It’s been awhile since we had some good yellowtail photos to post up but we finally got a few this week. Captain Joel and our great amigo, Rod Brown from Alaska pose with a nice pair of forkies taken north of La Paz!

And dorado too? Triple shot of mahi for Captain Joel, Jeff and first-timer Miles Brown.

All the way from Minnesota, Jeff Brown, stuck this trophy yellowtail near Espirito Santo Island north of La Paz Bay.

Great eating and a super-sized cabrilla (Mexican seabass) for Jeff.

SPRINGTIME CONDITIONS BRING VARIETY!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of March 23-30, 2014

Except for a few breezy days, it was more like late spring/ early summer style fishing this past week. Air temps were in the low to mid-80’s and actually pretty pleasant. Water temperatures which have risen unseasonably high have been in the mid-70’s to low 80’s.

The resulting effect was a decent mix of fish. Some cool water fish. Some warm water fish. But, overall a nice variety.

The cooler water fish mostly taken inshore and in shallow areas included some nice yellowtail up to 25 pounds. Nothing widespread, but a smattering here and there. As well, we took some nice slugger pargo, cabrilla and sierra around both islands. Some good fish were lost to the rocks…not unusual when big fish are holding close to structure like reefs and rocks!

Warm water fish…well, once again…dorado! We’ve been getting them on and off for about 2 months now. Way early for a normal season, but once again the warm water species were found anywhere from the islands, to the shallows around the beaches, near the buoys and free-swimming in the channel. No great numbers, but every day a few dorado here and there. Mixed with the other species, it made for some interesting boxes of fish coming back in our pangas each day.

We’re going to keep an eye on these water temperatures! Those temperatures will dictate what we’ll be catching.

We’re finally headed home to La Paz. After almost 3 months on the road encompassing almost 15,000 miles of driving…9 states…10 hunting and fishing shows including: Sacramento, Denver, Puyallup (Seattle), Portland, Yakima, Phoenix, Boise, Long Beach, Salt Lake City and this past week in San Diego. Whew!!!

And what a grand time we had…almost 20 years doing this now and every year it just gets better and better! Jill and I want to thank all our amigos who came to see us at the shows and everyone during the 3 months for their friendship, support, encouragement and smiles. And to all our friends for making us feel welcome and all the hospitality on the road…all the gifts…food…drinks…invitations…Tailhunter tribe members are the best!

Now, let’s head home to La Paz and get some fish! God bless you all!

Dorado in winter? Yup! Jeff Burnham from Larkspur CO came down to wet some lines with us and stuck this nice bull fishing off Las Arenas. The nice mahi was taken just outside Bahia de Los Muertos!

Nothing wrong with this colorful bull dorado with big smiles and a great catch by our amigo, Larry Cornwall. Hard to believe getting this kind of fish in March!

Yes! There’s wahoo around Cerralvo Island right now, like this pair of speedy skinnies shown off by our Tailhunter Captain Jorge on the beach at Bahia de Los Muertos.

With Tailhunter captain Archangel checking the water for any “followers” as dorado will often do, Dennis McGuffee poses with another sweet mahi while fishing out’ve Bahia de Los Muertos. After this they came inshore and using light tackle played with numerous inshore species.

More like it! This is normally, what we’re catching this time of year…cabrilla (seabass) like this tasty one caught by Jeff Burnham.

We had an incredible time in Salt Lake City! What a party at the International Sportsmens Expo with lots of sign ups for our 2014 La Paz fishing season and great photo ops for Jill and our amigas!

SPRING-LIKE CONDITIONS SET THE SCENE AND THE FISHING…UNTIL THE WEEKEND!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of March 9-16, 2014

As one of our anglers said, “It’s incredible. It’s like fishing in May down here right now!” And that about sums it up. “I come down and expect winter fishing and instead encounter dorado right in the bay!”

He has it pegged about right.

Unseasonably warm water has turned the fishing somewhat on it’s head. Normally, we’re getting yellowtail and sierra and other cool-water fish this time of year and instead we’ve run into a pretty steady jag of dorado up to about 20 pounds…flirted with shots of wahoo several times a week…caught the occasional tuna…and even hooked a few marlin! All fish, we don’t normally see until late spring and even early summer!

