La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report from Tailhunter International for Week of July 1-7, 2013

dorado becky and jimmy csutoras tags 7-13

She called it her “best fishing day ever!” Rebecca Csutoras is an avid hunter and angler and was on her 2nd trip with us and dad, Jimmy Csutoras, both from the Sacramento Area. She spent the week fishing with us, but on this particular day landed a box load of big bull dorado and also released two striped marlin. It’s been a much better week of fishing this week than last.

George Higi III wahoo dorado tags 7-13

Oh the joy! George Higi III, from the San Diego CA area, man’s-up with a double lift of a big bull dorado and his first-ever wahoo taken near Cerralvo Island. George “grand slammed” in that he got 3 trophy game fish…the wahoo…the dorado…and also a striped marlin. This was his first time fishing with Tailhunters.

rooster bill lewis tags 7-13

He came to get a roosterfish so he came to the “roosterfish capital of the world.” Bill Lewis from San Diego CA shows off a gorgeous pez gallo with Captain Pancho taken near Las Arenas. This fish was released.

Hosmer dorado tuna 7-13 tags

Rick Hosmer and Randy Calvert had a week full of giant dorado averaging 40-50 pounds like the ones here with a chunky yellowfin tuna tossed in for variety. Rick said, “there’s some spots of 100-pound tuna out there at the 88 bank.” He’s with Captain Mundo here on the beach at Bahia de Los Muertos.

Kris Jo Biddle dorado tags 7-13

They only had 1 day to fish having traveled from South Africa with just a brief stop in La Paz. So, Kris and Jo Biddle made the best of it with two trophy bull dorado which they brought to our Tailhunter Restaurant for a big cook-out. This was their first time fishing…ever!

Esteban wahoo 7-13 tags

It seem the wahoo are back! We had several nice hook-ups this week south of Cerralvo Island like this one held up by our amigo, Esteban Ramiro, who took this on a dark Rapala slow trolled off the bank.

Becky Marlin 7-13 tags

Doing it right! Not only was this her first marlin, but Becky Csutoras got it back in the water and released this fish as well with the help of Captain Joel. They got this striper north of La Paz. She also got some nice bull dorado (see photo above). Dad released his first marlin as well. See the photo below!

Jimmy csustoras tags marlin 7-13

Jimmy Csutoras from the Sacramento area was fishing with his daughter, Rebecca, and Captain Joel and both of them got striped marlin this day (see photo above). Jimmy and Rebecca both released their marlin, and during the week also released their 3rd marlin to swim and fight another day. This as Jimmy’s first marlin.

Sierra Exif JPEG

Family shot of the Whittlesey boys! Norm Whittlesey with grandsons, Daniel and David, all from Washington areas. They didn’t get alot of fish, but made up for it with all nice quality bull mahi.

rooster chuck banning 7-13

Chuck Banning, like so many others, wanted his first roosterfish and got it done with Captain Adolfo and this great-looking rooster he caught near the Las Arenas light house and released. Chuck is from the San Diego area.

HOsmer dorado broken rod 7-13

Not all battles end so well! Parting shot with Rick Hosmer who battled big dorado all week, but this one got him back by busting the tip off his new Shimano stick.

BIG FISH MORE VARIETY AS WEEK FISHING GETS BACK ON TRACK!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of July 1-7, 2013

The week started somewhat shaky and with a lot of trepidation given how erratic fishing was last week with wind, cold water, an offshore storm and a historic full moon.  But this, week ended up on a very optimistic note.

It seemed that with each day, conditions got better.  Water got bluer.  Waters got warmer.  More bait areas started to show up.  More sargasso weeds started to gather in the channels.  Waters calmed down and the chop and swell mellowed out.

And sure enough…the fish decided to play.  Not full chargers but we’ve had a very good week of fishing.

The dorado bite that has been so lacking hopefully turned a corner.  Again, not many small or medium fish.  Almost 90 percent of the fish were trophy 30-50 pound bulls.  I’m not exaggerating.  Several times we put all the fish on the beach on scales and NOTHING that came back was UNDER 40 pounds!  These were all huge world-class mahi with those big heads and attitudes when hooked.  I would say probably early in the week, most anglers weren’t used to the big boys and we lost 50% of the fish!

However as the week went on, we got better at it. Maybe 75% of the fish were making it to the boat.  Again, not a lot of fish, but when you put 2-4 huge bulls in the boat and maybe lose another 2 or 3…that’s a helluva day of exhausting fishing.

Add to that the appearance of more marlin and sailfish to spice things up as well as flurries of 20-50 pound tuna and then roosters along the beach and for most folks that meant some tired arms and full ice chests!  The marlin were almost all released and averaged about 100 pounds but we also hooked a few blues that were lost on light tackle.  Roosters were very repectable 40-50 pounders on the high side and we also hooked a few 30-50 pound wahoo as well.

Hopefully, thing will only improve!

That’s our story.  Hope you had a great 4th of July weekend!

