All Sax Endo could say after battling this big dorado was, “My arms are so sore!” he said with a big smile. Sax is from Pasadena CA and took this trophy dorado while fishing with Captain Pancho and the Tailhunter Las Arenas fleet off Punta Arenas.

Incredible colors on this beautiful dorado caught by Billy Chung from San Jose CA. Billy said he fought the fish for about 20 minutes on his last day of fishing. Captain Armando helps out!

Yes! Wahoo are still around. Caryn Aizawa, was dragging a dark rapala off the south end of Cerralvo Island this past week when this speedy wahoo slammed the line. It was a pretty good week for wahoo!

Another amigo on his first time fishing with Tailhunter in La Paz, Mike Council from Ventura CA put the hurt on this trophy dorado fishing his 2nd day north of La Paz.

Darrell “Gomer” Oleson, our amigo from Utah, came down this past week and had a banner 3 days catching dorado with both our Las Arenas and our Tailhunter La Paz fleet. Here, he stands on the beach at Bahia de Los Muertos with a big bull.

Jeff Sakuda from Montebello CA has now visited us twice this year and has another trip set for October in between being a commercial pilot. Our amigo took a break from hanging dorado and stuck this thick wahoo near Cerralvo Island.

Big smiles from another of our Oregon amigos! Captain Victor lends a hand to Jim Oakes who was on his first trip ever to fish in La Paz. This massive big-headed bull dorado was an early morning catch at sunrise to start the day.

The ladies had a great week fishing with us and Teila Robnett visiting us for the first time from Colorado spent 3 days pulling limits of dorado like this one while on the beach at Bahia de Los Muertos.

ANOTHER TROPICAL STORM PASSES THROUGH BUT DORADO NOT AFFECTED!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report from Tailhunter International for Week of Aug. 25-Sept. 1, 2013

We had our 2nd tropical storm (“Juliette”) in as many weeks, and although some parts of southern Baja took it in the nose, La Paz gratefully only got some strong winds, lots of clouds and some gentle rain and drizzle which muddied the roads and watered the plants.

Still, I always worry how the fishing will be affected anytime there’s a big change in the weather. Prior to the storm, dorado fishing had been spectacular. As good as can be!

Both our Tailhunter Las Arenas and our Tailhunter La Paz fleet had been deep into dorado ranging from 10-40 pounds with some days showing fast and easy limits with the voracious fish hammering the anglers.

As well, there were also good hookups (and all released) of sailfish, striped marlin and even on blue marlin estimated at over 300 pounds hooked on 30 pound test that (understandably) broke off after searing a few runs! Plus, for our Las Arenas fleet, wahoo showed up again for the early-morning folks who wanted to drag the big lures around after catching some of the giant squid.

So, once the storm passed, there was a bit of trepidation.

As it turned out, the dorado stayed hungry and came to chew! Fishing picked up right where it left off with fish showing up in a wide variety of areas and ranging from just a few yards offshore near the bean to several miles in the channel. One of the cool things about storms is that they often wash a bunch of stuff out into the water. I’m talking about brush, trees, trash…all kinds of stuff. After the waters settle the debris is out there floating either by itself or along current lines.

These become great fish attractors and working these current lines and floating debris can produce incredible results so, even if there are storms, there’s often a silver lining. Last year, we had a very wet fall season with rain almost every day for 5 weeks. We had more rain in 5 weeks than we had in the previous 10 years! Mostly it was just a few minutes and no more than an hour a day, but not only did it turn the hills green, but produced all kinds of “fish habitat” out there on the water.

This year, we’ve had 3 little tropical storms blow through already so we’re always keeping an eye out for that. Hopefully, no hurricanes! But fishing is good and September and October are traditionally our busiest and best months for fishing.

We love having the kids get into this. Taylor Murphey from Lakewood CA put up big smiles when she got into the wahoo this week near Cerralvo Island and poses with her catch! (Thanks for the photo, Roger!)

Take a look at the great colors! Our amigo, Vince Acosta from San Diego area put the wood to this roosterfish just off the sand near the Las Arenas lighthouse. He released the fish. Roosterfish tapered off this week, but some days were still banner!

Taking a break from the chill of rainy Oregon, John Gothi spreads the fin on a fresh bull dorado with Captain Pancho of our Tailhunter Las Arenas fleet. Great colors.

Captain Pancho seems to get into alot of photos lately! Diane Woerner was visiting us on her first trip to La Paz from San Diego and got her first roosterfish as well. A quick photo then back into the water for a clean release!

Local poster child, Roger Thompson always gets fish and knows how to make the photos look great. Roger was in the hot spot this week when the wahoo went “on the chew” near Cerralvo Island and lit them up! This is a beast of a ‘hoo!

Donna Thompson is the queen of the rockfish and never fails to put big pargo and cabrilla in the boat like this hefty barred pargo!

New Mexico in the house with Jonathan and Nina Duc Le and some nice mahi they caught near Cerralvo Island. It was Jonathan’s 3rd trip, but he’s always come with the guys. This time Nina would not be left home so she came along and did some great fishing! Glad she came along!

