Another good week for billfish surprisingly for so late in the season. Raul Chollet with Captain Armando got his first marlin. We got quite a few billfish and almost all of them were released. This one was taken just off Punta Perico.

From Wyoming, Rick and Amy Kasper always do well fishing with us. They got into a nice school of dorado just off Las Arenas. Dorado are getting more scarce as the waters cool, but so far, we’re still finding roaming schools.

Benny Salgado is often seen playing lead guitar with the Tailhunter Restaurant house band on Friday nights. He went fishing with us for the first time ever on the water and first time fishing. His first fish ever…a striped marlin!

Raul Chollet has another dorado for the panga. Most of the dorado this week were the 8-20 pound class fish, but they’re hungry and voracious!

Even though it’s almost December, there’s still roosterfish in the water! Captain Jorge with Amy Kasper just inside Bahia de Los Muertos caught and released this roosterfish.

Many thanks to our long-time amigo, Bill Boyce (orange shirt) who brought his great camera crew down this week to fish with us and film for his popular TV show “IGFA Saltwater Adventures.” They got some great footage and had some fun with our folks!

BLUE WATER SPECIES STILL HOLDING!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Nov 17-24, 2013

It wasn’t a spectacular week of fishing, but given the time of the year, it wasn’t a bad week either and there were some very good catches. It’s just that seasons are changing and water temperatures are dropping taking with it more and more of the warm water species.

But, still, we had OK numbers of dorado. Limits were harder to come by, but everyone still got a few dorado between 8 and 20 pounds. There were also some decent surprising roosters around near the Las Arenas lighthouse with most fish between 10 an 30 pounds. We also still have decent numbers of billfish around as well. Every day we got at least 1 or more hook-ups on sailfish or marlin with most fish either breaking off or getting released. All of these species are somewhat unusual to still be biting this late in the season so these catches are treats. More likely, we should be fishing for more inshore species like cabrilla, sierra, jack crevalle and pargo.

I imagine, as the waters continue to cool and winds get stronger, we’ll be fishing more and more for these inshore species.

One really nice spark this week were the appearance of wahoo. Mid-week, we got into a nice jag with several of our boats hooking up to the speedsters and a few getting boats. All of these were on the south side of Cerralvo Island and we had not taken any wahoo in about 2 week so this was a nice surprise to get into these trophies!

Our biggest day of the week happened to be when TV show host and IGFA Rep, Bill Boyce brought his film crew down to shoot for his TV show “IGFA Saltwater Adventures.” I was pretty nervous. Fishing had not been real great. It was also a full moon and windy plus being “off-season” wasn’t the best time to be fishing!

Still, Bill and his crew went out with our Tailhunter Las Arenas fleet and brought the cameras. Between our 3 pangas out, we got some great footage! 6 marlin caught and released. Some great action on dorado plus some rooster fish caught in Muertos Bay!

Compared to other years, this has been a banner wahoo season! Kelly SooHoo, from Pasadena CA was on her first fishing trip…on her first trip to Mexico…and first time on the ocean…and she bags a prized wahoo! She was fishing with Captain Armando off Cerralvo Island.

Good as it gets! Double trophys fish for Jim and Dan Bovee from San Diego who came back to the beach at Bahia de Los Muertos with a big dog-tooth snapper and hefty bull dorado!

Our Washington amigo, Ed Vander Veer, has fished with us many times and this was his 2nd trip of 2013. But, he had never caught a wahoo. This week he was in the thick of a dorado bite fishing with Captain Chito out’ve our Tailhunter La Paz fleet when the rod goes off. He thought it might be a dorado at first, but then a tuna. As the fish got close to the boat…SURPRISE…a wahoo…on bait and with no wire! Meant to happen! Great catch!

With the rains just about to hit in the background, Mike McArthur, from Los Angeles, still put a limit of dorado in the panga in short order and made it back in time! Check out the colors on this fresh one!

Big smiles for Mary Heilman Vander Veer who always does well with her favorite La Paz Captain Pancho and show off a nice bull dorado she battled on light tackle!

Our kinda family! Scott McKenzie and sisters Jana and Loren visit us yearly and the gals fish hardcore and are as competitive as Scott when it comes to fishing. They fished 5 straight days and pose here with some of their dorado from one day with our Tailhunter La Paz fleet.