As well, there have been some surprising catches of amberjack in the 20-80 pound class to go with cabrilla (sea bass), pargo (snapper), sierra and bonito and the occasional yellowtail as well.

This past week, the highlight were probably the dorado that were free-swimming literally within yards of the beach at times. Some of these fish were respectable quality fish too with some decent bulls in the panga boxes. The fish ranged from Bahia de Los Muertos out to the buoys and around the island. They weren’t highly concentrated and it wasn’t a wide-open bite by any stretch, but the fact that the fish are even here this early and have been since January is remarkable. When we did run into the fish, our anglers were getting 2-4 fish per panga mixed with some of the other species.

But, just like they say in the commercials…”But wait!”

We also took a few wahoo off the island early in the week and some smaller roosterfish are starting to show as well. All good signs! Throw in a few sierra some action on the bonito and there was some OK action this week.

At least until the weekend hit. Mother Nature slammed us back with a reminder that March comes in like a lion and roared in with 30-40 mph winds more characteristic of this time of year! The high winds pretty much shut things down for the weekend. But, it’s going to be like that at times and we’ll just have to keep an eye out for this.

A big “muchas gracias” to Salt Lake City for treating us so well and all our friends who came by to say hi and our new amigos who booked fishing trips to La Paz for 2014 at the International Sportsmans Expo! Our booth was jumping for all 4 days and it was great to see so many of our amigos and make new ones as well. This was our 9th show of the season and now we wrap things up and head south once more to the Fred Hall Fishing show at the San Diego Co. Fairgrounds in Del Mar CA for our 10th and final show!

This is more like it for March fishing! Joe Arata of Pacifica CA strikes the hot pose with a slugger yellowtail he took on the iron off Cerralvo Island. Yellowtail were a bit more predominant this week.

What the heck! Roger Thompson is one of the best anglers we know. He was throwing the iron for yellowtail and said his jig barely hit the water when this big-time marlin smacked into it! On 40-pound test, he battled the big billfish for over an hour! Attempts to release the fish were not successful and the meat was donated. Marlin generally don’t show up for another 3 months or so! Just another indication that we’re going to see more warm water species showing up!

If there’s any question about the waters being warmer than usual, check out this crazy story from John Duteil who was visiting us from Canada:
We went to the beach at Tecolote and wow the fish were literally jumping out of the water. Two dorado came speeding right up to the shore, then started flipping around one made it back out to sea but the other was stuck. Our friend Dennis still eating his lunch walked over and picked him up. (Pics attached) moral of the story if you can catch them this easy on the shore imagine what you can do in a boat!! it is so easy to catch fish in La Paz they are literally jumping out of the water for you to catch!”

Best show of the season? Maybe so! Just finished up the mighty Fred Hall Fishing and Boating Show at the Long Beach Convention Center that went from Wednesday to Sunday! We hear it broke attendance records and the place was packed and the Tailhunter Booth never had a dull moment! Don Busse (far right) brought over his merry group to toast us with Jill leading the saludos at our booth! We saw a zillion friends and booked lots of fishing trips for 2014 to La Paz! Thanks, Long Beach! Thanks to everyone! No onto Salt Lake City!

CAN IT GET STRANGER? WATERS WARM AND BRING TOP WATER SPECIES!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of March 2-9, 2014

So sorry. Impossible to write anything from the show and then I’m up to 3 or 4 a.m. just catching up. It’s after midnight now Sunday. If you can still use it, here’s some info:

The strange week early season continued this past week with more un-characteristic biters all week, but especially early in the week. In what seems like we may have by-passed our cold-water season and got right into spring-like conditions, we continue to hook up with a crazy variety of fish indicative of waters that are unseasonably warm!

We did get a few more big yellowtail this week, but the numbers are way off from what they should be. Normally, this time of the year, we are hammering big 25-40 pound ‘tails and getting 2-5 per panga not counting the ones we lose!

Instead, we are only getting about 3 – 10 per week! That’s it. They are a nice grade of fish, but the counts are not what they should be.