P.S. At the time I’m writing this, we’re watching to see if Hurricane Erick will do anything. Probably nothing to us, but it might push up some big swells and chop from down south

roosterfish tags 1 5-13

From Chicago to the Roosterfish Capital…Captain Pancho gives Tim Sayre a hand posing with this colorful exotic roosterfish just off the beach near the Las Arenas lighthouse where the roosters again put on a show this past week.  This fish and all their roosters were released.

yellowtail tags jorge 5-13

Happy Hombre! Our amigo, Jorge Romero hoists a nice late season yellowtail he pulled up on a yo-yo yellow and brown iron near Cerralvo Island. He also lost a huge cabrilla shortly after on the iron as well. The presence of yellowtail tells us that there’s still cooler waters around!

SAYRE pompano tags 5-13

Bob Sayre looks like he’s not quite sure what he’s holding, but our amigo is holding a HUGE pompano that ended up on the dinner plate at our Tailhunter Restaurant. Bob’s standing on the beach at Bahia de Los Muertos and caught this on a live bait near Punta Perico.

pompano tags tom ames 5-13

A battle-scarred pompano that our buddy, Tom Ames from Idaho, took on a flyrod that wore out both man and fish! We’ve had a run of nice big pompano. Note the flat waters and how close it was caught to the beach!

rooster randy choate tags 5-13

Randy Choate was here last year with us and wanted to get into some nice roosters. Looks like he’s trying to suppress a smile over this nice roosterfish taken in flat waters out of Bahia de Los Muertos.  They caught a number of these and released all the roosters.

dorado Laurie Kennedy 5-13

I’m really surprised we’re not catching more dorado right now given that our air temperatures are in the 90’s and it’s almost June. But cooler waters have hung on so there’s only sporadic dorado fishing…so far! But Laurie Kennedy from Washington got one in Bahia de Los Muertos fishing close to the rocks in flat waters with Captain Adolfo.

rooster ken fritz tags 5-13

Ken Fritz from Sacramento called this “the best fishing day ever!” He got into the great roosterfish bite right off the lighthouse beach at Las Arenas and caught and released a number of these roosters!

PEZ GALLO ESTEBAN Rooster tags LAS ARENAS 002

First rooster ever for amigo, Esteban Romero, who is very familiar to many of our fishing clients! Captain Fernando helps with the honors. This fish was released and was caught on a live sardine.

Andrew McCormick pulled up this fat barred pargo near Espirito Santo Island working a live bait near the rocks. Great eating fish! Andrew is from the Portland OR area.

Andrew McCormick pulled up this fat barred pargo near Espirito Santo Island working a live bait near the rocks. Great eating fish! Andrew is from the Portland OR area.  Andrew was on his first trip with Tailhunter to La Paz.

Jesus sierra 5-13-tags

Hard to believe this late in the season that we’re still getting sierra, but the tasty toothy fish are still hanging off the beaches which means we still have cool water hanging out as well. Young Jesus was out fishing for the very first time and give’s a thumbs up to Captain Fernando and this nice sierra that ended up as a big plate of fresh ceviche!

Kenton McGuire roosterfish tags 5-13

Holding it high! Kenton McGuire from Santa Barbara was on his first trip to La Paz with his dad for a quick vacation before heading off to the Air Force Academy and pulled in this trophy roosterfish as well as several others. All were released.

ROOSTERFISH STILL CENTERSTAGE OF SOLID INSHORE ACTION

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of May 12-19, 2013

Another solid week of some of the best rooster fishing of the season.  The hot spot extends from the famous Punta Arenas lighthouse and that area of white beaches south through Bahia de los Muertos and down to Boca de Alamo to the south.  This is the area that has the reputation as the “Roosterfish Capital of the World” and extends to the East Cape area as well.

It’s surely living up to it as many folks who have never caught roosters are getting multiple hookups.  The roosters are right up close to the sandy beaches in several feet of water.

As some of our anglers put it, “We’ve been surrounded by roosters every day!”

These fish are running 10-50 pounds with some larger ones breaking off especially as anglers drop down their gear to have some fun on lighter tackle!

“Every cast was a bite, but these fish are tough on the light tackle!”

“I had no idea how much they fight.  I’m outgunned.  I brought a light spinning rod and got broke off on the first fish and got spooled on the 2nd fish before we could chase it with the panga!”

“What fun…hooked, released and lost over 25 fish and I’m whupped!  I couldn’t stop a few that simply broke off!”

In these same areas, there’s been a nice run of pompano up to 15-20 pounds plus schools of jack crevalle also marauding the bait schools along the beaches.

Our flyfishers have been having a blast casting to these fish as they boil along the beaches as well.

The rocks have been producing good action on pargo and cabrilla as well as the occasional yellowtail as the waters have not been warming as expected so we’re in a lingering transition with cooler and warmer waters all in the same areas.

That’s our story!

IMGA0081

It wasn’t the best of weeks for fishing Strong winter winds whipped the area for several days giving even the palm trees along the La Paz Malecon on the waterfront little respite.

Wayne Jarrett dorado tags 1

We know the fish are out there! Check out this big bull taken by Wayne Jarrett out at the 88 spot east of Cerralvo Island…just before the winds started. Big bulls like this aren’t very typical in the winter, but various reports from several areas confirm that the dorado are still hanging around! The problem is either getting to those spots or braving the waves and big winds to get the bait to fish for the quality fish like this!  (Thanks for the great shot, Hawk!)

