s dorado and marlin and wahoo ready to bite!

It’s been a great late season treat. No complaints!

It was one of those nice tranquil holiday weeks. Not a whole lot of fishermen on the water, but a nice time to be in the area with some great weather and, not bad fishing. Here’s the morning view of Bahia de Los Muertos as we launch to go fishing for our Tailhunter Las Arenas Fleet.

They were a little tough to find early in the week, but the dorado bite got better as the week went on with most fish about 10-15 pounds like this decent bull held by our Captain Armando on the beach at Bahia de Los Muertos.

Yes! It’s hard to believe, but there are still good number of striped marlin and sailfish in the area to punctuate what has been a very good year for billfish. Most of the billfish have been running about 100-130 pounds and thankfully are getting released. Most of the catches have also been unintentionally caught when guys are fishing for other species and the line gets picked up by a billfish! A nice treat and very unexpected this late in the season!

Captain Archangel hoists up another roosterfish for the camera before letting it go. Another species we don’t often see this late in the season. But, we’re finding them in the shallow waters inshore near the lighthouse. All of them are getting released.

WEEK STARTS SLOW ENDS ON UPSWING

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Nov. 24 to Dec. 1, 2013

Winds and waters got a little cooler this past week and we even had little flurries of rain that threatened. We still got some fish, but overall, being a holiday weekend there just weren’t that many anglers in town. The week started rather slowly and I figured that the season changes finally caught up with us. Fishing was slow. Just a few fish here and there.

But that’s what I had been expecting for about this time of year as the season changes to cooler conditions. Basically, that means fewer blue water fish like dorado and billfish and more inshore species like cabrilla, pargo, jack crevalle and sierra. So, after a few so-so fishing days early in the week, I was about ready to call it and say the warm-water species are gone.

But, then as the week went on, fishing got better. We started hitting more dorado schools. We had a few biters from billfish (sailfish and marlin) and even got a few nice-sized rooster fish! The dorado do seem a bit more scattered, but it’s great that they are still around. Likewise, the roosters are where you’d expect them…around the Las Arenas lighthouse and off Punta Perrico, but the fact that they are even here this late in the season is kinda cool! The marlin? Who knows! It seems that every day at least one of our pangas is getting hooked up and more often-than-not, several hookups a day. I think the waters are still warm enough to hold them in the area, plus there are still some big schools or bonito in the area which is perfect food for the billfish.

So, as of my writing, there’s still some pelagic species running around. Again, I’m not sure how long this will last, but we’ll enjoy it as long as we get it. The forecast for the coming week calls for some increasing winds and even a slight chance of rain so we’ll have to keep an eye out.

A good example of some of our cooler water species that are becoming more pre-dominant was the seasons change. Aaron Chipley holds up some of the best-eating fish in our area…a sierra and a cabrilla (Mexican seabass).

Jane Vanderzanden on her first trip from Oregon to visit Tailhunter in La Paz puts another dorado in the panga fishing with our La Paz fleet north of town.

Yes, we’re still hooking marlin and sailfish this late in the season. Bob and Craig Brown with Captain Armando hooked this one and weren’t able to release it, but donated much of the meat. They were fishing near Cerralvo Island.

COOLER WATERS AND BREEZES STILL PRODUCE END OF SEASON FISH

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Nov. 3-10, 2013

We had a pretty good week of fishing here in La Paz, but once again, it’s obvious that the seasons are changing. It’s definitely cooler and windier these days and for at least two days this week, the winds and chop really hampered the fishing. However, for the most part, since most of our anglers fish several days, an “off-day” gets made up on other days!

The dorado really keep us in the game, as they have for the past two or three months. Lots of school-sized 10-15 pounders, but this week, we found a few jags of larger fish off Cerralvo Island wind permitting with fish in the 20 -30 pound category that could quickly fill up a cooler.

