La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report from Tailhunter International La Paz for Week of Oct. 7-14, 2012

It was a good week for dorado fishing and this nice bull with the great colors was put in the boat by Nash Johnson from Washington with Captain Adolfo. Dorado were hot for both of our Tailhunter fleets this week.

Our La Paz fleet and our Las Arenas fleet were into dorado all week, with excellent weather most of the time. Our amiga, Donna Drucker, who visits us every year was with husband, John, and Captain Joel when she took this nice bull north of the city.

He’s usually running road construction operations in Boise, ID, but Steve Walker got down to see us on his first La Paz trip and had a tussle with this feisty jack crevalle (“toro”).

Long time Tailhunter amigos, Byron Shovlain and George Bonner, spent 3 days fishing with our Tailhunter Las Arenas fleet and Capt. Archangel and filled the box with some nice dorado like these!

Alaska amigo, Rod Brown, extended 3 extra days and it paid off in extra days of fishing and this fat wahoo he got on a purple Yo-Zuri.

Two of the nicest folks…Stephanie and Kelly Mizuno…always spend time with us each year from Sacramento CA. They also got into some great dorado fishing with both of our fleets. “She outfished me 5 – to -1, ” said Kelly!

From S. Dakota, Deneen and Mark Clausen, were on their first trip and grand-slammed some great variety one day with dorado, roosterfish, cabrilla, pargo,  giant squid and bonito. Captain Jorge helps with the photo.

Steve Snead from Boise, ID, started slow but finished in full turbo mode with the dorado fishing after spending the whole week with us. Great shot of a bull dorado taken north of La Paz.

Seems like we get more and more great folks from the state of Idaho! Paul Wakagawa and Mark Echeverria (sorry  ’bout that, Mark!)  were a hoot on their first visit and show off a pair of their dorado on the beach at Bahia de los Muertos.

DORADO CRASH THE BITE AS FISH PILE UP IN THE BOXES!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Oct. 7-14, 2012

With almost perfect weather and a perfect moon, the week still started so-so, but gradually got better and better as the week went along with both our Las Arenas and our La Paz fleets pretty much firing on all cylinders and the dorado bending rods on both sides.

Not much to say!  The photos tell it all.  It was a pretty solid good week for fishing!

Our Tailhunter Las Arenas fleet really hit it’s stride with some of the most consistent fishing we’ve had all season there after the first few months of the season were really slow.  Sure, there were the occasional times when this panga or that panga had some off-fishing but for the most part, it was all-around great fishing for a variety of species all well that just got better as the week went on.

Sorry, no tuna, but the dorado sure came to play with consistent 10-25 pound fish and on a few days, there were easy and early limits with dorado pandemonium hitting the fleet with double and triple hook ups ripping the anglers.  But, on top of the dorado, by the end of the week we were also getting bent by giant squid, jack crevalle, roosterfish, some wahoo, a few marlin and sailfish, pargo, cabrilla, sierra and lots of bonito.  This made for a lot of tired arms and backs by the end of the day and mostly some big grins and smiles!

For our La Paz fleet, not as many dorado as Las Arenas, but what it lacked in quantity made up for in quality.  The La Paz dorado were generally larger with some fish in the 30 pound class hitting the fish boxes.

You can tell it’s getting cooler and the seasons are starting to change a bit.  Breezes are starting to blow and the shadows are longer. Waters are getting cooler as well.  A bit early this year.  It will be interesting to see what happens to the fishing in the next few weeks.  This week is supposed to be pretty windy with a good chance of rain showers here and there.  As I write this Sunday night, we’re watching Tropical Storm Paul that’s going to give us a little brush so we’ll have to see how that plays out. Our Amigo, Paul Nagata, from San Francisco always comes down this time of year. He toughed out a rough week. Not only did he have to fish in rough weather but the airlines also lost his fishing reels (he got them back!) but he kept a smile and got good dorado fishing all week like this solid bull north of La Paz. Note the grey skies and rougher waters behind him. That’s Tropical Storm Hector that blew through and left us with a bit of rain.