ARt yellowtail tags

Horse yellowtail like this one caught by our amigo, Art “Doc” Flippin who comes all the way down from his job in the Arctic to fish with us, have been very close in the shallows just south of Bahia de Los Muertos. The promising bite was shut down by the winds and we plan to recon the spot again hopefully by mid-week when the winds should diminish.

whales dennis tags

It’s whale season as the grey whales have begun returning to Bahia Magdalena to the west of La Paz! It’s an incredible experience to get this close to the gentle animals and Tailhunters is running daily trips now through March to spend a day on the bay with the whales. Our “tour” now takes us to Puyallup, Washington at the Washington State Fairgrounds. Jill and I will be in our booth from Wednesday to Sunday. Come say hi and let’s chat about your 2013 La Paz fishing vacation!

WORST WEEK OF WIND KEEPS EVERYONE OFF THE WATER

La Paz/ Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of January 12-20, 2012

Not much of a week of fishing.  In fact, how about zero fishing.  I think that’s the first time I’ve reported that…EVER in 17 years down here in La Paz!

Cold weather and incredibly strong winds kept everyone off the water or close to shore.  Certainly, not much fishing going on, but thankfully, we didn’t have anyone reserved for this week.    It wasn’t just choppy, it was rough out there as it seemed the winds blew continuously as a windy front pushed through and chilled everyone!  If you walked around town, everyone seemed to be bundled up although many tourists found 67 degree weather to be rather pleasant.  For locals, there was a rush to put on jackets and long pants!

Commercial guys say there’s still some dorado outside at the 88 spot east of Cerralvo Island but no one really wants to go out there and get smacked around on a long run.  There’s also yellowtail stacking up at the north end of Cerralvo Island as well as around Bahia de Los Muertos. The week really started out promising, but then the winds came up and it wasn’t worth it to go out.   Everyone just wants the winds to stop!

Typically, we do indeed get winds during the winter, but rarely is it do we get continuous winds for several days.  Normally, we get it for a day or two intermittently.    We’ll keep an eye out on it.  According to the advisories, we’ll start to see some decrease in the velocity of the winds about mid-week.  Hopefully!

TAILHUNTER TOUR ROLLS INTO WASHINGTON

We had an outstanding show at the International Sportsmens Expo at the Denver Convention Center this past week.  But now, the “2013 Tailhunter Promo Tour” rolls on!  We drive back west a zillion miles and will be at the Washington State Fairgrounds in Puyallup, Washington (near Seattle) from Wednesday to Sunday!   For more details, click this link:  http://www.thesportshows.com/wss/   Hope to see you this week!  Come pick up our 24 page brochure and DVD and check out our new t-shirt styles.  Plus come talk to us about setting up your 2013 La Paz fishing vacation!

That’s our story!

tags tim zimmer 12-12 dorado

This looks like a poster! The colors are incredible on this bull dorado that Tim Zimmer caught with Captain Jorge out of Bahia de Los Muertos with us. It was another week of surprising big dorado up to 40 pounds…the kind we normally get during warmer weather! We also had quite a variety of other fish as well.

cristina ainsworth sierra 12-12 tags

Big fat sierra! We’ve had some of the biggest sierra I’ve seen in a long time these past few weeks. Just check out this big sierra that Christine Ainsworth caught fishing with our Tailhunter Las Arenas fleet. The fish are schooling in the shallows right now and can be great on light tackle!

verda tags pompano 12-12

Just to show off some of the variety these past few week, we’ve gotten pargo, cabrilla, rainbow runners, jack crevalle, roosterfish, sierra and great eating fish like Verda Boyd’s Africa pompano she’s got on the gaff here with Captain Jorge.

mike ainsworth tags rooster 12-12

Posed like a professional! That’s exactly what Mike Ainsworth does! He’s a fishing guide up in Washington and knew exactly how to hold this roosterfish he got on the flyrod just outside of Bahia de Los Muertos that can be seen just behind him in the background only yards from the beach. We’re still getting roosters in varying sizes like school-sized fish all the way up to 70 and 80 pounders!

There's a reason the local name for jack crevalle is "Toro" which means "Bull" in Spanish. These jack crevalle are among the gamest fighters in our waters. Tim shows off one jack he got while fishing 3 days with us.

SAILFISH – BIG DORADO – ROOSTERFISH SURPRISE WINTER ANGLERS!

La Paz – Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Dec. 11-16, 201

We had some late week rains which are very unusual for this time of year when winds are usually what we have to worry about, but we had a bit of both.  As the week went on, the winds got stronger then the winds died and then the wind died and we got some crazy rains!  Nothing really strong, but enough to fall fairly steadily and get everything wet on and off for about 2 days!

However, earlier in the week, we really had some excellent fishing.  Once again the dorado were truly a surprise.  Hard to believe it’s winter when 20-40 pound dorado are ripping up the anglers and putting some big smiles on faces.  But, that’s the kind of fishing we were getting.  Limits or near limits of dorado with the larger fish and bigger schools east of Cerralvo Island.  On top of it, even-to-some-degree when the weather was a bit sour, we had sailfish and smaller striped marlin in the count!

Closer to shore, smaller schoolie-sized dorado, but add in some solid sierra fishing plus pargo, cabrilla, a smattering of jack crevalle and pompano and bonito and it makes for some great unexpected action! Even bigger surprise, we got hammered by some really unexpected catches of roosterfish…and not just the smaller school-size fish either.  We got some 60-80 pound bruisers just off Punta Perico and the lighthouse as well as some of the roosters on the flyrod.