CRAZY WEEK OF SPORADIC FISHING WITH UNUSUAL COLDER WATERS AND WIND!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of June 9-16, 2013

It’s been an erratic week of fishing as late spring winds brought up more cold waters from the deep and dropped water temperatures and and turned waters green. Even in areas where the surface water seemed warm, below the surface, much of the water was cold.

The effect on the fishing was noticeable. Fishing days were up-and-down. One area could be good, but not far away another boat would get nothing. One day we’d catch fish and the next day, winds would blow and stir things up.

Our excellent rooster fish bite took a hit. We’ve had an incredible rooster fish season for the past 2 months, but things slowed markedly during this past week although there were some fun days when schools of the 10-20 pound fish were lots of fun on light tackle. The larger fish were generally absent with only a handful of fish in the 20-60 pound class unlike previous weeks.

The chilling conditions also stumped the dorado bite that is way overdue in starting. Normally, we’re seeing dorado back in April or so. The bite this year is tremendously late. Everytime it seems like were finally getting off the blocks and the dorado are ready to go, the waters get cold again and the dorado get lockjaw. We did get a few but only scrappy numbers with fish about 10-30 pounds. Far off the mark.

There were still some decent bites on pargo, cabrilla and amberjack and even a few marlin hooked but not enough for me to commit and say that the billfish are finally here in numbers.

The real highlight was the wahoo. Last year, we probably had 6 fish caught all year. We’ve far surpassed that months ago! This week about mid-week we got a nice jag of wahoo between 10 and 50 pounds off the north and south ends of Cerralvo Island. It was a nice surprise but no idea how long it will last.

NO MEXICAN FISHING LICENSES – URGENT

If you’re coming down to fish in Mexico, this is important to read:

We have just been informed by the Mexican government that they accidentally did not print out enough fishing licenses for the season. Tailhunters is one of only a handful of places that is allowed to sell the over-the-counter. But with no notice, the government now says they don’t have enough to give us to sell. This has affected all of S. Baja. Loreto, the East Cape and Cabo San Lucas have no licenses either. Some are just fishing anyway. We chose to follow the law. No fun to look over your shoulder!

Not to stress. You can purchase the online and it is important that you buy them before coming down. Here is the website: https://www2.ebajacalifornia.gob.mx/Pesca/

Click the American flag and it will be in English
You want to purchase the fishing license for the “FEDERAL ZONE.”
Do not be alarmed at the price…it’s in pesos!!! So just divide by 11 or 12 and that’s the rate in dollars and it will show up on your credit card statement in dollars.
If it’s slow or doesn’t work at first, try again later. With this announcement, everyone in southern Baja has to purchase their licenses this way!
Make sure you forward this to everyone in your party who is coming down or purchase the fishing licenses for them.
It is NOT a great website. Actually, it’s terrible, but it’s the ONLY way to get fishing licenses right now. If it doesn’t work at first, just keep trying.

No one has licenses right now and nothing until the Mexican government prints some out! We’re getting calls from operators in Cabo and the East Cape as well as walk-in clients all asking if we have extra licenses to send-over or sell. It’s crazy. Tough on all of us, especially because we’re one of the few outlets that has permits to physically sell the permits making it very convenient for the anglers.

You MUST have a license to fish. Even with this craziness, the inspectors are still out there checking!!! How nuts is that? We have alway made sure our clients have that LITTLE BLUE PIECE OF PAPER OR OFFICIAL DOCUMENT. If you don’t have it or your operators or agents are not physically giving it to you, you cannot fish! That’s the law. Many operators “charge you for it” but you never see the document. You MUST have it in your possession to fish.

We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience! We know it’s a pain in the backside. Everyone who is going to be on the boat must have a fishing license and they do inspect several times a week.

A number of the ladies had banner a banner week on the fishing like Marianne Sugawara from Cypress CA who fishes with Tailhunter several times a year. With Captain Joel she was out east of Espirito Santo Island when she got into a really sweet bite of big amberjack including this 45-50 pound slug. The ambers get over 100 pounds and are great eating big-cousins of yellowtail.

It’s getting a little late in the season, but where there’s still areas of the cooler water, we’re still finding a few stray yellowtail. North of La Paz around Espirito Santo Island has been a good spot for fish like this one that Tyler Ehlers got. Tyler’s from Grand Junction CO.

One of my favorite photos! Just sheer exhuberance from Stacey Wellborn who battled this big roosterfish right off the surf near the Las Arenas lighthouse. The rooster was released. Captain Jorge from the Tailhunter Fleet has a big smile as well.

With the waters warming, we’re finally seeing some billfish with striped marlin and sailfish moving into the area. Even moreso than just seeing them, some of them are actually ready to feed and we had several hookups this week including one one a big blue at the 88 spot near Cerralvo Island. Roger Thompson took this beautiful shot and beautiful striper near the island and attempts to revive the fish were not successful. Quite a few fish were hooked and then fought their way off lighter tackle during the week.

With so much great inshore action along the beaches, the light tackle and flyfishers are having a blast…especially on the roosterfish! Mike Schoeder from Alaska came to enjoy some sunshine and had a great week bending his flyrod and nice roosters like this one taken off the Las Arenas lighthouse. (Thanks for the photo, Mike!)