Such a beautiful fish…a big bull dorado still “lit up” straight out’ve the water posed by our Captain Joel who had been fishing with Paul Nagata that day with our Tailhunter La Paz Fleet.

Thankfully, we did not get flooded like other Baja cities, but we did get some very gentle rain and wind which were a nice break from the heat for a few days. It didn’t make for the best fishing conditions, although we still got some nice dorado. But this was thet wet view of the malecon in front of our Tailhunter Restaurant in the afternoon.

TV actor and TV show host, Rick Kasper fishes with us just about every-other-week during the season and never fails to do well. Check out this trophy bull dorado he caught while the sun was still shining earlier in the week fishing with our Tailhunter Las Arenas fleet.

Old-time friends of Tailhunter, Jim Booth and Bill Sharp, wrestle with a fresh big bull dorado they just put in the boat near Cerralvo Island.

Professional chef, Vartan Bagdasaryan, put the wood to this nice roosterfish off Bahia de Los Muertos. He had a good week with roosters and dorado. This fish was released.

Daniel Compton from Arizona with Bill and grandfather, Dan Compton from Kansas wanted to get at least 1 dorado during the week. They ended up with 3 solid days of dorado fishing with both our Tailhunter La Paz and Las Arenas fleets. They are posed her at Bahia de Los Muertos near Las Arenas.

Big smiles for Greg Drezil just outside of Bahia de Los Muertos where the roosterfish continue to provide some great action on trophy fish. Greg released this one after the photo. Greg also got into some nice dorado fishing during the week as well.

I’m not sure what kind of setting he had on his camera when he took this photo, but it’s kinda cool! Burke Roble fished 4 days with us and did some damage to the dorado schools including this healthy slugger bull dorado! Check out Burke’s video clip below.

TROPICAL STORM HECTOR CLOUDS SKIES BUT DORADO STILL BITE

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Aug. 12-19, 2012

We have certainly had better weeks of weather down here.  As a tropical storm pushed up the west side of the Baja Peninsula several hundred miles out it dropped some considerable rain on southern Baja.  Cabo and Todos Santos and some of those areas were flooded.  In La Paz, we got some nice gentle drizzles although some areas did get some sporadic short thundershowers that came and went.  We were still spared the brunt of what hit areas to the south of us.

Still, it made for a lot of cloudy, windy and blustery days on the water. We were pretty much not able to fish Las Arenas at all from about Tuesday on.  Too bad because the dorado and tuna bite had just kicked in.  But with the storms, it was just too windy to get off the beach or even get to Cerralvo Island for bait.  As the week went on, the road and arroyos became too slogged to get through also.

So, we had all our anglers fishing with our La Paz fleet.  They didn’t do too badly.  Most days there were limits or near limits of dorado.  Most fish were about 10-20 pounds.  Nice grade fighters ,but we also had some 30’s taken and several stories of “pilot error” on behalf of cursing fishermen who battled larger dorado only to lose the battles to fish that were easily over 40 pounds…and some larger to hear them tell!

As well, we still hooked some marlin and sailfish, but not many roosters once the storm front moved through.  By the time you’re reading this, the sunshine has returned according to the predictions, along with some great sunshine and blue skies.   However, as with any storm’s aftermath,  I’m a bit worried about high winds that follow that are tougher and have a greater effect on fish and fishermen than the rain.  As I’m writing this report, and looking out the window at the water…so far…so good!  Just a little bit of a breeze!  Fingers crossed for a good week of fishing.  You have a good week too!

This is the kind of bite we see in March and April…maybe not even THIS good! But with water temps dropping low, the yellowtail came roaring back near Espiritu Santo Island north of La Paz. 17-year-old, Emiily Duncan poses on the beach at Balandra with the catch taken by herself, her dad and friend Jorge. They were back on the beach by 10 a.m. this morning!