Hope your holidays are going well!

That’s our story!

That's ALOT of fish! Oregonian Don White had a knack for big cabrilla and other rockies this week including this hefty pair shown here with our Captain Alfredo. Don was fishing north of La Paz around Espirito Santo Island.

Bob Solee, come down several times a year to see us here in La Paz and seems to always get a personal best or something unusual. Yellowtail were on his "bucket list" and as luck would have it, he took one of the few yellowtail of the week fishing with our Tailhunter Las Arenas fleet. Bob is from the Portland Oregon area and is a custom fishing rod maker specializing in 3-pc. travel rods.

Yes, I do get out now and then and we had our 11th Annual Cabin Fever Classic here in La Paz and it was a blast. This dorado turns out to be the first of the season and quite a big boy for so early in the year! But it was swimming through a school of bonito when we spotted it and threw a live bait and it! A great catch. I'm standing on the beach at Bahia de Los Muertos.

Easy to see why this is called a dog-tooth snapper. We call 'em pargo. John "JD" Drucker from Arizona is one of our La Paz regulars and comes several times a year. He had other fish that they never moved out've the rocks!

First timer from Oregon, Sheila Maloney, had a big smile for this cubera snapper and a bunch of others she picked up working the east side of Espiritu Santo Island using a combination of sardines and live mackerel.

It was another good week for roosterfish as the fish seem to be coming on stronger. Dave Swanson and Captain Joel pose with a nice pez gallo before setting it free. We would have more rooster photos, but most fish fortunately are let go so we don't get many photos! Dave got this near Espirito Santo Island.

Matt Gesler has to be one of the funniest and happiest guys we can remember. Always laughing. For a first-timer he slammed fish for 3 days including these nice cabrilla.

Rod Brown really wanted to catch a yellowtail and finally got one on the last day of the last hour of fishing. Rod hails from Alaska and makes 2 trips a year to visit us.

She's the pargo queen! Carol Darby put 7 of these barred pargo in the panga compared to just one for her husband who said "She was on fire!" These are tough fish and this is quite an accomplishment. She stands here on the beach at Muertos Bay.

We had a blast this week with our 12th Annual Cabin Fever Classic. It was a bit smaller than usual, but no less fun as we had 3 days of fishing...one day of snorkeling at the island...and lots of great dinners and good times. Thanks everyone! It was a blast! (Where's Mike?)

INSHORE SPECIES DRAW MOST ATTENTION WITH BIG CABRILLA AND PARGO ROCKING ANGLERS

La Paz / Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of April 22-29, 2012

An interesting week of fishing down here in La Paz.  I think our yellowtail bite is officially over although we’re getting a few punky firecracker yellows that aren’t any bigger than 5-10 pounds. And…every now and then, especially north of La Paz, a nice little jag of the bigger fish jumps up and goes on a chew.  But, for all intents and purposes, things are changing and it’s best not to lament what’s NOT biting and concentrate on what IS biting!

Basically, it’s turning into your typical spring smorgasborg of fish species.  Frankly, it’s a lot of fun because from day-to-day, you’re never sure what’s going to hit. Sometimes it changes within the hour.  I believe this past week alone we got over a dozen keepable species of fish!

This included our first dorado of the season, a nice 25 pound class mahi picked up on live bait right in the middle of swarming bonito schools.  This also included some really nice action on roosterfish that are hitting in numerous spots around the La Paz fishing area.  As well, cabrilla, grouper, sierra, amberjack, jack crevalle and all three members of the pargo family (barred pargo / pargo liso/ dog tooth-snapper) were all taken this week usualy in the areas around underwater structure.

I gotta tell you…take a look at some of the photos from this week.  Don’t blow off fishing for cabrilla or pargo.  Some of these fish are HUGE! Try stopping some of these bad boys before they get to the rocks.  I was on the water a number of times this past week and I would guess that about 2 nice pargo or cabrilla were caught for ever 10 hook ups.  Imagine a fish that can swallow a whole mackerel or a whole small needlefish that we’re using for bait.  That is a BIG fish with a BIG mouth!  One day, I personally lost at least 8 and only putting 3 aboard…and then again ONLY after amping up my gear from 40 pound test to 60…then to 80 pound test and basically my trolling sticks!

It sounds silly, but if you can’t turn their big heads of these guys, you might as well just throw bait in the water and watch them blow up on the surface and tear it up and forget fishing.  You’re just feeding the fish!  But, it’s incredibly exciting when you’re slow trolling a bait through blue clear waters and you can see the bottom just a few feet below.  You start chumming baits and out of nowhere, 20, 30 and 40 pound fish start going ballistic behind the boat…and then your line screams!

The biggest factor this week was the darned wind!  I tell you…one day we had barely wind and had a great day.  Next day, the winds ripped us apart and we could not even get bait.  The best we could do all day was troll Rapalas all day for less-than-happy results.  When we went after yellowtail north of La Paz, it took us two hours in heavy winds and seas trying to catch a dozen mackerel for bait.  After getting enough bait, we hit the yellowtail spot and it was like fishing in a washing machine. The current was so strong we couldn’t even get the mackerel down deep enough to the fish because the pangas were getting blown off the spots.