John Ehlers has made a number of trips to fish with us here at Tailhunters in La Paz, but called his past trip “his best.” John, from the Denver CO area, spent the better part of a week on roosters, pargo, cabrilla, yellowtail and amberjack including this big rooster near Las Arenas.

The appearance of doroda the last week has given rise to optimism that the waters are finally warming and we’ll be seeing some of the blue-water species moving in and indeed this past week we saw more dorado in the water. Jeff Sakuda from Montebello CA got great color on this bull dorado when he fished with Captain Jorge of the Tailhunter Fleet out front of La Ventana across from Cerralvo Island.

Allen Wellborn from Northern California called this hefty amberjack one of the toughest fish he has ever fought. Allen took the slugger near Espirito Santo Island near Isla Ballena. Sardines, mackerel and iron jigs are working well on the big ambers.

These needlefish are the scourge and pests of our panga fishermen as they steal baits and rip up lines. But, most are 2-3 feet long . Check out this beast! Keep your fingers around from it’s mouth or you’ll find out why they are called “needlefish!”

ROOSTERFISH CENTERSTAGE BUT WARMER WATERS HERALD MORE DORADO AND BILLFISH

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of May 26 to June 2, 2013

It’s been a good solid steady week of fishing with pretty much a lot of smiles and grins and stories of “biggest fish ever”….”my first dorado”…”finally a rooster fish”…”so much variety”…”he busted off after an hour!”

That’s a pretty good week!

Again, the rooster fish were star attractions as we seem to be in the best rooster fish action I’ve seen here in almost 20 years. It’s been almost a month of multiple-fish per boat. Light tackle…flyfishers…spin fishermen…lure fishermen…bass fishermen…everyone is having a hoot right up close to the beaches and rocks with fish going 10, 20, 40…even larger.

Almost all the fish are getting released too but they just keep coming back! That speaks well of the survival rate of these fish as well as their tenacity and voraciousness as well as kudos to the anglers for letting so many fish go…to fight again the next day!

These fish are not far. Literally in just a few feet of water and just yards off the surfline in many cases. Tales of larger fish come back every day as well. It’s one thing if a fisherman says he saw or hooked an 80 pound rooster, but it’s quite a different story when it’s one of our captains saying that an “80 pound rooster was lost!”

In these same areas, there’s good schools of feisty jack crevalle, african pompano, golden trevally and other members of the jack family and still the occasional sierra although waters may have finally passed the warming mark and the cooler water fish have moved on.

However, in deeper waters, the big excitement were the school dorado that finally moved in. Swarming schools of fun 10-15 pound youngsters provided some great furious action late in the week but some 20-25 pounders were mixed in plus we got a few in the 30-40 pound class as well.

Add to that some marlin hookups lost as well as a few sailfish taken and released and it looks like things might be turning the corner to warmer conditions although we still had a great week on some yellowtail and super-sized amberjack north of La Paz where waters were still cooler below the thermocline.

We are still getting pesky early morning winds in La Paz that are making it a bit rough to go out in the morning from the Bay. We thought we had finally hit summer, but as normally happens in May, we get one more blast of colder temps. Towards the end of the week, the winds kicked in again and made fishing the La Paz side much more difficult and certainly more bumpy so most of our anglers fished the Las Arenas side where winds and seas were calmer.

If you’re going to be visiting us in the next week or so, it’s not a bad idea to bring that windbreaker or light sweatshirt. It’s better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it. You can always take it off!

There’s still some big slug yellowtail north of La Paz where the waters are cooler. The fish are varying in size from 5 pounders to larger 20, 30 and 40 pound models like this great fish taken by our amigo, Grant Darby from Washington with a live mackerel and the photo assist from Captain Alfredo.

Even if live bait is available, one of the most effective methods of working the reefs and rocks with slow trolled crank baits like the one hanging out of the mouth of this nice cabrilla. Becky Solee from Tigard OR and her husband, Bob, are frequent visitors to us in La Paz and own B & B Custom Fishing Rods. Becky us using one of their popular custom-made “Chix Sticks” and she poses with Captain Rogelio.

Our amiga, Verda Boyd, usually visits us in December and she catches…sierra! She came to visit us in April and she caught…MORE sierra! She’s holding a nice pair here while standing on the beach at Bahia de Los Muertos!

Take a look at this monster African pompano! It’s the largest any of us have ever seen taken in all these years and it was caught by Faron Kilber from Canada on his first trip to check out the fishing with us in La Paz. This fish was so big, we actually ran to check the IGFA record books.

You can tell it’s a bit chilly by the way even Captain Afredo is dressed along with Carol Darby…and she’s from Washington and used to chillier temps! But when it’s windy it’s good to have a jacket! Carol stuck it to this fat yellowtail off Espirito Santo Island.

When it’s one of your first fish ever and your first time visiting La Paz and first time fishing on the ocean, it’s a good day to smile! Alex Babadzhanov is originally from Russia but living in Seattle a the moment for work and got into some nice yellowtail as well! He says he’s now hooked on Mexico and fishing.