However, don’t panic! The slack is being taken up by other fish including dorado, wahoo…even marlin and we got a tuna (reportedly a 24-pound class yellowfin was taken!) this week as well. All of these are normally warm water species that we don’t see for another 2 months or so!

Mixing that in with some cabrilla and pargo and it’s making for an interesting “chop suey” of fish in the fish box these days. Will it continue?

I have no idea. We seem to get new surprises every week! Two things can happen. The waters will continue to warm in which case, forget the cold water species like the yellowtail an sierra and such. They’ll go deep or leave the area far too early!

Secondarily, they water will suddenly get cool and cold and we’ll lose the warm water species and by then it might also be too drastic of a change for the inshore species.

I tend to think the waters will continue to warm so look out…it’s going to be a season of early big fish!

LONG BEACH ROCKED! NOW HEADED TO SALT LAKE ISE SHOW!

Our booth in Long Beach was visited by so many super amigos but we never expected so many dignitaries from La Paz to come up as well including our amigo Agustin Olachea, head of the La Paz hotel association! It was great to see him at the show helping to promote tourism in our city!

We had an incredible run this past week at the Fred Hall Fishing and Boating Show at the Long Beach Convention Center. What a slamming good time seeing so many of our S. Cal friends and so many of our amigos in the fishing industry. It was often shoulder-to-shoulder in the aisles and the din of the crowd was so raucous that we had to yell to be heard! Couldn’t have been more fun and I also got to celebrate my birthday in the middle of about 10,000 of my best friends like I do every year! Thanks to everyone who came by to chat about fishing in La Paz and also wish me another good “trip around the sun!” It was a grand time!

But now…

Here we come Salt Lake City! Two more shows to go and Salt Lake it ALWAYS fun! We’ll be at the Expo Center in Sandy, Utah to be specific in that fine facility from Thursday to Sunday. What the heck is going on? Wahoo in winter? Jack Steele originally from Seattle WA put this gorgeous ‘hoo on the boat fishing near Cerralvo Island late in the week. Check out the calm waters…it makes a difference!

Fat forktail! Charlie “Sticks” McGee is one of the best fishermen I know and a dynamite drummer and music teacher as well from San Diego. Our amigo stuck this thick yellowtail out in the channel north of La Paz.

When it comes to putting big fish in the boat, our amiga, Donna Thompson, from La Ventana via Long Beach CA holds a thick, fat wahoo…a personal best!

We’re smack in the middle of whale watching season and taking folks out daily to Bahia Magdalena to see the whales. Contact us for a once-in-a-lifetime experience and get close to these great animals. They normally start to leave around March so don’t delay!

Tailhunters is finally leaving the Pacific Northwest where we have been for the last month doing some outstanding shows in Puyallup WA (Seattle), Portland OR and Yakima WA! Thanks to everyone who has come by…old friends and new amigos! Lots of bookings for fishing with us in La Paz this year! But now, we leave the snow and rain and one of our favorite areas and head south all the way to the Phoenix ISE show where it’s supposed to be 80 degrees! THE WEEK IN SURPRISE BITE

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of February 9-16, 2014

An otherwise slow week was saved by a late week chew that turned up some quality fish.

As typical, we got the usual winds, especially early in the week. That never helps with the fishing but we come to expect that during the winter. Especially northern winds. It also really jacks up our ability to get live bait. But, as the week went on, the winds diminished.

And suddenly the bite turned on.

And it was a surprise. Usually, we look for inshore fish during winter. But instead, we got some real trophy stuff. Once again, just like last week, wahoo showed up around Cerralvo Island. Normally, it’s far too cold for us to be seeing these prized fish, but the boats took the at the north and south end of the island on slow trolled baits as well as lures. The fish were good quality too with fish going 20–50 pounds which are real slammers, especially when you consider that these are known to be the “fastest fish in the world” capable of blazing line off a reel at close to 70 mph!

But, on top of that, we also picked off a few dorado. Again, not only are these warm water fish, but we shouldn’t even be seeing these until about later March or April.