From Pocatello, Idaho, on his first trip to La Paz, Troy Lenhart takes a knee on the beach in front of La Concha Beach Resort with just a portion of his catch for the day. The fish were 20-50 pound slugs and they put 11 of them in the box, and lost several others. Their captain said, “We could have had 20 fish easy!” They were done by 10:45 in the morning.

Our first official wahoo of the season…FINALLY! Also turns out to be Dave Rose’s first wahoo as well. Dave DROVE all the way down from Colorado as he does several times a year. Dave initially had one wahoo come off, but came back and gave it another shot and put this nice one in the boat just south of Cerralvo Island on a dark Rapala CD 18.

It’s always nice to put a “check mark” next to an item on the bucket list. Ed Hoffman lives just north of us in Loreto and came down specifically to catch a trophy rooster and got this beauty just of the Las Arenas lighthouse first thing in the morning! Just what he ordered! The fish was released.

First timer from Idaho, Amy Lenhart, was on her first day fishing and just off the beach at Las Arenas put the wood to this super nice grouper! The fat guy was put in the boat by Captain Victor who poses with Amy. She also got her first roosterfish as well the same day.

Our amigo, Jorge Romero, does the gaff honors with Bob Duncan of Santa Barbara on a day that they put 11 of these nice fish in the panga west of Espiritu Santo Island. Daughter, Emily, fights another fish in the stern. This week, waters were again green and dirty but for some reason, the yellowtail came roarding back!

Our buddy, retired fireman, Craig Braswell, grunts to lift up two of their limits of yellowtail as he stand in the shallows of Balandra Beach.

Sacramento amigo, Dave Frausto, should be happy about the 10 yellowtail they landed! But here he hoists two of the nice yellows they put in the box one of the banner days this week that the yellowtail went crazy.

A look at the Terrafin sea temperature satelite maps (www.terrafin.com) show some encouraging signs. Much of the water near Las Arenas is inching up into the high 70’s and low 80’s. A vast improvement over the past several weeks when the waters were in the 60’s and showing blue/green on the satellite maps. Hopefully, the warmer waters will burn off all the cloudiness in the water and also bring back the sardines as well.

YELLOWTAIL in JUNE? CRAZY BITE MARKS WEEK OF FISHING!

La Paz/ Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of June 3-10, 2012

Who could have imagined.  It’s June. Last time I checked, it’s summertime on most people’s calendars.  In southern Baja and here in La Paz this is the time when we should be sticking dorado like crazy as well as marlin, sailfish, tuna, wahoo and other warm water species.  However, on the contrary, water temperatures in the Sea of Cortez and around the southern Baja fishing “hot” spots that are traditionally on fire this time of year have fallen off the charts!  In a bad way.  Instead of 80 degree water temperatures, anglers have been facing cold, green, dirty, cloudy waters down in the 60’s!  On top of it, getting bait has been like finding a needle in a haystack!

Needless to say, like many areas, the fishing around La Paz has been less than stellar.  In fact, it’s been really difficult. Using lures, larger baits like live and dead mullet, mackerel and other species, we’ve been able to scratch up roosterfish, some jacks, the occasional dorado and a few other species.  And that’s been it.  Lots of disappointment. But what are you gonna do?

You’re gonna keep fishing!

And then things kinda took a little upswing this week! Earlier in the week, for our Tailhunter Las Arenas Fleet, we got into some nice jags of wahoo at the south end of Cerralvo Island.  We also got some great quality roosterfish up to about 50 pounds plus got into some pretty decent pargo and cabrilla. We also hooked a few striped marlin as well.  Still not up to snuff, but surely way better than what we had been doing most of May and early June.

And, with waters still cold, green and cloudy…when we were giving up on warm water species…a surprise.  No warm water fish, but instead, we had a late week eruption of 20-50 pound yellowtail!  This is crazy!  Yellowtail season is March and April. We haven’t seen yellowtail in over a month.  But this week for our Tailhunter La Paz fleet, they not only got into yellowtail, they had some of the best snaps of yellowtail we have ever seen!