Hopefully, usually the winds keep diminishing but it’s not over until it’s over.   I’m really excited about seeing so much sargasso weed floating around out there!  Given that we got that first nice dorado, if we get a little more water temperature, schools of dorado can’t be far behind.  Some commercial guys are seeing them as well as marlin sitting on the surface just sunning and not quite ready to go on the chew.  Give it just a tad more temperature and the big boys should come flying!

That’s our story!

Verda Boyd with her favorite, Captain Jorge, has a knack for putting fish in the panga. The retired sheriff's officer from the S.F. bay area holds up one of her pargo she hooked off Punta Perico near Las Arenas. Pargo became a main focus over the last week or so as yellowtail tapered off.

Take a look at what might be one of the last yellowtail of the season. Our amigo, Jack Perris, from Garden Grove CA fished with us a few days and put a variety of fish in the boat including this yellowtail.

Craig Norton from Oregon poses with his wife, Debby, and a fat pargo mulato (barred pargo). Craig was on his first trip with us and was fishing with our Las Arenas fleet. The big fish hit just outside of Bahia de Los Muertos.

For a first time visitor, Desiree Weisser, from Orange Co. CA had a banner day on the water showing off a nice catch of sierra and bonito. Some of that went for ceviche that night at the Tailhunter Restaurant. She's posing on the sand at Bahia de Los Muertos.

We were wondering when the roosters would begin to show up and I think it was really that we were just concentrating so much on the yellowtail. Each week it's gotten a little better, but this past week, the roosters were schooling up. NOthing huge, but most fish were fun 5-20 pounders!

YELLOWTAIL SAY ADIOS BUT PARGO AND ROOSTERFISH TAKE HEADLINE STATUS

La Paz/ Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of April 15-22, 2012

It would appear that the incredible yellowtail bite of 2012 has left us.  With the exception of a few fish here and there, not many yellowtail to speak of the last two weeks and even the commercial pangeros are off to fish other species.

In it’s place, the focus has been on other species that are normally caught at this time, but haven’t gotten much attention at al the last 3 months.

This past week, the pargo have really been on a tear, or at least, we’re seeing so many more in the counts mainly because everyone is fishing for them so there’s a direct correlation!  The big red guys are in their springtime spawn and schooling up in the shallows so the action has been visually and physically exciting with big moving schools of voracious 10-40 pound fish up close to the rocks and foaming when boat is thrown in their directions.  But that’s also the bain of these fish as well…rocks!  There’s plenty of action on the pargo but “action” doesn’t necessarily mean “catching.”  Probably only 1 of every 6 or 7 fish hooked makes it to the panga.  Many of our anglers who are fishing these pargo for the first time come back with comments like:

“Craziest strongest fish I’ve ever seen in Baja.”

“I hooked at least 5 of these fish and I couldn’t even lift the rod.  They immediately rocked me before I could turn the handle.  So much power!”

“I didn’t have a chance.  Two days fishing, I got 3 of the smaller pargo, but lost so many huge fish!  Frustrating but fun!”

“I was blown away by how powerful these fish are.  If you don’t turn their heads, they take you right into the reef!”

And so it goes!  We have clients down these days who look forward to nothing else but the challenges of these pargo year-after-year.

In addition to the pargo, we’re getting our first real action on the roosterfish as well.  Again, it might be a function of the fact that with the yellowtail moving on, the roosterfish are getting more attention.  However, reports of 2, 3, 5, 10 roosterfish caught and released have not been uncommon this week with our largest being about 40 pounds as the school-sized fish appear to have moved in to feed.

In addition to the pargo and roosters, some of the other classes of fish that helped keep the action rolling include snapper, sierra, cabrilla (seabass), bonito, ladyfish and some fat jack crevalle.

One of the more exciting things that happened this week was a report from one of our amigos who lives in La Ventana and fishes all the time.  When he’s not fishing, he’s kite boarding…his new love.

Check out what he wrote to me…

“Tuesday, I was kiting 1/2 a mile off shore between Punta Gorda and La Ventana when I came upon 100 or more birds crashing the water. There was sargaso everywhere and yes…..Dorado! I was literally kiting among Dorado slashing thru the water crushing bait. I saw at least 6 or 7 fish going ballistic at once with birds diving at jumping bait everywhere. And no fishing rod………. I was so caught up in the moment and amazed with all the action, I crashed my kite and ripped it in half. I talked with several kiters later in the day that had similar experiences with the exception of the kite crashing. Anyway, it was another day on the water to remember.”

We’ll keep you posted.  That’s our story…

The week started slowly, but finished with a nice roar with yellowtail pretty much hitting any bait or jig that hit the water. Our buddy, Jim "Hawk" Davis was in the thick of it and hung this beauty yellowtail off Cerralvo Island.

Ron Clark and his amigo, Mike Phillips, started the day with 10 mackerel and came back with 5 fat yellowtail out by Boca de Alamo south of Bahia de Los Muertos. Largest fish were just under 40 pounders.

The yellowtail bite since January has been so incredible that I think some of our regular season fish like pargo and cabrilla are feeling a big ignored since all the focus has been on the big 'tails. However, no doubt...the fish are there. Capt. Fabio holds up a hugs trophy cabrilla. Cerralvo Island in the background.

Famous Russian pianist Alexander Tutunov http://www.tutunov.com/ is a professor of music at S.Oregon St. University in Ashland, Oregon and took time off from teaching and a busy concert schedule to sneak down to fish with us. He shows off some of his catch taken early in the week.