In addition to the wahoo and dorado, a few more of the yellowtail also bent the rods. These fish are more typical of this time of year and we should be going full bore on these any week now. So, it was encouraging to see more of these in the counts.

As for other species, we took some small pargo and snapper, cabrilla, and lots of bonito.

It’s been a great show season and Jill and Jonathan now leave the Pacific Northwest and the Yakima WA sportsmens show and head south to the Phoenix International Sportsmens Expo.

Our next show starting this week will be in the Cardinal Football Stadium where the NFL Cardinals play! This is a super show! Lots of stuff for the whole family! Come say hi!

TAILHUNTER ROAD TOUR TAKES IT TO PHOENIX

Our 2014 Tailhunter Road Tour takes to the road again this week. After an outstanding month in the Pacific Northwest attending shows in Washington and Oregon, we now drive south and take off our rain and snow gear and put on the shorts as we go to the International Sportsmans Expo in Phoenix, Arizona. This is really a super show right on the floor of the University of Phoenix Football stadium where the NFL Cardinals play! It’s a great place for a show and there’s always great weather, plenty of parking and lots to see!

The dates are Thursday to Sunday (Feb. 20-23rd).

Jason Mills with us for the first time sports a nice fresh dorado while fishing off Las Arenas with the Tailhunter Fleet. It was a little tougher on the dorado as waters are getting cooler, but the fish are still around and a great bonus species to be catching in December!

TOUGHER FISHING FOR CHRISTMAS WEEK

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Dec 22-29, 2013

It was a tougher pull this week for fishing around La Paz. After so many weeks of unseasonably good fishing for a variety of species, this past week was more typical of what we see around our area for this time of year. It was definitely chillier on the water. A few more grey skies in the morning and choppy waters. It was also much windier than in the past…perhaps the windiest week overall that we’ve had in awhile.

Whether because of the cooler temperatures or because of the wind or a combination of both, there were fewer of the blue water pelagic species that have treated us for so many weeks unexpectedly. The marlin and dorado were much harder to find and the bite was sporadic.

However, inshore, we did get into some nice jags of fun sierra which are always great sport and great eating as well as bonito which are great sport…and not such good eating! If you got into a school of sierra, limits weren’t hard to come by.

As well, we surprisingly still got rooster fish. None of the big guys, but some fun 8-15 pounders which were a nice bonus and all fish were released.

It looks like this coming week is going to be less windy so we have our fingers crossed for some better fishing!

Tim Zimmer and a jubilant Captain Jorge of our Tailhunter Las Arenas fleet, hoist up this beefy wahoo off the south end of Cerralvo Island in the early morning. Great way to start the day and more evidence of the great blue water fish we’re still experiencing this past week!

Can you tell it’s winter in La Paz? Our Florida, amigo, Llew Williams, has been fishing with us for many years and came to fish with us in December this time. Never expecting to catch dorado, wahoo and this big trophy rooster he’s trying t cradle so he can take a photo and release it. That’s Punta Perrico and the old Hotel Las Arenas in the distance.

Captain Gerardo is a big big fella so his size somewhat dwarfs Julie Gragg and here nice wahoo she caught on her first time fishing and visiting La Paz!

I think this is Verda’s 3rd time fishing with us this year. She’s a gangbuster angler from the East Bay of San Francisco and shows off a nice rack of sierra, a dorado and a cabrila. She also got a marlin as well.

COOLER WEATHER WITH WARM WATER FISH!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Dec. 8-15, 2013

As one of our fishermen this week said, “I can’t believe how many marlin are in the water. It’s crazy. This is December and we fished for 4 days and it was almost like we couldn’t get away from them! It was like they were following us around. We hooked and released 5, but could have caught others!”

Another said, “We know it’s off-season, but never expected to catch marlin, let alone 3 in two days and lost 2 more. Great fun to catch-and-release big fish!”

And another said, “Fight of my life. We were catching dorado, which we never expected in the winter so I had 30 pound test on when a marlin bit just about 100 yards from shore!”

His buddy said, “We thought we’d be fishing for sierra and maybe some cabrilla and instead we loaded a cooler with dorado and wahoo. I’m glad we released the marlin!”