Pete’s from Canada and the dorado usually start to move in this time of year but we don’t see numbers until the waters warm up. However we did get a big 40 pounder late in the week!

WIND DICTATES FISHING (and there was alot of wind this week!)

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of April 14-21, 2013

A scattered week of fishing dictated pretty much by what the wind does and this week it was pretty windy. When the winds aren’t blowing, we’ve got dorado, a smattering of tuna, yellowtail, jack crevalle, rooster fish, pargo and cabrilla all in the mix.

But, when then the winds blow, as they do this time of year when we transition between cooler and warmer weather plus we’re affected by all the cold weather in the U.S., all we can do is either move days of fishing or find spots where the winds aren’t blowing as much. Often that involves hugging the reefs and shorelines or ducking into coves to find fish. It’s not all bad, as there are still bunches of yellowtail, pargo, cabrilla, jacks, and sierra in the spots.

This week was probably a perfect example of this “transition time.”

There’s a whole bunch of variables at play. At the end of last week, the winds started to diminish and fishing reflected that with an upswing in yellowtail, sierra and other species. But, even as the winds died, the warming of the waters brought with it an algae bloom turning waters green mixed with the cooler waters brought up from the deep channels by the winds and there wasn’t a lot swimming around in the dark green. But, if you found the clearer waters that were blue, there were all kinds of things swimming and willing to bite a line! Finding the area was the key.

Then, mid-week the winds kicked up again and it was just as well to put your feet in the sand and watch the world go by from the beach. Not worth fishing. Too many waves. Too much rough water. No bait.

By the weekend, the winds came down again, but we had to wait a few days for the green water to clear and sure enough, the pargo, cabrilla, dorado, yellowtail and other species started biting. By the time you’re reading this, we’ll be into another “cycle” again. That’s the way it is this time of year. On the good side…there’s sure a lot of different species biting. I counted 15 different species last week! But with each passing week, the waters get a little warmer…the the winds drop down an little more…And fishing gets better!

Good amigo, Steve Hartsook, from N. California has been visiting us for years and came down earlier this year than normal finally getting into some nice yellowtail fishing with our Tailhunter La Paz fleet despite some pesky winds.

Retired Sherriff’s officer, Verda Boyd, usually comes with her husband, Tim, in December and the way the winds blew this week, it might’ve been about that cold! But Verda came without Tim for some yellowtail fishing and produced this hefty forkie fishing off Espirito Santo Island with Captain Joel.

Big red pargo lisos (mullet snapper) for Kwame Satterfield who was visiting us from Antioch, CA. The double catch was taken while Kwame was fishing with our Tailhunter La Paz fleet. He’s posing here at Bahia de Los Muertos. The big snapper/pargo are schooling in the shallows right now.

We just started getting some good roosterfishing the last week or two and most of them have been quality pez gallos. Jeff Brown from Minnesota caught and released this beauty off Espirito Santo Island. There have been some good schools showing up with some nice quality fish to start the season.

Happy smiles from Yolanda Wheeler. Her first time ever on the ocean…first time ever fishing on the ocean…and her first fish on the ocean…a nice dorado! She was so excited she was jumping up and down in the panga! One of our first dorado of the season also!

Far from home, but always welcome, Rod Brown visits us several times a year from distant Wrangell, Alaska! He always does well. Maybe two of the last yellowtail of the changing season, Rod’s posing with Captain Joel from our Tailhunter La Paz fleet.

Jackson, Mississippi in the house! Randall Carrier came a long way to visit us on his first trip and it paid off (just before the winds kicked up) with this nice wahoo on his first day and first day ever! The wahoo was stuck at the south end of Cerralvo Island.

PARTING SHOT! When fishing is already tough, don’t complicate it! Our resident amigo and fishing champ had a tough day…then found out later that “someone” had put bananas aboard! This was the only fish caught on the panga all day! For those who don’t know…bananas are bad luck!

STRONG WINDS BLOW APART THE BITE !

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of April 7-14, 2013

After such a spectacular week two weeks ago, Mother Nature kicked up again to remind us that there are some things we still can’t control and we really had a difficult week of fishing. The bugaboo winds that really determine all things down here howled and blew demonically and either damped the fishing or outright, kept our anglers off the water.

It’s too bad because we were really charging into (what I thought!) was high gear.The previous week we had our first big tunas…the best wahoo bite in severe seasons…big rooster fish show up…first dorado of the season…big pargo and cabrilla finally kick in…some solid yellowtail still biting…we were kicking up our heels and ready to charge!

And then this week came on. As they say…”in like a lion.” The winds roared.

Actually, our weather seemed to reflect what much of the west to middle of the U.S. and Canada got…cold temperatures, high winds… One day we just brought all the boats back to shore. Another day we just “suggested” it might not be so good to go out and told everyone to just stay back on the beach rather than get beat up (they had other extra days to make up the missed day). Two of the rare occasions when we maybe could have gone out, but why? Go out and get beat and wet? It’s supposed to be fun.