It'a turning into one of the best yellowtail seasons ever. They fish showed up in January, months ahead of schedule and have been biting pretty much ever since as far down as the East Cape. Mackerel have worked exceptionally well but blue and white and also blue and chrome jigs have been deadly like the one hanging out've this big guy's maw! (Thanks JD!)

This yellowtail bite runs as far north of La Paz as Espiritu Santo Island and at times between the sport pangas and the commercial pangas, there can be several dozen boats on the spot but it hasn't usually mattered as the fish keep biting.

Jack Steele who lives in Ventana got out to work the northern end of Cerralvo Island which seems to be the magnet for these yellowtail and poses with the results!

Jill signs autographs on one of our Tailhunter T-shirts for Denny and Cheri Gallegos at the International Sportsmans Expo in Salt Lake City this past week. We had a great show and time. But this week, we're back after 8 years for our 11th show of the season and will be at the Fred Hall Fishing & Outdoor Show at the Del Mar Fairgrounds in San Diego. Thursday to Sunday! Come out to see us!

UP ONE DAY DOWN THE OTHER BUT YELLOWTAIL CONTINUE RIPPING RODS BIG TIME!

La Paz/ Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of March 12-19, 2012

It’s been a fairly steady week of yellowtail fishing in our area.  Not as good as last week when we had perhaps one of the best yellowtail bites in recent memory, but our pangas fishing out’ve Bahia de Los Muertos still found good grades of fish.  Maybe the fish were just resting up and re-charging from  last week when during the full moon, they bit like mad dogs and there were several days last week when pangas were averaging 4-10 yellowtail per day in the 25-35 pound class.

This week, a little slower. Sort of…

On the slower days…  Mostly 1-2 yellowtail per boat with some pangas getting up to 5 on the better days. A few boats did better than others.  Skill and luck has a lot to do with it when tangling with these big fish.  On the slower days, some of it was the wind.  Some of it had nothing to do with the wind.  Maybe it was because there were too many boats on the honey hole hot spot. Or maybe the fish were just tired and had lock jaw.  I dunno.

But, on the better days this week, the guys said that once they found the spot or found what the fish wanted…whether live bait or jigged lures, the bite was one and every drop was a biter and, if not a yellowtail, then it was a pesky skipjack or bonito.   Our largest of the week was a hefty 45 pounder on the scale. The fish were in several of the usual places.  Boca de Alamo just south of Bahia de los Muertos was again the hot spot, but the south end of Cerralvo Island, the north end of Cerralvo Island and La Reina all produced fish. There seemed to be so many areas.    Better bait fishing using mackerel were the predominant methods, but lacking that the old –standard blue and white jigs on a rapid retrieve were good as well.

One note…normally, we’re fishing pargo, snapper and sierra.  But, they’re rarely appearing in our reports.  I think those other species are starting to feel ignored.  It’s not that they’re not there. It’s just that everyone has been concentrating on the big slug yellowtail!  We did have one pair of our anglers decide they had enough with the yellowtail…”No mas!” and asked Captain Victor to fish for something else.  They got a boat load of sierra and cabrilla as well as some pargo!

A footnote to this wacky season that’s been so good is that we did have a little flurry of yellowfin tuna in the 30-40 pound class come breezing through at the south end of Cerralvo.  We’re trying to follow up on that but we also had two marlin hooked and lost this week as well.  This is March!

TAILHUNTER TOUR HEADS TO SAN DIEGO

We had an incredible time at the International Sportsmen’s Expo in Salt Lake City this past week.  Show number 10 in the books!  Great to see so many of our amigos!  Thanks to everyone who visited and booked their 2012 La Paz fishing trip!  But now…after 8 years…we’re returning to San Diego for our 11th and final show of the 2012 promo tour season.  Starting this Thursday through Sunday, come see us at the Fred Hall Fishing and Outdoor Show at the Del Mar Fairgrounds in San Diego!   We are really looking forward to it and seeing all our San Diego amigos!

Maybe the best yellowtail week I can remember this past week! Simply spectacular! Of the 4 days when the wind didn't blow, the ocean exploded with big yellowtail up to 45 pounds. Notice the blue and white iron hanging from the lip of this slugger! (thanks for the photo, Roger!)

Our amigo, Jorge Romero, poses with some "Boca de Alamo Salmon" aka yellowtail! The fish were found most of the week in various place but Boca de Alamo just south of Bahia de Los Muertos was on fire. Some days 4-10 fish per boat up to 40 pounds was the AVERAGE with just as many fish lost!

Captain Pancho helps out Lynette Yetter first timer amigos from Colorado. Lynette got several of these including one on light tackle that went 45 pounds and sent Lynette for massages the next day at the hotel losing a day of fishing...so husband Allan had to go alone (see his photo below!)

Lots of happy folks on the beach at Bahia de Los Muertos this week posing with their catches. Interestingly, even with the full moon, the 4 days the wind laid down, folks got as many as 10 fish per panga. The 3 days the wind blew mid-week, it was 1-2 fish per panga.