And that’s pretty much how it went this week! Again, another surprise fishing week. It was windy and definitely cooler with some gray skies as is typical of fishing this time of year and we highly recommend not to forget bringing a jacket aboard. But, the fishing the last few weeks has definitely NOT been seasonal.

We did get sierra and cabrilla for sure. In fact, it was one of our better weeks for the inshore fishing which combined for cabrilla, bonito and even a few smaller rooster fish.

But, I’m again surprised by the continued presence of blue water fish like marlin (never had a November and December like this!), dorado and wahoo in the area. As I’ve mentioned before, we’re ONLY fishing with our Tailhunter Las Arenas fleet. We’ve pretty much shuttered out Tailhunter La Paz fleet as it’s usually too windy or not worth it to spend 1-2 hours getting bumped around to get to the fishing grounds. Plus the bait guys just aren’t out much since there’s not many folks fishing out’ve La Paz for the same reasons. So, it just makes more sense to keep fishing with our Tailhunter Las Arenas fleet where the fish are close; there’s bait around; and even if it’s a little brisk, we’re somewhat sheltered by Bahia de Los Muertos and the lee side of Cerralvo Island.

Not many anglers around this time of year so it’s kinda nice to be out there fishing and you almost have the whole Sea of Cortez all to yourself!

AIRLINE UPDATES

Just a heads-up. Looks like there’s some updates for flights from the U.S. this year. Normally, Aero Mexico flies from Los Angeles to La Paz on Sundays and Thursdays. This is the ONLY flight direct to La Paz non-stop. But, it looks like they have added some Saturday flights as well! Great news.

Also, most of our amigos fly to Cabo and then we have our Tailhunter shuttle come get them. Cabo is such an easy no-brainer much of the time. There’s more flights. There are daily flights. It’s usually alot cheaper flying to Cabo. With the newly completed road, it’s now just a bit over 2 hours now zooming up to La Paz!

Well, Alaska Air has opened routes from Boise ID to San Diego now! San Diego is a great airport and it’s way better than flying into LAX any day! Several of our amigos and clients have already booked that flight from Idaho and are really happy with it. San Diego to Cabo is cake!

In a surprising bite the last few weeks, trophy roosterfish have shown up around the Las Arenas lighthouse which has been a real bonus to many of our anglers like Dan Hicks, our amigo from Seattle WA, who never expected to get a roosterfish this week, let alone a huge 50-60 pounder that he caught and released! Normally, we don’t see roosterfish this time of year, but lots of our anglers are finding the exotic fish lately.

You can never start them too young and Damon Davis, is the perfect dad to show his 5-year-old son, Caleb, how to do it, since Damon runs a sportfishing boat in Orange Co. CA and his dad is our amigo, James “Hawk” Davis an avid ace fisherman who lives in La Ventana near La Paz. Damon was out fishing near Las Arenas this past week and is shown on the beach with Caleb at Bahia de Los Muertos.

Marlin and sailfishing has been unusually good the past few weeks and it seems we hook several a day. About 90% are getting released or busting off…not surprising since we’re often fishing wit light tackle, but they’re still great fun. Leo Green from Washington got this striper while fishing with Captain Jorge of our Tailhunter Las Arenas fleet. The fish couldn’t be released but the meat was donated.

Good week for kids! And a great time for the family with all the school-sized dorado around right now. Clint Throop from Rockford Michigan wit his boy…6-year-old Christian pose with this fresh dorado fishing near Las Arenas. Another great Kodak moment that I”m sure Christian will always remember . Ed Hicks and Tiffany Isaacson were on their first trip fishing with us in La Paz. Tiffany wasn’t even sure she wanted to go fishing, let alone go to Mexico, but she’s convinced now. After a week of dorado fishing, she also got this nice sailfish off Cerralvo Island. Most of the meat was donated after it was not able to be released. Tiffany and Ed are from Washington.

From Oregon, Miles Brown, visits us every other year-or-so and always does well fishing with his dad, Rod. He shows off one of the school-sized dorado they caught off Cerralvo Island.