From San Jose CA, Lily Chung had never fished La Paz before but had a great several day fishing with us and she smiles with another dorado in the boat!

ANOTHER STORM PASSES THRU BUT FISH DON’T MIND GETTING WET! BITE ON!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Sept. 1-8, 2013

We got another surprise storm this week with Tropical Storm Lorena suddenly rearing up and dropping some wind and rain on us. This is the 3rd week that we’ve gotten a surprise shower or two.

However, like the other weeks, it didn’t bother the fishing! The fish don’t mind getting wet and here in La Paz, it wasn’t that bad. The rains mostly showed up at night and, although it rained hard here and there, the rain was mostly gone by daytime. The biggest factor is wind when these storms hit and as long as the winds aren’t tossing the waves around and it’s safe to get out, we’re still out there fishing, although we know of several operations that canceled their boats.

That being said, the fish continued to check quite nicely!

Both our Tailhunter Las Arenas Fleet and our Tailhunter La Paz fleet did mostly limits of dorado each day. If I had to tell you what the difference was, in La Paz, there were much more fish. They were eager and the fish were almost right in La Paz Bay. We didn’t have to go very far. This was great, especially on those days when cloudbursts threatened. So, everyone got fish!

At Las Arenas, the fish weren’t as plentiful, although fishing was good. But the fish were generally larger than the fish at La Paz.

So, if you wanted fast and furious action with double and triple hookups, our La Paz fleet was better If you were out to maybe get larger dorado, then our Las Arenas fleet was the better choice. Since most of our clients fish a few days on each side, everyone was able to pack their ice chests with filets!

In addtion to dorado there were again some nice wahoo hooked although many were lost. Often, the wahoo showed up right where the dorado were feeding and made short work of light live bait lines! However, a few were hooked “just right” on the light tackle and made it to the pangas with much high-fiving and knuckle-bumping!

As well, we stuck a few marlin and sailfish with most of them getting released plus rooster fish, jack crevalle and some huge bonito!

The surprise fish were the pargo that we were hooking including some big dog-tooth snapper and mullet snapper that we usually only see in the spring, plus also some sierra which are really rare this time of year since we only get those during the cooler months. That leads me to believe waters might be cooling already for the season. We’ll keep you posted!

It wasn’t the best of weeks for fishing Strong winter winds whipped the area for several days giving even the palm trees along the La Paz Malecon on the waterfront little respite.

We know the fish are out there! Check out this big bull taken by Wayne Jarrett out at the 88 spot east of Cerralvo Island…just before the winds started. Big bulls like this aren’t very typical in the winter, but various reports from several areas confirm that the dorado are still hanging around! The problem is either getting to those spots or braving the waves and big winds to get the bait to fish for the quality fish like this! (Thanks for the great shot, Hawk!)

Horse yellowtail like this one caught by our amigo, Art “Doc” Flippin who comes all the way down from his job in the Arctic to fish with us, have been very close in the shallows just south of Bahia de Los Muertos. The promising bite was shut down by the winds and we plan to recon the spot again hopefully by mid-week when the winds should diminish.

It’s whale season as the grey whales have begun returning to Bahia Magdalena to the west of La Paz! It’s an incredible experience to get this close to the gentle animals and Tailhunters is running daily trips now through March to spend a day on the bay with the whales. Thanks to all of our amigos who came to visit us at the Denver Convention Center this past week. We has a blast seeing old friends and meeting new ones and talking about fishing in La Paz. WORST WEEK OF WIND KEEPS EVERYONE OFF THE WATER

La Paz/ Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of January 12-20, 2012

Not much of a week of fishing. In fact, how about zero fishing. I think that’s the first time I’ve reported that…EVER in 17 years down here in La Paz!

Cold weather and incredibly strong winds kept everyone off the water or close to shore. Certainly, not much fishing going on, but thankfully, we didn’t have anyone reserved for this week. It wasn’t just choppy, it was rough out there as it seemed the winds blew continuously as a windy front pushed through and chilled everyone! If you walked around town, everyone seemed to be bundled up although many tourists found 67 degree weather to be rather pleasant. For locals, there was a rush to put on jackets and long pants!