On a few other days, it was just too rough to even get bait or get to the fishing areas. So, this resulted in really slow fishing. So, that was pretty much the story of the week.

When we did get out, we did get a few yellowtail, some dorado. Some sierra. Some nice rooster fish were also caught. We did get two marlin hooked and dropped. As well, some pargo were taken. But, I need to be honest…it was a stinky week. We’ve had better.

The good thing about fishing the Baja…it doesn’t stay bad for long. We should turn the corner again…probably by the time you’re reading this.

Down from the S.F. bay area, brothers Glenn and Richard Chun fished a pretty much a whole week with us in that hot spot north of La Paz and found out how tough these yellowtail are losing quite a few fish, but having a blast taking 5-7 yellowtail each day.

Nothing better than a kid with a big smile holding big fish! Even the kids got into it this week for the thrill!

Even the La Ventana guys were in on the great bite especially since Cerralvo Island is right across the channel! Famous Capt. Fabio poses with some amigos and a nice rack of fish! (Thanks for the shot, Hawk!)

This surely is not a salmon! Rena Hunley lives along the Columbia River in Oregon and fished with us for the first time getting in on some of the big yellowtail like this one that she hefts on the beach at Bahia de Los Muertos.

Big big slug of a yellowtail! Just off Cerralvo Island, Scott Johnson from the Dalles in Oregon stuck this beautiful yellowtail on a live mackerel.

With Tailhunter International for the first time, Greg Hunley, fished two days with us taking solid numbers of yellowtail in the middle of the big bite taking place off Cerralvo Island.

FULL MOON PRODUCES MAYBE BEST YELLOWTAIL OF SEASON!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of March 24-31, 2013

What full moon? Yea…I was worried…but…

This has perhaps been the best yellowtail fishing of the year and maybe the best week that many of us can remember in a long time!

Both our La Paz and our Las Arenas fleet got into fish with some nice quality slugger fish running 20-40 pounds as waters cleared up in all spots, especially north of Espiritu Santo Island where the waters had been green and cold for awhile…plus windy…and now things have opened up nicely!

The pangas are getting 4-10 big fish each but…LOSING…just as many! Here’s the kind of comments I’m getting:

“Man, these fish are way stronger than salmon!”

“I can’t believe how hard these fish can pull. If you don’t turn their heads forget it. You can’t just hold the bent rod and wait for them to get tired! You’ll lose ’em every time!”

“I lost 4 on the iron until I figured out what I was doing wrong and finally started to listen to my captain who showed me that I can’t stop turning the handle. They hit like a freight train!”

For our Las Arenas pangas, the hot spot is still that NE side of Cerralvo Island by the backside. It’s solid with bait and fish and one of my captains counted more than 30 fishing boats out there one day including sporty’s, private boats, cruisers from the East Cape and commercial guys. The good thing was that it looked like everyone was bit! Mackerel and iron worked best!

For our La Paz anglers, the run to El Bajo…probably the most northern spot we’ll get to for daily fishing is the seamount north of Espirito Santo Island and the place almost exploded with fish. We had some guys cancel their 2nd days of fishing because they got too many fish the first day and were just whupped! But these fish are horses coming up off the edge in deeper cold water…grabbing baits and irons…then turbo jet back straight down! Most of these fish were short fat thick guys with big shoulders and bad attitudes!

The key right now is if this will continue. As I’m writing this, the advisories show that the winds will be kicking back up again this week. We’ll have to keep an eye out.

Also, totally ignored because of the yellowtail, but outside there’s some big dorado to be caught and inshore, cabrilla, pargo and sierra as well as roosters are running around!

P.S. As I am writing this on Sunday night a little story…we had 6 pangas out today. 4 pangas got into fish except two. BOTH PANGAS HAD BANANAS ABOARD!!! They lost yellowtail and big pargo!

NEW AIRLINES FOR LA PAZ…FINALLY!

After months of speculation and many promises, Aero Mexico has finally announced its new routes to La Paz flying directly from Los Angeles. As of April 6th, Alaska Airlines terminates it’s flights to La Paz, but Aero Mexico has stepped into the gap. However, flights don’t begin until June 20th from Los Angeles. But this is still good news. As of now, flights from LAX to La Paz will be on Sundays and Thursdays!

Dorado were again our bread-and-butter, especially for our clients fishing with our Tailhunter La Paz fleet. Even when the weather turned, the fish continued to bite. Captain Rogelio holds up a trophy bull dorado that Mark Gilliam of Thousand Oaks stuff of Espiritu Santo Island.

Wyoming first-timer, Amy Larson, had a banner day fishing out of Las Arenas with Tailhunter captain, Jorge. Now that we’re getting some sardines for bait, the fishing has improved with dorado getting most of the attention.

Shawn Parker got a bit of a mix fishing north of La Paz. Dorado from fishing topwater and nice barred pargo fishing closer to the rocks. Shawn is from the Reno NV area.

Brennan Lowery and Roger Hayak hadn’t fished with us in quite awhile, but had 3 pretty good days playing with the dorado schools last week. The show off a double-pair of mahi they caught their first day fishing with our Tailhunter Las Arenas Fleet. Both are from the Newbury Park / Westlake Village CA area.