Almost all our fishing now is with our Tailhunter Las Arenas fleet unless someone really wants to fish out’ve La Paz As mentioned above, the winds are kicking up now and when the northern winds blow, it’s just too difficult to head north out’ve the bay and get beat up heading to the fishing grounds. It’s just easier to drive over to Bahia de Los Muertos and fish on the lee side of Cerralvo Island or the lee of Bahia de Los Muertos and still find fish without getting wet or your teeth jarred out’ve your head!

In addition to the dorado, we were also getting marlin and sailfish with all fish being released plus some pargo and cabrilla and no shortage of bonito for fun. A few rooster fish along the beach in the 30 pound class plus jack crevalle rounded things out. We did have several biters of wahoo, but the sharp teeth made quick work of the lines and no fish were brought to the boats.

15th ANNUAL LOS CABOS TUNA JACKPOT TOURNAMENT

In a dramatic last-minute win, after two-days of fishing, the boat “Reel Quest” pulled into the Cabo San Lucas scales with a 192.4 pound yellowfin tuna to sweep the money boards at the 15th Annual Los Cabos Western Outdoor News Tuna Jackpot Tournament.

With more than 540 thousand dollars on the line, 7 teams shared the purse, but the big money winner were the team on the “REEL QUEST” that took the big money of $242 thousand dollars with a 192.4 pound yellowfin tuna.

As is our usual this time of year, Jill and I spent the week working at the 15th Annual Los Cabos Western Outdoor News Tuna Jackpot Tournament in Cabo San Lucas. It was a great time. The slogan is “Fish Hard. Party Harder” and there was plenty of both with 4 days of partying and 2 full days of hard-core tuna fishing.

Seven teams shared the purse of over $540 thousand dollars with the big money being taken by the team on “REEL QUEST” who dramatically won in the last few minutes of the 2nd day of competition. They pulled in with a 192.4 pound yellowfin tuna to sweep the money boards.

The tournament was the largest of the year for Cabo San Lucas with 134 teams from around the world participating in the big event. In addition to the big money purses, the event also raised thousands of dollars for several charities.

Shandi Weeks from Paso Robles CA went at it for an entire week trying to get a big fish. On her 4th day, she finally nailed it with a huge 50-pound class bull dorado…the largest in weeks…that was longer than she is tall! Shandi was fishing with live bait with our Tailhunter La Paz fleet. During the battle, the fish snapped her fishing rod when it got close to the panga and sped off on another blazing run. She still got the fish!

Our good amigo, Scott McKenzie, from Seattle WA fishes with us several times a year over many years and had never put a trophy roosterfish in the boat until this week…at a time when when we normally don’t see many roosters! Scott caught this big one off Las Arenas and released the fish after the photo op!

Bill Lee is from the San Francisco Bay area and shows off some great colors on this bull dorado taken fishing off Las Arenas.

First timer, Michele Edwards, from Loma Rica CA celebrated her 25th anniversary by fishing an entire week with us and did some great action with dorado like this one as well as several billfish.

Folks come to fish with us for years and never get a shot at one of our famous roosterfish! Mi primo and his wife, Tim and Taylor Torres, were fishing with us this past week for the first time and got 2 nice roosters that they caught and released. Nearby, you can see the cliffs of Punta Perrico near Las Arenas.

Another of our great gals who came to fish with us this week, Michele Conklin, from Washington State was celebrating her retirement and fished with Captain Jorge near Las Arenas and shows off the great colors on a “tiger” bull dorado caught just off the beach.

Another of our amigas from Washington in the house! Dan Hicks, her husband, fished the day before and Lisa didn’t have a chance, so Dan told her he’d watch their little boy Sammy back and the hotel so she could go fishing alone! She did well with dorado like this one! Bravo to both of them on the tag-team fishing!

Cradling a big trophy roosterfish, Jan Jacobs, took this big boy just off Punta Perrico and quickly released it. Great fish! We caught several of these big ones this week with pretty much all of them being released.

Parting shot…with Jeff Brown from Oregon…and a giant squid with Captain Jorge. After about 6 weeks of having the giant squid around for bait and for eating…it looks like the squid are finally gone. It was great to have them and great fun.