SOME RAIN AND WIND AS SEASONS CHANGE AND SEASON TAPERS BUT FISH STILL BITE NICELY!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Oct. 27-Nov. 3, 2014

We had another solid week of fishing with dorado again at center stage, but the biggest event would be probably be Mother Nature posting that the seasons are definitely changing. Northern winds, at times pretty strong, pretty much blew all week. That’s significant for several reasons.

Not only is is a harbinger of the changing seasons, but it also heralds cooler waters and a changing of the guard as far as fishing is concerned. They are a tad earlier than normal this year, but nevertheless, as they continue to blow and cool things down, the blue water pelagic species will start to move off and we’ll see more inshore species.

Therefore, fish like marlin, sailfish, and dorado, that have been our mainstays the past several months will be replaced by more inshore species like pargo, cabrilla, jack crevalle and sierra. Part of that, is also because it will be harder to get too far out away from shore anyway.

As the winds hit from the north, it can get downright wet and bumpy. That’s why we pretty much shut down our Tailhunter La Paz fleet mostly from December to March. Unless you want to get soaked and have your kidneys jarred, it’s just not worth it. It’s easier to have us shuttle you over to Bahia de Los Muertos and fish with our Las Arenas fleet where at least you’re somewhat protected and the fishing is closer.

However, this year, it looks like we’re closing down the La Paz side a bit earlier. This past week, even in La Paz Bay, the north winds had white-caps even in the bay! Plus we had rainstorm Raymond come through. Extremely late for a rainstorm, but we had one really good night of good rain. It didn’t affect the fishing and we still got out and got fish, but this is pretty late in the season to get a rainstorm although it did make for a nice cozy night to stay in and watch the rain in the bay from a seaside restaurant (At Tailhunters, we had a full load of folks watching football plus the rain outside and they enjoyed it!).

As, I said, we still got fish!

The dorado were still voracious most days with most of our pangs getting limits or near limits of fish…if that’s what they wanted. The dorado have been so prevailant that anglers would load up on more dorado than they wanted…even catching and releasing so many…that they would try for other species instead. So, the counts didn’t really reflect the reason some anglers didn’t get limits of dorado. It was because the anglers weren’t fishing for dorado.

Instead, the boxes and action were filled with other species…marlin and sailfish were still out. I’d have to say the billfish angling was good to excellent most days with, again many of the guys getting their first billfish caught and most released. As well, rooster fish up to 60 pounds were taken. Again, very unusual to see rooster fish this late in the season, but they’re there near the rocky and sandy areas close to shore at Las Arenas. A great opportunity for our some of our clients to check it off the bucket list and get one of these exotic fish.

As well, the counts also showed some nice cabrilla, sierra, jack crevalle, bonito, snapper and pargo! Some of this is because the seasons are changing, as mentioned above. But, also because anglers were making a point to chase these species because they were tired of dorado. Alot of the anglers simply changed to light tackle…like bass gear and had some fun catching-and-releasing dorado as fast as they could go!

Also, we had wahoo hooked almost every day. I say “hooked” because almost every one of them hooked got off! Just fishing! But, obviously the speedsters are still out there. Some of the hookups occurred while guys were fishing for dorado and the dorado where schooling around at the panga and a wahoo would zip in and pick up the bait. On light tackle or straight mono, it’s not much of a battle when a wahoo going 50-70 mph with razor sharp teeth grabs the bait! If the hooks isn’t set “just right” it’s a short battle!

The first week of November is always the popular crazy Western Outdoor News Tuna Jackpot one of the largest fishing tournaments in Cabo each year. Both of us will be at registration on Wednesday and I will be working the scales while Jill is on the tournament central tent handling logistics. Shandi Weeks from Paso Robles CA went at it for an entire week trying to get a big fish. On her 4th day, she finally nailed it with a huge 50-pound class bull dorado…the largest in weeks…that was longer than she is tall! Shandi was fishing with live bait with our Tailhunter La Paz fleet. During the battle, the fish snapped her fishing rod when it got close to the panga and sped off on another blazing run. She still got the fish!