Iowa in the house! Andy Gilliam did a good job repping the mid-west this past week. It was Andy’s first trip with us and he got a number of dorado similar to this one out of La Paz and Las Arenas.

Rick Kasper has place north or La Paz and visits often. In 31 years fishing the area, he had never caught a roosterfish until this past week when he caught and released this nice one off Cerralvo Island east of Las Arenas on a live bait.

Shawn Parker had a knack for nice pargo this week and he wasn’t even fishing for pargo! He was trolling deep water for wahoo with a Rapala when somehow this big pargo came up from the bottom and whacked the lure!

We had some brief thunderstorms this week, but some of them were pretty crazy! Mid-week we got a 45 minute dambuster that had downtown La Paz under several feet of water and turned streets into rivers!

Down on the malecon on the waterfront by our Tailhunter Restaurant, within minutes of the rainstorm starting, roads were blocked by torrents of water. By the very nature of these storms, several hundred yards away it was completely dry. Not a drop had fallen.

THUNDERSTORMS AND SUNSHINE MIX WITH DORADO AND OTHER SPECIES

La Paz/ Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Aug. 19-26, 2012

It was another crazy week of thundershowers on-and-off. It would rain one place, but not another. It would rain for 5 minutes or 60 minutes. One place would flood, but another place would be bone-dry! Downtown La Paz was under several feet of water early in the week as a flash downpour with thunder and lightning engulfed the commercial areas, but several blocks away, there wasn’t even any single rain-drop!

But, despite all that, we were able to continue fishing with no interruptions. Often, during this time of year, we’ll get these thunderstorms. You can often see them coming in columns of rain marching across the mountains or ocean. Pretty much all you do is either drive the boat around them or else you pull over and onto the beach …which is never far away…and wait it out for a few minutes then head back out .

Even tho’ the sun isn’t out sometimes, the fishing can still be good. The rains wash a lot of junk into the water and can really discolor the water especially with the run-off of mud from streets, ditches and arroyos. Seen from the air, it’s really a contrast between the dirty brown water and the true color of the ocean. However, the upside of that is all the debris that’s carried into the ocean as well. This includes brush, plants, trash, trees, parts of structures, branches…anything that floats.

This stuff accumulates on the surface and becomes a haven for baitfish. The baitfish, in turn, attract the larger predators, especially the dorado. So, one of the keys to fishing this time of year is to look for the current lines where the brush and debris will accumulate in long lines or just look for anything floating. Anything out there is worth investigating! Even a floating bit of styrofoam cup might be holding dorado under it. You never know! You could come up on a floating tree trunk and find dorado, tuna, wahoo and billfish all milling around it but never know it until you trolled by it or tossed some bait at it!

This past week there were some pretty decent days of fishing for both our Tailhunter La Paz and our Las Arenas fleets. The La Paz side had more fish and larger dorado but Las Arenas had some decent day as well with smaller dorado, but more variety with roosterfish, pargo, and a few billfish as well as scattered tuna. Most of the dorado were 5-15 pounds, but larger ones in the 20-30 pound class were around with some larger ones lost. Some striped marlin were also caught and released. Not many guys got roosterfish this week, but that might be because not many of our fishermen were chasing them, but the few that did go after them got some in the 15-30 pound category.

Still no wahoo to speak of and tuna remain elusive although we should be getting into them about now. September and October are usually the best part of the year for fishing !

Our Amigo, Paul Nagata, from San Francisco always comes down this time of year. He toughed out a rough week. Not only did he have to fish in rough weather but the airlines also lost his fishing reels (he got them back!) but he kept a smile and got good dorado fishing all week like this solid bull north of La Paz. Note the grey skies and rougher waters behind him. That’s Tropical Storm Hector that blew through and left us with a bit of rain.

Such a beautiful fish…a big bull dorado still “lit up” straight out’ve the water posed by our Captain Joel who had been fishing with Paul Nagata that day with our Tailhunter La Paz Fleet.

Thankfully, we did not get flooded like other Baja cities, but we did get some very gentle rain and wind which were a nice break from the heat for a few days. It didn’t make for the best fishing conditions, although we still got some nice dorado. But this was thet wet view of the malecon in front of our Tailhunter Restaurant in the afternoon.

TV actor and TV show host, Rick Kasper fishes with us just about every-other-week during the season and never fails to do well. Check out this trophy bull dorado he caught while the sun was still shining earlier in the week fishing with our Tailhunter Las Arenas fleet.

Old-time friends of Tailhunter, Jim Booth and Bill Sharp, wrestle with a fresh big bull dorado they just put in the boat near Cerralvo Island.

Professional chef, Vartan Bagdasaryan, put the wood to this nice roosterfish off Bahia de Los Muertos. He had a good week with roosters and dorado. This fish was released.

Daniel Compton from Arizona with Bill and grandfather, Dan Compton from Kansas wanted to get at least 1 dorado during the week. They ended up with 3 solid days of dorado fishing with both our Tailhunter La Paz and Las Arenas fleets. They are posed her at Bahia de Los Muertos near Las Arenas.