Boats were coming back by 10 or 11 a.m. with limits of 10 big slugger yellowtail.  They would tell me they lost 4, 5, 6…8 other fish to the rocks.  Captains would tell me they could easily have taken 20 or more yellowtail.  The fish were eating in about 40 feet of water and taking the larger cocineros and live mackerel we were catching in La Paz Bay.  Folks didn’t know what to do with so much fish.   When you have 10 fish that are 40 pounders…you suddenly find yourself with about 150 pounds of fillet!   Kind of a good problem…especially when many of our anglers were geared to really having to scratch for any fish at all and finding that by 10 a.m. they were too tired to pull on another fish!

As the week closed out, the yellowtail got a bit more elusive.  One day on and next day off.  But, I stopped trying to guess where and when.  We were just glad they showed up!

Don’t know if this will hold or it’s just a blip on the radar, but it surely saved a crazy week!

Matt Lewis came all the way from chilly Canada to find some sunshine and fish. He spent several days fishing with us and had some great action! Look like the pargo liso have moved back in a bit early! Matt got this nice fish just off Punta Perrico.

It was a great week for cabrilla (Mexican seabass) fishing! Our pangas this week averaged 6-12 fish between 2 and 8 pounds all week. Many of the smaller ones were releasd. It was also a bit chilly too...Matt is from Canada and still sported a jacket when temperatures dropping into the 40's. But Matt shows off a nice trophy cabrilla standing on the sand there at Muertos Bay.

This is a different species of "pargo" than the one in the top photo. This is the "dog tooth" pargo or "cubera snapper" or "pargo rojo". The one above is the "pargo liso" or "mullet snapper." I know...confusing as all get out. But make no mistake. These are tough tough fish in the inshore rocks that makes ANY pargo a real sporting fish and an event when you get one on the boat! We had a pretty decent week on working the reefs for some good pargo action.

Both Jill and I and all of the Tailhunter Tribe, Family and Staff wanted to thank you all for such a great year and for all the smiles and good times. We are blessed every single day for the privilege to do what we do and all of you make it happen. We're looking forward to and wishing all of you an even better 2012! BEST FISHES!!

COLD WEATHER BUT HOT FISHING ACTION MAKE FOR A PRETTY GOOD WEEK TO END THE YEAR!

La Paz/ Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of December 26-January 1, 2012

We had a pretty nice week of fishing here. We may have had one of the calmest weeks for wind in a few weeks, but it sure was cold. Temperatures at night dropped into the 40’s and we advised our anglers to make sure they brought jackets.  The best way to characterize the week was “action.”  Nothing spectacular in terms of size, but we had pangas out almost every single day and with all the catch-and-release fish added to the counts, our anglers were getting 20-30 fish per day!  That’s a lot of fun.  For a lot of our folks, many of them are from really cold places like New York and Canada and Minnesota right now so just being on the water was a treat. Add in some fishing fun and it made for some good days!

There weren’t any blue-water species to speak of, but what a great mix.  If you start with about a dozen feisty bonito ripping you up; add in about a dozen cabrilla; half-a dozen sierra, a few small yellowtail and a pargo or two…that’s a full day of fishing!  The most remarkable fish were the pargo liso which appear to have shown up early.  Several larger pargo took anglers into the rocks but we did get a few in the 10-20 pound class that are horses anyway!  Best spot was close…just around the corner from Bahia de Los Muertos at Punta Perrico.

It’s a bit of a trek from Montana and S. Dakota for Cliff Garber, Colton Nye, Chris Voller, Ryan Baumgart who were on their first trip to La Paz. Two days of good fishing produced nice catches of dorado for the guys…typical of the action this week!

Scott McKenzie from Seattle already made one trip to see us in the spring and has another trip booked next month in September, but last week brought his sisters, Jana M. and Lauren Moser down on their first trip to La Paz. Jana just took the California Bar Exam last week. Lauren is still in law school and all had an excellent trip. (See Steve’s accounts below!)