Our good amigo, Scott McKenzie, from Seattle WA fishes with us several times a year over many years and had never put a trophy roosterfish in the boat until this week…at a time when when we normally don’t see many roosters! Scott caught this big one off Las Arenas and released the fish after the photo op!

Bill Lee is from the San Francisco Bay area and shows off some great colors on this bull dorado taken fishing off Las Arenas.

First timer, Michele Edwards, from Loma Rica CA celebrated her 25th anniversary by fishing an entire week with us and did some great action with dorado like this one as well as several billfish.

Folks come to fish with us for years and never get a shot at one of our famous roosterfish! Mi primo and his wife, Tim and Taylor Torres, were fishing with us this past week for the first time and got 2 nice roosters that they caught and released. Nearby, you can see the cliffs of Punta Perrico near Las Arenas.

Another of our great gals who came to fish with us this week, Michele Conklin, from Washington State was celebrating her retirement and fished with Captain Jorge near Las Arenas and shows off the great colors on a “tiger” bull dorado caught just off the beach.

Another of our amigas from Washington in the house! Dan Hicks, her husband, fished the day before and Lisa didn’t have a chance, so Dan told her he’d watch their little boy Sammy back and the hotel so she could go fishing alone! She did well with dorado like this one! Bravo to both of them on the tag-team fishing!

Big smile from Dave Conklin who put this fresh one in the boat fishing with Captain Jorge just outside of Bahia de Los Muertos. Dave’s from Washington state and was on his first trip with us.

Cradling a big trophy roosterfish, Jan Jacobs, took this big boy just off Punta Perrico and quickly released it. Great fish! We caught several of these big ones this week with pretty much all of them being released.

Parting shot…with Jeff Brown from Oregon…and a giant squid with Captain Jorge. After about 6 weeks of having the giant squid around for bait and for eating…it looks like the squid are finally gone. It was great to have them and great fun.

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Oct. 20-27, 2013

A great solid sunny week of fishing…just the way it’s supposed to be!

Every day…pretty much every panga got into fish with a nice variety of species with dorado leading the way. Both our Tailhunter La Paz and Tailhunter Las Arenas fleet got into nice jags of the mahi mahi. If I had to say, there were MORE fish with our Las Arenas fleet, and fewer but LARGER fish with our La Paz fleet.

As well, both sides were sprinkled daily with billfish hookups with marlin and sails hooked daily and most of them getting released and many of our anglers getting their first billfish. It’s quite a treat, especially when a first timer who has never fished gets their first billfish..sometimes their first fish ever is a sailfish or marlin! It happened several times this week! Folks who may have only caught a trout or never even had a rod in their hand suddenly have a 150 pound freight train at the end of their lines getting towed around in a panga!

Speaking about first timers as well…we have rooster fish biting! I don’t know what’s up with that because normally, this isn’t rooster fish time, but the last two weeks, we’ve had 150-50 pound just off the beaches slamming the rods. Since no one has been fishing for them for awhile, it’s like these fish feel like they’ve been ignored. They’re not there every day, but on the days they roll up on the beach, there are double and triple hookups! Again, a big thrill for alot of our clients to get this much sought-after exotic fish.

I can tell the the fishing is changing. Cooler winds from the north are definitely increasing. It’s a pretty time to be here and the weather is cooler by the week. Some days us locals, and even my captains, are all wearing sweatshirts and hoodies! (Of course, the tourists in shorts and flip-flops think we’re crazy since it’s still 85 degrees outside!). But the nights are definitely cooler and we’re seeing more and more cooler water fish like sierra, cabrilla and pargo in the counts.

Kathy Terbu has made several trips to fish with Tailhunter over the years but she timed it right to get into the big dorado bite and was fishing with light tackle when this huge sailfish estimated at 140-160 pounds slammed into her line. She fought the fish for about 90 minutes. Most sailfish in our area are half this size. Attempts to release the fish were not successful and the meat was donated to several families.

Tracy Burns came down to fish a few days with her dad. She lives in Topanga Canyon CA and while fishing north of La Paz she put this big bull dorado in the boat along with a full limit of other mahi.

Fresh one! Vince Langgle from the San Diego Area, gaffs another big bull to put in the box. Dorado fishing this past week was as fast and furious as I have ever seen it. Maybe ever.