Colorado fisherman, Al Yetter, came with his wife for 3 days to fish with us and put some nice fish in the boat. Al loves to fish. His wife was so sore after day 2 of fishing when Al put her on a 45 pound fish with light tackle that she missed day 3 having to go get a message. So, Al had to fill-in! He shows off once of his fat yellowtail he got on a mackerel.

Yes, there were other species this week! Amberjack are the big boy cousins to the yellowtail and get over 100 pounds. Check out this copper guy that may have gone 6-70 pounds. Several nice amberjack were taken this week in a range of areas. Great eating fish!

Also getting in on the act is our good friend, Esteban a Romero. He doesn't like fishing...he likes "catching." He did well and I'm sure he went right back to La Paz and threw a party with yellowtail ceviche and yellowtail on the grill.

Working the north side of Cerralvo Island with blue and white iron (bait was tougher to get) it was full turbo slam fishing for Joe Arata from San Francisco. Huge yellowtail all day long!

Guys often ask me, "How many fish will I catch?" "How many 40 pound class fish can you catch?" is what I often answer. Slugger big yellowtail off La Ventana too!

When it's as calm as this in Muertos Bay, the winds are down and the fish go turbo. Or you can just park it on the beach and throw your cell phone as far as you can. It's like living in a postcard! (Thanks, Hawk)

It was just a tad "crowded" at the Long Beach Convention Center for the Fred Hall Fishing and Outdoor show this past week in Long Beach! We had a grand time and now are moving to our Tailhunter Road Show to our 10th venue in Salt Lake City at the Expo Center in Sandy for the International Sportsmans Expo running Thursday to Sunday. Come say hi and book your 2012 La Paz trip!

YELLOWTAIL PUT ON BEST SHOW OF SEASON DESPITE FULL MOON!

La Paz/ Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of March 4-12, 2012

The week started out with a roar with some of the best yellowtail fishing we’ve seen…perhaps in years!  Our fleet fishing out’ve Las Arenas/Muertos Bay found big yellowtail up to 45 pounds just south of the bay around Boca de Alamo.  Boats averaged 3-10 of the big yellows each and also sometimes losing as many as they caught in relatively shallow water not too far off the beach.

Of note…even with the full moon blazing, the WIND can’t be denied as a factor.  Most days the pangas took 4, 6, 9, 10 fish per boat, ,but ON THE THREE DAYS THE WIND BLEW at mid-week, the boats averaged only 1-2 yellowtail each.

Fish were also found at Punta Perico, south Cerralvo and Northern Cerralvo Island as well.  The fish were prone to jumping on live bait with mackerel as the prime baits, but sardines working as well and, in those areas or if the anglers ran out’ve bait, yo-yo-ing blue and white, scrambled egg or green and yellow irons worked well for some of the larger fish.  As mentioned, as the week went on and the winds came up, the bite slowed.  Perhaps it was a combination of the full moon and winds but I’m going to put it all on the wind! . . ., but the boat averages dropped to about 1-2 per day, but then some larger amberjack started to show that were in the 30-70 pound class.  To round out the bite, big jack crevalle, pargo and bonito added to the action. Also…stay tuned…we have showings of dorado and sailfish starting to move in!!!  Whoa…will keep ya posted!

Here’s some of the comments from the week. Let the amigos tell it better than I can!

“Still hammering the yellows at the north end of the island on bait and jigs, blue/white & blue/chrome……Boca de Alamo was even better than Monday because they they found bait……”

“Flat out beautiful day today……..Still getting plenty of slugs  (yellowtail)”

“We went to the north side today and boated 10 …bad boys! …We caught all these fish on iron. Blue and white was the ticket to a good ass whippin. We lost as many fish as we caught. I need some more jigs!”

“Couple hard fighting Bonita, nice Yellow-tail, couple misses. …We were down to 2 mackrels, one was a 7″ one 4″. On the coin toss I got the big one, Carlos got the other (rigged coin toss). Five min. later, I have my hands full with annother nice yellow-tail. Perfect end to a great day!”

“ I also heard that chico dorado are starting to show around the shark buoys out near the 88”

6 yellows, lost 4 or 5 and 1 amber(jack)….. bait was not a problem today but not as many yellows…….Yesterday the commercial guys brought in 25 to 35 yellows, after fishing all day

TAILHUNTER ROAD TOUR HEADS TO SALT LAKE CITY ISE SHOW

We just pulled out’ve the Long Beach Convention Center where we just tore down the booth…or should I say “cleared the debris” …after the Fred Hall Fishing & Outdoor show.  Just a massive and fun show.  Imagine cleaning up after a huge kegger party that lasted a week or knocking things down after Woodstock!  That’s what the show was like.  So many great friends and clients stopping by to see us from all the years.  Lots of smiles and high-fives plus folks booking for 2012.

Thanks to all of you who came by and all of you who also stopped by the comment about the blogs, articles and columns I’ve written over these 16 years…Yes, Jill is encouraging me to get that book going!

Also, special thanks to everyone who brought us food…pizza, chicken, Chinese ribs, toritllas and beans, cookies, brownies, pastries, sandwiches, chocolate, smoked fish, smoked venison, tamales, chips, candy, soda, beer, tequila, energy drinks…Jill and I did not starve!!!

So, as I type this, we’re on the road north now towards Salt Lake City which is always a fantastic show in the Expo Center at Sandy UT just south of the city.  It goes from Thursday to Sunday and we’ll be in our usual booth.  Here’s a link to all the details and discounted tickets:

The quiet before the holidays? There just weren't that many fishermen out or much of anyone out the week before Christmas. Just as well...it was darned cold and windy earlier in the week.