SEASON IS CHANGING BUT DORADO STILL LEADING THE CHARGE WITH ROOSTERFISH AND MARLIN!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Oct. 20-27, 2013

A great solid sunny week of fishing…just the way it’s supposed to be!

Every day…pretty much every panga got into fish with a nice variety of species with dorado leading the way. Both our Tailhunter La Paz and Tailhunter Las Arenas fleet got into nice jags of the mahi mahi. If I had to say, there were MORE fish with our Las Arenas fleet, and fewer but LARGER fish with our La Paz fleet.

As well, both sides were sprinkled daily with billfish hookups with marlin and sails hooked daily and most of them getting released and many of our anglers getting their first billfish. It’s quite a treat, especially when a first timer who has never fished gets their first billfish..sometimes their first fish ever is a sailfish or marlin! It happened several times this week! Folks who may have only caught a trout or never even had a rod in their hand suddenly have a 150 pound freight train at the end of their lines getting towed around in a panga!

Speaking about first timers as well…we have rooster fish biting! I don’t know what’s up with that because normally, this isn’t rooster fish time, but the last two weeks, we’ve had 150-50 pound just off the beaches slamming the rods. Since no one has been fishing for them for awhile, it’s like these fish feel like they’ve been ignored. They’re not there every day, but on the days they roll up on the beach, there are double and triple hookups! Again, a big thrill for alot of our clients to get this much sought-after exotic fish.

I can tell the the fishing is changing. Cooler winds from the north are definitely increasing. It’s a pretty time to be here and the weather is cooler by the week. Some days us locals, and even my captains, are all wearing sweatshirts and hoodies! (Of course, the tourists in shorts and flip-flops think we’re crazy since it’s still 85 degrees outside!). But the nights are definitely cooler and we’re seeing more and more cooler water fish like sierra, cabrilla and pargo in the counts.

Mike Liberski from Washington is fishing with us this whole week. One thing on his bucket list was a marlin. It didn’t take long. His first day out with Captain Pancho, he scored this blue marlin estimated at 160-180 pounds. Good one Mike…he got it up for a quick photo and released the fish to swim away strongly! Bravo! Quite a few billfish in the area the last few weeks! Check out the flat waters. Only about a mile outside of Bahia de Los Muertos!

I think I will frame this photo taken underwater of a nice bull dorado by amigo, Gary Wagner who owns the famous Giggling Marlin Bar in Cabo San Lucas and has his place in Bahia de Los Muertos as well.

Kathy and Craig Sanford dorado tags 10-13

Celebrating their 29th anniversary, Craig and Kathy Sanford came up for the week to visit us and spent several days on the water tangling with some great dorado like these two bulls taken north of La Paz. Craig and Kathy are from the Phoenix AZ area and are standing on the beach at Balandra.

We have been trying for years to get John Hughes and his dad Carl down to visit us from their great operation at Aurora Fishing Charters in Seward, Alaska! They finally made it down and got into our great dorado bite but Carl also got his first marlin and John got his first roosterfish with Captain Armando and our Tailhunter Las Arenas fleet. It was a great week for billfish with lots of hookups and fish either lost and most released. Eric Johnson from Washington got his first billfish with Captain Adolfo driving the boat and he battled this one with Cerralvo Island in sight. Fishing 3 days, they released most of their fish but were not able to release this one and donated much of the meat.

All the way from Kodiak Island, Alaska, Mike Anderson came down for a quick two-day run with us and got into some nice dorado like this one while fishing with our La Paz fleet.

Can’t beat the colors of a dorado! Jeremy Lord just put this one in the boat off Espirito Santo Island. Jeremy is from the Sacramento CA area and was on his first visit with us at Tailhunter in La Paz.

John Hughes took this photo of a “small” 25-foot whaleshark that came up and swam with their panga for awhile. It’s that time of the year when whalesharks visit our waters and John got this great shot, but kicked himself for not jumping in the water to swim with the big fish. The gentle animals are true sharks, but eat plankton and small krill and grow up to 50 feet and are a big attraction in La Paz for scuba divers and snorkelers.