Dave “Mahi” Hill has been our amigo for many years and came all the way out from Texas to spend the with with us. He got 4 banner days of dorado fishing in with numerous fish caught and released.

The ladies had such a big week with us. Leslie Pilkington from Orangevale CA was on her first trip to fish with us in La Paz and had a successful outing with Captain Pancho and our Tailhunter Las Arenas fishing fleet.

It was a week full of school-sized dorado….all you could want. But there were still some big bulls mixed in like this beauty bull that might have been one of the largest of the week and caught by John Terbu from Utah. He’s on the beach at Balandra north of La Paz.

Another San Diego amigo, Chris Wellons, made the best of only two days of fishing with easy limits both day with this young bull dorado among many while on the beach at Bahia de Los Muertos.

Yes! There’s still roosterfish around. I haven’t posted up many photos the last few weeks because no one has been fishing for them. Everyone has been chasing all the pelagic species and ignoring the roosters. But there’s still some fish up on the beaches like Ted Kuhn’s 30 pounder. Ted’s from Arizona and he tried to release the fish but was unsuccessful. He also hooked a 40 pound class rooster as well.

If you fish with our Tailhunter Las Arenas fleet, this is how your morning starts…with fishing for giant squid like our amigo, Gary Pelkington . The squid make great bait but also setting some aside is a good idea for dinner!

MAYBE THE BEST DORADO BITE…EVER!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Sept. 22-29, 2013

The last two weeks may well have been the best dorado fishing we have seen in years around here in La Paz. Basically, ever since the last storm it was as if someone turned on a switch and the school-sized dorado either woke up or someone stirred up the nest and released a ha-zillion 10-20 pound dorado!

“We caught our first limit in less than an hour and then after that, we lost count of how many we released!”

“We only stopped the panga once and never moved for the next 3 hours. It was like being in a private trout pond except these were schools of dorado everywhere under the panga! It was crazy!”

“I’ve heard people joke about fish ‘jumping into the boat’ but the dorado were so thick they would actually bump in to the panga when they were charging the chum and I hooked one and it actually DID land in the panga. We had 3-5 dorado hooked up at any one time!”

“In the middle of the frenzy I felt this big slam in my back and thought it was my buddy slapping me, it was a small dorado that hit me in the back and fell back in the water!”

“It was like someone rang a dinner bell and these fish had never been fed but they heard there was a free meal! There were so many swarming in, around and under the panga!”

These are no exaggeration. For about the last 8 or 9 days, imagine 20…30…40 or more dorado per day! Anglers losing count of how many fish they caught and released. Fish, not even hooked, jumping all around the boats. Just jumping! Fish fighting each other to grab baits. Fish bumping the pangas and slamming into the gunwales. Fish hooked on hand lines. Fish eating bits of tortilla and grabbing bear hooks tossed into the water. Hooked fish getting knocked off the hooks by other fish chasing the hooked fish and the left-over bait getting picked up by another fish!

Just incredible dorado fishing unlike anything many of us have ever experienced.

My biggest worry is that we’ve had so many first-timers here and the think it is ALWAYS like this! The bar has been set awfully high!

On the light tackle and flyrod, these dorado have been spectacular!

Between our Las Arenas and La Paz fleets, the bite has been epic. If there was a distinction this week, it was that there were MORE fish at Las Arenas and a bit fewer fish out’ve La Paz, but bigger fish. Most of the Las Arenas fish were 8-17 pounds. The La Paz fish tended to be 10-35 pounders, just not quite as many!

As for other action, there’s been a far number of billfish hookups as sailfish and marlin cruise through the schools of dorado also eating the chum or baits or simply eating the many dorado. In the same areas, we also found wahoo again, although those hookups don’t usually last long. Finally ,contrary to the belief of many, there’s still roosterfish in the areas as we hooked several 30-40 pound fish along the beaches. No tuna to speak of except way way outside of Cerralvo Island. Waters might be getting cooler as we’re seeing a few sierra in the fishing mix. But, really hard to tell about other species since everyone has been chasing this mad dorado bite.