Big smiles for Greg Drezil just outside of Bahia de Los Muertos where the roosterfish continue to provide some great action on trophy fish. Greg released this one after the photo. Greg also got into some nice dorado fishing during the week as well.

I’m not sure what kind of setting he had on his camera when he took this photo, but it’s kinda cool! Burke Roble fished 4 days with us and did some damage to the dorado schools including this healthy slugger bull dorado! Check out Burke’s video clip below.

TROPICAL STORM HECTOR CLOUDS SKIES BUT DORADO STILL BITE

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Aug. 12-19, 2012

We have certainly had better weeks of weather down here. As a tropical storm pushed up the west side of the Baja Peninsula several hundred miles out it dropped some considerable rain on southern Baja. Cabo and Todos Santos and some of those areas were flooded. In La Paz, we got some nice gentle drizzles although some areas did get some sporadic short thundershowers that came and went. We were still spared the brunt of what hit areas to the south of us.

Still, it made for a lot of cloudy, windy and blustery days on the water. We were pretty much not able to fish Las Arenas at all from about Tuesday on. Too bad because the dorado and tuna bite had just kicked in. But with the storms, it was just too windy to get off the beach or even get to Cerralvo Island for bait. As the week went on, the road and arroyos became too slogged to get through also.

So, we had all our anglers fishing with our La Paz fleet. They didn’t do too badly. Most days there were limits or near limits of dorado. Most fish were about 10-20 pounds. Nice grade fighters ,but we also had some 30’s taken and several stories of “pilot error” on behalf of cursing fishermen who battled larger dorado only to lose the battles to fish that were easily over 40 pounds…and some larger to hear them tell!

As well, we still hooked some marlin and sailfish, but not many roosters once the storm front moved through. By the time you’re reading this, the sunshine has returned according to the predictions, along with some great sunshine and blue skies. However, as with any storm’s aftermath, I’m a bit worried about high winds that follow that are tougher and have a greater effect on fish and fishermen than the rain. As I’m writing this report, and looking out the window at the water…so far…so good! Just a little bit of a breeze! Fingers crossed for a good week of fishing. You have a good week too!

Tailhunter Captain Victor goofs with Gerry Acosta and Victor Gildelmontes who got into the nice bite of football tuna late in the week of Cerralvo Island. The guys got into the bite but ran out’ve beer and came back to shore. Then, they went back out and caught more fish! All the tuna were fun 8-12 pounders, but the first school-sized fish we’ve seen all season.

Mario Salazar and Luis Arandia started hooking tuna when this nice sailfish bit while fishing with our Tailhunter Las Arenas Fleet. Attempts to release the sail weren’t successful and the meat was donated. The guys also got some nice dorado while fishing several days with us.

Our long time amigo, Victor Ochoa with Captain Jorge. This is one of the great stories. Several years ago, Victor was fishing with us and Capt. Jorge was running the panga. As the day went on, they realized they were COUSINS! Victor’s mother had moved to California but was the cousin to Capt. Jorge’s mother! So, the two guys are related and always fish well together plus have a good time showing off one of their larger dorado of the trip.

Pam Sharp rocked her day with this trophy roosterfish that was released while she was fishing off the Ventana-Cerralvo area with Capt. Fabio. Great fish and super shot. (Thanks Hawk!)

We have sure had some good fishermen from New Mexico this season! Darren Hanson flew his own plane down and spent several days on the water with us. He took this huge bull north of La Paz near Espiritu Santo Island.

Our buddy, James “Hawk” Davis, took this incredible shot of Pam Sharp’s marlin doing the dance as it’s close to the panga. You can see her special “pink lure” on the line as the fish does it’s thing. Great shot and Pam also released the big fish.

Jim Lipkowski wanted one day to get a shot at getitng a roosterfish and successfully got this nice pez gallo of Las Arenas.

TUNA SHOW UP AT LAS ARENAS WHILE DORADO CONTINUE FULL MOON FEEDING!

La Paz/ Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of July 29 to Aug. 5, 2012

Despite the full moon, it wasn’t a bad week of fishing at all! The past few months, the full moon has actually been our better fishing. However, while the fishing seemed to slow just a tad, it was still pretty steady enough to fill some ice chests and keep anglers happy.

The dorado bite north of La Paz continued. Some days were better than others and some of our pangas did better than others but overall, if you fished a few days, you were going to get some nice limits of dorado that averaged about 15 pounds, but no unusual to have others in the 20-45 pound class as well. As far as I can remember this week, we had a lot of pangas out and I think pretty much everyone had shots at some of the bigger boys. Some of them caught them and some well…got away! That’s why they’re BIG! But there was some great action. The biggest factor seemed to be the wind. Some days were a little breezy and those days made finding the dorado a bit harder. The less wind…the better the dorado bite seemed to be.

The nicest surprise was the tuna boil that took place late in the week off Cerralvo Island. In spots between the island and the 88 spot to the east there were some nice boils of tuna going off. Nothing big, but for some pangas all the football sized 8-15 pounders they could handle! At the time of this writing, I don’t know if this is a fluke or the start of some nice tuna shots, but at least at the end of the week things sure looked promising. Some of the commercial guys who were out as far as 25-35 miles said there were some spots of larger fish in the 30-50 pound category.