Our good buddy, Wally Lee, from San Francisco visits us yearly and shows off one of the dorado he caught during his 3 days fishing. However, he caught over a dozen species oveall including cabrilla, yellow snapper, pompano, and several species of pargo.

Yellowfin tuna were again elusive this week, but they threw a few teases at us at the south end of Cerralvo Island like this pair that Captain Victor found. (thanks for the shot, Hawk!)

You don’t get many of these in Montana! Chris Voller holds up a fresh mahi on the sand at Las Arenas. Both our La Paz and our Las Arenas fleets did well on dorado this past week.

There weren’t alot of trophy-sized dorado this week, but nice -grade fish such as this dorado shown with Jana Moser and Captain Victor were pretty typical and it wasn’t unusual to get limits or near limits daily of the hungry colorful fish!

La Paz/ Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Aug. 14-21, 2011

Well, the full moon didn’t play games on us this time and Hurricane Greg went wide left so all-in-all, a good week of fishing, especially if you came to load up on dorado fillets!  For both our Tailhunter Las Arenas Fleet and our Tailhunter La Paz fleets, dorado were 90% of the catch most days if that’s what you wanted to do.  The fish are fast, feisty, hungry and fun!  Pretty much all you want in a sportfish and since we had so many first timers with us this week, they were perfect gamefish during a pretty solid week.

 

Most of the fish weren’t big by any means, but 10-20 pound grade fish were the norm and more than enough for some anglers to handle, especially after a full-day of rod bending.  Theere were some larger 25-35 pound fish and some larger ones lost, but most were that medium-class mahi.  Some days, the schools were even smaller with lots of 5 pounders providing crazy action as it’s amazing what a voracious dorado will hit when it’s in full turbo but as one angler told me, “They were fun and we must have caught and released a dozen for every one we kept.  It was a blast!”  So, no shortage of action.

 

I think the surprising action was found by our anglers that decided to fish inshore.  During this time of year, most fisher-folk like fishing the blue water for the “glamour species” like the dorado, tuna, marlin, wahoo, etc. ”  The inshore stuff gets ignored but since almost no one is fishing inshore, it’s a great opportunity to find spots that haven’t been hit in a long time and likewise, find yourself the only boat working the area!  In the past week or two, I’ve had several of our anglers ask me to send them inshore and they’ve done great on some great eating fish like cabrilla, pargo, snapper, parrotfish, sheephead and ambjerjack as well as fun fish like pompano and their not-so-good-eating (but still great fighters) the jack crevalle and roosterfish!

 

Tuna and wahoo remained elusive at best.  This has to be the poorest wahoo season I can remember, but no telling what will happen the next few weeks which is traditionally our best time of the year for wahoo.  The tuna are the same way.  Every few days, they pop up and everyone gets excited…then they disappear.  We’ll keep an eye out for them for sure.  We should be coming up on prime time for our yellowfin.

 

There’s still alot of billfish in the water.  We hooked, lost, and released several this week.  Check out Scott McKenzie’s  great first-person account (photo above with his sisters)…

 

“… first day out of La Paz we had about 11 beautiful dorado up to 35lbs, plenty of double and triple hookups making for a frenzy of fun on the boat with (Captain) Boli!!

Second day, out of Las Arenas, we fished with (Captain) Victor the master. Right out of the gate a sailfish lost, with yard long dorado keeping us busy regularly, and a couple of marlin lost until late in the afternoon a bonito strip-bait fell prey to a marlin (about 60-70 lbs??), 4th time was the charm as we got a good hook set, and it was on our light tackle rod to boot!! 

A long fight ensued with everyone getting a chance at working this fish to the boat where it was admired and released! Second day- 7 nice dorado to 25-30 lbs, 1 marlin caught n released, 2 marlin lost, 1 sailfish lost….. doesn’t get any bettter than that!!