DORADO STILL BENDING RODS BUT POSSIBLE STORM COMING THIS WEEK!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Oct 6-13, 2013

As I write this, we’re watching our computers screens wondering if the storm cell to the south of us is going to head our way and turn into a tropical storm and bring with it, some winds and rain our way. We’ve dodged quite a few bullets this year and our last few storms have veered away at the 11th hour. We just have to wait and see. I’m not worried so much about a little rain or some thunder showers. Those come and go or you can alway drive away or around cloudbursts. Fishing is rarely affected.

However, wind is all encompassing and can make for chop as well as turn-over-the-water. Plus, it can cool waters and, if they are northern winds make it pretty much too uncomfortable to be fishing. So, we’ll just have to wait and see. We’ve got alot of fishermen here this week and we surely hate to disappoint!

Anyway…

It’s been a good week of fishing. The full-turbo dorado bite we’ve had for two weeks died a bit, but everyone was still getting dorado. For numbers, our Las Arenas fleet plugged easy limits of fish between 8 and 20 pounds. For larger quality fish, our La Paz fleet got fewer fish but the fish were larger between 15 and 30 pounds. Bottom line…if you wanted dorado, they were there every day for the taking. Our light tackle and flyfishermen especially had a good time with this grade of fish.

However, there were some surprising other species as well.

There’s giant squid in the water that we’re catching for bait but those are also drawing marlin and sailfish into the area and we’re hooking a nice number of billfish…and releasing most…but they’re alot of fun. Our biggest of the week might be 180-pound-blue that was released. These fish are also feeding on the smaller dorado and bonito as well.

But, in addition to the billfish, we hit some jags of rooster fish as well. These were fish in the 15-40 pound class and were in the Las Arenas area near the lighthouse and in Bahia de los Muertos. Normally, it’s pretty late in the year to be encountering roosters, but a great catch for many of our anglers who weren’t expecting the exotic fish! All roosters were released.

Additionally, pargo and cabrilla showed up on the counts leading me to believe that waters are starting to cool. For sure, we’re getting more and more north winds indicative of coming winter conditions. Normally, we don’t see this happening until November but looks like we’re in the transition period.

This is my new favorite photo! I think I am going to frame it. After the hundreds of fishing photos I have published this is one of the most creative. Ken Campbell wanted to show everyone the big dorado he LOST! Anyone can have a photo of the fish they caught but how many have a photo of the the fish they lost? Bravo, Ken! (He did catch plenty of other dorado, but this would have been the biggest and was a heartbreaker!)

Our amigos, Rick Hosmer (tail) and John Nagy (head) always do well. It’s Rick’s 4th trip this year and John’s 3rd trip this year and they always fish with Captain Mundo. They stuck this hefty blue marlin with a live bait estimated at about 200 pounds. Attempts to release the fish were not successful. They are posing with the fish at Bahia de Los Muertos near Las Arenas. Lots of billfish this week!

Yes! There are still roosters around! Steve Sibayan helps his son, Nathan, with this nice rooster caught near the Las Arenas lighthouse on live bait. The fish was released and the Sibayan family was on their first trip to fish with Tailhunter in La Paz (see photos below)

Our Tailhunter family! Son Jarrett Pfost and his girlfriend Diana Pleasants from San Diego spent the week with us and did well with the dorado bite at Las Arenas.

“Dancing Don” Busse is one of our favorite amigos who visits us each year. Don fished several day this week and poses with one of his larger fish from his first day fishing from Las Arenas. The nice dorado swallowed a chunk of chopped squid.

Devon Boatman was another new amigo who gave us a try this week for the first time. He spent an hour-and-a-half on this striped marlin…his first. He got it to the boat and figured it was about 100 pounds and could easily heft it into the panga for a photo. NOT! It was heavier than he thought! So…a quick photo and a nice strong release for the marlin! Well-done!!! Devon is from Lake Elsinore CA .

dorado Sibayan family small held high tags 10-13

From the mountains near Sacramento, John Kennedy, fished with us pretty much the whole week and had great outtings on the big dorado bite that’s been going on about 2 weeks now.