Commercial guys say there’s still some dorado outside at the 88 spot east of Cerralvo Island but no one really wants to go out there and get smacked around on a long run. There’s also yellowtail stacking up at the north end of Cerralvo Island as well as around Bahia de Los Muertos. The week really started out promising, but then the winds came up and it wasn’t worth it to go out. Everyone just wants the winds to stop!

Typically, we do indeed get winds during the winter, but rarely is it do we get continuous winds for several days. Normally, we get it for a day or two intermittently. We’ll keep an eye out on it. According to the advisories, we’ll start to see some decrease in the velocity of the winds about mid-week. Hopefully!

Dorado were again our bread-and-butter, especially for our clients fishing with our Tailhunter La Paz fleet. Even when the weather turned, the fish continued to bite. Captain Rogelio holds up a trophy bull dorado that Mark Gilliam of Thousand Oaks stuff of Espiritu Santo Island.

Wyoming first-timer, Amy Larson, had a banner day fishing out of Las Arenas with Tailhunter captain, Jorge. Now that we’re getting some sardines for bait, the fishing has improved with dorado getting most of the attention.

Shawn Parker got a bit of a mix fishing north of La Paz. Dorado from fishing topwater and nice barred pargo fishing closer to the rocks. Shawn is from the Reno NV area.

Brennan Lowery and Roger Hayak hadn’t fished with us in quite awhile, but had 3 pretty good days playing with the dorado schools last week. The show off a double-pair of mahi they caught their first day fishing with our Tailhunter Las Arenas Fleet. Both are from the Newbury Park / Westlake Village CA area.

Iowa in the house! Andy Gilliam did a good job repping the mid-west this past week. It was Andy’s first trip with us and he got a number of dorado similar to this one out of La Paz and Las Arenas.

Rick Kasper has place north or La Paz and visits often. In 31 years fishing the area, he had never caught a roosterfish until this past week when he caught and released this nice one off Cerralvo Island east of Las Arenas on a live bait.

Shawn Parker had a knack for nice pargo this week and he wasn’t even fishing for pargo! He was trolling deep water for wahoo with a Rapala when somehow this big pargo came up from the bottom and whacked the lure!

We had some brief thunderstorms this week, but some of them were pretty crazy! Mid-week we got a 45 minute dambuster that had downtown La Paz under several feet of water and turned streets into rivers!

Down on the malecon on the waterfront by our Tailhunter Restaurant, within minutes of the rainstorm starting, roads were blocked by torrents of water. By the very nature of these storms, several hundred yards away it was completely dry. Not a drop had fallen.

THUNDERSTORMS AND SUNSHINE MIX WITH DORADO AND OTHER SPECIES

La Paz/ Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Aug. 19-26, 2012

It was another crazy week of thundershowers on-and-off. It would rain one place, but not another. It would rain for 5 minutes or 60 minutes. One place would flood, but another place would be bone-dry! Downtown La Paz was under several feet of water early in the week as a flash downpour with thunder and lightning engulfed the commercial areas, but several blocks away, there wasn’t even any single rain-drop!

But, despite all that, we were able to continue fishing with no interruptions. Often, during this time of year, we’ll get these thunderstorms. You can often see them coming in columns of rain marching across the mountains or ocean. Pretty much all you do is either drive the boat around them or else you pull over and onto the beach …which is never far away…and wait it out for a few minutes then head back out .

Even tho’ the sun isn’t out sometimes, the fishing can still be good. The rains wash a lot of junk into the water and can really discolor the water especially with the run-off of mud from streets, ditches and arroyos. Seen from the air, it’s really a contrast between the dirty brown water and the true color of the ocean. However, the upside of that is all the debris that’s carried into the ocean as well. This includes brush, plants, trash, trees, parts of structures, branches…anything that floats.

This stuff accumulates on the surface and becomes a haven for baitfish. The baitfish, in turn, attract the larger predators, especially the dorado. So, one of the keys to fishing this time of year is to look for the current lines where the brush and debris will accumulate in long lines or just look for anything floating. Anything out there is worth investigating! Even a floating bit of styrofoam cup might be holding dorado under it. You never know! You could come up on a floating tree trunk and find dorado, tuna, wahoo and billfish all milling around it but never know it until you trolled by it or tossed some bait at it!