But for our Las Arenas fleet, even if they didn’t fish for tuna, it remains the spot for roosterfish. Boy, did we have some nice roosterfish going this week. Several of the fish were in the 40-65 pound class plus a good number in the 20-30 pound class. It continues to be one of the best roosterfish seasons in a long time.

Also, quite few marlin and sailfish around still. We’re not specifically targeting them, but we hooked a number just while fishing for dorado or other species. Most were released.

It was another good week to get a trophy-sized dorado, especially if you fished with our La Paz fleet. Solid good dorado fishing pretty much all of this past week, like this bull taken by Brent Fischer and posing at Balandra Beach.

Roger Thompson seems to be king of the big fish. This is not only a gorgeous giant bull dorado, but also just a great photo. The fish was taken in the channel near Cerralvo Island.

This is like a poster! James “Hawk” Davis got this photo of about a 40-pound bull dorado under his panga and the filtered light caught it just right! (Thanks, Hawk!)

Our two college-professor friends, Llew Williams from Florida and Prof. Mark Marcus from Washington, tag-teamed this big boy off Las Arenas. The fish looks like it’s ready to bite Marks face!

Don Rea is the long-tme head football coach at Pacific High School near Ventura CA and a long-time amigo of Tailhunters. He’s a hardcore fisherman and always gets into the big guys like this hug bull dorado he took fishing with Captain Marcos north of La Paz.

Here’s a pair…and I don’t mean the roosterfish! Darrell George and Bo Herrera are two of our funniest fishermen and fly out from New Mexico several times a year. They post up two of their double-hook-up roosterfish just off the rocks at Punta Perico. They released a week’s worth of roosterfish includingthese two!

A beast of a roosterfish and the kind of fish that helps give Las Arenas the reputation of being the “roosterfish capital of the world!” John Rygiol gets a hand from Captain Pancho to take a photo of this big boy before they release it. That’s the south end of Cerralvo Island in the background.

That’s a lotta bull…dorado! Fish slam for four! From New Mexico…Darren Hanson, Darrell Hanson, Steve Hanson and Josh Van Dam!

Rob Caron and Capt. Rogelio show off another of Rob’s dorado. Rob spent over a week with us in the middle of the dorado schools limiting on the fish almost daily. Check out the flat ocean behind them. Rob’s from Boise, Idaho.

Darrell “Gomer” Oleson and his buddy, Brent, drove all the way from Utah for a few days of fishing in La Paz. This was Gomer’s first trip and they got a limit of dorado and this striped marlin. Marlin were again active all week with a number of fish hooked, lost or released.

A trophy trio for Brent, Dan and Matt Fischer who got 6 of these big dorado on a day fishing with our Tailhunter La Paz fleet near Espirito Santo Island.

Almost too big to lift! Steve Hanson from New Mexico put the gaff to this huge bull dorado he got on live bait north of La Paz just outside the bay fishing with Captain Marcos.

It’s not the biggest, but it’s his first! Erik Peterson finally got the dorado he was looking for while fishing between Espirito Santo Island and Cerralvo Island.

One of our long-time amigos, Tim Blagen, holds up his catch-of-the day…a big bull dorado that inhaled a bait and bent the rod. Tim had a few banner days with our La Paz fleet.

BIG DORADO AGAIN PUT ON A SHOW!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of July 22-29, 2012

Pretty simple this week…TAKE A LOOK at the PHOTOS!

Overall, a really good dorado week, especially for our anglers that fished with our Tailhunter La Paz fleet. Fishing north of the city around Espirito Santo Island then around the tips near Las Cruces and the channel in between Espirito Santo and Cerralvo Island, nice schools of the mahi were being found my locating floating sargasso weeds or bringing schools to the boats by slow-trolling live or dead bait; getting a hook up; then chumming the rest of the school to the panga resulting in multiple hookups.

The highlights for the past week were the continued catches of larger dorado. Fish in the 30 to 40 pound class were not uncommon and many lost as well as the “huge giant fish that bit and broke up.” (Or course to many anglers EVERY large fish is a “fifty pounder!”) But, even our captains verified that there were some big boys out there that simply left the clients out-gunned.

For the most part, we had one slow-day, but almost every day our clients each got limits or, if they didn’t get limits they were really busy with the larger fish.

Plus, the bite on marlin…stripers mostly…continued. Every day we had a few hookups on marlin with most fish being lost or released as the billfish were often found in the middle of the dorado schools often chasing the smaller baby dorado. (Which meant trolling a yellow and green feather was a good way to hook a marlin!).

As for other species, there were more roosterfish and a smattering of tuna and pargo at Las Arenas, but the area still has not produced a consistent bite even tho’ we’re finally finding some sardines. If you’ve been following our reports, for the last 3 months, there has been very little sardines around the Las Arenas area to use as bait. Despite little flurries of promise, it’s just not that good for fishing there. We keep our fingers crossed.