CRAZY COLD WEATHER FRONT HITS WITH WINDS EARLY IN THE WEEK!

La Paz/ Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of December 19-26, 2011

Not much fishing earlier in the week when both winds and low temperatures contributed to less than ideal fishing conditions.  Night time temperatures dropped unbelievably into the frosty 40’s and daytime temperatures barely above 60 some days. Add blustery wind and it was better for us to tell just some of our fishing clients who had extra days to just hang out in town and wait until things got better.   For most, it turned out to be a better move.  As the week went on, it settled a bit although remained chilly.

One thing folks forget is that when it’s really windy, it’s not just tough fishing, but also can be very difficult to get live bait which compound efforts.  So, later in the week when things calmed down a bit we were able to get some sardines and using both sardines and slow trolling smaller crank baits and shiny spoons, we got into some nice sierra up to about 5 pounds inshore both off Bahia de Los Muertos as well as in La Paz Bay.   As well, some decent cabrilla helped top off the fish boxes plus a few stray dorado were caught up to about 10 pounds.

There were report by some of the commercial guys of hooking some tuna near Cerralvo Island, but when we went out to confirm, nothing showed up as rough off-color waters were left over from the winds. We also got reports of some big squid that were caught as well.  We’ll keep an eye out!

 That’s our story!

Late in the season is a good time to chase the bigger bull dorado we see here in La Paz. What we might lack in quantity with fewer small fish is made up for with larger trophies like these two that Rich Ogden from Morro Bay CA got fishing with Captain Chito north of La Paz.

I don't know how much longer the tuna will be around as waters cool, but both the north and south ends of Cerralvo Island are still producing fish between 25 and 80 pounds although it's getting a big bumpy and windy out there! Our good friends, John and Dolores Ehlers came out from Colorado to spend a week with us and got into some nice fish like those they pose with here at Muertos Bay.

From Utah, Justin and Jarron Cozad had some nice days on the water with us including a good day chasing the dorado around Espiritu Santo Island. Here's two of their catch. That's La Paz in the background.

After several trips to La Paz, Coral Ogden from Durango, CO put her biggest dorado in the boat and had "her best day fishing" with a solid day of big dorado. She was fishing live bait on the west side of Espirito Santo Island.

Captain Archangel with our Tailhunter Las Arenas fleet bends to get out of the way of the photo with Justin Cozad holding up another nice yellowfin tuna. Check the flat waters! They were fishing the ridge south of Cerralvo Island chunking drifted dead sardines.

It's been an unusually productive last few weeks on striped marlin and especially sailfish which we usually see in the spring and early summer. For whatever reason, we seem to be hooking quite a few sails which are a nice bonus for many anglers who have never hooked a billfish. Most of them are getting released or breaking off on light tackle. John Ehlers battled this estimated 150 pound sail for 3 hours...his first! This is a BIG sail. They were not able to release it and the meat was donated.

IT’S GETTING COOLER AND WINDIER AS CROWDS THIN BUT FISH STILL BITE!

La Paz/ Las Arenas Fishing Report for Week of Oct. 31 to Nov. 6, 2011

It wasn’t a bad week of fishing.  It was a really good week for fishing down here.  It’s just that there weren’t alot of fishermen.  So, overall, the counts might not look that good, but it’s deceiving because there’s just not that many folks fishing this past week!  Almost like clockwork, November hits and I think folks are already gearing up for the holidays.  There’s a bit of a lull in anglers coming to town.  However, those that showed up were treated to finding themselves often the only folks on the hot spots and cooperative fish willing to bite!

For our Las Arenas fleet, the tuna are still there.  Both north and south Cerralvo gave up some nice fish with some fish in the 50-60 pound class found at the north end of the island, but a long way to run from Bahia de Los Muertos where our pangas are beached these days.  However, if you were looking for quality, that’s where you had to go.  The south end of the island that has been a hot spot for the last several weeks still kicked out the 25-40 pounders…a real nice grade of yellowfin and usually about the size that most can handle without busting a back, gut, or fishing rod!

Again, we’re using fresh dead sardines for bait and drifting over the spots.  The biggest problem has been a sealion or two that continues to pester and bogart many of the fish that are hooked up.  Nothing like watching the big dog take a big tuna right off your line that you’ve been fighting for an hour and leave you with only a head as it swims away and then teases you by tossing the carcass back and forth in front of you!  Grrrrrr….

Legally, we can’ t do anything, but some anglers have found that when they see the sealion approach they put their reel into free-spool and at least give their tuna a fighting chance to dive down and escape.  It seems to work about 1/2 the time.

As well for our Las Arenas anglers, they’re still finding those big roosters, a nice smattering of late-season sailfish and marlin plus an increasing number of sierra, pargo and cabrilla.

For our La Paz anglers, those fishing north from the city near Espiritu Santo Island are still finding a good quality dorado with some really exceptional bulls being taken up to about 30-40 pounds.  Live sardines, caballito and strips of dead bonito are working best.  Don’t be surprised either by big sailfish and marlin still moving in the warm waters.  Inside the bay where waters are cooling, more and more sierra are being caught.

That’s our story!