This past week there were some pretty decent days of fishing for both our Tailhunter La Paz and our Las Arenas fleets. The La Paz side had more fish and larger dorado but Las Arenas had some decent day as well with smaller dorado, but more variety with roosterfish, pargo, and a few billfish as well as scattered tuna. Most of the dorado were 5-15 pounds, but larger ones in the 20-30 pound class were around with some larger ones lost. Some striped marlin were also caught and released. Not many guys got roosterfish this week, but that might be because not many of our fishermen were chasing them, but the few that did go after them got some in the 15-30 pound category.

Still no wahoo to speak of and tuna remain elusive although we should be getting into them about now. September and October are usually the best part of the year for fishing !

No doubt dorado…like this nice bull take between Cerralvo Island and the peninsula are around. Not in great numbers, but it’s surprising that we’re getting big bulls of this quality so early.

The north side of Cerralvo Island turned out to be one of the more productive places in an otherwise slow week of fishing as huge amberjack, big cousins to yellowtail, put on a bite. The largest of these three amberjack weighed out at 87 pounds!

I usually don’t post up many marlin photos over the years for several reasons. First we encourage catch and release so a majority of our hooked marlin get let go and secondly, well, many marlin bust off! We had several hooked up this week that are still swimming after breaking off. More marlin seem to be showing up, but not all are willing to take a bait or lure just yet. This striper ate a trolled jig.

Even when fishing is slow, often our fallback are the feisty tough bonito that can really chew up tackle. Captain Yofo of our Tailhunter Las Arenas fleet took a shot on a flyrod and found himself in about a 15 minute battle on a 10wt fly rod. The fish was released.

SPOTTY FISHING AT BEST DURING DARK MOON AND SOLAR ECLIPSE

La Paz/ Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of May 13-20, 2012

In a few words, fishing this week around La Paz was…”WEIRD…SCRATCHY…SPOTTY.” Things are definitely changing and we’re going through that transition right now between the cooler waters and spring and the warmer summer waters. The fish are going through it too and so they’re adjusting. It’s a bit like when you bring a goldfish home from the church carnival in the little plastic bag. At home, it takes awhile for them to get acclimated to their new surroundings in the home aquarium with temperatures and oxygen levels different.

I think that’s what happened this week. Every day was different. Some days the fish bit. Some days they did not and it was like pulling teeth. One day one species would be the hot species and the next day a completely different species would take center stage and the fish that were hot the day before, were nowhere to be found!

The other thing was that bait got scarce! Sardine schools, the foundation of our fishing…just vanished. We got a little, but it was like pulling teeth to find enough to fish. Even the bait guys had problems finding it or found only a handful to sell or, it took the better part of the morning looking for bait to start fishing. So, of course, that also reflected on the fishing numbers. But, I’m not sure that would have made that much of a difference either because some folks went to trolling lures in the absence of bait…and they didn’t exactly light the world on fire either!

AND THIS WAS NOT A FULL MOON! AND THERE WAS NOT MUCH WIND EITHER! So, all you folks that think the fish bite better ALL the time during a dark moon, don’t say I never told you so!

This was bad all over. I hear on the East Cape and down in Cabo, the bite just dropped off the charts all of a sudden as well. Hopefully, it’s just the little dark before the big fish explosion!

So, what did we catch?

Well a little of this and a little of that…roosterfish along the shores were still active. Pargo and cabrilla also bit, but that always works better when you have bait! We had some really exciting catches on big amberjack and some very nice dorado were picked up as well as a few marlin. Here’s one example of crazy fishing. The awesome yellowtail bite we had going for 3 months fell apart about 3 weeks ago. Waters are just too warm. We’re gearing up for the bluewater species like dorado and tuna. One of our pangas went out for dorado and came back with…two nice yellowtail! Go figure!

The guys fishing conventionally, did better since they had more to work with. I really felt badly for the flyfishers. With no bait, it’s hard to chum fish up and get them interested. Fortunately, we didn’t have any flyfishers this week, but I know other friends who were out there doing their best in a difficult situation. They resorted to trolling or else using hookless lures to tease fish within casting range.

As for what’s coming up? The conditions look ripe. The waters look good. They are already up into the low to mid-80’s on the surface. Air temperatures in in the mid-90’s. I continue to think we’re right on the cusp of some really good fishing!