Al Basye and his future son-in-law-to-be Ehab Abufaire from Orange Co. CA fished 3 days this past week and got a bit of variety in the catch with dorado plus the nice barred pargo.

Gary Bryson from northern California gets a hand with his first-ever billfish taken near Espirito Santo Island north of La Paz by Kevin Hale, son Eric Bryson and Jeremy Lord. The fish was hooked on a live bait and could not be released. It was a great day. In addition to the sail, they also got a box of dorado; caught and released a hammerhead shark. They also saw a huge whaleshark and jumped into the water to swim with it. Quite a day!

Dorothy and Terry Humphrey dorado tags small 10-13

From Aloha, Oregon (love that name!), Dorothy and Terry Humphreys were visiting us for the first time and came to spend Dorothy’s birthday in La Paz. Although they live in Oregon, she had not fished in 30 years even though she loved fishing. So, they came to visit! And they did great on dorado!

Angela Olivero is another of our first-timers this week. He’s from Murrietta CA and with Captain Pancho running the panga poses with his largest dorado of the day. That’s Bahia de los Muertos in the background.

Amigo, John Kennedy, took this great photo of the fishermen mixed up with the commercial fishermen at dawn’s first light all fishing for giant squid near Las Arenas. This is how we start the day catching these big squid for bait. The dorado have been eating these like crazy!

Jeremy Frieze holds up one of the big squid that we catch in the morning and use for bait. It’s actually alot of fun and harder than most people think to pull one of these huge cephalopods up from the deep.

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Sept. 28 to Oct. 6, 2013

I’m not sure how to explain this, but fishing “slowed down” this week…compared to last week! But it wasn’t bad!

Last week, our Tailhunter anglers were catching triple and quadruple limits of dorado as fast as they could bait hooks so the bar had been set pretty high! This week started like that but, as the week went on it “tapered” to only single and double limits. So, there was some disappointment. But hey…still catching and releasing 10 or 15 dorado a day is NOT a bad day on the water!

Not sure what happened. The waters didn’t change . The temperatures didn’t change. I didn’t see any noticeable differences in the winds or other variables, but no doubt the fishing dialed-down just a notch or two. Most noticeably, this was for fishing out’ve La Paz where the pangas had to work a little harder to find and catch fish.

For Las Arenas, for the most part, limits were still the rule rather than the exception with some fast action most times and for most pangas although there were some blips here and there.

Still, it’s alot of fun, especially on light tackle to get into a voracious school of 10-15 pound dorado. Guys would tell me that they could see bigger bulls on the periphery of the marauding schools, but the younger bucks would zoom in so fast that the bigger fish had no chance at the hooks! But, we still did manange to get a few 20-40 pound fish every day.

For Las Arenas, there is still no live bait to be had. But, that has not slowed the bite. What we’re doing is jumping into the squid holes in the morning and hauling up some of those giant squid. Using cut up squid for bait works just fine. The dorado don’t slow down at all.

For La Paz, we’re still getting some mackerel and caballitos for bait since we go out earlier than some of the other fleets. So, we hook a few dozen of them. Then we go buy some sardines from the bait guys. After that, go jig up some bonito to use for cut-bait. That gives us 2–4 different varieties of bait to offer once we’re at the fishing grounds.

For other species, the biggest comment is more for what we are NOT catching. Tuna just have not come to the party this year. That’s what most guys are asking since this is traditionally tuna time. We’re getting some wahoo and every day a few billfish are hooked and released most of the time. Many of the billfish are hooked while anglers are in the middle of a dorado frenzy and the marlin and sailfish show up to join the party by eating the chummed squid as well as feeding on the dorado themselves!

Roosterfish are still along the beaches although no one much has been fishing for them since they’re not good eating and the dorado are so rampant. We’re also seeing a few more pargo and sierra as the waters are now starting to cool down.
